I'm talking about real things. But I'm like, do you know about skimmers, honey? Uh things we can't say on the main episode where we bitch about delivery services. But it was so memorable to me. They don't have 24 packs, but I could get the same thing with two 12 packs. Whereas I, to contrast, go way out of my way to never think or talk about money. But uh what are ads other than a way to facilitate getting uh paid for your your work? He looks kind of like a cartoon character. You should pick your Medicare plan, get your new catheters, like all that stuff, just like I understand there's targeting to that, but like the problem is the cumulative, the gestalt of that. And if that's for worse for 99.

And it's like cause you've got to scream over the haircuts in the shopping on the radio to get people to listen. Like the way yeah, the way that we edit the show would be like uh Quinn and I get it um t uh try to get the first edit up but um by midnight and then show notes by uh Thursday morning. That has to be a good thing. I used to mostly not put things in the Patreon show notes, but increasingly I feel like there's a lot of good photographs. And I'll go, huh? And then I think I just it's almost like a trigger at that point. Uh but I love but but for the Spotify for what I use it for is like a stellar. I just need you to answer whether you've seen White Lotus. You get out of breath and then you shoot a rifle.

Uh really helps new people discover the pod. You could have killed three of these episodes so easily. Yeah, you need capitalism. Whoever's the guy who's the guy that did Doctor Who and then Sherlock? I promise I will never be mad. Uh what I'd done was I s w no mat so like what happens is sometimes and I I have theories about what causes this, but sometimes apropos of nothing I can see of which parts of it you're supposed to black out and not black out and I'm all soup Nazi about it. Uh shall I tell you now or do you want to see it for the after show? So Guardian is nominally theoretically as as a VPN, amongst other things, it's it's concealing my location. Because this planned up to there's people's jobs to keep it.

uh money. You know a word that ironically enough, a word that Felix uses a lot on uh the other Felix, Felix on Slate Money. You could buy banner ads in this one section. the South by Southwest talk in some ways. if you're hungry and and like didn't have a lot of dough, but like Godfather's Pizza had this like afternoon buffet special. Tippy-toe? So when it comes out on Friday afternoon and I didn't hear anything in between, it makes me nervous. I'm saying that's why we need to have the conversation is I need to readjust. Well right now it's a big thing. it probably an old fashioned term. Yeah, yeah. or iBooks, whatever it's called this week, you know, the Books app. That's when you saw when you saw one set of brain prints, that's when I was thinking you.

Was it was it my own? Cul Culpepper really gotta dig into it at this point. No bad on me. Fleischman is in trouble, which is Fleischmann is in trouble. Yeah. So she's a lot of people. Glenn Howerton loves saying that on the Sunny podcast. journal. Uh the watch has been great lately. Like I came, I finished right there. One of the great things. I'm and like you are. I learned that from War being fired from Gimlet. Um wait, like locking your account as in like perma banning? That's so boring. No, I it it's close the faucet a little bit. But when I had my own. Please call and verify your last transaction and kind of stuff and whatever. for more than one visit and the only way there is no password they do like like the the kakamimi relay thing where like you've got to go and like you've got to go to your email and click a link to visit the site Please capture that.

Right. Because you don't want the thing to happen. I'm supposed to zap out my birth date. We get Instacart that that deli to delivers the things. I was there, Jack, feeding you. Larry goes, I don't like this. And Roman man's um means and thank you, Mass Man. You know, like that. But I said under that, because I'd already put it in notes because I'd been meaning to listen to it, and I said, Alex Colon, highly recommended, because you love, not that you love money, but you think a lot about money. J Marty, Jeff, and who was the other person? And it was it was to say like and she says like oh great like learning that Toby like she wanted Toby to like be excited about Slate CEO, I don't know who that is at at that point, but I've I uh Oh it's Wilhelmina Slate.

Mm-hmm. Oof, oof, oof. Yep. It it seems like nobody cares. if you're not a sleep member. And this is this is uh in the same way that I hate the word content or content creator or or creative, creatives making content, like it's the same thing where it's like that is code. from watching the first episode, but I am watching I can watch the first episode a little differently now because I thought the money stuff and status stuff was mostly table setting. For sex things. But why uh you you seem overly hostile to a certain type of ad that it has become unavoidable. Like uh um defector because y you know, they're not the ones that are. Just stop treating me like an asshole, you know? for people to publicly talk about money in the same way at le uh the the ATP guy I guess I'm now the ATP stalker.

Yeah. Like I know that's not a book that everybody loves anymore. And like do you remember Postman Dan? it off. Who is the captain of the I Love podcast ship? n I mean I guess they do reads on that show, but somebody like a Glenn Howerton, no more than say a John Roderick. But like we c care fuck tons about this content that's being made. uh like uh ideally like you know somebody who can pull that all together right the part where that starts falling apart is where you get that little whiff of like is this is this milk bad you get a whiff of like wait a minute so That guy works so goddamn hard on that show. He obviously he works so hard and he cares so much. You know, or Taffy talking about like all the different articles pieces at the same fucking magazine.

