But you also don't learn anything from those last episod and I guess assuming they wanted to quote learn. Like isn't there like sort of more awareness of the inequities? Like we had an an aw awareness of yes, we all have played Pokemon, these kids probably haven't, but it's not like we don't enjoy the same To chat GPT. Instacart's a big deal in my life and it would be neat to do stuff with it. Yeah. I think I'll just stick with the Beatles and maybe Paul Revere and the Raiders. I thought you're using this shit all the time. Alex Allen, we were telling you. I don't know, maybe these analogies are ancient and mean nothing to anyone, but I don't want to ban encyclopedias because people won't read books anymore.

And like you say, install, install, install. Then you get into stuff like Notable. I I just I'm gonna throw stuff in here that seems might be useful for my Billy Joel jukebox musical. He said something preposterous like, I paste in the transcript of things and it tells me what I forgot. This is mainly one of those ones where I go, ooh, this looks promising. Or is there a specific question you'd like to ask about this file? Recdis is a podcast I co-host with John Syracuse, and the episodes are released every other week. You know what I mean? But again, make me 80% good title. Don't be general about it. How sh how how how s how tall should a person be? They didn't even make like those Benny the Spaceman I think wasn't until like 1980.

Yeah, I mean stuff like that is pretty th that wasn't really the direction of my thing. and bring this whole giant fucking army that comes in at the last minute when they're surrounded and Jon Snow's on the bottom of a pile. that the in this modern digital age, there's some way that like there's some people who just don't have computers or the internet or people around them who know how to do that stuff. And but the book part was important, like going to the library all the time, you check out any book you want on the shelf, like even if it's about World War One. It's like thanks, Grandpa. My friend and I are doing this and blah blah and I was like, well, you know, as ever, like if I can do anything, let me know if you guys want to record at my office or you want me to set it up a nice low-key setup for you to do it at your in your room or whatever you want to do.

Yeah. Well, I I'm not trying to like shine my own skirt. Did they look like Friar Tuck? And he goes, Well, why would you say that? Santa's on the ball. Uh challenge this week is uh to do things with plugins and chat GPT. Um I'll put it in notes notes notes. But like there's certain things I uh as we'll talk about maybe that I do have been doing a lot and where I want it to remember its work from before. What what does that mean? As an AI ma I or like because because those opinions are weird and blah just says stop doing all that. Uh long story short, between thirteen nine and twenty-five twenty-six five per year. I'll do that. It doesn't even make any fucking sense. Can I do more of these and then we'll leave and then before?

And like I s there's still again, it's not great in terms of documentation, but it's some sometimes it just knows to go use a plugin, even if it's not turned on, I think. for each thing you want to do at this point. Webpilot LinkReader is really good. maintain or you're work cited or whatever, right? And in between, what happens? I think it's. That's your new name. And I just start banging on the keyboard to say something like John Roderick, who's a podcaster, and he's in the band The Long Winters. That was almost a steady story. This week's challenge, plug in to ChatGPT. Fine. Uh taste. You're a regular Lincoln. Uh you might play with the Tinker Toys. for your time. And like they all went on the bed in a certain way.

Yeah, it was a cr yeah, it was one of the Aidens. You know how that is and you okay, did you did you watch Pen fifteen at all? Yeah, it's definitely got all the affectations of that era. since they were little. I know the name. who they're like, you know, in high school and there's one guy who like wants to hang out all weekend and draw comics together and the other one wants to go get his own apartment and don't you remember that feeling though of you've been on both I know I've been on both sides of that, usually as the undeveloped or underdeveloped one. But that brutality of like, oh my god, I still love my stuffed animals so much, but no one can know it, and I would certainly never accept a stuffed animal as a gift at this point.

six probably and was just you know already had c large boobs and we all participated in I I think I've told you this we we all participated I was standing in the back just trying to be part of the the group. Me. There's a part of me that really feels like it's about compliance and about how much this person will do what they were told. And then if you don't do it right, you get a C minus. And then there's other people that have me for it down. f the pandemic writ large, is it forced us to really confront a basic inequality. You had to do a thing, then you had to like record it and do all the stuff. Till I watched Pose and now I'm like, oh, now I get it. Act like you're Joe Rogan and just ask the question.

