This is Do by Friday, a weekly challenge podcast with Alex Cox. And Merlin Mann. This week's challenge, step into the Criterion Closet. Hello, good after morning, Merlin Man. How are you? Uh, I'm fine, Alex, how are you? I am alright. I've had a great morning. Oh good. You're just you're just funny. I just you're you're you know you're how you are. And that's a delight Oh thank you. Oh I forgot to tell you you're dying. I'm dying? Yes, and we're all talking about it. So um we're we're all gonna be a lot nicer to you now. Okay, good. That's good to know. You'll find out more later. Well, probably. All right. Might be too late. What what so you had a good morning? Did you did you sleep well? You're dying.

You're dying. But uh do you sleep well? Uh wait. Aren't we all dying? So is this something where we should all be nice or each other? Oh yeah. This a trap? I think I'm in a trap. We don't say that anymore. That's funny. That is that is funny. So so what what all happened? She slipped okay, I'm guessing? I did. I fell asleep watching my favorite Criterion disc last night. Uh I didn't sleep very long, but I uh I'm not worried about that. I slept okay. I'm up. I got a lot done. Did did you get anything accomplished? Anything you're excited about you got accomplished this morning? You know, I I didn't. And maybe that's why I had a good morning. I just Oh yeah. That's a that's a good John Melanie bit.

When he says, yeah, like little kids are like, Oh, we didn't get to do anything this weekend. When you're an adult, you're like, What what did you do this weekend? You're like, I It didn't do anything. It was great. Um I'm not sure. I subscribe to the theory of uh, you know. Junior where he says like sleep sleep is bor it's boring. So I I think I got good sleep, but only three hours maybe. And uh Uh apparently tur turns out, based on an ad Atlantic article and a fresh air episode I listened to, you only need uh Three to eight hours of sleep. It's based on everyone's bodies. You only need three to eight hours of sleep. Yep, is that why I'm dying? I'm just that could that could be made even stupider by saying you only need one to sixteen hours of sleep.

Yep, yep, but I'd probably Yeah. If if the person had this voice and was nice enough to me, I would be like, sure. Do you have any colloidal silver for me? I want to be a little bit more than a little bit. Well it reminds me of those um Those ads you see, you know, if you if you see uh commercials, you know, for for pharmaceuticals and they say something like there's this there's this thing and you you give yourself a shot in your tummy and then that makes you lose weight. And and people on this drug have lost up to 46 pounds. And I I kind of feel like when they do that, I feel like the way they should say that is you can take this drug and there's no way you'll lose more than 46 pounds. Because that's what they probably mean.

You know what I mean? I I have uh two, if they say up to, well, okay, but here You say, well, every what you really need is three to eight hours of sleep. And I don't know if that's an exact quote, but you know well, eight hours is I think kind of ordinarily what people think of as the amount of sleep they need and don't get. Three seems low. Three to eight would seem to cover, I'm guessing, probably ninety percent of the bell curve for most sleepers. Yeah, eight eight hours is the sweet spot of Well depends on the person. Eight hours is the guilt number for me. I w always want eight hours. And if My app doesn't say eight hours, I feel like a failure. We've talked about how that's not a good idea Meditation isn't about relaxing, it doesn't matter.

Eight hour eight eight is a failure number. And I'm I I done eight is a failure number 'cause you feel like you slept too much when you get that or you feel guilty that you slept that much Uh no, it it it's that I have n I have not gotten that number. Oh my god. It's you know, I w I Mm Brian Reganing, like say say eight, say eight. Eight is just it's c it's cursed. It's like the cursed thread of sleep. I can ask I can uh you don't know. No, I don't. That can be difficult. I don't need to know. Um that can be difficult to uh I know. That can be difficult to undo our thinking about those kinds of things. You know what I mean? 'Cause I think I don't know, I it's my you know, one of my beliefs, uh, personally is that I can handle almost anything except slight inconvenience.

And realizing that has made me, I think, understand life a little bit better and how I get impatient sometimes because really I'm constantly trying to avoid inconvenience is is uh is something I've realized about myself. I think similar thing here is like you gotta I don't know. You you gotta I don't know, you gotta you gotta take a long view on sleep, you know? The th th for me anyway, I'm sorry you didn't ask for advice, but like I always feel like y you just gotta say, hey, it's okay, buddy, you'll get it next time. And if you don't, that's okay too. Yeah, and you don't need colloidal silver, even though I kind of Why do you keep talking about colloidal silver? Uh because I just keep thinking about how If someone says something nice enough to me, I think maybe this is what brings me into a cult.

Maybe me dying. What did somebody suggest colloidal silver recently? Uh oh no, just um uh mother g Mother God, you know, the the blue corpse from the HBO documentary, I think about once a week, often when I'm trying to fall asleep. Okay. Um and put some Christmas lights around yourself like they did with her corpse. I mean what's what's the harm in it other than the cost of the other thing. She's God, dude. She's dead. She's dead, dude. That's a really good point. You could desecrate a grave, you could desecrate a Bible, you could desecrate all kinds of holy texts and holy relics. But a body, unless that body's a Bible. Or or uh or m well what if you got got a t you know what? I'm not gonna I'm not gonna get involved with it.

Um, the the hat man. So uh hey everybody. Um This is just the thing I do now. Okay Hi. What's the thing you uh do I've just you know I'm working on a lot of personal uh I'm working on some bits that I can use as personal resets w and things are falling apart. All right. So I feel pretty good about that. Alright. So things are f Oh yeah, I'm great. I watched I watched that Aric what's his name video on create uh this criterion video this morning um I I refilled all my bird feeders I cleaned my bird feeders and refilled them uh I did the dishes and then I did more of the dishes. The dishes, the dishes, as Jeff Rosenstock says. Um I I got a lot done. I feel pretty good. I printed out a new picture frame I like.

Um Yeah, it was good. I'm satisfied, but I'm really it's all just buildup to being with you. You're you're my Wednesday. Mmm. I'm I mean I'm very, very privileged to be a part of your Wednesday and now your dishes Wednesday. It seem y you just sounded very enthusiastic about the dishes. That's not a point of stress for you. Dishes. I just Get me started. There's so many levels. There's so many levels to the dishes. So many levels. How about I can can I have at least two? Did do I earn two? Yeah, I I could I could I could give a fuck what any condition of the house is. I just don't care. It nothing bothers me. And that's a problem. So like I need to like align the way I see the house with the way normal people see the house.