Like um like Elizabeth said. The content of your programs, like what you make, what you write, Acer, make and do, like the stuff that you make. some kind of a discount because you didn't care where they ran and you were fine with it backfilling where there wasn't a premium ad. camera pop up or whatever. Mm-hmm. You're frequently you find yourself, oh my god, we have way too much work to do. uh that's not a place that's ever going to make a lot of of m money. You. If I could say, I will just whip out a little bit for a second, just enough to beat you, is like I'm so pleased to be able to pick who's allowed to like myself. Are you getting the right people? It's a great little business. Because I think people care like the original host of the show, they bounced years ago.

Like I I'll never forget that was one of my first fresh air interviews and it stuck with me forever. But like, okay, it can't be the same show today. I didn't notice that we had that l like one sixth of our show was ads or one fifth of our show was ads. Hulu or now Netflix. Like those again, those m terrible Medicare ads where there's one Medicare ad, Medicare Advantage, where I swear to God it's the same ad, like fifteen second ad that just runs twice and it always runs twice. And it's like they didn't make a longer ad. Oh, uh has that not been clear? And it was it was so disgusting I had to just close it. Look at all the rotating art. s like not a safe word, but an unsafe word for besides just saying notes, notes, notes.

Yeah, but I mean like b come to Dubai, sweetie, kind of guy. That like a Quinn and I would edit to the show together and get it to depending Thursday night or Friday morning, depending on what uh our various doctors' appointments. What what do you Oh six to eight times out of ten, it was good to go when I woke up Pacific time on Thursday morning. that uh Merlin w would not think about the show until Friday morning. A doctor's appointment isn't an excuse for something. that like this is the last show of the week and I am the last thing that you have to deal with until a a So like I'm I'm ready to start winding down and focusing on stuff that's not the public-facing parts of my life. Believe it or not, there's other shit I have to deal with.

I have half a hovel to deal with. Oh my god. There are things like there is an artist called various artists, which is kind of funny, and that'll show up sometimes. And I'll think, oh, that sounds like one of those songs with lots of people on it, or you know, and that's not even getting into like the the the backroom toilet bowl remix of New Order Ceremony by Lil Panties. Yeah, they have that Kath Carroll album and he'll go like okay well this is one this is a playlist called uh you know makeout club and it's like amazing indie rock songs I don't wanna have to rip every book and put in overcast. Whatever, who fucking cares? And I have an apparatus that supports it really in a w it's it's so embarrass it's not embarrassing.

Thread elegantly. But my wife has just pointed out to me that Greg from White Lotus is totally the stepdad in Napoleon Dynamite. vote for Pedro's or that's how much I think that guy that guy is in white looks he's he's Tanya's I'm sending this photo go make yourself a quesadilla He's up on the cross and talking about physics for five hours. I love good. But um but uh no I was trying to remember what when we got really into it. I would probably watch sports if steroids were a thing. We have not tapped into steroids. Oh I can't find my rifle on the city. Okay, second question. Is it? I will not hear a word against Solly. I love when she does the narration of what Toby's thinking. You know what?

Yeah, like like in the case of Andor, created by Tony Gilroy. Sometimes they couldn't even afford Yeah. Or it could be a flux, you know. you know how the room was like written by Tommy produ uh produced by Tommy Bousseau. that White Lotus is very much m uh uh like Mike's baby, y you know? Like that each story is part of a story. v unless I watched some kind of fucking YouTube video about previously on Game of Thrones. But like no matter how big an Ann Haish fan you are, you're still kinda like, was he remade psycho? Yeah, well, it's special, but they could have made them all special. But like do you remember the way how that kinda pioneered to me anyway, like a new way of dynamically showing what somebody's doing on a screen without it just just pointing at the screen like it's an anime or something like that?

And so at sea about his life right now, like he's found something that he's excited about. this flipping through an app and like you see it. Tinder, Bumble, like you you ask like what you're looking for. Cod, who used that who had that phrase? And like it you could get that sense though of like how excited he is in his day to day, like he's distracted by how excited he is. When the little lord goes to take a shower, like that's our chance to go jump into White Lotus or watch, oh my god, watch fucking Triangle of Sadness the second uh time. So Oh, nice. I brick with thee, I brick with thee, I brick with thee. You hold up the covenant, yes? And then we watched it together and he turned to me, it paused at mid-episode, and I didn't really know like cause it's not necessarily a laugh out loud show and turn to me.

