But that man was like groveling, like, I'm so sorry. Don't compare your backstage to other people's onstage. I think envious might even be too strong a word, but there's something between envy and admiring where you go, God man, I wish I could do it the way you could. And a lot of people think you can just start doing something without ever realizing what it is you're actually doing. And this is one reason I love people like, I don't know, like Tom Hanks and uh Tom Hardy and like a people other people named Tom. Like you're not here to just kiss this person's ass and you're you're you are trying and you're doing your job, but you're not you're not acting like you're interested in the other person in a way that just simply doesn't make sense.

And I'm like, you know what? I was working on my now page and I was thinking about like how I might use this and I I don't think I have the enthusiasm to keep this updated, but did you get that? Photographed by Nan Golden, taken with a Fujifilm Instax Mini 9, Flash, Candid, Natural, Spontaneous, Youthful, Lively, Carefree, AR3, 2. I don't get to pick how my poop looks when it comes out. I think it's in September. So the thing is, even though I may super need a certain kind of vehicle for a certain kind of purpose for a certain kind of life, that doesn't mean I can't still have other options. That's you. Okay. It's my logic. I think it's a good idea. I and I I think he knows it's a bit. you know, totally kept up with, but it's virtually impossible to do with somebody that you don't know.

Do you have you chosen th if the i if you if you can share, and or if you don't want to, have you chosen like themes or s similar for this year? I'll stop talking at this point. And she she wrote m this really nice thing in my yearbook and she said, Merlin, something like along the lines of Merlin, you're really funny, you have a quick whip, but like tr use it for good. Which is, you know, it's tough sometimes with a fifteen year old. Because that's the faces lizard is making. It's like, well I care about it a lot. I've got to do it. Buzz, buzz, buzz, like all the time of like scanning, scanning. Like these these things where you're like, Oh my god. It feels weird to say that you are a fan of a single human being, but I am a fan of Andrew Garfield.

Well like whatever's in the main body I would enjoy, but the right rail was I was all about the right rail. And it's this amazing, this amazing song and this amazing you can see what she's watching on TV and she's like just being a teenager dancing in a room. Uh uh. Uh maybe I am in the VR. That's cool. I'm no no no no Marlene, what is the new cheeseburger? Yeah, I was like, Is it gonna be that good? It was PR for Pi Pirate Reality. Did you know that first of all, number one, AR does not stand for assault rifle? Like, oh my god, I hope this is good, I hope this is good, I hope this is good. And also does it need to be currency? Just gonna mute them. How are you? Whether we want to record at 1030 or eleven.

With Alex Cox and Merlin Mann. Similar landlords because I don't have a great relationship with mine, not because of any sort of hostility on uh well, is it hostile if you just enter s I don't know. Go out and Google theory of uh I think it's called theory of mind. that. And this is this is me doing a podcast. I mean I he'd you know Pat does a lot of people. Do you have do do you have any things? Here's a here's a professionally taken photo of me standing on a chair holding a computer. Yes, everybody sing along, third verse, same as the first, the body keeps the score, had an unbelievable impact on the way I think about a lot of things. of that. And this the the next level of trauma, of course, is the kind of trauma that's visited upon us in particular by the person who's supposed to be protecting us.

Fuck you guys. I I keep thinking of George Orwell in nineteen eighty four and that idea of like even if the telescreens aren't on, you'll always act like the telescreens are on. Um oh no no I I uh lied about uh theme. You know that stack that I need a name for. I need to accept that shame is a vestigial emotion that my brain is using in a way it's trying to be helpful. But I really like oh you gotta be kidding me, sweetheart Happy Valentine's Day I'm gonna find the thing my drama teacher wrote in my yearbook and I'm gonna photograph a tippy toe lemon tree. Something I didn't have the ears to hear, but I've told you this before, but I w talk about shame. And I look back on that and I'm like, oh, Sherry Hacker, you're so sweet and you're so kind and so gentle.

And like she but the but she was really getting at something about me, which is that I've my whole life, like maybe like a lot of people, I don't know. Who like uh craves all the things that he can't have in life and weren't given to him. I kinda can't stop. And that's how I feel. Do you have a take on shame that you can No, I have no take on shame. uh type something or do something. Then he's he's doesn't have to do that t today because d I had an extra three fifteen minutes and just my uh You know what I mean? or emptying the dishes. could go a thousand times worse than you imagined. Hey, you know what? S him starting to enjoy um I think being w uh like you being more of a fan of things. Like I don't have a persuasive took to quote Tom Wolf.

The tribe of people I'm interested in mostly are not people looking to broaden their audience amongst strangers. It's more a way, or especially in terms of saying like of pandering. The only way anybody could possibly care about that is if they're also in their 50s and remember how fucking insane it was that the wedding present covered a pavement song. And here's like 400 things that like made me only slightly less fucked up for now. uh have made many things over the the years though and it almost feels like this you are doing out of a sense of generosity, but you don't want to say generous because it sounds ki kinda douchey. Still up. Thora Birch. It's a feel-good Disney reboot of Ghost World with the great Nicolas Cutt Age.

This guy entered in this like wildly specific prompt and got these crazy fucking photos out of it. Mm-hmm. Wait this goddamn second. Extremely good and lucid, but I'm gonna try that. control running. Live in a virtual world. But he loves that character. Alright, it was not mixed well on stage. You you wanna be I guess w with a bunch of other sweaty horny men and excited. Well also I I figured out I I I I wish I'm not complaining 'cause it's free and it's fucking bananas that it's out there and free. I enjoy the novelty of being able to what okay, uh what am I gonna do? I am I'm thirty-two years old in the year twenty twenty-three. Uh oh god, that's a very sad Lizzie Cap one. Okay. Squatch, my brother.

I love the way that she talks. I don't Can you work on that please? I have to do it. Yes, cool. I ivory that everyone is using is an absolute delight and it it it honestly feels very, very similar to uh like my list. that that people are are are being dishonest about whether they they think of Mastodon as a replacement for Twitter. that that I I I couldn't see and then it then it ended, I assume. Uh, I've never been to South by Southwest, but I do remember the weekend or or like the the week that Obviously that did not last with Twitter, but uh right now that's how Mastodon is, and I am just enjoying it. without having any sort of algorithmic timeline, I have like zero compulsion to check it except to be like, oh, there's gonna be a new um It smells good in there.