So like the problem is Like I'm from hoarders. Like the the house could be wrecked and I would just be like, Oh, that's okay. We'll just m move that. We've still got paths, like everything is fine. Whereas people other people in the house are like, oh my gosh, there's a lot of stuff accumulating on that table. And the kind of stuff I never notice. So I try to make a point. I do all the dishes before I go to bed. And I get up in the morning and the little lord has made his meals for the day and like the entire kit kitchen. I wake up and it's just wrecked. I'm like, mmm. But I'm not gonna bug him about it because he's making his own lunch. And that's more important than me feeling like I'm kind of sick of putting the air fryer away.

An air fryer lunch. That's quite that's quite fancy. Well he's I I don't talk about my kid anymore, but he makes his entire he makes all of his lunches for the week on Sunday. He he roasts vegetables for the week. He makes he makes an entire and he puts them in little dishes in in the in the um in the fridge. And he takes that to work at his two jobs. And I'm I'm talking about m movie discs today. Which is important. Oh, I'm super excited. No, no, no. But I mean like, you know, everything's contextual. You gotta take it all in context, you know. I know what I do is valuable. Very few other people do. And I I I I can't really bank on other people thinking what I do is valuable. So instead I try to demonstrate value in in a way that anybody in the seduction community would.

I try to show value. I demonstrate value to the people in my family. All right. How many people would it how would someone convince you that you have value or would it have to be a group of people it's really not a question about dishes. I know well you didn't even give me one level of dishes. All I got was information about an air fryer. Watch that video I sent you um I sent you my template I made or found or made a long time ago for fake criterion um covers. This is not something I should have. I'm I shouldn't have it. Just open it up and use it. Oh no, I oh I already go do other stuff. Okay. All right. Yeah. I did I did one a long time ago that I could not find. Um I saw an interview with Amy Sederis one time.

Where she talked about the origin of Strangers with Candy. Do you know this story? No. Um, let me see if I can find this real quick. So like in a similar way to perhaps um you know uh John again John Mullaney and JJ Bittenbinder. Like that misty watercolored memory of the man with the mustache and the cowboy hat who would come and talk about child abduction at nine in the morning at his elementary school. Go have fun, go be kids. Let you know, but it has an impact on you. Um a thing that made an impact on Amy Sidaris is a 1970 short film, an anti-drug PSA. called the trip back. And can I encourage you please to go Google the Trip Back and look at what that so are you familiar with what Amy Sidaris looks like on Strangers with Candy?

Yes. Please. And this is a woman who gets out there and talks about I don't think she says she was a loser, a user, and a boozer. But but she uh but she d s basically talks like that. She talks in those kind of like ex-druggy aphorisms. And you can see this picture of her doing her talk with the microphones and smoking a butt, and you see how much she looks like Amy Sidera's character. Is this a Oh yep, this is a documentary. It's a PSA kind of like it's a cheesy anti-drug movie, but Yeah, I made a criterion edition of the of the trip back. I can't find it now, but I I like this, especially because I It's called The Trip Back, and I know not I I I don't know, but uh that's not a Linda trip reference, right?

She was only in nineteen seventy Uh yep I don't know time. What was it 75 that nope nope she was Monica Lewin? Yep. Okay. Yep. I don't know American history. That's good for the show. Um I think you can probably find it on YouTube if you want to see it Oh yep. I was a user, a loser, and a boozer. I stole the TV. I love that hub camp. Jerry Blank can't read. Oh, I d I feel like I should have known that this is what inspired Strangers with Candy. Why would you know that? Because Because it's an important movie and it's an important movie uh for Chicago and if I don't know how would you do when Why would I know what's an important movie for Chicago? Because uh Stephen Colbert and Amy S I I don't know about the Oh oh 'cause the second city or whatever.

Yeah he's so good. Stephen Colbert is so good on that show. And um and the other guy. The the art guy, Paul Danello or whatever. He's so great. Yes. Yes. Oh look at him. Yeah. Um, so uh so that's that's all that's all been good. You know you gotta go easy on yourself, kid. Uh I'm I will try. I no, you probably won't. I do love my computers. And now you got a way to make fake uh fake covers for things. I do. I tried to put my t-shirt on it and it doesn't look good. Okay. Um did you um did you want to talk about the uh do you want to go straight to the challenge? Yes. Pew, pew, pew. I decided that this challenge doesn't make any sense. Alrighty. But but we're gonna try and make it make sense. And the challenge is to What was the exact challenge?

Uh go in the criterion closet closet or something like that, right? Pick your colour. So I can see the criterion closet videos on YouTube. And if you don't know what we're talking about There's these videos, there's a wonderful thing they do where people go and visit Criterion, I guess, and they've got this little room with I suppose supposedly all or almost all of the Criterion discs in it. And you get to go in there and it's mainly, you know, the idea is, hey, you visited the office, get some free movies. But then you kind of like hold it up and you talk about you hold up an Ozu movie and talk about it. And it's always amazing movie. It's I don't know if you've ever seen Tokyo's story, but it's a very important movie.

No, I didn't. Well you need to name check it if you're going in the closet, bitch. You can well, that's why some of the criterion closet picks are better than others. It's it's gone viral And now it it's like a point of uh honor and relevancy. It's a it's a lot of pressure to put on somebody to go and perform and do that though. And you're right, some are better than others. We I know we both love the Natasha Leon one. There's lots of really, really good ones. And there's some that are just like, you know, you know, it's white nice though. Like the DeCavit one is kind of sweet. You know, there's there's lots of ones where you like, it's just interesting to hear people talk about what they like.

It it is it because you can tell when someone's not doing not doing a bit. Okay. Which is why the don't you think some of them are kind of doing a bit? Then that's kind of a disappointment. Well, I mean uh that's why I say it's a lot of pressure. Like if I don't know why I would ever be wherever that up LA, I guess. I don't know why I would be where Criterion is and I don't know why they would let me go in the closet, but if they said, hey You ever seen Criterion Closet? And I'd be like, yeah, I really enjoy it. And they would say, Okay, we'll go nuts, we're gonna shoot it. And like, I don't know. I I would pick a lot of ones I already have. Or, you know what honestly like you know what I mean?

