But people who are PC enthusiasts or you know, Apple II enthusiasts or whatever, like you learn everything about it, you get good at it, you learn how to program, you do all that stuff. And this is the part where I don't want to be unkind because this is not a bit, but like a lot of the folks who were 15, 16, 19 when they got into computers. Um the impression I got, and maybe I'm projecting here, is that he just couldn't do that, wasn't into it, and he just wanted to go play with his action figures. Th these meetings might be more productive if we had breakout groups and assigned tasks and somebody managed all of those things. You got lines, you got planes, you got points. So that would be funny because a train doesn't have fingers per se.

Nobody likes it correctly. I was like, look at fucking Boba Fett, even in the Star Wars holiday special from, you know, the where he originated. She she was one of the evil whores, of course. Oh my God. This was presented as a way to help people who don't understand this stuff communicate more effectively with people who do. But I mean people were not watching or engaging in her take. And like Frankie goes to Hollywood is playing like donk gon. Let's say your friend said that he's laid off from the company and got compensated for six months of salary and you say, I wish I could be laid off tomorrow too. What? It's almost the wrong word for it. One thing I don't exactly love or don't exactly understand is how you're supposed to discontiguously suggest and do stuff with files.

There's only so much you can do with the readability of a markdown table because there's a lot of chart chunk and you know Chrome and Croft. It's very fucking hot. So here's a data view. I would always do the thing of like, oh, you click here, so like you have a category called Foo, FUBAR, and you click on Foobar, and when you click on Foobar, that takes you to the category page for Foobar. Okay. It's got author, it's got title, it's got all these things. Guess what? It's really hard to figure th that out. Right. And make it feel approximately twice as big and go out of the tub and get yelled at. My Marcuccio, I don't even know the guy's name, uh the guy in the nineteen sixty eight version. Do you don't you ever worry though, if I could project for a second, don't you ever worry that you're saying that to somebody who's already subscribed and you're kind of like, dude, I'm already supporting you?

to omg. No, no, I haven't seen it. It's I think he is the coolest Star Wars character. Uh well the Kenneth Branhoff production of Hamlet I think is the f first uh I think it's the only movie that did the full text. It's like, we're gonna be a little bit light on Hosea. to the very beginning. How would I miss it? He's in this he's that that's his little that's his little bassinet that he goes around in. Isn't that what they call it? Ready for this? And it's like I got a really nice DM from somebody and like I I compose responses when people write to me. I don't think this is a false file. I think it's a younger person. Didn't I do the right thing to keep it to myself except for here where no one's listening?

You need to stop it. But uh I n I hmm, I disagree. This is but does it feel a little bit full like a f not not a deliberate false flag in that usual sense of the word, but doesn't this feel like the kind of thing that like one read the ultimately the reason I did not say anything about this except on our on our So I was playing around with Obsidian and just just for uh the sake of uh continuity, yes, if memory serves, uh nothing you need to listen to, but if memory serves, we have done obsidian as a challenge before, and I loved it. TV show. And it's not a good idea. No, go ahead, keep going. So I got that installed. Command shift P. at this but let me send you two look at this one this is a data view that is uh just it just I just did a flyer a copy and paste but like look at the stuff you can get in a table This week's challenge revisit Obsidian Uh uh the last couple weeks it's become very clear that sometimes um you're not sure what to say.

I don't want to talk about this on the show, but um I just sent a link to a Hollywood reporter story on Justin Royland. socialized like maybe poor in cult controls. What am I if Dr. we which is even a new show for years he just records from home and doesn't shall be his new Rick and Morty participation was very heavily before the show, very heavily in the first season. Skew you do you want do you want do you want another season? And this might I don't know if this is appropriate, but of course it's impossible for me to not see this as similar to something that you see in came at it at a time when you had to do a lot of it on your own. Uh how do I say this? to being a manager. past. But if you wanted to get a pay bump and move up, you had to become a manager and probably a manner manager of people.

pfft my r my retiree uh what am i what I call myself retired uh productivity guru you used to see it all the time where people are like some people are fucking born managers accountability thing because we use y you care what words mean and this is one word that I really really It means the general accounting office. of course out of college at that time, but I was still friends with my academic sponsor and he was like, Yeah, you fucked up. In fact, you know, you're getting to something deeper though, I think, which is like and again I I I see this all as being very related to what what I was just talking about with computer people, which is that Like when you show up at the party, I'm not saying you gotta be the life of the party, but are you doing everything you can to make this a good party, starting with bringing ice, not being early?

not parking on the neighbor's lawn. And in fact, quite ironically, in some ways, you you're not there to be entertained and amused by everybody. And like you don't just get to go in and like fade in and out and imagine that this all these hardworking lower rung people just I assume everything's fine. Where you have to get people who are just or oh succession. Right? What we'll tell we'll I've got this trusted staff that will take care of this and it just all seems to a civilian like me, it just all seems so odd that you could stay in a position like that behaving so Uh she is the perfect example of someone who was in a programming position, has all of this talent and creativity, but then the From priest to homeless or something like that.

Well I'm not sure exactly where I'm going with this, but where you see somebody who has gotten into a position where they did not fully understand e just even internally kind of what the project was likely to become and what they would need to do and keep doing well. He's always screwing things up. Oh god, this is such a boring, like intrapsych thing, but it's such a huge deal. You're looking way too far down the line to understand somebody. Well, obvious I hope it's obvious. Is this what I think it is? Like or s a strong emotional association that we have with that. Uh uh we all fail all the time. towardness. or like a thanks I hate it meme. I mean are you talking about something that needs a name.

Guess where I want to be? Fucking funny. to how to be a member for uh uh 20 minutes. You've got me. I still have the ring Wait, why am I laughing I don't get this reference? Every character if you're on a if you're a character on an Apple TV show, you're either a wife with a dead husband or a wife whose husband will be dead soon. It's like I don't name five shows that are like that and yet that feels completely true to me. I guess you'd be me. That just because you fucking pasted it in on your goddamn phone with your thumbs and didn't test it, you have no way to know that that link breaks everything. Do you know how many times it broke? Here's my reason. I didn't realize there was a parentheses.

Oh that's a really good idea. He shoots a fucking grappling hook up the side of a sandcrawler and then climbs up the side like Adam West in Batman. And then he's got this thing that looks like a fondue fork that shoots bullets and rays and electricity. We're several years into Mandalorian and everybody's sick of Baby Yoda. about Gregu is how fucking cute he moves. I have just just do the show we're doing. uh these have sort of changed over time, but the ideas we uh we we suggest usually in the after show we'll we visit with each other and we say like what should we do for next time and you know it's something uh the the challenges aren't as challenging as they used to be. That's from um April of 2019, I remember that.

It's this when it's a little bit more than a little bit. fun with puppies. And I wrote down last one is goldfinger commentary. Uh, no. Oh my god, I'm I'm on I'm on bad terms with Casey. And now I'm um I'm I'm s oh oh there's Grogu who I oh god he's so cute He's sitting on my drive look at his eyes isn't he cute Air gap networking. I have a question for you. and then barely say it, and mostly use tiny pictures of slightly different facial expressions, but don't use the tiny pictures incorrectly. First of all, the disclaimer that this person says theoretically speaking, I'm a Gen Z, but I could never identify myself as one, blah blah blah. I don't know if I can send this to you like this. It was so fast I have to write this a compilation of all the modern netiquettes to educate myself and many others I've done.

I I I uh I mean I assume that there's not a period uh period. has been set. It looks dead in the eye. Having seen something, I imagine. You better reply to my message. Spont, at least if you were trying to do it. I like I write it in drafts and then I paste it in later and I'm like, oh, I don't want to forget to write back to John. Like the smiley face is true. How to break up with a friend. Uh uh but she came back hard though of like, no no no, this is how you do it. Fuck it. Oh you shouldn't you're not supposed to do that. I think Marco's faking a lot when he claims not to have seen something. I I was gonna say dressed like a Boy Scout, but that's not exactly it. But you would have to explain so many things for me to feel like I belong here and I don't think I do.