and playing with earrings like all ladies in New York do. This week's challenge, watch Fleischman is in trouble. Ooh, what's the deal with grocery carts? on a given Wednesday morning. Instacart has this way of like kind of weirdly arbitrarily locking accounts for really random reasons, even though they know you very, very well. But they have well no, okay, but like, you know, if something happens and they always I'm always like, what what okay, so so okay, God Right. It goes, your order didn't go through, which of course makes me immediately feel poor. Um, you gotta retrieve your password. bank about your A ATM card or whatever. My wife will put my wife will put her card in fucking anything. There's no password.

you know, customer grooming to uh to to be approved. Things we need like right this second. Uh no for well i I wish I was a robot, but no. But it's me who gets the sneeze from the poop dusties. And the shopper can go, well, if they're out of twenty-four packs, I can still put this together. I know it's got a pound sign, it's got an Octathorp, it's got a hashtag, but four is a size, not a quantity. Yeah. I know you'll win the fight, but I think Judaic energy. uh how goops haters made gwyneth palchros company worth 250 million dollars and her thesis according to the slate money podcast which by the way you guys I know you've got a podcast at a company if you have a really good guest was it the liver, right?

But and like that stuff is sticky and I'll you know read about that all day. And like it's a fascinating person and everybody likes the person and like even Elizabeth seems to like the person and Elizabeth doesn't seem to like very much. was tasked with recording like eighteen ads that day. And I don't know what's causing it. Essentially the teaser. You get like the teaser for the episode. And to have like six minutes of ads for that just seems it seems like almost like a fuck you. creating content or monetizing, I think, is that the the remember that thing I said about like do you use a new word if it seems to be moving it towards something better and more humane? That's why I really now remind myself that a job and your work don't need to be the same thing.

Those are words that are taking us in a different direction. to feed the machine. slate um money I I guess panel with Taffy, she notes how important it is to talk about money because Yeah, that w man, all the media people are talking about how uh amazing all eight episodes are and I'm like, no, I may it is a show Fleischmann is in trouble, I think, is one of the few shows that does benefit from a week-by-week But be circumspect about whether you really want the answer. what you're trying to show with that observation? And he thinks he can talk about how everybody is stupid, and talk behind people's back about how they're stupid. He is a guy who makes podcasts, but he doesn't let's not a criticism.

in journalism, as in like the Great Wall of China, which is in as you know, right? Went to an Ivy League school, got a job at NPR, and then became a podcaster because that was the next step. Do you c I don't even want to get into do you care about podcasts as a medium because boy is that ever a that's a pretty basic thing for a person like me to expect people to have. Ditto there. Like a woman smiling and eating salad as you talk about how long it takes a plane to land at Heathrow. Why are you doing this? bright, right? n a different kind of wall, which is a sort of like industrial obliviousness to like in the same way that there's nobody who's a project manager for my health And that you've done something that's respectful to the content you've made.

When I run across advertising feels like the equivalent of run of network advertising. leaves me feeling gross, like I'm covered with a thin film of scus from this industry that doesn't love itself. Show of the the year and get back into that, but I I I really that's our clother show about like the culture and history of clothing. A n um whatever you want to call it and organization. here and what ads are on which shows and you know in relation to the host. And the boutique. versus like you know, bringing freelancers. I mean, you know, it's it's not gonna I mean if you if you're if you if you're gonna make stuff that catches on fire, you need to charge more. maybe professionally. And like so you know what I mean?

The stuff that you're producing conforms with your tacit promise with your audience or your friends. I I wanna be a writer and uh this is what's expected of me and I need to make m money and I don't want to freelance because I need my health insurance and that a a and and you can tell that there are hosts out there who are tr like Like, okay, I know that a shitty ad is coming, so we are somehow going to do a good break here so that someone can go take a shitty. keep podcasts good is having to work around the interests of people who do not like the the the people who hear that and they're like, Well, no, Merlin, I don't like podcasts. Yeah, let's we if you are talking. the people who are not there to like show off their I mentioned this on Back to Work yesterday, but I watched this t part of this terrible YouTube video about not terrible but like frustrating to me about the most expensive house in America.

I uh the I was talking to Maddie earlier this week, and I'm like, what I am most afraid of and what I am becoming without knowing it. Can you imagine ten times the um the amount of this? And uh I think it's you know what it has become a neologosm in in my house and it's Who started it? Pro oh problem most of yeah. And then uh more than a handful of times you've had everything except because your internet everything except uploading the media completely done by the time I wake up. Alex do it. And then the the uh and oh yeah, and then the next week I w like I I made just the assumption clearly communicated to me, which I did not even like. But Thursday is my Thursday, being the day where I do most of my chore things, but Thursday is also kind of my Friday, which makes Wednesday my kind of like, you know, like in college communities, Thursday is kind of a pre-Friday.

