It's his editing that, you know, I think is so special. I'm struggling, Alex. So like Gene Kelly, really well known as a dancer, but boy, he could also really sing and he was a very funny actor. But Tony always knew exactly what was on a tape because he'd had enough experience with just you know, production stuff. And um that movie is the all the scenes that happen inside that house in particular, uh, I mean, to me they were up there with Craigers. you say, oh man, why do you have all these tapes? I've talked about this before, about 84, 85. But the thing is, it's kind of actually like the inversion of a video game. And then Scott Simpson goes, illegal. that when I sing the beginning of the Queen song kind of magic, you don't recognize it as that Bob Mortimer bit.

His son's PlayStation gaming chair, he s sits on a kitchen island and does his own dental work for fifteen years. Well I can speak for Alex. And if you have any intention uh of watching weapons, I would stop at this point and then come back after you've had a chance to watch it. I mean, do we know that that's Alex or am I just in am I j are we am I just uh that's Alex, right, at the beginning. But like in this movie, like, oh my god, what happened? So like if you like, you know, if you like Watchmen, like and the way Watchmen gets in the weeds about stuff that seems like a simple concept, uh, you're gonna love the leftovers. Damalindeloff doesn't fuck around. And of course Aunt Lydia, as played by the great Ann Dowd, uh is in Aunt but her character, Patty, woof.

Well then what happens when you start having to sort through the person's stuff and you realize that they did have a long-term affair that you never knew about? I'm not angry. You get some nicer and quit smoking. No, I didn't notice that clock. I get how you could watch and even make adolescence. And here's my brain all the time. There's a lot of good HBO series where the most legendary episodes of certain seasons are the second to the last episode, not the last episode. It's called The Garveys at Their Best. Oh boy. Certainly a lot of people moved out when they tried to get away from Edison and his lawyers, everybody went out to Hollywood. Does it Silver Horseshoe Review? And not in just like an OCD way, but in a really functional way that I never did.

I don't know. Yeah, kind of fetishizing his early, early stuff and just reading about the making of weapons and going back and trying to uh uh watching old clips. Well one thing I am very excited about that I hope will appeal to everybody, I hope, is that like you're you're further along on something right now than you realize you know, inside the actor studio about my my met and my process or something. I don't I don't know any famous civil engineers. Isn't that cool that kids are still doing that? It's my favorite thing I've ever done. Bob Mortimer claims that he's done his own dental work for fifteen years, and then goes into extraordinary detail explaining what he does. 'Cause we're that's another way to put that, and I'm gonna put it in a super nice way, is we're going to I'm going to feel um unencumbered.

It's a TV show guy, Yellowstone. Having to choke a guy while he jerks off and she just cries a little bit. The black guy who like can the black guy you can remove your burden. Uh he puts up he gets his ass kicked all the time. You know, it's Disneyland it's Disneyland, man. No, I mean that's a compliment. Are we talking about the craft of filmmaking or are you talking about one person who makes films? Sorry, that was my Irish Demet impersonation. The truck leaving every morning that's beep beep. Uh nothing. Uh I had some coffee cake and uh I uh uh uh uh uh I passed uh a funny thing today uh and took a photo. But you know. Yes, like a like a good truck. Uh if it if it's the if it would give us something to get you on track, that would be great.

when they say the last episode of something, I I s encourage them to s to consider whether they mean the most recent episode of something. And then there's other things. pretty much to watch weapons, my favorite movie of the summer. Um to whom did I start in music? Okay. in in musicals and the history of that and how it differs in India because people are really used to, you know, things being dubbed and you know, just the idea of like authenticity, right? You know, they're talking about like you you didn't find that many people like Gene Kelly or Debbie Reynolds. So like you do if your work, I imagine, because I've never gone through this anywhere near the no, I've never gone through this for practical purposes, but it's not like I went to Rada.

Or what was the other example I gave? uh uh famous hot dog place. and had mentors there and then did magic and he like really idolized the uh the guy who did the uh what's it called there the You know, you have to imagine that his interest in show business and his ability, you know, to be a comedy magician. or started to learn something that eventually made them good at the other things that they did. not not fame, but m what they're known f uh for. the producers of Survivor when they're going through casting. Uh suppose you're wondering how I ended up here. uh Mac based video products video editing share do you want to share his name can you find a point of the story and so but he um he was and he was my roommate and he's one of my best pals and um And when the moment comes that you get to come in and consult on on uh or be like I don't know, maybe the engineering lead with a bunch of tweeners.