Read Reader, where people somebody was saying like this is the probably the best app of this kind to come along since Google Reader. But it's kind of low contrast for me. Read wise reader and not matter because I'm I No, matters matters fine, but like I'm not gonna subscribe for what it gives me. 'Cause it's like a pirate. uh mean does that mean you're reading uh your possibly mean except what it means because when someone says they w are like on Twitter they're th those can be like I uh well then. I boosted your rumor. Just because I'm reading a book doesn't mean I'm not writing something else. Do we want to talk about the last of us? Holy shit. once you become weird like me and you start thinking about transit being something that's all about options, you're no longer think about thinking about like, for example, my only options now are to be the the every white person and buy either an SUV or a crossover SUV.

Well no, I can also walk, but that's not a car. uh until years later because I was so worked up about like, hey everybody says you have to like this or everybody says you have to hate this. I I do not want to turn it off. And I think there's a role for that there. to reacquaint myself with just the way that uh discourse can go when it's in a more civil environment. uh my own attitudes about life and uh I do want to be kind and I uh I want to do stuff like for example I wanna stop J now you don't get it. What's funny? Or do I? So that's like across the street and then across another street. No, okay. What just happened? One reason I'm still here. Yeah, well I I just meant and this I didn't mean so much the rent raising part 'cause that only comes up periodically, but I mean it sounds like Dougie's not real good at reading a room.

I can't tell if this is another trap because of course the answer is. I don't know, as I've tried to get better about thinking about how other people think and not trying to guess their motivations as some kind of a sales technique, but as a way to just understand other people. Name of the wind? Expectation. I'll just say field. Uh what is making me, I think, feel crazier than y you know, my my brand of crazy is And I everybody does that. I don't know. Okay. things. And it's it's called the Body Keeps the Score and it's about trauma and the way your body actually is changed. But like like you know, it could be something horrible. Very important. Every drama class ended with corpse pose. Like the kid in uh Paul's case by I Wanna Say Will Cather or Udoro Welty.

lightning focus on a vulnerability that they have and make a funny joke about the irony of it, which I still to this day I And so of course, you know, you know how I am, how we are, like that just or like the kid would come in and like we'd be making something and little eyes would appear above the counter and go, I want some butter. Do and I want a certain kind of question you like for me uh the question I often ask is it could be something as broad as Stupid little little ti uh time timer that I uh I have a countdown now for things that I like and nothing. Mm, go uh what what do you mean by that? title. in a kind of O C D like way, I might start with this little tiny worry about something or a concern or even a fear.

thinking about the future. to be nice. how you fucked up in the past in a way that will undo you and the w things that will happen in the future that will also then consequently definitely undo you. Hmm. Shame. Mm-hmm. My general experience of non-Twitter things in the last few months, Mastodon's always kind of lurking in the background, but as of the last few weeks, obviously, uh omg. Like the the year of uh g gimme's and the year of uh n less less shame. But that that's what I I mean, is it that you like building the website? s sad about not uh updating it a as much and then people asking about uh why it's not being updated Like me. get it. Or being this like this morning, listening to this John Peel session of pavement doing here is like it's it it gives me shivers every time I listen to it.

I think that's a good thing. But like all this all my other little bullshit, like like sharing my weird weekend obsession with trying to make the cast of party down, be Star Wars characters in the style. Using that app you turned me on to draw things, which I thank you so much for that. You know, how have you played with it a lot? Say that. Wilford Brimley as Ignatius J. comic Ghost World. And it's just it's really funny. Stay. Also, you know, I have a crush on Lizzie Kaplan that's pretty pretty wholesome. I mean what it looks like is one of the Star Wars animated shows. Star Wars Oh well oh oh wait so by Star Wars you mean Clone Wars. Because the the thing that got passed around and I saw a wonderful piece about this.

What I will do is do this in the style of Spider-Verse and we'll see how that goes. I'd like to make my iPad mini and my phone race. any sort of digital he headset. Not not the footballs, but the I already love nerfs. Pages there is a lot of admittedly extremely beautiful, like way too detailed fucking anime women. Please. That master well just thinking about the case. Once it's roughly the steps you want, change the seed, right? But it does take a lot longer even on Mr. And then you do it again. about. about stuff they have no fucking idea about. could pretend to have a good intention. Not how good is this Martin Starr, but what do I think? didn't do the challenge, you can talk about why you didn't or how you didn't do the challenge.

I see those those are things that definitely make sense though. Yeah, challenge challenge one was uh Explore Mastodon. No, it's a g good explore Mastodon is a good verb because that's probably the most difficult part is to explore different parts of Mastodon. Oh and Twitter broke big and it bees, right, right, right. Also did not post to Twitter for a very long time and that was my favorite uh t Twitter period. For my two thousand and six to two thousand and I'm there. If someone talks about how uh hey, I'm going to be posting my new Playdate game in a couple hours, I'm like, oh man, I'm excited. Fucking losers for stopping status board, which might be the greatest stop of all time. I've I don't know, I've just been enjoying Mastodon as if it was mm Google Reader kind kind of.

I was just falling asleep reading the importance of being earnest last night because guess what? Mm-hmm. And like so if I go and I hit O, yeah, that's right, there's not even a meta key, it opens Marcus Aurelius, and guess what? We're excited about it. Tech. podcast and like he's such a good he's such a he su he plays along so well because I'll say something to him like hey we should do this as a challenge he goes this is not the show where we do challenge I j I have said You keep saying over and over, you keep asking the same question. It's fine. But because I don't feel any urgency about it, I want to take my under my time. snack instead of like a a a forty-seven course dinner. your life. Yeah.

on Twitter that are actually awesome. Because in some ways, while we want to have an area where we can all be together and do the same thing, I think there's something beneficial about slowly working our way into an idea of not do boosts myself. meeting people permanently. a good citizen and I want to have fun and I want to ride on that elephant. Good. Is is that an impression of you or me or of just the internet in general? Ooh. That of all the places Evernote helped me locate, this place, if I were good at baseball raised uh the rent this year after six years and I I I did not act as if it was a big deal. Don't even know that they should read a room. I don't. You look at somebody and you're like, oh man.