You know? And my story was called Star Wars II. I don't know, I don't go on. uh movie I really adore, a documentary about the late great Harvey Milk and one of the women in it describes herself as what? Can you fucking believe this shit? The kind the you know, the kind of like, you know, I I I'm I'm especially glad I don't live in Florida now if I'm being honest. let's here's a good place to put you know here's the we'll put the GoPro here, we'll put the iPhone there. And at this point, I think the shape of the podcast, Social Justice Project, was still, it was like like there weren't a lot of details in place yet. And like, but then Madeline goes My wife, whom I love, goes, Well, I mean, how hard is it?

sustainable parent does is to without quote unquote fucking teaching you make you become aware of how much stuff you didn't know you already know and you actually know it pretty well. Johnny Tremain or whatever. Okay, this was in kindergarten first. And you know what it looks like? If you have dull scissors and a little bit of money, you're probably not gonna buy a nicer pair of scissors. I've got the Marco scissors. di difference out of reach for some or is it still kind of like the bubble that's an that's a very interesting question that I I have I uh uh if I could answer, I do have a couple angles on. I mean we just got used to spending two hundred dollars at the start of every school year to bring in more of each item than we were asked to bring in until I got on the deal.

I know it, not all kids, but I'm just saying compared to Central Florida in the eighties, mm, kids are just a lot cooler. uh it's difficult I'm too close to it to be able to say and yet at the same time too far away in some ways to know in detail. Like you're like, oh, like when I picked you up, um, you know, Diane was hanging out with a lot of kids wearing black and I didn't feel good about that. Yeah oh yeah. I've just I I'm not good at this yet, but I've come so far in understanding you know, one of my favorite things I slipped into the document, I think I told you this. uh one of part of the crisis of empathy that we have in this country is our incuriosity about why somebody has suffered differently than we have and what that says about their character.

I am a good copy editor. But like when you type something in with ChatGPT and it starts giving you a response, it goes tick, tick, tick, tick, tick. But uh that basically it's when when ChatGPT is answering you, it's not looking it up on Google and just pasting it in. But the idea is that if you are uh Steven Wolfram Alpha or you are Instacart or you are uh Bazingo or Flandork or or Ziptac or or Clean Beam And of course, if you click on something that requires an account, it takes you out of that dumb interstitial interface and you lose where you were in the new or or b you know popular or whatever. You know, and so sometimes I'll start a new chat by saying that that thing I told you last time, I guess, where I was like, I like to make Spotify playlists or I like to make YouTube playlists.

keys and so like if you do something. Chicago Manual Style for title case, uh, you know, uh MLA nine for citations, you know, markdown for blah blah blah. The example they give on this guy's GitHub page is like if you could create someone named Pierre who always responds with a translation in French of what you just said. Perfect. Cloud is Google's LLM, I believe. I'm so the only reason I mention yeah it's like it's like the British invasion and suddenly like within two months there were all these bands that were trying to sound like the Beatles and it didn't take a particularly sharp ear to go like flashlight and a beer like look at tilted and you can drink your beer. Claude is you're very focused on chat GPT, whereas I am just kind of uh I mean, that is what I use like a dip.

whatever age you are and you just tend to kinda look at things and and draw the wrong conclusion conclusion and then and I need people to really walk through and look at what I'm doing. Most in Curiosity should have a budget. Because I mentioned Charlton Heston's character in Planet of the Apes, it knew that his name was Taylor, and then kept referring to him as Taylor. Just, you know, why would anyone use a phone that doesn't have a keyboard? This is on ChatGPT. implying 1972, how much back pay could he collect in 3978? I could do that with Solver, but I like the way I did it with this. I won't spoil it for you, but it's extremely funny. the Mario World would be penalized for each one of these viol oh my god, it's so fucking funny.

You just have to tell it something. Well, there are no good Eagles albums. generally regarded as the best XTC album or what's the critical consensus on this thing? Right. or it might be Wikipedia. Don't give me the 30% right version, but the 80% right version is still plenty. And so I need to make a case. And reading that entry in even just world book is great. But that doesn't mean we weren't trying. How does anything happen, Charlie? But when when every headline is fucking oh, this lawyer used a case that ChatGPT made up, and it's like, well When I say technology, I'm not talking about computers. And it doesn't always work. good rock. Well, okay, as far as the plugin stuff, I'm gonna this is just my own feeling at this time.

