422. The Box of Unknown Weight

Have you ever had to discipline a rocker? I've heard that when you bring a cat to first of all if if you already have a cat in your house, you always introduce cats in a place that neither of them has ever been. But the thing it's kind of like prisoner's dilemma, like a cat theory of mind, where they're both behaving like it's the other cat's place. I think s our parents will drive us to the mall and we'll go to York Steakhouse. And and on top of it all, then like you've gotta say what size hey hey um hey butterfall. Well, there's a lot of people who've lived through a lot of stuff in life, including in the last century. And now your your your girlfri your your sister's girlfriend s girlfriend sister hates you.

And it was own it was its own kind of thing and it wasn't a big thing. But they all if you listen, their music is very like synthesized. I'm this is the first time hearing of this. Which is kind of a neat thing. Why don't you stop annoying me? And so Harpo started doing an impression of him and he just kept he just kept exp like inflating it and make it making it bigger each time. And you're playing games that involve like explosions and making a mess and stuff. There's a big staircase, all right, and then you need to work around the funny y you need to make your funny bits, and occasionally that does involve someone just kind of like sta standing around But I I do think about like okay, what did uh the uh the like the oh god, I should know this line the lined script They've been grilling hot dogs again.

How do you get something like that? And she'd say, hello Merlin. Eddie Halbertons? And like they start especially for worse. Of something like, why do we put people in jail? Like, oh, I learned a lot from this experience. Boo. And like, oh my god, what an unlikely couple. Which is the one that's like. D public enemy number one, five oh says freeze and I gotta run. No, keep talking. You get your side, you're da-da-da-da, and you push your tray through. and it makes it easier to get the milk there. Coming down from Canada, look inside the pool. And I'm going to it's so freeing once you once you start doing it and you've succeeded a couple I'm just telling you guy to guy, once you have pulled it off a few times, you feel so fucking free I'm telling you about something I like.

That's probably still my favorite. There's a there's a thousand Marks Brothers movies I can tell you to completely skip. And it's got a fun s it's got more of a fun story. Yeah, we're Christian. Oh you Zucker Zucker Punch could be another challenge. I don't I don't know, I think. I would say at least pretty good, one of which I think very good, documentaries about the the Marx brothers, but especially through the point of view of like, you know, their kids. The Barks brothers talk about it. Check out. Uh potentiator. From um Dead Kennedys who has he has such a at least in the 80s he had such a distinctive voice. You know, it's a persona, I think. Well, if you're willing to enforce dog rules, then yes, and that's kind of what it's like to have a band at your house.

Like the way that we were encouraged to like quote discipline our dog was just I don't even want to get into it. panel where it's like all I'm doing is confusing and frustrating this animal and making it think that I'm a capricious asshole. They're losers. You can introduce two new dogs. And I've heard and well I'm thirty you here, I heard uh on an NPR show a long time ago that was really good. from that situation. Please, please, because we've got to be a little bit more than a lot of people. I heard that when you bring a new ca a cat into your house, this it seems mean to to people like dog people like me, but possibly you put a cat in like the if you got a guest bathroom, you put a cat in a small room.

Does that help? You know, Merlin is four and little Melanie is four, and for the next two months they're gonna live on the same cul-de-sac, so now that's Merlin's little girlfriend, which is fine. Class. Spi I th obviously it's time people are ready to start talking about this. an excuse and a reason. I mean they'll really be figuring it out in about five years. was through a bunch of various contrived things that didn't make sense, but it sounded a little bit like a sort of thing. uh cha end up changing the subject about stuff by uh presenting a plausible reason that's better cover or more interesting to your allies. So we still cut the ends off. about this. Well if you're asking the question, you're not just a troublemaker, you're you're an idiot.

To become stronger is for you to set their house on fire on Christmas Eve? In retrospect, but that's again, it's uh reason versus excuse, I need a better term, but like it's one thing just to come up with like your story about how something went and it could have gone worse. Well when I was a kid my you know, our whole house burned down. Which is probably not a great way to start a relationship. Club, nightclubs, whatever, right? Actually Romeo and Julia's not even the best example. How far do you like to get outside the the cultural gene pool when you were dating as a dater? There's always the chance that it will end with some kind of misunderstanding, acrimony, sadness, dis disharmony, whatever it is.

Like these are like little they're they're like s or you know, something you've worked out and you've performed and you've honed over time and it's whereas like I I don't know why and I love this about the movie, but very earlier in in the movie there's a scene Remember where the person's like announcing everybody as they come in? Remember there later in the movie there's that outdoor party thing and that guy and Groucho are gonna like it seems like they're gonna have a fight or a duel at that event. It's just workman-like like uh uh exposition to keep the plot moving. I'm they're I mean they're essentially like s you're yeah, like s slotted i in because all of those were part of their vaudeville uh act and I d did not know duck soup has the Was that uh l later on, you know, it was like we're just 4G was looking for a laugh.

Exploding effect, like adding this puff of dust. A Big Mac where it looks tasty. Think about all the resets they've gotta do. that I'm like, uh, just tr I was trying to find interviews and of course none of those exist because no one wants to hear This is what you were s uh saying is yeah, there's so much blocking involved that it they it they are essentially performing on a stage because they are sound stages. You know, I got like a lot of people, if there's any version anybody knows, it's by Glenn Gould. It's for somebody who's like a scholar of this stuff, this is all basic shit. And the thing is, you won't remember this, most of you, until you remember if you've seen Dunkirk. of the Goldberg variations is so crisp and articulated and understated that when it that I heard the composer did not give enough credit to other people for, but that's what I heard. you know, whatever, O de Joy, or Beethoven's Fist Symphony, or Takata and Fugue and D minor, or like, you know, all the bait or even stuff you don't know the name of. pops it really pops and whereas I love the acrobatics of the 1955 Glenn Gould version I actually appreciate the dynamics of the 81 version Uh some people make being enthusiastic about something, whether that be an enthusiasm about something.

I'm I I'm not being negative. It's um anyway I just that I don't know a ton of stuff by Elgar, but that's two, you know. By the end by the time you get to the S's and the Ts at any graduation ceremony, you're like, I do not need to hear any more pomp or circumstance. That uh uh so much of Doctor Strange love is uh duck soup. Yeah. Uh I lost my train of thought completely. Right? Like but you make it look pretty rather than how it'll look, understandably. you know, just p shooting a camera at people fucking I don't know, that's probably not the same thing. And you talk about major twice cut once. uh the sort of adjustments that you you know, y you're not building a giant not a yacht. many staircases is because staircases look really good in in a wide shot and you don't need to add a bunch of stuff to make it look like yeah this is a real place Which was pretty screwed up.
