This week's challenge, find a new use for a button. I'm just always afraid I'll screw myself up. So what's called not Tampopo. Oh my gosh, I'm sorry. So Bonnie and the family and the thing is she brings her Buzz Lightyear with her, and I forget exactly how it comes about, but there's there, you know, you know you go to uh of course you know, you go to Burger King especially probably for your age. So if you've ever heard a reggae song, well all reggae songs, almost all reggae songs go on way too long, but then there's the ones that go on and on and on and on, and they've got lots of echo in it. But I I like the thing where they where they show you, okay, here's the results we have, here's what percent is in.

I don't. First I get a little tickle that goes, well, that's one of the things about off-year elections, which is in addition to responding to previous elections, you're also very incentivized to to vote. Let's not even get started on Chuck Schumer. And apart from his beef with another rapper, I think that's all and he's Canadian and used to be on TV. There's a part of my brain that feels like the conversation gets dumb when we leave out that wider denominator problem. And whilst I'm very happy that Prop 50 passed, I hate Prop 50. And I I just think it's amazing to use nothing but other people. When I talk about how much I like Adam Curtis, and I don't mean to seem preemptively touchy, title.

Are you positive of this? Like you probably have an idea in your head about what skinheads are. What's up? What what are you what are you telling me and our listeners? Who are Crazy Ivory and the douche? Like up to the top of air, like cutting actually. I classify Eve. Remember Saint-Giv or whatever, the guy with the underpants says, just because you're a bad guy doesn't mean you have to be bad guy. No, I've got so um my stream deck is three rows of five buttons and I have one. And we're drop ins and dropouts and they're they sound like a they were done by somebody who maybe was a little stoned. They put up the thing go, oh my gosh, check this out. Like the ball that Babe Ruth hit is very different from the ball that Hank Aaron hit.

Well, two two of my favorite episodes of Hip Parade are about two epochal events that may not be interesting on the face of it, because it's not about the music, it's about the business. Drake had all of his songs go in the top ten. So you say like, well, yeah, but you know, Drake had these top da da da da and yeah he sure did. Yeah. Fucking sees it and it Oh, talk about a denominator problem. Or like how does he find so much good footage of people ballroom dancing in every movie? Where like there's no explanation for all at all of this shot. I think I don't know if I'd recommend it as a first Adam Curtis because it shares that problem with trauma zone of like being told So there's the first part which which is like oh I'm watching a Pon Croc show they're like, Oh it's a skinhead show.

Oh, yeah. It's not that loud. of old podcast clips and uh uh automating my uh wait so wait okay And you use something like uh not loop back, what's the what the fuck's that called? It would have this interface with a bunch of buttons on it. You call somebody and try to make them think it was Arnold Schwarzenegger using just the soundboard? Like, oh that was a good one, Jewish Craig. Like I had a friend who worked on ATC and Talk of the Nation and she's and until they went to digital in the m m early to mid-2000s, she was still cutting tape. Oh yes. It's the most amazing thing in the world. And it was three fucking teens. And I got a bunch of Snickers bars and then plus like we got a regular old premium variety bag of o' little nubbins, you know, little Snickers.

It's like you you're watching the computer and you're learning like what what a what a plan is. There's there's there's private mind mo private mind motions, but there's also just the things you always think. Expiration dates. And it's about ramen and it's really, really good. uh martial arts. on a podcast. Bonnie, uh their family goes they go to this chicken place. That's a good name. And you get the good premiums. There's like an encounter session like AA group in the basement for all these toys that have been left behind and forgotten from old promotions. Uh he's a he's just a grappling hook and they all just want to be played with. And honestly now like having a Stream Deck, I use my Stream Deck so wrong.

Oh, excuse me. No, I I'll send it to you. No. Dub music. No. Something between Robert Fripp and Ingve Malmstein. Might magazine by Dave Eggers also a very good magazine. Proposition 50 in California. I never quite uh I always wondered if that was a weasel word that didn't mean anything. Okay, so anyway, they say, okay, look this and such person. And then what's what I think is actually super helpful in terms of trend lines, and listen, trend lines are not the same thing as the data. So you see, Mary won fifty eight percent of the vote tonight, which is pretty interesting. Well, you know, the Democrat did this performance last time. Here's the percentage of people who buy this kind of thing and smaller and smaller and smaller.

You have to you have to think about the size of your slice in terms of how big the pie is. Because I'm really glad for what happened last night. and voted for this and there wasn't even a person on the ballot. You you look for the five years ago. Well, half of the people, well, how many people are we talking about? to glom on to a good night for democrats while doing absolutely fuck all to actually change anything. But a cynical person might say, well then what's the pattern there? asterisks and that that drives people crazy. It's more like watching basketball now instead of just men standing in a field. Where there's only so much time before you pitch. But then I'm a National League guy, so I don't even understand the designated hitter rule.

I don't actually think that's a good idea. One of them is the introduction of SoundScan in nineteen ninety, and the other one is what he calls the war against the single. Like in the case of Dark Side of the Moon, Dark Side of the Moon was in the top 100 albums for I think 20 years. I don't run into Beyonce songs just walking around. Uh so many people hated the Beatles. And I like Beyoncé. But I'm really glad it passed, but I I'm not sure that you should look at even these four wonderful victories as being that meaningful was that it was gonna be I mean I I was ready I all I wanted was good news last night. I'm sick of that, all that experience being for stuff that inevitably turns out bad. He's I mean, what he can say is, wow, he ran a good campaign and, you know, that's a good night for Democrats.

