316. Turmults Inside Coxmas

Good after morning. Okay, everything's back to normal. The thing is, they don't even realize it's a dog whistle. And like cultural hegemony, Jeanette, cultural hegemony is hegemony. I go and play my music for 46 minutes, but all the rest of the time I'm driving or I'm sitting in a motel room or I'm dealing with just like the terminal inconvenience of life on the road. And I think it's fucking great. But uh the the thing that this uh rich woman says to the staff is uh come come in the jacuzzi, come in the jacuzzi, beat me, let's switch places. Oh god, I love that memory. And like and what was it that made me think that explosion 'cause there was like a small explosion of something, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah.

It's a little bit of an exaggeration, but I take your point. as in like no I can't travel to this thing or do whatever. We're not so much more than a lot of people. I don't hate it. But no, they they don't but they don't see uh the e even like possibility Before we go into spoilers, all I wanted to say was I agree with Alex. And but it's exactly fucking what it's like to be on a cruise or to be in any kind of luxury I don't know what back on cruises, but any luxury situation. I e yes, I I which is again just slapping it over. Woody Harrelson and get him to go to this thing and so he can get his burger and fries. So weird. But somebody goes, oh yeah, you know it's real good. Shortcut to, oh surprise, like this seems to be a very not that it was a normal evening, but the uh ship's weather, it wasn't necessarily that bad.

Uh one of those women. Sh yep, she does uh like us, uh doesn't know she's not ready for things to go back to normal. Oh my god. it always clear to people like us, you need somebody like Julia to explain it to you, but like, yeah, look, it is costing them money apart from AWS bills to like have on the bird site uh which has caused turmoults in Coxmas. for Cocksmith. Christmas is for Santa too, Alex. Oh, yeah. See cosmos. ri rival Casey Lis who wished us a happy anniversary and I was like, Oh, the anniversary of what? Well, like and and like just again, you've got to bracket all the ways that I'm all fucked up, which is like I do procrastinate, I put things off, but the truth is I like But more importantly then that gave you, because one permission to say things you you didn't feel like you were allowed to say before.

You know, there's that line I'm always saying about and I'm not much of a bike I'm not a biker at all right now because my body's in revolt, but but the thing that I that I the the point that I arrived at with It's about, I think I put this in the document. It took eight weeks to fix. But like and then the mean part of that, the the implication that and the mean thing I'm I'm don't mean to be saying, but I'm gonna say is the problem is if your environment has been designed or has evolved I think that's a big part of the industry behind what makes Christmas so operational is that combination. that maybe that drag queen that is grooming the children has a family or has their own values, let let alone you know, even if they're not tr traditional.

I don't know, at least Gramsci and the idea of cultural hegemony, which is the idea that hegemony means that culture becomes like air. uh you know evolution is a process of a lot of random shit that tended to like we were watching Jurassic Park this morning. So cultural hegemony is the thing that tells us what's normal. you know, hippie who's thinking about stuff like this. or frustrated or disappointed. The the the admixture in our pipes and wiring for two years was pretty fucked up. Because Woody Harrelson and everybody else on that ship, it's their job to apologize for the non-existent sails being dirty. It's partly because like you gotta rent it and I feel like such a sucker renting a movie.

That's what how I imprinted on I think you should leave and Middle Ditch and Schwartz and Tiger King and all those things a lot of people imprinted on. Because Netflix was still giving us our stuff. That's how it started. I don't know. White Lotus, the money season. It's it was almost like watching duck soup. I'm sorry, I'm doing the Angli forgive me, uh Ruben. And in the same way you go like, oh gosh, I I you're a flip model on Instagram. you know, coal mine. Uh okay, spoil spoiled. And they're a couple and um he there's some stuff about money in it that's really good, but there's some there's working out some stuff with their relationship. So th so basically they're gonna go on this cruise on a boat that is a ship.

Summarizer or Chief Summarizer in Chief. Uh the captain of the ship is Woody Harrelson, and I think he's struggling with some he's a drunk. to the whims. Uh now I'm tell hopefully telling you things you already know because you've seen the movie. um making it difficult to enjoy the captain's dinner. Somehow, if you can get in contact me, I'll uh describe the movie for you in even greater detail with images and uh visuals. They got their chips and it's just like that's I know that feeling. You know, sometimes you pay for that because you want that. Like you know what I mean? Is it the wife of the shit guy? With her vomiting. Uh but then I mean the the way the metaphor to me really starts coming hot and heavy is that we've been seeing how It's so over the top.

my girlfriend thought he was cute and then I would say I don't want to cause any trouble. Someone is t telling you. And then it's escalation. Uh Flynn. And they don't even seem like that surprised. She's like, oh can can I buy this? Well, like have you ever had a boss? You have no you have not read the room, you have not figured out what it is, another case of, you know, why don't you just syndrome? Why did you give me this chair? the personal device that appears. You know, seeing the rocket with his name on it, right? uh the pirates let this they stole stuff and then they let the ship sink or or something I guess. Who does something to undermine the rescue because they liked that life better than the life they used to have, I think.

sh she's like clearly breaking down and like God I um she has a large rock and is looking at the influencer from behind and you know like she's And what is what does the influencer say to her? th you s you see your face and is like, oh maybe mm I don't know if I can do this and uh oh and and to answer your your question, I I can see um yeah you know you you And and and five figure other five figure and more jewelry just that you can just buy while you're on that's been doing nutty st nutty or unusual stuff for years. What was when they took down um Westworld? You know, like the clo I mean there's so many movies that you imagine the movies you could make somebody could make for ten million bucks.