Like to talk about, 'cause that's the ones I bought were the ones that, you know, really matter to me. But yes. But how did you um how did you think about this challenge, Alex? I just thought about if I was to do this little publicity su stunt where now it's actually in a truck. They put the closet in a truck and drive it It's become a headline, I suppose. Um but I'm okay. You are so broken. I am not broken. I am going with this bit where I apparently look at headlines even though Well, I mean I don't know I can't prove that you look at headlines, but headlines are almost all you talk about. No. W what's the last headline I talked about? Why what see you you you've decided at some point that this kind of test is meaningful and it's really not a test?

It's a cool thing. Well no, because you do you're doing the opposite of what would make that a useful test, where you'll say stuff like when's the last time when's when did I mention blah? And I'm like, oh yeah. Let me use my encyclopedic knowledge of every time you've compulsively said the same thing over and over to prove to you how many times you said this. And just I can assure you, you do that. You do that. And it's it's nice. People I think people enjoy that. I uh I I I if I might make up uh my own headlines that Oh okay. Is that anything you read about recently? No. No. No. I saw a documentary about or uh heard a documentary about it. No. I don't I don't know who they Oh the the mysterious umbrella man um at uh Indile Plaza.

When Kennedy was shot? Aww. Oh. Oh, y is he is this guy i part of the Oliver Stone movie or no? No. Hmm. Something like that. Yeah. Did I as well do it? See, I'm Anyway, sorry I misspoke. Um I realize you hardly look at the internet and are very unaware of what's happening in the discourse and it's not affecting you in a negative way. So I withdraw the remark and I'm glad you're doing well. I hope I'm You seem happy. Seems like it's making you happy. Oh I was happy until now. So would you just like I was happy about my criterion and happy thinking about shit. I'm fucking pumping you up. So So so so what excited you about this? Because I haven't thought for a while what I value in uh cl quote classic movies and I don't necessarily like that word, but classic is At least f for me has been a little bit more than a lot of people.

And then Janice, I guess I never knew this. I thought it was the other way around, but j I guess Janice bought Criterion Collection. Yeah. I hadn't I hadn't known that. It has this weird, interesting hi history where I yeah, I thought it was just this is where we keep the um I I did not wasn't sure if we were going to watch Well I'll put it I'll put it in the show notes. It's um Arik um Devers, I want to say. But anyway, he's a really nice guy. I met him at that conference. He spoke Right before something that my me and my people were doing. And I really enjoyed watching that talk. And I I learned a lot from it. Um just before I was quite as testicle deep in the criterion world. Um but he basically does this wonderful talk about the design.

How do you put it You should just watch it, it's like 15 minutes. It's really short and it's very well done. And he just talks about like he he gets all the criterion discs and he's very interested, but he talks about like how they do the design and like how the how why the numbering matters And why you would want to buy a DVD as well as a Blu-ray in separate packages and just the kind of thing that's sounds fancy to talk about in the abstract, but When we all talk about things like how we enjoy delight in the world of Apple Apple products, have enjoyed that. I mean it's kind of a similar thing. It's just the The fit and finish, the design, everything about the criterion, and here we're talking this several different criterion things, which is part of what made this challenge stupid.

I mean, there's criterion, like that's a company. There's the criterion collection, which is a very specific thing that means it's a movie where like it's often a restoration or a a some kind of a special re-release, a better print than you know, that's how you get in the Criterion collection, I think. But like I does that mean like everything Criterion has ever put out? I guess. Um But just that if you're I mean there's something this he did that talk in 2015 and a lot of what he said is still super true, you know, where it's like you know stuff just disappears from streaming. I can't my family disagrees about this, I think. And it doesn't matter, but of all the numerous ways that my senses have gotten really dull.

I see a really big difference between the image quality given different ways of watching something. Like the stuff I've got on my Plex, I will always favor 4K over 1080. I will always favor 1080 over 720 all the way down. That's in my cascade of like preferences is like try to get the highest quality. Um but you know that's fine. I know that's a trade-off, but Jesus Christ. Watching The Walking Dead on Netflix is rough. Like it's so noisy. And not in like a godfather way. And I'm telling you, man, when you drop in a a 4K Blu-ray and and watch it like right off the disc to your TV, it makes a really big difference, especially if it's something that's been brought to, you know, UHD, where it's really got a pop in contrast and stuff like that.

It it it's a really big difference from Jesus Christ. Look, okay, so like one of my movies that I have a criterion disc for is Eight and a Half, which is one of my favorite movies because I'm basic. The previous DVD that I had of eight and a half from probably the mid to early 2000s, woof. The print on it was so bad. It looked like it had been dragged around on the floor. It just, you know what I mean? Like D you know, just because it's on DVD, well, that means it's a bit by bit perfect version of something that didn't look very good in the analog version. The most upsetting part of this challenge for for me was revisiting some of my DVDs thinking, hey, this is a special thing I have and just being, oh, like if it looks better on TV.

Uh drive and then I also have a drive- Drive on DVD, whoa, okay. Yes. And then I have a drive Blu-ray, which also though is not very good. And uh I did some uh uh b extra credit for this which is I started looking at my collection I d uh quote collection and downloads of of uh movies I have in HD because I can't get it anywhere else or the internet connection is not conducive to the 4K lifestyle No, but if you uh stay at the library or at McDonald's long enough, you can get one 8K uh four K to eight K who eight K's that's rough. Uh one four K m movie. But that's probably overkill unless you have like a really big TV. I have a four Fifty. Yeah, but no, I'm just I'm just saying like, you know. And it's it's just it's again though, this is the problem where like I'm probably putting this in a really dumb way, but I could tape something like off of a boom box with the condenser mic.

and onto like a cassette. And then I could get that cassette into a completely lossless format. Or like it could be a wave or it could be. Whatever it could tell it could be flack or Aug Vorbis or whatever. The thing is though, if it sounded like it's sort of like live recordings a lot of time, like if it sounds like shit It doesn't matter that it's the most pristine quality in the world. If you didn't get a good recording, or in the case of music, it could be like a weird master. You know, um, and it this has all gotten so complicated now, especially in the age of like for people who are fans of this stuff, like I've got three copies of Kingdom of Heaven now. And it's like, you know, well, I don't want to watch the one that's not the director's cut because it apparently is is just terrible.