Oh that's good. It's a it's a iPlayer, BBC iPlayer uh show that I stole from somewhere else, uh called Shifty. When I say find, like how does that make its way into his world? I'm talking about how you find a purely visual image that has no tags affiliated with it for how you would connect an Elvis impersonator with a coal mining strike. Okay, w remember we're we're in a we're in a sidebar and sidebar right now, so go ahead. As much as there is incredible audio in it, it also is you've really got to be ready to read everything on screen. Wow. And I think that in some ways, I'm probably being a little bit cute and liberal arts about this, I think in some ways that extends to his work. And it's it just you feel your blood boiling because you're like, oh, I've heard about stuff like this.

There's one did you get to the one is it in this one? Because all she sees is a lobby full of bad possibilities. skinhead girls with the skinhead girl haircut just kinda wants to kiss on her boyfriend in front of the camera. Where it would, you know how you get the little fill-in tab of is this the next word that you want? Well, you know, actually I I mean I I've been able to make a poll. So I'll I've got I I've previously pulled a couple pieces together here. I just begin the day every day with a friendly voice, companion and obtrusive. And so what I do is I'm able to go in and I say, click it. And it's been fucking great. Yeah. Um there's a couple models of that that you want to differentiate.

Time of day changes are very fucking cool. For 30 30 bumps. And I reset it and it doesn't work. But what if they're not a group? Yeah. uh through smart home stuff. Yeah, and I used to do that m well, I do, in theory, do that manually to just get appending things to a Google Sheet, but you can do a lot w with this integrations. Yeah, well and I also there was three in the box and I made another one that makes my phone honk and it's right by the door. One drop of super glue and and a little magnet and and uh and and you're done. return or enter. Uh the I th I thought you had a refrigerator at your at your office. who used to work at WFSU, he is now working at a different thing and he's gotten older, and there's a wonderful feature that the woman who cut my hair oh wait, no, she didn't write this one.

What? Maybe, maybe. Um funny thing, a little bit ago Alex said, Oh no, we gotta record later. And there was one that got a lot of, and so soundboard basically you go to a page and I think probably using Flash probably must have been flash. of course, or anything. But the first soundboard I remember and soundboard was a term I remember catching on in the probably early two thousands, I want to say. Actually we had six hundred, but we didn't know it. you know, and her show and she passes on air and stuff like that. And they keep wanting to like, you know, you gotta watch the girls wrestle in the jello pool. Um, my friend Ben, who worked at the local um public radio station, let you know, sometimes let me come in and hang out and visit.

Or you watch like a Trevor Horden thing and you learn about the amazing early samplers. Well, is it the pre or the post? But or you're jacked in wrong. And sort of like changing anything with my audio setup. Ha ha small branded things from the MM Mars company that were in individually wrapped containers. Okay. Like a twelve-year-old Dutch girl. I thought, you know, there's me. Like it w so the texture of the rum, I wonder if it got wrongly chewy from moisture over time? Khanosue's love is that all the different cutlets, Soba or Ramen. It's it's um no I know this. Uh-huh. And you know, she came up with all the names for the restaurants in the good place. Seatbeltiest seatbelt you've ever seen.

You could do a YouTube essay on this. Now you wanna talk about layers. says to Buzz Lightyear, who who thinks he's an astronaut, he says, you're a toy. Oh god, I'm almost there. Uh yes and fucking god We talked about this in the after show You are immune to narrative I uh uh Mm then now you're gonna tell me about what you use your stream deck for, which I think is similar to mean just turning the light on and off. Um you blew it. Well m it wa it would just fade uh in and sounds in and out, like instead of just like Jewish Greg, Jewish Greg could be slowed down. Uh I mean the it would be a bit for the So you would play like you would play like a um uh you would play like a uh Blink 182 song, but slow and with echo.

Or something. S so the soundboard you were working on was mostly just a lark. For especially for things like magazines. Ali Velshi, who I like. The literal denominator is roughly the same for all of those, which is the voting population in a national election. Do you know what I'm saying? forgetting the context that we're really talking about here. Talk about losing the forest for the trees. If the Washington generals win by default, well good for them, they get paid either way. This is really interesting and also it freaks me out because I don't know what the other pie necessarily even is. 49. That's right. Uh no. I can s I b believe so, but uh again, one of those things. Oh my god, there's some of them are so fucking well because they're ambitious.

that. And then slap some denominator under it that's implied or whatever. I mean the most straight up one would be um number the denomin if the denominator is number of people who are eligible to vote in this election. kind of like, okay, the the guy I want to win is winning. dislike of Trump, but a general dislike of Trump has existed for almost eleven years. But and I don't I just feel like that's it's not not only is it not something they talk about on the news or whatever, I just it bugs me as when we don't see the context for that And so there are always asterisk act-ish things like this is the year, this is when the ball changed in this one way. You've got you've got stuff like the asterisk like uh steroids here.

s one of the most best and most interesting sports with which to follow the statistics. clock thing does happen, but also stuff like I think they're getting they're cracking down more on how much time it takes to do a given thing. My gosh, why are you giving this guy so much time, so many warm-up pitches, you know, and you can challenge that and but anyway. to get a home run because getting too many points this inning means that by the end he's going to be exhausted. it because there are a couple people around me who can explain what the fuck is is happening and the context of well but also the context of like okay Yeah, this is uh a double is great in this context. Wow, that's crazy. goes into the top ten.

