No timestamps yet for this episodeWatch the perfect neighbor. Note First time members of the Mel's mouth meat makers club receive a colorful eye damage to the delicate tissues of my mouth at Mel's adhesive ribbon. So basically it's just like a soft-ended thing that's weighted, if you can make if you can imagine that. And then in through s this amazing stroke of luck, uh he became the buyer for sporting goods for a small chain of department stores in Cincinnati. I don't think I've ever really thought about why it's called Chinatown. But it was a time when, you know, people were more and more aware of these kinds of things. and they were doing that, oh, we're teenagers and we can get away with stuff thing. Yeah. Sometimes obviously they take them to the to the you know to the police station but whatever they had to do it cost ten something like ten thousand dollars just to like deal with the biohazard part.
I I'm watching this envious of the community these people have because it reminds me so much. Yeah yeah yeah it it's like she's a she's the Boo Radley if Yes I wanted uh there is a point too where she s um th there's footage of uh I'm trying to take the hit on this, but I see a lot of my family in this. Because she's 90. And in some ways, let's be honest to like speak in a certain way that you know you're not going to get pushback from anybody around you, even in a business context. But but cops are I I it's my understanding that cops are, and this is why there's that that wonderful thing that has been watched whatever over 20 million times, why you should never talk to the police, that video on YouTube.
But anyway, Susan, okay, yeah. So at this point, anything you tell me I can't use, I think was the phrase that he used, but we see how that modality works. I really super doubt that exculpatory evidence makes it into the obsession. Like sort of like with the Danny McBride one of these, where I was like, oh man, he's even cooler than I thought. And we should put this into notes. Hello, hello, hello. This is something that we had for our entire Oh shit. By and not you're not doing targets. Johnny Space Commander is where you take the dry cleaning back and put it over your head and inhale. And they're screaming their heads up. And within a couple minutes of these cops arriving and then more cops arriving because they love calling in their friends, you have a biohazard scene.
at this thing. Family. Uh Merlin, I truly came into this thinking like there's going there has to be n not an excuse, but some sort of explanation. racist in ways they didn't understand, or or couldn't understand, living in Cincinnati in the fifties and sixties. Yes. And like, oh yeah, yeah, we got video of you. There's some good vials of poison, probably. And she gets she gets angry when she watches something like this. Uh like she uses her emotions in a way that a black woman never could, or a black man. Oh no, you're doing a bit. Yes. What? Crumble tops. See, I think one thing people get confused about in in this the season of uh of of pumpkin spice that uh cinnamon by itself, man. Please.
Serve with your choice of fun dipping sauces. I'm sorry, I gotta do the mix thing again. But all wait, you had a department store chain in one medium-sized town? where it's got the three uh what do they call them f not fletches, but you know, the you got the like the fins that give it, you know, stability. you've got the shaft, and then at the end of the shaft is a big ass weight, probably made of lead, and then just past the big lead weight is a thr two or three inch long sharpened piece of metal. full on ninety degrees you were like This is a very rarefied this is a very rare lonely boy version of this game. I'm not a scientific, but it is my belief, based on evidence, that some of you can probably imagine what occasionally happened when a bunch of unsupervised children in nineteen seventy-five threw a like a one-pound Well, you know, I mean I'm not gonna go on about this, but the you look at something like the era before uh Ralph Nader.
at least the white guy version of when consumer advocacy and the notion of consumer protection started really kicking in because the whole point of that book and that project was, hey look You know, this this happened with other car kinds of cars later. So I wonder if kind of like pickleball has come back, which I always thought of as like a children's sport. Two reasons I know. Because they're fancy white people who are used to getting the court when they want. But I liked the parents. I'm not saying it's I'm not trying to excuse it because if you remember the way this whole anecdote began is this is one of the most shameful moments in my life. That's fucking. it's a real life documentary thing.
You gotta turn everything off and w there is it's almost I wanna say it's almost silent, by which I just mean there's almost n not a single word of English in the whole thing, and there's not even that many words. except for the words that are on screen a lot. uh about a crime that happens, a murder that h at least a manslaughter that happens, where this white woman, the only white woman in the neighborhood, shot a mother of four because she didn't like her kids playing football in the next yard. First, for some reason I was thinking it's the East Coast, but I think it's near Ocala. So some of the times you can see one of the cops because it's the other cops camera picking them up as well as the people they're talking to.
Well I'm just guessing. uh who has children from a black man or a or a uh you know a Hispanic man. when it's uh th this is the two the two cops the two cops the two cops who so often will split up and go talk to different groups of people at the same time Yeah. You know, and I don't know. See what he's doing in Utah? Yeah. If if if you somebody was over here playing or like making noise near your house and you called us, we'd get have to like and I is that really, really true? And in a much, much darker, absolutely existentially crushing scene uh near the end of the movie, there's another uh black man. And B, which one is the f the second man who's tell breaking the news is th their father, is that correct?