I mean, how many versions of Alien do I have? How many versions of Star Wars do I have? And thank God, Plex now. has an ability to have what's called an addition. So you can say director's cut or you know, or whatever. But you know, that's the problem is I mean, like it sounds silly to say, but just just just tossing out a phrase like D V D or Blu-ray It's only as meaningful as how good the original, the transfer, the the all of that stuff is. And in the case of the movie I was watching last night, it's Citizen Kane. Just that's an absolutely extraordinary looking movie in what they've what they've done with that. And it makes such a big difference if you came up watching crappy stuff on PBS or VHS or like whatever to go back and like see what the third man can actually look like in a good print is it's a different movie.

I've told you m my uh citizen cane story, right? If you have, I'd love to hear it again. It I actively avoided it because I thought it was basic. I had seen scenes of it just, you know, it was like a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little And that's me and Bite w well now it's called Bicycle Thieves. What they used to call the Bicycle Thief. I was just so tired of hearing about that movie as a kid. Like I I I still haven't watched it just be uh not because I'm mad, but 'cause it's apparently a a wonderful movie, but you know, Italian realist movie from the fifties. So But like I just got so tired of hearing about it as a kid.

In the same way as like when I tell people they should watch the wire. It makes you resistant. It was. It was yes. It all of the people who were just so horny for it I didn't like. And even though m one of my profound weird what they literally All the people were ho all the people who were horny for it, you didn't like In y well as teenagers and uh twenties. Who fucked like Citizen Kane? That's weird. It well okay. So that's that's the thing. When Someone not not someone with a an entire group of people who are pretentious dicks don't uh r really like something, I tend a lot of people I think tend to go, uh but I'm gonna be a little bit more than a little bit. Like, you know, like an like a crazy example, Andy Warhol movies where like you could name check that you've seen the Empire State Building movie.

And it's like, but yeah, did you really like did you really watch like a multi multi hour movie that's just one camera trained on a building? I know many people have re uh read Infinite Jest. I don't claim to I read I read the Empire State Building book, so I feel like I knew most of what was gonna be in the movie. Oh god Um then I on one of probably like my first day of film school watched sit a a citizen cane print at the it was a little field trip to the music box theater, which is a a classic theater here in Chicago, known for getting really old uh prints like they uh are shipped there they do the operatory company kind of yeah and uh while I w watching it was like, oh holy shit. Oh, this is I get oh okay, yep, yep.

Uh bet pretty much one of the best movies I've ever ever seen. However The sound it wasn't bad, but it just was it was. Do you remember I don't you know if you remember if I told you that we went to see did I tell you like Billy had never seen you should see read Billy's review of it. It's wonderful. But we there was a showing of Harold and Maud at a local little theater that's that we like a lot. And um But what I didn't know going into it was it was like, oh my gosh, you gotta come in, you gotta see this, this, this print of Harold Maud. It's like it was like a it's like an original print. I don't want to say like a sixteen millimeter print or something. It looked like dog shit. It was I mean, it was so damaged.

It was so fucked up. And I was fun it was fun and I enjoyed the experience and I was very happy that my kid you know, had a good experience with it, but like, you know, do you do you own so good? Oh hold hold then like a w a week hold on a week later I saw I saw uh the original criterion, and not the most current one, but a uh 4K edition. of Citizen Kane fully remixed in a s small theater in that hell of a holy fucking shit and it's not like it was a bad movie or anything before, but That's when you kind of get, okay, it's not just a movie that broke uh conventions and uh Yeah. Well hey, well my question is do you do you own the one that I have? If you get a drop box you can see the the wonderful edition I've got Um, I thought about this last night and it's a no-brainer.

If you would allow it, I would be honored if you would let me gift you with the criterion 4K of uh of Citizen Kang because It's got the Roger Ebert commentary. Oh yes, yes, please. It's vital. It's vital to watch. Once you've watched the movie, it's so vital to watch the ro that's what I was watching last night. I just ha I just fell asleep watching Citizen Kane halfway through with um uh his commentary which is well to to quote arik um his name looks like aric with an a R I K Arik. To quote Arik it's it's film school in a box in some ways. Like learning about what Greg Tolin did in that movie is um mind boggling. And just to have to sit there and watch a movie with Roger Eber, a w a movie that he treasures and like be able to tell you like every little nook and cranny of what's happening in a scene.

And like you notice there you can see the footlight and it You notice that at this point the ceiling in in the they use that newspaper building room for three different things. They use it for you You know, th they're they'd be only used so many sets. Then but just to learn like how they shot things on the budget they had to look huge um is incredible. The makeup, nineteen forty one. The makeup on him is He's twenty like twenty-five, twenty-six, something like that. He looks it's incredible. So I would love to descend it just just just so you could have the commentary and we could talk about it So please say yes. And that's why this challenge is uh stupid but also f uh fun because media is death and the Criterion Collection Until I knew that it was much more about the the restoration.

I it You know, it felt kinda d just like here's something pretty to have on your shelf, which now I also think I totally I totally get that. And I think that is a cromulent way to approach it is like The same way that like honestly like people who buy guitars. How many times have you seen somebody in like an interview on TV and they've got like guitars on the wall in the background and maybe they play them, maybe they don't. They mainly want you to know they like guitars. You could just go out and buy a bunch of these really pretty discs and watch them once and that's fine. You don't have to be. There's no test, you know, for like who deserves. to have these things. And like I said, I sent you a list of mine, the ones I've got.

I I don't have that many, but um there are some that are the the parasite one is outstanding. Uh The there's just a bunch that are real good. They've got lots of stuff on 'em, you know? And I like the I like the way it looks. It makes me happy See, you uh you did the challenge but perfectly. You talked about the few that were um I can see you in the closet right now. Beauti I have a wonderful im imagination. It's it's great. See, I better look flat. The well nil we better look fat nil. I mm I gotta be careful with lighting. I've back I saw a picture of you recently. I'm like, oh that the what a handsome man. And a pretty clean bathroom. I uh no it's not a clean bathroom, but you know I don't care Yeah.

