No timestamps yet for this episodeThis week's challenge manage your time. Because eventually I stopped carrying around an XLR, except for when I really needed something in low light, and I don't know, XLR, good lord. And you see like, you know, um computers, computers, relationships, you know, um vampire romance or whatever. I'm not clicking it. This is a headline I just saw on the Washington Post, which I'm starting to believe exists only to needle me. Because why Alex? What a willful misunderstanding of what I'm saying. And you try to figure out where the trash goes. Was that Ben Knobs and Broomsticks? I decided to become an oncologist. Is it's impossible to zoom unless you do a screenshot like a weirdo. Boy, ready for a flex?
But if what I really, really, really want is uh Dutch pee-wee potatoes, I'll order like four different kinds of potatoes, assuming that none of them work out, and then cannily try to pick refund or replace. But in order to hit like y you know how in some uh like when you're ordering food from an app and you like you don't want a side of something, but in certain it like in Grubhub, you need to pick a side, even if you don't want any sauce. with different UIs and different instructions. The the guys who have hustle and i this guy just seemed to me like really polite and good at his job. uh whether it is or isn't their fault, it seems like it's their fault. And the guy's like, and of course, this is QED, I had done my replacements.
And I'm like, oh that's okay. And he's like, mm-hmm, it's not really enough for me to take the turn. I was like, yes, of course, I understand. We've been talking about a time the whole time. I I have disordered eating, the, you know, that's a bad example, I guess, but like but like I don't even have I don't even have a screwed up sense of time in a way that feels within normal parameters. So it's kind of three problems in that instance. Well no, like uh I agreeing to things is part of what I do at my work. But we d I mean think about I do I do think about the the like, you know, s uh silly seasons and jubilees I've had with my family. The first time that you drive somewhere that's two and a half hours away, it feels like it takes fucking forever.
I'm gonna break this analogy because I think that that's a really that is that that is about attention. No, the reason I do that is because I can almost promise you that even though it is, quote, only three minutes, three minutes is one of the most fantastic amounts of time to forget about something. No, no, I can do this forever. I didn't even post it to make money for my kids' school. That if my own I would try to I love our relationship and its evolution, but sometimes it is a little bit like doing a podcast with my grandmother. I don't you're not in charge of me. Who would be Mickey Dolan's? Oh yeah, I don't know Q E D. Don't fix that. Imagine the letter W here and then and then the the body of water.
I can't do it. Uh well it's unfortunate that everybody has to have five jobs. You lost the ability to sort of regulate how much hustle was healthy. I think I understand what you mean. Post pictures of your feet. I'm saying, what the fuck are you you're gonna what? Uh-huh, thank you. So IOS app for uh I don't know I just know this about Ador Dash and Instacart. what I always kinda Well, because that i it makes sense. There's a lot of times where it's like I'm ordering stuff for my kids' lunches or I'm like I'm a little picky, for example, about seltzer. Give it a couple of days. They're still gonna get 20% from me. So things like Best Buy and Lowe's, I will occasionally buy something. G toggle, which I did.
It's a it's a peer-to-peer Falcon network. Twitch. It's just that because it's really far in the future, it seems like w why does that happen? It's like a a thought technology. As John Syracuse likes to constantly remind me that those things that we perceive that feel very true, well, but based on what? But and then the more times you do that trip, the faster both directions seem. It we'll link it. It it would be a little bit like when you talk to people and they'd be on a gaming, you know, mic and headphone thing. Because my wife always does all of her meetings through whatever. DSLR. Because like whether it's the this is real quick and let's please not bog down the opening of every show with this.
Well no, you say like, oh God, is this your first day? Don't think I have the confidence to giddy up. Yeah. Um, I did a f I I I doctored a photo one time of an area at our Walgreens that I've come to call you you know, like you look think about better still, think about a Barnes and Noble. Sort of think of the phenomena similar to Hatchimals. They're like branded things where you pop a not a pimple, but like there's a there's a pop. Bag in the sack kind of thing. What's that? Just just saying general. Uh, you know, the monkeys, uh Jimi Hendrix opened for the monkeys one time. Like probably started as box space car and then box dash car. He's the white and the other guy is the wheel. To be an advocate for effective altruism.
But uh I know I'm on the list of Portmanteau's and sp boys some of these are really like nails on a chalkboard, I'll send this to you. Cattle, cattle, and buffalo. I you guys both love fake drama and then you both get your actual feelings hurt about fake drama. What's it called? I didn't realize that this was literally trying to be a complete tie uh like it says on the Wikipedia page, this is a selection of poor man two words. But I feel like uh uh it it's one of those turns out things where it was i it's intuitive to me that one of the roles of what's the old word? To to quote my ex-wife, uh, you don't have hypoglycemia, you're just impatient. And I said I said to her, I said, I'm really sorry you're gonna divorce me in about four years 'cause that's a really good line.
Something something reference to journals and things like that. Dude, there's Yes, unfortunately. That's not that funny. Did he dash really well? No, no, I want to know about the DoorDash guy, especially I don't know if I mentioned this. I I went down. You know, but like in Little League they would say, I want to see hustle. uh if they if you you know even if there was a pop out that anybody could catch you always run it out even if the first base person they if the first base they caught it and you're out as a force out you still run it out not when other people have decided to cross the street. Hustle hustle is doing the right thing even more, especially when it's another way of really it's a it's a physical manif manifestation of character in some ways.
Or ro what Robert Persig might call quality. to run quote run it out. the the physical and mental exertion that you do because it's it's who you are. uh Coach Gridonsky or whatever his name is. And then if that's a pop-up, you obviously do what the coach tells you to wait until we see what the play is gonna be. Uh always run on on third strike. Uh but all I'm saying is in the young version, whenever you're playing baseball and the people are not you can't count on them to do the thing that's quote an easy play. Like you can't count that there don't count on the fact that somebody's gonna get it, pick it up, the shortstop or the left fielder or whatever's gonna pick it up and get it to first. might have dropped the ball.
Which is like, well, yeah, these are best practices for like don't don't leave any food on the table. Think of all the productivity porn. Folks are going to n expect hustle when it does n the only benefit is uh to uh You know what? Play my tape. With trash in hand should I take out the trash? Politeness and hustle. Oh, there's a word I heard, and now I'm confused. That's an O Google boss and I do have a boss because it's a capitalist boobity boobity baby bobby. 'Cause I don't really know how to disguise a voice, but I like that one. God, I think that man reads so many. or something like that. When she says Ibidah or she talks about um I mean she just uses so many terms from the industry, but y she uses them because Sh that those are her paints.
So Julie Alexander is, oh god, I should know this because it's her title on the show, director of s strategy at Parrot Analytics. Now, ha-now why do I say that, Alex? There's been occasions though where like it's the food is approaching, right? But that just just as a counterpoint, and I understand, you know, you do you, but I'm saying the guy who runs, I'm gonna go out of my way to give that guy all the stars and write notes and not hit skip this step. Specifically, why I'm not gonna do Instacart, because that is a whole other situation of something I know that I would be bad at. Make sure you take lots of photos and shelves of shelves to show people where No listen, here's the thing, it's so important that especially if you're a diamond cart, make sure you take lots of photos of shelves and then the thing the thing that you you should never learn whitest photo of a lot of things and just say things like even though you have specifically, specifically requested a specific replacement, even though you've specifically written a note that says refund is fined I'll even do things where it's like I'll replace and refund against items where it'll be like I want this thing and I want product A and for replacement give me product B.
So like don't don't feel like you need to like keep reminding me there's water in USB chargers. by then having to spend my evening with my phone beeping at me as I strain, strain to see what it is you sent me a photo of. Like occasionally I've had to do the thing where I uh call a what's their email? say you say like yes I've gotten uh my my food or or like order stays open even though you never got it and someone ghosted you. Like, you know, for Michaels, I'll order extra markers or whatever. If the if the person who did the order says refund, still try to find them something. or a drill or something, right? Well, and I was like, oh man, that sucks. And he goes, uh, you have to cancel it. Customer service at these places.
