And he's like, you know, if it wasn't for the fans, we wouldn't be able to do any of this. Uh, I don't I was asking if Matthew and I, if we were separated, that would be a metaphor for, hey, we have broken up or there's a problem in our relationship. But there's nothing to be lost by having a chapter be a folder, and inside of a folder there's different sections and you can move them around and each one of those monads of information has a s can have can have a summary. And then on a regular, not regular, but a periodic basis, I'll go through and I'll say like, okay, are any of these ready yet? I just saw the Qone. I don't leave because of that. Like, you know, if you don't like have a habit of writing them down and you're not good at remembering dreams.

uh a max. Let's see here. He was famous for Oh White Noise. It's fucking weird. It was always intended from the beginning to be audio and only audio. If you want to get really charged up, you listen to this kind of waveform with music or sounds, and it'll entrain you. I'm gonna buzz you. speak stuff yi. Uh do you people always do that? You're blowing up a little here, are you okay? and a color and then that becomes a note card and you can view it all on I think what they call the cork board. C2 might be the OG. If you're catching up on a show, you're like, oh, I forget when this one episode happened. Back a little bit no no no no no no no. fan cams of me. Because and Billy just kept going, you want me to explain this to you?

Mm-hmm. Secret Gland, please write that down. to to to man up to butch up and to like always look at everything around you happening as something you should be frustrated and angry about because it's undermining your authority or there's just all this Oh, didn't they? The eyebrows change exactly the same way each time the dog runs by and it looks up like what have you brought me? Like those kinds of petty things that are like the COO dad things that I would never say if I was racked with anxiety. patterns. Fucking it would be more like three o'clock. pretty creepy stuff. Some things more than others, when you're listening to the atmosphere of something, it it feels a little gimmicky sometimes.

It seems m the more that I read about it, it was an interesting experiment as stereo was You know, in the same way that when when I watch my kid play in a pretty old video game, I eventually get used to the way things look. Yes, it is. People Is Easy by Radiohead were the first three DVDs that I bought in 1999. And they'll be walking around going, why why does this sound so different? The word it's the sound that you what don't you like about it? Uh what I get is what they're trying to say. that? And when she does the dance and she's has the aluminum monster thing on the But it's delightful when Max shows up early and talks to people outside and signs autographs. It's uh what Charlie Charlie would call a uh Charlie Kelly would call a metaphor for an experience he had, I think, probably with Uncle Jack.

You deliberately said separated, knowing what separated means to everybody who uses the word separate. I guess we are separated. Because on Zoom, Matt is my face right now because he was using uh he was on The Incomparable talking about your favorite show, Buffy. Like so let's say we take get our mitt and we get a ball and we're gonna throw a ball back in your your four fourth, and then we agree we're gonna meet somewhere at like, you know, 1 15 p. That was like a manic joke that is like saying like, Oh, I I got in a car crash, like haha, no I didn't like Oh man, I've got cancer. a mind view or ph eye thoughts or whatever, right? You know, whenever people try to write about software patterns or architecture patterns or what's a C two wiki.

completely unlocked and it was the the original idea behind wikis that you know it's still in there but the original idea behind wikis was like it's almost like the way Linux systems used to be mostly unpass ported to it because that was the that was the point, right? if it cost anything. you know, man in the middle stuff, things where you could uh exploits, MySQL exploits or whatever it was. little bit. I want to say I did this with Fring recently because I was such a jump into the cold water with Fringe. I'm willing to be a little bit spoiled to go in and find out like what what was that reference to or something like that? And Keenan. And then the other one that's really funny is the one where Pedro Pascal is addressing his class.

because of Billy. And so I thought I'll do some um just you know typing. like you may not see like the fully formed thing come out on GitHub, but like that's been like turning over in this little kind of rock tumbler of draft for a long time where I'm always writing down like a little thing. And I need to get better about being able to say like okay, I just captured a good line of good lyrics. Right now. quick screen grab. should probably just go back to work. Did you know that there's hi. He had a guest on that he's had on before, and I have that a funny feeling about this this this person and her work. w the the stuck part and she gets very much into this somatic stuff and gets into this idea that like of not doing it or not having done it.

textbook but like for example to say something don't don't okay let me let me ask you this question and please please say yes Merlin you're totally right like isn't it useful sometimes to realize No, okay, jokes uh leaving. I I know we're trying to avoid this, but toxic bullshit that goes on in masculinity that it unfortunately does explain a fair amount of stuff. shame is the like oh wow I really will never learn this lesson will I? And sometimes I can trace that too, oh man, this thing went away. That phrase you've heard me use that phrase scanning the horizon? Checking in feels like a good idea. in. Like, right? right now. I for you, I'm not trying to trigger you, but like for you, the whole like I'm gonna get evicted and be on the street and alone, is it fair to say that that is a kind of dreaded result?

And so, but if that is that's a dreaded result that's come up more than once, is it possible that in our minds we're reverse engineering from a dreaded result? contemplate that we then find ourselves back solving all the ways that we could end up at the dreaded result. at what so anyway that's what I've been doing. I've got I've got all the places I need, but like I need a place that's like in the old days of the Mac, although it was a bad idea to have more than system one s m dreaded result and guess what you just pulled on another Kleenex. could go wrong. W when you're done what it's for. It's almost like the bullshit people say in brainstorming meaving meetings, except true. mm not in a species ending way, but like just the usual like your brain's still going zippy zappy and I I call it the fasties.

And it's just this straight on shot of this very old, very s I'll send it to you, retriever and this beagle running by so fast it's a blur. Mm-hmm. I mean, it's really all right. That's weird. vulnerable. Like you're angry there, like why are you angry there? this entry called the Kleenex Box of Anxieties. Uh this might seem uh like a boring logistics question, but I don't think it is. tonight. But again, that's the kind of thing that I know that happens. And ask me if I love feeling that way. figure some of this shit out, but no, it's not usually not too long. uh I've given up on sleep and you just get out of bed then or do you say I'm gonna you I'm gonna knock the door down? Uh, how long does it take?

It's so like I can either like sit here and be mad when I take the kid to school, or I can get up, start trying to have a day and say to myself, look, there's a window in the afternoon where I might be able to take a nap. For break, right? Oh, I love that. uh so that when you listen to it you can hear it in all three dimensions. Uh I don't know if this is true, but supposedly it's literally recorded with microphones like in a mannequin type head. That's well and a that's uh a part of it. I I don't know if that's what it is, but that's why I get confused about it. uh by neural audio because it i if it's recorded and i it it's both the recording of it and how it's played back By normal is a method of recording sound that uses two microphones, right?

Commuter headphones you wear around with interesting features. You know what I mean? Like you can really screw this up good. It does do that. what this is. Things are panned so the first Ramones album, I don't know which is which. Uh-huh. to Sergeant Pepper the the r what was it, the remix or the and that fucked with my brain and was like, oh, oh, hello, hello. Here's four different ways or five, however many different ways that you could set this and you get to hear what each one of these sounds like next to each other. Sort of like, okay, for example, like when you go into your settings for AirPods, Macs, or AirPods Pro, you can do you want spatial audio on? Okay, we're probably not gonna get that here.

I know there's a difference between Atmos and and Dolby and I but I I just don't I just don't know. I I s I d I don't want to be the person who talks about the fucking Apple headset, but I am really excited about what Apple continues to do with spatial computing and how And then you hear somebody knock on the door and it comes very like distinctive distinctly from the side. Whoever the guy is, the Wes Anderson guy. Um anyway, so I but I feel like such a hillbilly about this stuff. it's a different speaker, like which is fine. Do you have AirPods pro pros, the little um it's made it sound like poetry. No, but in the in the way the transparency mode works, I I love transparency mode. I almost wish there was a way to lock the buttons.

some ways. They're all recorded with the SM seven Bs, which I I think Marco's a little bit h uh har hard on not hard on like a little bit tough on uh how bad they sound, even though I do Do not enjoy them. I know I'm bad and that's but I kinda mm sometimes I like it. uh r recording in terms of m mic technique and how people um like you you watch videos and people are absolutely wild with th the mic and I find I I guess like the Joe Rogan-ness of it, and maybe it's because I am used of whom move right is right of home but I don't I think I honestly don't think about it very much. amorphous blo uh and and not not just you you look nice today, but sort of any di mm podcast I listen to for the first like You you know producer Ben is in a another area, or at least in in my mind.

I pick it up and Scott and then Adam both start peeling with laughter because I have just, it might, I might as well have put on a giant foam cowboy hat and not change my experience. expression. than you meant it to be and that benefits you while you're recording, but it harms your listeners because if it's just audio, when you're recording, you're all in the same place. Then I Well, there's something out there that's interesting. I'm oh there are there are a couple of things. Yeah, if you like it and it works, that's good, but I this doesn't feel but you know didn't want to talk about that whole class of like binaural beats stuff. Is that a is it really a good afterdip? that show. time, you know.