How to hit deadlines and budgets and failing at the ability to hit them, how to renegotiate them, or h how to responsibly abandon them or whatever. Oh nope, I completely misunderstood the joke. And he thinks it's the fanciest thing in the world. that is embraced more and it's exciting and fun because I don't there's moments in horror movies or comedy movies? I'm not going to make it uh about you. As long as I'm allowed to push back on when you try to find profundity in something that's just good luck or something, that's okay. It's it's not I'm not a celebrity. w what I'm very reluctant to ever do is like ah, never mind. how they never got the thing they should have gotten. And that's I don't want to feel provoked about having to push back on hagiography about my own dumb decisions.

There's not one TED Talk that's going to fix your life. and and not pivot. i is a wholesome thing to talk about. Not because you necessarily want like a big wins journal, but it sure wouldn't hurt to jog your memory at a low time when you need to quote update your resume. Hey, you told me you want a self-starter. Like, they're probably you may have had a lot of questions about the world and why it was the way it was, or maybe how at a higher level it was the way it was, but It's like nope. And let's be honest, disguise and even hide the things that you worry other people will see as failures in yourself. And so we, I feel like I was raised to minimize a lot of the stuff, almost like the file drawer effect.

instead of publishing it. And so you you grow up trying to puff yourself up about how you're a good boy who gets uh or you're a good girl who gets good grades and you go to church and you do the thing and you're in scouts and you achieve and you go to the school and you do all the things and you just you just keep hoping against all hope. I don't know if I'm I'm putting this well, but like I I I really see it that way. It's I I get I get to keep playing on the same quarter if people are pleased with what I've done, and I have to start over and get get to the back of the line if I've done something that displeased other people. You've uh you've been in scouts, you've or you've uh I don't know, done Model UN, or you're the boy who's done this and that and like hey Junior achievements.

and your personal sense of doubt, shame, and j let's be honest, anger and envy about the rest of the world, the way you all are. Do you want me to? like just fucking think pieces and the moral panic of the uh isn't Everybody's doing their best every day. And like this are not everything is everything. It's it wouldn't be f it wouldn't be funny. Now the it is I think the phrase you just used was now it won't it won't be funny. I don't want to spoil it for you. Um, I've given you the warning, like a gentleman, and I will feel my biggest problem is not spoiling other things when I spoil this, but I will be so Spoiling the motherfucking shit out of every aspect of this movie. You wanted now. Oh god, I guess I am saying like, yeah, it it's it's fascinating.

Please. But I'm not sure. I kept saying Kevin Costner. People know they've seen the I guess. And why is he wear I mean it is, but he's wearing the Gladys the witchy Gladys makeup that's a little haunting. working with Lindelof to build this story that's just extraordinary. But there's just something was like nobody's happy being in that spin the bottle situation. Uh, and include stuff, a la, children of men, another great similar kind of project like this. This is just in the first episode. Like what if you found out that that beautiful family you lost and you know and so like anyway, this is I don't know if this is exactly a spoiler, but perhaps as in life, everybody in the leftovers who's the stayed Got a rap.

Yeah, let's talk about COVID. with COVID. She has not touched anything in their rooms. I would get to go on Peter Pan's flight with my kid as a kid. leftovers that are the James uh Brolins character, Archer, he has to look at the life that he actually has rather than the life that he liked to think he had. But the mystery is everything that's outside the box. Like, you know. The big theme in of this, which I don't know, you can look at it a whole bunch of different ways. who say adolescence oh boy doesn't really make you think about phones and I'm like you've got to be fucking kidding me yeah okay sure I get that I And if you took all the phones away today, I don't think that problem would disappear.

I think they're all great. being witness to that. What the fuck happened? Oh the elevates everything. who had experience creating a show where an audience basic is the zeitgeist was obsessed with the answer to the mystery. Planner uh no, I will sell the leftovers because uh th if you liked weapons and you have watched it if you are uh here in this show. You can just sit there and munch on 'em so that when you find one of mine you don't just steal it and try to take my sentence away from me. Uh that really started with Game of Thrones, but goes to other things now. You get so used to watching Margaret Quali and going, wow, she's really pretty and a good actor. And then we learn what happened for many of our friends at the moment that the event happened.