Helpful. So I need to go find a phone number for Instacart. altruism that's what made him do fraud. Kinda kinda sweaty. Which I've done before and can be very helpful when you're having some uh uh b brain i issues which are pretty much that does something called block scheduling with your calendar and that helps your brain, right? Tells me. Yeah, I mean we talk about all all the time about how the pandemic has like shifted our perception of uh time and how I might be blaming it, but I s I still feel like my sense of time which has never been terrific, but it's broken in a different way since two thousand twenty. And why is that? We also the way we chose to conduct ourselves combined with the ways we didn't get any choice in how we conducted ourselves.
the the the links between forgive me time and attention because they're they're they're very much related beyond just like a a talk I do at Google like time and attention are extremely related. So why would it you know, like why would I I can't feel excited about doing that tomorrow. You're not making a better case for why your life is a piece of shit by saying other people make you busy. Don't get mad at me about your stupid prices. You don't have to do anything but die. You know, but but but one of them one of the big ones is so blindly obvious, which is um in some ways you can ha it's not that you can have as much agency as you want, but you can certainly give away as much agency as you want.
speech. It's called uh on my Kindle forever I've had the uh sample of a uh book called Your Brain Is a Time Machine. uh had uh this guy on the the author of this book I wouldn't know about Vanderkoch if it would have uh yeah yes interesting I wouldn't know about my Dutchman my traumatic Dutchman. You you know, or you know, or your annual your cat will never care about you, no matter how you're how many years it's been. Yeah, and uh th people pretty much it's it's not that they completely lose track of time, it's that their bodies And then they think, oh, it is it's only been four months since I have been underground. Uh the w I apart from being able to say, well, it's just a hunch that I've been here for this long.
s extend human lifespan, i it's like uh people more scientists are asking the question of like, well Uh uh sure, so sometimes it feels like it goes by super, super fast, but then I go back and uh as I'm thinking about it, it feels like Like I remember this morning we were at X. It's just 11 p. If you know, or or how about this one? the the family was living at the time. And again, I can guess, as an armchair uh turns outist, I can guess that, well, y it hasn't it hasn't ended yet, so why would it ever end? Almost stepped on that one. It could this trip might feels like it might go on forever. Right, right. Time and attention are intertwined beyond just the obvious ways of that being a phrase that's fun to put up, you know, a preposition or whatever in between.
Um, not a proposition. And if you don't manage your attention well, then you're not gonna know if you're spending your time on the right things. so that you can, you know, get into uh a good pre-med program and then the medical school and then that uh it goes on and on and on. you and you never or wasn't worth the effort or whatever it was. Yeah. Think I think there's something really valuable in seeing those as being very related because the oscillation of focusing on time versus focusing on attention also can be very And like I I I I would just encourage everybody out there, whether or not you like me or think that's a good and interesting thought technology, to start looking at places in your life.
where you might be surprised to learn that time and attention are more deeply entwined than you could have realized. fan, but um let's say okay so here's uh just a little quick handful of things because I always uh you know I'm me and I'm sweaty and I feel like I have to sell past the clothes. And then what I want you to do is to denude your body or your space of anything that gives you a cue to what time it is. Of course I can forget what three minutes is. I'm so great. You know what though, in fairness, if it were the blonde lady who looks to the side, I don't remember. D do you have more uh uh I can talk more about this here or I can talk about I can I can talk about it more in the after show.
I I feel like if I feel like uh if I had this and looked at it, it would be I would find it kind of relaxing. make good on my old affiliate money. You've just shared before that your shrink has a really complicated uh setup with black magic cameras and I believe he had an ATEM at one point and it just seemed very impressive. when she was ninety three. Every single person on all of her calls ever is just talking into the air with no cans on. costly and less costly solutions for these things like uh like the Bocaster uh that we both got. For the for the like I've got the dip switches, the numerous, numerous dip switches set up the way I want, and I've got the limiter set up the way I want. Right?
File you thanks God this is see this is so boring. Um, I think you you you get the hook in very early on making if I could talk about the show, talking about the show, talking about the show. Here again. Send me your safe word and I'll make fun of it and then you can pay Pal uh Alex uh seven hundred thousand dollars. Yeah, no, it sh she was a little bit like Norman, I think, just was didn't know why she was she was here. Oh, wait. Mm, I w I think that I would like to be Kramer, but I uh don't know if I am m right. Because they put on are are you f familiar with the Squishamoles franchise and and products? God, why is this so boring? But like you see a copy of Strunk and I would not have a strong strap on.
where someone is cre in a somewhat creative way taking two unrelated things and separating them by no more than a space to make a new word. Portmanteau is when you you you're saying portmanteau is when you take two words and put it on the words. Uh but you know whether I bet there was a time is from motor and hotel? Put this in the uh portmanteau page on the internet on the uh internet science site. Yeah, it's so cute. Oh my god, suitcase is the word. can be perfect or unintuitive. Casey and I stand up for each other because we both have to deal with how John is. Get hunk I I don't know. We've got we've got a group. Yeah, but Wait, wait, wait, are you on the page? Puggle Edget Pop Animatronics.
Silk is from soy and milk. Like Gollywalks, Cakewalk? This is trying to be everything. Hangri may have partly grown out of our ancestors' need to find food by very bad. is is uh you know but it's related to the the originator the the portman the Mr. for I'm not good at math. Don't see exactly what Don Jr. out of our ancestors' need to find food. people who are just a little bit uh annoy. that it's f as a consumer of it. You haul asked a first and you run it out. You keep running through that base, you hit it, you make the thump, and then you kind of veer off a little bit to the right, so you're out of play. This is values. I'm not gonna run it out. I caught almost no balls. If you ha if you had run it out, there's a pretty good chance you would have made it onto first.
If the catcher had dropped the ball, he or she now has to pick it up and throw it to first to actually like force you out or tag you out. and running uh t running all the way uh to to first, g always running. A lot of people No no no I I didn't ask you to explain the sentence I asked you to say it again. Because often even though What is w didn't you also use the word PvP? Maybe it doesn't matter uh even though yes, this is why I never surrendered Pokemon Go when I'm doing PvdP. That's the I'm talking about doing it right and doing it fucking hard. gr great. Hurting fat children. uh sh as also show uh showing up because uh the stere the the cliche that I have found to be most true in my life is uh showing up is have been c corrupted in thinking that soul that me me is just me individually, me as a single entity.
When someone told you in uh 2022 that they value productivity, would uh or or sorry, no, if they valued hustle, w Where is there a concept that I I feel like we're doing a little bit of a money part of it? Oh god, downgrade down what's called downgrade? God damn it, she's so fucking smart. Why the fuck are you thinking of becoming a DoorDash driver? Should you really be driving to strangers' houses with hot food? Hate crime. Because uh you don't need to like there's that that is why I'm not criticizing door dashing as a profession or side hustle, as you say. for anything where there's not a replacement. Threads from these folks. Hey, I I know how to, you know what, we should do a challenge. Oh.
Also order me product B and as a replacement you want to guess? But I get my I can only guess because I'm trying to grow as a person that as much as I try to be as easy as I can like that and to not have I'm not gonna say I, you know, this replacement I picked is fine. I have to also assume that that shopper is using the training they've gotten from being an Instacart. is because th people get different versions of the app like the iOS app and the Oh tell me about oh I'm so into this iOS and Android app that is used by the Dasher or the Shopper is different on both operating systems. On Android, you have to send a person an a picture of an empty shelf. Yeah, you know what I mean? Both. and use this time for something else.
I mean, first class, people wouldn't pay for first class if there was a member of the staff who sat there and told you stories about when they lived in Iowa as a kid. You part part of that is you you you're buying the right to be left alone. Which I hope is a nice way to do. But the more c connection you have with that person, it also gives the impression that that person is. doesn't want that contact. So weird. uh I forget w which app it is like um I'm for instance Grubhub like you can't order until uh you Hey uh Right, and you get the equivalent of Amaz Amazon saying, you know, hey, you know, well this doesn't say this on the message, but yeah, the only reason you specifically ordered this is because it'll arrive by t tomorrow.
'Cause most people just won't follow up on or th or they can't. in the app and they're like, well, I can't do it either. story about that exact thing happening. And most importantly, to my purposes, they did not have the hero item. to fix a problem. Because it rids the the wonderful phrase, a wonderful portmanteau, if I may, true duckin. Just like my ancestors. to be a right of sun protection. It really does sound like an off-brand sunscreen. These are all moms boring nonsense words. to toggle, which is the timery and hourly. Yeah, right, right, right, right. Done at this point. and how our brains work with the concept of time. I'm it's boring to talk about, but I really do feel like I I I I th that's not because of COVID.
uh time for future events or how long ago a past event happened, I'm wrong about it a lot, but I'm not even wrong about it in consistent ways. I can't believe let's uh cool here's a quick one you come back from vacation and you had a good time, let's say, which obviously this is not my story. Oh wow, I can't believe that I was gone for 10 work days. at that. Which suggests to me that I have a certain I I've developed a kind of disordered thinking about either cause pretty bright kid is gonna basically just sit there while the teacher uses Zoom to yell at kids who don't have the resources for a dedicated parent standing over them telling them not to. But like and I have made that a study, but I really feel like I have more to fight than I ever have in terms of like the way the world is, the way everything's so fucking broken everywhere right now, alongside all the post-COVID stuff.
Especially for the sort of person who like rolls their eyes at the idea that busyness is a truth. my figure for brain lock is to s is is to point out is to point out that and you just made it worse by feeling like it's not your choice or your process. That's that that's the thing. At this point, I that that I feel like that's a big part, a big part of the wisdom project for me. if you like the takeaways, the seven takeaways, the seven things we learned. I really tried this week. years at this point. And it is a very, you know, that's uh a super you it's a very thirsty title. But it is um the neuroscience and authors don't get to pick those. and how we uh you know Is this kind of related to that thing of like if it's more than ninety minutes your dog will think you've been gone for years.