Yeah, a lot of stuff is going to change, Alex. A lot of stuff is going to change. If you go to that, so what I put in this folder for now, just let's see, there's a picture of fake Jerry Blank. your criterion template, and then I put my little main like shelf of plastic. And then I sent you a list sent you a screen grab of mostly mine. Oh, the Raging Bull's beautiful too. Oh my god, the trains, the booklet that comes with the train spotting is so freaking cool. I don't know. They just make me happy and they're pretty they make m me happy as well, but I I think possibly more importantly, it at least from what I know of uh n now looking even looking into the creation of these, it makes the people who are restoring all of these very, very happy and kind of uh as the like, ooh, it streaming is getting r a lot i ickier, not even just the pr pr for the prices, but because the quality is just d dog shit, as you would say.

The like m the the young's I don't know if millennials are mm young, but Uh like people at the company do are y younger and are rediscovering uh films that we watched, like we the w Weekend, which was a movie that premiered on that's a very difficult movie. Weekend? The one with the car crash and waiting in line? No. Weekend is just still. I was thinking of Bunwell or one of the new wave guys. What am I thinking of? Weekend dash and no, it's just an interminable new wave movie directed by was it not Godard? Who did it? Weekend movie. Never mind, but your yours yours yours is a gay, a gay movie. Yes, it is it is Do you like gay movies? I d um other than Blue is the warmest color, which is in the criterion collection.

Um it's an interminably it's it's like uh discreet charm of the bourgeoisie. It's one of those just like pain films that you watch to be cool. But um But wait, what does it say on weekend? Um Oh you know what you need to spend time with Moobie, dude. Moobie's got so much good gay stuff. The I there was uh oh crap crap. Um I have now I really lean into and manipulate the free trial situation. So I've now canceled Criterion and I'm on to Moobie. You're you're one of those churn people I've read about. Yes. I'm I'm I'm a churner. Um and uh they're they're a churner, Jerry, a churner. No churn. What's happening there? Charnin. Churnin, Jerry. Um not a levels person. Charnel. But m my charnel charnel house.

That's a house where you keep bones. Couldn't. No. It's an English language word that is used to modify other nouns. I'm not good with w words. Jerry, not good with words. What's going on with Glenn Maxwell? That's crazy. I d uh so um so if I saw a headline maybe I'd know. I don't uh it i did she say a thing? Is there a a new development? I I I hear what you're saying about, you know, churning from one to the other, but honestly, like I've said this so many times, but like I I don't know. I'm weird where like there's stuff I don't mind spending many money on just because I think it's a cool thing. And a lot of that is people, like people that I spend money on, and I don't even really consume that much of what they do.

And in the case of Criterion, like yeah, it costs money each month, but like I I love it. First of the month, going in and like seeing what's new in their collections. And I j I love the trailers. I love the features. I love the like what that what are that series is called where the where directors talk about their favorite movie and then they interleave it with the movie then. The Ariester one for that is extremely good. And that's how I learned about that Swedish that that that Swedish guy I'm obsessed with was from Ariester. Oh God, he makes my uh oh, actually I was gonna say m um some of my least favorite movies. Some of the best uh I think horror movies. Um I think they are phenomenal. Yep.

So upsetting. Nope. Did not like her to Uh-huh. I uh I hated seeing that in theaters. I had such a visceral because uh no, I thought it it was phenomenal. I just it was a terrible experience It's for me because it it was very uncomfortable. It was i it's kind of like when I watch Stalker. It is a fantastic movie. Oh yeah. And I'm like, oh, uh, cause you're just staring hours to kill, you just sit down and watch stalker. It's very mellow. It's very simple, very easy to understand. Oh, it's totally fine. Totally normal and not Don't get lo don't watch that before bed. Um that that's actually I realized most of the you know what you'd want if you went to that zone? No, I I don't even want to think about it.

What about annihilation? Do you see annihilation? I I actually haven't. No. Billy said the book's better, but um but that's that's got uh like a special area in it. In annihilation. Yeah, you gotta go to like this this area where it's everything's all wavy. A team a team of women go into this special area. Oh god there's There should never be a special area. Even in Harry Potter when there's a special area. Talking about the room of requirement. Uh d m m moving on. Uh I uh ha I I do not have many Criterion film, not for any other reason other than they are uh well no, I have the digital version. What I don't want to talk about special. You want to talk about special what? I don't want to think about special I don't want to think about hereditary or uh stranger which is uh uh stuck.

It follows. Did you ever watch It Follows? That's scary too. Yeah, but that's that's that's alright. I'm I'm fine with that one because there's there's no way I can get into that situation. There's I I can see myself somehow getting into a midsummer situation. There's not that many steps. Everybody's got a plan until they get punched in the sex. That's what Mike Tyson said. Um, tell me some of yours. You you go in the closet. Hey, go in in the closet. Uh hold up an Ozu movie. What what movie you can hold up? Tokyo Story by Ozu? My first c uh cry uh criterion film that I I think probably the reason I found out about uh criterion uh movies at or the like collection itself, the numbered uh uh discs was from A uh I'm I'm gonna flex again and talk about um my work with Kartempkin, which is an old school documentary house.

And they related to Max Kartemkin? No, no, no, no. Uh oh no, I worked there m way better. Because it kind of sounds like Max's last name. Uh uh oh, because Tem Quinn, Cartem Quinn, Oh yeah, Quinn Quinn, yeah, it's actually Car Tem Quinn. Um one of the founders, last name Quinn. Fun not a very fun fact, except for me. Um, but they got kind of on This is still the flux. This this is the flex because they made Hoop Dreams and Steve James, who's a extremely talented documentary filmmaker, like Working with him was extremely influential and uh being an intern there I also got to work on Life Itself, which was the Robert um E uh sorry, Roger Ebert documentary and it passed away when he was working on that.

And that's also the first time I ever saw Yeah y yes, fa famously. Um but at the so at the end of like once you're done working at Cartemquin because you have uh like a uh an internship internship or a fellowship for uh young filmmakers they uh are like okay here here is a closet of our movies Go ahead, take whatever you want. And I didn't know. It's exciting. Yes. And I didn't know that the criterion. And now I was like, wait, wait. Uh uh what? And I went back and criter they had stolen that from Criterion just because it is a tradition among various um ki whether it's like a film company or some production company, a lot of the time if you've worked there for a while, they're like, hey go wild, take hundreds uh or take like a few hundred dollars worth of films, which I think is really wholesome and and nice.