Uh this documentary was a absolutely as horrific as I thought. And like a lot of Americans, I suspect that they probably don't have six months of income saved up and they live pretty close to what we might consider the edge. But it really does feel like that. And something that we have that is somewhat rare, honestly, which is the flexibility to be at a track meet at four PM in Golden Gate Park. I mean, that's first of all, goddamn, that's you sh you should get a uh something. And but the way they say it is both like incredibly funny and also like she is a villa like the way she might as well say that like a that's a villain. And somebody tried to knock down my damn fence trying to get out. I don't know man, I think it's right in front of you.
of ways we could be less of a piece of shit, which then puts us in a position to now know we might very well be a piece of shit. with he was very comfortable doing that over the radio in 1965. Like if somebody girl called you a Nazi, would you spend the rest of the weekend thinking about what you could do better? It's on the Ohio River, right? Where I would pretend to be uh an uppity straight lady who is very persona you would take on with customer service people, right? who does who might have a kid but just doesn't really know how to talk to kids in a very very wholesome way where sometimes I'm like uh trying to relate to a kid like hey uh yin school yet I hear I hear you're you're you're back to school.
in vandalism or you know, whatever it is, you might look good for that crime right now and they could close that case real fast and and get home, you know, in time to watch cops on TV or whatever. And it's the reason I've told my kid never talk to a cop. They can claim evidence that they don't have. Especially you saw what did I call them? almost like seduction community shit. Like watching cops who are good at that. I mean and the way gosh, what a cast. because all of my impr all the ways I imprinted on him were as like a an innocent and a good I never saw him as a child actor, but I know him from at that time from Friday Night Lights and Fargo. uh before you repatriate them to the people who sold their children.
The um just the website. white woman's voice to tell stories of travels with African men. in my cheeks to display what I meant. So a Is this a sad mad movie? Jiji Crumble Tops, all of our locations, notional future locations that open, they will be open to all people and women. At any dead mall in all of the Chicago land area. There's the audience of folks who um are big Elaine fans from Seinfeld who wanted you know the You've got the parts that are freed. And this you attach your hose to this plastic strip, you put it on the grass, and the idea is it shoots a stream of water across this plastic. And at least in the commercials, you kind of just run a little bit and then you jump and slide on like your I mean, but it's it's on a horizontal surface, right?
No. Oh, come on, you piece of. Does that make sense? But you can buy vintage. Oh, great logo, great tag logo. Or as you say, bags. The circle. Uh that doesn't mean you're not gonna do the thing that every single child did with these. Now, here's the thing, and this is part of what makes this is the other part of what makes America great. And you huck it straight up into the air as hard as you can to see how high the jart can go. You know, and the Corvair, unsafe at any speed. A bag of broken pieces of glass. In in particular, people were using dry cleaning bags, which is to say the clear plastic bags that go over your dry cleaning when you bring home. Uh darts are still quite a thing in pubs in the UK, which I didn't know.
I think it looks fun. Yeah, this is too close to the challenge, good lord. yogurt and jizz or whatever. C-I-N-C-Y. And you can appreciate as somebody who I I memory serves, let me check my notes here. super interesting and I couldn't stop talking about it last week so it seemed obvious to suggest that Alex watch that. Don't tell me anything. that's been sitting in the BBC archive for years and he finds a use for it and puts like this puts a song over it and like it's you've seen hyper normalization or you've seen some of those, right? We see one very prominent uh tattoos those tattoos are doing her no favors. She's one of the most villainous nonfiction characters I've ever seen in my life. uh uh uh unbelievable levels while also underplaying the bullshit that she has been doing that everybody sees by calling with this white woman.
And the amount of times they have to try to get it. who would sleep, I think, in the same store's doorway in the Castro, somewhere near the Castro. You know. Including mental health, including, you know, access to resources, including dru uh drug interdiction, like all all these different kinds of things. uh how difficult it is to get anything done. Especially like northern European uh countries that have figured out ways to deal with these things that are different than how we deal with things. the Netherlands come to mind for having uh a different approach to these kinds of problems than we have here. For making a bureaucracy, it's not a system for making effective government that responds to the dynamic needs of a populace.
D do you know what I mean? Using a tragic backstra reveal uh is major puppy of mine, but this lady is so awful. When she when he's talking to the woman who was killed, who I love. And she does a black she does a black woman thing. uh couples and uh people lived when I say lived at each other's houses, you I like, you know, p you would consider people uh You did a great explanation of jealousy versus envy. something that you've got and jealousy is when I don't want you to have something neither of us has. I no no no because I She's jealous of these happy families. Yes, I do and the way the second woman they talk to starts like saying she didn't throw the sign and a little girl pops up. It I mean this is as I understand it anyway, there's a pretty old thing in African American communities in America of like largely, especially families run mainly by women.