To like his argument and a lot of studies are sometimes it can be a detriment to humans. it it it ends up that their days are either like twenty-two hours or twenty-six hours. lyric correctly. A week? And now I can guess why there's landmarks you're familiar with and like oh it's vallejo. All right, I'm I'm I I'm done my whole uh my big thesis. If you don't manage if you if you don't manage your time well oh god how did I used to say it? And I do I I I'm being hard on myself. sort of model of effectiveness, efficiency, all those productivity, those kinds of things straight out of it. It's been instrumental for me. like, you know, climbing the ladder at this company or what was I watching? You know, perhaps a great line.
I I see also all my friends, numerous handful of friends who were lawyers and didn't realize uh until they'd committed all the work of schooling and law school and the bar. But like the ladder against the right wall is to me a such a great example of so many things including attention, which is like attention is the thing that tells you in your life, especially if you're somebody with attention issues. The dumb examples, right? Oh thank you. And the all the all the people who would in my straw man roll their straw man eyes about this straw they eyes are are people who go like I know how long a thing takes. If you really want to do this and really learn something from this, pick an amount of time between two minutes and 20 minutes.
It's been nine minutes, no shorter, no longer. You don't know what three minutes is, even though you've experienced many three minutes in your life. Do a very trivial experiment that will very quickly show you that you're wrong in ways you don't even know yet. mm uh box of books or similar, right? Fuck yeah, I barely got started, but we'll save it for another day. flex of privilege, but like there's a thing uh so I used to be a person that i i if and when i ever link to anything on amazon i'd always include an affiliate link And then I became really frustrated with how often people were finding reasons to link to things on Amazon. without the affiliate link, affiliate code, then don't post it with the affiliate code.
Like a it's an Empire Hallway title. sweaty but like I n I almost never post an affiliate link because you know that's my albatross that's my sins that I have to I decided to uh to commit an act of extreme bravery and to use only my studio display, microphone, and speakers to talk to my shrine. But and yet it is we're thirty-eight minutes late. do everything the same way always, which is I sit at my desk and I go through the USB pre and I wear cans and I talk into this John Dickerson microphone all of this um all of this you know virtual podcast gear in order to just do a zoom call about straight A's. In the le let's say uh less enthusiastic uh genre of of podcasting, where it is more an infomercial for another product.
Um you can change that now and make me sound like an asshole if you want. that a lot of people like the it can be USB or XLR. What's it called? I like having a dedicated piece of hardware that is is good enough for doing all the things I need. some uh this is this is what is called uh forensic data based on the episode of criminal minds I watched. It's just easier to do this. Where we're kind of just feeling each other out. This is our special thing. Yeah. And um pretty much Max and whatever guest we've decided to have on tends to be Oh is that lady you talked about The Bachelor and I didn't know she was gonna be on? That would be so funny. uh and it was not a uh I I wasn't a fan of the oh and for real friends do you remember for real friends I'm fascinated by the I want you to pop off about industry terms, because I actually can't think of another one.
the the trend of toys of soft things. Um, okay, so uh jargon, disambiguation. star power to it or is that sort of apocryphal? of the big style guides at this point say that email is E-M-A-I-L and it's not capitalized, etc. It starts as electronic mail, eventually it becomes e-mail. what a portmanteau was. Huh. But it w was it really a slip of the tongue? Okay. And I unintentionally turned that into Chero. uh uh electronic video game uh are are like musicians. Oh fuck. Talk about no, I got I got pulled into I'm not gonna talk dibuosey. So so would you please um so what what Alexander is looking at right now is the hang on hang on hang on hang on And uh the original, just so you know, the original is a GIF, or as you say gif.
w uh one. I have to go urinate. Oh, okay. to the right of the foul line. I want to see I want to see effort from you, even or especially when it's not valuable or necessary. A young person. When you come in, number two, when you come in from the field, I want you to run. You run from the outfield back to the bench, right? We cross the street like the thing I see on my kid. Never been there on time, you still show up on time. said it doesn't m matter. You follow the coaches, you lead off the amount they tell you to. This is this was embarrassing that our coach made us do this because it made us look like idiots, but now I resp I respect it. in time and the person will catch it. Like, oh, such a time junkie today.
Mm, like I I would say if I I think you I I think you're infected by this bullshit millennial idea. it is so easy to conflate it and my one for me. One of my I I don't often regret things. It should always matter to you. Are you trying to say hustle's not a good idea because you tried too hard to do? Versus a phrase, how about this? Uh why hustle? Hustle. It would be That's because you're corrupted. Was it really Woody Allen? Uh someone talking to you about why their new company is cool. I forget how it eventually came up. And when when words mean something, I just when you said I value hustle, it's like, okay, this must not be the full story. No, and at this point you don't you don't even know.
I imagine maybe if I listen to Ben Thompson, I'd think Ben Thompson does this. And this is still true to this day. So, you know, whatever. I don't need everybody to do that, but when we are awarding top marks for like all-time deliveries, it's probably gonna involve somebody who ran doing from a car. And I think, huh. Criticism. Safe way. God, everyone is set up for failure. implicitly drag me for being a pain in the ass. this experience of convenience turn into something that's basically my whole evening is corresponding with somebody who wants to send me photos of shelves. I love the ones though where it's just a photo pointing at Neosporin, where Neosporin would be. that they had a version of the Instacart app that's kind of similar to mine with extra stuff.
and uh a a d driver as uh possible. I don't know. like an employee of the company versus so that l so they don't So this is you you're t you're building the case here for why Instacart to like uh uh this part is like speculation of like then you reach like their end of the customer service, you know uh You talk to the person and I'm like, hey, totally not mad. coma, like maybe, you know, really kind of a third of the way down the peninsula, shopping at I think Lowe's. So there were like three items, one of which was the hero item. At one point, he very candidly said to me, uh, they they don't have most of the stuff you want. So I'm not really sure how to do that. You didn't feel this this trip is worth doing, uh, which I understand.
You everything I've got to do? came out of me mostly wanting to uh try a new uh bit of software that automated basically You wanted to do this because. with a new piece of software that you thought would be cool and it would help you manage. To, you know, um reach a state of hustle, I suppose. It's it seems like it's from two different ineffable periods of time. I mean I and I'm like this is not a joke. Well, time just in general. And but then even then you're like, well yeah, but like when's the last time we stayed at Auntie Susie's house for Thanksgiving? Three Thanksgivings ago? Some of my time fudges since or oopsies since COVID times don't fit neatly into any one box. The way that we were there there are tactical or practical reasons why we're more likely to accept that in the future than now.
that you wouldn't want to have right now. Does it make you feel better about something you've agreed to? And like, if that's the case, well, I'm not going to agree to this talk for this amount of money and travel and et cetera. C word all day and be like, well, well, capitalism, capitalism. accept that you are the one making yourself busy. The the harrowing realization that like Sisyphus keeps pushing that stone because he's convinced he has to do that for his mortgage. how uh it along with consciousness is one of the few things we can actually distinguish as what makes us different from most other animals is how we perceive or don't perceive time. The I'm gonna put this correctly. Having a perception of time isn't helpful for a lot of species, and it is sometimes a detriment And uh there are um there there are many studies about, you know, the perception or misperception of time passing, one of the most famous being people agreeing to spend like six months in uh uh underground so the their circadian rhythm completely changes.
They cannot see sunlight, their body completely adjusts to uh living uh in um uh only with uh uh artificial UV lighting. And uh it turns out But it s it simulates something that lets you have a normal diurnal cycle, but uh some uh but you're not you're not getting cues from some natural something. decide, oh, like now is the time to sleep, which could be 3 a. Commensurate like I'm the same amount of time now. It uh like when you're waiting to go to Disney World as a kid and it it feels like it is thinking and experiencing time differently versus uh you know actually spending uh saying entropy entropy is a certain suggestion There's a couple days I can think of in the last ten years that involved an emergency room or hospital that really you know those days where you're like, wait a minute, is this still the same day?
Uh right. Time is how you have decided or allowed your life to be in some ways. You've thought your whole life about how to climb the ladder and to know that when you've taken this step, you get your next step, right? Well not only is that the wrong wall, but a ladder's not the best tool. Like I do a couple times a week, you know, and it's very expensive, easy to make. Well, do you? But I'm still gonna blow your mind, which is you pick any arbitrary amount of time that's more than you know, just the amount of time you could hold hold your breath. You you don't know what nine minutes is. about time, what the time is, how much time has passed, how much time is left. until I make you learn that you don't know what three minutes is, but even more to that point, if you're being honest and you do this with good good faith and and a good heart, you're gonna discover that you don't know what any amount of time is.
Oh, I uh no, I'm just uh no, I'm just picturing like Jack Conti being um milked by like the Chapo guys and the murder podcast people. I just like you being mad, and I hoped that somebody was mad. file you think sounds better. Learning that there the phrase I always use is w what the hook gets into. Oh boy. Because Chris, uh no not Chris, um uh uh Seth on the OC, who you know from Flash Windows in Trouble. I love that. Or Mr. And by that I don't mean the this new facta version of hustle that means like have seven jobs and don't try that hard at all of them. To me, hustle means show effort even or especially when it doesn't matter.