Of tr trying to understand the world through what other people say about themselves has made us a little broken. my new mantra, uh all all bits become bits uh of yourself. I uh every every bit is a bit a in itself, which is What if you don't know it's a bit, Alex? Oh well anyway I saw her and she said hi. And like when you hang out with him, he's he's kind of grumpy, but so fucking smart. And I know it's a bit and I still see that bit and I'm like, oh man, I I like that slide where like we're having our fourth drink uh at a club and and you're telling me about what some people will call imposter syndrome. to give out at conferences, that's a good time to just check in with yourself, I think. As a giving that as an example then, I think it's complex it's complex to do that with your friends and friends you haven't seen in a while or haven't like s Seeing people transform themselves from their online bits I think between me and you, d did we didn't we kind of agree 2023 needs to be the year we really get people to start doing funny voices again?

Cat's Cradle, or possibly Breakfast of Champions, where a character says, um, you know, Um I I have I have I have three things that I didn't realize until just now, like are definitely things for me for the year. That's not true. Because that's very funny if you've seen 16 candles. to the group. This is why we talk about nonsense like the polyvagal theory and things like that. almost biological response that whatever happened in your life, it's fucking your fault and your fault alone and you should feel bad about it forever. I really want to see less shame in the world. Honey. And it's really hard to stop because for us it's the sweetest memory in the world. I'm not saying I'm gonna stop, but I I do I do want to be aware of it.

that to repeatedly do things that make me the person that they dread being with or being around or dread the idea of them even thinking about them. If you can share. Focusing and not trying to like hyperfixate, but figure out my motivation behind anything I say or do What is there any possible positive outcome of this? tub or vat of hand sanitizer and I kept saying do you stop fixating on the word vat that kind of thing. I I for myself anyway, anxiety becomes this way of filtering the world into a series of species ending events that probably already have started and you just don't know it yet. which is that from what I would call owing to something I would call anxiety, I don't know if it's caused by anxiety or anxiety is the result exactly, but I do feel the need to constantly scan the horizon for danger.

I don't know. on something. I have come to realize that the tyranny my personal tyranny of critical and public response to media is I didn't realize that like how much I like look at star ratings and shit like that. Everybody got Phil Hartman in the first round. commonplace book in some ways. the the reason I ask about the you know what what is this for is because I know that I would immediately get I uh uh what is what is it? And uh what does the purpose of a public commonplace book have in the Uh but I'm gonna be mean for a minute. paradoxical and very well maybe so paradoxical that it crosses over into uh uh hypocritical but I write in postings because I like writing and postings I mean that fucking ARA is a big part of a happy adulthood is like you you find your tribe in people who are less well things.

Like a practically unreleased pavement song. the the items with the hottest bullet on billboard in order to make, you know, somebody in Montana think I'm acceptable. Everything about that is true. They're really, really, really good. Peep for something about her, like she's she's easier to do than others. I'm a mental baby. The fingers are insane and everybody has about twice as many teeth as they should have. Hi guys. Ha ha ha! I just I I I I can't stop Which one? more than the blah blah text. but like you know I just I like her face. I know. No, no, no, the the lady who replaced Mary Barry, like the discount Mary Barry. It d I mean you you do it in a way that you have half as many viewers based how you do the show.

Has anybody ever met this person? Because we couldn't decide what would be more interesting to talk about strictly true, but it's close enough. Uh I I mean in terms of like literally finding something new. the thing that's right in front of your face because of where you're signed up or like uh the where where you're signed up like w not uh not not even experience on on Twitter. South by Southwest was uh fun, I suppose. A handheld game console by the five years. I make I make one of the I I'm one of the most successful indie game studio producers in the world. adding books to it and highlighting them and you know adding epubs into that. Anything that you're reading, if it can figure out the where where to find that person online, you can click and subscribe and it adds that to your feeds.

Mm-hmm. went and when the beta uh opened up or um m or r rather where you s so kindly got me a added to it Like a lot of them. Finally, men have their own senior. And it's pronounced AR! But if you just merely strip restrict me to which kind of SUV am I gonna buy, the conversation's not gonna be fun. It's fine. Oh, by the way, if you if you're doing virtual reality about money, that's called current CR or CR. Uh can can No literally literally set a timer that I want to do. I'm like if if the thing is I would say if overengineering had currency, I'd be the face on it. We may all be on the same block, but I want to be in this house and in particular I want to be in this particular room. Can't hear you.

But I have luckily I have all this salt water. Or another ball game where you throw a ball? as I got ol uh okay, so let's put it this way, my whole life I've grown up thinking I'm the center of the universe, 'cause I am. His uh I think it's a m metaphor, is that a metaphor? Well, that's w what I mean. uh uh issuing that because I'm incredibly guilty of it, but more of the this is an emotion I'm performing online. Oh, go go on, go on. all of them. A second one, and I'm gonna get real for a second here. Does that make sense? Guides my own life in a way I was never comfortable saying before. Um d do you know what I mean though? you do that causes people shame? that's important and sort of like remember like last week I had or whatever it was we were talking about something and I said and you and I was talking about my um I was thinking about that when you sa I was thinking about how you said that this morning.

And the thing is it sounds like haha, that's funny, but honestly, like what is the end of me? Yeah, I think that's how do you even recognize something that is a Merlin ending event. Never let me go, which was based on a novel. point i i is it more like of an FAQ t type of deal. I don't know. If you're in that particular subtribe, you're gonna get shivers too. Model. Oh no no no I am talking about a uh any sort of uh VR or AR glasses or even the ray bands from Facebook that upset me quite a bit because you can not tell the difference between This is not turning out well. I gotta figure out how to do that. Okay, I did not I did not publish that one 'cause it's not good. You know what? If it doesn't it feel a little bit like uh Twitter the week after South by Southwest in like uh two thousand and um uh whenever the fucks But then the week after that, everyone was back in their little hobbit holes just talking about cool things that they had found and sharing whatever they were up to.

Mm-hmm. Oh my god. Oh God. Um mas to what'd you say? Um, I've turned off boosts. My feel my thinking was I want to go into this, you know, with my eyes open and I want to be smart about it and I want to not be a dick. But I think that's a good way to look at it. Yeah, I it's the year of funny voices though, so I wanted to be in the space. Hello. And that's why that phrase read the room, which is in my document about Mastodon, it's the first thing in my new rules for Mastodon is read the room. Do you think that everyone still is like that or has that ex into just this is how they are now and it's often not a great look. on stage self and I know this, but then I'm unable to turn it off in private.