Um but in one of the films I took was who obviously Hoop Dreams and the criteria which Oh it's so it it's it is it heralded like a new Yeah yeah. No I I'm aware of its importance. I've just never I mean it's it's name checked at the beginning of documentary now. Okay. Uh oh that's true, I forgot about that. Um, but that that was my first also my first experience with like uh special F factually good special features and um sorry, I'm not explaining this. Uh uh w like commentary on the film that was bundled uh yeah yeah yeah no I'm not describing this well. Uh what whether not just commentary But like a um to f other filmmakers talking about why this is important and uh w like in a way that is produced really well and isn't just some um random like red carpet like, hey, how did this movie influence you?

Just a really well produced uh thing where other i influential and smart people will talk about why they love something. And that is what then brought me. That's super valuable. Yeah, and so I I have always uh ha had that and then m F for fake was like the third Blu-ray I uh ever got Um and so I I'm these are the the ones I have. Also r and if I was in the closet, still pick F or Fake. Uh if I was in the closet now, I would not pick Rushmore, not because I don't love it, but I would want this is an aspirational uh pr pr this is an aspirational media per uh purchase. The Wes Anderson Criterion collection that's coming out. It's on my wish list. Oh God, it's it uh it's a Fellini one. The Fellini one also has that beautiful cover on it.

I haven't earned it. Like I I I've earned the the uh Wesson Anderson like uh yeah, I I need the Fellini hipster cred to really earn that. Um But what what uh oh and all all that jazz. Uh one of I would have never considered getting all that jazz. Mostly because I d I hadn't s seen it, but uh you're like, no, no, you got you gotta watch all that jazz. And the only way to watch it is through It's not even streaming on the Criterion app, which is wild and really just That right stuff is so complicated. Yeah. And yeah, it's it they even explain uh in a lot of um by sorry, they the criterion company will explain sometimes why something isn't in their collection. and how they're trying to get it in into i into the collection, whether it be rights or whether it be a a tech issue or a like a print or sound, which is also very in interesting.

Um and okay, these are other c a aspirational closet uh picks. I would love Brazil. which beautiful cover. Um Citizen Kane. The others, which I did not know was in the Criterion collection, but I think is an extreme Nicole Kidman movie? Yes. That's a really good movie. It it I watched that on a flyer probably last year and I was really supp surprised at like she's wonderful in that. Yeah, I I think I watched it like on a plane or something. It wasn't uh I I don't know. It was just like uh holy shit. Um Altered States, which I have never seen, but I probably should. And uh the God's. cool. Yes, yeah, yeah. And on its own, not in the big um the the big boy. Um Brazil, yeah, yeah. One's good. Um video uh video drone And uh my my final, like I'd really the the one that I could talk these are old ones that I could probably talk about uh and seem almost smart.

Um, but the most important uh one that I uh I I c I it makes me emotional thinking about this movie being in the Criterion collection and being preserved in some way is Weekend, w which is a twenty eleven film that's just about two men who meet m two single men who meet one weekend. and have a really beautiful short relationship and I I will it's already in a way that feels less pretentious because the m when your budget is that small it y y y you can only fit so much uh uh pr pretension in. And it even though that it's set in the in London, uh it captures an experience very much like an experience that uh many queer people have where there's this whirlwind and you know uh this whirlwind relationship is going to end and it might end in tragedy, um, but it's d worth it.

And I I I don't even think y you know, it's it's not the greatest movie in the world or whatever, but it like for twenty eleven And uh like it it was also hard uh it There weren't a lot of queer movies on Netflix in twenty eleven. Mm-hmm. It it it was just s it were really important to me and uh a lot of my friends at the time, and it uh also was just it it But no, like th there was good digital cameras at the time. Yeah. Uh and watch the tra the trailer for the Criterion Collection and even on uh my phone, like, oh holy shit, holy shit. So that's like my number one Wow. Criterion is actually really, really, really imp important for these l these little ones that You can even see in the upcoming uh or the like their new releases that they have on the website.

Like there's not that many places to get to see um all that jazz. And I don't know, I I have this phenomenon that's mm, I don't know if it's privileged exactly. It's it's probably a little bit waster. But like I where I'm like, man, I would pay just to get the good version of this. You know, and it's it's cool that you can do that with these things and The curation also then kind of builds this trust or credibility. Oh my god, Georgia Hubbley's top top ten. That's so cool. The drummer from Yellow Tango. I was looking at John Carpenter's. Oh she no she she likes discreet charm of the bourgeoisie. I should watch it again. Oh she likes Balthazar. Oh my god. She has such fancy taste. She does like silence of the lambs.

I introduced myself to her and her husband at South by Southwest and they were really nice about it. Oh. Yeah, her and Ira. Ira Give it to me, IRA. Oh, nope, nope. Uh God I even had a quote, god damn it. I had a I I had a Roger Ebert quote. Um Described it uh Roger Eber described Wigan as smart, sensitive, perceptive film with actors well suited to the dialogue. Such a simple sentence fucking huge in 2011. For him like God, tw twenty-one. That meant so, so, so much. Uh and even now, it's fine, it's it's again, it's hard to find a a good uh off the uh it's hard to pirate still or g pirate a good version. Um so I'm very very glad that uh it's being released in the case. Alex I apologize. Can you hear?

Yes. I think one of my devices has started playing the soundtrack from Chicago because I said all that jazz. Hey Google stop. Hey Siri, stop. Hey Google stop. You gotta tell all the robots. Uh alright, those that are. That was weird. Sorry about that. Zita Jones, Rene Zellweger, Tay Diggs Shaw. Playing on Spotify. Oh, I'm glad that she credited all of the the people involved. That was nice. That was that you know what? That's respect. You know you sit through the credits like a gentleman. Yes, exactly. Uh r Renee Zellwigger earned it. Sally Phillips was in uh Bridget Jones' diary. I learned that yesterday. I don't know who that is. Did you watch Veep? Yes. Do you remember Minahakinen? Oh yes.

Well also is on a wonderful season of Taskmaster. She was in two Bridget Jones movies. I didn't know that. These English people they work like hell, man. Uh s sidebar. You uh m most recent I I love your uh starter playlist of uh episodes. Are you okay with the choice? Yeah. Yeah however however, unless you want to w n no no no no no no. You also posted. I you also posted Krabby today. Did you have an adderall? I am not Krabby. I am very excited about I'm crabby about uh non existent headlines and now I really wanna look at what's happening with just Lane Maxwell, but I'm I'm not because I I like it. And she's the only person in the entire prison that has a uniform with tasseled epaulets on it.