Okay. You but you demonstrate effort even when it's not essential to what's happening because and again this is sort of like you know in uh a uh what did I say a match of Pokemon Go. Wouldn't that put up a bit of a red flag in any way? Second work here. I mean merit now two weeks of still thinking about it. of his car and he did something I'd never seen before, which is for he got out and he said, I'm sorry it took so long. Hustle. Uh uh certain chains deal with various levels of uh you know, you know, like personal shopping. And then if they don't send them the exact photo of exactly what's there, they're gonna say, please, please fire LaShonda because she claimed that they didn't have iced tea.
Like, just the UI of these apps is fucking wild. public one like two two people in a vehicle thing, like for me that's lift. Which is exactly w what you th would think is it is a logical solution. Um God, we're I'm really dragging this out. But um anyway, there was one where and in fairness, like I don't get to pick where they're shopping, but it was this guy who was like way down below Daily City. That's like asking where a book is and someone's saying it's in the library. I and my family did as a result of COVID, that has made a lot of time things feel extremely lopsided to me. And it it seems possible in this quantum universe of my brain anyway, to for it to feel both like two months ago and eight years ago.
Uh I want to say, well, okay, so COVID is a is a trick, right? you know, like 47 folders was never it when you can never agree to a meeting next week. And at at this point, I it's not a myth. to this guy, Dean uh Mano Mano, it's it'll all it's I think it's already in notes um about sort of the nature of time and Did you think a Snapple toe? And the same yeah, you know, uh there's so much about this that is I'm simplifying and dumbing down and also don't understand. self-imposed experiments of okay, I'm going to block out either an hour or two hours for this specific thing. 20 years and then it feels like even like just the big one of like how long a school year felt yeah in fourth grade versus this the between time and yeah.
With people just focus on the again, this is like a throwback, but like people who keep using that phrase time management, time management, time management, that is a very post And every time I do it, perhaps unsurprisingly to you, I, and I'm going to do a little bit of straw man, so play with me in the space. And if you do that experiment honestly, I mean if you succeed at it, that's great. Alex wants to hook you up to the milking machine, courtesy of Patreon. Last night I wanted to post a link. Um, hang on. Do you know about the law called Hippa? if it knows that and like for example it always thinks I'm Marilyn in D script, even though I've there's a thing you can do, a really cool thing you can do in D script where you like I give it hints where you go in and say like Oh yeah.
I uh yeah, when did that happen? I I believe so. And then White got involved. Brangelina, uh Seth's wonderful coinage, Chris Micah. Disaster piece from disaster and I've never heard that. I uh I just can't be friends with Casey because we are competing for like You guys both were fake drama. Oh, fuck. But yeah, then then then the Chicken McDonald's comes up and of course it smells like vape or weed or whatever. to be the least annoying interaction you'll have today. Wanted to just try a new Dev definitely not an instance of looking for your keys where the lights are. Um, can I talk a little more? Now, do I do that because I'm just stupid? if you're actually doing something other than just trying to know what time it is and you're not, right? All right, we can do that in the after show. Hello. Okay, that's needs to be in the Patreon show notes. Right, which is why I appreciate, let's say, the Pokemon Squishimals Think of them as like Funko pops, but but still.
No, it's like a stuff. Wait, what are you doing? Can I do a couple leftovers? That's so hustle has a benefit uh in terms of like benefiting from like the fact that okay this team's not very good. No. It the order had not taken that long to be delivered, but the guy, like he he pulled up real fast and he got out Around his car. It's an option on everything. So you know what I did? Because it it's yes. Absolutely. And there's all there is actual coxai on this of like why is it that we will agree to things? Busyness, and which is difficult because we have to spell it weird given that it sounds like the word business. Could we extend our l quote like extend our lifetimes by just Classic productivity, first or second wave productivity idea of like I need to manage my time well, and that's why I use a day runner or a Franklin timer, but it's very much based on a factory.
Seven minutes in my experience is even better. That's why you're one of the few guests who are on that you are one of the few people who can be on shows and be a gracious and interesting guest. Was that at his request or yours? Oh, says the guy who makes podcasts, I guess. It's in d so deep. I guess technically that is what I my wife's batchcocks, if I could say, I probably shouldn't speak out of school. One of the roles of being hungry is to let you know you need to find food. And so like here's an and one example of hustle is you always run it out. is to create a perception of hustle as a noun. But I wish I could self-identify as like I'm not gonna try to get you fired guy. That's it. what it it it automated my calendar in a way that I basically did uh the uh v very, you know, s Shortcuts just pop up and tell me.
And uh I uh I I I d I don't know. Well I I'm sorry I'm the I want you to keep going, but I it's not a new idea, but my sen my um my sense of should be regarded and and and treated and addressed as the result of an earlier management error, not as a state of being. You're saying it's a sis sis sisyphus buster. have had this book in I've had the Kindle sample in um the like in my c uh queue uh for yeah Earlier this week, I believe. There's are there are those those sorts of things. But like will there be a time when you never realize your ladder was not against the right wall? That's incredibly kind. because I I well, I'm not sure why. Um I uh decided to try it and it worked out fine. That's like Tina Belcher in major instead of minor.
Let's take someone out of it. Not a backronym, but a recursonym. Oh, I love words. What was his name? This is before we even get into picking, I pick a fucking replacement, a physical actual replacement for every single thing. Help add that to my collection. I think it's not even unusual to go like, oh, because and this is probably just my brain. That it is either it seems like eight hours or it seems like fifteen minutes. for verbing that we can do on the planet. That's pretty good. Oh my god. I thought what a pretty word. I did this week's challenge pretty um yeah, I I took a I I took it and turned it as you would say, I I suppose. Calls for Uber or Lyft while he's like still like eating dessert at a restaurant.
Well is it for the money? And then they get more photos. Challenge! I mean that's kind of how I spent my week. And I I think that is, at least for me, that's been an understanding and a breakthrough about life that can be applied in nearly endless micro and macro waves. Right? that's between two minutes and twenty minutes arbitrarily. Like it really does, I'm sorry to say, just work. Mm-hmm. I'll take that kind of tryhard fucking any day. I did a very funny bit about that for my fake public radio. Absolutely. And they had or maybe maybe it was five items, but long story short, I totally got this guy's POV. You're nice. Oh. We've gone over this in the past, but I assume that you would be the Seinfelds, and uh I would very much be the George Um but like for example when you run it out, that what that means, uh and forgive me if I'm talking down, but there's not everybody's from America or was once Catchers in Little League drop the ball a lot.
Because po possibly had hustle. Who would say if someone told you who uh if someone told you you can start a pharmaceutical company and you don't even have to know what they make? Are you gonna hustle like that when you when you're uh when you're dashing? Challenge this week is to man it manage your time. It's just ducking duck skin. But like and then let's let's combine all of that and I'm gonna shut up in a minute with uh you know um I always get the name wrong Hofstetter's Law. Oh the Sisyphus the Sisyphus Busters. Yep. I used to do media and no. What's the Focus right? Where's the disambiguate tend to be useful? And when you run it out, what that means is you you haul ass to first base. I think it matters to you.
I don't know what the fuck you're talking about or why you're not going to be able to do that. And then we go and we stand outside and if now it's obvious usually what side of this what side of the street or like where to go, we will be standing, it's like a soup Nazi situation. But that's but what I'm also saying here is for different kinds of orders, you and I talked last week about like, oh, you go to the grocery store because you want to get the good one, right? And no, I I went into this butt like being like it's it's bullshit. That was a that was a pretty good show. Oh, and so like to get it out of freeform maybe or something? Don't change it. Maybe I clearly it's not my favorite. No, show some hustle.
And uh Dear Happiness, I got 60 degree milk. The milk is in the trunk no matter what. Uh and I I wanted to play with Zapier and uh Well, it's partly because like not that much has changed at work. That it's don't blame me or the world about what you don't have control over because if you were being honest with yourself I don't want to do it for a living. But but the problem is I think that makes me look a little bit like a weirdo. Oh now see now we're gonna need another one. Um let's look at some other good ones here. This food is terrible. So that's all pretty good. Carter. I'm not talking about any of that. And you think I'm implying that you'd be bad at that job or something. Like it's cold in the summer, it's warm in October.
Mm-hmm. m. There's um, you know, oh there's oh we know we're getting close to Auntie CC's house when we can see the water wheel at that at that store, like that kind of stuff. What's an a what is and? Oh no, wait, is the portrait in funk a Funko Pop style? We kids last night we recorded it and more with the word Chero, which is a single one time on this show, slip of the tongue, and it's still an ongoing thing Or anger. That is a value that you can put in your I I like the noun of hustle too, but the hustle that I'm talking about is whatever the fuck you've decided to do in life, put in some effort. I okay, I I agree. Amazing threads. Well, you know, because that's if I ordered mainly to get a nail gun and they don't have a nail gun, like what do I say to the guy?
That's it. No, I know what you mean. So you you're not allowed to obviously to do this right. I'm so grateful to have a place where it's okay for me to talk about this. See, that's trying. Um that's interesting because whenever I have need of uh support, I first have to get through the gateway of am I calling for support as a dasher? Well that's that is specifically why a lot of gig economy um um delivery uh situations are ideal. That's that's a real pain. Like, look, I'm doing the block scheduling and had something scheduled for e every hour of my day. Um you can't see the stupid smile on my face because I you just no ch shut I mean You know what Alex I'm gonna say something that you can take however you want, but I mean it as a compliment.