Where women and men, but especially women, look out for each other's kids or discipline each other's kids. I every kid in this is But you think that it takes a village to raise a child and this really that's such a cliche for the last thirty years, but it you really And a true one to like what kind of patagonia you're wearing. person or whatever, but she's she is kind of like big timing the people and the cops a lot. She sounds like she's in a different world. That woman has a lot more options, not least that she has the skin color to get more credibility with people. and like get her to talk to the cops for some reason or other. The cliche that's true that everybody should be thinking, if that wasn't a s a 19-year-old black man, it would have gone There's something where her Nissan her grain Nissan truck, you're right, there's not a lot of detail because they don't have care coverage of that.
W some what the hell? And like, well there are options if you've got four kids and are a single mom who manages the McDonald's Because and like that's what I'm talking about. And it begins by playing some actual radio of cops, basically who are what do they call that when you're a just like a dispatcher? of cops actually dispatching other cops during what became known as the Watts Riots. It wasn't just in the 90s. uh and exploring that further on our terms is something that's valuable for all of us to do. it became like you in terms of effectiveness, like it wasn't effective. And I can see moments in my past where I have made terrible decisions without realizing She's just she's always mad about like the people who work in her building don't speak English and like and it's just like every call with her is just excruciating to me from Columbus.
And I think what I said one time was that Cincinnati is like if Kentucky and Indiana got drunk one night and made a racist baby. So like in Indiana, when you go out when you go out to Indiana and you're gonna like, you know, drive to the um drive to Indianapolis or whatever, as like even in Cincinnati, like even going to King's Island, as soon as you are outside of back in the day or uh like red man ads or like confederate flags. But you think you think there's more there's more Confederate flags in Indiana than Alabama? Because I mean, to some people, look at D. town, even just a little bit. Or David Duke was running, maybe he was ninety-two, but David Duke ran for president and he used to be like a kind of a big gun in the KKK and he got support.
Yeah. Mm-hmm. uh I would basically be like, oh God, I am so sorry. get this hotel number. feeds into it. Oh the the yes the yes sir type of situation where at some point someone is uh going to be so angry at you in a customer service and it None of these people are social workers. g uh cops, but showing how the black woman cop has to act versus the guy who can basically blow it off and be like, I don't fucking care. Something bad might happen. Because maybe you look good for that as I'm using phrases from T V now. There's th there's these things these uh Wall Street Fat Cats don't want you to know. Um, I've got I've got Mary in that room. And he's in mode one. You are the cop and you have the power.
And that's when she flips into mode one, right? Mode one is just to keep things chill, but then you've got to move in for the close, and that's when you remind them that they do not have any power. And when she's laid low like that, like what are you gonna do? I think I think you've got you've got a fancy lawyer like she's got a doctor like she's got a doctor's degree. the way that they are slowly, slowly, slowly in that final scene, building, building, building, building. was catching fugitive slaves. You know, in a role like he says with game night, he read like two pages and called his agent was like, I don't even care, just get me in. That is super duper fucked up and highlight the worst about humanity and really downplay the better angels of our nature, including your own.
She got madder and madder as we watched it. So when when I say like uh I absolutely like im immediately you see yourself I think is by you, hi, uh do the um unseemly thing and address the the audience. Call 58A2300 Empire And then they had to jam in the toll free And and they they took out the beautiful call and and changed it to eight hundred five eight eight two three hundred. Yes, and but I did not know the Oh yes, yes, there is a video um of the Empire Today logo history, 1977 to present. Because I and find out if you can who made them because JJ Crumbletops is going to be uh is gonna need some help with our identity stuff. That's rough. I'm doing alright. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Uh and uh I think uh do people people know what slip and slides are, right?
Happy birthday I see it so clearly. ask a question unless not ask a question unless they know the answer to it. uh I'm aware of because there is a game. And so already we've got a very 1970s story here, which is a guy who used to be in broadcasting, gets a job at Brenda Moore's, and then goes and works at at this other place that has uh at the time I think three or three or four. And well, you understand what I was saying earlier about you throw this thing, it's like a sandbag, but it's got a handle, so it gets a trajectory. Because it's a lawn dart. So were there like house well mm lawn rules where if it was like sticking straight like ne m metal munition into the air with multiple children around.
Um because I still have a very specific recollection of something I now know Jim Downey wrote wrote, and it was a running bit in the first or second season of SNL, maybe later, but it was a bit with Jane Curtin and Dan Aykroyd Irving Mainway, the uh founder uh and owner of uh Mainway Enterprises or Mainway Toys. Uh oh, the bag that was around my big my new gallon of silica beads. is on that plastic. No, ask yourself, are you the Karen in this story? Uh the only word for it is I I feel ashamed about. any liquids that they didn't want to recycle. Oh my god, the four. gotten what the consent or I was happy about all of that. Okay, let's get started. a really astonishing. and use it to tell a story.
