I'm gonna set aside for a minute the whole like nobody remembers anything from before they were five. How much does somebody remember about disassociating? Because the cat would meow like that, close to that, a lot. And boy, I really could have used that word yesterday and I refused to even type it. And it starts like this, it goes doom doom doom doom doom doom doom doom doom doom doom doom down this picture into you and me. And my I watched my dog think about the size of a KFC chicken breast. I listened to the first half of a reconcile r reconcilable difference episode w that will um it's Merlin's more popular Yeah, I um I had an ear well we used to call it an earache. I still struggle a little bit with like where stuff goes because unlike John Locke, I live in a world that has a lot of different means of information getting moved around.

But the thing is, the commonplace book is where that stuff goes. I doubt they sat around fretting whether it goes in this book or that book or that book or this book that I keep at my country place or this book that's in the kitchen, you know. Because I have to think about what's an easy way for it to get in. Like you've got this fixed number of card catalog numbers in whatever your system is. Take out two sheets of paper. You write tasks over here and you write projects over there. Well, because the innovation in my time and my experience with apps that do this is the brilliant co-commingling of projects and tasks and a third axis called context. You could say, like, just show me a list of all my tasks.

And when you view by context, you're also choosing to view not by context. But then an index that exists outside of those day-to-day pages, however you do it, then you've got an index where you could be like manually adding in value to that information by contextualizing it. I don't want to screw this up with a bunch of Synology stuff. When I do a notes document of with shared well that I share with other people, it's really the easiest way I know of to like collaborate, you know, in a pleasant way. You've got another section of stuff that is at the house but is not wrapped. And the easiest way I know of to handle this because of the wonderful capability of Apple Notes in a wonderful way is to always have an area at the bottom.

Whereas like sometimes you're like, oh, this thread was really doing really bangin', and now it's not. Given that. So why is anyone curious? I don't know what it means, but I love saying it. That's where you can't stop playing you can't we don't say that. That is lonely as fuck. Like, yeah, I was scared, like, uh, what's wrong with me? John Sirius, I don't know if you finished listening to that episode from last night. With and if you've ever been a little kid on a plane with otherwise normal to perfect health, you know that even in the best circumstances, especially little kids, they're very sensitive. Oh my weed. Uh but it's not. Yeah, it's rarely enough. But it's my understanding that in the John Locke version, then John Locke was uh what a philosopher and scientist.

It's it's very well it also just shows you how dignified a man can get when he starts shaving his head. unless you come up with the wonkiest goddamn system in the world like Bujo and rewrite your task list every day like an animal. Like as somebody who read that book after 2001. How much water you've had. I don't have a executive direction. Yeah, no, I guess my job is to keep the Gantt chart updated instead of doing work. Um I just want a way or I hope that sooner will be a way to search for something. We can add that little inbox icon, you know, emoji and the word inbox as an H2. It it feels like I don't know. Your Obsidian vault is named Lucas with Vault ID B. Psychosis thing. Mm well I'm alright, but my mouth sounds we uh blah blah.

7 30 p. At a PM. Oh, sorry, let me put it differently. I've been well behaved. Yeah, she was the perfect one who passed away and that's the one. Uh lap rather and um Alex opening cans of things. I'll I'll do whatever you want. Yeah, you know, Misty Watercolor Memories. I wonder if I still have this. Oh, y okay, how about this? Uh but then he ended up saying I think something like, you know, like I I don't know how this happened. Must be nice. Yeah, there's like Capgrass Delusion is one I remember hearing about. Diana, if only it were just him. I feel like in order for people to understand at least my conception of self and how my story of like how I think I'm how I I am. We'll get to it. The one to whom Chevy Chase says, Audrey, can I help you with that, please?

Uh I was talking about my friend John best friend John's father giving me that advice about taking the keys out of the trunk in the car. With my right index finger, I um was just kind of idly like plucking around in my in my ear a little bit, you know, like you do, like ah, geez, fuck, this really sucks. Something I heard over and over as in a kid that's like tattooed in my brain. But that guitar riff at the beginning is almost identical to a theme song from a kids T V show. It would be like m me put accidentally putting out a bowl of ibuprofen and and a cat going up and just going yum yum yum. You know, write it down. Ur even if they reacted uh uh well, the shame would still be there. Uh ironic.