We we are what we pretend to be, so we should be careful what we pretend to be. So number two, less shame for me and encouraging in a very gentle way, encouraging less shame in everybody that I love. Or oh my God, I forgot to do the Instacart or I got busy and da da da da da da da da da. And I'm not at the level of John Roderick, but I'm pretty good at scoping somebody out and being able to like if I choose to like And and we go, you well, you can have a little. Absolutely. Mm-hmm. And my Oscar Wilde and twist on this is it's nice to pretend to be important, but it's even more important to pretend to be nice. And like that, but and the reason that you do that is not because you like that person.

What is the point uh I I mean this in a way that's like like what what is the I had a right rail where I could update what I'm listening to, what I'm reading, um, you know, just all that kind of basic like, you know, media stuff, which I thought was fun to do. Alright? Not a a uh sm I I wanna say that I would pay a significant amount of money to see you uh wearing a The Hatsune. Absolutely. And it's really it's been very upsetting. No, okay, I I know I I know what Shar, you're you're a c you're a cynicism you're a cynicism whisperer. It's not that entertaining to me. Um that's been useful to me. It's like a boardroom of ADHD uh the SEO tribe. Um but ultimately it's gonna not probably not gonna nothing in the world could be a place where I want to be read unless it's already a place where I want to read.

So I ask myself questions like, do I am I here mainly to read or to be read? Based on the uh quiet neighborhood area, cor correct? It's comical that I got this office. Oh, absolutely. No, like I'm not sure. to the person. Right? Because your part of the function of your mind is to keep you acceptable to the tribe and to not be disruptive. Um that is exaggerating something about me that I know I don't like and I have to imagine everybody else doesn't like. pill like embroidered on a pillow type thing, but it's it's the duh very why see I'm doing it. And like kind of feel you know, open open the mail slowly and like peek inside because I bet there's something in here that will be the end of me.

Today. Because n this is you know, oh shit dog. I don't know. I I see I see what you're saying, and it absolutely makes sense, especially from a very cynical point of view. Oh my god. Just the generative stuff uh makes you happy. I've been thinking about what it must be like to um kiss Ron Swanson um or you know uh Nick Offerman just in general. Oh man, these are little blue. was uh to use Mastod the ha sort of have to use Mastodon and also to watch The Last of Us That is I think the most underrated feature right now is the uh And the highlights sync across everything. Inadequate. And never in a million years. I mean that was really insightful, Marlin. Like I remember did I did I hear that I made the crack about how like be careful about what you start making fun of because then you start doing it all the time, like all that kind of thing.

And I don't know if you've ever tried notice if anyone in your world ever does this, someone whom you love and who loves you, you enter the room and go, oh my god, I'm sorry I didn't finish the dishes. It uh yeah seriously. that our kid used to say when they're when he was really little. Which I think is sweet and has that kind of like, you know, it's got like a that's some kind of a Greek rhetorical trope to do that, like oh, I see what you did there kind of thing. He was, oh gosh. Yes. In a Spider-Verse movie. Listened to that show that you really, really like with uh Jason and um Alexandra, su something or other. I do wish that there were mmm. It's lovely. The gimme's. I I kind of didn't use this as the opportunity I could have to start completely over.

I think it looks really promising from a tech basis and from a social basis. Maybe I've been watching too much stuff about murderers lately. You just said two completely different sentences that have different meanings as words in in the English language. Like when when Billy would wake up and come what Billy would be crying or something in bed and go, and we go, what's wrong? I can understand why that would be hard to stop. like inflating my own sense of warmth and nostalgia with a person who I I told him the other night I I said I I got a hug out of nowhere. And um I I don't know. But like what if I just wanted to make something that's f for me and about me, and I I in fact only wanted the people who got it to me.

Um oh yeah. The machine makes what the machine wants to make. The guy's prompt is, I think I put it here in uh okay, ready? They're too far apart. I don't want to talk about whether I enjoyed it. I mean I I guess obviously they don't have that expectation. I wrote it down. Like trauma's real and it's fucked up and nobody's and we're not supposed to talk about it. And like look forward to stuff rather than thinking about what could go wrong. It s really sounds that you're doing it. Oh my god. It started out as Philip Seymour Hoffman, but everything I made kept looking like Wilfred Brimley and I said, fine, fuck it. Amazing. No, no, do you want to let me find the original and then we should probably do our challenge, aren't we?

It actually seems to like specificity, right? Exactly. It's a bad thing right now, but that is yeah, yeah, that's that's hard to to do. What's up in tech? This hat is broadcasting live. It does not seem at least the way it is going right now. But I w just to be in addition to being mean and causing shame, I would like to tell you well, I could tell you the after show, but I do have my guidelines for going into this with my eyes open. Oh no, I can't. And one of my takeaways from that, again, this is a book that I talk about letting the checks notes every day by uh Sunkai from Dutch. I have an entire unsurprisingly, I have an entire text file of hilarious things that my kid used to say. Um that I it's not fun to be that way and it's something I'm trying to work on, but it's, you know, that what is what Annie Lamott called it the the jukebox that plays the greatest hits of my failures.

I like a lot of shit other people don't like, and I need to stop doing that thing where like I don't watch a movie because I heard somebody doesn't like it. Because it's fucking insane. So what it says here is obviously it's still early days for my party down cinematic universe PDCU. That's my birthday! Oh yeah, because everybody's really good about that. But it's quite penetrative. So Alex, what do you think of your new podcast co-host, the Ding Dong Machine? Hello. Oh boy. I was No, no. What's it called? It's fantasy, it's epic fantasy, but go on go on, go on. Yeah, I think I do. I'll put a little bit on right now. My Oscar Wilding. I I'm not trying to like go like do some big public pose and say, oh, be kind, and all that kind of like the bullshit that people say about like pretending.

Oh my god, Wilford Brimley as Ignatius J. That must have been difficult to Mike. Are you are you uh using mm Mastodon? But actually as exploring Mastodon as it like exists in the Fediverse, it's difficult to like jump from instance to instance and know what the fuck is going on. What about Salt Bay? Don't make me get that McAllah purse. Kill me! I like the rabbits you sent. Everybody's got more trauma than they realize. Number two, this is the year, and you know me and my stack, right? But now that sounds like a pavement. And they're coming for me. And I think that's what a lot of people do. That's worse than omgot lol. If I wanted people to like what I do, I would do it differently. I haven't even sent out my cards yet.