Fuck out of me, then. Yeah, typically when uh someone's on a dating app. It's getting a little bit problematic. So when you say this, it comes across as that. But just so you know, one of the things we do with our challenges, which are admittedly a MacGuffin, is that we have uh we in the fullness of time we developed a a an idea of saying, well, like for example, if it's a TV show, you watch the first episode of the TV show. this point. a ninety second version? Isn't email an example of like I can't go back to a I can't feel good about what I'm doing until I know there's nothing in here that'll get me in trouble. through writing on this wiki thing. Good. And so like for example, if you've ever been up on a page, like of documentation, and you see that little box at the top that says warning, you know, don't do this unless you've talked to support, or you see something that says caution, don't do this unless blah blah.

and say this is an admonition of the type abstract. And I'll eventually, I guess, pare that down. Some of which come a pretty long way, and combined with plugins I hadn't used yet, but seem really obvious. Well, this abstracts that. It's not for everybody. Oh god, I need an accountable party. Because he's very stuck in his chair, no one will help him. I never want to like fuck that up. You might get to something that looks like a flowchart, but at the most basic level, it's a really canny way to basically make little piles. Yeah, it was been very, very liberating because you're selecting non-destructive. Like the stuff in the left rail it seems meaning like you're supposed to click and do something.

Or do you have a way of like saying like here's all the stuff, like do a search on here's everything related to this and drag it in? I still don't really under s I I used to think I understood what Kanban is, but now I'm n I'm increasingly not so sure. It's surprisingly easy to fuck up a table in multi-markdown. You type another one. And I hit tab, like it knows that doesn't mean just add a tab like an idiot. test tag or whatever and it's got hierarchy, it's got all that stuff. document for Alex and that's where I go and I'm clicking in list tags query you can embed tags viewed in correct. That's how you would say, for example, this is the syntax language of the code that I'm providing. Did you get what I sent you?

It's fucking bananas. Because what I first wanted was what I thought was a very obvious thing that you could do uh there's probably an easier way to do this, but a media wiki when I would make my own wikis in MediaWiki And back in those caveman days, any page that linked to that, if memory serves, became a category of that by inference. And in your Kanban, which is a way of like uh inspired by Toyota and the way that you can choose to put tasks in I don't know. And being able to present it and cite it and do all that stuff, that's all pretty, pretty useful stuff. If it had more of a sense of tableness, well guess what? You can add this one? Uh there's probably a way. Is boy I was getting so so good and I was being really good and now it's falling apart.

And so all these things really work together in in like a a pretty exciting way. In some cases, in my cases, I have a structure for the build the things I'm gonna have to do for in Obsidian. You can put look at average working hours. Yeah, I know. I'm not gonna answer your questions anymore. Who got into a position in life beyond what he probably ever expected. and then kind of in the second season and then he kinda just faded away. Yeah, um, 'cause his name is e everywhere, but you know, w that's what happens when you're um you're the creator of the show. Can't get over how little work he did and it shouldn't surprise me. Uh and and how little he cared because so often when So often when someone like, um, let's oh, let let's say Jo Joss Whedon.

in your brain. Don't you think? which whatever, but I don't know. Talk about what what a lazy asshole he was. technology and particularly in programming, and it's it's kind of a cliche, but in my experience there's some truth to it, which is that it was probably not alongside being the quarterback or the head pom-pom girl. you know, human he always he always kinda sloughs it off and he's like, well, you know, I manage it's a distinction it's a subtle distinction, but there's a distinction between like being like say a sales manager versus managing a team on a project. My wife is a great manager. Right. And you know, it's just that it fascinates me because yeah, I have seen it, like in my actual career, that there are people who were are very gifted I'm also though, I'm also the person who might have to go and say you're not not supposed to park there or something.

I think when you go into a career, if you'd said this said to young Justin a long time ago, hey, guess what? don't like how it's morphed into something that's basically yeah. Well, but in it. I agree with you. s like social ladder and need to be part of the same community in order to hold someone uh accountable. Or for that matter, like going to a party. Uh uh uh B ye oh you did the thing. Yeah, good and and you know what? Yeah, that would you would you have guessed that? Mmm, there are a lot of people in my life who gently holds me accountable, but there's because I don't know if you you know this, Merlin, but Sometimes um kind of let the mental illness win, which is not an excuse, but a reason for a lot of my inconsistent and erratic behavior, which Or that people are deliberately being like some certain way that annoys, hurts, or inconveniences us.

That is happening a lot more often than we're thinking about our quote unquote motivation. That is how I have always d lived my life, but there are definitely periods in which it has been like that, but more so it's I think your cognition is a little disordered sometimes. I it maybe it just annoys me. You move your body forward and then with your feet, you push yourself back. Well, that first one is up is called positive feedback. And so, but the problem is when we say positive, we say negative. idea of doing I something I think is the right thing to do, or am I not doing something because I'm hiding out like a little Justin Royalist? So like if you think about the three dimensions that most of us can see in the world, there's this one tiny little like they explain this to you in in math class, right?

But it's defined by its placement in three dimensions. And I do, um, trying to get away from one point in the universe is much more difficult than it sounds because basically that makes the rest of the universe wherever to move toward a certain thing. This day shall gentle their condition. Indeed. Deep respect for whatever Baz Lerman had going on with Mercuccio in the whole party scene. They uh I uh you know what? feel that way about that that's why I think it is a a bit to do it in passing because I think okay Oh no it's a good bit. His hair's swoopy, swoopy underface. Watching that you paid for and you're seeing an ad to please pay for what you're watching and it's like God it's so sweaty. to do a podcast commentary in a funny way.

It I think it could be done better. of it, etc. I refuse to put it in. Maybe while I'm doing my six skateboard boom moves or something. car it would be deep. Uh huh. And it's so fun and so well done. Boba Fett in particular, but you know, the idea of a Mandalorian, how cool that was to somebody who was like a t a uh uh a teen or a preteen. Is oh that's like when people are saving the Bible. Beer, but it's very lightly edited. But anybody want to tell me the story of Ruth off the dome? And these are ideas for challenges. Because I know how to Google things. It was the like thing that has two you you lie on the floor like you would the mat, but it's just like two bulbous thing. And it had ears like Dobby or Grogu.

I don't even know what that is, but he's Oh he's good. It was it was good. That when when Mary Oliver reads the poem about her dog, oh God. Yeah. Uh well he sent it to you and you ignored him. Huh. I regret not taking it. I did not know that I I did not know it was a literal uh interpretation. A literal interpretation. Yes. Gen Z, like when you see those things, or like here's the truth about Tide Pods. And then I'm gonna tell you what I said, and then I'm gonna share with you what it is that I that I'm that I'm looking at here. And the headline of the article is number 89, pound sign 89, number 89, 10 rules of productive online communication dash an honest guide. And it's it's not there's of course now your first clue, there's a lot of clues in what I just read you, and the one that you didn't get from context that I will give you is that it is not set in title case.

Please do. I said something like, uh uh another one of these generational false flag operations. Very wholesome and reasonable, I'm in. Um, and then the person's using um Slack style emoji colon things, sob in retrospective voice. This person no, no. Just so you can see the way it's it's set. Because I still do use emoticons, as we used to call it. And I guess if you respond you have to use an emoji, correct? 2011, I would not open someone's Snapchat message because then you do you uh you have an obligation to respond. out because I was that bad about it. Like the vine, right? I mean th that is a a real thing that like I I I but that's not like a god. False flag. is about once you get into the whole like and by the way, so here's how you're allowed to talk to me and other people.

just because you contacted them. My mind is blown by this mostly because I cannot imagine a a d a j generational Zed person writing it. Now, let me put this slightly differently. Um and by the way, oh sorry, sorry, follow up, follow up, follow up. And uh but uh uh they said no, but that is an interesting idea. Having a sense of decency. You've broken up with friends. Okay. That means you seriously want to be laid off, and now you bring some gloomy cloud to the convo. And that's why I never got any success there. it might be too obvious to say and it's not very kind, but when I read when I read something like this, honestly, the thing that I mostly walk I I do get the sense of like and you know, this comes from my own background.

I I I think what this person is trying to say in a not particularly lucid way is here's how you should talk to me. And the the the um you know the the sort of the the the promise in t terms of like storytelling. is fluent in English and just writing a terrible, terrible piece. podcast is that like I don't want to be unkind to this person. You know what? There's not really any sense here other than here's a handful of things I learned. So the challenge was to read the video. Um, and just the idea that noticing the sort of um phrases or patterns that repeat in in the way that I think about and talk about anxiety and the problems that it causes for me. The the example I gave last week that's still one of the better examples is that noticing sort of family relationships between different sorts of feelings or phenomena or examples, patterns, traumas, right?