I was scared of the ball. Okay. Anyway, um It's called Jim Fairness in the Fourteen Second Work Year. Yeah, I don't know why uh somebody else wrote it for me. You just talked about someone who was really good at it. Does that m make sense? One of the most profound things that I I'm pretty sure you said. It is called uh the neuroscience and uh oh no I apologize. Oh man, look that up on Urban Dictionary. Right, right. on that how is there any way that that is the same, whatever, 16 hours as any other 16 hours? Or something, you know what I mean? Like spend all your time designing a cover or picking a font. Who can know? And in this case, you're saying like if this were Seinfeld, like who who are we?
Yeah, I'm not sure. No, Debut Debusey is the family name of Bucey. I uh think about the huss oh hustle when it comes to your job, when it It's in the book. I'll order three or four different versions of the same thing, hoping one of them turns out. I am so grateful for that. And appropriate to that, I I am already a little bit lost about what the fuck you're talking about. You ever had the thing where you know what I'm saying? I don't think it's uh just a thought technology. Let's say it's a two and a half hour drive. Are you okay? That fits nicely into his portfolio, you know, like his cupcake and a cup. And the Atlantic is the uh but what is What is it with you and the fucking Atlantic? Can you send me a bigger photo?
Because like that that hurts hurts their whole like ten ninety nine. I just I I just uh I I what I want to do is like make a clapping sound and just go, you know what, run with it. Where again, just let me stipulate, you're either whether it's food delivery, uh uh a drill, whatever it is, it's either gonna go flawlessly or you're never gonna see your family again. It was lovely. Yeah. You're not my dad, probably. Uh oh you you got some victims. I think that might be racist. I'm a mathletic see now I gotta put my toes on the right. What was that? They didn't have that. I could have a disordered sense of time in general. By saying other people make you busy, you are not just like, you know, passing the buck.
Yep. How are you? And that's gonna be it, right? Um I I I would never have called as a child, I never would have called that a plush. Yes. Like you it's weird. I'm not here of my own volition. And and in fact, I'm gonna I'm gonna take my sweet fucking time getting to first base. Because the ball has been caught and held. Even when it doesn't matter, put in some effort. Yes. But I do wish, and I don't mean to turn into Larry David, I wish there was a way that I could I could say no talk. Can I ask why? I got I gotta be good to do that one. And it's all and a lot of them are those things. Well not today, we just say suitcase. See a lot of these suck. That's not that funny. It's weird. And hustle is a value.
I'm not saying this for clapping, but like to this day, like with my kid and I need to lift somewhere, I don't call the lift until our shoes and jackets on. I'm so sorry. He's like it's in the app. Well okay, because like normally let's say your time is screwed up. Perhaps you should steady the your ladder before you try to climb. Um where there would be sudden moments of clarity that would make me go, Wow, that's kind of cool. Just destroying safe words on air. We c we we don't have to think about we don't have to think about these things. Never change the show again. You have to what? And once again, you're using hustle as a noun that means not having boundaries. What was it? That's awesome.
See anything here you want. When you order a medium coke, you can specify no coke. You get that one, right? So uh what I was actually doing this week was was thinking about uh uh time management and all of the bullshit I have uh, you know, uh subscribed to in the past. Is that possible? Tell a five-year-old, try to tell a five-year-old boy to stand still and not touch another person. And it it sort of is crazy though, because we don't know why we experience a lot of things. And here again, this is a challenge that I've been posing for over ten years that I continue to pose to people. I don't think it'll make it to the final show, but that's very funny. Not Mr. Um no, spoodle is a high and that's funny I'm spaniel.
Thanks. Yep. Animals did not evolve in a way where that sense of time was advantageous And s that is uh it i it's like a ha ha s a half snapple it's it's a happel fact in in that like yeah dogs have a different sense of time, but they And then and then sometimes that ends up being something you you it seems like you want to talk about for twenty minutes. It it is. Oh my god, I you know what I ran across one just moments ago and I posted it on the internet. Okay, so let me just backstory um as CW would say. Just just for the rest of the audience, Alex can hear this. And if you can't figure it out, that's when you say, not until you have the bag in your hand, you say to the host or hostess, you say, where's trash go?
Hustle. It's all in the book. Like, you know what I mean? Your food is never going to arrive. And maybe this is just me. Like what gets my attention. Um, how do you know whether your ladder is against the right the right wall? I don't want to do it for a living. Oh my god. You never send it. Make me here please. It used to be just to be strunks, elements of style. And you know the other guy, the kid on that show, the fish out of water main character on that show, in real life now, he's like a crypto. Oh my god, it's the word mentioned here. Are you on list of Portman? Because you see I added a new section to the document called leftovers? Yeah, please go feel free to go ahead and cancel it. Groups of a hundred and fifty sitting around the fire, lights go out at night, and then just sit around and be hangry.
It wasn't until they actually were working with other lawyers that they realized how much they hated the work, the actual work of being a lawyer. Fuck, keep going. Guess what? Oh, you know what? I'm I don't know if I like this. It was called the fourteen the fourteenth second work year. It doesn't matter. Not because I dislike people, but just because that's that's why I want this service. I I I don't think that's gonna attract people. The best place I could find to post this was, hey, there's this really cool Star Wars playset. But uh I was like, oh man, I'm gonna be so happy if somebody who hates me looks at the Star Wars and goes, Oh, I made this Pokemon And go, Nope. I can't I can't watch American Idol because I have perfect pitch.
I always called it a stuffed animal and then I always called it stuffed animal. It would be like calling a customer service line from Walmart and them going, Do you manage a Walmart? You've westworlded this real hard. Uh it's like, hey, you're doing uh I I sounds like it's working great. Like just the conditions uh under which anyone's but not even just the conditions. Any of those things. Uh oh fucking. Yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep. It makes me happy. I'm I'm a fan of the hippos, but you know you can't. Like what are you what are you doing wearing that contraption? Wonderful. I didn't really I love them and I hate them. I thought it would hurt me. Did you mean an oncologist? Like she's she's so good at describing in ways I can eventually kind of figure out she's not gonna they're not gonna dumb it down So if you want to say, yes, item completed, you need to fucking send a picture.
So so certainly certainly my lack of attention certainly my my inattention to the details of my life will be cured by acts. And uh the the whole thing with um my uh sometimes uh uh dumb but useful That's trying. You know, today you end up with something, you end up with a word like email. What? It's like either or and but it was just my it was a s it was a slip of the tongue. was talking about. Am I to draw from that statement when you say you're going to try them that you have not used DoorDash or Instagram? We're not mad at those people, but other people's actions do not govern who we are. I uh rescind my threat to top. That's why you run it out. You know what? You don't, especially without trash in hand, from another room, go, You want me to take out the trash?
Yeah, Alex, I think I would be able to intuit that they're using your meaning of this. Didn't I tell you about that? So now we got these other items that are like under 30, under 20, under $10. Like, I'm sorry you went to the effort. But uh more more importantly Didn't Max stipulate that Zapier sounds like the guy who owns the Falcons on the Jeep. And which sucks a lot of the time, but it is a true fact. But like, I mean, and I've re okay, uh great job, genius. And and did you ever play softball, baseball, any of that? He learned something. No, I'm not making it up. Download. He ran around his car. Yeah, there's I think that I mentioned on here that uh a place we love called Squat and Gobble has an option on every single menu item of their capacious menu and it's all caps.
Uh no, I'm going to go to the city. Yes. Yeah, I'm not sure. No, you don't sell. What does that mean? But are you is there a chance that you're confusing it with the bastardized version of hustle as thing that's not your main job but you need it to for I think that the She is the only and I feel like I say it so much that it's starting to I you think I'm like a cr uh people could think I'm a creep or something. Huh. But then like eh, there's nothing that can be done about it for a couple of days. I'll find well. Yeah, focus right. It's in the back, it's in the front, it's everywhere. Kakapoo, I will allow. Like there must be a lot of people who need help at that job because the the like it's not assumed that when you're when you want need help Right?
Oh yeah, yeah. And if you show up with ice and you start taking out trash, and here's how you do it, to take out trash at a party, here's what you do. I hope you will also take into account that I go out of my way in every single relationship, every interaction I ever have with anybody. That's the kind of thing I get more of after COVID. I already live in a city that does not if if we have seasons, they are seasons that are unconventional in type and width. You know what I'm saying? Snappy toe. Zero concept of what seven minutes is. I not only can forget what three minutes is, I absolutely will forget what three minutes is. The um good for you and the reason is I usually whether it's for uh school zooms about the little lord or whether whatever it is that I do, I Tip tip.