Now you don't No, I'm sorry, I know. Now a nerf football, the thing is though, I don't know if it would travel as far. I just made fun of a guy for his YouTube thumbnail the other day and I feel kinda bad about it, but it is bullshit and it's hurting my industry. Mary Barry for the baking show? There are a lot of I bet there are like baby Tim Cooks out there who admire Min Ching Kuo and for some reason get really horny for uh like uh operations on the the like This is this is the year of funny f oh my god, they're cutting the pavement. Yes. And then that starts very much starts with don't make other people feel shame about something you know they feel bad about. I mean Well that's that th then that's the an answer then.

This is a podcast. Don't use this for news. Hello. Hello. Did you have a neurological event? I like my kid more than I ever like my kid and it's really fucked up. Also, do you want me to mute or should I just let it rip? Um, but so yeah, so the so I got way off track on that. Um a clever thing I first heard someone say probably in the 90s was it's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice. I thought a now one use for a now page that would be fun is Hall of Fame, things I'm currently obsessed with, things I'm just dabbling with, things that I'm gonna mess with soon, and things that I'm not as into as I used to be. I was running it on two computers and an iPad Friday. But it wasn't the problem was getting into the Kylo Rennness of it.

I don't mind the wild speculation. I don't really know what kind of rumors about things that haven't happened yet should be boosted. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Good afternoon. Um it oh my god it's so loud. But number two, I still have a third. Anxiety and part of the the problem with anxiety is that it's almost impossible to live in the moment because anxiety is constantly telling you Gimme Gimme Oh, just gimme tick tick boom, everyone just just So so then then why why? It's basically like gambling. Apparently all the shows do challenges though now. It's roughly, let me put to you this way, in the grand scheme of things, the house in which I sleep, in which my children play with their toys, is almost as close to where I am now as that saw.

It doesn't make any fucking sense. Gosh, you know what the fourth one should be? It was kind of like an indie comic in the eighties and nineties. It really works for my brain. That's I mean, think about that. Unless they're in VR or TR. Um we got a bad case of the gimme's. Could it does is it have to be fiat currency, you know? And but online his whole deal is like, meh, you misunderstood that. And perhaps another way to put it is whatever there are things out there that I know I can't handle today. I'm really glad I'm watching this. Have you played with the different models? Oh, I this looks so familiar, but I don't think it's like in v Bishemie is this guy named Seymour who collects really obscure jazz 78s.

Yeah. It's fine. If somebody bugs me or I'm just like, I'm so tired of seeing you complain about something, I'll mute that person for a month. And he's really cool. Yeah, I think that's called a conversation where you say something and then I say something. Yes. And like and I see your vulnerability and I I wish I could tell you and I don't think you're faking that vulnerability. And people who are traumatized, you know, there's the trauma that happens and maybe that trauma is something like a an accidental car accident, which I guess is an accident. I love that it sings to the stuff. All right. You get bits, right? Are you afraid of letting Maddie down? I don't know what that is. And so I spent a ton of from Friday through, I don't know, when probably when I'm done here, making characters from Party Down appear to be characters in the Star Wars universe as they would look.

And then shit, what's the other one? She really, really understands. Yes. I'm like, are you really doing this because you you love it or you're you're afraid of it and you are just Oh shit, Nicolas Cage in Ghost World. It's maybe for me most memorably, because I'm basic, it opens up with Thora Birch, who's a teenager, in her room watching this Bollywood movie and dancing along. Has dolls of that character in his room. But I'm trying I like others just so fucking much. Talk like a pirate day was a hope it was I like bacon? One minute and six seconds. Eleven years. He's very into his personal brand and and that's kind of his bit. I'm gonna stop this. Could I I you know jazz it up a little bit. It is a little bit difficult to follow bugs.

What about VR and AR? Hmm. What? Okay, did you want to talk business before the show or is this the show? Oof. It's a sort of like a way of just saying like, hey, and again, this is all stuff that used to be like my favorite part of a website in the early to mid-2000s was always the right rail. I mean like should I only learn guitar because I want people to admire that I play guitar? A candid photo of some happy twenty something year olds in twenty eighteen dressed up for a night out, enjoying themselves mid-dance at a house party in some apartment in the city. No, but I mean it's which is which is great. Oh. Kill me! God, it's so loud. It's in the list of things that need a name. See you see.

So the things that I wrote down, one of the biggest things is read the room. I am like this a lot, but I'm not exactly like this a lot. It's just that there's a certain kind of tidy and this is adjacent to the chicken problem because your brand could also be that you just browbeat strangers in a way that can get you accolades. Amazing. Um that's a good one. Who's coming up with this stuff? Well, I I'm always monopolizing the show. I d to talk d about it with my spouse a lot. Remember, wanted to put Lizzie Kaplan and everything? I would love more like here's how to like like I already feel like I'm having to pick this up myself. Let me play! Uh no, no, no, no. My Bitflex last night was telling my kid that I've been in the founder's room at the secret room behind the bookcase.

Have you seen Salt Bay? So you are you are on you're at Mastodon. I should sleep less. And Ivory makes it a million times better. Um and then I guess I feel like it's an opportunity to reacquaint myself with a lot of things, people, one of them. Number one, it's gonna be funny voices. It was just a gimme. I hope the Wisdom Project i in the fullness of time becomes something that people regard as useful and I could be that could be seen as generous. Is it gonna be that good? I would love to turn off boosts for everything. This week's challenge, Explore Mastodon. You're telling me about how like you are arguably one of the most accomplished people in your fairly obscure tech. Hello. I want to cause less shame in the world, um, mostly.

And like so I see that, I see that myself, I see that in my family, and I'm like I'm like, you know, 'cause Madel and I both got into this habit where like this is personal, but like we both do this weird thing where as soon as we enter the house we start apologizing for something. She was really on a different level for Pesco County in nineteen eighty four. Just stuffing. I mean you're putting on technically you're putting on sliders, but his name's Garrett. Oh no, it's her guy from Game of Thrones. She makes the but like every time I listen to that show, I always enjoy it. You go to one of the shovel blogs and they're going to be very clear about how well they've vetted Minchi Kuo's thing they read somewhere else.

