And like but how do you imagine you make this leap, this like t two-generational leap into what this thing's capable of without first being comfortable having the goddamn stupid thing strapped to your face? It's it's still I I'm glad I'm so, so glad we're m uh we they're moving away from from the eyes. What I'm saying is like they all can be true. It's like, yeah, but it's isn't it kind of worth it? Like oh yeah. uh practically phonetic. who Matt Healy is and and what the drum around that is because right now the biggest concert series in America is Taylor s Swift.

I I shouldn't tell stories, personal stories, but you know, there were early days in our relationship where we were sort of like we we hit it off really quickly, but then we had to kind of like find our level on sensibilities in some ways and There was things like, you know, one time we went to a a grocery store and I put a giant red can of Folger's coffee in the cart. I mean, you know, it would be like what are you gonna use that to like gain eight inches of height and in reaching a shelf? What if what what where would what would we do with that? of Castro and like north of 19th, then that would really be a lower, lesser, middle, noy.

Bear trap. the the number one song of the most popular recording artist of our time and somebody from another band that might have made a joke that's believed to be racist on a podcast and they were dating. Did you read that? Oh my god, I could totally start doing that. I I feel like I'm a I'm the kind of person who does Charlie work quite uh quite well, but I don't bash the rats. Like laser beams or flashlights or walkie-talkies or something. I'm the Jew. Like you actually just had some kind of like you saw like it was kind of like Fantasia with the dancing rops. Uh Xanthem Gum and Dexter in the morning. Isn't that his name, Oswald Cobblepot?
You should watch Blackberry. And they do a lot of good stuff with, you know, showing stuff, you know, from the time. cut but it's Oprah giving away a blackberry and everyone in the audience completely loses their mind it's so fucking flat The commercials are so loud on radio now. The magic's keeping him alive, but it's making him crazy. In that case, probably FCC. Lipstick. Little treats or comfort items during times of uh privation. Like what's a policy? I watching the event or watching the responses? this on video.
That's that's a good use of your time. Uh all of like it it seemed like people weren't very excited on the internet and I uh Mm what did you say? I mean it is ridiculous. The same way that I was excited, my main thing was I was excited about OS improvements. Like I mean do you not understand why someone would say that at all or do you think these felt like that's a good idea? T totally makes sense. They really believed that. keyboard. I don't know. Like it star well it starts with familiarity with the tools. exist. because we're immediately comparing it to something that is a not not just a mature product product, but a product that is probably past its prime more than you have the eyes. Too cool for school pessimists will almost always be the default reaction for people who lack a personality otherwise.
And they didn't? For yes, I aye. cr creation and prototypes eight years ago. And again, maybe I'm becoming I'm ascending to become some kind of utterly insufferable beatific being being. Something happened and now we're paralyzed from the chest down and we need a way to get around. the pasta doesn't turn into gluey worms. Because people feel strongly about fucking everything. Why are you excited about this? Then they made it so that you could connect via your phone, which was incredible. interacted because that you again you have to learn to watch TV before you create the universe. And then once you've done that, it's like I know people claim to hate it, but that first round of a video game where you're doing the like tutorial level, well, the what do you want to do?
Which I think is an M2 that I got less than a year ago. They had this tiny little hard drive and it was really small and it was really cute, but it got better and it got better and it got better. would say. Pets now. What's that thing called? But it's n you're not interacting with the UI itself. like checking your email. as a flathead screwdriver in a pinch. It's about multiple ways to finish the work that you need to do. It's like there's a lot of news new stuff alongside that. this laptop computer next to me. when we're working on omnifocus, I think it was him, but he it should have been him. completion. disappear everywhere because that oh you know how about this oh airdrop where it can be continued after you're not near each other we didn't used to be able to sync folders we didn't used to be able to sync folders between two computers systems so that I didn't even have to do anything on the computer where the problem was happening in order to fix it.
But I'm like, ooh, maybe this time, maybe this time, and maybe we'll we'll get three D uh uh cameras in our phones eventually because it's it's uh fun and maybe people will be able to make Yeah. you know, tippy toe or zigzag and say something and know that it's captured somewhere. Which kills me. But they are also very promising when taken as a group of functionalities for what that means to a future where you have something like ski goggles on your face. Podcast with Alex Cox and Merlin Mann. Oh man, those elites. Chiba. I'd never heard the word before and I in one case had to go to the grocery store to pick it up and I didn't even know how to spell it. I mean I it's a plant, but I thought a lot of people.
Dwight, what are you doing with all the coffee? Uh fair, fair. And I was like, oh Golden Gate Park, it's like a whole big thing and it's the guy who did Central Park and like oh this is great and they close off this street on the weekends. You know? Or I just want to tell you about like where I saw a funny sign. Taylor Swift, I I would say yes. Because he dated Taylor Swift? It's kind of like knowing the difference between like Ike Eisenhower and Ike Baronholt. And I th I think it's a good thing. I read. But oh you know I'm gonna say I'm gonna start I'm gonna start saying it's a little birdie. The doesn't the penguin, the villain from Batman, doesn't he bef literally befriend penguins, or is this another thing that my mind has just created?
Girlfriend. you know, having sounds and stuff. I don't know. Consumers will be more willing to buy less costly luxury goods. differs. They're young. Where like you're lucky. But that's you know, ever thus to dead beats Lebowski, th that's kinda just the way I guess humanity is. We've got a lot to talk about, so I guess we should probably talk about it, huh? Uh and there was that. I just added this to the document. Uh if I could say is of particular interest to Alex because it's gonna involve the uh Apple's first cut at Do you call it VR? will make a joke about a thirty year old pun. Not for me, not today, but Jesus Christ and the people who've tried it. Whatever that means. Th ru ru ruin ruin ruins part of the film.