So I know that the example I gave last week that's as good as it gets probably is that there's a thing called um scanning the horizon that I've said a lot. anxiety. th uh a thing to be anxious about, if you like, would be one way to put it. And so now you are hyper-vigilant and you're s you stop everything. You were like, oh, what's a personal what what personal um wiki was? And then I was like, ooh, Merlin's gonna be writing. It's okay, it's our show. Uh the they call them plugins, right? I love this here, so dumb, and yet I love it. Ban a banner? Um, so what I did was I actually created a, of course, I created a page. Doing a mind map is a great way for me to like sort of organize my thoughts, but at some point I have to transition out of that and get into the writing part.

I okay, canvas. U can't be. But what you can do is put them on the screen as if they are n note cards. Or sorry, block style note-taking only because like mind maps it doesn't really work with my brain. charts or g graph type things. Do you do you grab a bunch of something and just drag it into a canvas and then play with it? and replicability, how plugins want to be used, and there's that. Because why would I want to know this? Um, I don't know how advanced tables works. like treating markdown tables almost like a spreadsheet. Like as you're typing, you're so you type a pipe, you say a word. And it's already done the pipe. It's no more, it's not much more, I want to say it's not much more difficult than doing the sort of functional markdown writing where you use, say, inline URLs.

a la blot to imply structure or more the the the easiest way or the simplest way perhaps is tags which is where you can expressly in the document with a little octothorp you say hashtag deliberate metadata in your stuff, usually tags, but it could be other things. Right? Or excuse me, um, tasks, right? All right, here's a let me just can I just send you a couple as just like little examples. And I want you to sort it ascending by the year it was published. So if I create a new text file and I in the metadata or wherever, but for me the metadata in the YAML uh area, if I create a a new thing and I it's called pound sign sources slash books. And a similar thing happens here, which is like for any of your documents, you can just read it like a regular fucking document and never know that there's YAML in there.

Like for talk about a thousand flowers blooming. Now there's other plugins we need to talk about. That's a little over my pay grade right now, but just template the idea. Has this YAML metadata in it. There's one called I don't know if it's installed on this one yet, but basically it's a metadata editing plugin that also works with the anything key. Uh but I have not found a way to make sure that all plugins are installed on every instance of this. and then discover that, for example, like there's been some kind of a slight change in direction and a a page that's been like a really important part of the project. Mm-hmm. Well what about with tags don't you ever want to refactor your tags and merge and clean up and and do all those things?

Fucking fucking APA? There's that. Hello. I had indeed. And really probably doesn't have any idea why life is so difficult for him. given from above even but but he wasn't doing anything. gross to not just women, but s it seemed to be like kind of a bully to everybody. Right. He couldn't didn't have the budget for what he wanted to do and I don't think he's sandbagging. famous and craw across a literal criminal line, which is why, you know, it's okay for staff and and folks to come Where, you know what I mean? And I'm really not saying that to be mean, but that it was so it was such a frustration to so many people I know who were even good with people that until I don't know 15 years ago, there wasn't a path to moving up.

But you know, then so what do you do? But you're also gonna have to learn how to deal with different people's motivations, skills, tastes, energy, like all those different things. wouldn't side because there are a lot of people in show business, especially show runners, who learn difficult lessons. for my career, but I also need to know when I fucked up to be like a less kind of toxic human being. extreme consequent I can say I'm not trying to like it's not a cancel thing. like um Pendleton or Dan Harmon. high profile work, I mean, what does that kind of teach you that something must be working? All I wanted to say in this letter was, hey, I think we should what I would have said in a different oh we never would have sent it, uh but what uh what I should have said was, hey in terms of the workplace, you're you're there to like say as as I've liked to phrase it, what gets what's what's tolerated and what gets rewarded.

Mm-hmm. If someone is a poppy, that uh uh this this doesn't make sense out of uh context. or um a lot of creative companies because people are weirdos and when your peers are also weirdos it's Uh and uh well, yes, but also w weirdos who don't know how to handle a staff long term and has no one to She's gonna go down and talk to the programmers and get them all really motivated. to be uh the uh you know the big boss in charge. It's not a great show, but it is very well done. the Michael Sheen character is not the best manager in a number of ways. says to Bo Bridges, uh, you know, I never meant to hurt. You're asking if I'm depressed. um thinking about accountability actually uh f for myself and how I I'm I think you're being a little hard on yourself.

scary and a bummer. Oh yeah, it is. There's all this like speculation we do about other people, I feel like. that it's like, all right, are these decisions I am making, whatever it is. But I think the s better answer is one out of uh li even if you don't want to use the term l love, but like to me the idea of like so love and hate, well I'm gonna go to the things I love and stay away from the things I Wait, God forbid this is someone's first episode. Long story short, it was a a piece of very medium or substack-esque piece that I really enjoyed that was just talking about like the way this person phrases it instead of thinking, what was it, uh as against What was the the phrases that he was trying to replace?

Because negative, did you know that the kind of self-talk and negative thinking that we do is a positive feedback loop? into this very unpalatable burger over and over. The the am I doing this out of love or am I doing this out of hate? So it doesn't point. What I mean, what is a normal Dubai Friday episode? No. Did you watch that with uh Barbajish Cumberjet? Yes. Uh yeah, yeah. the the weird th thing of the the constant like okay I do already support your member I I am already a member. Um we have a challenge each week. You don't know I don't know what it's there. Oh God, I uh I still think there is a way. Um uh the first time. like four commentaries. Funny you should say that. And I said, I I Alex knows this, but I look over Alex's stuff, and I'll tell you why.

Yeah I well yeah that's not true. You're doing a lot of things at once. Oh, so do you remember um Cassian has uh he has a Starlink that's still sealed and he wants to sell it to Dr. Oh, does she sh uh is she like mm-hmm? Technically not a gun. See, I just realized th this is my second half of Hamilton, I think. The episodes. Oh, show notes, show notes. Which is probably better. S Dardate, one year after Trump announced three three months before he won. agreed that sil the silkworm album was perfect. No, no. We were watching the puppy bowl on HBO yesterday. Um iOS thirteen on iPad when the I when we were all trying so hard. Oh yeah, the uh U Haul Lesbian moment. And we were oh god. Uh, I believe it is on hold at the moment.

Uh I I did I'm afraid to plug it in, but I saw one of these on the floor outside or the floor, on the street outside of an Apple store. You see a piece, and it's about how people are. Now what I love about this and Alex the the the admonition to never end a sentence with a period could you describe to me the way that that is has been set here Well thank you, Ferdinand de Saussure, and your structuralism. If you seen it, comma, reply it, comma. Like I this stuff does make I think they are referring to both Instagram and It sounds like they're telling dumb 14 year olds how to do this rather than learned 50 year olds. It's yeah, it it it they're explaining l the social mores more. you know, be because yes, there are times where I will not uh I I back back in the ye olden days of uh uh to During a verbal conversation of convo, that's a word, a simple okay is sufficient.

Because I guess people have capitalization turned off and so only on Yep. Wait, why is wait why is that bad? They would like you to give them money on something called Momo or Viet Vietcom Bank or PayPal or Patreon. Anyways, so but like did I did I did I make a tell me please just tell me I made a good decision to think of this as a sort of a false flag to not get publicly enraged about. What? C correct. I just want to be honest and upfront so I don't disappoint your expectations. how uh it was perceived and uh she was bullied off the internet for a while which always makes me say The okay I guess we're gonna do a video about how to be through too strong. about you. Which um that that's a different meaning.

the the just just act of it's it's more than a single event. I is there anything about t tone in indicator? um difficult for you to understand and I'm gonna give you a guide with analogous examples that will help you understand how this comes across. people, this is how to No, well see no, but that doesn't make sense because then it would be like, hey, uh if you speak a different language, you might want to interpret it like this. Like, oh, this was ri oh, oh, they're a productivity yeah. This see this makes me uh angry in the sense of like this is just something, this is content, this is feeding the machine. Ha ha ha ha uh Um I just I uh used it as not as intended, but as I always And you know, just in passing, can I also just say I understand.