Well I made the incorrect assumption, being like, oh, this is some sort of performance art and then started to skim the Wikipedia article and Yeah. Wait shh shh shh hey hey everybody there's gonna be a high high um high friend. Um you break the little world when you do this. That's pretty good. Uh I I actually did want to ask. Thank you for that. See now the story's already falling apart because we used to d drive to Florida, which sucked because our car had no air conditioning. I discovered that when I was trying this stuff, which does not people say C B D oil cannot make you high. So I mean I do a lot of pissing on a spark plug and trying different things. you've got to counteract side effects of things.

Three. What can maybe get used to the case? 321. It's so Casey does KCS has to do so much reading on that show about things that are interesting only to John. Uh to something could you tell me about how you got interested in um whatever this is. feel like I s I sound defensive and there's no need to be, but like I feel like I already do that. It's mainly a like a give yourself permission thing, I think. Uh what's the other big one people use? What do you do with it once you've done it? But I I knew that's what I'm saying. Well, we get to the part that I found so interesting and utterly not that useful for me, but I'd love to talk when we're done with this, I'd love to talk about the index, how he came up with the index.

Pivotal I'm I'm I'm um I'm abandoning I'm abandoning it. The or the program as as you said. And you were talking about John Locke on lost because he got out of his wheelchair. So let's say you've got this have we adequately described I feel like we haven't what a commonplace book is. But the idea is you Hold up, I don't know w what is considered an engineering notebook or does it not matter? uh a diary of your progress with and you could s ask it to be admissible really swear to it and say like well on this page 17 you'll notice there's no missing page 18. The same way that like in Dewey Decibel or Library of Congress, you've got topics and subtopics like in a thesaurus, in a classic, not the not the dictionary thesaurus, in a classic Roger's Thesaurus, where as we all know the first entry is existence.

It's not AA alligator, it's existence because it takes starts from the biggest concept in my brain every time. Which I think is a very interesting way to think about um epistemology. Right? And but supposedly one of the things he does is he would use have like an alphabetical listing of topics. You can't change and like I say in Bujo, the one of the things I think is cool about bullet journals is that idea of having an index of the pages, having you could have an index of the topics. You could like sort you could look at it by you could pick your axis. uh out of that one, I warned John that my Britishisms are becoming more prominent. Exactly. theoretically does something special and different.

Mm-hmm. You it sounded like you said we were saying you uh you know where to find stuff, but then there's certain kinds of things you still have difficulty locating. PKM that you know I show off and like look at look at this, it looks so pretty. Which you know, bad on me if I cared about that. It requires more flicking around because even if you match up for keywords, you still need to then and like drill down into it, right? Because we're people and we're busy. Uh there's just y you know, no way to do that in well, I'm sorry, can continue. But I I know like how I like information to be presented. And let's say a lot of what I do from my commonplace book is I go out and I find stuff and I find either like interesting things to blog or I find things that I'd like to quotes, I'd like to remember.

This is how I roll. hit a bookmarklet and when I hit that bookmarklet I wanted it to append that safari information to a document I should adjust. I would create a notes file for my kid's birthday, a note file for Christmas. It's almost like my rule of wikis in the days even before Wikimedia, like in sticky or back in the day, my rule always rule my Like, don't do that. appending um versus inserting under a heading. And if you want to use this to cheat on your on your final hakuna matata, but like I I'm that's that's not how I roll. It lied its real meaning and unintentionally concatenated with other ideas. Beep, beep, beep, comment. Oh well yeah that too. You know, you can't it's difficult to distract yourself from it.

Unnecessary medical things you do for your children because uh of your anxiety. how his family was really Catholic and he was taken to meet this really old nun. But when I play it over in my head, despite the clarity of the event, I still have a lot of questions about what actually happened. on one of uh my dad's metal shelves in our garage. And uh Sir, what year is this? It Coke up. uh Sybil. It was twenty one time. And one time we were talking about all the. Who changes appearance or is in disguise? I sometimes I'm reluctant to bring these things up because it's kind of one of those you can't unsee it things, like once you hear about a concept and then you're like, oh my gosh, I wonder if I have that.