I don't I don't know. title of that episode, I've seen the trailer for the future and I've just decided I'm not into it. Phone, right? uses for things. The thing I said was like, well, first of all, yeah, if I were stuck on in a United coach center seat for an eight-hour flight, Like how many people have even had this on their head? It's a it's a it's just like nineteen eighty eight all over again. this product and the technology behind it? to realize right now and you you don't one it's difficult to know what the next thing is because or how the next thing can be powerful because we're so busy looking at something that's a powerful was and you're like okay but like I'll just stick with my PC or my iPhone.
dependable commodity high quality product versus something that's in its infancy. iPhone and iPad are probably l lo uh locked in, but d god, I I I uh uh I was really worried that I I uh I don't know, or star vision or scam. Because I thought the same thing. It's completely insane. I still think AirPods look really stupid. There's there's no greater form of uh like transportation for like what I actually require. I and again, I always I always I I I do not want to have this be a place that I find myself returning to on a regular basis, but like card per se. I guess the the part where I'm being a little bit devil's advocate is like maybe the surprising part should not be the backlash. something that is actually really useful.
on your screen, it's like, well, okay, maybe not for you. huge, gigantic screen in especially in a tiny uh in a tiny space. That is what is happening right now. So happens that the cameras need to be very close to your body at the moment. I don't know. You know, a keyboard with dozens of buttons on it. on my Apple TV anymore because I'm using my phone. To run uh run a uh uh a Unix like operating system in a shitty way. exclamation point means you don't want to mean you don't want to learn what a flashing bottle means in you know you have to learn all of that stuff before you master the video game. to to learn how to how to watch the TV, then the future is defined by a certain set of people who Quote, paraphrase, or misquote, depending on who you ask Henry Ford, and this might be the title.

Spatial computing is or I'm s I'm sorry, no no no. where your computers are just around you and you are not looking at them. It does not mean you throw away all of your old screwdrivers. W what would I use for a computer at home? You know, there's a plot line. The options around just pick up the thing near you and do it, those options have gone so far up since say the early eighties, where it was you just can't do it. Like yes. are complicated and there's there's it takes adjustments, it takes time, but like, you know, I I think it's valuable sometimes to look at something as pedestrian as that and go look at all these different ways.
precedes Dropbox, I'm guessing. Well don't you just flip that on in iCloud? All those different little things that are now table stakes now used to be a huge deal. slash wanted 3D stuff to work. Or at the most basic level, just the journal idea, which I mean, I haven't returned to it in a while because I, you know, have other things I get distracted by. I still have this thing that I want to ha be able to do all the time, which is I want the most general, some kind of an inbox everywhere. I want ridiculously simple functionality that basically lets me yell out, maybe even like a nonce word. people but like a one-off like some kind of a dumb word like if I could just yell out zigzag and then say something and know to a certainty that it will be captured into this one place and I can deal with it later.
in a way that is rugged enough to work on a bike or in an office or in a car with bad connectivity in Sonoma County. At this point, I've just fallen back on making everything go into reminders because that's the closest thing still that I've got to dependable. speed. can theoretically now be a widget on your Mac and the way that they c you can do searching inside of areas from Spotlight now. I mean, I I can't say. At least for me, the introduction of the Egg McMuffin in the 70s was a a a quantum leap forward. This is a pretty good this is a good place near my house and I I like their stuff and but it it's a little ambitious. I no. Right? And my girlfriend at the time said, We are never going rollerblading.
Eventually, yeah. I don't remember exactly, except that I really wanted her to like me, which is gonna sound weird coming from me. You know what I'm saying? On a podcast. See see you you know these things too. work there we I don't want to opse uh but the the hugging if you're gonna steal Valor it's best to not say who you're stealing it from. Although the name most commonly refers to the plant's edible tuberous root. I don't I'm not an adult. uh tell you what it looks like, but I know that it's in a lot of drinks. that it it's like when I realized how much we eat um fungi or or the like mushrooms are fungi, right? Oh, interesting. The rats. metropolis is kind of like New York City, as you know.
Because they had to build the six feet up. Mm. Uh I guess Danny DeVito and penguins underground like walking around him and uh uh doing like a little funeral uh procession. nation and now we need funny names. um skirt bot and monkey vagina in the zoo cage or whatever. without any explanation. trans, so now he's a trans what anyway. adventure time was at like it's yes I mean just I mean uh you could look at it and like watch a few episodes and go hey you know there's a lot about this that is a lot like D D and you're like yes there is a lot about No, it it's like a uh an assault on on your ears to the like it's gross. around the world as a way of g gauging like, you know, things like inflation or the way that like lipstick s sales go up during a recession.
What is the uh f for simplicity's sake, what what's like the male equivalent of that, do do you think? It's like you respond to things differently. I don't know. Hickam. Yeah, I th I th I tried to avoid But it's still worth it to keep reading those though. Yeah, yeah. perspicacious point of view. it's it's the problem with Twitter or whatever, which is an idea I had an extended rant about this yesterday. Very true. uh chicanery, you know what I mean? why you need it. you know, f famously, you know, Steve Ballmer being like, oh this this sucks. Put that on my face and never take it off, please. is like this like, ugh, you can't like what are you gonna do with that? Or a head thing where you could like s not see what's around you, see what you want to see, and have like a 90-foot TV in front of you.
I could see how watching TV in that thing is fun. But until people are comfortable looking at TV with ski goggles on, how do you imagine they'll ever get to the point where they're gonna be able to invent Python or whatever. Because I I've ex- I've had the just personally, I've had the experience of being on every side of this. Men, what if this was an Apple? PC that I built that's Jiz cooled or whatever. the the almost boring reactions of pessimism. thoughts of w why this won't w work or uh w why like I don't know. Uh oh, uh like if they if Apple decided to call it, you know, lowercase I capital E Y E. integrate it into other products for uh the uh its benefits and okay, I know they can go like both ways.
spatial audio and airpods not existing if this hadn't been, you know, a pipe dream ten years ago and then an actual electronics business or something all but like just to be able to play devil's advocate for a second and nobody really needs a devil's advocate but like I mean, I stopped making fun of Bono's dumb glasses when I found out he had an eye problem. say nineteen. I mean, the same way that like, you know, when you if there's going to be some kind of big political event and the city has to prepare for both, they have to prepare prepare prepare for pope uh protesters. in Chicago. No, I well, ran is a generous word for what I did, but you cried you cried. Oh my god. I like something. Very cool.