I I have a recursonym for this week's show for the challenge that I'm gonna need to get your help with. I think the Washington Post is trying to be uh the cool pop science. Did you say you have to urinate? We cross the street when we're ready to cross the street and when we know it's safe. Because of the I'm not gonna get into that because you've probably talked about it on another show and I'm not actually that interested. But you know what I'm saying? Oh, fuck. I really believe this and I think it's smart. You know don't know what nine this here's the thing. That would be a great girl's name. Getting the hook in. I'm I'm not gonna do the thing. Like listen, Coach, I am not like I'm I'm I'm a weird little heavy boy and I get very tired and I cry easily.
It is my running to first because it doesn't matter. You you're gonna go you're gonna go and pick out people's groceries? No, absolutely. Yes, thank you very much. See see that's what uh S SPF was trying to prevent future uh future hangriness. I'm sorry to interrupt you, but like I I do think that's a fascinating thing and probably a good clue about what's ultimately going on. Uh I agree. It might be hang on hang on hang on. Why? I'm I am genuinely this isn't a bitch. Oh, this is Are you okay right now? I'll never. But but if you've already been thrown out, Alex, if you've already been thrown I could see, I could make a case. But I'm Alex, if I'm mad at you, you'll know. Ask your great grandparents.
Oh, opi it's it's it's a bana huffy. Because I'm not dragging anybody. Alex, I should send you I should send you communicating some some grabs from I was using uh no no no. And then then we started we started drifting a little bit. But that is the kind of thing that makes me go, hmm, perception of time is a very uh personal and sometimes unintuitive and sometimes frankly irrational thing. Well, it helps that not that it helps that not that many people like me anymore. Well, you sound different. Blah blah. Well what are you gonna put your suits in? Not Mr. Is it disaster piece, Alex? If they if the ball went into the glove and the ball fell to the ground and you had you had known it's that was third strike, you haul ass.
You're corrupted by this new meaning. But if you wrote uh if you wrote a book about that, doesn't that, by definition, defeat the idea of the 14? Upgrade downgrade. And yeah, no, that is not a job I want to do again because uh n we talk about gig economies all the time. I'll I'll do it. She just said challenge ducky. Like it it it and I I I don't Well you ever I mean like when when like like a day It's a sense of time. I thought it was real. You're so triggered. You run it out. Over somebody who who comes in and goes, hmm, I had these canopies last week. My favorite is still Planet Comet. But I try to be helpful with this kind of stuff. Um the um um I'm the Ernie. My my my. Um, save it for the after show.
They've like beanie babies. To to find the food the food. I'm talking about going there, running out, running out first base. Oh my god. This is gonna be a very short anecdote, but basically oh, you know what it was? So I be I am shocked. Yeah, uh this is running behind, but eh, it'll probably arrive in a couple of days. You have timery, toggle and hourly? Do you do you ever notice that you're much more likely to agree to something the further in the future that it is? Who knows? I've asked my family and my family agrees, but other people may not agree. I'm not sure. And now this is an ongoing thing. Whoa, spatchcock! Anyway, I just I I mean I guess I feel like I'm I don't follow science headlines like I should.
And let's say there's uh there's two outs and you're on first, other person's on, say you got they got them on the hot corners. Right, right. Because you know, this is not about this is not just about food. I know how to buy things like competitively. Mmm, this has really kind of been You're gonna you're gonna run this one. Yes, and I thought it would be fun and it was it was the name of the software is or are you under an ND? And the same I mean that felt like five years when I was ten. Oh, you're testing me. It makes me happier. Could be, could be, could be. Can I just ask you didn't I literally just do this early I know I know uh uh In fact, you show up early because that's hustle. Because it did uh my hustle in high school did not matter to me.
But he learned something about hustle. You can't zoom in on the photos that people send you in the iOS app. And I said, Oh, it's in the app. You have a thing where it's like it feels like and that's why I say it's inconsistent. You ever get those where you're like, wait a minute, and you gotta do the math and you gotta go. For sure. And it's like, yeah, but like what um with a point Alex and I are trying to help you with is like W Not zero zero as far as exact Connector word. I'm genuinely uh interested. Why why are you laughing, Alex? Wonderful, apparently. Yeah, yeah. Oh, the food's terrible, but because I'm hungry I'll eat it anyway. In in like real life right now or other things? It's just if I went to someone and said that I valued hustle.
Oh, if you're gonna do Woody Allen, we might as well do a a true Annie. Title. The reason I did the order. Oh, fuck. I need to call Instacart and I need to walk them through that you told me this is not really worth doing and I would like to cancel the order. You go like, oh, when's the last time we did X? No, I like it. I would even say if you w you know, if you want to listen to a podcast, that's fine. I am implicitly in charge of you. Yes. I am on Oh no, I'm like on Honky uh that Hong No, I want to hear you out. Oh no, if only I'd gone to college. Okay. I tend to top out around 20 bucks if it's like a small number of items, but you'll never get less than 20%. And it's, you know, obviously it meets the minimum.
It's like eating a golden corral after you visit your mother's grave. Why are we bad at estimating time? This is a Snappy-toe. I mean, I remember last night thinking, like, I wonder if we should call the advice nurse. And I I imagine that's because of cues. Um hello. Uh you're saying so this is something we talked about before and it's it's one of those like you know, one of those like oh if we were the monkeys I won't. An adulthood abandoner is what it's called, right? I am saying that uh y you're you're kind of right. No, because I no no I now matter. Uh have you ever uh taken a lift and they say sorry, uh and uh y like Like I want a nail gun and nails for the nail gun. Uh as you know I'm trying not to make fun of people's names or appearance, but sometimes of course.
And but you know, if you live here you know that, but like if it was rainy one day, snowing the next day, and a Shiraco of heat the next day, that would be outside normal parameters. I can prove it to you. You can't look at a clock, you can't look at your watch. That um they make great stuff and that comes with but like I kinda like the fact that you know this USB pre that is like probably I keep coming back to this And again, it's so important. There's so many pop-ups that I didn't catch, or I caught it and it fell out. But the uh the gig gig economies want as much separation between customer You have to go find a different restaurant. But I think when you accept the oh god, I sound very old right now.
The very first trip time you drive somewhere, but that's sorry. Mm-hmm. My kid knows what these are and has tried to explain it, but it's they're they're poppy things where it's like there's for for for children and you can get a keychain or you can get a whole big set and they're pop. Um I always think of that thing in Strunken White. Right? And so we try to look out for like everybody who's been harmed by John Circusa. Okay, okay, oh god. I'm here because I was forced here by my goddamn family who who wouldn't let me go into the arts. You run it out. It's so fucked up. And I wish I could say to people, please not only don't feel don't feel pressure to like I'm not gonna I'm gonna give you five stars pretty much no matter what.
And I'm like, oh good. Um I mean one of them is it's sometimes it's easier and better not to be an asshole. In that case I'll do it. But um and I and I did post a link to Amazon, but I very specifically like I always do, I try not to post links to Amazon just because I don't know, it's Hooray. Do you understand that I have copies of all of our messages? No, to put stuff from Surfari into notes or to into reminders and how the Cherow Try try try Debut. It's so uh oh god They they like trade trade 'em off. Let's see some hustle out there. Running it out means like you run past the base, but you don't want to be in play. Because it it it it didn't be a tryhard. No, I'm agreeing with you. No, no, no.
You have to call. And I said, I I I I have to cancel. I think it's also uh a practice to try to be kinder to your future self because and more honest with your future self. My pronouns are rockin' me. And here's what I want you to do because you're so good at knowing exactly what nine minutes feels like. Um this is in the document. No, I mean he wrote Charles Webb, like he's a really good writer. Oh, you know what? So I must have. What did no? Mm-hmm. It's it's very intuitive to me now that it would be in the app where I do that. I'm not like Billy Pilgrim. Not stupid, but like don't get mad at me about things you chose. Yeah. It's kind of hard to unsee. Oh, in Andor last night, the guy who's uh uh being a real piece of shit in the Empire says to Deirdre or whatever her name is, says Have you tried just walking up the stairs inside?
I think it's mostly just gonna annoy people who already are members, but uh, just keep talking. It it sounded pretty robusto and it worked okay. I won't think of them at all. That's a good word. No, I have to go urinate. Well then let's make more money with the show. Like which is be because the and and that's why I think Let me just say real quick. No, he's the F FP. I'm gonna call it a connector word. The you know, I mean it's not it's high quality. Like, so I like all those little experiments and like if I needed to travel and record, I would bring the vocaster. But then over time you're like, well, does that make sense? Oh, these are so good. Incognito, that's pretty No What? I am I am. Ask Mima and Peapaw about this.
I'm not gonna say any of that because I understand it's a hard hustle. Tip or toe. It was currently in my refrigerator overnight, according to me. So this was an opportunity to like like uh affirmatively work Which is just it's like Time. You know, and perhaps a a a very different way of saying it is like being a big fish in a small pond, maybe. And I I don't even need to know how it turned out because I know how it turned out. Like I don't know how long time is. Alex, are you aware of a uh of a law called HIPAA? I think your Lordling was around for that, yes. He loves weddings, funerals. But please just listen to what you just said. That's exciting. Po well pu m possibly because I uh was d uh late and committed time theft and and Whatever.