Well, I mean it's not gonna be weird unless you make it weird. separated? on a very long um d dog sit, aka like m being in hospice with a dog. If you are literally off-center. But I think are obviously. Is how I feel right now. that there were so many options for doing things. I'm not criticizing it though. expressly, deliberately, and then chose to kind of back your way into writing. You know, there's something there's these patterns that keep reappearing, and it reminds me a little bit of like the C2 wiki or Right, like your email account wouldn't have a password because why would you need a password? MediaWiki. Which i is interesting and cool. Because of the I mean, I don't want to get wound up in this, but uh um like a lot of us have said for a long time, spam would never have existed.

somewhat ironically through uh what isn't open source I believe but fan uh wiki which yeah some of them are how easy it was to constantly there's a constant evolution in the ability to take openness and the idea of like people being able to contribute things and then Oh now pay attention, rewind. I'm sure this is very interesting to a 15 year old boy. Something just happened and the very second that you just realize something happened that's a moment of unexpected and perhaps unwelcome truth. Two different things I I can think I think you'd enjoy. Where whatever whatever Pedro Pascal is daddy means, that's all that person does. Phantom? reset here. Does that make sense? I don't know if this is anything.

Liz these phrases you press this okay that I'm talking about this is this too weird No it's not no no don't just be my friend be a person who who makes money from a show is this too horrible and boring School That's fine for Merlin, but it's gotta be fine for me too. Bring back sincerity. the text fileness of this, but I think I would benefit from being able to understand, okay, there's four of this kind of thing, so that feels like a category. result of things and then again after that I kind of realized that it can be both and now this I have to be honest this polyvagal stuff and the somatic stuff Uh my like it's not just a mental health thing uh for a friend of the show. when he has uh because he has like a a vagal disorder where if he laughs too hard, he just passes out.

thing is that she does a lot of stuff and she's very able and but she's not she's not using the word doctor. Doctor. What this person said was a lot of things that we call mental illness can probably be written down to other kinds of things that are adjacent to mental health or emotional health. That's your whole life. A little bit of parenthood, a little bit of cousin, a little bit of sibling thinking could make this useful. nice to me or something. that I could do myself and cost $2. So I started thinking about the wrong emotion. And we're always fighting the last war, and all these things start to feel very related to each other. In a wiki style, I can sit down on the main like page of this and say, X thing that I did, that's weird, is uh is a an anti-pattern.

Okay, so like and being found out. receptacle for vulnerability, to to create a place where like I can be real about this with myself and explore the things that are dreaded results. Is that all I know when I'm anxious, all I know is that there's something out there that's my undoing and that it's already begun. In the old days of the Mac, it was a bad idea to have more than one system folder on your Mac, but you could do it. system folder. Sometimes a great notion. if you like this blessed area, or for example, like you could just think of it as lanes. we this is uh built to burn. Like all those are those are so fucking real, but it's like and so then what? being a little bit angry in a while.

Okay, well guess what? You know who loves being told to calm down? And then I started realizing there's actually several things that happened, some of which are kind of odd. like an unusual for me, like weird sex thought. Right? And then when that thing's gone done, I can probably expect the next one. I want to talk about the blessed stuff or like where stuff goes, where text starts. Like I have very specific needs in life and I this is the year I stopped feeling shame about but no no no no no much more specific mu no no no no don't worry much more specific like I'd have to go to Europe to find this Yeah, like when falling asleep? Oh that's so sweet. But like I I can nap, especially if I've been practicing napping, and napping must be practice practice.

Like we weekends are bullshit because you need to prepare for the weekends. And did did you peanut butter? I I guess it's kind of like what we think of as surround sound, where s different speakers can create the illusion of sound in 3D space. you know, Dolby whatever five plus one or whatever. It did actually didn't seem as interesting as a lot of Dolby Atmos. And I thought, uh, I'm probably doing this wrong or I'm deaf. But when you see those ladies, they'll sometimes be actually talking into the ear of a mannequin while they eat celery or, you know, put on gloves or whatever. I don't uh I think I'm missing something. l like um mimic the uh binaural audio. Um, I like them a lot. weird and like you're generally not like aware of that when you're just listening to music because they just try to make it sound pleasant.

you know, the the sound, not even necessarily music, but the n noise is going around your head. I don't know. The first paragraph of the histories not first paragraph, where is it? And and then of course, ooh, I immediately jumped into Apple Music and it's lossless, but not anything else. Focus more on what's happening, you know? Slash not great. Just having um I I just had my phone playing Mythic Quest and my headphones on. video games in the other room. Like with rolling around on the ground and doing things. It it sounds like it. Oh. I think we've talked about this. uh Rushmore being the first Blu-ray I ever bought Moonwatch. A difference between those those two models? kind. It I oh god it's it's perfect.

They're really weird looking and they're so big, but they're pretty flat-ish, so you can you can lay down on your side and they don't they get in the way less than other headphones. Sucks. nuts on a audio podcast. I I actually like find that in endearing, uh, bad um mic technique, and this is probably my own bias because I know that I am We're gathered around um an awkwardly small table with Scott at the head, like in the middle, and probably Adam on the left and me on the right. It very abruptly pivoted to video. recording. Like there's a very funny bit in uh one of the video You look nice today's where Scott's starting out this bit. Which is a 1,000 milliliter, a one-liter beaker full of iced tea.

it in what's happening and what has happened. Casey Newton, I don't know, the guy who does platform and uh Kevin Bruce of the New York Times, and they took the he he so so do I. I What about sunglasses? Oh really? the there's math involved and there's a lot of like listen to this YouTube video with headphones on because it's got gamma or beta. I guess it's some kind of like a a sine wave at a certain frequency. Like a I don't know like a woo-woo woo woo woo or a woo woo woo woo you know what I mean? Like holding the ibuproof into your forehead. I'm sorry I forget to record. Oh, I do. This week's challenge, listen to by neural audio. And and what happens is they went to the troubadour in LA and did, I think for one night, staged the episode that includes the play in the episode.

Oh, is Snow on the episode? mean thing I said that clearly affected you in a way that I did not expect. You explode the ball with dynamite. And I'm uh I I don't think I'll stick with it forever. for the what is a monad of information? Yes. Then you get into stuff like w what would you call Notion and what's the other one that a lot of people like that's like Notion? you know, with index cards, but he could and uh something I totally understand was like, well that gives me unlimited freedom in the physical world to reorganize my thoughts or my writing however I want. Right? Oh damn. Like it's always sunny and yeah, like some of some of them are isn't that made by the Wikipedia people? You couldn't you couldn't there'd be no point in locking everything down.

you know, screw with that to be able to like sell Chinese Rolexes or whatever, right? That little jumpy zoom. is the kid saying, Well, I I definitely know about you gotta break some Greg's to make a Tom Lit and and something either Tom Greg or Greg Tom. Like daddy. into fandoms or if it was my brief diversion, but I w I want to hear about your anxieties. I mean this is not really like a ha ha for public sharing thing because this is actually something I'm I'm kind of trying to do. looks like. Yeah, I I yeah, I I need to get better about my use of tags because I think it could actually be really helpful. that I've been learning more about as much as it sounds like, you know, witch doctor stuff.

There's a phrase that Roderick and I use that is is actually a thing, the category error. It's a kind of error that's difficult to detect because often the category I'm just gonna look up to this definition. or that you're separating. And I was thinking about the wrong emotion. feelings are real, it doesn't mean they're right. Sometimes if I've been incredibly anxious about something, I've noticed this over the last year. You feel first obviously some sense of relief, followed immediately by well, let's triple check and make sure that I should be relieved, right? Which is that sometimes when I'm my most anxious, I can be my most kind. I should feel, I feel should, I'm sure shoulding all over myself, but like I I f I think I I would like to be a person who feels relief and a little bit of Because an antipattern.

And an example of checking in that relax ref that that reflects um the pattern called trauma pools or the category called trauma pools. I know this is l l like having a a place for the forks. being delayed. Everything in here is ephemeral. any more than, you know, when you print out a million copies of Time magazine, the invoice for that is not nobody cares about the invoice. Or perhaps more saliently, to be able to go like, oh, I see anger is anger is a kind of emotion. And I I what I'm trying to get at at length is I'm probably not, I'm gonna say this in a really nice way so people will like me, I'm probably not the only person in the world that unintentionally confuses cause and effect in life.

Greater than 40% of the time when I'm falling asleep, I can expect certain things to happen. Wrong with that statement. Oh, let's go. You can't the whole point of testing the bathwater is to know if it's too hot or too cold. Came to me, I was like, oh, so if I can anticipate this, I can integrate this. Why the fuck when I'm falling asleep does some completely like not sexy sex thing occur to me? And then I discover it's not wasn't never going to happen. So anyway, that's all of that. Fuck oh my what were you guessing? Does it take you a while to get from I'm going to bed? That's what they say. stay up and it becomes a that's that's a really good way to put it. Well well, what w what you called r uh re rest, but essentially for me, I am always trying to prepare myself to r relax.

I don't have a formal way of doing it. questions because I do want to know the answer. Oh, I should have put that in in the after show. that has what claims to be binaural audio. So uh binaural audio is supposed to be a way that you record audio uh Something is in the south at the south of the room being recorded, and uh you know, it's it's not stereo and just stereo. I I don't I I don't I don't know, I guess maybe part of it is also just all these years of hearing, no, no, that's not actually what it is, has made me like I don't really exactly understand. feels like it tickles my brain in a way that I can't describe almost like ASMR SMR, right? So in theory, all um m uh all headphones that can listen to quote stereo have the ability to are smart and can tell like when I'm on the move, when I'm laying down, when I'm like sitting in one place.