motion sickness and stuff. It feels like you're in the Grand Canyon, kind of, right? I enjoy watching uh media and playing video games and all of that stuff super Super cool. one day, you know, you will have like a a little laptop that you don't need to you you can just control with your eyes and with your hands because that's essentially that stuff. I don't know w w why uh okay, I don't want to get back to speculating why people don't like it, but I am excited. Uh uh that's an accessibility feature right there. was just a a blank slate that was completely just y you know, there there were uh b basically limitless options on what you could put on the screen and how you could do the tappity taps.
for the next year. You want to buy a phone. creating a way to run Debian on this. Yeah. people are saying, oh gosh, the headset looks so bleak. If it's familiar, it can be suspicious. benefit from having a Mac and using um a 2015 let's put it this way the 2015 Marco approved MacBook Pro that's a pretty old computer now in the year it was first used and never updated. It it's just, you know, the the all the things that right now probably seem so Jurassic. I would like a lighter phone one day and you know a huge part of all this. Is a good thing to know. You know, uh visiting over first time. or capture something in our parlance, to put it more generally. You know, and write down, you know, by medicine or whatever you write down one.
You could do S any kind of SCM, like to check things in and out, like whatever it is that you're doing. Ultimately the problem I want to solve might be there's a thing happening on my Mac and I want to make sure it's getting synced up. cultural adjustment to understand the place that new technology can, should, will, oughtn't have in your life. It's easier for people to make stuff or content. I alright. Cognition to completion. Something new and interesting. the remote on my TV, the way that I say subtitles on, or the way that I say what did he just say or whatever, I just I pick up the remote and I I click it and with it right next to my mouth I say subtitles on. And I've had half a breakfast sandwich because I'm not a monster.
The other one there was a hickama. He yeah, I would spell it H-I-C-K-E-M-A, but J I with uh til til um defer on on these kinds of things. Uh yeah, to fill your tiger trap with uh I don't know uh Taylor Taylor Swift jokes. Right. Wait, are you my girlfriend now? Okay. I didn't know. Yeah, the Gunters smell a little bit. Oh, this seems like a freakonomics thing. That's actually the opposite of that is the thing that makes life complicated, which is that although everybody has their reasons, everybody's response to what to do about those reasons. Whatever it is, Alex is gonna unnecessarily go into detail about in a minute. having named anything you make after a pun. has a whole new operating system, Vision OS, which is so much better than reality OS or XROS, which all of the And we're saying that because that's names people had guessed.
So much better. exactly like the original iPhone keynote because there isn't a fully formed story about what this product is for or It's it's real simple. Well, if those weren't simulated, I'm pretty crazy impressed. It was the John Henry problem. The the the thing. Which is by no means a way to say, well, air go, it totally makes sense to wear one of these vision boards when you walk around. F g that, you know, you just completely operate with your eyes and your hands. the long term excitement is the whole aspect of spatial computing. Like uh for now, you know, um you need to wear a thing on your face, but you know, it's all cameras, and uh I presume that uh That was such a big difference. to where and you know and so stuff that right now we're still on the edge about like how much w things involving S IRI, things involving dictation, things involving obviously any kind of AI, like w we're not there yet with that stuff.
You think you know everything. worry less about deriving so much of your sense of identity, self and and worth out of what strangers think about you on a plane. things like that's exc I don't know. I don't know what that does, so I don't like it. The the uh there's lots of boy that that's that's my rant. Like, talk about like the benefits of a VR-like experience. I forget what it was called, but I had software that would periodically run to let me just really have the word try do all of the work here to try to have your contact. I don't think it's a negative. Like imagine just being able to walk around and start getting to where you're comfortable with just muttering nonsense that'll be meaningful later.
then and how that will apply to you having the goggles on and being able to say whatever your version of Zibba Zabba is and that opens settings and goes right to this area. And so like not not only have I not learned it, but I don't care about it, which sometimes makes it a little bit difficult. Uh oh. Yeah, yeah. Oh, okay. Didn't he didn't he like put it was so dumb didn't he put like not lasers that was Austin Powers I guess but didn't he do something didn't he attach something to the penguins like you know, father child kind of thing or a parent-child thing. um anymore at all. to eventually have disabilities, which sounds horrible, but I feel like if you get to a point Well, I'll be thinking about it right up to the moment I'm dead.
Yeah. what not I mean design better but also working way better and like settings uh being just a a little bit better I think like that is exciting a lot of people. Yeah, yeah. You know, there's the the the ding on a lot of stuff, including of course Apple stuff, is like, well, this is not for a serious person because you can't do serious this is I've been told this about my Mac since the eighties. from source until you're comfortable watching TV. But if it sucks, if it's terrible, then yeah, the answer that does become for me, like, no thanks, I'll stick with my computer that I know how to use and have a keyboard for. Like he was a fucking baby. One of the things about which people most completely lost their shit in the history of any Apple announcement was that name.
more uh iPad like, but you know, now we are shifting a bit to the iPad becoming a little bit more mACLite like, but the technology of Try to talk about anything that will involve using the phoneme Mac. everybody needs help. Not people who are just for it, not people who are just again it, but protesting is a thing that they're trying to prepare for, regardless of how what those people feel strongly about. People get feel so like miffed about how it's it doesn't look like um I don't know fucking Lion the Witch in the wardrobe or whatever. you need those lenses and sensors right against your eyes in order to let you f focus a certain uh for it to be able to do the the tracking detection. a button be highlighted and then uh tapping your fingers together and it it's g you're you're pushing a a button like that's This presents the Vision OS presents a an opportunity to use your are um, I guess dis dissimilar to me.
That is far and away the hottest thing that's ever been near my dick. Whatever, ten years from now or whatever, I don't know how I don't know how fast this will go. In a pinch. The like mini inboxes thing, right? It was even in your adulthood, in since the time you've been an adult, I think you probably were coming of age out of time when people were outside of places like Google. Um but you take something like what we're talking about with like with the VR stuff. And it gets it. I made lots. Did you ever not lie, but I've I've never not lied. I don't know if that was racist, but you know, I probably even got the location of the title. Like like a potato ish vegetable? Welcome to Dissociation Nation with Cobble Pot and Lil John.