It's uh let me start with the the technical part. exists. It's almost all from the POV of what police cameras captured about a series of events that happened in um uh where was it? If they send two cops out to like go, you know, see what the Karen's mad about, you've got And you guess my favorite shot of the movie. is a moment where two cops are looking at one another and they know that shit is gonna to go are is shit's gonna go down because they've been to this neighborhood so many times to his body cam, and that's when we sort of first see the inner cutting between the two characters um he would throw feces and blood at the cops every time they came to like sh and so basically every time somebody called the cops to come get this guy, I want to give you the whole s thing here.
pretty I think he was schizophrenic probably, right? Well, I I mean, there's also got I things like just the there's the human factor in everything, but like we look at uh it's always seems like such a cop out to talk about Europe. I say in I say uh not in spite of but because of the connectedness. Unique situation. are playing football in a yard that isn't hers. And the yard, there's a yard next to hers that isn't her yard. And oh boy, I th can I do this? Or I mean not ha I don't know. schools are have such better funding. But um and so in a community of raising a bunch of kids and parents agreeing on a set of values. You may not even realize how much stuff is easier for you than it is for other people, but it this woman who on more than one occasion is kind of reminding us she calls herself a doctor and even though apparently no one's been able to figure out anything she done.
big time about money or power or flexibility. How privileged I was in in that given situation. Fucking hey yes. Well, w without dragging any particular state. clan. openly racist. the i some sort of customer service interaction where all you can say is yes sir, yes sir, and you've lost all all agency. Well He wasn't being horrible to the kids, is what I'm saying. Some words I'm trying to use less because of its internalized misogyny and I don't think it's nice that I use them against women. I mean, I'm I'm in in maybe 70% of situations, if you're a white kid, you'll probably be fine, but you have to go into every situation with a cop. Whether or not all that is true for all places and all times, it was very thought-provoking to me.
She tries to be cute with the cop and she tries to do her Karen act well while the cop is in mode one. And now I need to just let you know. And he's it's funny though because he's basically presenting it as you're making you're making this a pain in the ass for me. Um, you said you're not gonna talk to me. The last thing I kept thinking about is where is this woman's lawyer? Really good, you know, one of those uh Jesse Plummins breaks down his most iconic characters. Who I may I guess in the story is like, as things go, a pretty good guy. He um I guess he read the book and then he the way he put it, I think, is that he did a lot of like read a book on like the history of the Texas Rangers. you know, you you go to church and do Pilates does not make you a good person.
Oh shit, oh shit, uh fuck. Can see yourself in this woman im immediately and just read. But you like the intensity of mouth experience, is that right? It doesn't look fun, although putting an entire spice in your mouth at once, uh that sounds like something I would do, but it It really doesn't, because you only eat white food that has no taste. is such a great product because your customer base is going to be huge. Everything's cyclical. Um supply, but I don't think we should think of it. of what started as lawn darts is you get these and I had these in later in my childhood is like, you know, it's basically almost like a beanbag. Uh any motivation that you knew of just You know, it's it's this is one of those things.
And uh Chevy was like not doing anything about it. And she was there was like a, you know, an interview show and this guy his name was obviously gonna do this from memory. Mm-hmm. Try cleaning back. You've never narked on somebody. You know. And but the build-up, and there's so many levels we can attack this on. doesn't like the kids doing what they do in her neighborhood. It does seem like a majority black and brown neighborhood, but we see many, uh not many, but there's a number of people. Who always calls the cops on kids and then greatly exaggerates, on the one hand, greatly exaggerates what the kids are doing, sometimes too like All of the like you said, there are many types of cops in this movie, but all of them are a perfect example why uh cops should not and cannot act as social workers.
that gives you some idea of why uh unhoused people uh are uh why it's such a problem here. They got a nice big yard. When um when so this one cop who I didn't particularly like uh is saying to her, she's saying, look, you know, that woman over there, she rents that house. Yeah. accurately t told from what you find what uh oh no, j just that there are a lot of um there were a lot of uh just w what you would expect, like intermixing of uh Living in rented, rented like just kind of above mobile home quality duplexes. The the thing that hit um me was how and kinda it made me feel um God fuck what is She uh the But she's from the jump she's complaining. And they very quickly identify that it's the Karen that did it, acting like a goddamn crazy person.
got very emotional with a uh with the front desk because he couldn't get yeah and I I often think about the m the Martha and how It feels like you do deserve to just get the fucking hotel number. somewhat either known or deliberate failures of customer service systems and like how there's things that are a feature not a bug, like disconnecting calls and stuff like that. the the Ritz Carlton and you know the higher the the more upscale the place typically the more agency you have to do whatever your customers w want. Mm-hmm. No, no, I I loved the uh not depiction of of cops, uh just that is how co cops are and the various levels of uh empathy and again it is not to defend I I no, I thought it was very cute how uh it it seemed like he was the kind of guy who was talking to kids in a normal way.