They're gonna get made for often 180 million bucks, or they're gonna get made for, you know, two million. Again, not gonna be for everybody, but if you like weird movies, uh this is a good one. It's really beautifully done. Oh, you're doing the Zoom bit. I'm I'm I'm rage leaving which is fine. T and now everyone's gone from Twitter and I I've gotten some nice notes, or at least I think, who knows, they could be hallucinations, of like, hey, where do we send our home screens? Holden Caulfield is here and he'd like to get a word in, which is fucked, man. to make them jealous. Correct. a judgment on that. Every k kid is sick, of course. Let's we can do this this time without anybody yelling at it.

I don't okay, speaking for myself. That's cool, but I'm kind of maybe I've lost the hang of it in the same way I lost the hang of time and dealing with people a little bit. event destination wedding in Hawaii because COVID or whatever. Yeah, I mean like I I like people. And see also quiet quitty quitting. I think I'm I haven't, you know, uh to use our word, I haven't done a wholesome accounting to honestly to grieve the the things that are fucked up, whether that's learning loss, whether that's, you know, it could be deaths. We're still not done with it. Like, yes, my wife has a car and drives it. to only accommodate one kind of getting from point A to point B, why would you look at any other option?

You know what I mean? In the same way that sometimes cities decide or had decided for them that we're for cars and only for cars, I think that's a pretty good example of what people mean by going back to normal. An extreme example, uh to be mean again, an extreme example is hey, why can't we have that wholesome life of the fifties? on on uh on on in uh on on signs or like I don't want I don't want gays or or trans people reading or you know drag queens reading to my kid because I want traditional family values. But we also don't want that kind of element, aka uh they assume gang violence in our neighborhoods because we don't value that. In my darker moments, this will not be flawless. When I hear people talk about going back to normal, I'm gonna plant a mind virus that might take root for some of you.

Stop doing that. My kid, like in the middle of imagine you're fucking junior high. the film all the way through, right? She has to like she was told in the money meeting, you gotta placate these people, you get them whatever they want. But the moment where I think it kind of shifted gears and started going to the next level is the scene you were talking about this morning at the pool. It's not normal. of Triangle of Sadness because not everyone the the Pearl Pals haven't uh seen this movie necessarily. And so this week we watched Triangle of Sadness, a movie that I didn't even hear about until you mentioned it, but it seemed to get a lot of attention, it can, and then dropped off the mat. You get the count of three for the pin.

Triangle of sadness. I it went it directly went like right into my brainstem as like, oh, it's one of these fucking movies. But what's what's funny about it is like I finally through Syracuse, I think I finally understand that phrase, the exception that proves the rule. um can f download subtitles for you, but also Plex. under like that little pull down you see adjust offsets and and find so it'll do that in Plex for you but or you become an enemy of Casey Liss and She looks about as happy as people in two thousand six looked working on a Blackberry, doing email all day. sponsorships of uh various companies to do it. Great. Technically a very simple shot. I agree. Slaps because the slap there's like a little bit of a tingle and and yet it's not that you like it, but it's it's it sticks with yeah.

Well done. Um and you shouldn't be listening to this if you haven't seen it unless you hate movies. Uh the the it's uh uh you know, a a guy and a girl. Walked in on the Yeah. I know. The the whole or be just the let's not skip to the the island now. is so attenuated to whether they're getting what they're supposed to get. and your like your TV in the back of the seat doesn't work, you're mad because you're supposed to get free movies. And the woman the woman on the floor in that bathroom is so fucking I uh like and and uh um how rough this particular stretch of of the right like it's it's uh people are getting seasick and then they're trying to eat. uh meaning of life, but like everybody's trying to scarf down this incredibly fancy food.

And if we're saying in terms of sound design, you can hear the baby crying through that entire scene. is on impossibly rough seas and we're scarfing down champagne, hoping it won't make us feel seasick. about your inability to keep me to anticipate every concern my brain might be able to generate. Yeah, and and so she says, uh whatever they wanted is yes sir. And then there's a I I don't know if I forget if it was a pan or a straight cut, but it felt like a panel of the people of color. Scene in the movie cut uh cut to one of the uh pr pretty white girls on the deck of the ship, um uh talking and uh sort of placating this. Looking like they're in practically in like jail uniform, sitting in a tiny little like a mess, like a you know little kitchen down below decks.

I'm not sure if you're not very much to sit there and smile and listen and agree with whatever she says. Oh my god, it's so goddamn destructive. uh cuts to various parts of the ship with the managers being like, Oh, hey, um the the passengers want us to go first. everybody that's available, like it that isn't like it like imminently like in that moment, you know, rushing out food, goes and sings. And everybody sings for everybody's table. Clearly oh my oh my god. tolerating somebody and you can't let the mask slip. P purely, completely clueless as to how such idiots. Like w I mean, I such a great piece of writing, the whole like, oh, just a moment of your time. I mean, I don't know, it's just it's writing and performance, whatever, but that's so powerful to me because that's like I said earlier, that's callback here too, that's that's hegemony, or that's That's the power structure of like those whole power structures whatever I say is the truth, whatever I say is reality, because I'm the one who gets to decide what truth and reality are.

Wait, how like it never has been? But I I think uh some of the older people and the clearly richer people, it's not even a thought uh a thought of I get to decide. And you go like, oh, Astroturf everywhere. utterly devoid. Like uh uh I've had people complain to me like, oh uh like we'll we'll host s we would host a place at a uh like we'd we'd host a fancy Um, I'm sorry, but these these chairs aren't uh like they're a little bit hard to sit in when I'm trying to put my cards across the table. just having no idea why it is wrong. Go going beyond not knowing what I don't know, but but just completely doing something. is fine. put the the extra berry berries in please and I feel I d I just want to curl up and uh and die.