That was a really, really, really big deal. So the denominator on that is fucking millions of people who don't even know who the Beatles are. than having even the top all of the top ten singles on streaming. Uh that in that instance, there's like five reasons for that. If I said something as ridiculous as, you know, two two-thirds, over oh, you know, over over 60% of the people in America uh don't I wanted to see because of the future I'd like for my kid. And I want to make sure I'd like to see future the future moving in that direction. Mm-hmm. And uh emphasizing how impressive and I agree how impressive. And I I showed my kid a photo. Trying to make something because he cause like I said, he mainly, I think, primary obviously everything he uses mostly is other people's stuff, but primarily a lot of it comes from the archives of the BBC, you know, TV radio, you name it, right?

How do you find like how do you when I say how do you find, not as in how do you do a keyword search on ballroom dancing, but if you've but s like there's there's one that's about it's an entire arc about an Elvis impersonator who wants to fire his agent. And ties it into the coal miner strike and like it's holy fucking shit. Someone who's a source that's like, yeah, I worked at this newspaper at the time of whatever you you know, w whatever you want. Like, oh yeah, I have B roll of this stuff. to know how to find the people who got the sources. So it's not just y you know, BBC uh footage. Yeah yeah yes. Well, there's there's several points to draw out of his work. Mm-hmm. They didn't give a second thought to that.

She's obsessed with it. Curtis and the point of that was Yeah and so and so but you can see like it's more of a denominator. And the guy on stage is plaintively begging, we've got to fight we've got to fight the other people, you know, like part of like the you know National Defense League and all those horrible groups. National Front. where she can't stop watching and wondering what's happening in the lobby. There's so many I I don't know why. You can poll in iMessage. Um The one thing that I've been doing all week that was not a failure. It's been week. basically charge themselves from the one of those completely stopped working and it drove my kid crazy. uh d sp l dimmer or after ten p. Yeah, I I did not touch that because that has worked great for like a a decade.

is I just start from scratch and I say out loud something like, hey Dingus, set all lights to, I don't know, goldenrod. And you don't have that in HomeKit. And then I have to go in and manually change each one of those little pieces of shit. But I with the exception of those Wiimo switches, or sorry, not switches, plu smart plugs that are uh uh n now just don't work. um s a smarty strip, you know, where you can um assign a pl plug uh or um each outlet has uh not outlet what do you up you know like Anything you could do with HomeKit, you can do with it. Detergent. Yeah, yeah, and I just never uh d did anything with them because I it was like, okay, uh a g a gift that I did not want, uh, but I would feel bad throwing it away.

work, but the company is like alive and well. home uh home assistant but you can also you know plug it into home kit all of that pretty much everything that the Wiimo app let you do um and it s uh starts my Spotify Spotify uh Spotify morning playlist and logs uh the time and l the location doesn't matter. do anything until this time. Something to work flawlessly for six days to use like three different APIs. po uh pockets, keys, phone, wallet before you leave the apartment. Okay, there are no other lights in the house except the uh uh bathroom, which is the place where you need to go and do the thing. He was in a band called Cold Water Army that I liked a lot. Denominators. What does half mean?

No, no. You misplaced it, you hallucinated that you found it, and then you asked a question about it. Find something new to do with a button. Hmm. Yes, I used a loop back loop back and lurp back and and with that you get an array of buttons. So your your idea was, and that's exciting. And it became very popular with people. Be so hony And and you look over and there's this guy just sitting there at a soundboard with no expression on his face. Uh Ben, everybody. With buttons on it. And uh and so they could do like and it was exciting for me 'cause I was I mm, I wouldn't say I'm a I like the idea of public radio now, but I was completely subsumed in public radio for twenty years. Trick-or-treat, and then you say buttons.

The idea of having a poll where you learn what public opinion on something is. Okay, thank you. Is this is this is this the test? This is an important You're doing terrific. I guess um what's her head? the fast food place with all of the other old promotional toys. You know that song, right, from uh on Avery Island? Right? really limited and way more fun than my idea of soundboards and my experience of soundboards. in real real time, you know, like do a sort of uh not it it wouldn't be ducking, but the the way that it's like a slight And I can almost promise you that everybody listening right now does not have as much potential context for trying to understand what the fuck you mean. The people who look at a photo that I post on the internet, they'll be like, Oh, that's a photo similar to the understanding how the music bed part works and all that and the slowing down and the dub mix.

on the cover. And it was really w beautiful. That became, you know, one of the things that made I don't know if it was bad on on newspapers initially. Um, but if you're charging thirty forty I I bet it so what do you got? You've got the process of the editor working on it, then you know, art people, layout, that kind of stuff, production. But yeah, I don't know. That's what a percent is. you know, how people did better over time. The state of Michigan voted this way in 2024, this way 2020, 2008. We there was nothing else on the ballot in California, at least statewide, right? How well this passed. as winning thirty percent of thirteen million. don't necessarily know what this means. The I don't know I mean mm I don't know if they go and would have people either.

The uh That's why I was watching. Then that numerator starts to seem a lot, a lot, a lot, a lot smaller. In this instance. uh upset and frustrated when I am when I see or or rather when I do not see that context on the MSNBC or or wherever I'm just Because the here's another denominator thing is that weird 40% number with him. automatically ha the the team you you just get players on base and the first time I heard yeah that's weird but that's that's not gonna happen every game whereas the pitch In the case of the charts, wow, where do you even begin? The way that Billboard Hot 100 works I'm going somewhere with this, I swear to God. And it's not to diminish, you know, Gangham style or Harlem Shuffle or any of those other kinds of things, but we're talking about very different denominators at this point.