Well but and not for the past w I I know, I wish I could. And then it varies, but then the other I Wolfram Alpha actually is crazy useful. And well then what are you gonna do? and there's one called uh Scholar AI and I'm like this close to being able to just dump a bunch of shit in and have it out Yeah. Dash Delimited list. Descriptions like I Yeah, and later on I added a thing that said, and then remember, you can also just give it an example of how you want something to look. And in this case, yeah, I said like and then provide a less than ten word description in parentheses after the link. I don't know fuck all about Python. Foobar. Like it would all these things that I would never notice looking at a CSV.

You know disabled people and AI people? Um movie rattling home. And it knows that the Syracusa colon that you see is John Syracusa. What are some bands that are like these bands that I like? And I I do like some of these bands quite a lot. Try love is the law, Seahorses, etcetera Course, fucking common people by pulp. I was all set with that that thing. Where I'm like, you know what? I just uh want to mute myself to open my beverage. Like have for the past ten years been using this mute switch and it works like half the time, maybe? I don't know. certainly over time has become its own thing. getting right about this, like the size of the pie is wrong, even if the slices are right. What was the other one I was thinking of?

People who like diet drinks really like that's why the wisdom document says always have a supply of of plain fizzy water and uh and and uh and a diet code. We need to talk about side grind hustle. That line just goes through my head sometimes. Yes. this will surprise no one knowing anything about the MPU. I was practicing my be a parent. the two girls and the the premise of Pen 15 is it's about uh two girls who are entering high school, I think it's 2000 or 99. you know, love, romance, sex, murder involving these dolls. No spoilers, but like yeah, I'm not gonna do that anymore. when we went into the bathroom to hear like what girls were opening pads or tampons to like see oh who'd have it it was so fucked up.

Which of these which of these are marked people? And if you learn to finish projects in on time and finish and and put up with a little bit of bullshit, you can do almost anything you want in life. It's like the guy trying to order a steak in Brazil and the guy keeps going, say the number, say the number. W do they still have like typing classes for kids? W it's we s I unless there's a turns out about this I haven't heard as an update, is really is is really good for kids. versus my kid would use his phone for everything if he could. Here's one for you in humanities class. Maybe not the best introduction to Preytel. I know. For some reason mine were better. have taking leftover Mr. And that's something I literally did for school.

from yes what what I wouldn't know from Garden State the movie that we all thought was awesome. refreshing to you, um die in a fire. Oh, it's all the shit your parents warned you about. As with the wonderful video uh for Espanol class, making empenadas, um the I I was able to help with that in terms of like, you know, here's some stands. She puts up with more. I was like I don't know I don't go where you work and and knock the knock the you know uh r the medical residence out of your mouth. And the truth is it's not hard. But like me in particular, you perhaps might overlook how steeped in technology one needs to be today. Like, my kid knows how to quit Hulu on the Apple TV. Learning how to like it's all works together.

But everybody thinks they have expertise in things until they're actually compelled to show that expertise. thrown away some very nice cardboard and then taken it out. But all of those little things have a cumulative effect on on the kind of of the the confidence and sh and to sh the sureness that you can have about doing something that's been asked of you. And this is the the second answer to this is an answer that I might not have given five years ago, but are you more aware of the inequities? things. And a third of a brain. to do. Up or whatever you call it. That is most parents have to provide more supplies to a classroom. Fucked up. But but because obviously I you have to take everything I say with many, many grains of salt.

And it's not even simply just, oh, you had it so easy. assaulting somebody with a bong or something, but there's just something where you're like, mm, I don't like the cut of that one's jib. that can be subsidized by uh the church if there are some kids who can't afford it. I think my kid's pretty great at that. A lot of cankles. God, this is so. Scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war. Sentence. Yep, yep. The way it's the way I've read it a couple times that at least made sense to me. I am not Nicholas. Sex man with a mask on, I know, I know he's Irish too. in in he's currently in England. And so uh this is something that was announced a while back. you know, 2020. Um, and then there's plugins.