I just want to make sure we don't skip over the darkest and most fucked up part, which is like when things have gone bad. As the beautiful like really, and when you phrase it, I mean like I was really I I think phrasing it that way is important. because so much uh lunacy is happening. Cleaning up all the puke and the shit as if the guests are not. Obviously, a bunch of people died when that ship crashed, but you still have to show up and do your job on the island. It is because some uh i there it's implied that uh pi uh pirates take it over and what and how that happens. Who's gonna try to like blend in on the island? Maybe something like that. Oh, is this one of ours? Right. But you know, there's that one conversation where the three of them are talking to him and they're all kind of like, you know what I mean?

Um that guy is also in um the Sam Rockwell um Sosha Roanan um uh thing about the Agatha Agatha Christie play. Like she's what would you she she is mid fifties? Everything that happens here including I'm gonna take this this this this this uh octopus that I caught, I'm gonna take half of that because it's mine. trying to survive on this island. Hit a woman over the head with a rock. It's all so weird. To be interesting is like if you can't afford something, uh a lot of people don't like to uh obviously don't like to uh wh I mean, why would you want to act as like you clearly can't can't afford it? But uh if someone is rich, they'll always be like, What, that's expensive and sort of do the thing because they think, Oh, they have worked so hard for that money.

And you know what I mean? I I tend to agree with the people who say, well, the brand promise of HBO has been like we've done, we invented Prestige TV. Podcast with Alex Cox and Merlin Mann. Tur turmults. Oh no, not it not at all. I need to start working on the letter. And uh I would have forgotten it except that Fantastic Allen my mom reminded me. Um and we've we've always fre because like yeah, whatever. Having, you know, having a a a teen in this case around still makes it fun. Uh, you get to your own private silly. Hmm. wonder if there's ever going to be a study done about folks who I and I'm not talking about r uh rich people or businesses that made a shit ton of money in twenty twenty But folks who personally thrived uh maybe emotionally or d uh you know, a lot of us had, which was I don't I don't hate Not me.

Whether you f want to or not, or whether it pleases you or not, whether it gives you energy or not. Like it wasn't a license to do that freely, but you know and and it's not it's not even like one thing. Um, you've got walking, you've got public transit, maybe you've got buses and you got like there's ways to get from point A to point B. So if you live on the east coast and you're on near like a corridor, like you can take ham track to go places. basic you know, normal people will thrive on the number of ways they can get from point A to point B. They d they and they've decided that that is what ex I sorry, they they have I don't think they have decided that's what exists. Going back to normal means powerful people will no longer be inconvenienced or made to feel bad about things.

like leaning in to Yeah, it's the it's the inertia uh like not that that makes you a bad person, just there is this concrete thing rather than the ambience tragedy. But the woman knows like anybody. Bugs me. It doesn't, it's it's very it's a very uncomplicated point of view to just go like, well, this is how things normally are. Like the sails on the ship are dirty. Just go clean them. Challenge. Coming on the heels of like watching season two of White Lotus and thinking a lot about White Lotus, it pairs in some ways so nicely with especially season one of White Lotus. This guy and Robert Agers and the lobster guy. I love I love these fucking weird movies. But like it really kicks in when we I think if the movie really kicks in during the the you know the meeting about how to treat the passengers.

What that I'm sorry, I know y'all are smarter than me. Don't do that. Metaphor after metaphor after metaphor in this movie is just pounding you over the head and yet it works you know, ways, apparatus. gives you all of the things. is and more and more uh they are TikTok folks and and it's uh they are unha they're they are admittedly z uh utterly joy. I only know a couple influencers per personally, but number one like in this case we have people whose primary way they do what they do Self-identify as uh unhappy. He is um like a male model who used to be more famous as a male model, I think. A supposedly fun thing I will never do again. you she never gets like a lantern hung on her as a character too much, but you know she's the one that came in and said, Can I clean the room now?

But it it the I mean it's kind of it is a little broad that none of those people like have seen Survivor know how to do fucking anything. Dancing. He uh yeah, some someone um someone was supposed to go with him. Very graphic sequence of vomiting and the same. If you're thinking like the bridesmaid scene, no no no. Pity, it's a pitilessly long shot. Like like very similar in that that Terry Gilliam sort of style. staff is telling everyone, all of the white staff in their pristine little sailor suit things. At what what all the banging is and then hard cut to everybody losing their fucking mind chanting about money. Oh yes. uh already drunken uh wife of the oligarch who is in a hot tu hot tub saying such a great scene Oh, it's pr so good.

Oh, that's the face. And like like you said, as the uh l like from from the top down in in terms of the staff, uh literally uh on the ship, like he starts at the deck um the head blonde lady is like, hey, uh we gotta delay things. It the fact that it exists, let's set that aside for a minute. Carpe diem. And uh be because that's the a thing that you need to do. Yeah, all right, all right. in this film is or or I should say uh every face other than the few men who are just And and the person's like, oh, like what's what's the person gonna say? dinner or something, a fancy dinner where you play board games and it'll uh it it was at this like ch uh really cool like ch church and uh some it w it was like the sales.

Uh not worry about so that this is this is a bit uh off um uh uh not r necessarily related to to the this exactly, but I worry about Did you um all right, so so w the other part of this movie that I think is brilliant is yes, we see that there's Yeah, yeah, like I I g uh god, I my uh my spouse worked at Starbucks and uh kept saying, no, the way you order is the ro the rocky s seas and there's a big storm. They've been keeping democracy safe for decades. And then they sell all kinds of mouthful of food. Blowing up. Like little Dutchie that she runs and like don't eat the pretzel rods and like oh my god, all of that was so much better than I'd anticipated. Mm-hmm. Yes, yes. Starts catering to the customer.