Yeah. You know, one goes on Mastodon and Twitter to see what people are saying and wow. Do you think it's because people like f feel or or fear like uh irrelevance? Like people are going to mock it e even more. I I two twenty, right? body as a way to interact with a computer. But I I see the clicking with your fingers thing as a very intermediate reverse scroll direction. Yeah, it's a good thing. Or it's just about the fact you've never made your wife come. I um whatever becomes the third version of this, I can't even imagine how cool and different it will be from where we are now. Sync on some kind of a regular basis because you wanted them to be on your Mac stuff and you wanted to be them and go, okay, you just subscribe to contacts.
If that's what people want to call their stuff, if if if people want to call their stuff content, that's And we just we see all these great little incremental changes. Okay, is it an animal, a vegetable, or a mineral? Oh, that must have been a wake-up call for her. There is a singer named Matthew Healy. And I thought it was hilarious. Oh s actually I was g yeah I was gonna say Oprah, but she left. He's done. strange to to me. And I yeah. Amazing. See I I see both sides. They'll put census workers out of jobs. The But you know what greater testimony could there be to how we somehow survived the name than you would really need to go back and see Um the I'm I'm so glad you can turn hay back on. Honestly, that's not the most exciting th thing for me.
I mean, if you look at it, I mean everything starts out almost like needing a keyboard. Nemosign 105s. That is a very new thing. almost like in what am I thinking of? He he I bet the Schroots had a victory. And and for for my wife whom I love, the tor story tends to stop at the point where she goes, like, well, really, you know, I I'd have to make this up phonetically. Sorry. What? That's Oprah, dude. And he's still people are probably still asking him about his funny. Yeah, I don't know. I I I agree with you though. But like whether you're ever like before we even get to like is your ladder against the right wall, yeah, you could use a dime. Yeah. Spell with a J. San Francisco. But you're from Ohio.
I don't have any friends that work at OpenAI, I wish. Interesting. Oh that's it is mmm see it's I'm careful how much you find sad in life because as you get older, like you know, wow. Will, should, can, represent a quickening in a lot of different things. Um think about the first iPhone. Yeah, oh my god, it's so oh it's so good. Where can I identify things? Okay. Huh. Wouldn't that be good for you? Uh that's see, I don't I don't I don't know these things. Little birdies that told me some things that I really well I really shouldn't even say. We know about uh Mrs. So I I don't know the answer, but it is a good question. Hmm. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. And that uh people would disagree with me, but I think that is just a rudimentary form of spatial computing.
Yeah, if you ran our sync manually or you turned it into a shell script, yes, Dropbox was a big deal because then we could stop worrying about that. We first had those cool like microphones on your neck where you could like whisper and people would hear you. Lost it last me on that one. I actually w am watching that this evening. Isn't that what loving couples do? You defer. Just magnets. Wait, w what about wait, Burgess, Meredith, Danny DeVito? I don't know. We'll we'll we'll get to it. Oh no. I'm excited to have something on my face, but I I get why that's not for most people. Right? And but with capturing something, what were your options in 1980? Shut no. Like like the penguin if from Batman, um and you'd befriend the penguin from Batman?
I'm I'm I'm uh looking at this this scene will be in notes. And we are seeing the like forget about uh like l late stage capitalism. Chiba. My God. How does one navigate that getting to know each other process and stuff like that? And uh yeah, I should have brought a red can of coffee. Sorry, did I did I did I misread Oliver Twist or is that not the name of the character in the book? This all right, that checks. There there should be a a price for uh in curiosity or or something like this. It was almost a moral imperative to for people to to point out in the same way that p there's a moral imperative to point out the extinction level event that generative AI is, where people like it was like I you know, this will not stand.
And it's for rich it's for, you know, rich fail sons. Oh woof. And and the thing is the cognition is way over here, completion is way over there. Oh sorry, f uh Mr. A lot of uh yes, Apple released a headset called uh the Vision Pro, which Like one of those like, okay, we're you know, this is called the iPhone because we need you to because you want to buy a phone. Now, does that mean there's so many things that does not mean? But but but but like okay so all I'm saying is like now for me to want to let's take the most basic one if I want to write something down Q one oh five. I stole it and watched it twice. Okay. Yes, yes. Yeah. What I'm saying is do not assume that because you are currently young, currently mostly healthy, and currently alive, that you will always have the accrue the same benefits that you've been lucky enough to have up till now being.
I give my kid I I'm so nice. What do you mean? Oh, right. People also ask, is Hecama good for IBS? Yeah, and it scarred me it's scarred me for life. Um I enjoy gaff tape. I uh I I didn't know what I didn't know about the Batman, actually. It's like, oh now this is a different time and things now they've progressed with the Blackberry. It They did it though, and they showed things. You're not a centrist. Like it you really do kind of feel Syracuse put it as usual put it really well. And believe it or not, that actually goes for a lot of things. I could type it on this iPad, that iPad, my phone. Yes, you're just removing friction. That's cool. But when we when I see people using that headset and you you talk about things like, oh, you know, I'm gonna pinch with this hand or do this with that hand or look at this thing to do that thing, I wanna I mean like how far away are we from me just being able to like It was like H I C I M M M A.
Yeah. And you know if it's your special thing and you still fall asleep. Um, but boy, I thought it was a great event. I know it's going to be controversial. I think there's a difference between like uh i imagination and like logistical s speculation. It is expensive. I'm happy with my horse. And the city is preparing for every Yeah. I like this because it has presented a new user interface. It's I'm like, why don't you just start saying chin diapers to people like mm like on a plane, like, whoa, why aren't you wearing your that's a chin diaper, that's chin diaper It's just sounds fancy and it's got a good mouth taste. But if there is just kind there's so much desperation in every commercial nowadays.
I don't know. Just rifle through your shit, you know. And uh a lot of people believe that. I think it's a it's a good question given that all of so much of their success was really predicated on putting a keyboard, you know, on a on a phone. Remember when Max for first started talking about him and the chappies and like and I was I remember thinking like I could I feel so silly going out in public in that. So we're gonna call it a phone. But maybe another way to again to repeat something I said yesterday, maybe uh but a maybe a better approach is is to worry less. I am uh also excited. Hello? I could just start making up anecdotes from people and then say I can't say who it is. I I don't know.