Paying for rent, oh dear lord. Give us your fucking money dot com, which is a Patreon page that uh more we used Like somebody entered this in a field as the name of the artist instead of the pull-down menu that said it's a it's a compilation or whatever, right? I used to write this down. sometimes even more obscure than my fairly obscure taste. And that's where I drag all the stuff like release radar, because like, yes, I know I can go and search for it, but should I need to do that? I I like music too. It as much as I like books, I would love to not use the Audible app. it as for reasons anyone could understand. like your bespoke favorite way of formatting a PDF. Or you can, because it already lives in iCloud, all I have to do is open any of my books in files, and they open right up in Marvin.

Oh no no no I meant uh that was my first season. The uh Tanya's husband Greg who had to go back to Denver. I love that guy. heroes versus villains. sports more fun. Come on down to the puzzle in water. see that his steroids are wearing off, it's very upsetting to me. Um pod, podcast? Kids with money only. program to watch the first episode of the Hulu Limited series. Well, uh the difference between not not just a s a script and a magazine, but uh s uh feature versus a novel and then the novel changes. I uh it's probably one of my favorite novels, you know it, of my whole whole life. recommend the audiobook over the uh i if you're into audiobooks this is an audio is it read by Lizzie Calvin So they have uh there's not going to be a second season.

How uh a as she says, if you want to be a writer now, now you need to adapt your novel needs to be adapted into a show. She got jealous of her friends and other uh uh authors and showrunners talking about making uh sh shows, so she thought Put my name, adapted by uh Taffy Brother Kerry. with the script on pulp fiction, but understandably he really wanted the, as they described in this video, the revered directed and written by. Well they're both in emotion. Like I I might have talked about it before. We do not have to say anything useful or critical or anything. of TV, which is it feels like a novel. Not just mystery box shows or not even just Prestige TV, but just this idea that like, oh, I've just gotta fucking churn through all the episodes.

And it's Star Wars. Don't think about it. Yes, it's an affliction and my family won't watch it on my apparatus. type. Sometimes that's reflected in the person's face. is ubiquitous communication and maps. I'm not going to say Stephen Moffin invented this, but Stephen Moff was the first person I ever saw make people texting each other really work on screen. Mm-hmm. study in Scarlet, whatever the woman's disappeared. Who's like commenting on Lestrand's press conference as he's giving it? Well, and not just like visually, but to convey the emotion that you have when you find out that someone you love has something terrible has happened to them. Like you or you need to see the joy of let's say seeing a bunch of people on the show.

This this American Horniness title needs to stop. Women he doesn't know want to talk to him and the way that's portrayed without just just showing his phone. Felt people just refer to them. But like I am utterly unfamiliar. Oh I don't I don't really daughter is what's her name? Jesse Ismerg all all the way. It's the first time in his l life, like how Don Jr. like this. Uh the i is your lady friend gonna gonna watch the the rest of the thing. Hello. But it is definitely a journey for me. Right. Oh yes. Defector, you need to fucking fix that shit. It was, but it that's not the point. Right? And then there's me with same thing. coffee dripper and th they're in sizes. You know, the the manner to which she hopes to become accustomed, she's gonna get, she needs these number four coffee filters.

Uh only two things. Big fan, big fan. like collaborate on the tip that we all agree to. Yeah. knew that we were going to record it and um or rather we knew that our challenge this week's challenge would be to watch Fleischmann in his is in trouble. That is so good. And uh we'll get to it when we talk about the challenge, which I'm wondering if we should just talk about the challenge because we're we're both We're already kind of talking about the challenge. Mm-hmm. a profile of hers about a celebrity without a few. Forty minutes was not enough time for that podcast episode in my opinion. Which uh sometimes I listen even I I have to pay for this late I don't have to, but I pay for this late podcast because most of them are good and because their ads are just so fucking bad.

Sad because I think I think when I turn off Guardian, I get different ads, I'm pretty sure. Stanford's extended law school program makes it available for you to get your master's degree in pseudo-law by It sounds like the person uh like it doesn't sound professionally recorded sometimes. Local businesses often use Fiverr to hire a voice artist. certain ads. Those ads weren't curated by people who care about their audience. You know, try. You know? You know, it's so it's such a like a yeah, usually. God, there are shows now where I'm like, is anybody keeping track? And then, you know, even with uh you know, with uh uh, you know, uh Lizzie and Mary, you get like, oh, you know, we'll more after the break.

But you are talking about m money. for um most shows if people want to work in a podcast in the same way that because they are repeatedly not pulling off the thing they are absolutely certain they're pulling off. the the ability to act like everybody else is stupid and they're not. Right? But like, you know, I not to just single out Avery Truffelman, but like other people that come to mind, uh Chris Melanfi from Slate Hip Parade, like 'Cause I barely notice it and I tend to look pretty carefully at those things. Like, no, it's not evil, but it very much could be wicked. not loving, caring about and having an attachment to podcasts like I do, although I do harbor that feeling privately. Is there anybody who is somebody that loves podcasts as me running that network and making sure that the pieces make sense together?