Or, gosh, I feel like I've had that capgrass delusion is a psychiatric disorder in which a person holds a delusion that a friend, spouse, parent, close family member, or pet. uh yeah, derealization much more uh I don't want to say less severe uh but it I I feel No, I I will say it it it is a less severe feeling uh because w disassociation typically is you feel completely outside of your body and sometimes it's like you are looking I okay, let's uh talk about how uh uh people are whatever you want. where people suffered madness. It's not it's not fun. that had to be traveled for this to get where somebody like uh Cotard or Capgrass or whomever like gives it a name, right? And yet here I am. you know, when you have m more control over that focus, it's that's just been uh really good.

Mm the year. Uh heads across the sky. th thudding, leaden, puffy feeling of like, you know, it makes you feel disconnected. And I discovered something that felt, I guess, in my in retrospect, as I remember, kind of like a scab, and I picked out a little bit, and then um probably three or four tablespoons of gray white yellowish pus started coming out of my ear. I don't really I didn't think about that a lot till later. And um, and I think she gave me some of those and I kind of dab dab dabbed at it, but the pus kept coming. Have you ever seen like a picture of a hobo clown? uh we r oh god I feel like m my grandparents might have had like an Igrand still yeah like I'm telling you people had shit like this.

Oh, yeah. There's different there's three different kinds of clowns. But um anyways, um because you gotta use Google to really find out what's true. When you stop when you stop the show that we're making to compliment me about something. But shh sh and yeah, so it's hey, uh that's good. Well what about his uh t toes and his wrists? to the pressure on a plane. But no one else has heard it. I just think it's funny. existing in two or more places simultaneously, or that it's been relocated to another site. I mean I don't uh I don't know. CBG, I'm more persuaded, does not have you know psychoactive effects, but it it kind of it's kind of like when my focal in started kicking in. feel over like overstimulated or under stimulated, like I don't feel a need to like go, you know, slam an energy drink or anything.

It's a uniquely perfect way to learn how little somebody knows about a topic when they say, why don't you adjust? I'm gonna learn more about it and keep doing it and I'd love to know if you find any scholarship. Anyways, I don't know what that means. Yes. Oh my god. I I I did the challenge, but I didn't do the challenge because the challenge is about doing the challenge. Uh uh uh Claire. They should they've got, you know, they they're they're little polycule I think uh just from Why are they a polycule? On in polycular. I say it one t one time, unlike cum gutters, which I you just I I can't stop thinking about. But also it makes it makes it makes sense. Let's do a show where I don't interrupt.

a commonplace book at one point and I dn remember not liking it. sort of revisit the concept of uh commonplace books the same way John Locke did. Okay, so that's what I like I was like, okay, this is absolutely I'm like this I am so glad that I've read this and now uh I will probably think about it but never actually do it. Uh Stephen Berlin Johnson wrote a really great piece a million years ago about how he uses uh Devonthink as his as what we now call a PKM, but like how all information that he has kind of at some point sort of passes through. Devonthink. Um, I got my attractive nuisance feelers up really fast because I thought, you know what I don't want to do for this challenge? is just run around saying like how do I make a book like John Locke and what app do I use for that?

acquisition and retrieval. Well, one neat thing about that, that let's just get it out of the way, is like that's is sort of like me and my notebook, right? Both of us have uh uh both of us use photos almost too. in person. and like literary things, th you know, things that you might want to like return to later. you know, bound books, sometimes with like a brown kind of cardboard cover, and then like it's a bunch of pages, usually with a grid, and every page has a number and I think usually a date. I don't know. The peas and the bees. Supposedly, who was that who was the guy who came up with the periodic table where he says he saw it in a dream? j just w words. Um boy that also just really screams as something that I don't need to be doing.

So you're gonna keep an updated list. So like why are you fretting about your at lawn list while you're on a plane? In order to have that system work and thrive and and be alive in your life, you have to you you're gonna want to utilize all three of those things. Like for a night watchman or whatever, like you you or an engineer, right? within a certain topic area. Uh for for for all of you people. to a a chatty g thing that relates to the well no no no be because uh wait so is this the show Command space and A and enter. uh brain school period like when I had a bunch of downtime and I needed a place to take a bunch of n when you have Yeah, I I don't know. is when I open whatever uh typically now chat GPT mostly, whatever LLM app and I'm like I was working on something.