It does seem from a distance that all seems very silly. Um, I realize these things come up a lot. You know what? adjacent to this but not related to this. the seeking of new information w with an implicit goal of feeling less stressed out often makes it worse because why? of like uh every structure in your life for like where that threat is hiding. And I think scanning the horizon is a form of checking in. Are there siblings, parents, or children of those ideas that are related? You seem to be scanning the horizon for something that has the shape of your undoing. And so the idea is not to catalog all of that and turn it into a textbook, but it is a way of trying to understand my interior world by expressing it externally.

What what uh what was different that well I can talk all you want. for thinking about this be decided this is the kind of thing y'all might want to play with, like a model for turning this into something that you might be surprised that it can do that's effective for lots of things. Is that okay? Like well we talked about that. Um the uh t the one that I have not gotten in in a second I'm gonna describe something powerful. 'Cause it's easier to to search, especially with like tag plus or whatever it's called. Barely. southeastern United States of cells that just disappeared for some reason and you're like, what happened? To me the gorilla, the the m one of the most powerful things, this really could be its own separate app, is something called data view.

Meaning in my case, text files about my brain, right? And of course, as we talked about last week, there are different ways you can choose to organize things in Obsidian or to envision things in Obsidian. And it has documentation. Models for making a wiki or a structured set of documents include options include links to infer or sorry, links to imply categories, folders. It will be unsurprising you to you to know, aha. So data view of the type list from either the tag anti-patterns or the tag categories. That'll automatically appear in this list. And so that's how I discovered the second most popular plugin in all of Obsidian and what you can do with this. You know, um, but this is this app's come a long way amongst other things you can do stuff with a source view versus a reading view versus these different views, so you can see like what this stuff looks like Because you make some things plural and some things not.

I don't know. kind of database. It it's makes it easier to sync up the tracks and it's more fun than clapping. I think this is what the show is now. Um I was just saying the impression that I get uh is that he is a very poorly socialized man child. 45 PM Central. Yes, yes. I mean, he didn't come off as a villain. uh o oblivious nature to how to treat people because you know, when you get uh famous and rich when you're young, I think something like breaks I think there's mm a big difference between couldn't and wouldn't, obviously, and then this piece leans, I think, towards the You you don't you don't a 22-year-old kid does not write to a 60-year-old retired general and use a word like accountability.

Is it just something that they're both so weirdly dysfunctional in their own way that they have this self-healing mechanism where Dan Harmon goes, well, I guess this is long story short, to like kill a project, in this case this film on CBS that was gonna happen. I aga again things are m uh hopefully I'm gonna be back on the horse for a while. Luckily, has not done too much harm. scary place, I'm like, okay, even if I don't know if this decision makes any logical sense, am I doing it bec b because either way it could be not real. out of positivity or anything other than fear or anger. Something along occasionally. Um feet well what is feedback, right? And you get the, you know, the the trope of the person walking up, you know, that's feedback and that's a positive feedback loop.

you're running to anywhere in the unit. having a plan for what you're moving toward. Oh Bas Lervit. famous than it should be. about all of the media I consume. Um so lo so we have challenges and we have a a a a uh uh uh uh uh I don't call it Google Drive, I call it Google Sheets It's just called Google wait, so is it Google Drive spreadsheet? And uh we'll see how that goes. That's race. The easiest part of being a DoorDasher, uh, but the biggest suggestion I have, be white. So what we do is the the MacGuffin for this show, it's kind of like the Starlink uh unit in Andor. It's they're okay. His little eyes and he wants to eat the frog and then he gets too much. No, no, you just sit or sorry, you lie on it.

Recording a podcast where two people are in the same space and uh someone is remote is a bad idea and no one should do should do it. How how would you put it? What? I've heard this one before. And you you, you know, and all all the like old man stuff about capitalization imperials. This this makes way more sense. I wasn't going to, I told you so, but I did email support and I'm like, I'm so dumb. before I made a blog. Oh she's a doctor, that's cool. But but the world that you are in, it would like it would be like in a a scene in an eighties movie where you go into a super gay SM club. Well, like if by revisiting you mean just using it in the normal way? No, I so so I and I know when my when my partner when my my partner peanut buttered didn't even send me in a mojo.

And so like the a person with anxiety feels like to feel safe or to feel relaxed or to feel normal, you always need more information. A very, very small realization worth almost nothing to anyone is that, holy shit, ain't that email? You think about that dumb bit in a movie where there's like a cell phone call that got cut off and somebody misunderstood what someone said on a phone call. More than that, I guess. the thingness of it. Yes. There are things, there are a lot of editors and IDEs that have a sense of multi-markdown tables, and we'll do stuff like on save, we'll like automatically clean it up, take out spaces, make it easier to read. You know, the that's called a tick, right? Like on ever huh.

Uh confused it with the case. people who are producers in name only typically function, especially if it's a sitcom or an animated show. If you have d uh do you don't you ever have to deal with somebody who has like BO or who like eats weird food at their desk or says inappropriate things like how do you deal with that? oddballs who are good at doing s many aspects of technology, who are the last people in the world that should ever interact with people, let alone manage people. Um and sp and you have to like live. Um bizarrely. or on Mythic Quests. So when you're in the bathtub and you're a little kid and it's half full of water and I don't know if you did this. We few, we happy few, we band of they.

Um, let's see. Okay. We've lost money a lot over the years. It's not even that. Um Can you tell that I was on my phone and then I couldn't get things to auto-complete and I was uh pre-doing a challenge of using a third party keyboard on my phone. required doing things in the real world. And I said, No, remind me, he said, because their organs are too big for their body. I hate that I know that. Th this is yeah, it it i they're mixing facts of uh w like you c most phones capitalize things. Yeah, yeah. uh reenactment of how to break up with a friend. It's uh alright, I gotta do you open a TikTok on your device? I don't have the capacity to invest in our friendship any longer. Oh, this is real, right?

understanding how people are talking to to them. Or I will uh be mad and not tell you. Because Substack has an algorithm now. challenge was inspired because you started making a anxiety wiki and you were you you were like well what should I use ha have I just uh almond buttered because that's not still not no no I feel like and just for our new listeners I don't know why we would have new listeners See, I want the five-hour version and I just want you to go go off, King. Expectations. Um, but I feel like the linchpin for what I think is great about this comes down to a plugin called Data View. you can put a canvas on the a canvas and then you can put a canvas in a canvas. That are crazy interesting to me, but do represent a There Be Dragons moment for me.

on a page. Uh there's like a whole templating language. space for YAML metadata. Tag Wrangler. But isn't that kinda neat, the data view thing? Like s if you say someone like Justin Royland needs to be held accountable. Which is that um Logan and Kendall are gonna have to go and persuade this huge investor that everything is fine. The dog vagina scar? Mm-hmm. Because uh, you know what? Okay, here we go. Did you know Hamlet's very good? I was between if it's between Merlin Mann yelling at me and I I've yet to have someone yell at me uh for uh for a DoorDash delivery which makes me feel very good. And I realized last night that season one of Mandalorian might be my favorite Western. That was one of the greatest moments on this show.

And the my my so actually I I wrote several lines about this. Um yeah, you've only got 15,000 of them. Um 10 rules of productive online communication dash an honest guide. Okay, now though, so that's all some bullshit that I could just whatever. I don't know. Number 10, Alex, finally, if I tag you on my story on Instagram, you must repost. For some reason, not using emojis can be seen as not being emotionally invested in the conversation. And I am You stuck do you stick with it this whole time? If it's a book, you read the first chapter or whatever the book. Good Lord. That's why I say, for example, scanning the horizon is an example or a pattern of what I would call anti-pattern, of what I would call checking in.

Right? Like it's really intuitive. Shit. You're cool with YAML metadata, as we've learned from bot. You could put all those ingredients in there. I disagree. Which is not a word that you use with a one-star general because why, Alex? Oh, the Jack Dorsey visit as a kind of Sure, yeah, yeah. And and he's having a drink after he's basically gotten his old boss, Bo Bridges, who he blackmailed in season one, to basically why I have my stup not my stupid theme, I like my little the theme from uh the Cortex people. And if we decide that that point is let's go straight to the challenge, right? That there's so much good stuff. Ready? Anyway, that's what we do. Which is fine. And Alex, the the the admonition to never end a sentence with a period, could you describe to me the way that that is Texting strips off the physical emotions, which are an important factor for meaning interpretation.