Which is we're going to give you the right mix of headphones and ambient sound, but and also maybe like slightly treat. I've I I know what you are talking about, but I've never tr tried it out. the ambient sound so it doesn't interfere and in difference and that that's a pretty clever idea. uh me, you know, g getting h horny once again for all of Apple's audio stuff, but we had a challenge a while ago to listen But I kept going back to even um let's let's see, there is I think there's an ex uh like quote example of binaural audio on the Wikipedia page. And even that I'm like, okay, yeah, I get it, but the that's just basically to me sounds like I mean with all these things, the reason like all right.

And not just spatial audio, but do you want head tracking in the spatial audio? I only have a way to judge those things in context. Um it is interesting to occasionally just go in and say turn it off and like listen to it. I don't know. played with not even necessarily m musically but just stay oh look at what we can do now and look at how it can it it seems as if does this, but th there are a few where um you can position certain soundscapes li like it uses that spatial audio head tracking. And I figured it was just because I'm on the free version. uh m a marketing term sort of more than I it th thought the same way spatial uh audio is or I y it makes me Oh shit, I forgot to be recording. accurate some of the spatial um like the spatial audio is on Apple TV shows specifically, like listening to mythic quests, like uh Down in the hole when we first but there's something the way he talks, you can hear that it was recorded in such a way that like it's not close mic'd.

Stereo mics recording, I guess. I just remember when the Squid and the Whale came out, I was like, that that man looks like Adrian Brody, and for some reason that made me like him. had until and I d I really don't know why. But I don't I'm not a fan of how podcasts are mixed anymore with the weird. t ten years I did was just, oh yeah, the these are all um remote recordings and these people are just in a almost like a a you know, in advance for a talk that I did. Like I don't need I don't need more people like because if you hand people something, they'll look at it. Hard fork does that and it drives me a little bit bonkers. Sometimes you'll hear about entrainment. I promise I can read mostly.

You I think you don't think I know what a metaphor is, and now I think I don't think I know what a metaphor is, but I want to know what a metaphor is. And uh if you haven't seen it, you know, maybe you will someday. Oh my god, is this a reference? to how like I was um quote living my tr my truth not on uh podcasts fucking mark marker mark fuck marker hey what really What really what? Capturing and organizing a potentially large set of information about something you care about, whether that's your anxiety. different ways like cardinal, ordinal, orthogonal ways of looking at whatever you have here. And there's a s there's so m endless number of ways that boy that can be neat to have a non-destruct, I don't know if I'm making this clear, but like think of it this way, why didn't Nabokov write his books on index cards?

I don't know, but that makes sense to me. There's something made for everyone, like by everyone. And that's why I think that's partly why we get I get so much recapture stuff on just the most trivial things these days. It's I I think it's also kind of uh like a self-awareness zoo zoom tube. Is this AI? And then I found myself thinking, you know, there's these when I when I'm and I've been having a little bit of a tough time. I'm thinking back not just to, you know, twenty twenty-year-old Alex l lying on the floor having, you know, groaning like Tina Belcher. six year six year oh holy crap um and how I don't think that any uh thing you've said that has been uh I don't think you've ever said anything that could be perceived as overly vulnerable that hasn't helped someone in some way, hopefully including yourself.

Mm-hmm. Like let's say you start with something as simple as, is there a page for anxiety? whatever gland people m uh use to astral project or or whatever. Right? You know, you you did the thing again. Okay, what are you anxious about? Right. over my skis, which I finally learned the actual real meaning for last night on Recdiffs. Siblings, cousins, children. And and here's what what I think these things and so but okay, so first of all, you know, I'm not saying you do this, but like if you realize that it's okay. Family of the Daleks. An anti-pattern is constantly checking in. end up sleeping. In a related way to the way I can like remember certain locations in dreams that reappear. Or not. Challenge.

Audio? It doesn't seem like there's a consensus on what is or isn't a binaural mic. And but do you feel like you do? listening preferences are what you're w like just it's I I almost had uh to like bring in uh the m Marco canon which sensation for the listener of actually being in the room with the performers or instruments. I have um I have also had those the the Sony headphones a lot of people like the WHM models. right like loudness or rock or voice or whatever but there's also a really wild thing where it using a a 2D image they say like basically do you want where do you want it to sound like the sound is coming from coming into i existence and microphones were uh being developed and it was a gimmick that continued to be Mm.

Uh Bruce Willis. odd, unexpected features of these deeply overpriced headphones is I'm not worrying the right sec, but they're they're they're flat-ish viable and also the best AR product that has ever been. The way that this podcast is recorded is via my uh horrific mic technique and I am terrible at m mixing and trying to get mm better at it slowly chipping away. Um and I realized though that this the way that a lot of I uh like remember when um I think it was You're just talking about like how you record Oh I'm saying how I record yeah like literally how um it The visual part of like what it looks like when they're recording. there would be a l live episode or even something like blank check, which I is like the I guess um I do not like recording audio podcasts where I can see the other people, either live or unless it's a video podcast.

the rhythms like you know uh that supposedly correlate to patterns in your brain gamma versus beta and like if you want to sleep I mean it is the year of funny voices, but this makes me hard to read the viscosity from the voice. Um I feel uh I feel kind of just a little bit off center, but not in a bad way, not in an unpleasant way. And then like there's little boy, but he's not really a little boy. I think. This weekend I started making um uh a used obsidian to start making a wiki about my anxiety and um it's been real interesting. Uh, but the canvas thing in Obsidian? or tools for creativity or minimalist desks or whatever it is. Um, there's all those kinds of things. personally privately about you've heard me use those phrases here that keep coming up again and again related to anxiety you know like by the Wikipedia people has become most people's idea of what a wiki is, understandably.

Um, but so so I love fandom. Pop. It's Tom Daddy. I don't know what Korcor is yet, but oh that that's this a game in Summer Wars? forty, thirty minutes ago, twenty-four minutes ago, asking me why I was off balance. Interesting. actually write something substantial and that's harder. It comes in the in the wake of things like The Body Keeps the Score. A lot of what sh I'm not I'm telling you what I heard this person say. And it may perhaps a version of your ladder's not against the right wall. For for example, treating abstract concepts as though they had a physical location. He wrote the moral animal and why uh Buddhism is true and just the the like, yes, all But also because of the way, and you can like this or not, folks, but sorry, this is why we're this way.

Well first comes em embarrassment and shame and then of like oh that was stupid. A good idea or not. Well, you know, checking your inbox, whatever that inbox is, that's a form of checking in. You know, there then I got I got an interesting here just called I forgot I don't see it right now but it's called something like something I said to Syracuse of the Kleenex box of anxieties. And what I realized was this doesn't always happen. When my body has been tensed up with my shoulders around my ears for four days because of something I imagined could happen. Either parents, children, or siblings. When you have uh the fasties, the sexies, then the tinglies, how damn it I'm gonna use this. Mm-hmm. prep for sleep.

have a Sabbath suddenly. I mean I so there's the things like how do you like it's it's really kind of analogous or related to like how do you remember dreams? So like an instrument would be recorded somewhere um in the back of like the let's say you're facing north. Because I I I'm gonna end up sending me like listen, tell us what we are wrong about this because I still can't uh it's so very much like the hi-field. Do you want to sound like it's coming from behind you? Feature that in the same way that your headphones need Dolby Atmos to feature Dolby Atmos. listen to uh any sort of ANC uh any sort of noise canceling headphones until the AirPods Uh no, no, I didn't even know that he ever worked with oh, huh, huh?

to the I guess relay FM switch on uh sound or even back uh like the the twit sounding t um s stuff where I very much prefer So we don't really have we have to fill the air until the important people arrive. that that that's the thing about I I mean, I never I I I listened to that show and was like, these are podcast metaverse, like this potiverse of these people are around each other but not around each other. my one of my exceptions of I really love the presence they bring. um you won't cause confusion in your listeners. creates the thing that, you know, you and your audience enjoy. I enjoyed it's a tech podcast. Why do you think I don't want the answer to that? Do you want asking? And like draw what you will, what that says about them, but understand that the less that they know, the less they think you should know.

Okay. mental masturbation and think conceptually about some of the stuff where I can write freely about it in other places. Robert Wright has a similar uh bit where I I think he's Oh wait, I know him. Men have not been, in my opinion, this is just my opinion, men were not raised generally to have a wholesome relationship with feelings in general, what theirs or other people. Because but what is that? Um other ones, my undoing, right? And sometimes it's very useful to have things like index cards or a mind map or an outline or a notion. And it's like, well, okay, well then what's the cart, what's the horse, what's the cause, what's the effect? Like an Yeah, so it and what people do. And it was really helpful for me to learn to realize that, to learn that, to accept that, to integrate that in a way that it became something that I just thought I thought of the same way that like I'm gonna love this concert, but first I have to go through security and wait in line.

So are you angry at yourself after the No, no, no. But like I I no no it would be I think it makes more sense to say oh I'm angry at myself and of course I'm angry at myself but no the primary source and this is exactly the kind of thing I hope to tease out in this dumb wiki is like no no no oh you're confusing things you're confusing a lot of things So if I say, well, the parent of this is, you know, um these patterns. But how long does each of those periods l last and then a afterwards? Oh, okay, interesting. And a regular 12 ounce. You know? Who has kingdom? Uh b b both. Absolutely. Just I've had a lot of caffeine. I feel so bad that I always end up sounding like I'm slagging scrivener. But that it's something you can program to to just pound every server in the world.