I remember initially feeling like everybody like, oh man, another one. And and then he I mean he he gave um articles of interest to Avery Truffelman, which is probably my favorite. the first like pretty books about web design as a business and like at pra practitioner stuff, but they were great books. that you're you had this graph showing like demand for your services and ability to do the work and like those graphs, those lines rarely sync up. One of the things there was this really memorable graph he published in that book about the the challenge of being a boutique, which is you know, whipping my dick out from a privilege standpoint, which is like it's really callo and unfair for me to go.

pretty pretty much control over what I do, what I make, how I do it, who I work with, all that kind of stuff. You're new to the scene. Like anything where you just fucking add a zero to anything. I mean, think about how we got pizza two nights ago from a local place. Right? And um and it was they they they then moved to a buffet model. But you've got to make that scratch, man. Let's put it this way. Mm-hmm. I'm not gonna go. But I would never want to sacrifice the interests of the people I do want to service by losing touch with the stuff that I care about and I hope they care about. Fine. have been either like uh see, I haven't thought that I've been late with the edits, but then I don't know.

When you let people down because I uh have been letting people who never talk about money are people who have an egregiously long. Okay, this is from um this is called Touring the Most Expensive House in the United States. Uh bleek, bleak, bleak. is what like is what people have said about me when they've wanted to make me think that I'm going crazy and wanting to to make me feel b bad. there would be a cut like around the time I was getting ready to go to bed on Wednesday night, just for what it's worth. Yes. T-bone. The short was more a canary in the coal mine, uh though, of like, oh something that shouldn't like yes, that But doesn't Lil Panties sound like a SoundCloud rap rapper that would appear after the word featuring?

It's like it's like using settings on Ventura. algorithmic stuff that's a little bit more than a lot of things. Are never going to be a problem, f really, not in the way that say like Napster or Limewire was. v vague dick about caliber. Mm-hmm. Uh no. No, no, no. Yeah. No, and I didn't I but I started listening to uh one of speaking of fresh air, w uh one of the like uh so many things that Max brought to me that ended up being great, I was like I'm not gonna watch a fucking reality show. that they continue to lean into. prom you know, m uh uh unlike most like literary erry a racket interviews, they actually talk about like the old work in context with the new stuff. So Taffy comes on. Oh God, she's so good.

Okay, now I know okay, I'm not gonna say that I know why Syracuse gets frustrated with me, but sometimes when I'm asking you a question, it's not it's just I'm asking you a question. Yes, yes. I would be so amazing. She's 11. Um, you know what? And you know what I mean? used to hire her older friends to just do like tiny bit. This was a thing made by many people, but it was conceived uh of by one person. But I've heard it said, I think by Andy, that they got Mike White for this project because I guess he's famous for writing really fast. And Mike White was the guy they wanted to get because he can write really fast and make it something that could be shot during COVID. It it's weird to compare it to School of Rock, but that is the only other thing I've seen by him that it's like, how did this get made?

Ned. From the first four episodes, this is w something that I love about a season or a series. feel like its own contained thing. But each episode is its own contained thing while being part of a series the same way there are like parts of a book. Oh, who's who's our dude? And over everybody's phone pops up, I think it's the word lie. vividly remember like my my summer of Law and Order SVU thinking there needs to be a way to show people communicate now. is period appropriate to 2016. Well y uh yes, but but I what I also love about their show that I forgot to mention is that it's This is how people felt about apps in twenty sixteen because it they make a gr great they make a great take great pains to be uh like Hillary, oh uh like at least There are MacBook Airs that is still have a light up back.

thinks about and is aware how part uh how just integral everything we think about and do is often related to a device now for better or worse, especially if you're a doctor or or or a public. Color my crystal. Yes. Oh well. Yes, by the women, but I uh maybe I'm projecting here. We did an active decoupling or something or conscious decoupling. Going to put off our this do by Friday challenge. like trying to not be snooty about like prestige TV and well-rated things. It's sad and then it's sad and then it's sad and it is funny, but like it's like and you feel for everybody in it, like Lizzie Kaplan, like everybody. cats have uh the classic the classic I was about to say that the cats are picky about the litter they use.

And it it's really, really fun. Like it's it just seemed like it was really your shit. Like they're so weird and generic. get a hand in picking the ads. And I'm just gonna read exactly what you wrote me. fun and if you can't make it fun make it short which is what Marco does. It is such a relative thing. What what what's on the thing? comes around and starts polishing my skirt about how much fucking money and boats they've got and all this and all that kind of stuff and I'm like, ugh, my tolerance for that is so low. Um, I I would like to think of myself as somebody who's like pretty humane and respectful, and I try not to jump to bad conclusions about people. Right? Good faith people in charge of revenue, good faith people in charge of journalism and reporting, good faith people in charge of opinions, and then a kind of the omnibus like good faith of an editor.