But the those same people who get excited about that stuff to just immediately shit on a new OS is I my gut is that probably breakfast sandwiches are more of like a I don't know. What are they doing to us? That talk about East Coast deletes. It's such a funny looking vegetable. Oh, really? Who are you talking to? She has as many as she wants today. My at the time girlfriend, which is true. What a time to be alive though. But it was more than underwhelmed. Like the people who are not excited about um a stage manager working, in my opinion, much But you know, it's everybody's got the color of their crystal about that kind of stuff. You you d the thing is the truth is you you you you don't need it.
Like just uh y in the back of your mind, it's like, ooh, could it be an i uh or it's gonna be another iPad situation and there's But we oughtn't be surprised that there's backlash every time 'cause there's always backlash. I was thrilled that Chicago did not win the Olympics big bid wrong for everyone. I won't spoil it for you, but you know, there's a plot line that involves fact fax machines in um the Blackberry movie. My wife drinks more coffee than I do. That that wasn't a thing. Are you allowed to say that? Well that's that's what I mean. But then you also got like the there's so much about Ice King, especially like Ice King and Marceline. I think that's fine. But there was some kind of a thing that like your programming volume can't be uh you your program your commercial volume can't be louder than your programming volume.
Aye. It's such a source of joy for me. No, that's fine. Yes. And this is the joke where they keep putting her with people and saying, Haha, George Costanza. Wait for a nutcracker. It's weird that people also assume that Apple, that we all know is a complete ecosystem, would create something like this and not. But I mean watching uh in watching the a demo of someone just glancing in a direction and having Well in this instance you're gonna have to learn what the reticle means again. It's gotten way better at that. I don't like the word content. I'm making coffee for everybody. Comes with a scoop. O'Leary's cow. You're one of the lucky ones. Oh, no, this is not a VR. It in the like uh what the the what is this for?
Um, and I think that's actually partially by d design, but I uh but you know, the whole vibe of folks after the iPhone was announced But and then you say you say something like that, like if you like if somebody offered to hand you either like a like a m a MacBook that you couldn't fully open in the seat. They're all that those were many many cases were ridiculous and confusing. It really does sound like like uh somebody dissociating into uh an I. Um that the anom youth is the anomaly and you will learn that, which is fine. That idea of like, you know, another way to think about it is like I remember as a kid, little kid, first learning that you can use a dime. Like where is it? I uh really like that people are m able to make amazing things on their phones.
Did you think Dwight Schroot was the leader of uh the army in World War II? I don't know what things are real and what are you. Or sorry, no, not on um Mac OS. I was fueled by my tears. We used to be able to get like sandwiches and heat them up or whatever from vending machines. Or what if this wasn't well done? Oh, you're gonna these computers are gonna put people out of order. Because it'll change your life and you can get around and fold it up and put it in a trunk and like it's not perfect, but like it's better than other options. Well, gather around chillins. People trying to figure out how to deal with sync. All those ways that are like those half measure weird, you know, in-between ways to deal with things.
I am excited for new ways to make new things. I want to be able to walk around muttering to myself like that and have things captured to a list. Yeah, when she was younger, and then he wrote uh uh then she wrote a song about him. They had they had to build a first story underneath Chicago and the penguins went nom nom nom nom nom and they all moved down into what are now considered the sewers. And it doesn't like sometimes what we need help with sometimes what we need help with is like we're we're like that kid that wonderful kid on queer eye and Just not even so much the hardware of, you know, the thing that you put on your own. Like you can, in the same way that you might disappear into a movie and forget that you're sitting in a filthy theater, right?
Well I'm glad this is a real food and not just something that uh a character from Whitney the Pooh eats. Would that be good for you? Oh. Chabot. In what? Oh 3D documentary so bad. Um yes. It's like I I don't know, it's it it's like quinoa. Q one oh five. We'll get to it. It is unnecessary. I cannot allow this corporate malfeasance and fraud to stand. Like there's all kinds of affordances that we have in our life for improving our life, like the actual the life and the and the work and the stuff that we make. Can't wait for NASCAR to come to Chicago. It's not it's just cameras on top of the headset and the 3D camera is allowing you to uh it it just It was even better when it would automatically set up or like restore for you so you didn't have to do that.
It's unfamiliar, that's bad, and suspicious. I think you are just expressing Yeah, I I love the phrase cognition to uh capture, i expressing how people might be excited or the c Mm-hmm. That was the single sexiest costume I had ever seen in my life in a movie. And then he smells because he's the one that smells, but it's it's not it's actually not the Gunters that smell it, it's him. I was having a good, happy I today's a big week. Um you uh right? I'm so much more likely to we're already talking about making plans with a friend of ours to do that for the first time ever. Mm-hmm. So new that a lot of you who are young will probably go, well, it hasn't always been like that, maybe, right? I'm like, it's for drinking coffee.
Don't they help each other up from their rollerblades? And I'm like, see, I don't even know what to say. Oh, I I I think it look yeah, like a a potato slash radish. I have m no idea. No, I don't think so. Oh, absolutely. It would be like somebody walking up to Mick Jagger and going in nineteen seventy two and going like, Have you ever found a way to have gotten satisfaction? I mean, how long have we been hearing from people? But you know, it's like it takes time for things to become things, but like we get so fixated on that dependable thing. What did uh what was it like AirPods are like the tenth biggest You can see yourself like kind of disappearing into it, right? I mean he's loving that. I've never heard of someone making themselves a breakfast sandwich, which is very s silly, I realize.
Like many vegetables, I think it's a plant. How old are you? Probably not. Which is like a kind of like, I don't know, is it kind of like a big radish or something? What I didn't realize is like what a what a like serial habit this would be over the next part of my life, which is like, you know, I I you see you learn to defer to people on things. Alex there's a big difference between knowing is it I just for just for the I'm sorry, just for the sake of our audience, there's a pretty big difference between knowing What? Where, where, where? It would be funny, like I like who's a famous rich person in Chicago? I watched it by myself and then I watched Blackberry with my family. Yes. I just added this to the document last week.