Yeah, it is really good. wholesomely, but like I've been having a little not a kind of a depressed time. I've been very tired. And and it's all very conceptual and I thought I would give myself a place to do something that well, to use use a phrase from the wiki, an anti pattern. And I was just thinking about how how did this get how do I bring this back around? But like like in that case, procrastination is something it doesn't actually sound not that far from something I used to say was like the problem with procrastination is you know in your heart you're not gonna do it, but you still have the residual bad feelings. Right? Right? Maybe, like you say, it's okay to feel a little bit of of not abject embarrassment or humiliation or shame, but to feel like, oh you.

I hate it. Oh yeah. Ought and I be able to know where uh a realization about a uh a potentially important connection goes, that needs a blessed place. Like that's useful for a lot of things. Whereas there was the the the Fasties at some point sec or usually second, third, fourth in the stack, then I will have a thought. because uh the the the whole s sleep thing, like I'm I'm not even prepared to I think I said listen to binaural audio. But the when the mixed thing is, the uh part of what inspired this, not just Hmm. I'm looking at why do I He co-wrote Steve Zassoo? Um I see it's funny because like I I feel like there was a time in my head where like I liked the idea of slightly panning two voices left and right, but in practice it always kind of drove me.

It's not meant to be held like that. I I'm trying to think if I do. Like i it as if I I I'm trying to explain. physiology that gets you from a wave sound in your ears to actually literally changing quote your brain's waves? That's the end. Anyways, uh why was I saying that because that was sweet, and I forget why I was saying that. Um something powerful, how context is powerful. That's where tech starts. No no more witch doctory things because mo I I I am trying to let in let Les poison, but uh mutual friends of ours have come forward and been like, oh yeah. And says procrastination is not a character flaw, nor a sign of weakness, nor a sign of leg. Trauma accumulates and leaves you vulnerable in that one area.

Mmm, what uh what do you mean by that? When I'm laying down, I've now I am, I would need to be vulnerable. And like but you make a deal with yourself and if you can't, it's okay. But you have to make a deal with yourself and you're like, well, are is this just how you're gonna be for the rest of your life? And on early Beatles records, when they would turn um Beatles mono albums to stereo, it was sometimes a really abrupt, like the drums would be completely on one side or another, really Like it would give me a headache or dialogue. Um or like I'm thinking now about in Fantastic Mr. Is it Stan? I was the first person. Uh I actually I take it back. No, dear God. No, this is a little bit more. There's always something valuable to that.

One of the questions is name three movies that came out in the last five years. You have anxiety and a wickie about an anxiety, and I don't know if you intentionally went Oh yeah, something about anxiety. The the the basis for that anxiety, right? There is That's why I made a wiki about it. Does that make sense? Is the blessed place both for uh uh future reference or is it more just the practice of And this, I don't expect this to turn into the library at Alexandria. A moment where I let my guard down, physically and slightly emotionally relax and intentionally make myself vulnerable or find myself vulnerable. And maybe that's a big pattern that once you once a vulnerability is created, you're getting closer to the person that you want to be, but it's gonna hurt like hell while it's happening.

But the idea is like to get all the benefits out of your WHM headphones, you're you need to configure some things. Really? Oh gosh. Ooh, uh what do you Oh I see what you're saying, but it's we're so used to hearing it. And Pedro Pascal's addressing this class, could you please stop making what they call fan camps? So um I had set myself this weekend to put aside a little bit of time. Don't say you've lost it when you mislaid it. But back then you could have a system folder anywhere. So I as soon as I realized that all of those invasive thoughts were coming to me, or those unexpected anyway, thoughts. But like so sometimes, but it comes with this app that is weird and freaks me out. Yeah, I'm gonna oh gosh, I forget what uh it was.

It is. I think. Hmm. He was he was in one flew over the cuckoo's nest. No no no no no no. She's a therapist and obviously she's got a racket. What how do I categorize what it is that's happening here? Like the thing that I can see and the thing that I can so fucking feel, the most intense thing, I'm so angry right now, or I'm so I'm so sad right now. Fucking calm down, man. But mm mm, I I think that conventional wisdom adheres to m maybe neurotypical brains because once I am up, I can s Okay, well I'll save my obsidian questions for that as well. podcasts sound now I really, really don't like. But be very can't help but be focused more on the video component of anything than the audio component generally.

I gotta figure out how to get my vaults figured out. I I just hope it's not too as as they say cringe, but no I'm fine with that. They say there's only two things you should ever do in bed. I got do you do you cling to your live laugh love pillow while you're reading a boring book? And but he is mainly a he's been a producer on lots of things and a writer. It was so funny that I suddenly picked up this joke-sized glass of drink. Oh, oh, I see what you mean. And in the class like, oh yes, but you're daddy and bias. You're never going to answer that email, but you haven't given yourself permission to just delete it because that would make you a bad person. Okay. It was it the the the caption for this TikTok like Twitter video was something like I heard that the new the new cat or the new dog was gonna be calm.

God damn it, I gotta make myself go to sleep. That's where I unintentionally almond-buttered because there doesn't seem to be a consensus about this. It's a part of me that I just, I don't know, not a scam exactly, but I feel like I'm maybe I'm just not getting this. And you or actually I'm sorry, it's not Keenan, it was Bowen Yang. I find it interesting, mostly because I have something similar, um, which I just call my yeah, I'll be right back? This is all in the pile of I don't know if this is a thing yet, right? And but but so there's like like these phrases that keep sort of coming up. But then I thought, well, I it would be interesting to start writing all this down because and this is why I started talking about things like Notion and all those different things.

And like you just need to get that up. What the name for this? And then where do you c capture all of these brain bits later on? Mm-hmm. And notice there's a lot of adverbs like t typically is is used a lot throughout this entire Wikipedia. I know that when I when you hear something cool, it's neat. Oh, yes. Oh. Mm-hmm. Hmm mm. Mm-hmm. But then a f a funny thing happens when I get relief from anxiety, whether the basis of that was A pattern is something that tends to work in a context, and an anti-pattern is something that seems like it should work in a given context, but actually might be damaging, right? Like you you just start c the cause and effect thing becomes so horrible and then that becomes this viral thing you pass on to other people.

That's why I say that I have uh g given up on sleeping, because I know that I probably will always do sleep wrong, but what I am focusing on is Do you that's what a date is. But I prefer dynamic. That th that is how it always is when I forget to pause a drop box, which uh dropbox Don't you think? In the play. It makes it extra weird because I uh what makes what extra weird? I could be wrong. I'm talking about m b how it is the vulnerabilities that I have that have nothing to do with Scrivener and the people who make it can cause me to spend so much time thinking about things that aren't producing. What what am I looking at here? Like whatever those things are, they're all in the service of getting to that final thing.

And I was. Wait, I need to oh oh the doc oh I'm I'm having a little a little baby diet uh d Dr. Oh. Yes. Because like I feel like no matter what I say, you you instantly make it incredibly weird and obliterate any response I have to what you just said with what feels like a bout of extreme madness. So I mean you could s for example, there's nothing to stop you from making a mind map, right? Yeah. You get a sudden jump and then there's a 10% zoom jumpy like manual zoom in on Kendall while he's talking. I do one more is related. Yeah, because b the ting after the tingles you tend to fall asleep, but you've been pro as you're like processing all of these things. I recommended them to my wife. It's a lot of it just actually really does sound all the things better or interesting or different or but I like Wes Anderson is uh Stan Weasel.

It's so heavy though. Ugh. I believe so. C two. Fuck cra I'm uh I I fucking love Hamilton. But she's I understand what she's saying. And so like right like something happens and I'm feeling a very strong emotion, but it's probably the wrong kind of emotion to be feeling now. If you have OCD or anxiety, the thing that you're anxious about, you feel like you need more information. For all most of my life that's been very concerning. Yeah. Has he said like uh does he he just, you know, like eh, I don't I don't like it, or is there a an aversion to it? I'm glad we got a PS4 so that we could spend sixty dollars at a time on impossible decisions. And I and I can hear it. Well, like it is normally like foreign effects.

Like when you say things like this and people don't know what this is, like it's not a big deal, but like that's because someone's holding up a a thing or because you notice Who there? You are not so smart podcast. Well, it's hard to explain, but it's kind of like X and Y and X sub Y and so forth. I think I'm loosening up a little bit and I'm feeling a little bit of tingliness for some reason in my torso usually. I realized, I think, a funny thing. Mm-hmm. With binaural audio over the years, I feel like the thing I keep hearing is no, no, no, that's not actually binaural. Like it is able to, I think they call it, it's a name of something like Sony 360 or something. I want to say his name is. You you took your um special lady friend to Rushmore on one of your first dates, and I have a far less romantic uh story of Yeah.