And like still loves her family and like loves her brother who's there and oh it's also heartbreaking. And she goes, and judging Amy says, uh, well, how does that make you feel? Yeah. It was like the ki the sp uh it's daily, right? sudden noises, but sometimes now that's a truck going beep beep out of a little like alley, because we have alleys in Chicago, and I kinda wish And I'm not sure I'm not sure. Do you uh come into these c recordings completely colds? There's different kinds of bits and there's different kinds of preparing of bits. Text channels about how you're talking about. Way down, I'm turning you way up. Well, just if you knew the show, I just did a really funny bit where I said it's a start.

things this week m even though mm it's o oh God it's only Wednesday. It goes along with all the comedy that I've been watching and listening to this week because it's comedy-minded too. You know, it's like faulty I'm with with respect and z zero humility. in Hollywood and on Broadway, the triple threat, which is somebody who can act really well, somebody who can dance really well, and someone who can sing really well. And i i yes, you were you were a full-on guy who did uh things uh. I imagine part of it is that um like I'm listening um right now as we speak I was just listening to the Dakota ring on uh dubbing people singing. all that jazz or famously chorus line. I've never been through all that.

And depending on the kind of like in the forties and fifties, I bet Broadway was a place you could go to do a lot of stuff, right? Not how they got to their like thing that got them well known. A another median or how people get to the current job or project that they are working on. And in his wonderful, I want to say audiobook, in his wonderful autobiography, but I would say please listen to the audiobook version, it's just I don't know. I'm there's a lot of beeping today. why something happened, da da da da da da da da da da you know, all these things and you're like 'cause w you know, it always it does really sound like you're trying to do a biopic about somebody and go, Oh you know, Paul McCartney saw his base in a window and then he married it or whatever.

because y you're avoiding the I understand exactly what you're saying, which is why it's hard d to ask you that question because we're the main thing. I know, but not every well, we have talked about panel show or Taskmaster enough, I think, that people know what it is. as a whole show is this phenomenal, like mind-blowing production when you start thinking about it from a totally agree. Where did you get uh th that type of mind that you can not just find funny people to put on your show? you know, the organizational skills that it would take, the infrastructure to just do the Edinburgh Fringe show, let alone th one T V show, let alone an international series, let alone twenty si you know, there's all of this stuff.

He's the primary creator of most of the challenges. the streamlined process it is today. And like the ability, the organizational skills that you need to do stop motion animation and the steady hand and like, you know what I mean? Pretty mind boggling. in um South Korea. I don't know. Um and if you have requests, by the way, if you have requests for guilty remnant posters, I saw you like that toot. the magnet, which got me thinking also about You Look Nice Today because it was in the same I think it was in the same super secret text channel when we were talking about that. And the things that you've publicly done and publicly talked about that have uh uh nice. uh Zack Kregger, not just, you know, y uh not just comedians meeting a m I guess the trope being their It's just probably not the thing you think you're far along on.

Vulnerab like especially being a fan, stuff like that. And that's where I get to make my pitch for things like vulnerability and being a fan. Or how they're going to positively influence something that you're going to make. Uh I think everything probably every uh opportunity or quote career s success has initially come from with these rooms full of tapes and you don't know what's on it. Tony, however Tony's personality was, he operationalized that in a way that became useful. There's other when I get back to this this other issue of what I'm just roughly calling soft skills. There are there are just quiet heroes at every workplace. I guess I guess the meta skill in some ways, without making it too cute, there is a metal meta-skill to being aware to being aware of is difficult for many young people, at least for this formerly young person to think about.

Resumes are so silly, but you know, you got oh you gotta update it get it, get it out, whatever. And gets looked at by by people. uh a class with someone I'd never met to read fourteen books in seven weeks and then uh meet the author and he took us to breakfast. This is this is not, oh God, what was that wonderful line? I want to take care of her. Something like that. When you're in at uh at at a at any number of ages, but let's just say arbitrarily for me, like me me and you like maybe eight or nine, like are likely to be lauded. is nothing but constraint on every side. it's it's a it's a it's just a series of gates. The then Till that a America then your resume really pops out because they can tell you somebody who really walked on that line and thrived.

But I don't know. the way I was raised, which really frustrates me in retrospect. That would get you way off that line I put you on, right? Yeah, no ho hoped. people in authority didn't just uh they they didn't understand and weren't even able to notice the thing that was happening. Trauma. Um that's like our friend said. No. Archer's character, you know, his whole James Broolin character, yes? uh hardest or um I don't know what you even want to call it. And even when you first get the get that, you probably just won't really fully get it until you've been through a couple of 'em. And then you see primarily then like here's that person's version of the story or their you could say their POV, although it's not strictly their POV.