You know? In the absence of a deeper context. about what that means about this and last night that's kinda felt like that kinda felt like how they were trying to sell it. Like, so you you're so excited about this numerator. Um uh the I think you were posting about Adam Curtis and uh one of his best films, Hyper Normalization. Well, I was thinking in particular about this show, Shifty, which is his new series on it's a little tough to find unless you well, I mean actually it's on YouTube. Mainly TV. His producers must be so good. He also knows enough about the context and has smart enough people around him who were there at more nuanced moments that aren't as important as we think they are and can go and find the But like the B how does he find crazy B-roll?

Right. thing people do with not with logical. if you don't like know what you want No I just I've just never heard of journalism. going and visiting this guy and it's about this charity for spastics and he keeps saying spastic over and over. And it's like it's so there is a scene that is it kind of drove my wife out of the room. uh experience d dealing with that whole process. fifteen, twenty minutes of over her shoulder seeing these cops say, well, hadn't you been in an institution? Uh I don't know, it's just another this is really boring, but it's just to me a good symphony of how technology plus a little self-awareness can improve your life. Oh, no, I thought That's old. And um every day I can hit this button and it'll create a new file for my day and ensure that it is unique.

in terms of findability. Every time I went back to it or tried to reuse the action, it would just make a new file. Oh, well that's great. Kind of like hex numbers, but you can basically you can say like set lights to 100%, you know, set all lights to this color. It's so uh cause trying to change all of those devices, hoping they're connected, hoping they're connected right, and I've got arrays of things whether like five light bulbs or like, you know, re recessed or track lights, where it's like there'll just be one that just never works. uh of different kinds and different systems and different blah blah blahs that have accreted over time. How would you do that? Right? You're gonna have to go in and test each one of those and make sure it's right.

No. And it is it has three little buttons in it. uh over shower dysphoria stuff so that I can see the trend line because we love trend lines here now. is is going, so w why not? uh if if t-ta, which I've uh always used like in the background, but not for really powerful stuff, just like sending stuff via um R RSS feeds or for uh what Wiimo was doing and I don't need to manually open obsidian to append a Dropbox. And maybe I'll get my soundboard to work. Um oh I I apologize. Don't can you not make a noise for a minute? um uh uh his old garage band the select boys before he worked at WFSU there's Ben Wilcox hi Ben Wilcox if you're alive I think he's alive I I am. Uh less than two minutes ago, you came in super hot.

Um, well, it is called photos. Um, mmm, let's not let's not make this an officer-involved shooting. Um uh to to promote things occasionally, people from the parks department will go on the local radio show. Yes. Um and they had that too. And uh so it was so exciting to me to hear like the little theme song. Yeah, yeah. Impossibly. And while you're looking that up, I'm going to clarify I did not cook the ramen. Anyways, I I this is a So what happens is she brings her Buzz Later toy with her, you know, that she got you know when Andy went to college. The wait, that Toy Story 3 is a show about oh I mean there's one scene in particular I I'm on board for, but oh wait, no y oh fuck. Um is gonna choose to believe that John Lasseter wants it.

Well, you know, to talk about the the through line. Publishers are talking about books now and how they are more expensive and it's not a good thing. So in so many industries, especially things like retail, labor is the number one. is winning uh fifty-eight uh fifty eight forty something, right? Positively or negatively. How many people voted in uh the 2024 election? like the Nate Silvery d Trumpy, you know, coverage of all of the different pies happens. Is it the presidential election? I mean, I think they're important in general. But don't you get frustrated? is handy because there's nothing that directly causes you to reject it. And just because of the availability heuristic of me having that fact at hand based on information, I might draw conclusions about the rest of the world that are a little bit bananas.

Mm-hmm. I uh I I would become m bitter if I kept watching that all all the time. Important. film yeah yeah and uh like it because you can go and just y use like jur uh what's it called journalism dot com uh na now and it you're g you're not gonna really get much out of this. Like, I don't agree with everything everybody in it says. I I mean this is it's like I said last time about the um the LA documentary I watched where they're using the N word over the radio in nineteen sixty five. No. You don't talk about you say do you want Thai food or Indian food is an example. The dimmer. Or like the way on like Gmail where you can control click to do all, you know, all clickboxes in between here and there.

That is kind of why I've avoided anything except the hue lights and I've been able to because I've I li I love my tiny, tiny little trick apartment will work with Eve. um light in my apartment off uh except for the ones in my bathroom Uh that it's the third and a half worst episode. I can fix this in 30 minutes. uh uh uh a quart of milk that goes bad the next day. Oh yeah, that was Is that from jerking it? Uh I'll listen to that album. Yes. No, you're fucking with Angus McLean. Yeah, I just use it as media buttons and well s not just I should say media buttons and my lights. Oh, not not in a fun way. Yeah, but a delay on top of that, because you can now do that digitally and the whole thing. And uh and so yeah, and and when you play it live, you could do stuff like it add echo to it.

Did paper really get expensive? And if you want to get a little James Burke about it, it was just just interesting because there are so many things that had fallen to uh a a legacy history and economic system based on paper and when that became more costly You're kind of bl uh breaking my brain um because yes, because the way that you're talking about paper, um is sort of uh or at least it's similar to how up to production or sorry, manufacturing, I guess. people leave off the denominator about something. Mm-Blazer Vest that was very upsetting. It's good to know what size the pieces of the pie are, but it kind of pales in comparison to the deeper understanding of how large the pie is. And and look at all these look at the percentage of people that voted for this.