And uh just they they are aware of what's happening and eventually, I don't want to say they dilly dally, but Trying to be like the bad cop. Mm-hmm. And then there's this jump scare where she like, one minute. Do you want to talk to me? this was past. Mm-hmm. No. Okay. in San Francisco in August, you would have more fun with it than if somebody gave you, say, a pound of lard in Chicago in August. Oh Uncle Jack, you so crazy. so gray. It was called Chinatown. Um anyhow cutlery, I don't know. And uh and that's how he got me like a basketball signed by John Havlichek. Jarts, which is a very cool word. So, but there was, and then what's funny is, uh you probably haven't watched it yet, but uh I recommend to everybody out there who enjoys has good taste and con likes comedy uh the the special about Jim Downey.
on uh Peacock called Downey Wrote That. Because if you think about it, it makes a ton of sense. But that's you know when I was a child I spoke as a child and I thought as a child and I and I threw weighted darts in the air at my friends. But almost exclusively makes very compelling documentary. footage from the BBC archive, which can be stuff like stories they ran in the 60s or 70s, but it could also a lot of it, the most amazing stuff is just B-roll. um interstitial, you know, current real real time B B roll. And then some of them seemed like pretty nice. Her sitting alone in the room at the police station? I don't know. Let me just say it reminds me of The Wire. Um do you oh fifteen minutes into this movie I I wro I wrote down I'm trying so hard to have any empathy for this woman As in I don't want other men you know no d I'm just sorry, I'm just saying we're not.
Some cop talking to a guy. to any situation that where I feel like it applies, I can tell you that my reaction to that was an irrational panic that you should excuse because of something that happened to me. made weird excuses, ad hoc Okay, let's be nice about it. uh the way that they talk about and treat people. would refer to how many people and what kind of weapons and in every instance he would say it's four N words with a sod off shotgun. Because I'm sure I veered into like I am I feel like I deserve this type of territory. Very well-made film. They know what the deal is and one one night like. They can just say shit to you to get you to do something. Mm-hmm. Because they want to convict you.
And to I'm thinking I was trying to think emotions were a bad idea. Now Merrill Garvis uh Garbus. 'Cause back back when I watched when I would watch WGN in the eighties, it would just be it would just be like um they did the guy, there was the guy, and then the cartoon version of the guy that they added later. Um number two, uh Bobby B. Because it's solid at room temperature, but it melts because it's a just a big fat thing. So I mean eventually it just turns into a lukewarm a lukewarm liquid. Again, depends on the viscosity. Literally yes. Um idea of uh a a a competitive game where you gotta get something from one place to another and you compete with another person. Okay, do you want to hear about my dad's job or do you want to hear about lawn darts first?
like past the post, uh is it leaning, is it partly inside? No, I'm almost there. I uh w I don't know to describe it. And then within a couple hours he was back in the doorway. And then that form gets passed on to somebody who's not there. And and the last uh either way it looks like she's someone who uh lives in so much in anger and fear that she's going to end up killing somebody. These people do not these people. Very differently. For why something happened. to why I I ended up watching this film twice. Uh no, no. What the uncut shit is. And um why am I telling you this? Do you guys understand why a lot of organized American law enforcement exists? any s series of five points in the history of American law enforcement and ask you whether oh it's just a few bad apples or is that actually how the system works?
This was such a fun challenge. As having a role in that hatred. That uh that is indeed a bit but I So what did you did you have breakfast you enjoyed? Yeah, yeah. I have yet to make any money from any of it. What's the difference between Mar I'm not gonna look it up? And it's so for the time especially, it was so weird and so goddamn funny. 14 inches away, there was a big hip-hop party going on. I don't know how he gets that access to the BBC archive. Because there's they know something crazy is going to happen and they're going to need to go throughout the neighborhood, he go or she goes, your body cam on? And and she's probably doing better than some of those other families, I'm guessing, but like her options are not the same as a single angry woman with a gun who hates kids.
Some yeah, just something that could give me an ounce of like that's my fucking thing is context and empathy. Right next to a police station. That's the first time she pulls out the I've been assaulted and I was. a community was like at a given time and what enables you to conduct yourself in a certain way, to think in a certain way. She's got a new trespassing sign on her on her on her sliding door. Oh, okay. This is from a website called Fives. So to get any kind of locomotion, Uncle Jack's gonna have to really put his back into it. But I've I wanted to narc people out. challenge out of the way. I mean and there's an there's an example, there's a story I've talked about a lot 'cause it's really it's stuck in my memory for a pretty long time.