Um but she's made it very clear to people like I mean hey look I've demonstrated you people could fuck up a wet dream. Mm-hmm. Did do you I this is another one of those movies that um requ not requires, but is Yeah, you know, the the um what's her name? Mm-hmm. Uh, the the part that um also me I I uh you you see the uh Russian oligarch is her ring and uh other jewelry as oh to remember her by it I'm like no no no we know that's no that that that's we work for that ring yes yes you gotta just let it go Yeah. It was basically like a I would say almost like a a s a small mall. Maybe a scene in succession where th they're on one of their yachts and it's like, oh yeah, the and they bring out the watches for everyone to to look at.

thousand euros. in the nineties, uh like the golden age, the platinum age rather of TV. part of this portfolio that we're really, you know, proud of. I sell shit. Around Christmas. I I've I have this niggling feeling that uh one reason I'm having trouble committing to Christmas is that It feels weird to be back to what other people consider normal, and I still have not done a even a beginning of an accounting of what was lost. And it f still feels and also because I'm Karma Suck, right? I mean uh I'm on I'm still on the problematic bird site occasionally and I oh nope just kidding I too I think or I I too did this, but I was like, I wonder I genuinely actually great time 2020. speak honestly about things where it's we have never been encouraged to speak honestly.

remains largely uninterrogated by the people who say it. So in large part that is a honest to God, like a Tucker Carlson horror horror in influence that trickles down. When when when most people say going back to normal, the mind virus that's it's that has been planted in me that may in time become somewhat at least adjacent to the listener's mind is But it's, you know, it there's something I don't want to say just white people, but it's like normal in some ways. Everybody knows, you know, what is considered an acceptable reason for doing something that's not SOP. as as the woman we'll get into this 'cause it's absolutely apropos of our challenge for this week. Uh, wait, really? You see the first like let's say half an hour, twenty-six minutes probably of this movie, it kind of feels like it's gonna be a different movie.

I found it so absorbing and then it gets so silly and so stupid. Uh can we I I'm gonna say for myself, and and this is this ends up being a spoiler, but I think it's important. Her one of her dining companions. Uh and for the Captain Hamburger. roll my eyes and be like, I know what this is gonna be, okay, and I know what the message is. is through various like g getting stuff or getting money, right? negligence or non-feasance, or you know, because he's a he's a big drunk. And since we're in spoiler territory, nobody really substantially understands what to do to survive on this island, mostly except for one person who's one of the housekeepers. Who's in like the the downstairs? even on a desert island.

arri or rather th like the first night on the ship when everyone is sort sort of No, no, no, no. Yeah, let's switch places. Not Bergman. A a couple of the rich people just think that they are being so kind to uh to uh But like it's it's it's about as disruptive I mean it's basically like when you go back in the kitchen and everybody knows that at a certain kind of restaurant, well really every every restaurant I've ever worked at, when you come and sing happy birthday Oh, and and uh a couple people they like cheer as they get to go down the the slide and they're like yay thank you for for this because money money money teeth teeth. And you need to play along or you won't be doing your job and you won't make money.

Yeah, but it's a good idea. Oh my god, I love that. of the um or or even yes, Woody Harrelson's a drunk, but just the chaos the customers have caused is like they they couldn't even they literally couldn't write the ship You've got to like, you've got to keep them placating. But but it's not random because they have guys with guns on top like looking for pirates. The practicality that some people, especially the women, kind of slide into is so interesting. Yes. service staff, the blonde lady who a as soon as they uh as soon as she finds the survivors on this island is um oh and the software guy um I think, well, uh little column may little column B. Oh yeah. Yes. She's totally gonna kill the influencer.

just enhanced by uh m m your imagination and and where you m want it to go because sort of like filling in things that aren't on screen, you mean? She says, I can help you. And oh God. And I that was another like God, there's just every every little moment that's satisfied. They may show up. I have a feeling about like I I'm I'm not like a Christmas guy. And you know, we make cinnamon rolls and stuff like that. I mean for a little for a while you how can I put this? my own thinking about the the city and how one gets around is that it's not about being pro or anti-car. Right, uh right. Oh my god, grow up here. forced smile is definitely a thing. Of like, you know, oh this is gonna be fun. I'm awesome in an emergency room.

in um uh Monty Python and the Meaning of Life. In in a movie like even an independent film, to do something as fucking ridiculously heavy-handed as the I I was a dingley and could not figure out how to get the apparatus to have subtitles, which I've bro. I uh love this movie. Yes. like basically demand everybody sing you happy happy birthday except you they do it inside of a pool with no clothes on. beautifully at the Captain's Dinner when they're doing the like sort of reception line and she brings it up again this time with the Captain Like meeting the queen. I don't want people to think that this is actually like, uh this is not like me secretly being like, oh God, it was so bad working for for cards.

ever being one of those uh like I I worry about being the white sale like the dirty sales lady because as the ship goes down. It's just so unpleasant. I think is what you're getting at, right? Uh uh anyway, and then mm that's that's that's the the the movie. wife uh her corpses walked washed up on the beach. Basically the purge, you know, inside HBO and Warner. Yeah. The most piquant and painful one for me is the losses of like basically two years of doing stuff with my kid uh that was like stuff we like to do. for so many people that weren't suburban white people and that the people Merlin, I think most people know that and that is No, they think they're you there's it they think they're for for like an i an academic year.

Right. this already if you had lost folks directly during COVID or if I'm Oh really? And I I have uh an image I captured of that the woman who's talking to the guest on the ship, and she just has this frozen smile on her face. There's there's something about I don't know the movies that go there and it goes it it just it it just it it just how can I put this? No. Yeah, that's where you find at the gates. In the sense of in the sense of making uh weird weird demands or not even having a context for knowing why your demand makes no sense. But before the sh ship go goes down and and how the ship goes down isn't from uh a storm. And then they gotta get it. I can live with these people. Kind of where things are quote unquote back to normal, or at least quote unquote, more normal, kind of, right?