Number four. Which I think is an emoticon. I I mean i the I I am uh a horrible writer despite loving writing, but and I think if this was written as if Of all the documents that meet this criteria, sort them by this, group them by that. Um, but you can do that and that's all still just marked down. I got you a new toy you can play with for the rest of the meeting. It's just too long. And I do need to fix the way that we sort things so we don't lose our order. And then he proceeds for probably two minutes to read a list of things and every single item on the list you go, oh yeah that. For smiling. The uh Karen feeding of I I don't think I know what that's Alex, do you have an introvert in your life?

Didn't you learn your place? Alright, hold hold up real quick because I think uh you are underselling Canvas, which yes. Like, oh, the body keeps the score, unsurprisingly, is in here. No. And that was kind of one of those inside I don't want to even say an inside secret, but a a f frustration amongst the writer's room, especially because you know his So I'm not trying to make a stereotype. lol to go to my affiliate link and then I f uh you didn't do that. Nobody's ever loved Mon Mothama as much as I do. Tiff. I'm having so much trouble understanding your words right now. I'm gonna be real mean about this. And this is more of a way of saying, well, when I look at things like uh I discover patterns, I discover categories, I discover things, I notice the falling asleep process, as I mentioned.

I scan the horizon, which is like whether I want to or not, for whatever reason, I'm always looking for the thing Yeah, well well they can write a medium piece about it. And yet you always do. Right. That's the point. Uh it's kinda sh this they have to have I won't spoil it for you, but they have to have basically a Jawa meeting. But anyway, this one where they saw this it was a oh my god it was the cutest mix. That that led to that oh god, that was another thing that led to my big uh Vonnegut re-read. That's how they get you. Um when you see D-A-T-I-N-G. Which brings us to an awkward point, which is this can either be, if it's on me, as the person returning, just for what it's worth, this can either be like 90 seconds or five hours.

Um things that I discovered. Yeah, yes. Um what crazy? Go get a plugin called um quick add. And there's such a negative c uh uh connotation uh to it of like yeah, yeah. I can't remember. Uh, read the first trade paperback of Lumberjanes. Isn't that when you Edward Snowden your computer and you like put you you put uh hot glue gum in gum in the u hot glue gum in the USB? I'm letting you know that the world has decided who you are and your continued resistance to agreeing to disappear for almost no reason. That's an example of checking in. Oh no, I haven't sent it yet. Maybe it's just a best practice, but I believe weird things because I went to weird Lebard school in the South. Are you early or am I late?

And you use accountability a lot. Oh that's right. I'm gonna go all the way back. Uh rem I also got well there was, you know, it was like suggestion uh su purchase suggestions, but there was one for uh headaches I and but for a reason, because you know, m I mean, uh I don't like making eye contact with most people. I no, this was literally months and months and months ago. Uh I mean there are some e exceptions, but I think I saw one yesterday, Alex. It's probably somebody your age. Excalidra, an amazing thing for doing drawings, just freehand drawings from the web, and it also works in your documents. Well, now what are you gonna do? And let me see. I'll put this I'll put this in those cards.

Like when you like it, when you get Avengers, if you watch his, I I do love his commentary on Avengers, as I've mentioned, because the entire time all he talks about is how this didn't turn out the way he wanted. That they weren't here, that fought with they upon St. But like, but it doesn't like take away when Roger Ebert, quote unquote, talks over Citizen Kane, the greatest film, second greatest film commentary of all time after Goldfinger, you can still watch the movie and they're not like talking the whole time. Oh I thought it was a bit. Oh, rare myths. I don't think it is a good match for Jason Snell because it's not what he needs. Madison now? And when you're a producer, when you go from being anything to being a producer, your life becomes your career becomes all about like dealing with shit.

I mean that is again Justin Royland didn't have to deal with the shit. It doesn't sound mean. Okay. I I'm gonna assume he's Dutch. My reason is for some reason I'm a DoorDash delivery person now and I was doing the work. No, it's just you and me. This is where we start really getting into my wheelhouse of shit I don't fucking understand. Oh my goodness. Oh, it's fucking magic, Alex. What is it? Like a Syracusean situation. Oh no, no, no, not in a bad way. And sometimes it takes big strong man with a big strong computer to actually open things up and see how that one breaking Reread that. Like somebody who's like a like a bad inf like you somebody you don't want in your life anymore. Then give us your fucking money.

Expectations are high. It's already like fixing things as you go. What was I wearing? Let alone did I make two connections that cause me to remember something and integrate information in the moment, while my brain is probably, I don't know, singing the hallelujah chorus, you know, in the back of my head or something. And I don't love the way that's phrased, but I've never heard I I don't think I know a better way to put it. Anywhere in the universe that's not that one point. Romeo plus Romeo plus Juliet 1996. You should you should you should write this up. I I think the problem with the puppy bowl is that people that like I I would look at something like the doggist and say like oh this person understands what people love about dogs more than the puppy bull people.

Here's the here's here's what right before I close my phone. Um so I'd love to talk more about I could talk more about the content of this, but by the nature of the challenge this week, what I focused on was um something I was already doing, which is playing with installing, configuring. So that you can have that's called an ad in in this platform, it's called an admonition. You're probably a young person struggling to get good at writing and I was being unsupportive. He's always messing with uh the Lizzie Kaplan character, uh, who he's not having an affair with. I saw that in the document. Say something along the lessons. Wow. So do I d d I feel like I I learned this from you. With the cupcake with K on it.

But so often I read through this and I'm not even trying to be that like, oh you're a snowflake. Yes. Holy shit. I I I I can tell that I'm really close to pushing my luck, but so far I've gotten my wife to watch three episodes of Andor and one episode last night of The Mandalorian. Oh of course I did. If this doesn't go through, let me know. But not replying can mean a lot of things, but none of those carry positive messages. Did they not do the text her without using emojis? Uh give us your fucking money dot com. I tried, I tried to do it, because you're on your phone, because you like using your phone. And right now they're on nine. I feel like you have a sort of like, oh, that's just a generational thirst trap.

I know about ghosting. Um Zotero's so fucking good. I always forget. But wasn't it kind of an interesting like, I don't know, it gave me lots of context. I don't assume it's because you hate me and want to undermine the show. Like it just seems like it must be hard sometimes. That's what this person said. It can go in any direction in three dimensions. No. Insane okay, this is this is my son's uh review. I enjoy the album rumors. Technically not a gun. And I th for some reason the uh the big studio w uh was um being used by someone else. Uh but it was one of the things that I've got to do. A literal or a literal metaph I don't know I don't know why I use the word interpretation. Which is fine.

Um, but it is oh god. So if you break your ankle or something, you're good. I'm I'm genuinely actually I d I I don't think I want answers, but what would a ninety second version before? No, no, no, no, no, no, put it on time, keep going and so and so just being able to have a basically a crazy wall of uh dot MD files Instead of list, this one is table. Have you gotten tag Wrangler? I like looking at him. Like you you're not in there like holding up steak knives and yelling at people, but you still have to like and I can never get Syracuse to answer this, but like what happened what have you done in the And they're gonna be like singing? I did have to go into a building where it was like clearly if I was not white it would not have been possible to get like it just That's the biggest I've I false flag, false flag.

False flag. Did she rescind her degree? Mm-hmm. So like um the thingness for me in a lot of places, the the monad, as I said, is like the writing in a text file. But it's usually like a pipe, a space. You know I adore you personally, but no, no. Oh do you remember the Elliot Rosewater Challenge? I think this person is trying to help. And I'm like, um, I'm not sure this is for me. There's a lot of ways that just being at a party has a kind of responsibility to it. With HBL less so, but only because I I I do like the shows that they're showing. So if you want to watch Edgar Wright and the tech team talk about the movie while it's on, you can do that. The little lord and I. I don't know. Yep, this is real.

And it it unlike a lot of things, including some VS Code extensions, it understands that when I tab, that doesn't mean I'm so I just type something in brackets. The same way that you would write a query in MySQL or Access or whatever. Doesn't that seem wild? Billy watched uh Billy watched uh Romeo plus Juliet in uh drama. I don't know what's funny about somebody being married to a train, but you get funny that somebody still wears the ring when they're not over it. I didn't realize there was parentheses in the URL for the Wikipedia link and it fucking broke everything because I'm on my skateboard and I don't care. Uh wait, really? And just so y'all know, so this is a Google spreadsheet. Huh. And that's what brought me back to Obsidian.