All the time except when I use a different one. Generally it's it's well I can talk about it, but okay, so just to get the pr prologue out of the way. I d I do number one, I think people are w walking straight past what is actually both useful and exciting about this stuff and getting straight into the semi-worst case scenario stuff. And I'm not saying it's just for clicks. Openai. They have suggestions uh like uh expedia and uh kayak, which are two uh travels. Well, I used Expedia and got a way cheaper flight than I did. Yeah. The way you deal with plugins sucks. Where I can just type GPT and a string and it just starts doing with with my preferred thing. wanted to enter an API key to do stuff.

Now I wish I could do that on the site. When I ask you about Prompt Perfect, you said, yeah, yeah, but I've been only using it with chat. It's it's just just so much weird carpet bagging at this point because you have to you know it's it's a little bit uh a little bit more than that, but at least they are not charging in and by uh image making program I think. Uh when you're you basically jailbreak it and I don't have any reason. And like you type Joshua and and and it knows to unlock the uh the racism or whatever, huh? Later she went to San Francisco. That's why that that is why I'm excited because you I love when you're excited. And I can't explain to you why this is cool unless you fucking read.

need to be as long as they are. And uh boy does that movie take a really long time to get going. They well something something happens in space, time travel, and they land on this crazy planet in 3978. Xmander snippet and put that in in front. And so then I took a different angle like I do and I said, how much would a NASA astronaut be paid in nineteen seventy-two? All Italian people are fictional. Sa just just saying, um the the planet of the apes really happened and uh or or just for why the earth is how we know the earth is flat. Not not the Quincy kind with bodies, but the the debate kind. c concerns and then there is the moral panic uh around it uh uh along with like the logistics. Or you'll often look cool in today's world, especially online, especially on Twitter, especially political Twitter.

Well, fucking everything's uncertain, dude. The kids are coming. Duh! You know, I just asked an ATM why I never went to college and it didn't even give me any money. the the intersection of culture and technology and society, like how we live together, those clashes have been happening for hundreds of thousands of years. person. Boy is WebPilot ever good. But the way I described it last time, which was so stupid, is the only way I can think of to describe it, which is it's it's not like Google exactly, but it's more about taking stuff that's on web pages and figuring out how to put it on your web page. Not not scraping, but in turn in terms of like it's it's almost like um you know you're connecting these pipes together to enable you know this way of communicating.

And then there's other ones that are just kind of like for a purpose. create a link you can click on to go add those things to your cart, which is cool, but what I really want is who has Polar Seltzer in 12 packs in stock right now and compare prices. benefits. did to news websites where it's like, hi, we're just gonna have all your content and now part of your business is that you just have to give us that content because we're Google. You know, on one I'm not gonna get too into, but like there's a couple different ones that do there's one called Bibliography Crossref. using uh creating plugins for chat GPT. output as an actual file for Zotero. citations and things. Good called the case. And for some reason it just didn't work in the mobile app, which is why I was like, oh this is cool.

ambiguously call show notes. But like what if my mental model for this instead became just start in the Google Doc or my text file or whatever, we just mentioned something. IMDB Credit for the production designer of Master and Commander. Etc. For each, look at me, I'm a programmer. Bloop. And it understands what I don't have to call them variables and understand that artists means the people who made the song. Phenomenal. And it totally did. code interpreter, one way it's at this point anyway, unique and different from the other ones, is you can upload things. And then I upload that in Code Interpreter and I can ask it questions. But I do have gumption to try hard. Oh, you go go right ahead. And then of course, because it's a fucking cuck, it says, remember music taste can be very personal.

That are like these other songs that I like, right? You ready? I didn't the name of it was, I think it called it Brit Pop Band Recommendations. It's getting so c it cannot write ha how am I I I'm gonna do it. Bing. And turn you up in my headphones, there will be bleed cause How 'cause first of all, Alex, you know Alex, do you know that I love you? Then you're gonna go ha and then you go and then you say dub Chandler Bing is Google or whatever. that tastes nearly exactly like the original soda. of Diet Coke. But um I don't know, Tinker Toys and then there's the engineering ones. Oh, okay. seen any finales. Yeah. Yeah. Than it is now. there was very much like this feeling of shame 'cause like you remember that horrible period in like whatever your version of junior high middle school was where there's there's girls that are six feet tall and there's boys that are two feet tall and some people have a giant fucking hog hanging out and You know, uh other there's a there was a kid at my uh my son's elementary school where his grandmother uh would come and stand outside the window and just look at him in class to make sure he was okay.