And uh and that was all understandable 'cause it's like, oh yeah, we have phones. Probably fewer than a thousand. So now on my pretty blue MacBook Air. But but no, but in that case, pick up whatever is near you to do it. Hello. No, you don't. It doesn't matter to me whether I it began with giving you the exact right name of a sub-sub sub part of a neighborhood. Fagin the Zionist. Right? But now we get uh Timon's low acid coffee in a bag. Um the uh the but the thing is you you hear that over and over again, and the first ding, and it's it's it's its own kind of ugly FUD And in this instance, I do feel like there is a way in here of saying, like, well, yeah, there are these affordances that you will find not dissimilar to other ways you've interacted.
You know, just surviving. I can say that I want. Listen, a guy named Scott Shannon invented the format of the Morning Zoo on my radio station in Tampa when I was a kid. But I you know, I imagine that's still a format. Well it it it's like spoilers. Because it would be really different if you were Alex or you were into it. Wrong. I don't know. Well, but you've already got a TV. It's just a toy for a rich kid, which the thing is, all of those things can be true and what a thorny issue that is. Everything starts with games and porn. And so luckily we got completely through the part that's about speculation about why people don't like it, so that we can get to the part where you talk about what you're excited about.
I it's gonna seem pretty crazy pretty soon for a variety of reasons to like even need to simulate a keyboard. Each one of those steps is taking out at least one and a half times its size in inconvenience. You know, one of those um kind of like little little tricks you learn. Japanese notebooks. Like they they look really dumb. Did you not know that NASCAR's coming to Chicago, Merlin? Mobile me was especially not a great way to sync your contacts with Google. This week's challenge, cover the show floor. They uh but I guess I I uh breakfast sandwiches were not a thing in my life. That's when I was escaping you. I guess we don't know. You should read about it. I don't having sounds is a good idea if you're doing radio, by the way.
Yeah. Should I be buying lipstick? Rug ruggables. But that's what we're talking about. Yes, exactly. Oh, I see what you're saying. Oh so I talk like I'm from Wisconsin. What was the joke, Alex? Oh, yep, there he is. Oh, I I don't know. There's uh s like like something in in the strait jackets. Yeah. All these sound like Pokemons to me now. It was negative. That what would the sense in that be at any amount of money? It it doesn't mean any of those things. No, a computer is like a uh it's a terminal that we go to and we use at work and you get trained on it and you get cleared and all that kind of stuff. They spell with a J just to fuck with you. I don't know. The challenge this week was to do something with WWDC Where Or Weave known or suspected for a while that there was going to be an announcement that It I was like, Well, I mean it is it is I understand all sides.
And you know, but then at a certain point, I guess, skip forward 50 years and you get to like, oh, it's computers versus everything. Um I uh I can't even do it. I could see that. I think it only does fuzzy animals. Very upsetting Victory Gordon. It's not an insult. There's all these things about we know about Wilco. Why does makeup up during a recession? I I uh I don't know. Think about the first not just Apple products, but it's true for anything, but especially think about the first MacBook Air, which like it I have no way of knowing, and I don't particularly care. Oh I have a couple dear friends. I thought that the FTC r had changed to regulate that stuff. It might not be today. And and what's his name?
But then again, what is simulation even? It's like a different world. Well, I can understand why people are busy and have stuff to do, but at the same time, don't sell that to me as a It hasn't. Hmm. And m my wife has a precision about s the names of certain kinds of things that is just like way outside of my own interest. I don't even know if they made for life, but they're very susceptible to uh to a man with with poor eyesight and an umbrella and a and a top hat and he goes They invented the morning zoo at Q one oh five. I you know, if I could say off the dome, um a woman might be more likely to say, Well, I'm gonna pick up this lipstick. B uh b uh b both, both. It is all of those things. I know there will it's also some people who won't be able to do that, but Every bit of friction that's removed is exciting to me because it makes space to do more interesting things.
Hello, Alex. Um let's see. Oh, this is not for making anything. Maybe I could save mine for the after show, but I have so much to talk about in the OS updates. You don't make coffee for everybody, you know, in case anybody wants it, you know? Oh I do underst I I understand why like a person who doesn't follow or get excited about technology in general would say that. You look at the way the little kind of like the insane way that stuff from your phone Did you make it or prepare it uh like did you prepare it yourself or get it somewhere? We can't see yet. Gaff tape. It differs. Exactly. Uh great ex I I tried to talk about this with Dan yesterday, but he mostly wanted to talk about some troubles he's having with a rug.
I mean, we're I'm getting way ahead here, but uh sorry, I'll do I'll say that thing people say on podcasts. It felt like watching like when I I watched that, it genuinely felt um I don't want to say I would love to have a portable keyboard and that thing on my head for as often as I could. Oh. People are having like the equivalent of like Jerusalem syndrome. Is there another impulse by maybe if you get another pair of truck nuts, you get double nuts. I mean I I that might be a kind of relief, but I mean it seems like kind of a Pyrrhic victory. And don't ask me what that means because I d I don't know. You got more tens two. I like immediately your attention immediately slides completely off the pizza.
And did did you try it? I don't like the word content because that I I I I I I can't because it that is the word that people Maybe oh maybe in uh what if what's the what's the movie where they first had those oh I bet it was No. Oh, it's kind of like a It's more like a tuber, really, right? Then? But also like um Ice King and the penguins. You know, you know what's br really bleak? I could yell it into the air for any of three different voice assistants. Well, I got this uh what's the name of this brand? It was a wake-up call for both of us, believe me. Yeah. People were very negative. I don't know. Aye. One that comes straight to mind for me is like, holy god, it's gonna look s in the same way that uh a Blackberry looks kind of funny having a But like setting up your phone and being able to use FaceTime on the TV, I tried it.
And it it you don't have to be a dithering liberal arts major to see the complexities in these new technologies, new practices, and new ways of wiring how we think about our life. Um yep, yep, yep. Oh don't do it. Who are you talking to? Dissociation Nation. It did look really good. And I don't know, everyone made fun of AirPods and now it's The my most recent computer that I bought I ended up giving my kid because he he's been getting more interested in doing doing things. In this case, now, like watch party stuff Oh, so you cause your computer's at the office. So why am I saying all that? Who is who is it that she's seeing and I'm making the racist joke about? The original the original uh the penguin on the nineteen sixty six uh ABC TV show Batman was played by the great Burgess Mary.