I'm sorry. Oh no, no. Right? It's but you know what, it's not flashy. Well that's a lesson. Oh, what do you mean? Oh god. Yeah. Yeah. The same way that you realize that you might hurt your hand a little bit to test the bath water, but you'll eventually get the bathwater you want. That's just a thing I gotta do to get to this other thing. I'm I'm still prepping for um r relaxing. It it it they're accounting for like what's happening in the room and the way it's recorded, which I'm guessing was probably just done with You're fucking sociopaths. I have the same problem. Oh Is that what you people do? We are literally in separate homes right now, which is uh what I want to talk about for the after show because we can go Buckwild And if not, at least I'm not in that manic state or in that uh state of uh r uh rumination and I I don't know, it's a start.

It's mainly over like probably months or a year or more. My neural recording is intended for replay using headphones and will not translate properly over stereo speakers. I would Until I can prove it for myself. Well well, but what I find interesting is there's something for when I say there's something for everybody, I think I actually mean I don't know what they call that, but that little jumpy zoom in, that little jumpy zoom out, one of my favorite things on succession. The rewinding is death. Then I thought about, well, okay, but like that's actually kind of emblematic of this bigger thing, which is like input does not always create the kind of output that you expect. Oh, could be a challenge.

Like you can obviously pick profiles. I th think mm that I can hear a difference, and I don't know if that's That might be the end. And also, I think you might have not only have Dropbox still running, but I think you're actually this recording is running into our Dropbox folder as we I don't know. Artemis kills. I said Matthew and I are separated. Did you know there's a secret gland that'll allow you to astral project? Which is sometimes I get kinda cranky. Like that's the one that wins. Maybe that's you've been assigned, you get paid after you hit this word count and it's gone through production. Like we're making this thing to throw away or a throwaway prototype, which is like we're just gonna draw a bunch of stuff on paper that does not reflect any level of commitment.

Why is it that when I'm laying down to go to sleep, I feel anxiety thoughts? But once I've created this, I know where stuff goes. I was like, wait, so then a and then again I was going in between I got I got a stupid uh Spotify uh subscription to uh try to hear the difference. Oh, that makes me ha I like when that that happens. Good afternoon. Yes. Wait. So like the problem with spam was because in order to keep the openness of email and the interoperability of email and all that kind of stuff back in the day. It is not horrible and boring. And I don't know why yet, but I can't pretend it doesn't happen. I don't know if I have anything interesting to say about this other than Maybe she's on the spectrum or something.

Like just with the development of Dennis's character. Are you guys separated? He wrote Lolita on index cards. I could be getting it wrong. I've been, I think, you know, probably depressed. I'll talk about more in a second. That's a thing. And it it is admittedly somewhat solpsistic, but I feel like there might be something here. Women and everyone else. Did you I mean I think I I I technically well I mean I technically did it but only in like the laziest possible way, which is you sent me a link to an app. No, no, not at all. Mm-hmm. Goodbye. And he duct tapes the hands on. Which speaking great when Greg tries to blackmail him. I'm like, I absolutely don't. We have a lot to talk about in the after show.

And then you feel like you're abandoning the self you want to be if you don't keep worrying. There's always another anxiety right there right there. I will have a um a dreaded result that might be my undoing thought. It is the Especially when I don't realize because I listen to when I like fall asleep at night. I I'm going to find the the I I won't be no for one thing, and that's for saying that this is the first Oh, not necessarily. So even though you could just you could just sit and write in one long document and that would be it. We play with those to great effect. So like it was is does that cause something? Or it turns out that it was totally baseless and I was just imagining something that could happen.

Oh really? Or sorry, ask me if I like being that way. And then always, oh, it's because it's got transparency on it. And then I think the audio part got a lot less interesting because it's pretty impossible. I'm not saying I agree with this, but the what I get is, oh, you can get your brain on the page that you want it to be on by listening to a certain pattern, a sign pattern. Or you come over and hit me in the face with it and I say why are you doing that? So what I'm loving in Obsidian though is I this idea was I want to talk to myself and just to myself. Mm-hmm. And then Sarah Paulson. That seems those seem those are very upsetting to me. Like uh what whatever. With the with the minnows. Listen, it's not it's not the right feeling, but it is a feeling.

Um you're talking specifically about the way it's recorded and mixed? I'm sorry. Oh good, good, good. No, I mean like you sound legit manic, are you all right? I d I I don't know. Even if the topic's not serious, you can still you can still organize this in a way that's sensible. Like mm I I do my uh like I I've got a tag called M Mind Doodles, which are just Is that in something like drafts? Can we also just briefly, we don't have to go crazy on this, but explain like what is, for folks who don't know, what is binaural audio? No, it it it's really bad and I hate it. I'm trying to sp I don't know, I guess sometimes, yeah. I I suppose. No, no, no, no. No off balance. And so but like, so how do you find the balance between like, well, there's something that happens in your brain and in the world, and then over here is a finished product, and in between stuff happens.

Like just this is the problem with my brain. I was so into it. Oh yeah, no, I've I've I uh and then around four a. Like like at first it's a distress. Yeah. Yes. Uh oh wow. But I I said, Well, I always think of that little jump as being here is Oh, I should get we should get an intern. It's almost like it's uh almost it might as well be men's default emotion. That's okay. Like an anxious person is always scanning the horizon for what the next thread is. Right. But I'm not I'm not saying he gets this, but that's like my third, that's like the third one. Yeah, no, absolutely. Yeah. And I always think of that scene in Mr. Let me get this right. Oh I love oh I th I think that's an underrated one.

He worked on White Noise and Marriage Story. No, no, they they have a uh somewhat um equal uh uh pairing a according to That's funny you should say that because uh again, a dispatch that comes in from another part of the universe to me. No, I'm sorry. Merlin, you are right. Um I can find another example of this. Well, the problem is that when your when your brain is is a reminder, whatever is telling you these things that end up being like bad information, it is trying to help. Sometimes you need a glass to put your water in. Okay, I'm gonna wait till 3. And uh whoa, what what I mean? Like, I don't want you looking at that. Um no, I I feel pretty good. I the blank check, fandom so good. That's a take-home.

Well and then you can use this instead of be because of the folder. What's another example of checking in? And it's not, you know, the same way that like one one way I got my head right a little bit with sleep was to stop thinking that if I'm awake I've failed sleep for the Do you want to sound like it's coming from in front of you, et cetera? Oh, you're watching Life is Strange. Oh like until you know what I mean? We just haven't found I have not found anyway like sort of what it is yet. Oh, you mean his his I think he might have been Mr. Every everybody's got their reasons for like why a thing needs to get up and what success looks like. And why is my brain? That does that is the wrong emotion.

No, and I'm I'm happy I'm happy to I'm happy to talk about it. So only because I have a vague memory of watching a featurette where the Oh where he's rolling around. Hmm. Real quick, I do think some of that is coming back Lost is a good word for something you know you'll never see again. And that gives me a place to go straight back into the markdown outlining mode where I feel like I thrive. So like you go say I'm going to bed, you get into bed. When I made uh the incredibly cruel jokes about being separated from uh my spouse. Um, like if in they do stuff that, you know, AirPods Macs don't do. Like is this I would never go all the way down perhaps to like a separate paragraphs I apologize. And but what was key was there was a thing you had to do in an incantation to say, well this system folder is the one that's running the computer.

I haven't had the sex thought yet, so I'm probably not asleep. It's like, and it's like, okay, then what is it? She'll never admit it. Wouldn't you rather start with a bang than a whimper? This is a safe this is a safe space. God damn it, Alex. For the whole thing's delightful starting with like so basically there's a wonderful episode of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia called The Nightman Cometh. That was released in 75. And he sounds nice and down to earth. It's a it's a very funny episode, Pedro Pascal. I'm trying to do the journal thing every day and I'm trying to actually not just keep my streak going 28 days, but to also like We'll do better next time. Yes, please. Like it's not even like my special thing, but more a like a Maria Bamfred style, like, ugh, what was that thought?

It's so I've used a Les Paul once and it was incredibly cool. And it's that idea that I don't know if this is super science-y, but like, you know, uh about the different like the Oh, I can't believe it. That's actually really that's very interesting. But I just thought it would be valuable. I must you must never rewind to to show me something you thought was interesting. Um the uh addreved result is like so you're anxious why are you anxious about something? And I listened to that, but I did nothing on my own to seek out additional binaural. Matthew and I are not separate. Yeah, the elements is more where like stuff to keep goes. Can't I just have one good day? That's a related kind of one. But an image considered like the default studio microphone?

Oh, that's that's the end. What you're doing right now? Sarah Paulson has a cameo and she's mommy. She's got a grind. She's saying this is adjacent to lots of other stuff kind of related to this vagal stuff. But then what up what have I done now? I actually, according to my watch, I fall asleep pretty fast. Yeah, it it's adorable. And like Marco has mentioned, I'll probably just pick the one that was loudest. That was true of things like you look nice today, where I I had a very clear but you know what that said, there are times where I like I have a certain mental model for like if the people were in the room, what it would look like and what order where they're sitting, who's left. Scrivener's like one of the greatest things ever written for a computer.

I'm sorry. Anyway, this is all this all sounds very solpsistic and it probably is, but it's been a really interesting project and something I think I'll keep working on for a while because it feels like there's something. Like l uh there's a reason there's all of these things to do before the Sabbath because you can't just No, that's the the thing is when I would listen to s supposed like a binaural recordings, it Wait, wait, no. Kind of always begins with a little bit of an explosion, doesn't it? I j I genuinely am. I reserve the right to just stop this at any point because holy shit, Alex. No. Mu much in the same way that I like to use like uh I might use a formal outlining app for something or something, you know, actually scrivener or whatever it is.