Well, to quote the great Mark Cuban, would you rather own all of a grape or part of a watermelon? No, I I want you briefly glossed over the denominators and ha how uh interesting that is. Yeah, the numerator is one and the denominator is two, which is a way of saying out of two there is one. is that of all the sports, it it seems to attract people who are most intrigued by things like statistics, but at least for most of its history, baseball has also been, by and large, one of the best Seriously, no no no. Like w uh the way that you're watching uh baseball now is how I've always been able to watch baseball and enjoy it. in the United States at the same time. Don't order Carl Jr. But because ultimately, because all I watch now is Adam Curtis, I've come to realize that all of their jobs are about keeping their jobs.

No. There's so much good music. primarily as a source of facts or even secondarily. Until you've seen what the time was like. Um, as Kendicamera, which is a terrible show, Kanda Camera used to say, you know, we we would catch people in the act of being themselves. start fighting very, very violently in front of the stage. Oh, yeah, I think I mean, like whatever it was, I was thinking of Yahoo as being the ones who invented multi-line clicks. Okay. has been very useful unless you need to mark a thing of like I was m miserable and like hallucinating and and nothing happened today and I didn't I did, but I also just killed some of my people. I'm a bit frazzled. No, um the part where you launch it.

John, wait, I'm getting I might get confused here. Because I can't control it, I hear something that David Letterman said in probably nineteen eighty-three, which is he said he would hear and he would use it over and over. I was vaccinated for that. It's like you know about like um Juilliard or or Berkeley would be a good example. Okay, this was not a national election. Claire McCaskill came on. The former Missouri Senator Clara McCaskell. What? New York City, New Jersey, and California. in what you're implying it then means. The whole thing was hot it was hostile toward me and was hostile uh toward No, not not hostile towards the big thing. be a good first Adam Curtis in some ways. This is a phrase we used to use a lot.

What looks like just the normal punk rock show, and you start to realize it's skinheads, and then the skinheads was uh create a shortcut automation that when I click that button it opens, creates, opens or creates today's Today file and takes me to the last place uh that I was in it. I was uh a a while ago I ended up getting the new version because the it was the flora like a flower. And they changed based on time of day and who is at home because Matt likes a specific type of light like um just But I haven't been using those. At least I care about the answer to the question. No, no. No. I mean I'm in the app. Yeah. Of uh Well you made an audio clip and put it on the internet, but you left it, which is sweet of you.

The so it wasn't just the internet the RIP na Napster. This comes up in so many places. Which seems insane. makes it more difficult to confidently compare two things from different times and say like, well, okay, so and l let's go to the craziest example we can think of. I have a pitch if for Shifty. Like in the Soviet Union, he I mean every one of his films in some ways is about how how strange these times are because people don't agree on what's real anymore. of various kinds. Oh well. Is there anything you want to to explore in more detail in a more story-like form? No n Oh, so I'm sorry, Greg. What do you think? I've I've broken all all my buttons, including my keyboard buttons. It's just that it's it's the thing of theirs that uh next to well I I used to use Pietzo. No, I know, I know, because that's your reference. You could do big dropouts all of a sudden I think later than that, but yeah, paper got expensive. I don't think it was newspapers that were suffering, but I think it was more like 13 million. But plurality, if you're doing like an Israeli election or something and you've got like sixty people running. So what I said was to me that would be like becoming the yearbook editor uh uh out of for a high school from a different decade There's other ones where just people just look straight at the camera.

Yep. Yeah, Coldwater Army. Yeah. Is it is it their input or your output? Maybe the texture is just a di maybe was a different brand of ramen. What would it take for me to video content? Oh, I thought it was the neutral milk hotel guy. Uh I got one for turning off or on my fans, and all of the rest are for lights. You know, Berk Berkeley School of Music. What I am saying is like when you leave out the denominator part of that, I think it's difficult to try and infer meaning into these things, is all. What I don't want to do is get high on my own bag of hopium. Uh have you ever heard of the Flick family of of products? This is Do by Friday, a weekly challenge podcast with Alex Cox and Merlin Mann.

Her? But um the um the big thing uh oh my god so that one of your okay so but make a thing But then I tried some ramen from 2016 and Yeah, yeah. It's got a lot, it's got a lot of Megan Omram level like puns in it. Thank you for listening to my program. Here come the here come the kids. Uh nope, nope, I'm not digging. Like where like his people super duper care and we'll come out to defend him. There's not that much I know about Drake. Okay, yeah. That's a good name. Sure. They had a big box. Oh I'm I watch it over and over and it's still funny to me I have often thought I could there are ways that I could really benefit from loop back. Isn't that crazy? It's it's wonderful. There can be more than one refrigerator in the world.

This is it's like when you watch an old video, like a trash theory video on Peter Gabriel and you first learn about Fairlight. They go to the festival place. Song Against Sex might be the best trombone, song and rock music. That's the first that's the first neutral milk hotel song I ever heard. He says, okay, a million people came out and voted. So I was pretty proud of myself that Chetty G and I came up with that. Anyway, it's a morning shock show. In which case I have a bleach bottle. Because you can see how like that that dingling who just ran for governor for the fourth time and lost for the fourth time, you could see that Yeah, no. Like each one of those things And uh those are cute. There's no interface for it apart from clickity click click.

What if I want to make a new scene where they're all Matt compliant? Um and I uh I just really enjoy it. See, I was making an actual joke. That's you. That's cool. And then right next to that they'll say, Donald Trump He says like a million people in California, I think was the I think was the number, came out. But it wasn't for a year Well, okay, and what are you gonna do with that? I even know stuff like this. And they're throwing furniture. I love that. I'm gonna say uh three three and a half. But this was an interesting because in this was probably nineteen ninety four or five. When what I'm really trying to say is two-thirds of the people in my house won't do that. Oh my god, this is so complicated.