And uh the that they you vote with your feet when you have that kind of independence and like uh I'm not sure what my point is about this, but wait, what was I talking about? The d uh was it like a pr presence as in literally going out uh hoods full of or I can't speak to that, but uh I mean they And it's like I I'm not trying to minimize it, but I am saying like just because you've seen Malcolm X and are very woke as a person in their twenties or thirties, what you you what you don't know is what Light back top where he's like, you know, I'm gonna tell you I'm gonna tell you I'm gonna put this I'm gonna put this very plainly and if you fucking say anything about it are are like god they they know the drill they know that the angry white lady who is not as unhinged as I thought she would be she's just I'm curious about it.
And now now later now in the later years of the 70s, after these had been completely discontinued for reasons that will become apparent, America was in love with a game called Jarts. So when each three through horseshoes you get different points. The problem is you buy a Chinatown shirt and you want to buy another one again an hour later. What do you mean by that? I think that's really wise though, don't you think? hospitality uh uh staff uh and that they're you know I haven't listened to this episode, but uh they're i when you're working in hospitality, um kind of like how we've talked about No, dang it. Well, 'cause people kept breaking body parts and and getting spinal injuries. Anyway, Chinatown, I can't find the logo just now, but uh it's a it's it's in the Qingchong Bing Bong typeface.
And there were rules. It's none of my fucking business. The various words, the R word, the N word, the B word, the F word, A S S. Oh I missed that part. The guy the guy on the driveway, just point of information, the guy on the driveway talking about Izzy and the dog, I really liked. It makes a lot of difference. But what I am saying is like people who are a little bit older than you, by a couple years, well, by several years anyway, a couple years before you were born, David, uh was it David Dukes? BF skinners. Non-television, they're not falling over drunk in the funniest best accents you've ever heard. I'm gonna say over 60% of the movie is footage from police body cams. Oh, Florida, but I forget where I think it's near Ocala.
But the but you can see through and here's the beauty part is they've got coverage. I mean like we've got things here where like these people run around in high visibility dress uh vests and they're like a community ambassadors or whatever and you If you have the resource, we went to my kids' track meet two days ago across country and you can tell the school my kid goes to is a public school. Um do you like um do you like Jesse Plemens? Um uh yeah, yeah, no, uh I'm not really sure how crumbles get made. Oh, then you won't know what this means. Yeah. She's not an old lady from Toledo. Well you remember or m maybe remember my character uh the ha excuse me, character Martha? Yes. Right. Um one is that the the the practical uh thing for people who play tennis is that those courts are now being used for pickleball and that frustrates people who want to go play tennis.
I'm gonna go watch it immediately. Yeah, yeah. Especially men who would not listen to just this random kid they were talking to, and then I was like, I'm s And also to to deal with the uh cotwhat did Broderick say. What? I mean um um I th I feel like uh they're not exactly I I said like Drake's cakes, but it could be little Debbie's basically it's any kind of like a coffee cake where you get crumbles on top. It's a tradition to talk about what you've had for breakfast. It's the sugar that's nice. And it was an African American family living next door to us. And I can yes, and I can also be uh uh I can also be made uncomfortable about how that footage was And so yes, uh honestly, a good uh like microcosm a teensy tiny example of this of how people experience it in the suburbs, I think, is weapons, because that's a And the way that these kids call her a Karen, like white people have taken Karen to mean that like a funny Yeah.
Or I shouldn't say I I mean m um conducting pogroms on black people Yeah, no I I don't think it was like a Malcolm X type It's how it kinda felt. So at one point the cops gotta go out and talk to her. And you g I think you got something here. Imagine it being like a wiley coyote thing like and you see how you know you've done good. I'm almost there. I see. Whoa! And then finally number five. No, really? It looks fun. No, on yeah, honestly no. I'll have you I'll have you put into some kind of institution, young man. You know how I never say evil? Like somebody who was parked in my, I assume, parking area or business area and like the a fence it closed off the fence. Yeah. It's really bad. So I am at synthshirts.
Is this like red bubble for cities? But there's two things that I think makes that make this quite distinctive. So she she's going, I'm not coming out. Just talk about it. What you're looking at here, uh, and this is will probably be show art, is the a really, really cool and game for children. At this point they're commiserating with the locals about it. Like going toward Middletown where JD's from, like you even when you're out of town, you will see barns with Confederate flags on them. No. What if you just paired sauce? Kmart. Remember the woman says something as indecorus says which of these kids are yours? They can also say that you have to talk to them, which is That's why that scene was to me the most fascinating in the movie.
Because, at least according to what I w learned at the time, a lot of kids were being injured and perishing because The channel Okay, just please m don't make a noise for a minute. Oh, he's got a plan. It's a real Angel Allen type situation. She's not us. That's and I've I've fallen out of uh uh fallen out of fashion. I smell the blood in my voice. I just Hello everybody, I'm JJ Crumbletops, and I want these children to not be playing in the next yard Were there any, you know, to the tonight at ten type stories? Oh my god. She defends the use of all the words she uses. Um not just an entire thing. You're doing a bit. Just one fat drunk uncle at the party ruins it for everybody. Now the party is just yellow and gray and there's that pink like I I've never seen Fondant in real life.