I followed this. Isn't it at all? What if this wasn't cool? I I I I I I don't know. It's as far as you know, she can't even do it. It used to be time was you had to be on a computer with the right T C P I P set up and usually like often a dedicated like some kind of a internet line or at least a modem that you would go through. 3D has died so many times. That is so such a simple thing that I want, but I haven't there's ways It's a compliment, if anything. It it was just I don't know, such a weird Well, I mean maybe most silently you're not going to sit down at a computer and do a computer thing. I'm not in the zeitgeist. Not looking forward to that. And uh but take it anywhere you want. Like that was shitty of me to do that.
Like I I it's not totally a snow leopard year, but it's Uh uh that's a for I would say that that's a form of ambient computing. But like no, because I don't need to go to a this terminal anymore to go do email. Well, if you're my grandfather, well, you're dead. And but now my options for that are endless. I don't know. You can't prove a negative. Hello. It differs so much because the way that a man I think, historically anyway, myself versus women I have known and I have known, I've got binders full of women. Um and like that's not exciting for a lot of people, but it is for me. You know, and like but then then it got an app store and it got good and it got stuff as then your iPad like no iPad's just an overblown iPhone which it was I didn't know it well Unless it helps explain your story.
We're trying to reduce to shorten the path from cognition to completion. Uh-huh. Gap tape. Yeah. And one of them was like when they come back from it's a little bit in some ways like the Steve Jobs movie, just in the sense that there are like sort of leaps. It might not be tomorrow, but eventually, if it especially if it God forbid it gets successful, you now have to live with that pun for the rest of your life. Jay Baraschel's character who's he wonderful in that. Like okay all right and you keep going on and on with that but like it's we we allied all of these like potentially really promising new ideas But the descriptions and like talking about like the tiny millisecond differences that like stave off.
Sometimes you need the I'm sorry, we're saying the same thing. How are you? No, I could. You get this and it's not very costly and he comes with a scoop and you get to make your own coffee. There you go. Oh, ew, ew. Uh but I I I was excited to be like, oh man, you can dig into the settings just by blinking rather than tapping six. I'm way more likely to use FaceTime for anything now that it's on my TV and not just So three's all really used to be not just simply separate islands, but like islands within tiny islands next to the islands. That's that's me in this whole like, uh, you're such an old man. Um you'll almost always eventually regret. The same way that the Microsoft Connect did years ago to which exactly what I was just thinking.
I can write on that. It depends on how you think about it and spell it. Okay. Oh, I I don't even know what it looks like. Oh fire of my plan. But whatever. I l I really like the way it all looks and the fact that it does they've picked a target that they could hit, which is making these planes look real. Yes. Yeah, it's O'Brien Williams. Uh I wouldn't j ginseng mm another one of those things where I could not At the height of my Q105 mania, probably 12. What is this? Uh it was the week that they were going to be announcing, uh we thought, some kind of what we what we had normally previously thought of as VR, but apparently is different than that. I I think if give me a few. Hmm. You understand on my end with the just the headphones.
That that's exciting for me now because Also we're still doing the negative thing. It hasn't had any luck yet with Bando. So bad. And no. It's it's a neighborhood. Don't do it. And um Gotham City is supposed to be like Chicago. I can't believe that this is real the not good one. That's a lot of makeup. I've got a double uh feature uh date uh with my former Uh Peter sh You know she's got a backcave. You uh pick up little things like not impulse buys exactly. Okay, I know that, but like, and here's the point I've been was struggling to make and I'm struggling even now to make, which is you're not gonna be able to build your Unix kernel. Yeah, because that's the first thing that really appeals to a lot of people to make and consume.
No, well like how about you just go watch Black Panther on it for a while? But good. I thought that was a character you created. They're cool. I don't know. And there's one of those Oprah giveaway episodes that I think is very canally Yeah, yeah. Like it was crazy fucking hot. And knowing that how many things can be a screwdriver, I think that's the penguin's real name, Oswald Cobblepot. It's weird whenever I turn on the radio and it's like in some ways it's so much like it's always been. I'll stick with my computer thanks. Maybe I've I ran track, you know what I'm talking about. And then they made it so that like it would automatically connect with your phone. You have to somebody's gonna have to use this thing and decide that they're into like this use of it.
In between there be dragons, how do we get there? That's that was a weird thing to say. It's really not good. No, no, no, no, no, no. You did it. It it was like not in uh it was not underwhelmed. The Blackberry people uh how does one does not one does not simply walk into Well, yeah, but like my wheelchair doesn't look cool. Like it's nice. What it means is that if you need a flathead screwdriver, before we even get to the issue of whether it's actually important to turn this screw, as James saw I'm uh I'm doing really well, actually. Yes. Because of course it's composited somehow and all that kind of stuff. There's also, I think, a fear I have that if the the if no one wants Yeah, yeah. There are two foods I can remember from early in my relationship were Like quinoa's just it's just it's fine, but it's just oh quinoa.
I mean, could you ask is this your disabled friends or your friends who work at OpenAI? Like have after watching Apple watch a Vision OS. They should just call it the apologius. I mean, and again, I just like I hate even saying anything about this because I understand and kind of agree with every single fucking side of this. Oh, it's gonna be something. You're doomed to a future that's nothing but faster horses. I'm glad somebody finally made a good one of these by focusing on the right things. It it knows the breeds of or tries to to know. I uh wait really. Yeah, I I really sh I'm not shitting you. But what we do is you sure you can do that. Oh, it is in the pea family. Um I like batteries uh uh magnets, just magnets.