That's a hell of a movie. The one that's I get confused about do you remember there's a thing they added like I don't know at least five years ago? And w It takes time it takes time. Um and then I think that became a thing where people were like people like shock jocks or whatever were using it to make prank calls. You going forty eight or forty four? Have you gotten the new order? Have you gotten it to work? The switch, the tap switch. Oh, like in the uh I see what you're saying, yes. You done? That's an involved that's an in uh involved week. Oh look Bao Bao That's such a good and who some the person who directed that did like red maybe? I know you're smart, man. And like because I began the evening with this, I don't know why, what is wrong with me.

Well, as it turns out, Billboard I wasn't watching for bad news. And I would say it's I mean it's kind of his take on the Thatcher era, but that's doesn't even begin to get into it. Anyways, so good. So I didn't I didn't socialize it with the family. Uh no that's that that is hard to believe a decade ago. Um little late to change the name of it now. She has nothing to add. Um so I did this thing, you get an action button on a phone now, and I wanted to make it something good. It's gonna be short for this episode if you really want to be happy. Did you did you make this on a stream deck? Her? Oh my god. Like the little Princess Diana being a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit You know, people were just they were just dicks about the Beatles for years.

How are you going to capitalize on last night? You're hating each other wrong. Every Wiimo thing you ever bought, if it still works, it's an accident. But you did not turn in Um oh boy, here wait Oh that's what happened this morning But we also had full bars. No, you wouldn't take a bite. A lot a lot of what came out of that was some combination of sounding like Oh well R A R A P Craigslist. There's a Flipboy. Right? And 'cause I I don't want to say Greg. Jeez. Well, I mean no, I've bought hardcover books, but I haven't thought about it very much. Do you agree with Prop 50? Ooh, CGP Cree video And that's how we get fractions, right? But there's the sweaty Congress people are here and uh the lady with the big glasses uh is everybody and everybody's so happy.

Oh, oh my god, in the Viking boat. Over we know that over time women have made claims of assault. You never know. I want full bars. Forget it. You're not there yet. Who learns that? You didn't actually make this, did you? And a guy named Lee Scratch Perry uh was one of the pioneers of that. It's all good news in that sense. And that hasn't changed anything. I'm not as angry as a lot of you. So like it's horrible and it makes you so uncomfortable watching it, but it's like that's the charity. And we've all heard stories or know know people who've gotten a very uh uncomfortable But um May you live in a world where you never have to change a home kit scene. Yeah, I think it died a while ago. Um so if I've forgotten, you know, but I uh leave, touch my pocket.

I uh I've seen the show. But you anyways, so You've got shortened seasons because of the strike. And admittedly, today it might be millions of people who know who Drake is, but like I don't run into Drake songs, just like walking around So I on uh Amazon I just got one of those like smarty We're done. You know that list we have of of what do we call it? That's where talking heads went. Right? And it's not it's not all great. And this is deep in the thread so nobody's With the guy with the guy from the leftovers? Where like I don't watch his stuff If you ever want to be Okay, stop talking for a second. Or the idea that um like for example, Crazy Thing, uh You Can't Touch This by MC Hammer was never released as a single.

The new order song while the horse gallops around. And I'm in some ways even more pleased with my self-awareness to remember to use it. I came in frazzled, I broke Merlin, I broke the button. I think that was funny, but I didn't know know the reference. And so we had this proposition, because we're California, and he goes, look at this. That's all I'll say about that. For how successful he is, I don't know that much. And when somebody like Jeffries gets up there and like what he really wants to say is that guy in New York is fucking us up. What is what does yours mean? I think you took it. That's what I mean. Um Buzz Lightyear gets left behind and ends up in the in like the basement of And I I don't Oh it's not that funny, Alex.

I will not talk about Do we need to talk about politics on Do by Friday? Oh, that's a hell of a movie. I was clever enough to figure out that's you know, just just creating a new file wouldn't be smart because then I'd have They they gotta go on, and she's trying to be all serious and keep it straight. Yeah. You you never know. What? And they're all DJ Blue Jay. If you wanted a soundboard, probably Stream Deck. You produce the product. Um and labor is always the big cost, right? Oh, I don't know. Because Yeah, and like maybe one thirty like one thirteenth smaller. I have never seen it They don't care. I really enjoyed it and be uh like most of what it's doing is using Yes. We we only had three channels.

He was a brought he was a uh an announcer and news guy on WFSU. It's Wally, right? Okay, fine. No. Immune to narrative. Don't act dumb. And in a and and the funny part is because again, because we're California You guys are so cute. I've seen stuff. All right, well tell me all about it. Like where's the problem coming from? Okay. Um GIT was kind of like Berkeley, but for guitar players. That to me is a much bigger deal. I was watching for good news. So I said to me Okay, because even when you get it right and it works once and you say test this scene We're done. In the two appearances I remember, one of them is Chinese Greg uh and the other one is um is Jewish Greg. What are you doing? You said you you wouldn't because you just want the mouthfeel.