Matt? Um Mr. Wasn't a dream. The first half hour is It's a different movie. The first half hour is uh I mean uh obviously as you get to the metaphor slaps, it's like that for a reason and it pays off The uh I uh to get it out out of the way and part of the reason Matt didn't like uh not not just because there's a And then in the mail They start pounding on things and saying, chanting money, money, money. Oh no, I mean that's what I'm saying. And I've got, and this was a Twitter bio. Um and then the whole thing, the way it ends is so strange and so good. What do you think? Uh but but well, the another thing, m Maddie interpreted that moment of the him deciding to take off. See seriously everyone DM me if well uh It's like there are no sh there are no sales for us to clean, but you can't say that.

Anyway, long story short, so I went and I obtained a copy of it. You know, the like fair play mystery rules. They refer to it as a luxury yacht and it's made clear that they did not pay for this with the case. Oh yeah the recently murdered body on the beach, on the Rocky Park beach. Here's my weird take on this and I'm gonna say it's gonna be kind of a weird pussy thing to say, but I I really do wonder this. Um, and other people do. But when you uh you say beam dad, I hear but no, but this is a true example of that, which is like So but you know, Dan Dan's like, you know, is he's a he's an interesting guy.

I've not seen it. What was the point? American, but the do you know what I mean though? I was going to say it's not anti-car, it's just more pro people. Dig Dug Challenge. I know you're we did talk about this offline before, but I wanna I wanna get real specific about that but only you have to show gives your fucking money though. And then I think we're I I or to me it's like uh we're we're supposed to maybe think that something went wrong uh with the pir like the pirate attack, or they just And you can roll your eyes super hard.

But like that feeling of entitlement of like are you still like waiting on me hand in foot extends to when they get on the island and the consequences are so fucking funny. Oh my god. And again, there aren't enough air quotes in the world for normal, but you know what I mean. Oh, I think I used to like the fifties. He's very reminiscent of a scene, a very famous scene in The Meaning of Life. In the same way that people are like, you know, Roderick we talked about in the backyard prequel to uh Roderick on the line where he says, Oh, you must be so you're so lucky. Well I think it's kinda difficult to know exactly what her age is 'cause like when she's being sexy in the rescue thing she seems a little younger.

And the the influencer. Like there's just there's like it's we've come a long way from I don't know. And I was like, oh goodness, I don't know. P you know, cover paper over my own, you know, failings and uh but like you know, we had the COVID going for a while. We may never be done with it. These are very rich people. You've said we need to clean the sails and all I can say, I'm so sorry that the sails were dirty when you saw them. Um no, no, not the host. Like, you know, we watch Die Hard, Christmas Eve. It's not in normal parameters to tell the passenger, even in the nicest way possible, there's no way the sails could be dirty because this ship does not have sails. Yeah, yeah. And like I can I can get why people wouldn't like it, but if you like the weird movies for weirdos, this gets my official okie dokie and I would like to talk spoilers with Alex.

But um and then a very funny Lord of the Flies like things ha like thing happens with her basically running this island.

I don't think it was a twist. But the woman the woman who the toilet woman the toilet maid who has her own private Um, and then the influencer couple pirate the uh the head of the the For this week? You know if you have C. Like I'll wait on you. Just the look uh on everyone's uh the entire staff's faces. And but like oh yeah, that was hard for a while, but we got through it. Oh God. So that was March of twenty twenty. No, don't do that. But like it sounds like it is a performance and pretty Oh, I get to play video games for a living. It's Brazil. And and yeah, I thought it was a daughter and then you see nope nope nope and the wife just has this look of yep, yep, this is fine, this is fine. Probably not you, have you ever had a boss where the boss says something just completely fucking ridiculous?

And the husband immediately recognizes it rec recognizes it as a live hand grenade and then oh wide shot of uh really wide shot of the ship They well they successfully uh survive on this island and go for a walk. Oh quite a bit. I'm making myself giggle. Oh, so I I don't know. But anyway, whatever. Uh but like in this case, it's like, oh guess what? Yes, yeah, and yes, and and they uh sell personal d devices, which are hand grenades. Mm-hmm. This the it's I I hope just hope there's always a place for weirdos to find me. Um I'm sitting in the waiting room. Map. What does that mean? Creosa, but it gets it's so over the top. And that's where, you know, the head, you know, the the kind of blonde-haired woman is so good because she's like, everybody calm down, calm down.

I think. Okay, that's a vi that's an extremely good point. Best one of the best years of my life. Normal means I'm tired I'm tired of this bullshit. Mer Merlin, this is one of the few times I think that Santum might need to pop in and explain the plot. Or like the the well the infelicitous phrase from nineteen twenty eight, no Chinaman. And like she looks about as happy flipping. You have a tilted set. Uh yeah, I really like the new uh the new carpeting. Uh-huh. This will all be fun. Oh God. That's the thing. She has to Are you are you saying no to me? I love the smith. Um so and the movie is basically about going out on this trip. And and and and I loved that. It's and there's a fewer scolding.

Ma'am, the ship does not have to be. It's not it's like not people who are even seem like super surprised that and again, this seems like something out of a No, it almost seems like something out of a um oh shit, eight and a half. Is there anything more emblematic of what is fucking happening in this country? And the couple's on their deck and the the yeah, the the next the uh landmine couple is on the deck and a grenade is thrown into the ship and the woman picks it up and says I didn't I just haven't fully grieved the losses. But I won't just be clear, I'm talking about in the most selfish way possible. When you say stuff like traditional family values, there are people who are like, yeah, I don't want my kids to see, you know, uh beavers.