So at least five. Briefly, just assert something. Like uh Archer is clearly uh so like Archer is the dad. of an entire classroom of children, except for one, disappearing. Uh bh uh it means that at 217 AM and it again an entire classroom of uh everyone everyone listening has seen the movie, so they know this. They're running d they just fucking leave. her uh issues with alcoholism are portrayed uh I felt like in a more realistic way than I've seen in that yeah part of it is Funny but it's not super uh dire and tra uh or tragic in the way that I I don't know, it's like Yeah, yeah. Um, this is the beginning of the movie where there's a child talking. I don't think so, but when I watched it a third time I was like oh seems it seems incontrovertible to me that that is Alex and by the end of the movie you're supposed to you are meant to believe that was Alex speaking to someone.

famil the kid's aunt Gladys, uh who is Amy Madigan, who I'm not that familiar with as an actress and am now u obsessed with Kevin? Kevin Garvey. Uh and and and Emma B pretty, but like the sensible wife of I bet she's played Kevin Costner's wife in something. I did actually become a little bit invested in it. Y'all y'all listening at home will will not get this, but it is so hard to follow what Alex wants to do in one of these episodes. All of the jump scares come from her, along with a lot of what's not true. to Justine until the ver like very end of the last scene or one of the like the climax of the movie. Well why d why did you l like this? p parallel but very different results in the two pieces of art.

that her husband and both of her children would just disappear in the same room that she was standing in. It's happened to 3% of the world's population. Um you th there's the there's a uh it's a term from like a previous age of like there's this weird shit that goes down at the end of a century. But the thing that really only really grabbed me on subsequent viewings and especially on this second viewing of the second season of this show is it's absolutely about grief and loss. But even from the first episode, there's this phrase I was using with my kid, and I'm I'm probably not using it correctly, but I fantasy ecla, like end of the century. Mm-hmm. Oh, the guy from Numberwang, if you guys recognize him from Numberwang.

But then for example, Matt, played by the doctor, Christopher Eccleston, like part of so the guilty remnant is this group that won't talk and they run around provoking people that we're the reminders. Everybody's got a theory about like how this happened. That uh okay, yes. And in some cases, you can, as this gets revealed, you, and remember, this is the guy who learned a lot from doing lost. I mean, you don't get until you will get by the end of the first, the incredible fucking first episode of the Lefters, you will get that they've been canily And the person who tells her that is her is her brother. Or, you know, shit, let's take it all the way. Where you're like, you know, let's go back to the way things used to be.

all the things that you could go on MSNBC and talk about. that got into it, like you can think of Bill and Hillary as a good example, probably. Pack it all up and go away family trip, you know, in the same way as you would when your kids say fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, right? Madeline and I came up with every reason in the world that we weren't gonna cancel the our trip, which was in the last week of March. But like, uh let alone my kid lost in that time. But like didn't we fucking didn't we all learn so much about how we are once normal life went away? So yes, these are stories about grief and these are stories about loss and these are stor stories about mys- sorry, the mystery box, right? Archer is struggling to figure out all he knows how to do is apply I have to say a little bit of surprisingly toxic masculinity because I don't think he's like a tough guy.

I found this movie incredibly engrossing. implementation level. It's like where you're like, I I I this this guy is really like sewn into the tapestry of American uh popular entertainment in ways you just can't even understand. with uh the lost like oh we want to know we want to figure out are they important people versus ideas Alex people versus ideas are we talking about what are we talking about we're talking about the craft of filmmaking or and just enjoy seeing that I love the noise that Merlin makes where he's like meh Well no because that that that's the noise I usually make. Well, there was a lot of um overlap, but the way that they're experiencing uh uh what you uh call a lo I mean is loss and I think s it's tr traumatic for them in very different ways.