And ethical that the pieces don't talk to each other. with how he directed his organization I think there is something you do get into a kind of catch twenty two of like well either you knew about this and you're wicked or you did know about this and you're a terrible manager and maybe not very much. Oh let me wrap this up. The lower quarter of the barrel was what were called run-of-network ads, which are just ads that would run anywhere on the site, and in particular, they might have been purchased at a Just, you know, I'm I'm so tired. a local business. like fish in it and fish tanks that come out. Oh, I have not seen this. even know that your brain is affecting other people. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome.

And it says it'll say something like Sloane featuring little panties. improbably and I don't I doubt this is deception because I always assume good faith but like uh Sloan is my sloan and you guys should know better than to put little panties in there. I I wonder man, it's it's God, I I I wonder if you're kind of like grandfathered in and you're not you're not seeing as much Uh what's the name of the band? And to some extent you were like Max was so obsessed with Survivor. She I could hang with Taffy. Yes. Oh boy. for the New York Times. Screenplay is like you typed up the words in final draft. And uh it also means because I still don't know what it means. I'm like, what? Oh I know this. Yeah, losing losing losing losing her for that long.

I was gonna say that oh used to bullseye with his uh T16, so close. Uh but uh but but like yeah, but you can sell it like it's neat because it's I don't know, like another uh you know, style dads. you know, not the style she wanted to be accustomed to apartment he lives in. And I like to watch different things. I love this. And I am just always ready for a thing that shows that my life is falling apart and I'm poor. for DoorDash delivery. Oh. I'm not trying to cast an aspersion. Oh that's cool. I'm so I really hope that you watch the rest of the the the series. Oh, cause you kept bringing extra stuff, right? And I was trying to say it sounded like you wanted to say you're going to the store more. Wow, this is this is a good idea. But also like, you know what I mean? Um sometimes I avoid it because they're talking about something I haven't seen yet, but there's I think the w the run of the watch lately has been very good.

Ned something. We don't need to go into this, but let's just take it as read that one of the challenges of producing content, perhaps the greatest challenge over previous generations. Yeah, yep, yep. But Andy Andy said, look, boy, Andy's had a lot of good insight lately about hard how hard it is to sell stuff, like as a writer or or a showrunner. When people say things like swipe right and swipe left, I have to mentally think about do you mean grabbing on the left and going to like everybody else like us from Insta Instacart? Like I I it just makes me sad that stuff I like gets shittier and shittier. Mm-hmm. The uh mm uh cocoa I like that girl. That seems like a guy on Spotify where he would say all of the sound loud rappers I've heard of.

You love to pimp the after sorry, you love to promote the after show that helps us have sustainable income. You know what I mean? That's what puts him in the class of like the David Brents and Michael Scotts and Jonah Ryan's of the world. And whether or not I'm getting all those details right, what I want to say is I just feel like an astonishing amount of advertising They just made an ad that uh maybe they did, but like it appears to be the identical ad.

They're the Sam Rothburgs of the world, which I you probably haven't gotten to that episode, but man, Sam Rothbard. Wait, wait. I can't. Anyway, I love you and I love your brain, and I I don't I never would want to. But it was on the season. Like you go back and you watch even like a super good movie like sneakers or you know hackers or whatever. And now she's disenchanted. Oh God, oh I uh um Matthew decoupled with me because he watched I Yeah, that amazing reunion episode where they called him on the carpet for calling Rodney's mother a whore and how horrible he was to all the women. Well I'm doing b I'm I'm doing I'm doing God's shouting. Some kind of special phrase. Because I'm sitting there, I'm sitting there with my dick in my hand for two days going like, uh, is Alex done anything?

But the guy who wrote the emo book. I uh like everything about this show. It's like an actual chapter from a book. That's fine. Jesus Christ, close the faucet. See? Hey, you know what? I fucking love that book. In one way or another, right? But like it's such a gift to be able to make the thing that you want to make and to be able to If it's annoying, I made it up. You mean like a radio show? People have to do a podcast to afford to be a journalist. But like he will always be the most A cooked up and B going through a divorce guy ever. And he's a he's a he's a grind and a tryhard. Well, the birth date is there as my DOB. But they're not treating you th that the people who are treating you like an asshole are not thinking about us.

Oh, what was the point of what we're saying? Yep, yep, yep. He piddled right now. Yes, hello. Oh god. That's what I that's the ad I want. Uh I have some notes along the way. Stephen Moffat. Yes. I I wish that the people who w worked on Apple Music and and Apple Books, in fact, liked Sometimes they couldn't even afford to pay them or the the this duty quote couldn't afford to pay them. What's his name? Whoever first came up with that phrase or that tweet, that whatever observation that it was the way it was phrased was so perfect.