No, no. Whatever that that show with Julia and uh downstream, yes. No, well you did say it was more of a criticism than a question. I I Product A. There are so many stories about evidence. Are you mad? Siva Siva. Yes, there you are. Oh, and they tell but they I think it might not be snarking white. I don't think it's a great or useful practice, but I'm always like, is this worth hustling for? What what's wrong with being I mean I'm not excited? I said, if you want to go ahead and just get those things and deliver them. I'm having fun with my bell. Yeah, it's uh you can tell. Like there's certain kinds of things. As it turns out. You know, I have a stand against Funko Pops, but I do have a Kramer Funko Pop here at the office.
And I think A B White brought a lot of that stuff, but a section I feel like there's a section he also brings But there's this pattern that tends to emerge where we we do obviously we'll never know whether this word becomes a big deal, but that word starts as two words. I do and I really, really genuinely want to know about the DoorDash guy. That is why I never surrender a match in Pokemon Go. I'm just I specifically chose him. And how do I do that? If they don't have it refunded, if they don't have it refunded. Um, the idea of manage your time. You come back from vacation or whatever and you go like oh like Say that again. That was that was what Jenna Morone calls a backdoor brag. Uh this is Duke by Friday, and I uh the thing is I like the stuff Hi everybody.
It's like the toilet. Um, and could you please read the headline from this article in the Washington Post? I am going to be trying both DoorDash and Instacart, so I want to know about the good, uh, good the good Door guy. Um like at the end of an inning inning. And why do you run on third third strike? Is that what I'm I think we're talking about a Nation of Talkers? So uh you know, that's why I set up Skype. Yeah. Like I'll pay the fee, but I need to cancel this ride and I can't do it. Yes. You are busy because you chose poorly at some point. Well, you're not producing the draft. We'll we'll wrap it up soon. Do I do that because other fake reasons I make up to lead you into my trap? I don't want to do it for a job, but I'm really grateful.
I've I get more joy out of making you mad than I want my kids' school to get money. I mean, this is how a lot of um not portmanteaus, but you think could think of like eventually becomes boxcar Yeah, to create a new word. Yes. Did you ever get that one? This all just started this all started as what was gonna be a five second or like one minute anecdote and now I've really oversold it. If they said a replacement, they don't have that replacement. Are you with me so far? You think I should cancel the order. I did it. Yes. Yes. Now I'm like, whoa, that's good. Oh I have this I have a bag for that. You might remember uh you might be too young for the OC, but um This is very this is all of these lists are weird.
But just so y'all know, we're gonna hear a mention of capitalization in the next three minutes. That's what I'm talking about. I'm I'm I'm jokes have left the room. He opened the door. Well yeah, I you understand also you you I hope you're appreciating the fact I'm completely ignoring I go out I I I look out the window and I can see what looks like somebody who's not from the neighborhood sitting in a parking space vaping while they look at their phone. Well, I mean it feels counterintuitive in the sense of like, well, first of all, stop giving me advice. I'm uh doesn't matter. Are you mad at all? I got I know why. Um I I f I continue to explore and purchase It's mm mm mm. Because basically you're pre-drilling some holes and just letting any hook that falls off the shelf land in it, I think.
It was revealed today that Mr. My name's Casey and I've been abused by John Syracuse. Yeah, yeah. Spoodle sounds pretty name for a girl. I like to know where the bathrooms are when I arrive, in case I have to have a case. So tell me what sort of hustle this door th this dasher had. But like she when she uses jargon, sometimes I don't know what the jargon means, but I never for a second. Well yeah, and then and then they can be the the good guys I'll go on with my day. It it it drains it of all meaning and then just makes it dumb. And I was like, okay, I I totally get that. Because COVID, you go like, oh, well, I know that must have been before 2020. MX MX Sisyphus. Um, Ezra Klein, who I think I'm becoming a fan of, which, mmm, I don't know how I feel about that.
But you know, like I I I I don't have any way of knowing that. What is happening right now? It came with the portrait. Just real quick, are you okay? It is. Do you like Claude Claude Debussy? Who said it? But um that one was a tour de force. Well, okay. Oh yeah, absolutely absolutely. I was uh using hourly to plug in Like people agreed to it, buddy. It's a myth. I didn't know that. I wish there were a way that I could say not simply, hey, please don't feel like you need to entertain me, but like I'm gonna put on headphones It's absolutely just buck wild. So basically I had ordered, because you know you can order stuff from like, and I do, like when I bought my nail gun. I did all of that. The things that have changed at work, like you notice but you don't you know what I mean?
Why in the hell would I feel excited about doing it? There's less there's less There is very little difference Think about a writing project, time and attention. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. I am. Just a finger and an empty neosporin. Um the that that's that sound that sounds like hate But then the drive back feels shorter. There's vallejo and there's six foul flags. The way I used to phrase it when I had to do talks and try to sound clever. But like and when I when I I posted it last night I thought this is such a flux, but I was like, I hope some of my friends think it's funny that I think I said something like We're unintentionally talking over each other right now. I was trying to say we're I forget what the challenge was, but it was probably a month ago.
Casey, my friend, Casey, uh, Casey Liss, you're your enemy, my friend. Now what I did not know because I don't read the trades. Yes, both t T ball and softball. Oh, you know what also if I could also say it's also, you know, remember our discussion about proper? And especially if it's night and it's gross out. Also, Alex, being who you are, like it sounds like you can't walk to walk into any retail establishment in most of the Midwest without somebody. Well, and and sometimes uh like the only thing These are all things that are in your life. But like that animals don't have that, aren't don't need or didn't evolve to have that same I do wonder at what point USB mics are going to be preferable to XLR mics.
Did your grand did your gr did your granddaughter set that up for you? Okay, okay. I'm gonna allow the hook for this one. Oh gosh, to give the example of uh name meshing or on the uh tippy to lemon tree. Oh yeah, like for example but the name meshing and name blending where you get to things like uh, you know, Benefer Oh my god, no. No, no, see I can't di mmm mmm If you want a the pronunciation cue if it helps you just imagine the the That's when I have to urinate when I'm hungry, because that's definitely a word. No, no, I wanted I wanted to hear that. You said something about surrendering PvP. I'm disappointed in you, Phil. I know how to do all those things. It's I like that. Oh you're talking about the bank, the uh the the uh b big big boy uh effective alt All of those different kinds of things.
Oh, that's good. You got so focused on managing your time well that you didn't notice that you were paying attention to the wrong thing. See also gift guides. No no no, you're thinking of the the English cartoon character Hippa Hig. It is. Blurple. I wish I didn't need it. You're not gonna give him the dignity of the quote. It was really is it is it still up? When I read that book, I'm like, isn't or aren't these crimes? There's no qu there's no question about it. It's done. It sounded so fucking smart. Do it fairly in the absence of that. You got one up on me. And that comes with pretty cool software. That's pretty cool. We did that. Well I use my training. I kind of chest nutted this challenge because instead I spent like the whole week reading about uh quantum mechanics.
You have a weird brain too. And sure, some of that could be the disruption of ritual and cycles and all the kinds of stuff that normally are markers for that kind of thing. Or as I like to say, increasingly these days, the wisdom document era, Merlin. In real life, you'd be doing what I'm doing. No, in a good way, not try hard. I feel like that's one of those like you know, there's occasions where industry terms kind of leak into the mainstream. John Syracuse, you're banned from listening to this episode. These are great. I'm very triggered by the New York Times very, very thoughtful and comprehensive and original thing. That's what I don't shit mad. And unlike a lot of bullshit in sports and coaching, that had a that had a meaning.
Okay, hold on. Mm-hmm. Who said it in what context? One was the hero item and the two the other two were the strap bones. But you I know capitalism. Um the So uh he uh talked Love a lemon Snapple. But um that's been really big and I I I do You don't know what two minutes let's go back to the T three minutes Other than you play in the space but d do not keep That that that's fine. But you'd make that a Patreon benefit. Certain industries I do Oh my god, we're talking over each other. Uh no, there's a bunch of here's animal hybrids, a comma, which is a camel and a llama. Oh, thank you. Two more quick examples that are directly from Little League. I really want to know. I'm not like deeply confused.
But like again to to bring back the the two two best things I learned, one of the two best things I learned from Stephen Covey. Could not tell you seven minutes. I don't know what say, for example, an hour, fifty-two minutes, and twenty-six seconds is. Stop stop stop stop Well, okay, I know why. Okay, I like that. There's a you push a pop. He loves weddings. They're yeah I mean they're the um they're the gender criticism. No, like your your definition of of hustle. And then when I do, you know, who cares? I I I canceled it and removed it from the source. I did everything. You wanted to do this because you were already using an app. It's a uh I would I would I would love to hear that. Yes. You don't know what three minutes is.
No, I I'm I'm doing the annoying thing where I just be quiet and see if your brain goes in different places because you've got that little bit of exactly So you've aware of a law called HIPAA? And I'm always like, oh, you're really counting on software to do a lot of heavy lifting to not make this chaotic. Like the portrait is a Funko Pop? Maybe that might be a Midwestern thing, but I don't know. So so the hungry part of hangry is you know, what we're learning from this article about science is that this made up word that's not a thing, hangry. I'm not talking about capitalism. Oh. I mean, as Brooks pointed out in the Mythical Man month, it takes nine months to make a baby no matter how many women you put on the job.