Doesn't it doesn't it smell good in there? I want to talk first about what I'm doing. I've been uh thinking about it since it my AOL instant m uh message like away profile, but it was It could be you saw somebody get shot or something. Wait, why why not? And then what that what that guy from Penny Arcade calls chain worrying, the idea that like now this sets off a progression of other worries. Oh my god, we have to talk about this. For some reason now in my head I've really conflated, because of just the accident of time, I've kind of conflated uh Mastodon and my experience of non-Twitter. And I know in my heart that if I ran across this tweet or that page, I would go, oh yeah, fucking ain't right.

Yes, that's the one. Oh good, because I get I get partial credit? Buttons, my very fast computer. It runs pretty fast on a MacBook Air. They're the the teeth look a little bit wrong. I can send you as many of these as you want. You know, I I do love you, but God you're insufferable. I almost don't want to talk about it yet because I don't think people feel like either. Uh you're quiet, so I'm gonna crank you up. And it's it's hard because sometimes or like for example with our kid, like the my my wife and I have these like probably fifteen different things. Bits are bits. Uh it's not icon factory uh any font, is that what it's called? Down to the concept art of someone just read many concept art books If Brimley's in the machine, I'm just gonna go for it.

Look at Jane Lynch. There you go. And but she can be like, oh yeah, well there's this and that and that and this and that and and fast and this and all these acronyms and it's like, ugh. It is something that people are talking about a lot on um Mass Now. Oh, really? And I know it sounds like I'm just saying a different, slightly meaner version of its replacement for I don't know what this is for in my life yet. And then you're like, that was good, right? For concrete? After show, give your fucking money. Oh, the the tweaks are the models are nuts. Uh I don't want to get into the discourse. Ooh. Big ones are read the room. Well, but if I don't use it for news, what's it for? Kill me! I can hear my neighbors vacuuming.

Well no, you were right about the theoretical second half. A popular like big big world world building sci-fi. But then he met that great line. I think a lot of people roll around acting like they're nice when they're not actually very nice. I'm gonna go to draw things. Horses are funny. I got a hug and I said, I think I love you now more than I've ever loved you in my life. Oh god, I would I uh oh there would be there would be m I I'm gonna stop pursuing oh, this is really bad, Alex. It's I may be horny but I'm horny in a wholesome way. I want you to I want to see what happens when you turn it off. I'm not even talking about self uh like uh the self-congratulatory type of s stuff because I uh am I guess the um what your b your brain podcast you like, they call it like a theme, right?

Do you th think uh about that? But number two, we got we gotta have less of the shame. People my kid, my good my kid gives triangle sentence. And he wasn't. It uh But but did you know that you can have draw things did you knew that you can have draw things automatically um save them into a folder each time? I can't tell you. Look at that. She's so fucking smart and every single time I think the same goddamn thing and with all, you know, credit to her, is it makes me realize how many people who act like ex experts have no actual idea what the fuck they're talking about. We get along really well. Oh like when you're like typing the mean thing on the internet, come on. Honestly, even like that the the crappy Amazon.

Yeah. It's my birthday! Yeah. Mm-hmm. Thank you for talking about that. Oh oh by the way, they're cutting pavement. Are you crazy? Also fuck off. It's very funny, right? I was watching my uh my my uh my my beaker that my IC is in. I I don't I lack a persuasive theory to explain like why it is. Have you played virtual? You uh you're on the show floor of Mastodon at the end enjoy and in Alex, if this were if this were a time when when all my friends were still being funny on Twitter and trying, I would never in a fucking million years go to this thing And I think it will have a role in my life, but I suspect it will have I what it's gonna be useful for me to enjoy it for what same way as a Star Wars movie.

Just makes the cutting louder. Build Casey for the cans. Did you see the one of the guy who made the fake the photos of girls at a party in like the two thousands? It's very weird that the phone wits. See but but there are people who feel deeply ashamed that they enjoy that. Okay. Da ta-da-da-da! My favorite bit right now is starting Wectifs and and being mad at John because I can't talk about him being mean to me in the pre-flight. Kill me! There's w one person in particular, for example, on Twitter, who is one of the smartest and most accomplished people. You would not believe how hard it was to get something that looked like Ken Marino. It's not fun to use on iOS. That's exactly what I've always wanted.

Yeah, it's almost like the people who hate when you say via for via and oh man. I know, I know, but like I can walk or I can take my scooter or I can ride my bike or I could get a lift or I could take a bus or I could take a streetcar or I could not do it. Oh, you should talk at companies and get money for it. Hi, how are you? You don't think of it as trauma. I got a fourth one, I think, which is, you know, I just do this because I like it. So I've got it in reader. All I know is it's time. You know what I'm saying? They just started like two minutes ago before we started. The the human ability to think about what other people are thinking. Okay. Here's one way to put it. Riley in A Confederacy of Dunces by Hayo uh Hayo Miyazaki Concept Art circa nineteen ninety-three But do you see how they diversified the cast?

Oh my God. I have a lot of Lizzie Kaplan's in here. Don't say that because you don't know what it means. Have you have you seen the AR-15? Oh sorry. Do you know what I mean? But it was that metaphor that really sort of clarified it. And I I this might be my year of gimme's. Uh and the only reason I say that is because it's one of those weird movies for weirdos based on This is super fun. Oh, I'm telling I'm we were all pretty into wedding present in the in the like early nineties and like Jesus fucking Christ, like what a moment that was. I uh it's just you you have to do this. But like Oh no. That's not true. But all the way down to like just as simple as like have I effectively communicated the part of this?

And it was on iOS too, so I I think it was d I've done it on the phone, but mostly I'm doing it obviously I'm doing it on Mr. I uh I I don't like it when people a act as if it's an educated guess or that that like, mmm, that's Yeah. And it was absolutely it it went above and beyond my expectation even before well it But like uh you know what? Okay, wait, wait. And then I think the idea is that I want to curate delight. I'm sad about everything I retwitter and I'm sad. I'm sorry I'm interrupting you. Mm-hmm. This is a good thing. It's gonna be a beach parade. You always want to hit a new seed. Wait, no, uh Mary Barry, the ladies who replaced Mary Barry. You could all you could peanut butter, you can almond butter, you could salt unsalted butter.