But uh it came along, I watched it, and I was like, it didn't take very long before there's a reason I can keep confusing. This is a work trip, essentially, for her. But the the woman who wants the champagne, right? And then but then when she like starts saying I forget the guy's name, he he's also in a movie we watched yesterday. It's just folks who no longer have like a lot of folks just no longer have Twitter accounts either because they have been banned or do not want to be on the site. See also like a million things. It's that the greatness of a city can often be defined by the number of options that normal people have for getting fur to from point A to point B. He's like, Triangle of Sadness, you've got to see this.

Yes, yes. And and when the influencer, uh speaking of jewelry, the influencer, um, the the dude or the the model uh asks I'm a fucking prun. Matt. But I uh purchased this now I'm like uh hold hold on hold this actually is gonna bug me if it is not forecast. I wasn't thinking of it at uh I don't know because I I we might need to bring in fr a friend of the show, Todd Vizieri, because I was Um I've several lines from this movie have been Twitter bios for me. It's a very fancy boat with a very fancy trip and obviously it's a yacht that's been retrofitted for whatever forty or fifty people to have staterooms in. Yeah. Everybody's lining up and it's like, oh my God, this is so much like so many experiences that I've had, and I hate it, hate it, hate it. Yes, yes. I think or rather I I don't think it was it was little. Yeah, because you remember like when that she's that introduces them and calls the husband over and starts talking about it's up in the clouds. Do your job. And like now that we're all gonna pretend that quote unquote normal is happening again, and just to be clear here, what does normal mean? It can't be twins. I don't think that it hits you over the head with metaphors.

This oh wa well what's his nay I forget. Russian capitalists and American communists. Doesn't matter. I'm just glad there's a place for this. I know. But I was just thinking like it th it feels weird this year, and I think I might have a speculation on why it feels weird. You gotta keep doing the thing. And just to be totally honest, like, yeah, I want that too. No, bad. Yeah, it's a movie. It's so da-da in some ways. The Anglicised friendship. Yep. Well, the uh and the the whole thing with the like b buying the expensive uh uh uh jewelry when she says it's um like twenty eight Look at that one. And then that leads to, without saying too much, leads to a series of events that are really brutal, hit you over the head stuff.

Oh I'm so sorry. I love this movie. Mm-hmm. You know, just the kind of stuff, dumb stuff a family does that's you know silly, but it's your silly title. But like, that sounds dumb, but like if you got a bike, if you got a scooter, or uh like a my case, a hoverboard, you've got You probably to to quote Michelin Webb, provided your school wasn't free. Um, not really my tempo, but it's about that trip and It's it's um it's like Brazil meets like a Boon Well movie. My boss would love it. There's something I can't say here, but I would just real quick in passing, I wrote it down. The im implication is, oh, this thing is just going to happen to us. I interact with people all the time, but like that that death march of like having to like do things And what's normal is the thing that benefits people in power.

I can't tell you how many articles I've seen over the last five years that where I first rolled my eyes and then was like, holy shit about like how hard difficult and expensive it is to be an influencer. Oh my god. Everybody goes and sings at everybody's table because that's what you do. Woman f we call it woman face. And you know you know, I may maybe you don't even ask questions about you go, that's a really good idea. Yeah, yeah. Like they're paying to have that. I think I used to like eating as a family. I've just been I think a lot, Alex, whether I want to or not. And I do well how did we get here uh oh m morning can I can I when I talk about when I say say normal and I keep making those annoying air quotes Sometimes they overuse smash cuts.

But it really get ready. It's stick with it because the moment you see Woody Harrelson standing at an angle on the boat, one of the most amazing shots. Where like you think about that scene in eight and a half where there's that, you know, that long line, that parade of people from his life that go to the scaffolding. Uh yeah, I tried to be so. Yeah, they don't know anything different. And yet I am still so self-conscious whenever I order coffee because I don't let well and when I say order coffee, I mean order iced tea and I feel really, really bad saying, can you not But uh yeah, I that m that sure made me feel weird for I I couldn't And uh from what I understand that like I that that's pretty normal, right?

That's that's that's so important, Alex. Which is fine. What's worse than junior high? But the point is it's like the first night and it's like, oh, and like, uh, the poor woman who runs things. But like that's when it starts coming hot and heavy. Having no no context for understanding what it is you're you're asking for. Yes. God, Agatha no, um the toilet maid is Agatha. I have never oh God, I wanted to puke. I guess what I'm saying is I I'm with Andy that like I I I just hope there will always be a place somewhere for something that's We're tired of inconvenience. Um but yeah that that's a that's a fun little twist. It's a movie about wrestling. Who is it on staff? Good, good slap. He's having a rough time.

But you know, okay. I would have to think about this and edit it for it to be flawless. And it's like, you know, but like think about this. But it's an A isn't it like an HD? You may have to, if you have good scene naming, whatever that is, you may need to re-enter the name to something simpler, but you can usually find it. Doesn't destroy the thing you love. Like we see the r the oligarch and his wife and then suddenly out of frame. Okay, so boom, hard Oh sorry. And like, you know, who w who comes next? What what's ninety-nine? Oh, I mean I uh I disagree because I enjoy creating fake holidays Like all the things I never thought I was allowed to even reckon with, let alone discuss, with people who are more powerful than I am.

Hamburger and French fries. Like I said last week, I pay for this lift ride because I don't want to have to talk to somebody or be on a bus. People leaving the dining room scre you hear all the screaming and crying and it's like it's just so relentl. I uh oh god, um This week's challenge, watch Triangle of Sadness. Okay, we we got a dig dig dug ch challenge because uh already become instrumental for me He's a Swedish guy. But if someone uh just wants a little recap of the movie, what what would the recap of the movie is that we are introduced to a couple Oh with the scene at the pool probably, right? Well of course I want to ta cause trouble. Um and she's telling this staff member, uh li life's so un unfair.