She was able to work that out. And she says, I'm the captain. I'm the captain. Okay, okay. I can't hit it. I think it would look a little something like this. 'Cause what's funny is she would be in like one of those orange jumpsuits that says DOC or something on the back, right? But then it would also have those those fruity epaulettes she likes. You know. She likes those cutout outfits too. I so is there a photo of of hers? In the tassels? She's in tassels all the time. Tassels all the time, title. Um tassels all the time. Um oh you Also posted uh the entire season of uh crap, I don't know. The most recent season of Taskmaster. If you're a person who wants continuity M Merlin has picked the right season, I think.

Like, oh my god. So they're all different. They're all special. But this one's I think this one's extra special and I can't tell why. I think Jason and Stevie are very magical. No, there's a lot there's a lot of reasons. It's it's it's because every single one of them in their way is an agent of chaos. Mm-hmm. And I maybe in their in their own way. And they each their like as anyway, I don't want to go on about Test Mester. That's a different show. But um But but thank you for saying that. I I really would like people and I continue to get nice notes from people who were like, well, you know, Maryland was always spamming this or whatever. Well fuck you. Um would be like posting about this and I finally watched it and you know what?

It's good. Like what posting about something you love on Alex. Oh god. Alex, it doesn't help. You're not helping. A lot of shit's gonna change. You guys are gonna get a different Merlin now. A lot of shit's gotta change. Unfortunately it's already happened. You're officially dead inside. I I've m it yeah, it makes me really Yeah. It makes me really No, I'll keep doing stuff like that, but you know, there's some other stuff I've made some pretty important decisions about. I I'm I made I listened to the rest of the rector. I've decided that I've decided that AI is bad and no one should use it. I uh I just uh And that would be what I publicly say for the rest of the summer at least. So just so you know.

I hope that you you It's bad no one should use it. You guys were all right. You guys were all correct. It's bad and no one should use it. It's so Yeah. So I had um I had I haven't I haven't much to add to this. I I still don't exactly 100,000 percent understand exactly what constitutes exactly being in the Criterion collection. I mean, does it mean that they just put it out at some point? Or like uh cause then there's like Creteen additions, which I think is different. But I I didn't have that much to add to it. Um The the the thing that I got caught up stuck on a little bit was the like what I think we both agree would be interesting, which is like is there anything you'd like to see a quote unquote criterion edition of?

Yes, yes, yes, yes. But like what does that mean? It means a movie that's there it's either H for me, the criteria was either and or hard to hard to find um uh under uh hard to find uh very little information about it or uh um under trying to open my note come on come on uh uh uh uh Oh uh uh here we go. Uh unpopular uh for its time. And uh my number one uh is hackers. You'd love to see a good a good print of that with some commentary. You get Johnny Lee on there talking about it. Yes. And there's a lot of good because of uh the anniversary, I don't know what year, but there's a lot of uh there's been some good interviews and panels, but I want a nice commentary and a fancy uh steel case cover, uh all of that.

Yeah, yeah. Uh I just ordered a steel book of the new Master and Commander, which I'm very excited about. They're finally doing a 4K UHD of Master and Commander I don't understand what UHD is, except that I think I can tell. So like when when you're watching Netflix, especially, and something comes on and you see perhaps unsurprisingly a jet black background, but white letters that seem almost like too white, like they're so poppin', so bright, there's so much contrast. That's usually that's a sign. That's you could um 4K UHD, yeah, you usually get ultra high definition, which is I'll leave it to Syracuse to explain the technology of that, but I would describe it as like really pop-in lights.

And you just high levels of contrast and so like it gives you a lot more I don't know, I wanna say dynamic range to like play in. That's the thing. I used to be a SmartyPants who could explain this. It looks great. It doesn't look like a fucked up gas station copy of eight and a half. I would love to see what a fucked up that would actually be. I probably got it here somewhere. That would be kind of kind of fun. Um Br oh Brothers Bloom, which is uh Ryan Johnson's second film, which is Adrian Brody and Uh um uh the Hulk, uh Mark Ruffalo. Yeah, yeah. And it's a it's a fun, silly movie. It's it's so silly. It Yeah, and I would forget who it is. Um, but you you see so much of what'll be knives out.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh man, I love knives out. Love knives out Uh uh Tarnation, which is a uh short documentary that i uh it's something very few people have seen. kind of another gay one, but a uh young gay man uh has all of this uh home it's it's like a gray gardens except He's gay and his mom's schizophrenic and tarnation, you say. Yeah. And uh I I would love a God, I I would love a where are they now t type of situation and how he's grown as a filmmaker because he only does make small articles. I'm sorry, who was the director? I don't remember as it name even. It it'll be in notes. Um, this is purely th this is a vanity pick. Love li Love Lies Bleeding, uh Kristen Stewart's most recent movie, and I'm I love it.

Um one that I think everyone could agree on, and I was actually like really really surprised it's not in in here or w in like the official collection. Hearts of darkness. What the heck? Not why isn't there uh uh I'm not sure what I'm saying. What would you be looking for from the from like her uh Eleanor gives an updated commentary on it maybe? I wouldn't even hear her talk about it, especially after Megalopolis happened. It'd be interesting to hear her go back and talk about him mortgaging everything for movies back then. I I would l uh love any sort of extra. I love that movie so goddamn much. I do I I do too, and if you also have a decent uh print of it. I or y you know, just a decent uh not print, but you know, uh version of it.

Because mine sucks and even on uh like Amazon there's There's no good way to watch. Maybe it's on maybe take it as red. It's it's tricky, all those things, for sure. Uh especially the audio could be c cleaned up. I think. Um you can really hear him sitting there shirtless with his titties sitting out, typing and yelling. Uh uh that that that's it. Um I don't know why Ghibli is isn't in there probably because uh rights, however, they're uh everything I would want From a Criterion Ghibli already exists. Yeah. I mean I've got a lot of the stuff that I would want from quote unquote Criterion Disc, like I think of there are places that uh that do do that well. What are the ones I wrote down? Um Um, I think one of my all-time favorite um Blu-rays is the Godfather Restoration, just because it it's when I you first get to see um What's that video called?