And they have documentation about it. And then when I listened to the thing you sent on AirPods Max, I didn't Like I mentioned something last time. Hello, hello. Uh speaking of anxiety. What I am thinking about is how much vulnerability you want to share. But what thinking about the wrong emotion, it was very easy for me to immediately type. Like all that's really valuable to me. Oh, um, I it can wait. You see what happen what happens is there's the there's the the night man Your framing devices make everything feel abnormal. Yeah, he's he's gone for one whole week, which is why um I'm sorry, that was mean. You open it up and you mainly think about structure and then you could start writing in like the notes field.

Like that would that's you know it was never designed to be used like that. You start over tomorrow. Anyway, sorry, that was I really carried on quite a lot there. Because well, uh there are different kinds of uh by n neural microphones and there seems to be uh like uh not not a I would never I wouldn't want to criticize that. I think that I would try to avoid that because I think it's difficult not to turn that into something more visual. That was a weird one. No no no. But then Billy pulled up one account on TikTok. Alright. Yeah, probably. And what I'm trying to do is create locations, blessed locations for like where this thing goes. I need to like actually be in a situation where it would be real easy to kill me.

Twenty minutes half thirty minutes? I'm not even talking about stereo sounding stuff. Maybe like, you know, I don't know. I will save it for notes. Um with this whole idea was from the very beginning, we just need a way for people to be able to collaborate on something together and to be able to make edits and changes to things. Like there's no bad ideas. These are lanes where things go. Right. And I tried all the different things. But it's a delight, especially if you like that show is constantly paying off how much you've watched. So this is like the original. There are some that only have like three or four people contributing to it. It's n it's it is flashy in its way, but like with the little lord, um I think one of the keys is to getting the little lord to not object is I don't constantly point things out who was in the other thing.

Really good. Because and that's why for one, for example, one of these, and I realize this is this is where a little bit of hierarchy I hate that. That's a totally normal kind of thing. How could that go from relief right to like anger? 30, but 3. Oh wait, wait. Because yeah, right, because all some Dolby Atmos is considered And and former editor and trader uh Quinn Rose, and I haven't heard of the episode yet. He wrote everything on index cards because there was something valuable to him. And like he's like, yeah, but like so like secondarily, he's like, this is incredibly inappropriate. So there's other kinds of categories that are like examples, experiences, traumas, all the kinds of things that I say, well I I and then I can write that as a sentence.

You could say, like, I want like, you know, somewhere you pick like equalizer settings. Like he um the guy who plays him is not like he's not talent primarily. Really? It was the the one that um took over Kara Swisher's feed at the New York Times and they just plopped it right in and does it have ADHD still too? Give me a question you want the answer to. Um I was uh this is funny timing. I have a whole area in here. Ah god damn it, I gotta make myself go to sleep. I was like, wow! The effect is often created using a technique technique known as dummy head recording, where an a mannequin head is fitted with a microphone in each ear. Um, second paragraph of the history section on Wikipedia. They're all the Wes Anderson guys.

God, Linda! I like uh uh leaning away and laughing from the mic and C people seem to enjoy it. I want you, I want you up here and I want you thinking. Geez, why would I be off balance? Um, we've been watching succession. In in what show. Then you start yelling at people around you because you're sad. It's not every night. Yeah. And I don't know, it's it's interesting because those all have a similar a related similar idea of like here's For the wisdom thing. But it's so this episode, this is the second time she's been on that I know of, Britt Frank, and talking about procrastination in particular. And actually, if you were honest with yourself and went and looked in your closet, you'd see you have an entire palette of Kleenex boxes.

Getting it? I don't want to get ahead of myself on this because one thing I have learned over time is that like when if you're producing work for a purpose, you have a pretty good idea like what Well example another example of checking in is scanning the horizon. And then like if you can't sleep, get up because this is for sleeping. I'll go like, oh yeah, this feels familiar. God damn it, you're recording. Fox. Well, I mean to me that makes it would be strange if you didn't hear a difference. Uh you know what? Well what is anxiety? I get kind of like not angry, but I'm a little bit like irrascible Calm down. Like when you hear a stereo and there's like separation to it, it's really it's disorienting, for example, to listen to the Ramones or the early Beatles where like And why don't I feel like oh Eric Anderson is oh he's Chris Christopherson.

He's been around for a while. And I always thought that was so interesting because it never lost the writingness of whatever you wrote. And in a similar way you could do inscrivener, I mean But anyway, and you have to answer questions and it becomes clear that basically nobody knows who anybody is anymore because there's too much TV and movies. It's more difficult. One of them is that like right before I fall asleep, I have an unexpected The drums are in the middle, but the bass and the guitar are panned all the way left and right in a way that's kind of disorienting. Yes. Fox, where if you're a super fan of that movie, you might know that the way they recorded a lot of the dialogue was like out in the field.

Why you had a you have a you had a Rushmore poster at at some point. Also I hate how people hold it on YouTube. How are you? There's there you care about what words mean. There's one where it's like a you know a game show bit, three three contestants and And uh we'll try anyway. Well, let's take a beat here and I'll start to maybe CBT like I start to notice a pattern that whenever I get relief from a dumb anxiety, I can anticipate. Like when you listen to a podcast, do you picture people being in the same room in your head? Yeah. I should watch that again. Oh fuck it. So this is a woman called Britt Frank. It's a indicator that internal consent has not been given. Yep pretty much and but but then a funny thing happens I've realized But I'll sometimes just say to myself, you know, I'll look at the day.

So for example, one of them is that like I can I my headphones are smart. I'll try and find this and send it to you, but the that that song I mentioned by the band The Church, where it's recorded in a pretty echoey room. I might have even mentioned this last week. Like and of course, as a true hillbill hillbilly, I not only don't hear the difference, but I figure that people telling me that there's a difference is some kind of a fancy person scam. Here's the thing. Whether that's the comment section or whether that's um He's a teacher. Calm down, calm down, calm down. I've created this blessed structure into which I could go, okay, are there other things that are like the wrong emotion? 30 I'm taking speed and my day begins and I'm really fucking into it.

That makes me so happy. There's so much of that that can be achieved with stereo recording that is not close mic'd. It's pretty magic. If you have any, any, any visual cue while you're recording, you cannot help but but but but do things that cause people to think realize, oh this isn't actually an audio record. It's the um hard fork is the damn pashman? Mm-hmm. God, this is the same thing. I yes. I mean I'm like mm-hmm, Alex. The less context you have, the less you can understand about why something happened. And trying to like kind of like not just think my way out of it, but like write my way out, if you like. Is it caused by something? Oh of course bump anticipation and the continuity are um things in here.

Though this thing will be my undoing. Chia uh challenge. Arranged with the intent to create a 3D stereo sound. Because I'm forever changing the volume by turning a little bit or what but also I will accidentally invoke a different mode and not realize it. I didn't know that either. Like there's just so much weird stuff on that show. Hmm. We are literally I was I was saying no no no I was saying, for example The film critic is like, um uh something knives out, right? But I'm also thinking about, you know, the conversations we've uh uh had for the past Hamilton's awesome. That's what you're doing. I know where stuff goes. So then where when does this capture ha happening? Oh, I hate it. So the fair answer would be I I I can understand why someone does think about that, but I don't think I think a lot about that.

So uh what would be the setup then uh for you look nice today with you Adam and Scott? This is like the wiki of wikis. But sometimes when I'll first like get exposed to a show um or a movie or whatever, it is really handy to go like, okay. If I've been very, very anxious about something over a period of days, for example, and then whatever something happens that alleviates Oh that's here's a good one by the way, the dreaded result. Where it could become sort of like my own handbook kind of thing. Well, what is a pattern? I'm copying, I'm cutting, and I'm going to after show stuff and I'm pasting. And the kids' ear air pods are in like all day pretty much. It startled me. Um like I adore Wallace Wallodarski.

Linda Otter, the secretary is Karen Duffy from MTV. Oh God, I'm so so creepy. And I think when you I in my opinion, when you record and it's meant to be something, it was never intended to be a video thing, right? I mean, Matthew and I have separated, but is this a reference Might be the original wiki. I'm not saying this is not a class, I'm not accredited. He's like sitting over there watching the two guys. It's an audio bit. Let's this is this is the real feelings bit. I I I I have a writing project that I work on. Like like the whole idea of you You will never catch up on sleep. I it's just mainly that it's happened often enough that It's like the Bose headphones too, right? And it all it all really just sounded like, you know, spa sounds.

Yeah, so and like well like Wes Anderson does a voice, Wes Anderson's brother does a voice. Yes. Oh, I think it's very good. I feel um I don't feel I don't feel bad. Yeah, I don't know about that. And it's just interesting to me because like Scrivener, back when I was trying to use Scrivener to write a book, I really did love the fact that And I had a response to that, but I was about to frame it in the context of this wiki. And that could be that, oh, it turns out it was actually an easy fix. Yeah. Well, like, you know, we we nothing in here is a plan. I can first expect that my memory is racing a little bit when I lay down. It's not always these three, four, five things. How does that work?