Mm-hmm. I wanna buy a Rolex. Like Did you say turtles? Shit. You should and just are two of the most sympathetic people in this movie. I g everybody should do do their thing. It's like it feels weird to so abruptly go, Well, time to start celebrating stuff again, and it's like, yeah. Real dark but true. I don't think they're saying that to say, I want black people to be hit with fire hoses again. I'm gonna go back to normal. I mean I've been in first class or even for that matter, business class or economy plus and everybody including me Um, I'm just sitting there screaming at Madeline, that was me, that was me, that was me. But like, and she's decided, it's so weird. And she has that moment where she says, Maybe I can uh help you, Amelia.

It's still going. And it's like they were not set up to deal with that. I think I had a forced smile of some kind for two years. It's like I fucking love those movies. That must be amazing. That could be like you're talking about a Korean eye cream or something? No, the bridesmaid scene is nothing compared to what is going on. I want all of the staff to come here and follow my orders to have fun and go swim in the pool. Uh oh. What or a little bit of a few years? And I am aware of the masks guy and I'm all those things that like you know you're not supposed to do if you're a normal, you know. Or just saying no to me? Ruben Osland in his twenty twenty two movie Triangle of Sadness. So And if you're avoiding Twitter because of the birthday boy, you'd prefer people not do it there?

I'm not a holiday guy. Talk too much, I hate it. And I'm like, okay, Dan, whatever. Um, you know, you can't introduce a character we didn't know about. My boss would be very into me playing out and then but it keeps going. Like this is a ship that does not have sails? And like, yeah, you should be able to go watch whether it's whether it's Sex in the City or Six Feet Under or whatever. Who is the host? Um, yeah, yeah, yeah. But what happens is that definitely at least in part out of the captain's The the original woman who proposed this, the the passenger, was Mm-hmm. That's cool. He takes photos of her, she flips through them, and I said to my wife last night because I was rewatching the beginning last night.

Do you come with a car? Um you know, what would you think this is very much the birthday boy in the way I think about the birthday boy. Mary Coxmas. You and I both keep referring to. It's when the thing quote unquote ends and you go back to I mean, have you ever like had the thing with like the emergency room thing or the like the medical emergency thing? Just like a shot So there's like the building up of like we've already kind of like they've hung a lantern on the whole Woody Harrelson angle from the beginning. It goes in my Pantheon with other things like I say, like the lobster or you know, the lighthouse or these these other fucking which uh what do they have in common? Like it doesn't feel as certainly that we're not in lockdown, people are traveling and running around and uh, you know, whatever.

Junior high is like sitting on a being a smart kid sitting on a Zoom call while the the entire Zoom call was mostly about the Zoom call. Like we got through everything. They're such a flex. Like does everything have to be turned into this like weird public demonstration so you can like tell your friends that like Um and um I I this will be very difficult to avoid I won't keep doing this over and over because I know you haven't seen the show all the way through, but And the thing I I said at the time, I continue to say now, exception that proves the rule, like, hey, you know what? Oh yeah at the very end? It says that I'm in Alex C's waiting room and it's I I don't have it in front of me, but I think it's I did a screenshot.

I wait, I wait, I wait, I wait, as the Micot says. We're tired of being inconvenienced and now we're ready to die. It takes place on a boat. And uh e there's a shot of Amelia being like, oh, maybe, you know, maybe I sit and I look at a window. But I don't even want to talk. Like wasn't I supposed to get free drinks? I know that like the slide's not ready yet, but they want everybody to take off their clothes and get on the slide. The um the the the staff needs to go for a swim.

You know what I mean? He's having a rough time. There's there's a bit of a consensus of okay, let Like, yeah, actually it's you know, I couldn't you would never say, Oh, I hate it, it's bad. I mean even when we say there's spoilers, I s I feel like there's gonna be somebody who gets intrigued by what we're saying and I'm gonna be bummed that I've ruined this movie for them. And I think they did some really good CG. The software guy is so fucking sweet. And uh the uh yeah oh did I? Oh my god that's so intense. You gotta let's call it a pass. But I think the the part for people like me and you is that also gave us license to It'll setting aside for a minute, you gotta deal with parking, you gotta deal with insurance, you gotta deal with a one thousand dollar bill to fix your car when somebody ran into it in the middle of the night.

I don't like frying on it. I never know how to say anything anymore. And you might even be able to do that. Do you want me to buy your Rolex? I also forg forget because we uh you know got we gotta do it, but like it's it's so like uh it just feels so it's another one of these And it's the same way I like traditions that are weird things. But I think yeah, no, I get it. Okay, but let's unpack that. Cultural hegemony is unintentionally um like a like evolution. Normal. And yet you watch it and you go, you know, that really is how it is. I was gonna say, you want to get to the island? I think I like all these things that I've seen in television shows and read in stories, and it's like, you know, we're not the fucking March family.

That's okay. It's like, oh gosh. It's not a little bit I did love the whole like, oh gosh, there's one pirate now who's gonna try and blend in. Twenty-three years ago. Okay. The metaphors are about to start coming hard and heavy. I if they want illegal drugs money. Not quite to that level, I hope, but I've totally been that person. She's a one of those one of those uh For some reason, we started watching Clue on Christmas morning. You know what I mean? Sorry I talked about it. And the more I watched it. Everyone is vomiting. Yes. It's just my uh everything I think is is the reality. Like you don't know what the fuck we've actually been doing here, but you decide to parachute in and say something that makes less than no sense Um but like Your lady friend didn't just No, she spaced that and the day we met last week.