And everybody else everybody else is their actual age. I did it so much. You know, I I told you about how I used to carry the baby up to the corner every morning so mom could take a dump and shower. something that comes to mind is kids I I feel bad saying this, but I I think this is a true fact stated, is that Like for example, our kid was fortunate in the sense of being surrounded by books and book people and library and you know not book people but reading people. Something so what are the kinds of things we made a lot of? social justice angle to a lot of what my kid does in school, which is pretty perfect for how my kid is. S and there's like a new a new group for trans mask people and what came in second?

because I've learned that it's hurtful to someone I love and so I don't say it. that a more that phrase we used to use digital native that a m a a kid who is more who has had more exposure to technology than just say an iPad with games. My kid knows how to quit Hulu on the Apple TV. To just help out. And that is an advantage our kid has that a lot of kids do not have. Don't you think though that your not just your kid, but most people in a school like that are much more aware of those inequities and more just social justice was and were very active in like participating in, you know, w whatever sort of That's a nice thing the Catholics do. Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, in the 1950s, they were entirely aware of the inequities and they liked it.

But um anyways, so but uh it's just that I mean if you're a teacher, you're an administrator, staff, faculty, whatever you want to call it, like you've already got so much. three of my kids' friends? so sadly, woefully sort of disconnected because it's not that's not for me anymore. You know, the the leaving of the nest psychically, if not physically, yet, has very much already begun and it's fucking great. Uh you not knowing your kids' friends or or at least like, you know, in intimately and like seeing them, whereas School but a Franciscan school. Yeah, sometimes there are priests like around, but it's mostly a private school. Um, but but one of the things I said in there uh was I guess it's sort of adjacent to the fear and money thing, but it's like what was it?

another person really explore the stuff in childhood that was or y their youth, the things in their youth that were much more difficult for them than they were for you. AI industry researchers sign statement warning of extinction quote extinction risk. even as a consumer of it, but uh it's what I believe to be something called generative AI, which is believe it or not, right now a pretty hot topic for a variety of reasons. Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal weight. My understanding is that what it's what it's who explained this? And basically if you've got anything related to stocks and SEO optimization, you can make a plug-in. Check yourself.

At length you had just gotten them. Yeah, uh yeah, I didn't well uh j just w what I did. buttered and and barely did anything with plugins. Sometimes plugins just know to do something. Mm-hmm. gives you what they suggest. interesting ways to do prompt injection that I find and it most of it is free in like on That's not Claude. And that's one thing I admire about you. Um when you say reading, do you mean the screenshots you put on Twitter? it was able to to do all of that stuff with inference in a way that is like if you don't find that useful, I don't I don't know what to tell you. Tomorrow or not tomorrow, sorry. Since Planet of the Apes, oh actually, Planet of the Apes is a work of science fiction.

Right. live in that space in that weird liminal zone of like, well, I'm gonna act like this is true. Oh? to feeling mentally sated that generally involves Google and Wikipedia a lot of the time, right? You know? all of its uh it all it's sunny in and I'm like, oh God bl bless your soul. my responses to things like that where I I thought I had something kind of funny to say and I'd also fucking had enough. And and the voices in my head didn't hear anything back. You know, he he did go to he did take a Zoom class on osteopathic. Right now is that it's got you're in GPT-4, you are in the plugins beta, and you have selected plugins. Which it did for me. It's pretty handy. make a bibliography for this in style of MLA um like MLA you know ninth edition and then you get that just little JSON or or what's it called?

that gets us from, you know, again, over here on the the frontiers of curiosity and over here on the like the wastelands of finished But in my case, if I'm gonna have a bunch of stuff anyway, you see where I'm going with this. dying publications, you know, maybe just do a little more that would help somebody. Oh, you know what I did? So I uploaded this and it says it seems you've uploaded a markdown file, so it got that from context named rectifse209main. That's all I said. But I think I'm half an hour away from having a pretty good shhh I'm guessing. Totally did it. I'm hooking up tubes. Oh oh oh no it's holding my my harmonica upside down. I I just I uh the other night I I you know flank couldn't sleep and so he started drinking gasoline out of my automobile.