But i i y it like everything, depends on the headphones, depends on what your It's really funny. Like supposedly it helps you sleep because but I'm not quite sure about the How are you? Charlie, you keep saying metaphor, I don't think you know what that means. Do you have favorites? But it feels like there's something here, right? We uh we uh you you uh that's gonna be that's the fourth thing of this year. And like saying you are off center. No, no. But in any case, I don't know if anybody else can relate to that. I think that's what you said. You know what I'm saying? Right. Very good. And you go, Well you told me you wanted to throw a ball. Mm-hmm. If they've come up here, you can guess that they probably also come up a lot in other places.

My understanding of a category error is you misunderstand or misapprehend something because it's a different category of thing than you realize. Does it take you a while to fall asleep? I never Uh you can still be uh on the spectrum and still be a bitch though. I think I'm Okay, so you're not but you're in Mad ar You You've got to do some of it, but you oughtn't do it all the time. In that case, for example, no, if I'm being honest, it's more like, God damn it, like you know, I can't control the food order or do you should tell me if we're out of milk. So in this case, I can go like, well, once I've created this this family of pain, which is a great episode of Doctor Who, by the way. Yeah, yeah.

I just wrote a thousand words of something. Like it's happened often enough that it's come back up. And I d uh it's too late to find out. I hate it. But personally, um I don't I'm gonna say this and it's gonna be a flex and I don't mean it to be. Martini in the play, but I'm not sure. And when he has his first line in the play. Well, thanks. No, I do not. Like it's it it's a little bit more than a little bit. That was a good movie. No, I'm making jokes because I still feel b feel bad about it, which is a category error I'm making because I'm not helping Did did that make sense when I said like, you know, you got parents? It's like I'm immediately looking for the species ending event in the dumbest shit that's not happening.

Well, uh I I do feel better after I've gotten up. It's not like a condenser uh versus dynamic. And I think it's actually just called headphones. And what's wild is in pla I would never leave that on, but in playing with that, I was like, oh. And do you want and do you want that simulated I like it personally. It's cute. It's a lot of lesbian talk. Because you were telling me about the metaphor of you being off balance. I don't know what I don't know what any of that means. Like here's one of him all in like Western wear from The Kingsman. And the 10 to 1 sketch is uh an instant classic. We should I mean uh you know what? I mean not in a bad way. I use it, I now have over 15,000 drafts as of this week.

Jay Miller literally passes out. Category error is the error of assigning to something a quality or action that can probably properly be assigned to things only of another category. Um But you know, then I started going, you know, it's weird. I do not. No, no, no. And I hold I pick it up and I didn't mean for it to be a, it was absolutely not a bit, because I'm thinking about an audio podcast. We didn't have a lot to say about this. There are all these ways to do that. It's uh in on that polyvagal scale, I'm a little bit frozen. And the category error I think is an interesting idea of like, well, it's They're in that all that all in the little wiki. None of those things are the product. I don't exactly under and the entrainment, when they use that word entrainment, I think This is Do by Friday, a weekly challenge podcast with Alex Cox and Merlin Mann.

I watched the balloon bit only because I didn't know about the balloon. And I had uh there's so many levels to this. I don't know. And that's when I realized, like, okay, for example And when then when we scan the horizon, we'll notice anything that looks like it has roughly the shape of the thing that could lead to this. Uh uh about an hour and a half m. And it always seems to come back to some photo of a lab in a white room with a mannequin head. And some of it's very clever, at least conceptually. Um but then one of the really interesting things, and I don't have it open in front of me, but one of the really interesting things is to say like, okay, well now I like it. I always think of that scene in Fantastic Mr.

It really is kind of as I I forget it might have been Group who first said this, but it is like AR for your ears. Yeah. I think so. Hi. This is why we're horrible. I don't know if you can see it. And it becomes a way of generating new ideas or thoughts I didn't know I already had. Things that tend to work. I I appreciate you listening. Oh okay. Yeah, yeah. I hate it so much. And then I pick up this. They'll know. So I tell you I'm off center and you respond by telling me you separated. I am, but although I do genuinely feel guilty because that was We've kind of lost a little bit of that. Can any of these be like can I begin to harvest these into something that could be two lines? She hasn't done that thing where she's figured out a dumb way to be called doctor.

Yeah, I hadn't thought of it that particular way, but you're right. Challenge. I want to know what off-center means. I I I maybe I'm deluding myself into thinking that, you know, yay RSS is back, yay, wikis are back. But then I was working a little bit on some one part of my process, nobody cares, but part of my process for writing the wisdom stuff is I Yeah. I could be my most patient because I am vulnerable and I am trying to make my peace with the world around me and maybe I want people to be nice It's a bad idea because there's all kinds of ways that could be I shouldn't be freaked out by this. I decide, you know what, I'm uh giving up on the sleep and uh yeah, then but oh giving the giving up can be good though.

Is feeling terrible about you how you slept wrong every night? And whatever special sauce leads to that. But it's not as accessible. The uh you know, the in-ear gu uh guys. Did you know he played that role um in the play? Well hm. Okay. Like am I am I acting am I sad because I'm angry? And it's okay. I just don't know it yet. The latest one I realized is I don't have a better word for this, the tinglys, which is I realized the last thing I can usually remember before falling asleep is like, okay. And I somehow get access to this little corridor. Um, you have something here about being a free agent. I'll find it. Oh, did you wait, did you go and look for it? Yeah. And I'm like, oh, scanning the horizon is an instance of checking in.

What if what if the dreaded result is something that's so horrible for us to even And the way that I phrase that, ha ha, Merl's so funny. Maybe it's a blog post and you just the most important thing is that like there's been a new update to an unannounced product. It's not weird that sometimes it's not what you wanted yet. I think that's what I think. When do you get into writing and capturing? Especially mmm, quote podcast li the the video podcast with uh I I I'm s talking more about how it is uh mixed, I think. Good afternoon. Oh, um I think people are really gonna want to see these kung fu moves. It works. Um, so go to w wiki. All this person does is fan cams. Yeah, no, it's it's a real it's one of those things where we don't really know that much about it, but it's not like, you know, the the It's so good.

But no, he's actually a dude. And I want you like, believe me, I got enough people in my life who can't be troubled to learn what my joke means And so that kind of stuff. Tick-tick-boom's my favorite movie. Hey, calm down. Uh this week's challenge was intentionally open-ended, but I uh Yep. The the uncanny valiness But but no, I I I mean like that's not I don't mean that necessarily everybody should do the thing that works and you gotta find, you know, we gotta find what But like you can't just come up with some new funny bit that involves you holding, oh y'all can't see this, but I'm holding up a dildo. This is where like and this was, I think for years and years was just compl Maybe I think it's a lot of people.

Do you know what I mean? Greg, what are you doing? For example, there's this thing that I call the wrong emotion. That's Zoomies. I only say that once the anxiety's gone away and now I'm a big strong man. Do you think though when you're you cause you have uh Does that make sense? Okay. Mac's relationship with Kung Fu and then Country Mac comes along. Which it's not a bad way to start something. Oh no, because I started talking about a wiki and then you started talking about fandom for sure. We I am putting a It's it it really is, it's like everything is either everything is fine or I'm angry. Well they didn't make you sad. That is not a thing. Click here to hear the difference. Um but anyway, I I'm very interested in whatever this thing is.

I was walking around. That is my the theory. Oh, absolutely. Is that a result of your anxiety? Previous um, but you were off Because between DDOS and, you know, mischief And that, you know, I've been trying to handle sort of um I used to think that anxiety was a cause of things, and now I've over the years come to realize that anxiety can be a It is a thing. It just feels Yeah, I I call 'em the brain zoomies. And it relates to all of this. And there are a few apps, um, I don't think the Odeo one I sent you Um and can just That seems like what's an impossible decision machine title? In nineteen seventy eight, Lou Reed released the first commercially produced binaural pop record, Street Hassle.

Have you seen that? I don't see myself getting upset about that, but I I own your upsetness. I mean it might do something, but you know You have Matt for your photo. Oh, I think that's the C two might be the OG. Um, again, I just watched all of succession all the way through. Like I enjoy writing, right? But like well, okay, like I'll write down uh for example, I said on February 3rd I wrote, you know Even as I'm saying this right now, these could all be related sort of entries in understanding these connections. Well, let's focus a minute. But like I didn't get to pick how I am. I I mean, as with a lot of things, especially pertaining to hearing. Um because the one of the I just layered in marketing terms and like, ah, look at look at this.

Hmm. It's just it's so much and it's such an attractive nuisance to me. Like what are all those things? Scanning the horizon relates to I I will go back and and listen to the tape. The idea of a three-dimensional or internal form of sound has also translated into et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. But you know, to you'd have to kind of go Oh we went on a date when we had when we first had a baby, we went on a date to see the the yellow one with the Coonskin cap. Um I I Could everybody please stop making fanc? And uh one reason I'm interested in and love her right off the Well yeah, that's the that could be the imposter syndrome kind of stuff, but like being exposed for the person you didn't realize you were.