Art of the emulsion or whatever. There's a wonderful documentary on the Godfather, just a a terrifying documentary about the condition of the Godfather movies at the time of the restoration. They did it and um it's absolutely fascinating. Because now I guess we're so used to the idea that like, oh yeah, we just we've we had this we had these three copies of Metropolis and we got the best of each and we da da da da but like To see the actual condition that some of Columbia's copies of F Godfather was in were like uh mind blowing what they had to do, like frame by frame. And that was still a pretty new idea when that came out. My other one is like pretty much almost anything by Edgar Wright. Just because well I love Edgar Wright.

But also his he has multiple And very good commentary tracks on I think all of his where it'll be like if you watch Hot Fuzz or World's End or whatever, it could be him and Simon Pig doing the writing, the writing commentary There's another one where like it'll be him and tech people from the tech team talking about tech stuff about it. And like it's just neat because like he cares a lot about that stuff. And it's neat to hear his POV. And describing like how, you know, he made baby made the car do this thing and baby driver or whatever. I love stuff like that. I don't have any particular criterion Especially ones I still have so much stuff I need to watch. I'm always adding things to my list and rarely ticking it off.

I I watch too much Taskmaster is the problem. Um You you spam I'm always spamming people spamming. Always spamming. I forgot Tropic Thunder. It should be there for all the reasons. Yes. Every The commentary is awesome. There is. Yes. It's it's awesome. I can't remember. Awesome in literally. In awe. No. Okay. Oh, but that I could see that happen. Oh, oh my God. Oh. I love it so much. I'm gonna go watch it again. I love it so much. Like and and you know, and treat yourself. Go watch um Go watch uh uh Lil Lindsay Ellis. Is it? Is she the one who did the video on Tropic Thunder? She does I think it was Lindsay Ellis who has a really good video on Tropic Thunder. Yes, she does. She should be uh on the Some mama too, isn't that cute?

Yes. I all my YouTubers are growing up. It's wonderful. I know. Thanks. I hate it. Um is there anything else? Do you do you have any anything funny? No, I don't think I do. I don't think I do. Um AI is terrible. I'm a awful, awful person for my extreme enthusiasm every day. My girl wants her tassels all the time, tassels all the time. Um I'm glad I'm glad it's out there and they make me happy. I hope they're not assholes. They make me really happy You know, in the same way that I think the taskmaster people should make me some kind of a California ambassador for the program. Maybe maybe criterion. You know, I'm not asking for money or anything. I don't even like I'm not even asking for a shirt or a tote bag.

You know, I just need something to keep my hands busy. You shouldn't ask for like five minutes in the clause. Not even five. I think you could uh uh get get it done in one. Not a little bit. Gipson Manzucus. Can you imagine the damage I could do in that call? Dismantle. What's his phrase? I said it from the beginning. Destroy, dismantle. There's too many phrases. He just keeps flipping tables over. It's so goddamn funny. You uh you glossed over it. Th that season Taskmaster. every one of the cast is a an agent a different agent of chaos whereas some of the you could like miss it and go like, oh Rosie, she's a she's a fun, sexy mom. And she's definitely a hilarious, fun, very sexy mom. But like don't Don't sleep on her doing backwards break dancing in episode two.

It's really fucking funny. No, I'm just sleeping on her. I would I would enjoy sleeping on her if she's Doing great. And you should watch the one where Sally Phillips gives Alex a special cuddle. Have you ever seen that one? Yes. God, I I think she sticks cake in his armpits. Sally Phillips is so fucking hot. Like, not in a like, ooh, like I want a Jiz way, but in like, oh my God, she's so, she's just no, she's basically she's sexy in like an old-fashioned way. And the reason she's sexy is because she's so fucking funny and open and like everything she does. She's like people that I'm just attracted to in real life. You know? She's just everything she does is just hilarious. And you can tell she does not take anything.

too seriously. And I think she almost almost all might also be an athlete. She picks up Alex pretty easily at one point, which surprised me. He weighs fourteen stones. Oh that's true. I think she might run fourteen stone yes, fourteen stone. I still definitely know that's another one I know it's another one of those made up things. I I agree. You gotta really go out and and find this radio show and it's called like Nibbins on the Cracker Back or something. Or you're like, what? And you're like We don't say that anymore. Dad Daddy's Jaddy Daddy Chester's Molasses Lesson or whatever, just all these fucking things. They just come up with these crazy ass names of things and you're like like I just see on like eight out of ten cats.

Like what what the fuck what the fuck is that? Never mind the I d it's all just just making up words over there. These And I feed into it. I do that. I'm not even meant to be British. Governor? In it? Kevin? Are you taking the mick, bruv? Are you taking the mick bruv? I can't even laugh at that because I don't know if you're not going to be able to do that. Oh, that's that's Fatcha. That's Fatcha. She says, are you taking the Mick Brov? Isn't it something said on Taskmaster? Fa is Fucha says it dozens of times every single episode. No. Do you know who Facha is? She makes that dumbheart thing with her hands. She got a pee in her hijab. Oh. Did you watch the Outtakes? I love I like one. She watched the Outtakes?

I I no, I haven't. There's two sets of Outtakes and they're really, really good. Is it bad that it it's okay when I that I laugh uh that about the hi hi hijab stuff, right? She she laughs. pronouncing the word hijab and they have to do all these takes. It's really but it looked she caught a she got a pee. She did catch a pee in her hijab. Bruv, bruv. It's a job. I've got extras. And she wants to marry Greg. They're gonna get married. She's a very sexual woman, that's what she said. Task master. What? Your task is to fart. Fart. Oh god, and then his hemorrhoid slips out. Poor fella. Imagine if you hemorrhoided so hard it made a flappy sound. Oh cool Oh no, I take it back. Taskmaster's terrible.

Terra is just as terrible as Midsummer. No one uh God You can see him burnt alive in his own. And Mike Wozniak is is the assistant. on on uh the kids testmaster show where Rose Matafeo is the host. He plays the Alex Horn role and he's very, very good on Kids Taskmaster. I think I've uh I I have a new new idea because you're gonna be the California ambassador. Oh, thank you. Well and you're you you uh will uh be this uh some some l bl bla uh you can't pronounce the job, I can't s you you'll be the hypocrite lecture. Are you quoting the wasteland? No. Shanti. Shanti. April is the cruelest month, breeding lilacs out of the dead land, mixing memory with desire, stirring dull roots with spring rain.