It's like it's just little tennis, right? Uh collegiate, hometown spirit, occupation tease, culture. But it is when the When the black guy starts laughing about how there's no way there's no there's no way the Izzy could pick up that dog. Yeah, it goes back to the 60s. And it is right at where Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana meet. And remember, File Draw Effect, they can present anything and evidence that they feel like. And I just want to say I want I want to God I'm about to steal a joke. I can't get you out of my head. Or put slightly differently, you give a very serious reason for why you had to do something. Confederate flags in Indiana. And Nick you can say stuff like, for example, and you've seen this in in on TV shows.
Oh I'm sorry, what's her name? I just need to let you know I'm gonna get that guy. Scary. That's so funny! Like intentionally the crumbles. And this was a situation where over and over and over again I'm not saying that that would have fixed anything, but how they just I use my white woman's voice. A bad mad movie or a movie you're kind of mad about? Is that I'm sorry, let me just let let's let's pop the stack here. What I do know is she sticks out like a sore thumb. I think it's right in front of you. And I I thought about um a recent, I think the last Roderick on the line episode you did, uh where he He was Oh, um, I know, Killers is Killers of the Flower Moon, which I've neither read nor watched, but my kid has both read and watched.
Longjong Silver's Dripper Hut. Well give me an ex uh example. Um I think a lot of things are a conveyance for salt. Do you like butter a little bit? Wow. And you and you th you take you take it in turns to throw your jart and lob it in the air and try and land it inside. That's one of her terms. Yeah, but I mean it comes from Hillary Clinton. She tries to do a lot of little tricks to like use language and different kinds of things to like assert power in in the situation. I'm gonna be so rich with my new chain called Crumble Tops. Why is Erl the JavaScript trying to hurt me? And do you get my back on what a cool like mid to late 60s box this is You've never called the cops on somebody who was annoying.
And you know, whether you tell that story well or accurately or not is perhaps a separate matter. Sorry. That's why a lot of American law enforcement exists. You don't like to say that to somebody you love, but I I love myself and I fucking I saw myself all over that woman You ask for l l you um you're talking about like a coffee cake And and just because, well, I don't want to I don't want to oversell it, but you know, I am I am not a serial entrepreneur. Do you ever interact with lard? No, it's a lot like Kmart. Oh yes, me many times. You can tell that a lot of these people have sorry, what's SLR? Mm-hmm. It wasn't good cop, bad cop. And that's when it the sh you right? The guy who eats the apples, that one cop.
That's what's that? And then there's that wonderful scene in the I w I wanna say the first season of Mad Men where Sally and her brother are playing and dressing up and she's dressed h her her brother up in a in a So you I trauma zone is fucking amazing. But anyway, uh I think that's part of what I saw in myself. You got a girlfriend? I mean that's I don't want to say that's an obvious words to put it in your mouth. They can claim people said things. Like that's not what the job is. She's like, I hate this woman so much. What did you have for breakfast if you want to do that? But but this is where America, I think, arguably reached its uh its its zenith. Oh fuck me. And then some of them seemed like they just wanted to be liked.
Oh no, there's one where you get when she'd said yeah, and so I I called 'em I'm not gonna say the word, but like yeah, yeah. If it ever made a difference, I don't think it's making a difference now. You can see you can see the modes are slightly starting to shift because now he's going into mode two. Yeah, they're really freaks me the fuck out. Madeline got fucking Madeline gets very she gets mad. We watched Alone. Just just hello. It's called Five Ideas I've Had for Family Theme Restaurants. Yeah, that's right. And I did immediately watch it after we stopped reporting. And something I said to my wife, you can tell how many for through a variety of rate reasons, all the way from what DSLR you bring.
You think of that as a a deep south phenomenon, maybe like an Alabama thing, right? That is their job. Mouthmeat Mells. I can't literally can't feel my legs. Yeah, but I'm trying to avoid you can't use you can't use the word definition in the definition of the word definition. Oh yeah, um was it like like a average cop insufferable cop? You have the cinnamon the cinnamon makes the sugar taste nice, is what cinnamon really does. Butterworth, old-fashioned dairy fun shack. Yeah. There's this company that makes all this great fake vintage stuff for different towns. It I was looking uh up uh like stuff about this this story, just making sure that like I'm gonna let me do this because I think I don't know if this is right, but it's really clever.
This isn't really explained and I couldn't find more information about it. Like I had to call the cops on that kid because my baby was and like I could say that to a cop and as a white guy in his forties, I n they would be sympathetic to that, more so to me than an underaged kid having an underaged kid party. She's an old lady from Cincinnati. And a lot of what she does in these exchanges is to gently using some really honestly some psycho um not psycho, but like um using some That's such a good melee. The number five is the one I think it's really I can retire on. It's a it's a real uh real real creative moment for y'all. I'm killing time. The way that these cars are designed, in the case of the Corvair, if it gets rear-ended, there's a chance it could, I think, explode or at least catch on fire.