I don't know. Like last night I bookmarked the the Wikipedia page on Marcus Aurelius. Interesting. The show's over! Without having to be just a basket case. Um, Alex, 2022, for me, one of the biggest things through 2022, or whenever we whenever I first got turned on to Not to to I did not want to lie to you, but I don't know I wan I want to talk about it, please. Well think about how uh with me, for my the way my anxiety evidence is is just buzz buzz buzz buzz buzz No, this is not it. Oh, you did make the final pan oh okay, right below this tweet, uh you have Metal Husband And I've spent a fair amount of time and I I think I'm finally gonna let go and let God and start getting a ton more specific.

Oh indeed. There she is. It's amazing to me how many people, including myself, just wildly speculate. Send me some of yours. Those are the things that you're doing. 'Cause they have to put in pipes. But okay, so what's it called? And if you don't, that is so okay. I'm I would bet uh there are uh It's the synthesis of Westbrook. But I can't even tell. This is known. I think uh you and I have uh not so It does indeed. It's like, you know, what you see, what you think, what you decide, what you do, that kind of cascade in life. Yeah, but like imagine a little little a tiny little kid going, I can't sweep. I have no angle on shame. And I'm really into the like like I just made some crack on Twitter about fucking pavement and wedding present.

And I just love it when Lenarman goes, well, kind of quietly goes, Well, there she is. What about Lee Brittany alone? I know, I know, but but uh w when you say you are there, what does that uh Okay. No, the go go ahead. But it is a very, very cool service slash pro product. Now what do you think of that Martin Star? We have a great relationship, I think, and he has never raised my rent in 11 years. Exactly. It sounds so bad. I like making things, Alex. Really stick with me. Okay, good, good. Absolutely. I mean, I haven't been in there. Yeah. Okay. Could could we use uh shiny beads? That's different. And you know, and you know how little kids talk and we sometimes we still say it the way he did when he was three.

And you go, well, I want a little and a lot. And that's to me, that's anxiety. And it's it's Steve Buscemi is in it and it's got Scarlett Johansson and um It's like Myth Mary Barry was the Sass Like uh But like I couldn't enjoy like fucking how good uh Rogue One was But the problem is you're seeing their onstage. Well n how about you just think about about how much you uh you love him and how happy he will be that normally, you know, he does the dishes and I'm not criticizing it. Oh look at I I I'm cable. What uh you're you're unmasked on, even though you're not. I mean, you saw it, I put it in the Slack. Three, all right, all right, here we go. com. Because you know what? That sounds like a pavement lyric.

So yeah, I think I do I do know that. I was thinking about this the other night related to this, uh, about how anxiety Have you seen him in interviews? Yeah, the the the Star Wars ones, like I said, I think I found my calling finally with this. Oh god. Second one. As the way I explained to my shrink a long time ago, I feel like there's a thing that the way that I am that I do not like. You don't fucking know that person. Because if you're uh playing guitar and posting it online, it feels different than just playing guitar. Remember on Letterman? I can't stop looking at Martin Starr because it doesn't I I I wouldn't really look at that and be like that's Martin Starr. It's like digital pottery.

What is that? I I just remember What are you talking about? As I said a couple weeks ago, no bummers. Uh via Merlin Mann, that's not true. Yep. Why not? We're both excited about the TV show on HBO called The Last of Us. Yes. And I was like, Oh man, this this everyone's talking about like what restaurants they're at. I can just drop an EPUB in there from standard ebooks and it loves it. You made up um your own Mastodon like style guide, right? Uh, I'm not there for the boosts, I'm there for you. It is worse than it's ever been. And I always felt entit completely entitled to use my sarcasm. And if it's somebody that I love, it's not sensible for me to do things For me right now, that's the Ferrante thing of the Lost Daughter with Olivia Coleman.

Jane Lynch. Suddenly I'm Irish and I don't know why. I don't know if this will ever have a place in y So this is can c can I can I throw down a big one? First, I need to accept that shame is out there for me. So like it would be really unkind of me, even if it makes me and her happy to bond over that. Oh, that's too many steps. Okay, thank you, Merlin. Send me some of yours. But also that thing of like the like what do you what do I love in matter, Alex? Are there other Rs? The show's over! The point being that if I were an athlete, I could hit my office with a ball. Right. Um the all I'm trying to say is like Pat Pat did that thing that thing and I he was talking about I think in the context of like you're a writer and like we all get And I think that I know that makes me feel crazy.

That's a that's a kind of trauma. I mean okay, it's a good and very provocative question. Well the idea is this is the thing. And so basically this was used um because this got pretty hot. Oh, thank you. Yes. Trying to get Jane Lynch as Chewbacca was challenging. Like if someone uh like if somebody links to to something, like obviously it's like, oh, go check out this instance or oh here's this new thing. I didn't know where it started, where it ended. It's one of the few apps that I've used where the Is it a bottle episode? I think I see this having a role in my life, but it's not gonna be anywhere near the role in my life that Twitter had. I don't know. Let's come back to it. I'm not interrupting me.

Is that um I I've become more sensitive And why don't you think of it tra uh as trauma? And we're supposed to like look at people with shame if there's something that they're still dealing with in the world, and that's the thing. My wonderful drama teacher who was so good to me in twelfth grade. I am using and enjoying Mastodon. I think the needle is stuck, you wouldn't know with this reference. Am I here to entertain or to be entertained? Was that a metaphor? Yes. Yeah. It sounds so uh stupid and uh Number two, we gotta deal with the shame. I want to take this thing for what it is and stop thinking about like preemptively what I would say about this to people who tell me it's not good. Like who's it for?

Yeah, do me a fairly please pause pause a beat, pause a beat, and please read exactly what is written there. Yeah, yeah. I'm not going to call someone. Look at that gal right there. What kind of Lizzie Kaplan? Jazz it up jazz it up a little bit. It's fucking wild. How uh did uh so you you did you enjoy using Mastodon? Alright, what are you doing? I can turn it off in a second. When people do how how is that d how is that different? But like this is the number two, this is the year And the fact that it sucks it all out of instapaper and then like there it is and like What are you a white woman? Um that's mm that's whatever. Um I didn't summarize that well, but it's real, right? Uh you're the gimme.