You have added some things to notes that I'm a little bit curious about. Backstory. You run from outfield, which of course, obviously I was always in the outfield. There's a phrase we used to use. He's like, No, you have to cancel it. Like that seemed so you know, it seems like it was so much less than that. This is a very Merlin Mann cogsi thing, but like why is it that you will agree, let's say somebody s wants a day of your time, like That like you've developed cues and and even if they're not a lot of cues, waypoints if you like, that give you a c but w how is it that the going the one time Time and attention are related because if you don't spend your if if you don't manage your time well, it's gonna be different difficult to know if you're paying attention to the right things.
I enjoy it a lot. In fact, I would say give yourself a task to do something different. This is Do By Friday, a weekly challenge podcast with Alex Cox and Merlin Mann. I had Zoom optimized for talking to my shrink. What are you doing? One of the things we we might talk about this week is uh is a concept that's become important to me over the last fifteen years, which is You know what I haven't done is I haven't checked checked D script to see if Tippitoe and Lemon Tree are actually You do a big thump to make sure that the umpire can hear that your foot hit first. Anyways. You can't fix an order. Because I think the challenge was my idea. Yeah, time. 'Cause it's just a hallway and a guy running, or more guys running, but it's just a hallway.
Okay. We've she's got a good camera, she's got good but still But go ahead. Like we'll add this other person to the bill and that'll bring in it's kinda like a sp again start talking about the monkeys. You know what? Wonderful has been has has been paid. I'm gonna need your help uh working on a I'll say can I say that again? Mm-hmm. Well, but okay. How do y'all make snickerdoodle pie? He got the stuff out. Like of the flow states, all of that bullshit. No, this whole uh the Thank you for your time. If we end up talking about that, I think that's valuable. I uh Yeah, that goes that goes on the list of like yeah, we we are surprised you didn't know that earlier, right? Alex Adorgi. Except for Alexander Petra.
Like even if you did But even if that person is out, you run it out. Um it's cool. It'll probably arrive. You know what I mean? Did you know that? Yes, I'm just on a shitty website. It's terrible. Even if it didn't matter that you were there on time, it does matter because that's who you are. Like no that's no you you say you played T ball. That's why sports builds carefully I think that that kid might have learned that Babity boob babity bobbity boob. It's a tough racket, as you're about to discover. But also, Alex Alex you forget to edit our podcast. I could do it as a sport. And I can tell the guy's kind of pissed off about it. Like when's the last time we hung out with this couple that we like?
That's like You know, why do these why do these homosexuals keep trying to suck my car? Keep going, keep going, keep going. And like I imagine most, if not all I just couldn't say it. Portman was like hmm I am both hungry and and I'm not gonna look it up but I wonder if Portmanteau is uh I love I told my kid there's a lot of shit you'll get away with in life by a combination of Uh No, that's the thing. Do you want to cancel the order? And then get ready to do it a lot. Actually it turns out attention is too. Good great great metaphor, right? It's literally just a hallway. Go ahead, please. He wanted to combine Christmas and Hanukkah and so Christmas Coat was a thing for a while. What that mean?
Yeah. Yes. You're gonna run this one. Busyness, the state of being busy. Um time is the resource. No? It's talking about w what they now call it plush, what we used to call a stuffed animal. I'm gonna break my rule and look it up. That is a guy that is one of my favorite I I wanna as a future dasher, I want to know what the what this guy did to And I guess I wonder if they're maybe trained to go like, hey, listen, if they say refund. That's something I should run with. m. I oh I hate the word thesis. Time it's a thing. Oh, oh. Ah, the uh MV7, that that uh that one mic, the sure mic He loves funerals. Oh Debut C no fuck what Right? Like always do the thing that could benefit you. And I'm guessing they deal with a lot of people who are a huge pain in the ass.
Right? And already I'm getting the sweats because I I know what it's like to try and deal with. Or so but if you had a good time on vacation, which I don't, you come back and you go, um There are two different ineffable periods of time, both of which are wrong. And I'm part of that's getting old, but I do think COVID had an effect on it. So what does that mean? Like when you have attention issues, you gotta be careful what gets the hook in. No, I hope I well, I think Did you have an actual emotional did you just have an actual emotional reaction to what I just said? Blurple. Sorry. This is how we cross the street because this is who we are. And that doesn't mean that people I just I always I for some reason I I don't know why, but I always not assumed but guessed.
But um if my kid liked me, you know, he'd be my favorite. Anywhere in between. Like you where you go like, oh god, is this your I'm texting you because I want to hear what Paint, paint, paint Is um Because don't take the time to wonder whether the catcher might have dropped the ball. I d I never surrender PvP matches in Pokemon Go, even if it looks like I am going to lose because often Okay But like that kid who's being forced to play uh uh baseball I have a feeling. It should that that seems like it should be the case. Like I don't want LaCroix seltzer. I wish I could self-identify as what I really wanna do is spend the evening with my family. If they have the replacements, get the replacements.
Oh, good luck. I did I tell you this. Sometimes it'll say like, oh, you have to order at least three items or whatever. Well thanks. Do you ever have a thing where you go like that seems both like If you don't manage your time But if you're producing a draft that sucks, you haven't been paying attention to the right things. Um, but like they didn't really like, you know. And since I'm not an editor and nobody lets me use the the version that I think sounds good. We did, we did. No, I I tried to safe words nasty boy. Uh you know, be careful about jargon. I don't know when this got introduced to Strunken White because the you know it started out as, you know, strunk. Okay. When you spatchcock a chicken, that's from dispatch and cock.
Gollywog from Golly and Pollywog. Point is though, if the catch But it does. I'm probably But but I just ran it out. The sort of uh quote h hustle that wa and the idea of that. It's also about me. So just remember it doesn't matter. I use the training that I've received from years of using Instacart, which is like But I can only assume that even though I'm doing the best I can to use the training I've gotten from Instacart They only had like two of these items. Please feel free to cancel the order. Like, hey, school's closed. If when I try it, one thing I I am doing and will continue to do is tease out what are the big patterns. Um oh no th that is the wrong that is the wrong title And uh this Like let's say we're driving to Auntie Susie's house, and let's like depending on where A little echoey.
You remembered all that. Oh yeah, and the Pokemons. Um okay well uh portmanteau multiple words are combined into a new word. I am agreeing that the verb of hustle Haw Ladi It's one of the great movies. Oh my god. I want to be so easy. The reason I want this service See we we I wish there were a way for me to find food. And what it involves is grabbing three tea bags, putting some boiling water in, and then letting it steep for three to four minutes That'll keep you honest. Ironically enough, it's gonna make a lot of people go, uh Is this one of those pop things you buy? Yeah. Well, there sure are a lot of these. No, no. Yeah. What you choose to have hop hustle about is your own concern. That is a man who would say that he values hustle.
Yes. No, I'm going to deliver f well that's Yeah. Okay, problem there. Anyone that puts humanity into things like this And like the person will go deliver it and it's like that's pretty straightforward and easy for them. Like, because you know, they don't want to dissatisfy people. Challenge Um But even if you take out a lot of those factors like, well, I'm busy tomorrow, it there's still um I'm I wouldn't agree to doing that tomorrow. No. You uh cause whether it's accurate or it's not accurate, there's still plenty of ways it can get in the way. It's gonna be super arbitrary. No, I just think that you are genuinely it's a joke a joke leaving I I am just kicking them out of the room. I uh thought and Is this the show?
You'll crush someone's, you know. This is good. Yes. It's a good magazine. And I'm about to disagree. So fourth time I'm gonna ask you to please say that sentence. Anything worth doing is worth doing. It's because of what Um, there are ways in which I've I've made that a whole study of my life. It is a way of uh sort of surrendering some more intellectual agency. That's why I like being guesting on podcasts where I get to talk about this. I would I think I would be this is we like to talk about media on this show. Mocktail Nespresso. Yeah, no, I was a fucking tryhard. But like I I can't change that system out. There's no way to fix it. up above ground, but in their little like deprivation chamber.
It like completely depends on the the person. And then I remember this morning thinking, oh, this is getting real. And have you have you spent any time deciding if that's the stairs you even want to climb? But to really have this work, go and disappear into s honestly disappear mostly into doing a task for the amount of time that you have chosen. But if you're wondering about how good your estimations and your time management are in general, Oh, stock, maybe? It also feels like those are like should be different times, but that was like that's what 1966 or 67 was. Well I know, but uh Well where you can put your suits in? Is that a word? We might as well do but like uh that's anyway. I d you're you're you're showing you're showing character even when it doesn't matter, but you did it so much that you And uh s It was um so the the sorry, the prequel to the anecdote.
He handed it to me. But if it doesn't arrive, hit us back in a couple days and we'll deal with it then Yes. Um we'll never do it in the after show. And yet that that's me. I there's part of me that's like because of like what I nominally do for a living, that I'm still like you wait, so I I I d I d Is that what we're talking about here?