Oh my god, it's so good. Uh and boy, people people who like tab really liked Tab. Um, I liked IP. Exactly. It's not Barbies. I'd throw anybody under the bus. What uh what we're talking about there is, you know, going home and doing those math problems or answering the questions at the end of the chapter, all that stuff. And it was a funny myth, but it was still f it was still kind of funny. Which is like, I'm really glad my kid went to this high school. And so like it's difficult for me to say based on firsthand experience. It's it and it was very weird to go out into well, n actually it's very weird now. Oh, no, no, no, no, that gets a jazz break. That your all all the great kids your kid and uh his peers are just more aware of the opportunities they all have versus a Even a school like in a different part of the neighborhood that doesn't have a parent who can bring in extra curls.

Obama has declared as he leaves office, everybody just be cool. Mm-hmm. uh in college prep. You know all your kids' friends to make sure that they are hanging out with the right people who have the right connections to the right schools. I know. like what it should say next and then what it should say next. Yes. But that also applies to things like stable dif diffusion, which which is uh it it there are a bunch of just different aspects. But um I don't really want to get into all the negative. I I was kidding, but I wasn't kidding. I I w almost wanted I really wanted to try those things, but I don't know how much like I just assume they have all of my data. And to hail it and you I really want you to explain prompt perfect to me, but you see you just op begin it with if it's working right, it just begins with you saying P Air and then typing a string and it gives it back to you.

I I think it's a good thing. At least they're not charging. Equipment to deal with this world. Or bings. Yeah, I I had uh a couple weeks of mania and then just a week of so you're stuff, you just didn't do a lot this week, is that right? You know, uh not you, but you know, the idiots. Much like on the first iPhone. Reading that entry reminds me of what I know. United States, like it's it's an interesting country. You know, I mean trolling me. Um a comic finder. idea for this. I uh uh I'm sending this to you. Uh and I don't know just from uh pal at openai, but I up I just uploaded a PDF. to not have to do manual searching in D scrap D script or or you know, I don't know, who knows? Um what are some bands that are like these bands that I like?

I love him very much. Why do we all by w we I guess I mean th the people who've been using the road podcaster, ooh, behind the curtain. Absolutely. Uh-huh. salutary things that you learn as a coping mechanism in, you know, older childhood, younger adulthood. Oh oh were you nice about it? I sound like Wayland Jennings in The Dukes of Hazard. But I I I I can't quote it exactly because it's been quite a few years, but the last paragraph is something like now that the thing is Uh but those integrative things exist, but they do it. conscious of maybe why s some project or su uh something is just so vastly But that was that was the challenge. really if uh f when they first came out on like do you get API keys for a free account too um you get five you get up to five you get five five Using the prompt perfect website, you put in an original prompt and then it I might be confusing it, but I think I I had signed up for that for one day.

Yeah, just uh m mo most of it. I no, I just wanted to see distinction. Well you shouldn't make uh fun of me because I wanted it to write the anarch anarchist uh. Brian David Gilbert makes very funny internet videos and he one of his things, what was the name of the series on unflagging or disjointed? It's not like really attuned to like your account and your location. Descrip D script has done a transcription of a podcast. Um The hot one that everyone wanted to die. able to sort of get away with getting the stuffies and it not being weird because I was like a eleven. Yes, that is so true. Okay, I'm sorry. Because well listen, Pratel, like you need to get to know Pretel. Yeah. I don't know what that is.

As people know, I went to a Catholic school. No. Everything? Uh my imagination has sometimes been surprisingly impoverished to me. You can use those. I get find that frustrating. It's I wanted to use the Nintendo Switch. Just go type some words. That one neat thing about code interpreter um is it'll it'll help you understand what it is that you've just sort of pasted in. I could've I I could I could've uh uh ke kept going. that I have uh a manic attitude. Hello. Um yep, and and so what what do you not like about a mute switch?