Just look at what I was wearing. He bites on the lemon. We need to get to Moss Isley. Oh that's that is We started watching movies just so Billy will have something to review, so I think I am finally raising a blogger. Like Hamlet is too famous for a reason. And you link to this one twice and you link to this one wrong. I love using my phone. It's passive aggressive. Haven't you learned who you are? If this were better written, I wouldn't have minded it. Yeah, I mean it's just a I think it's just it's mainly a way to embellish uh what you're doing with different things. Is you c you come on and you do your you do your bit and then and then we talk about recordings in time. That has never happened with It happens every week.

But what surprised me the most was how much leeway he was You move up and you become somebody at like a I don't know the all the levels, but like a certain level and you're like, Well, I'm still doing some coding stuff, I'm still mentoring. I I just I think Romeo and Juliet is a slightly overrated play. Uh and I on that type of show that has fewer listeners might admit that I've only read one Shakespeare play, and even in that case it wasn't a very good one. Let's see who has access. Oh no. I've started doing that with Mark on Red in messages. That is incredibly toxic shit. Didn't didn't you learn haven't you learned who the world decided you are? Yeah. But we also started talking specifically about the canvas idea.

You start typing in another pipe and it's fixing it up as you go. That's why you didn't get it. I don't know of a way to hook this up with Zotero, though that would be cool, right? That's pretty great, right? Uh people who get into people who of my age, for example, who like computers Oh yeah. And I'm enjoying it a lot. Instead I'll say like, oh, I well what is it I well if I hate it, well let's explore that. Nobody likes Mon Mothma's cool blue car as much nobody has ever loved Mon Mothma's blue fucking space car as much as I do. Well, this is at, I'm looking at it in reader, so I don't have any context. If you see it reply If you've seen it, reply it. But I'm getting better. Is it is it I'm not gonna click.

Have you have oh god this is um this is supposedly something that was made in good faith, but did you see the therapist But I I do remember I think it was his website in particular where I first saw the link to the care and feeding of your interest. When you say, but if you had said that, it would come across as this. Yeah. Oh, cuz the what you're you're seeing part two. Yeah. Fucking Chicago. He came off as a fucking child. She could manage anybody at anything because she's good at all the things. Yes, claps claps for uh Dan Harmon. Especially if you're feeling emotional. I don't know. Follow a bunch of reporters from political Twitter for a week. Don't ever send that. No, I wasn't talking about you.

I couldn't use MediaWiki. And long story short, what I'd realized was like I do want to keep like doing the writing the way that I write. And so like that's why a mind map, a pure, actual, real-ish, not officially Tony Bazon approved, but Tell me about canvas. And and just so we know just if you do tables and markdown like I do, I can highly recommend something by it wasn't Brent Brett, it's the other guy who's really great. So template, right? You're just gonna find and replace everywhere? So if you were tracking data in this, it can do that for you too. You know like on a cop show when CID comes in? Yeah. Oh, you sure you hate that? A thing where it's so much the name that like that that's what it is.

Oh oh can't relate. Wait, wait, wait, let me get this straight. Oh, that'd be fun. We officially renamed it that. You're uh multitasking as uh you know, you used to talk about when you were um a productivity. And so as we as it occurs to us we write more of these down, we now have 920 something of these. Um what is this Wikipedia? Ghosting's when you don't respond to someone. But um I c I want to talk about a couple of things just quickly. That's how we ended up here is I ended up saying that like hang on sorry I ran over my headphone cord and now I'm stuck. What I am trying to say is that for a long time inside of organizations and teams, the only as you know, the only way to move up in a tech team was to go from being a practitioner Like I say, like people show up at a party and are like, okay, this party sucks.

Yeah. Maybe it represents a pattern I'm sick of seeing. I am so upset with myself. I don't know. I almost mistaken props. Um, you have a blog, so I can tell you what to publish. So I would be happy to talk about this more in the after show. I I opened the plugin thing and it was like. Have you have you done this much? Command P. Um like it happens automatically for me. But you know, you know my story about the letter I wrote to the head of the New College Board of Trustees, who was a retired general. And the part that I loved about it, and the part I kept beating to death, and I wasn't sure I was explaining very well, was that awayness has no aim. I don't know where he's from. It's hard to make it's hard to make a living from this show, which I'm sure you all feel extremely bad about.

Well you weren't even on the show about Top Chef. What did you see Mandalorian? Yeah, but again. Oh look at I'm kissing you, I'm kissing your cursor. Huh. I uh uh I mean uh as as a person of problems That's a different kind of thing. Mm-hmm. No, I'm installing I've I've never used it. Anything that can be metadata becomes something that you can then create these Yeah, I'm excited for advanced uh advanced table. Somebody on Twitter the other day says on what is it? It's funny you should say that because it came up last night. I don't believe it's a gun. And they're in columns. And it was kind of doing that shaky thing. And so I what I'd written down, the very first thing I wrote in this. Any kind of any way of thinking, and of course the the ultimate, the anti-pattern that I know is that the checking in doesn't help.

Merlin's gonna be writing more. And if you're doing anything computer-y with this, you don't have to type all of this. And gentle they, now a bed in England, will think themselves accursed and hold their theyhood cheap. Father John Misting, he has a song I like a lot. That means you don't want to be laid off. Oh, there we go. Cause you uh I I got excited because even though you didn't send an emoji Um, so there's plenty of tutorials. So like you can do in multi-markdown, you can make tables. No basic. I woke up this morning and said to myself, I won't have a normal episode today. Well, that is, in terms, as I understand it, I don't know if it's some kind of science, physics, that's a positive feedback loop.

I don't I don't know. How about we both do that? This is plenty. You have no idea how much good stuff is in Genesis and Exodus. But I forget oh my god, this oh wow, fake Catholic S Of course. Is Max goes, well, I have a couple things, but there aren't that really that many things that make me cry. I didn't even realize this is I'm almost gonna I almost Are you just a bit is he mad at me? Oh my god. I think it might be based on mustache, which is also what Blot uses, but you get that, you know, percent sign variable stuff. Um, it's an interesting word though. Yeah, it's not abnormal for that or the video game or any sort of gaming industry. There's kind of like a handful of people. A point is a virtually like non-existent spot in three dimensions.

I've wondered. He's absolutely well boat up till now, but I was like he's got the armor. Oh man. What the fuck does that mean? Also, I will I say this, I say this with no ill will. Now we put a sad face after that. Under a tilde? Like your negative think negative thinking. Uh oh, oh yeah, here I okay. Many Bothans died to bring you this cot podcast. And so I brought it up. Can be anything, comma, but reply it anyway. I have a feeling this is in like an ESL blog post. Expectations are low. Well guess what? I've got it on two Macs and three iPads. Yes, holy shit. I understand that because that's what you do, but but you know, here's the thing, Alec, it's like there's Like i you know what I mean?

We should do that. Here's who has access. It does work on a phone too. Listen, listen. Uh too distant. So you have to take it with a grain of salt. Um, no, no, but she is taking on new patients. I will talk about this as much or as little as you want, but I will also mention that we have been recording for, according to Mara Hijack, an hour and a half. See, I don't oh man, I'm you this week. Yes. I love that. It's all my fault. Oh yes. She's being pretty game about it. Oh, that's such a good well I mean I'll save it for the after show. Remember me shocking you guys over and over? We got a couple things that are super important from Job, but we're gonna focus a lot of our attention. So you you missed your chance.

You could uh get your put in your air gap computer, I guess. False flag. Yes. Oh did you wait first of all were you able to click the reader link or do you want the original link? I fucked up two or three weeks ago. This is real. And so I'm going to put stuff in there to make this an abstract for an article. What's the deal with canvas? And until you open it in Mark 2, in my case, you're not going to notice that there's this whole This is And I just made a database. It's it's hard to count on somebody like on succession, you you you end up with a mom, right? The performances are the cast is incredible. Another way is like, am I doing this out of a like willful, deliberate It'd be like a film commentary track, right?

Oh, I thought four hours a bit. What? Different things mean things to different people. I don't know. Feedback with audio is like when a microphone hears itself and then it hears itself hearing itself and it hears itself hearing itself hearing itself. That's really good. Alex, we're almost done. We all have to grow. Mostly it is cr creating m d visual uh piles and moving things around as if they are but when getting at those, d do you start by just dragging in one or two at a at a time? So this is why Merlin wants to learn how to make better templates. Oh jeez. He's very handsome, although he is not clean shaven. I mean like we I'm just past the age of people who would have like a Sinclair or something or the equivalent of building your own Hi Fi.