That's I'm Yes. I think that was what he said, something like that. Is that right? It's so much more fun to watch for me. Oh my god. Deep, deep, deep dives and a really talented team who is plugged into Like if you don't if you aren't ready to read things on screen the second they're up. And I thought that was really cool. You can find a list out of there, out there of all the colors you can pick. Hmm. And I was up with that. It sounds like the answer to that is yes. Uh uh and yeah, it's called dub. Anyhow, uh there's a a bunch of election things last night that a lot of us were following closely, and one of them was a proposition called It's a pretty obscure kind of election, but A I no, no, I don't but it's it's that's the Peace Corps.

Um the what were you f uh following last night and like what did you I want to see if all the good stuff won and it did. I pitch count. Like big ice, big i dinged! I mean, uh this this week's challenge But my point is they Bonnie, you know She says my cowboy. There's one bit where Mike D. W uh uh when I am watching NBC, ex exactly what uh what you said, I'm like, okay, I And they go, Well, that just shows you the strength of our Big Ten party. I mean one thing Like that was from the mid 2000s. Yeah, and uh I mean I'm I'm I'm just So w where do you stand now? Um not even toilet paper. Yeah, yeah, they had costumes. Let's be a dick about it. It's skinheads fighting each other. Um and it Not Jeff Tweety.

Well you wait, so so okay, sorry. But and I pretend to understand, but I And and there's that phrase that I didn't used to understand that word outperforming or underperforming. This is so important. Denominators are so different on all of those things that trying to compare them is manic. And their job is not to help us. And I mean it's really bad. I have never tried it. Plays plays the guy in the city council. I could make a case it's a show about the Holocaust. All right, that's actually that's crazy interesting because I had to buy another one. Oh my god, ah you're frazzled. Well you don't. I think I went out to eat with you once. 'Cause part of what makes noodles good, at least according to videos I've watched, is people like uh exactly the fr one thing that I think noodle John Lassiter?

Oh that's a good button. Did you make a virtual stream deck, which is apparently now a thing? And um what is what is the interface for that look like? Megan M Megan Amram, she's got the best Twitter photo of all time back in the day. Ca well there's the problem is there's a l there's there's a little giveaway buzz light year there who thinks he's the real buzz light year. I'm not gonna send it to you now. Yes or no? Mm-hmm. Is that true? Yes. It's so frustrating. It is a good name. Okay. Right, right. Chocolate is kind of candy. But then I've got to do that. And if you obviously, but if you just tell people d half of the people voted for this And y you're a better smarter person th than I that you can watch Chuck Schumer and not just Yeah, no, it's it's super good.

You're both so cute. And QED, as I have become so fond of discussing, stop pretending you knew what a time was like. And then you can blah blah blah. What am I what am I to draw from that? You picking you p you picking your wattage? The denominators I think are important because I mean uh the phrase I keep hearing is the pitch clock. I'm not as demonstrative about the things in the world I can't change as a lot of you. The p the point, I think ultimately, of Now Dougie might not allow you to have these. You hid it. Bring me the head of Ambi Davis. That's a denominator thing. I'm sick of watching TV and hearing that fucking music and seeing that needle jump Like he he had more access. I don't know.

Like there's polls there too. Exactly. And every time I see the word poll, I mean you know way more. So Unbelievably fast I can change away from her. I think I might know the name of Two Drake songs, and I think he did that video that became a meme. Nothing again, nothing against. I've never seen it like this. Well like okay, and you know how I do that now? It's like a test, right? Could it be that you have bad headphones? So so what happens is they go to um um this this hilarious medieval themed I it it always frustrates me when Think of it as a pie graph, right? And you say, well, here's the number of people who who buy computers. Well, imagine I don't know Also, uh this nice Spotify playlist that always brings you joy Right back in the truck with egg.

That's No, but I mean Craigslist, you know, that's that's the reason we don't have newspapers now. You've got the maybe in advance. Do you want this yes or no? You're right, yeah. And this actually came up in the seventh game because And that's a lot of what these are. So title. I just didn't know because I officially emailed about it. I don't know. Will there be any context for people understanding what you're talking about? And but m but the the Democratic candidate, was it There's things about the whole like intentional walk thing is completely fucking bananas and should be banned. You can mm-hmm. Okay. com. And if I click that button in the right rail, it'll take me right to that file. That's what I call it.

Go ahead. Yeah. And I've been using that for, I don't know, a month or so, and I love it. One that's the tap switch. You don't, but no, but I'm just I'm I'm I'm It's so good. I I what if I had a what if I had yes, I can make them into a group. So two buttons that have worked consistently for six days. Tear up one roll. He would say something like, We pulled over a hundred Americans, and then he would look directly at the camera and say, and I think we all know how painful that can be. It's called small fry. Right? So there's a lot of levels to it. Um, Jeff. Those are very, so we got a pie over here. Now one over two is a lot. Let's just say, okay, you know that Caitlin Deaver, Tony Collette thing, unbelievable.

God, when Amazon would sell you a button just for reordering a particular box of gain Chief Chief Constable. You're saying nouns that feel f It's got oh my gosh, it's got uh Taekwondo, which is a deer that does uh Well what I use it for. Yeah. I just made a thing that doesn't Interesting denominators. Good for you. We only had one. Um so you know buttons There was a half really, really bad a couple. Have you ever heard that one? What'd you screw up? So sometimes I just need to pause and say, have you ever heard of GTI, the guitar institute or GIT, the Guitar Institute of Technology? But it's a very interesting trend line, but hang on. If you want one hundred percent of a million, that's th still not nearly as good.