It's called the falling asleep process. No no no no but And then I was like, man, I am so glad that I did not. And then no, I'll respect, I'll respect. All of those things, what do they all have in common? Um and so like that all probably takes place could be even I'm gonna guess inside five minutes, six minutes. Okay. You could have be sim some people as simple as like, well, who is the cast of this show? It's because most of us were raised. But like another one that happens, and there's a pattern here, another one that happens is Like you can have more than one device connected, which I love. Which is yes, no, it is it is related. Um as long as you bring it up. Everybody's alive and I don't have those expectations.

And how does it all relate to why I'm slightly off balance? Right. Marker, marker. No, I just like the vibes, I suppose, of the smaller ones. That I mean, is is isn't that part of what distinguishes it? But I don't know. Well, it it Did you know Noah Bomb Smart co-wrote Fantastic Mr. Like I I when a podcast or or human presence. Oh god, this is called things like this are called different things. How are I'm very well. But anyway, he's and he but he's he's so sweet and he's so gracious. But no, we are literally separated because he is off And I Oh, absolutely. And that's your life now. This like the idea of of fight, flight, freeze, rest, um, digest, all of those things. And uh it seems kind of valuable to have a place where Yeah.

I I you it used to be after thirty minutes I would get out of bed because I don't know what it's good for, but oh my god, I made coffee for everybody It didn't feel particularly roomy to me. And like there's that whole thing where I'm all I've always been a little bit like Uh may uh make my I see you. But I also love the idea that you could view this as an outline and you use your own sense of logic. So I think you kind of have to lock that stuff down a little bit. But uh I was gonna say you were calling Koi Kor. Tell me remi wait he's It's not always in this order. What is the day? Fox where they're eating breakfast. I always remember Francis Haw he did with Greta Gerwig. It's weird. Well and uh that's And when Okay, but like like the person that you're interviewing, where like you're the interviewer, you should let the person talk about it.

No. Okay. Oh yeah Wikis used to be something that was mainly for like a small group of people and everybody had the same access These are all real these these There's something, there's something. I thought to myself, okay, this is this is all feeling very interesting. And so I was like, hmm, the the wrong emotion. And it just keeps doing it over and over. Mm-hmm. Well no, I mean wh wh why do you ask questions you don't want the answer? I want the real feelings. But the thing is, you know that phrase paper prototype? It's almost like I ask you Yeah, Noah Bombach also, what was the other thing recently that Why are we talking about uh oh fantastic ma mystically record thing? Okay. Yep. Why in the hell would you ever actually do it?

You know what I'm talking about the kinds of things where you have anxiety and then it it resolves for whatever reason and When someone's disrespectful to you, you become disrespectful to other people. Like if I'm asleep, you know, right? Right. I don't know. It's not supposed you're not supposed to like notice the way that it's mixed. And sometimes I really like that gimmick. I'm like, oh holy shit. Um So like I'm gonna work on some writing stuff and you're the writer show you're a writer. I don't know if you're like this, I'm like this. I have been consistently getting in bed uh at eleven PM central time and uh Um And you open it up and of course it's an app from Sony and that does all kinds of, I think.

Hmm. Then I have this other kind of project where I journal a little bit. But it was I mentioned it to you because well because it started off with you, I think And what is that got a category of? I love that. There's like three things. I'm better at finding anti-patterns. Oh that's good. You can catch up on I think the idea of rest, but you c sleep is not a thing that can be caught up on in my opinion. I I really do It's not it's not just stereo and it's not just what we think of as That's stereo. He's not Mr. Uh I'm well Oh, so anyway, so there's this, there's a play inside the Always Sunny episode. And you'll and it's it's a little disorienting, right? Um, the way that she the previous time that she was on, she goes more into the Uh yeah yeah because of God for me right after relief comes Yeah, yeah.

That's how my brain works. It's like, well yeah, for you maybe going and reading a boring book or any hot milk and all those things. And it's one of those things where the the the music you're listening to has to But but no, I I don't know why. Yeah. What's his name? Well, because it's much less interesting Like via and you mate me? And um, but yeah. It's finally sort of like a mind map that almost works with my mind for I mean he liked I think he right wrote on like a little board. Oh the fast. And I realized I'm gonna give myself just a little bit of weekend. And for men, the wrong emotion is almost always anger. Is it is it something like thick in the throat? . go to c2. And so people exploited that.

But the show is a little bit low-key and you really it's very it's a very visual show. Uh try to be a good example. But sometimes I don't want to be that way, but I've realized I'm that way. Emotions are caused by these things. Well, it's because there's a vulnerability that's been created. I mean you said the I'm like, oh yeah, that's happened before. I wonder what that means. I haven't had those in years. It's a it's a real mind fuck. The combination of sound staying on and not getting in the way, or they're kind of perfect for that. I mean it's it's kinda like you told me that you wanted to, I don't know, throw a ball around Oh, yeah. I thought I got, but now I get. That's That's that's the conventional wisdom.

And then another night I'll go, oh yeah, didn't I have a thought about this, about this, the Fasties or whatever? Um And just Um and I it anytime you've got that, that you can I did not know Madeline and I were both just like I i the joke works. And why I think the Canvas thing is interesting is that like I don't want to lose the wickiness of this. It doesn't matter what it is, but hey you, are you anxious? Nobody who's reading Time magazine cares about that or nobody cares too much about the typeface or whatever. So do I, but I also don't like that. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know, man. Uh it's very interesting. Okay, it's like so And I think that means I'm about to fall asleep. If it's something where I have to be up to get the kid to school at a certain time, that's not really negotiable Maybe the reason the Sony thing that I mentioned worked so well was because by design it's saying It wasn't a bit, but it was funny because they laughed and I was like, oh yeah, I guess that shoots How are you?

Rome and craft all over the colour. Pepper, you know, one of those that makes your hands look look bad. Have you have you ever had these or done done anything with this app? Um No th uh it made me more excited for But if you don't have visual cues while you're recording, Um let me see if I can get you this. I just came up with that one, the dreaded result. It's not always anything except that. I should go, oh, here comes that thing. Oh I like the sexies. Oh, wow. No, it's it's um with m. You open up uh what is it called? I'm pretty sure it's all built on Wiki And I might actually go like, huh? The idea is you say, well, here's one that we'll just for the sake of argument call like on the bus.

I feel somehow even more confused than I was last week. Wallace Wallodarsky. Not in a very like I really do. Mr. And that comes from a program I used to be on where we could see each other and It's not I'll let Bono know. Hmm. But but primarily it's like, why do you do this every day? That'd be such a fun infomercial. Like if it truly becomes it could be, but like I don't want to get um Mm-hmm. And it's it's That was mean. to throw the ball around. Yeah fuck it. I haven't ever like sat down. So that's where this is for This always seems to happen. I've had like three different models of those over the years and I think they're pretty good. Like I I could not Christopherson, Christopherson. Uh uh there's funny timing because I was listening to You Are Not So Smart and We pull out what you think is the last anxiety but Okay.

My kid hates it. Oh. Carly the the um the possum. I'm not sure. Right now? But why are you off center other than that very Um, let's see. Overthinking that would get in the way of what it's really for, which is providing. Like like um typically it's like when I was taken Adderall especially I'd be like f It it feels like there are people playing I gotta know. Yeah. I don't know. Well, I mean it's it's you could exaggerate that. com. The idea would be to like make those kinds of associations and create a Um But I always think of binaural, at least in the way I heard about first heard about it years ago, was that it's But but the the but w one thing that's interesting about them is that they're meant to be like We talked about this last week with Fleetwood Mac.

Well, okay, screw it. I love I love that kind of stuff. Like it's but like it's vital to me and the people around me that I like figure. I I it's hard to it's difficult to know how long it is because of course I might be falling asleep a little bit and then just kind of waking up a little bit. That's not actually binaural. Mm-hmm. Just kidding. I like the fan cams of their romantic And I'm realizing, you know, this actually is would be kind of an interesting thing. Well because your mind already knows you're not going to do it. I did the YouTube bit. If you can't be a good example, at least be an interesting cautionary tale. Well, absolutely. And each time the old dog is exactly still, makes exactly the same face, and then the expression changes.

That's okay. No, I just have free reign of the apartment. That feels like a stretch. Yeah. I know if it's my fault. You've got to give yourself How's it different from stereo? Charlie Kelly does not know what a metaphor is That's sweet. And isn't isn't that interesting? I mean I think it's it's partly of it as a matter of taste and I get it. Would you rather be fast or smart? I'm right here. And I I throw you the ball and then Am I angry because I'm sad or something else or everything? So then that makes me think, okay, what are what are other flavors of checking? Sometimes you've got to really give it to yourself in pigs and bunnies. Why is it that after the relief of anxiety, I feel anger? But you understand, just so we're clear here, but I do like I like some eldritch shit.

And if typically if I can relax, I uh You know what I mean? My headphones combined, I guess, with my phone. I've course Brian Cox is the reporter. And we're the least important people that were invited to the meeting and yet we're the only people there. I didn't know. And Billy just kept saying, Oh yeah, I know about Greg Tom or whatever. Well that feels like a category of In the same way that I know where my forks go. From like a biological standpoint. I remember that. I like the simulated spatial thing. She likes to bind and be bound. I would just have to think like I face this even in forty three folders days was Funny voices Or like, you know, file a form, I guess. Cool. Mm-hmm. Back Yeah.

The s I think the squirrel might be Wes Anderson's brother. L If there is something to look at, another reason I didn't want to give out my slides.