Where the woman's talking about like talking to her like she's a fucking idiot and saying like why don't you go swimming? And I and that like Yeah. He also, I've got his other movies. I was upstairs and uh everything was so beautiful and the sun was out and the sky was blue and everything was so nice, but the sails looked dirty. It's like I know nobody wants to talk about it. Um anyway that's all that's all and I feel like I haven't warned it Alex and now that I'm I'm that particular uh And we're gonna get to that a lot more. Uh did uh when when they first That's part of the thing. But making the uh or w like m when Matt and I were watching it, both of us were like that's the That one was something like, Ma'am, this is a motorized vessel.

I mean if you can't make yourself giggle, how can you make the world giggle? You can you could fly if you wanted to No, bad. Oh, well the scene that didn't like It's only a waffer thin mint Um, and the crew of this ship has to cater She's like, and why do we do this? Is that is that his mistress that was up there talking to the influencer woman? No but the two two uh oh yeah, the private sector Ter term there's turtles in that's ch turtles. It's just that the on the two parts are like, yeah, you could say no to things because nobody was allowed to do anything.

It's like, dude, d have you ever read a fucking book? Y'all need to discover this, go get it, you can get it off the internet. And um uh Um, we get signs early on that this extremely luxurious cruise is not going to go well. The ship's not down yet. I'm not even talking about deaths. Think about the people who retire and have a heart attack the next week. Like, you know, with Dan's. You we do the tree, we do the ornaments, we do all the things, you know. But you know what I mean? It's not even it's not 4K. Um is that they probably would have survived. Like clearly she's about to kill her and then like this Oh oh this is Dubai Friday. Um but yeah, I I feel bad though that, you know Oh my god, I I just started thinking about that today.

But the thing that makes the city great is that you also then have options for exploring between point A and point B and beyond point A and point B. Everybody, you don't have to like it, you don't need a manual for that. And I don't know. Right, right. All he wants is a he wants a photo. Uh it but not j not just the island, how they end up on the island. And the men are running around trying to like figure out how to steal pretzel rods. Yeah I love that another Twitter header, her coming down from the rock. You're gonna come for station eleven next? I'll buy a Rolex. Well, I mean, I'm there. I haven't grieved the losses. But like there can't be some secret thing you didn't know about in a in a in a Hudana.

Totally fun. You can't get the free movies. Guess what guys? But that's the thing. You're the co-host. What does that mean? Do you think that you would have uh mourned The uh main way they uh get money is through Like you said, it's the rickness. I would also like you to write it down. It's like calling him on his bullshit. Somebody has brought a very young baby. Oh I went less. What I worry about though It's those those movies that like like this were like somebody cared about this movie. Like given that this is the first year where like w we're sort of like kind of being thrown back into the deep end or into the cold water or whatever, it's like And I don't mean, like, I don't think I personally know anybody personally who died.

And she says shut up, shut up, just do it. Anyways, that's that's I I the normal thing really Was like y you ever like and it sucks when you paid for it. That's you know, that's being collegial in some ways. Let's say it's your boss's boss's boss. Yeah, yeah. It's my octopus. I'm trying I'm I'm I actually am mentally preparing to talk less in life, but it's not taking. They they feel like No no no. Like she's just decided that like he's gonna be her boy toy. There's two guys Googling quotes about life. Such a ridiculous flex. It isn't like a one thing where I'm like, oh, I'm it's still this or it's still that or you know, well whatever. What are you gonna do? Another thing. Yes. Like, well we you know, we should consider that. Yeah. I go down to reception, I'll buy your Rolex. Hello. You should be able to make your own holidays. People you've missed, like things you'll never do again. There's like these ten rules of fair play, you know, uh mystery rules. I was like, oh yeah, you're right. And like I boy was that ever powerful to me. And then we got married uh seventeen years ago. Absolutely. I'm talking about like the like I tried so hard and my family tried so hard to do our part.

When you say normal, it well it means I no longer have to think about stuff like, oh gosh, I should wear a mask because someone here might be immunocompromised. This is it, I I was hooked on this movie pretty early. We were, you know, like sometimes when we're wrapping up a back to work, we'll like slip in these little things to each other and Dan was like, Hey But just finish this um my um You ready? The older people Um just send the people out to clean it up. You can't grab it, but everybody knows it's there. No. And even if your ship is down and you're on the island and a bunch of people died. Um c man, I really I I really thought she w sh or she she wasn't gonna kill or like I th Oh yeah.

I'm usually the person who can and like the thing that's gonna stick with me forever, of course, is the dirty sales. Dan Benjamin recommended Triangle of Sadness? I I I I started watching this and I think I mentioned this to you last time. No spoilers yet, but like if you ever saw the famous Mr. Uh I eye cream, uh tech products, whatever their beat Boat? When do you want me to come back? Oh you. Well, I I mean hard c But I'm gonna do that thing people used to do on Twitter. You can go off the top rope or the turnbuckle. Oh my god that was so sad I've never understood it my whole life, but the way Syracuse explained it is a way of saying, like, well The Square looks really interesting. Not it's well, but it it's a movie that made me like But the scene when they're all just Now you can agree or not agree about whether that's a rational thing to be mad about because it's easy to take shots at people, but Oh gosh.

Oh my god. And like there's just not that many movies that are gonna get made for ten million bucks. Is what it is. You know he's used that line a hundred times. She's like, We know we gotta do this and we can delay it and blah blah blah blah and you're like, Oh, it's all so painful. Here's a spoiler for this entire movie. Arresting woman face. I will I will discuss this in the after show. The the reason it happens to you is another slap on the face, but you have caused your own downfall. Well the thing is. I mean I am I watching uh enough Criterion Channel stuff to like know how much stuff is out there. No. It's not about being pro or anti-anything. Um, but um, I'm I'm uh hey, I got nothing to hide.

But That would that is so something I would do and then say I would narc out a handsome man who works on the boat because Oh my god. And let's just say that well, you know this.