I don't know because it's not a good idea. This is huge on succession. So I mean, but situations where like I mean you you uh you've had jobs. Like that's that's a very strong word. Well, it means positive and negative. Yes. No, there's a scene at the gas station. Is that what it's called? But what they're saying is like older. Okay. It's cold. Okay, this is one hundred yeah, this is one hundred percent just someone trying to uh like get clicks. She's she's decapitalizing a lot of what you're saying. I don't know if this is a bit or if I'm actually telling you something new. Templates, so great. This is a book. Bam, bam, bam. It it can. The dog's trying to have sex with his neck scar. As a person who used to make HTML for a living, I think admonition, the admonition plugin is so cool. Have you done data view much while I'm fumbling to look for this? No, I I wanted to know what you see as a normal Dubai Friday show. I don't know. Oh yeah. No one will help him. Yeah, so if you really want to do like big stuff like that, that's great. You hit return and it knows that you want now your first real row. And what do you see see that little Oh my goodness I'm not gonna answer your questions. Especially if you're feeling emotion That's that's why I brought up that thing a few weeks ago about awayness for s Like I want a ser I I want a hypercritical Don't ever send, don't ever send a smile.

That was incredibly useful. I'm not gonna click on the case. Because I I know people I mean like I guess I'm I'm I'm elighting something that I feel like And then, as I mentioned, the idea of having this blessed area where stuff goes, now I can say to myself, well, are there other things like that? So just in the most basic model of this, so let's say I've got, you know, twenty-five files about different things. Absolutely and you make a wave and you learn very quickly. I want you to make all the guns say knife or sword on them No, no, no, no. That was where you decided you decided to be a certain way? And this is the one. And obviously starting with well, a combination of the plugins I've used before.

So what you're seeing is the commented out or you know tabbed in is the query, and then what you see under it is the result. You want to install templator because that's going to now allow you to say, oh, I want to make a book and my template for book has ISBN. So now you get a quick option. But no, but here's the thing. Fucking ninth edition, bitch. So like and admittedly I am just mostly copying and pasting from other people's stuff. Absolutely. Yeah. I'm being real. You know, th this I I grew up at a time when, at least in my household, if I said I hated something, well, my mom would say, Well I I saw this in the notes. I don't know if that's the greatest play in the English language, and I'm gonna just make the big bold statement of saying it's pretty good When you see Did you just say his name?

And maybe I'll send you a picture of this. I uh have well i sometimes in the after show the show that I don't really edit. Do it again. Oh, it gets better. But then I got to number three, Alexandra. Is it something I did? Yep, yep. I think so. We're constantly guessing what other people's motivations are. Or I can also do this weird thing where I do the opposite of that and I push against the wave and it kinda the wave dies down a little bit. You're not trying to get anywhere apart from away from the bad thing. We need to get to we need to get to Coruscant. I that's the thing. No, I think it's just you. So look that's what led me to that. Also, no, but the document not found. Number one, never end a sentence with a period.

Number five. Da-da-da-da. They didn't reply right away. Uh maybe. Another way we'd put it in the thing. Because you have it installed and you've declared that thing to be a Kanban board, it knows to do stuff with it. What? Like an army hammer, but more like more like just, you know, another one of these guys who got So you people you see people getting into these situations wonderful scene in season three. And that's not really a plan. God forbid it's your first episode. Huh huh Daddy Daddy may I have grist for my meal? It's about the guy who drew cats in the 1800s. Like like I just want a hyper critical critical I don't know how yet, but there's gotta be a way. Look at this. Yes, it it was indeed perfect.

Like like I th I thought uh perhaps this is someone who like is ESL and uh genuinely like try and be like, hey And you can yeah, you can annotate, you you can draw, but you sort of like in drafts There are some things where you can control click or command click and do a bunch of things. So I might want a template that's got for a book. Um let me go look on my other installation over here. Good. Okay. I never w mean to hurt Virginia. Oh my god, I can't do that. I think John Syracuse still has access to this, and I imagine he looks at it probably twice a week and just gets mad.

This is such a fucking fantasy of how people talk to each other. It's not what I would need for general just typing. Oh yeah. People kept, you know, giving him approval and opportunities and like he just wouldn't show up. Oh good. And I was like I was like, is that why some of the challenges suffer? We could make this public. Billy was homesick yesterday. But remember it was so funny. I'm not sure. This is the last thing I wrote and didn't post. Uh not not just don't respond, but fu This is pretty much my first draft of this, and I have not made any attempt to have any continuity about what I'm really working with. I don't know what I mean, but I know what peanut butter means. And uh the bells are ringing throughout the kingdom. Or do you do it onesie twosy? You type some things. But here's the cool part. If someone ends their sentence with a period, stop all the jokes and behave yourself cause boy B O I. That's all fine. Yeah, the question was is it fair to guess that obsidian is still what you would use to make up a small personal wiki. But let's just start with the easy stuff. But I don't need to fuck around too much with the header, the YAML data for that until I'm ready. And from what I can gather, like he's pretty good at that job. Oh, I think no, actually we did the yeah, yeah. Alex, if you've seen my story Adding stuff to other people's queue, I'm pretty sure that's in matter, not in readwise reader.

And they didn't. I believe you said anticipating uh the bumps, which I That's related as well. And it goes from merely scanning the horizon to a hard target search. That means go to the next thing. D d is it fair to say, do you feel that sometimes when you see a piece when once how do I put this? How to like do it in a civil way or decisively? Prob probably wearing Levi's and some kind of an off-brand shirt. Yeah. And like I would not be the first person who got older than they used to be and was slightly uh out of step with the way that people communicate, but Um, it's so but check this out, dude. I I have a feeling that it means a whole lot and it doesn't mean follow-up on who You see the complexity.

You just want to get that huge sum of cash. Oh. Oh, guess what? Because one of the things you can get is show installed only. It seems like it should maybe be a built-in, but Tag Wrangler makes it really easy to change and merge. I don't I I feel like I knew that this existed and just Look at the people who come in and go, How'd you fuck this up, General Hiser? Insane. I saw this sketch. I lost the bell. And this one we talked about, remember I very, very specifically said for the first time in my career on this show, I want all links Like if you know something from the Old Testament and you're some kind of fucking heathen, there's a pretty good chance it's from Genesis or Exodus.

Oh, you cleaned it up. I wouldn't care. The um uh uh oh ma'am uh You missed your chance. And I did. Okay. John wrote me a note. I was asking, hey, uh the Would that be disappointing to people? And then with citations, you know, where I'm hooked up to Zotero, it's not necessary at this point, but Why do you do this? All that kind of stuff. That's that's a weird thing to say. Uh uh not as much harm as you know, it's it's uh cognition uh especially cognition. Pretty game. That's difficult. I'm still mad at you guys about how that one went. Use the echo drop in feature. Never mind, forget it.

Netiquettes? Number two, Alex, never text without emojis. Number nine, capitalizing the first letter in a sentence will reveal where you are. Not not to like excuse how this guy is, but the thing I was just typing in you'd invited me to the meeting two minutes early before I could hit send Maybe it's that I think this is in bad faith.

I got a baby Yoda right here. Someone was using their phone when they I said these generate But then we get into all of this like, and because you're on social media, here's things you have to do now. This feels really sudden. It's a just you're you're you're gone. There's another pipe. Here's the thing. It's a good thing. Yeah. Like you can't hold someone accountable. A little more sex than I would like, but you know, it's right there in the title. Give a name for the theme? Like positive is positive, negative is negative. Oh really? Hello. That's very humorous. That makes it a whole lot easier. It never ended up or does it have a period? Oh oh I don't know how okay. I've noticed you've been withdrawn and haven't wanted to hang out recently.

What a bitch. I am I'm not as a very problematic person. Or you could say, Ha, I wish I could be laid off tomorrow, too. Yeah. And like stop stop coming to meetings Yeah, well that's why we said that. This is not a little bit of a well okay then it definitely did but never mind. You don't think that anyone likes the Mandalorian or Andor as much as you? You should write a a blog about that specific We had done ours and then Max goes, well there aren't that many we should So now I'm thinking to myself, I'm thinking, oh, I'm good. When Marco acts like what is Ghostbusters? And so you can have these cool little things inside of back ticks. Why you do need you do not need to uh ask uh permission? And they usually they I couldn't do this off the dome.