Who are you talking to? I don't know. Ruggables or or r rugger band or something like that? Why? But that I don't think that's a surpassingly But No You don't. Excuse me, put people out of work. See, the stammering doesn't help. Uh course I knew that. Like it's not it doesn't feel so again, I all I know is what I hear from ATP. It's like it doesn't feel like you're wearing goggles and looking at a picture of uh say the Grand Canyon. So I mean I'm just trying to say like, yeah, yeah. You could always use a regular screwdriver, you could use a bread knife, you could use any of those things. And uh oh god. It's pretty, pretty, pretty cool. I just don't want to. Another one was when I I you know, because of course I didn't move to San Francisco.
When when you saw only one set of rollerblade tracks Yeah. Is the name of oh native Mexican vine? I thought it was I didn't it's not a great movie, but it's a it's a very fun, very amusing movie You did it to John Mulaney way. Like even in a demo? Can I recommend it to somebody? So you just are uh you flicked something to your TV and I mean, yes, I know you're looking at your TV Well, we couldn't have gotten so we I talked a minute ago about that ability to to capture an idea on this paper, that paper, or these fourteen different electronic ways. Yeah. There's all these things we know about Chicago. Uh oh man, that's so complicated. The on iPad OS stage manager is But okay, fine. They are. But they're they are trying.
Like you could run RSync manually. I thrive. Okay, I get it. You know, they talk about stuff like oh, what do they call it? It looked so good that they were arguing about this on ATP, like were those images simulated or not? So so I've been told I have never had one. Is that Meredith. I listen, I have I have a desire Well good news. Cobblepot. That's what it is. And you do kind of look like you're a quantanamo when you when you have most of these things on. Mr. Mm-hmm. I do not die coke. You can't just well by which I just mean like this is the first cut of this. Just listen to people who are technology professionals But but like talking it's not as hot as a MacBook Air, but but like one minute of Sims and that thing had to be open.
If people want something to be immediately excited about I could write it on my hand. This is even before we get into stuff like, you know, This is Do by Friday, a weekly challenge. What are you what are you doing with a red can of coffee? Yeah, so you know, but you you figure this stuff out Then you're gonna start dating Taylor Swift and it'll be in a big dusty. Different girlfriend, different coffee, different penguin. Hmm. Okay. Because you've got Mac, you've got Macs, you've got Macs. They they they absolutely look stupid. And you need, you know. It was nice when you could have a Bluetooth keyboard to enter your Apple TV credentials. But like that was let's just uh you know, this is either gonna sound like a ridiculous thing to say or a an overstatement depending on how old you are, but Jake Gyllenhall is still in hot water, I'm I'm told.
I just somehow have normal friends who tell me things about like normal stars. Yes, they they do use assistive devices. Now I'm thinking about it. Yes. And it stopped being the thing that burned your dick and started being the best selling laptop or like in that range. Um well think about this, like with that with sync being a solved problem. Yes, I I just think McDonald's immediately, then maybe Dunkin' Donuts, which I guess is the East Coast. And um I don't know, but this this one's good, it's pretty ambitious. Hicama? Huh. And you've heard this in anecdotes before where I'm like, I just want to tell you a story about a human interaction. It was a funny sign. I don't know if you're even qualified to be a lipstick lesbian anymore.
But like, isn't it possible that all of those things can be true? Like it was a couple years earlier and you're still alive. First of all it's on Chibata bread, so you know, calm down. He is the frontman of the band the 1975. I don't know. Um maybe here's another way to put it. But I uh I I want to make some 3D content, Merlin. I thought that looked fun. Fagan's my father. I the thing is that that's what drives me crazy. Is that considered this uh this your spotlight? All right. Is it kind of is it kind of like a uh like a It's a little like the penguin. La la la. Really? But I understand that criticism, but like it's also it's very you sound you see one imagines they sound very smart going, well that's just that's not a sophisticated thing for sophisticated people.
I mean like there was a time when even Einstein didn't speak German. Like I just I survive. I think of it as like a New York kind of thing or maybe other like big urban areas. That's that's this that's true. Mm. No the thing is also, and I think this is by design, because Adventure Time, like we'll each each and all spend the rest of our lives realizing how clever Like they're not even original Did you say to your girlfriend at the time, I have no fucking idea what Hickama is? Uh they He he made a he he laughed at a racist joke on a podcast and uh then started dating Taylor Swift. It was this the costume that the most like I went wow that that's really something. Like you get a or you go like, you know, um And if you were really into it, you go, all I can see is the upsides and the, you know, the not all I can see, but I you know I'm back to work actually.
All the blah blah blah blah. But like and no amount of us saying anything will help you with that. Sounds kinda like a like I don't know, like a drum and bass record. Like people are are are losing their minds because of Taylor Swift concert. Like K Kanye? Oh what a good show, huh? Today is today is a big week. Hickamau. Um and it doesn't but I'm not I'm not trying to play that I'm not a fucking idiot. It's just uh a big car race in uh Chicago. Like everyone looking at their phones and c not not talking. And I understand people being skeptical about the 3D aspect of this. So I hit her with a big can of coffee. But I just When you said that last week that you had friends that you talked to, several friends at OpenAI you talked to?
Well yeah, it's kinda like a the road. I would s say that this is not anyway to just to f to to finish framing it. That was quick. Yeah. The i it it is very much um similar to But that's but that's that's because it's familiar. And it's like that's so good to know that you could use a dime as a flathead screwdriver. Um and uh it's been pretty good. I'll tell you when we're off here. Anyone ever tell you where milk comes from? I'm thinking I'm going to do that. It it it ruins a bit of the uh fun. I think it's still cranking. It does not mean many things. Well, y where's your computer? Now that is not an option that we had. I would like to just be able to yell out Put on these roller blades. Is you get you keep getting older till you die.
But yeah, I don't I don't know. It sounded like you just kept saying I. No, I can't. And yeah, I'm excited to have a Be able to be able to touch your phone to your airpod. It's just make a list of that's not actually reminders. You know what? Danny DeVito. Uh d do you have an idea for like a funny name that we could have? Yeah. But like the thing that I mean I I think I was saying to Dan yesterday as we record this was um Like what's gonna happen to all those census workers? Or I vision something like that instead of you had a a dream or a thought or something that they shouldn't call it that Like, no, no, it doesn't mean that here, English. Yes, that's the problem. Because I mean I don't know if this is a bit.
I d I don't know.