Oh, excuse me. How did this start out? Then guess what? And like I need to like like go look at the exact distinction. How are you gonna print that paper? If you care a lot personally about the stuff that you produce and the people who are allowed to love it, like you learn who to over service. Oh man, it's a tinkering g Are you tinkering with your medicine season? Have I not been I mean I have not be been a good computer. You can read aloud if you want, or you can read it yourself. I don't go to a grocery store anymore. Well, I just want to be clear on the main episode. The 18% and then plus add more. Yes. Here's the thing, Alex. It's not like Bob Mould on to talk about his first solo record, which I'll never forget. Like people die, things change, industries go upside down. Like, I need to like that's the only way I've been able to uh th think about like, okay, how do we I guess I I feel it makes me oh it's I love it so much. Mike White. Come on in guys. But what if you had to like hit somebody, beat the shit out of somebody with the rifle? We don't really care, but like we love to ignore people at scale, so we really turn it on. And like you never lose somebody. You know what I mean?

But like there have been times where like especially when you're traveling, we've talked about this, right? I'm not gonna riff, because if I do get clever about it, you're gonna get what in the industry is called a make good, and you're gonna say, meh. You don't have uh an anchor tenant as we used to call it. Yeah, yeah. But it's from the time back when challenges were still good. No, that now I want it to be. Ned's a funny name. Okay. I'm not I'm not worthy. Man, we will get to I don't want to jump the podcast sharp but Shark, but this challenge. Like the the the we uh often have uh beef tenderloin for our uh our Christmas uh dinner and that's the kind of thing we're like mom or me is gonna be pretty picky about getting the good one. That is a text to send someone. But my apparatus is insane. Are they the people in the the like first room? So there's like a story credit like in movies and TV, and maybe you know more about this than I do. Uh but they decided not to.

Doc uh Stephen Muffet. And um sorry Dan McCoy, I don't remember exactly the name. And and I was like, um I was like, Matthew, I am I am So substitutes substitutes will not. I don't skip ads on black check. I don't have an opinion one way or another, but that's an extremely challenging part. I don't need to know about your commitment to media. Do you remember him from the first season? Um is his name Hugh Longform? But yeah. I'm going to make Merlin's life even worse if I if I don't do this. Um the money stuff just leaves my head. Like back in the public radio days, it would have been the one minute thing that played before the news. Yes, yes. From like 1992 to 1995. Like what you can do all of that in caliber.

So she r uh I love how in the credits it does the thing where she's like, fuck it. Well, we both we might like different things from one another, but we always try to find a show we can watch together. No. There's so much shitty in-app ads I don't get with Guardian and Ditto with DAI location-based ads. And I love how I loved I loved everything she had to say in that aspect. Okay, well he's doing a thing. There are so many other people that will do that for you. I Oh wait, are we are uh I haven't listened yet. And then one week I j just uh oh no, I think it was like two weeks. I'll write it down for the after show. And for a while I even tried to contact Spotify, but it started happening so often.

And it turns out it's a ri it's a different Sloan. Oh, I don't know what that means. Yeah, yeah. I am back. Oh Eve's Killer. is the most going through a divorce guy of all time. So you're getting back into shopping carts, I think you said unless you change it later. I put that in notes too because I I don't know if I did read that. Those are teaching us that everything yeah, everything we make is a commodity that exists. And it's just it's not a bunch of like stock music, stock videos, and stock everything. And now we gotta hire a bunch of people, but then we've hired all these people and there's not enough work to keep them busy. Like I think about how many people's lives it is made miserable and like how many podcasts it's ruined.

And then if there's like there's this one guy, this guy I've told you about, this guy, Paul Bruno, no idea who this guy is, but he makes the most baller fucking playlists that are right up my alley. I am very much in the contingent of people who A has no interest in sport sports because B It was awful. Get up there. Um, and I I I don't know, I just uh I it it's annoying when it's like And they include phones that were still being used in 2016. Yes. Thank you. I have such a boner. Like that's not even part of their milieu. Why why? This point in the season when what you're playing for? The uh the the poop stuff. And it's real funny how many of the DAI ads that you run into Because it's not only repetitive, but it's annoying, like so much of my oeuvre.

Yes. And maybe that's why I like old 97s more than podcasts this week. But I like I like Marvin, but and increasingly the secret app. Goliath was a little bit more. But before we get to all the butt stuff and the do-it harder stuff, just him like being delighted with the fact that strange But I think he's also just excited that women he doesn't know find him attractive. You need to fix that shit. You've got to photograph the front and back of your state issued ID, and uh you've got to photograph the front and back of your credit card, and then you've got to solve the maze puzzle. Could you please capture that? But then I gotta go read about like what's involved in trying to get a house uh with a six-figure or seven-figure income.