No bringing up. Uh no, not supposed not to be a good one. We're watching so many things with Patricia Arquette right now. And What the fuck? And sick for um Hello, hello, hello. Oh yeah. For TV coverage, they go see uh Shauna Mulway tweet I didn't give them f I didn't give 'em full bars. No, that's called oh I know that. They're all so fucking funny and stupid. Their job is to keep their job or get a better job. No, no, no, no. Well, I mean it sounds to me like you're assuming that I'm done. I pay one a week. It's by Angus. I'm not gonna cry. Um then you didn't you left off my very funny my very funny answer. Just in the sense that like what's it's like one thing one thing about people who love baseball, for example I think last night I got this all along, especially everything Rachel Maddow was um anchoring.

Oh How'd you get frazzled? I have a photo. I think that's a reference. I know a total of like five Beyoncé songs And I actually thought You see denominators more. And then you gotta open that goddamn MIDI app. Oh my god, this is a big thing. How about this? No, keep ranting. I think labor is the big cost for almost everything, historically. So if you say one over two. I'm joking. No. It was it was just f petered out, just felt like It uh You're just staring at my finger. Yeah. Then you do lights off. It's very funny. Ditto here. That was it. But let's not go crazy And as much of And if that's close enough to what you want to be your default set, then create a new scene based on that. That's a great button.

Now that's a denominator problem. Making a soundboard out This is like that scene in Wally where he learns about dancing. He's such a coward. I think one of the things that is a basis for everything he says is like, how do you know what you know? Hmm. I dinged! Let's call that the denominator. I will send it to you even though it's dirty. Like You know, I I could say something like, um No, I'm not broken, I'm fine. Do you remember uh one of my one of my my absolute favorite movies of my kid's childhood, Jeff C Rickett Ralph. Anyways, that's I didn't know if he had a special deal. No no no this this is this isn't These are not load-bearing magnets. But a website that's co-written by the woman who used to cut my hair I mean I broke it.

Uh-huh. Yeah, yeah. No, I'm just I'm just I'm just guessing. And that's just in baseball. But Um, so um, Adam It's very, very violent. Mm-hmm. A long time ago. And right next to that they can show the That's a very different denominator. Somebody put it on YouTube, but There's another one, they've got one that's called the Hue Dimmer. They're kind of like And he could just hit a button and play it. I think we all know how painful that can be And in that case more information is wrecking her life. Big fridge. Oh found a photo of uh my friend Ben. You got your kilowatts all set up? Did it give my buttons? If you've got a pie graph. You're only really incentivized to vote for something you super care about.

But then okay, so that's just one example. Sometimes the entire career. I I bragged to you this week. It's really good. And I still have the copy of the Beastie Boys Grand Morial magazine that has him. Uh Well no, coalition governments, you know what I mean? That's not a no no um so Because it's such a fucking pain to do anything in that app. What broke Did you just have to like reset a bunch of stuff this uh really quickly? We had exactly one group of trick-or-treaters. And the answer is they probably won't do it at all You posted Yep. 'Cause it's neat because they got uh three outlets with three buttons, but you can also I don't I don't need it I like your ones Does it come in men's You're miss oh fuck it.

Because now I use it a lot and I'm loving my action button You click that what are the chances that it works the first time you click it? I've enjoyed What what how did you oh my gosh, buttons I'm sorry. Yeah But you see how that's w you can see her being drawn into this thing. Because you you're you're very involved in this You know who I'm referring to here? I think you're wearing some kind of uh corrective uh cast or something. Have you ever done that? It appends it uh so that I know I don't want to spoil Toy Story, but at one point there's a there's a there's an animated toy cowboy who says Angus McLean. And and then the the response to this stuff is to then come out or They didn't deserve full bars.

No really? What's up with that treasure trail, big skirts? And I also I think the numerators of life start making a ton more sense. Yes. And I'm just trying to like form it into something. And what does that mean? Did you see that you ever see that video last fuckable day? And I could never make it stick. So you were making you look nice on your soundboard. I wonder if it got But they it's fast food place where it'd be funny. You do a dub mix. Um You're a regular Lee scratch parry. It's great. We would need a big refrigerator for everybody. Just Uh the dimmer kind. Oh this is pretty good. Hi Alex, how are you? You ever have to open the MIDI app? You take it broader, all these different things.

But his God has producer's money fucking How does It's not important to the story. Talking about a signal chain? It's half. Drake puts out a new album and every single song. It's by that person I like Oh no. This is so crazy. Whereas a cynical person might say, not saying me, That's their job And you could tell And so the people from Poland? Well but Um and Um Grappling Hook Gary. Now what else did Angus McLean do? I'm sorry, I apologize. Um for Other examples. I I love her career. Uh in my it might it might play Vivaldi or something. Never mind. That's a different thing I was saying that to me, Adam The charity is called that. Uh they not only still Oh so anyhow But so that was I mean And that made me very frustrated last night.

Well what does that mean? That's really great. That's what makes us different. Have you used them? Yeah. That was the kind of thing they'd do. Same same with parliament. Talking about signal chain. When they started counting YouTube and Spotify No please please keep keep going please. I said I was killing this challenge, and I still think Exactly one I could never find anything I'm no no no serio uh Do you know what kind of amp draw you're getting? There's some like a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of I don't know or something. Look at how well this passed. You wanna take another shot at that one or is that what you're going with?

Oh. It's it's very, very good. And y if if this was just six days That's cool. So all I did. Well, I mean when you try to c how do you compare Oh my god. Collect your string Everybody always wants to have me join their group. Have you seen that part yet? So hey everybody. I don't know any of the words to it. I learned about it like last month. Um Where's the loop back part? There's a lot of business with Dex I bought a few. raw transcript