Yes. Yeah. If you can't control the slip, like that was the problem with most off-brand slipping slides when I was a kid. So what you do is you get these little fake plastic hula hoop things you put on the ground and uh like a cornhole Please do, because in the after show I actually said never heard anything about this movie, just no And probably a little bit so you know you've seen you've seen people on the streets who were like all bloody. Carol? I smell the blood in my voice, especially the blood in my voice. I wouldn't put it that way, but I'm happy to do the challenge. And it made me so fucking mad because I went over to be really nice and polite about it. Oh wait, no no I Most adults talk to kids like they're idiots, let alone a cop.
I'm in my nightgown. That that is, at least in my readings of it, kind of can I think that's considered one of the But the other one is also apparently the noise the pickleball makes is particularly noisome to people who live nearby in a way that the pock pop of tennis doesn't. And so we would have to listen to somebody perform this like Steve Reich piece in front of our house for twenty five minutes and then we'll go out there and there's just all this these pools of They don't get I mean, I'm not defending cops, but they don't get to pick that role. It goes back. I think this one's about the uh truck. Didn't didn't Toon Yards do uh the is it's 99 PI? Exactly. I had a girlfriend who used to just refer to them as fried fried.
It's like lard, I think. That's Johnny Bag of Glass. Kind of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of Well, if you look at the cops know the the uh I'm not saying it's because of corruption. I think most white people do not know that not only are cops allowed to lie to you, but I would pair sauces. Is it is it did it go did it is it like did is the opening Because you're not gonna get we on there. And and I was, but I remember even at the time being like, you've gotta be kidding me. That's another amazing one. And I and I I prefer to say wicked. I want to be super clear. Hey, if you're stuck in here, everybody knows you just call and I let you out.
Because uh back of the history uh history of law enforcement in America. Yeah, that's all right, it's not it's not critical. Doing alright. I don't need to dig. That's flatware. She brings down the she but she brings down the temperature. And if you don't know those distinctions, that's okay. W. There are more people who should know better, that's for damn sure. But another uh yeah but it was another example of none of these people are um I'm relieved. Because if you're talking to a cop, it's already too late.
Is it Carol? I think we watched it Oh, you know, I can tell you we watched it last Wednesday because Billy was at a a thing. I I'm gonna make a guess. I really recommend it. Like, you know, we can talk about The Wire in Haha, and it was this great show. It's like in adolescence where like they gotta call in the the nurse to come in early and she's pissed off. Oh boy. Whether or not that's true, whether or not you notice how rarely any of those black and brown people I was told that no one was supposed to be in the area. It's called Chinatown. Because I watched that movie and kept thinking I have been the Karen in this story and I hate myself.
Oh what's the c is? But uh there's a lot of fac it it I it's not that I haven't wanted to, like which I think is a very different thing. Yeah. This is even better. I like trying different textures. It's not NAM. I imagine you thought the same thing I did. Yeah. That's just what we have recordings of in that instance. Griffith. But on November 13th, 2006, I did put some very positive energy out into the world by saying five ideas I've had for family themed restaurants. Wow. I've If it helps, sure. And once you have done that, they're going to do everything in their power to make you look bad as a result of that. Blah blah blah blah. We're gonna put you in a lineup. And so that's that's how we know well apart from also ruining the most consequential election of our lives, that's how we all know Ralph Nader. So there was the seventies were like when people and no let alone all the Watergate and CIA stuff that was coming out We're like, okay, guess what? So in charts you get points for sticking into the ground sticking into the ground inside the circle. And the reason I found this movie so compelling, in addition to how it was made, is because I see so much of what I hate about myself and that woman There's a reason lots of people have watched that, because in the same way as learning about jury nullification is a really good thing to know about.
I'm just thinking about these modes where she's like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, sorry, sorry, sorry. Well, here's several things that prove you didn't do it, and here's one thing that we think proves you did do it. It's it's really good. Uh yeah, actually no, that's where yeah, yeah. I think I've seen everything he's done. But they are on the continuum of the great American spectrum. No, no, it's really hard. One word, Chinatown. You know? Like just just tell me what's in uh the conference. And the cop's in mode one where he's like, okay, uh, well, blah blah, I just need to be able to, you know, blah dah da.
And then there's that that twist to like, well, would it surprise you to know that we've got some video of this. Have you ever found yourself coming up with like you kind of like straighten up your back and you you know get very serious and you give a very serious reason. You are in a kind of job that requires you to do shit. How are you? That's how he he got me a lot of cool stuff. And like, oh no, no, we know this lady. Oh my god. She uses her emotions to chide people for asking her to behave in a more civil way. And I just I I was saying to Mad and Billy, like I wasn't sure what I expected him to be like, but I really like how he is.