And I don't know. easily move all of that into at least a project folder just so there's less cognitive friction. Um, I'm trying to find a really good example of this that will make some kind of sense. If it's a thread that you like and you want to find again, do at least two things. The ability, this is very specific. And I have a variety of ways of doing this. The next H2 would be something like stuff I've already stuff or the next one would be like um the basic idea is you have H2s on that page. guideline, my North Star was to keep everything on one page for as long as possible. Hmm. And so okay, sorry. This is all for me, right? And now okay, so now let's go to the pull method. And willing to fiddle around a little bit, you can kind of move stuff off off informally into its own new thread.

Any other tips and tricks? I doubt this is the first time this sex man's been a sex man. Uh Thank me for my service. That's not necessarily not necessarily a piece of wisdom. And sometimes there'll just be like this weird memory that I can't shake, but I also can't completely prove it happened or happened in the way I remembering it had happening. I love his I love his stuff about women and men. Oh terror and and the like the like silence and then like I guess like a screaming noise. Y I have one that immediately came to mind. Yeah, yeah. Oh God, really? what we used to call multiple personality disorder. Which you may remember. has been replaced by an identical imposter. Adam Conover the other day and I didn't and I was really proud of myself.

deals in the commodity of anxiety that's masking as anger. at your body from a distance. But d disassociation it it uh it's depends and it s uh sucks. Schizoaffective s wow, schizoaffective disorder is under that umbrella and also kind of the um the the Never mind. back seat on the right side and my ear had been bothering me. And it was very upsetting. products, uh things my grandfather used to say. I remember one day I was just telling Kelsey about this. Original recipe chicken breast off of the table. into my mom's room, jumped on her waterbed, that's right. kind of mostly terrified, but a little bit like angry. on your uh uh the little shade. Um and so driving a thousand miles was not super fun.

I've I've never seen a real quote real I've only seen Chili's two. Actually I think I think Sarah Jane and the Doctor go there in a nineteen seventy-five episode of Doctor Who. A colleague who used to remind me of that every week and I would say, well, unfortunately though, I have been made extremely high by CBD oil in a way that was very unpleasant to me. I don't know. That have like you know, uh like uh there was a background is like a a woman meditating in front of a pile of stones or something. Um being being nice being dead be nice about that. Uh my idea of like I I don't think the point of the challenge is necessarily to do them and like give points for whether you did it or not, but I understand why.

If if uh chase chasing the right zero. Um, I I don't want to spoil the ending of mine. Papers that he like puts together. uh which we wouldn't have time to go too deeply into except to say that I've found that like there's a handful of places that are are are useful for different roles of information. Oh, a notion, right? do this already and I'm also pretty happy with how I do it with the uh with well a a couple a exceptions. Farting around with does this go in drafts? like a shark making concentrically smaller circles around what appears to be the information that you want. I mean, accepting the fact that what? like a patent that you need to keep extensive notes in your engineering notebook and you need to basically writing down the bones.

Um, and I don't know if this is accurate. Um, but best practices. Because it's alphabetical. for the vowel after that consonant. Like let's say you got B. Which means project. I don't know. in a way that this admittedly simple, brilliant, but limited version of doing this on paper would be, right? I'm sorry. was it that you're on the show we recorded last night? You know, oh oh, you know, and and if you collected all the potato chips in one bag, you'd be able to put them in in a lorry. Just keep my head above water and it just nope, nope, it doesn't work. whatever like ChatGPT actually calls it. tags and they are um just descendants of how I used to use contexts in uh omnifocus or whatever was the cool app of of the week.

s survived f in Gmail because just you know it'll be a few. something as anodyne as when did I buy a replacement for this filter? Um I just prefer that to Amazon searching because it's faster. I just don't have a good way to find something other than uh uh like I know that I want to uh I I'm Uh and and no, I uh it was a I think it was a family guy joke, so I tried to filter it. It's a funny show. Yes. Um because if I the reason I have it all pretty and organized. an opportunity to start taking a bunch of notes and just go into something clean. Yeah, and and you can't s for example search for cannibal caraid and easily Cannibal Karata. This wasn't just my fault. Uh no, it uh the r uh you know what it takes two to lie, one to lie and one to listen.