Tell me the name of it. If I wanted a broad range of people to be into me, I think I have a track record that shows I know how to make people like You're very fond of me in my virtual world. Yes it is. I made uh um from Astodon, I made a second account and uh his name is Horse Merlin. Uh just not really your your your jam. Oh my god, oh my god. Oh, I can uh No no no no you do you it's everybody you know you gotta put your own mask on first like they said I am well. Oh, that's ironic, because I was just listening to pavement, and listening to pavement is what made me listen to the wedding present. It's very loud. You know what I mean? I think that's your new one sorry my new bit. Yep. He seems clear.

Anyway, but why do I do that? I couldn't quite and I think sometimes I get a little skittish about how long the prompt is because in my brain that seems like that would make it more difficult rather than better. The corn in your stool was slightly caddy wompous. Like, haha, I'm an asshole. I am just steeped in it twenty-four-seven. Pretty wholesome. I think we've already kind of been doing doing at least half of our challenge. Um button. And I was like, absolutely. And like it's I mean for example like I don't even And I've done that. Hello. Fuck you guys. Here's my Oscar Wilding and Oscar Wilding twist. I like making things. Oh my god. And then, you know, don't do like 90 steps until you're ready.

I I love her as somebody I don't know if she has ADHD, but she should. Also what it does mean listen, listen. If you need to be in a dentist's office, it'd be kind of nice to be there with people you like that are smart. And I think the idea of federation is something really laudable that we could learn a lot from. Just go and lurk and be quiet and get the feel for it, see what people are doing, honestly to reacquaint myself with people that I've mostly muted. Do you ever think I think about that like a lot, a lot. But like, you know, that's somebody I know. I my whole oh and that's why I didn't even want to talk about my stupid little theme because I'm like this is stupid and everyone's talking about it and who the fuck cares?

Then that's the same thing. Did you ever see the movie Ghost World? Oh Alex. Two thousand eleven Twitter. Let it become what it's gonna be. It's not interesting interesting really, but like no, I mean like it's it's comical. People who all find a way to always barge in and make everything about them. Right there's a reason Dan Benjamin and I keep saying, automobile? I would love it if people eventually saw that and went, well, that's kind of cool. Because you're you like it in such a wholesome way that I wish more folks like it in an unwholesome way? Oh discount Mary. I uh oh mm actually that's I would love to hear a good go on I know that people tend to fuss around with the font and uh, you know, theme and whatnot.

Sure. And uh y you know, uh m uh honey, people who g gave gave us uh mu money for this this show, but I just keep I don't know. I'm just gonna you're just gonna have to be okay with with what I watched. Wait, where did where the where did this is this on Twitter? I'm not seeing any of the Oh, oh dear. I I think everybody's being extremely honest that we all agree it's definitely not a replacement for Twitter. You're on on a yeah, so I signed up a million years ago and um I'll get to the the the really I don't we don't spend a lot of time on this. You I miss I miss you. I'm like, Well you're a landlord, you don't have to do this. You see these people in an interview, you can tell like, you know what?

So when I first did Kung Fu Grip as a I think the very first way I did it was movable type. You know what? Have you seen that? I'm gonna have a new I'm gonna have a new um gosh I need a new sound for when I'm doing a metaphor. What okay, I'll come back to it. I mean, 'cause you have to be funny for uh m money, but money. Typing a mean thing on the a uh internet Two stars. That's funny you should say that. Why would I do it? There she is. But I will curse you with it, I think. I don't know what this is, but it's upsetting. R. Just because I'm not posting doesn't mean I'm not there. This is Do by Friday, a weekly challenge podcast. This is fun. And my landlord in a little tragedy. And I think for him it's like you're making fun of the way I talked.

My new trick is trying to start so have you spent much time with this? Uh I love this Challenge, challenge, make Lizzie Kaplan on your computer. And yes, I'm overthinking this. I don't need to entertain the whole world and I don't want the whole world to try and entertain me. The reason you do that is because you want to look nice. Um Andrew Garfield Never Let Me Go. That was great. I do think it's kinda cool. Uh-huh. You're about the brain is a pirate thing. I'm sorry! Hello. Not not super like critical to my growth as a person, probably, but who knows. Yes, so much. But you see you see There's Lizzie Kaplan in um her and her and um and uh Adam Scott were a lot of my focus. You know what I bet people are really not feeling any shame about loving these things from the from two different eras of the internet.

It can be it can be both. Y and you selected your office It's worse than it ever could be. Certainly your mind, but also your your body is changed by trauma. Honey's cute! Oh no, I know. How great are those Nicolas Cages though? Those concerts where people go in one and watch a projection of a cartoon girl and scream. I do remember they had a big status board up and that they're But like so the I mean, so I went into this thinking like I've already kind of fucked up a little bit because like I said last week on the after show last week, uh How are you? I can't I'm loving this because I can't hear it and I'm very excited to hear it for you. Um three things. Um, but I still need to be funny for money.

And like why do you do that? I always think about that kid in Paul's case. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. But there's no doubt that I've finally found my call. But but like also she does, I don't know how to describe this, she does well in Alex I had three devices open in Universal. Call someone on it? Have fun with it. It fires one round a day! I mean, it's uh fine. But as I've gotten older and I I like to think I've become a little bit more I never remember if it's sympathetic or empathetic, but the one where you think about how other of people feel. You're not seeing their backstage. Not you, not you, but other people, the people who don't listen to this I don't have any. But no matter what it is, it will be worse than I can imagine.

Shared clipboards. I love her face guy. Have you figured out how to we've seriously gotta do the challenge. We did have two challenges this week. See also fake resolution um number three. Oh. Okay, I'm gonna crank up my can so you might get a little bleed. You paused longer than I've ever paused in my life and I'm a big pauser and stammerer. It's so loud here, Alex. It's it is you know remember that wonderful thing on Max the thing Pat Roth said on the podcast with Max a long time ago about Like well I probably I I accidentally said a word that you think is funny and you couldn't get past that. Some of them are pretty I think the Martin Star as Kylo Wren. Um honestly Jane Lynch is kinda uh kind of looks like one of those mobile.

And then you can filter everything. Is that for pirates? Come do my Friday where I'm just mean to my friends for no reason whatsoever. Let's keep going. What's happening?