So maybe clarify what what it is that that shows that I'm missing? I don't get to spend time with my family and I don't get to make what I used to make anymore because the industry has changed so much. And most of it is from PRX or Radiotopia, which is And it it it it's just ooh. Hey Alex, if people wanted to help support the uh the the important work that you did on the on the do by Friday program, we're gonna be able to do that. Caliber, right? I almost want to use Firefox. I want to see the ultimate competitors. Yeah, because he's a substitute teacher Yeah, he's like Jackbox roommate, right? That's what we say in my house now. Oh yeah, so anyway, do you find yourself I was trying to feed you.

I don't think you need to talk uh to Felix and Co. That's a very good hunch that I have. It's kind of rhyming dementia. We see this on Survivor. And and like and the thing is like the the all my different means and uh apparatuses that uh exist in my life enough said And I guess it means figuring out what the story is, what the beats of the story are. You write my sister! is always a divorce guy, even before um Toby Fleischmann was a wife guy, he he is a he was a wife guy. Oh. The things we need right this second and things where it matters to get the good one. And I'm not trying to be contradictory, except here's the problem. And I instantly recognized, for better or for worse, usually worse, how much I am Holden Caulfield.

I'm not trying to be unkind. Yes, income. They do catering. Spotify is so good at so much stuff. Greg got no hair mostly in uh wait listen. I got six hours to talk to Jeff about physics and robotics. But the point of the story is that uh they got the two kids, he's back in the game, and like this thing, like he's I'm guessing works a lot. I go through I've I've been through this so it's like the fraud calls from your She puts them in parking meters, she puts them in gas tanks, and I'm like, because, you know, my family hates me. No. Who was the fourth? But my my favorite my okay, let me see if I can do an impersonation. Even in that um I don't even want to say i interview, but in in the uh Disney jump on you when you were there?

It literally did not go through my mind until I am like looking at my tax panicky over like the last week. Like it just doesn't feel good to have to search for where I get software updates in order to get it. Do you ever see Napoleon Dynamite? Uh David versus Goliath. And a as Taffy has said in in interviews, um, I wrote this book because I wanted to make money and at the time that's how you made money and I needed to raise my kids. Uh you like on Mando or Andor you'll see like show was created by uh what, John Fevreau. Um he um and he made a reference to back in nineteen ninety-five when there was quote a guided by voices EP coming out every month. That's that's D you ever get that from DAI? Which is fine. Um Trash Theory on YouTube. Um cards is probably a little big to be called boutique, but boutique, when you're boutique, it's not like you're a one-person firm and it's not like you're a giant company. Cause again, I kept thinking about it would be so hard to clean that house. Mm-hmm Oh, you're sorry. Yeah, and this is the first time. Good job. I think there's a number one, I know there's a number two, and I know there's a number four. I I I'm pretty sure at this point that I am over tipping, but I feel bad if I don't. And I mean it's it's what it's what we used to call like I remember this is term I learned from David Siegel's wonderful uh re David Siegel had these two really good books about web design in the nineties that all of us cut our teeth on.

The one the one where you disappeared for for like a week. And it's like, oh no, wait, Alex isn't asleep. What's the band of the makeup club? It just drives me bonkers. Coming in there. Okay. You're saying you're saying that because this show takes place then that if I underst I'm sorry, I'm just clarifying because I didn't understand.

Wasn't that the deal? Like my mortgage I've had since I was twenty one that I have not paid. And I get that. I w I do wonder if that was an experiment. But what you're describing here is like, okay, I, you know, uh uh forgive me, I honestly don't mean this sound racist, but we just called a Chinese wall. Because like it's you start to feel like, okay, uh, sure, like Glenn Howerton, I imagine he does not Like, how do you feel when you're on a shovel blog, a max shovel blog, and see a sponsored post? I'm back to work, but I spent, really, if I'm being honest, close to an hour yesterday just organizing my playlists. It's not gonna be like you're on the eighth episode and you're like, shoo, that must be it. And like, you know what I mean though? In every way Matthew is is without peer and literally the greatest spouse in the world, but I get the feeling you get cheated on a lot with media, whereas you hold up Um but uh I think I tip pretty well, but this fella you But um but it's such a like a comp compact little like and it's well done. And no, we don't want like, you know, I don't know, uh, t-shirts for child molesters to be sponsoring um our big piece here.

And there and so here's the problem is like when they talk about whether it's Ronald Reagan with Iran Contra or whether it's Trump. I I will find it. Like, I mean this it it's got the like strange at least the very first episode I have people to do that. I wanna finish this goddamn stupid Drail. God bless them. After show or okay to guide two nights. But no matter what it is, we'll find a way to fuck this up for nickels. There's a lot of olive oil there. The people who replaced Iraglass are gone. Yeah.