Um so think of a something you could potentially ideally, hopefully, something you could talk about here. Yes, and that is why I adore Obsidian, because they're it's it's a wiki and you can pop between links and as opposed to, you know, just another string of like bird identification thread or whatever. I will frequently, this started with deciding on potential birthday gifts for our kid and Christmas gifts for our kid. What if I don't want that inbox area at the bottom of the document? things are have been me and Chatty G uh trying to figure out what was wrong with this bookmarklit that we made together and can it go where I want it to go. Book marklets. Huh, I I'm just realizing now that once again going through just the steps of using this tool it is another uh way of uh thinking about Yeah, yes.

Yeah. That's kind of been the problem. There's a uh a turns out, but a well actually, and then a w why don't you just, and then a and yes I will boy, what an unpleasant stew that is. You're not in trouble. Yeah, it's Francis, the terrible trash boy. Oh sorry. Uh my my body double does. Um what are some other ones? I I think so. Yeah. dis the syndromes and disorders of uh derealizing and uh disassociating. Subtle distinctions. Oh, I wouldn't have known. th the h hallucinations were such a distraction that y it was very difficult s to function and Yep, yep. Oh. The uh w y oh gosh the I thought my dog will die right now. I don't remember if it was Gunter Gable Williams. I it's A lot of things were just presented to us as things that were normal and then we just had to deal with that.

Um but the um I can hear him saying it's a little bit of a I I I I I nailed that little guy to the wall. Yes, Merlin, how are you? Yeah. To the bootleg episode. I i it's like you've if you've never i it's like the weenus where where every kid uh discovers a weeness and they're like, aha, what that's a funny uh that's a funny sound for a not that funny body part. We we've talked about co I feel like we've talked about commonplace books, uh well I know that we've talked about commonplace books a number of times, and we did sort of we we read uh don't need to imagine for myself and I do imagine for you that we're both already doing elements of this. I'm not quite sure where to begin this sequence.

If you create for yourself something called the commonplace book, and so like you've got, let's say, a hundred sheets of paper in it that you've bound together. um fiddling really with some kind of a system. But uh that that that's the thing is something I do not have and sh but still not something something you don't need. A classic like let's say you've got quotations about religion. Um, but you've got you know 21 consonants and five vowels. um sin like in the last five years. Uh use for Chad Chi? I have to do that. And the uh we talked about this a little bit the not a little bit, a lot a lot of bit last week, and that's such a a lot a lot of it And it's not it's not the baseball headman. I have a cannabinoid thread now, right?

Car to uh what? Message? Um 'cause he does he have a preference for Greek? Um like I'll just go pretty random. uh ideas might be it's always signing in Philadelphia, books, Michael Scott, like whatever it is. So what I would consider sort of a the push model of this, right? Suggestions that you found helpful along these lines, like sort of like my idea of like, oh rename them and give them emojis, are the things that have helped you manage large amounts of this information better? Um and then um so if you want to tease the uh the after show. We'll see how this this is. were to me as a little kid what I at least what I remember being the most painful of the things that happened to kids normally.

Why did you do this? I I I could not create a forgery of the forgery. No I remember you t I I remember you telling me about it in one time. No, it's it's one of those things that kind of uh can overlap. Yes. a way to distinguish it at the moment. that the that you're having hallucinations and that what you're seeing isn't real and that As somebody who's had a lot of trips in life, it doesn't make it that much better to know that you're weird. Oh yeah, the five people of the five hundred. Uh uh the one after either or the nineteen ninety-seven or eight one Yeah, I sure. Uh n it's no I'm trying, I'm trying. Uh uh yeah. I wonder how the pus no pus that I recall. Right? Well you you you did a really interesting pronunciation.

But y you hear the term cum gutter and it's like that's disgusting. You know, when he talks about putting together when he talks about putting together that book, like, you know, where he actually builds his kind of builds a book from scratch out of a bunch of Are we thinking of the the same thing? Last night. And maybe I don't know, like hot tips for keeping your your writing table clean. probably two centuries ago for like how to categorize information. And show me the blueprints. I'm gonna start I'm gonna start I'm gonna start indicating to you when things are petering off. I have everything in my life real I know where to find it with the exception of So something like um like a priority related or areas of responsibility related?