Obsidian does that for you. And then Tag Wrangler lets you do all of that. And um I thought it was well done. A point doesn't really exist. Where where John Legozama pulls out his his gun which is called Sword. Is this the one where the Dancing in the Fountain Blah blah blah. But Well see, this is why I love you and not my family, Alex. Air gap air air g air gap. If someone texts you, congratulations on your new role, and then what seems like a pretty innocuous smiley, they probably mean something along the lines of Okay. Title, is that is there a chance that there are other things like that? Can I can I just do a quick gloss on Do do your 90 now more than uh 90 seconds But at the most basic level, let's go straight to where I see this being exciting.

This is Do By Friday, a weekly challenge podcast with Alex Cox and Merlin Mann. What the thing that stood out the most to me it wasn't that Justin Royland was You're gonna get to do all this really interesting animation stuff. Um really thinking about that. Oh god, d w did I break Wikipedia? I'm not gonna fall for this one, right? I I am not saying that this is for well, th uh this video uh went viral because I don't think it's for anyone. Um It it like basically So it's like, well this party sucks because you suck. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Uh Poppy. And like and in fact as a as a as a as somebody who likes writing now, I'm I try to say that less often unless it's a joke. I I hope other people did this.

Well, you see my NoGC Ghost Rider is available on iOS now. And now I'm gonna tell you what this person tells me. Alex, if you see my story, you better reply to my message. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. And so I'll just say in passing, um templates are something It basically lets you turn your obsidian project into a Okay. So look if I ever have trouble understanding why you haven't edited the episode yet, I don't assume because This is a good one. Yeah, yeah, that's just I'm married to the ghost of a train. Oh interesting. Yes. Um I need to get better about using drafts. This is not written in the world. Okay. Hey Alex, win to the challenge? But the the point of this is that the wiki idea was to say, well I know there's a thing called checking in.

What what I'm sending you here is you'll see a couple things. Now let me give you this one. I feel like something are you are you using Obsidian Sync or are you using Draba? The whole bit is like he basically hasn't worked on Rick and Morty or Solar Opposites So um just so we're clear, I know obviously it's pre-production, we still have a lot of time to figure all this out. Like, he's he shoots flames out of his hands. Oh God, just let us love you, iOS. I didn't. This is a Gen Z addition. Which emoji for smiling? This is kind of like getting into your whole like unread thing. Kakaki was one of my hugest blogging heroes. Typically. Let me give you so here's a a quick screen grab and we can share.

This is the SPM. Because tags are also how you're doing to dos. Mmm. Well the what did you what did you get from it? Like that is a man who seemed to have similar I don't wanna say like similar behavior, but the same sort of just complete And instead, to a retired one-star general from the Army, I use the word accountability. This is just all for the box set. I'm sorry, I'm very upset. Good for you. It's fucking awesome. Wait, I don't know. That was nice. I I can't really like it Oh actually, you know what? It just wouldn't accommodate my needs. But it a language actually looks very close, very similar to like what I remember MySQL looking like. I I do believe it's valuable. No, no, I've learned.

He didn't come off like a sex man. And I shouldn't be s surprised because that's how a lot of uh Yeah, yeah, yeah. If that's the dreaded result, if that is my undoing, if that is being found out, if that is opening up a a trauma that I had a long time ago. This is Alex. And in a minute I'm going to read you a few of these because I think this one might take the crown. So what I glean from this is if you've seen the text, you have to respond. Well whether whether or not I've broken up with friends has nothing to do with the way this one was treated, does it? Talk about that. And I'm interested in non-destructive ways to do that. And canvas is an idea of like a way to kind of think visually and present things visually.

Oh, I could see the value of me entering these 10 books that have been important in my journey with this stuff. Wouldn't you hate to be two weeks into your work with this? She's like a five-tool player at management. And Masters goes R getting away from something is not a plan. Because Alex does things on a phone. And then what I said was I said, now here's the thing. See, it feels gross to pitch it. And it's got, and I added a little piece of JavaScript that lets you jump down to the bottom line. No no no do it do it do it now I want to know which ones you would have read. I added a lot of things to reader. But when you are okay, I'm right that And like it's a way, it's a well, you think tables are hard in HTML.

I think a lot of people who consider themselves database database professionals would not consider this a database. I I did mean to hurt Virginia. The negative thinking that we have it keeps being reprocessed and turned over and over and we just keep grinding the same meat. Um that was a bit of a bit. I lost the bell. This is this is the sentence, and it does end with uh with a piece of punctuation, so bad on them. And sometimes that's not possible. The problem with things like love and hate and all those things, again, it's valence. And I think that's part of the appeal for the Why are you saving it for? He says every time he sees a little dog shaking, he turned and looked me straight in the face and said, Do you know why they shake?

Uh I okay. Well, they were kind enough to put in um headings for the sections. It also works through YAML metadata. What does that mean? Right? Well, you know what? Zelovit? I did not. This is from something called many one percents. I didn't cause I didn't want to drag this person, but Alex, there's so much in this I want to share with you. I don't just go LOL. I uh That seems like it should have a sad face after that. Yes. But like I it's it's it is a little bit frustrating at a point to be constantly Yes, um King. I well I very much uh I haven't done a lot of sort of Now what though? What why is why is what is this bit? I think that it's not a cancellation thing, but it is an a You're there to create that culture.

That's the problem. And when we do that, we rarely guess that people's motivations are good. Because the positivity is not about whether it's good. How about it? Yeah, those worksheets just kinda go right past you. You're trying to say like if you want to talk to people, just so you know, you're coming off this way. So like for example, like I just I love this in craft. I used to think I understood it and it's weird, but Mm-hmm. Wait n I don't think it all. But what if you do have to type this? They're just having sex for science. Slightly? But I agree with you. Apple does that too, of course. But do not ever send colon close parentheses or the emoji. Okay, where's number 10? And yet, like for for what it does, we kind of I addressed this a little bit last week where you figure out the thingness of the thing.

Uh I b uh both, but typically it'll I'll do it b uh usually now I I'm doing it like by tags. Title. You gotta try advanced tables, Alex. So now let me just tickle your buying bone here. And I'm again I'm not trying to excuse this, but I am saying that like Whatever it is you need to go to somewhere that's not that point. Oh god. So nineteen zero uh uh God forbid this is your first episode of the show. If you want to hear um them talking about the writing or the act I know everyone's sick of Baby Yoda and how cute he is. I don't remember Ruth. I saw one yesterday. Although I'm probably closer to that than I realized because everything in here Uh they can't be actually gents. You guys seem like you're having a good time This is especially true on dating apps.

That's a really good point. I'll talk about whatever you want. Yes. Like holding someone accountable can be. Where they go on the walk with Adrian Brody in that oh by the way, that I am gonna steal that look. There's two interesting things I can do here. Anyway, I was just talking about that one of my jobs on, well, depending on how you're doing Thursday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, is that I look over your stuff. But like I don't think anybody likes those shows as much as I do The uh that's the thing is I I realized the other day how many challenges Netiquet was a word. You have to it's so fucking bananas to tell other people what they have to do on their phone. She's fine, she's back, she's making money, everything's all good I got them all here in Launch Bar.

We're all familiar with that phrase writing prompt. But advanced tables also have you played with advanced tables. I think Kanban's a little bit of a I still don't really Well, every explanation I've I've gotten so far is like so it's a list of tasks. Give give some evidence. And and but, you know, if you never have to suffer As an adult, like you know, like if it's a potluck, you gotta bring dinner. I don't know if you're this far along, but and so the this this thing has to happen that seems utterly impossible. Like King Lear is too famous. No, I don't like it. Oh yeah, there were a lot of these where Max would make us expose our personal lives to him at his Capri. Oh, that's cool. The sound's good.

What's a normal episode to you? Uh like someone who You could zoom in infinitely and it would still be the same point at the same location. What? So you've seen have you seen you haven't seen it in a while. Yeah, but I Oh boy, this is I have a tag for it. I get that it might be hard to understand, but I've been reevaluating many areas of my life recently, including my ability to be a good friend to you. Yes. It knows stuff like that. Check this out.