Yeah, can can and you know what else I screw up? Merlin. Um that's good bread. Typo. I stand by what I said before. But you wanted a bookmarker to append text to a specific note, uh particularly into the uh inbox section uh with three octothorps, the H3 inbox section of DBF commonplace book, or alternatively to the end of that file. Yeah, informed consent. Yes, and an intense, unavoidable, like un seven? It was enough where I'm like, I could see that, but I know it's not mine. I don't typically disassociate. a fuzzy like v almost you're in a video game type. A note like a get uh oh, oh I'm gonna go. I don't think we say that anymore. Some it it it depends. The I would maybe it's because I'm used to it, but I would just you know, I don't know if I've ever had like a true a true My wife told me that ChatGPT is making people psychotic.

What Alex and I are talking about is I've been experimenting different with different weed things to help me with how I am. That's what I wanted to ask you about because if there's no It's weird, it's weird to like not feel Oh, I've seen m many of those, especially when you're saying that's a very simple Zen solution. And I uh totally didn't. It's this good stuff to do. He had this part of this also, and this is sort of, I guess, potentially kind of Bujo adjacent, but definitely Devonthink adjacent. Uh that's okay. No. Stephen Miller. where I've been working on a project and not in the like project li uh however I w I want a better way to find uh things in ChatGPT and I do because it's the only inbox, as you would say, I suppose, that I like a pretty rough metal band.

The first five percent of this is about what it says this thread is called. like one very important file, for example, in Obsidian. That's you can kind of do that now, like pretty easy. the how the information is used and synthesized, which sounds there's always still more to learn about what you assume about the world, including how computers work. Someone, and I still don't know who, wrote Alex Cox on one of impermanent marker No. So is this a uh flashball memory for you? And I have such a recollection of like, oh God, my ear was starting to really hurt, you know, that kind of piercing, but also that kind of uh f discovered something called C B G. Yes. We don't edit for three, two. Whereas new information emerges that fit between two previous pieces of information.

Oh, cardioid? Pray for Mojo. I'm pretty loose about creating new threads, especially if I don't want to gum up a thread. Yes. It's like when you hear about like, you know, tower snipers or whatever, and you're like, alright, finally snaps. Informed consent. No, I don't think they do that anymore. You, it this occurred to me a minute ago about you, but I realize it's absolutely true about me, and I suspect it's true about a lot of people who listen to this program, which is that in order Oh, must be regular tour to France, am I right? I remember one time I did a Burger Chef scratch-off game and I lost because I didn't know what the lowest weight class was in boxing. I'm trying to help him. I want to show you my weed thing was working.

And then and well he's also smart, but you know He's he's fine for what he is. Didn't they throw tampons at the dog? Okay. You understand? So that's pretty good. Uh I mean I don't know about that. I don't think so. I wrote the three as a potential title. Oh. In it. A coppa or a copper? I think it should be spelled more like carotid. And I find boring. No, hard pass. We'll get to it. That's uh that's um uh the other Quaid. We went to the circus. I think we pretty much pretty much covered it. They're different things. I do it all the time. That's not it. Can you move all the later stuff about Bookmartlets to a new thread, please? But then again, but then again, like building a boat from scratch.

And then, you know, there was that time for a while it was one of those scams like um you know like tonsils where suddenly everybody had to get uh quote unquote tubes in their ears Yeah, you have things that like you you feel like I feel like I have things where like I don't have any trouble at all remembering something very clearly from a very long time ago I think one way to discover who the vulnerable people in the world are is somebody who needs you to understand a very subtle distinction in order to really appreciate who they are. I thought you I thought you were depressed. I mean there's a lot of restaurants where they make exactly the same restaurant. All the st all the problems that are easy to fix have been solved.

Right, and notoriously actually one of the most difficult forms of meditation. Have this sativa and just just relax. Digga digga digga digg-dig-dig-dig-dig Challenge. The point of I think you're supposed to say future Marco. Okay. Page as a markdown link with the correct title. There's always one. Now the ear. Emmett the clown. This was a c a a clown. I you know, I really the thing is uh uh you know, it's a journey. And so like, you know, I've got searches to go like try and find that stuff and like triangulate or just remembering like, oh, there's this thing that happened. I I just thought it was really interesting as a way of in a way that also that I found so invigorating with getting things done, the the ultimate classic D version one idea of getting things done.

If you're trying to make this anything more than a fun project for you to jerk off with, you've got to be sensible about how this how people will want to find this information rather than how you like to, you know, capture and organize this information.