That is how I I feel. the pilot episode. that have a great first season I love usually but especially have a first episode that I love that's all fine but there's an even smaller subset which is especially We we have, but the whole first season. And we learned that one of the therapist patients was Patty, who would later go on to be in the guilty remnant. Think about you know think about uh Aunt Lydia. That's fucking crazy. And then when it does happen, she becomes one of the regional leaders of a little cult that won't let people forget about it. It yeah, because it is i it's a little bit. keep the surface tension on our meniscus from breaking. How strangely r related things are to can can be to one another.

you know, relations exist and connections can be made and can relations can be a kind of connection, but like did you ever imagine that this person would end up you know you can see this on The Walking Dead, you can see this on you can see in all these places, but like, do you think Okay, well uh hey everybody, it's due by Friday, and uh today is September 24th, 2025. And should that matter? Uh I'll try to make this interesting. I want to talk about offline or previously offline discussions that have been in Super Secretary to a podcast you used to do or I mean I don't I don't want to say whether it is done or not. Because then people just want to talk about how the person's dead or because the how the show doesn't exist anymore.

Um, yes, I enjoyed doing it very much. Ex which is why I tried to approach it with sensitivity and feeling I'm not mad. You know, uh it wasn't like we were recording anything that different from what came out, but uh I you know, I think Adam really d did have uh a really good sense of how to edit those and made what was recorded. especially funny. No, he wasn't. And uh is there a connection you're uh thinking about or what is it uh what did you think of music, comedy you know, j Jordan Peel, you know, he'd uh I wouldn't say I don't know if he started in comedy, but I became familiar with him through comedy And please notice I I didn't just use those verbs, I also use those uh, you know, modifier really well.

or for that matter MYU and like came out and like had to enter into a creative job market where you're competing with other professional people. Martin doing his shows. Anyways, and talking about that and like it and kind of its relationship to humor and what was it he says to something like I realized that the the way to be funny was to like have a joke without a joke or something like that the way but and the way he describes it is is way better but And so much more interesting to me. his start uh somewhere el again, when I mean start, I do not mean the thing that like propels someone into And he liked, um, uh I think he's a music guy, you know? writing uh doing editing. about how to use like After Effects or like all the different like Mac apps.

He uh it's so funny, I c I something I always remember picking up about him from early on, before he went to film school, but from early on, like his thesis project was a live show Like being able to to like be able to log all of your videotape and know what's on what part and where all is like and then it was not it It when the moment comes up that you have an opportunity to make a film that's funny, it sure will help that you know how to label your tapes. Yes. Not just being familiar with the story beats of The Shining, that's not really important. He does that in a really a f very funny comedy sketch about a traveling professional man who apparently has never heard of a continental breakfast.

And then have you ever seen us? the Giltony oh or rather who the Guilty after the event in Leftovers. comic book movies eventually get boring if it's the same like oh my god then the he then his uncle died spoilers from uh Taskmaster and and trying to find old Graham Norton and Alex Horn stuff. improv uh uh group or whatever. No, I am You know you know how awkward I how awkward I awkwardly I feel about that. beats those th that was one of the first things I noticed in us, not in um and rewatching um get out it's get out, right? and scoring and stuff like that in both comedy and horror, but you're say you're not trying to say that like comedy horror is is like a an O'Current new thing. Yeah, no no no sorry.

Not surpassingly funny, but it's weapons was a funny movie. We're talking about a retrospective of the I mean you brought up Steve Martin, I guess, but like a retrospective of uh I'm happy to talk about stuff That can be useful and entertaining to people. uh I think f uh people my age need to do less of that. What? And and if even if they're not excited about what they can do to become a fan of something that they could really love and everybody's different and like there's not Um, because that's and I and and what I'm also reluctant to do, as you can tell what I'm bristling at, is I also don't want every conversation I have about creativity to get to a point where I just fucking sound angry with people.

a show or a fan of anything, but just watching someone who is good at what they do and being like, oh shit, that is s something that I need to d learn. every episode of this American life in the nineties. But ruthless prioritization is another way to put it, right? Uh, all those kinds of things. I've stopped saying it because it's not useful, but I don't know I don't know if you ever had to put it back when resumes used to matter. To have a record of like, okay, this thing happened and it didn't go well and it turned out this way, like a school project, for example, I think those are a good thing to write down. If somebody goes, you know, hey, can you be a self-starter? You probably didn't have there were not that many people coming to you on like a daily basis and saying, Do you have any questions about how life is working right now?

It's very clear what we're supposed to do in a lot of ways. You you have already learned to self-censor. And I think with that comes a lot of attendant shame that you've had so many misses, that your denominator is so off for how it comports with what everybody expected of you. that people notice how hard you're straying on the line you how you're constantly asking people to notice how well you're staying on the line you never asked for. how to get away with stuff and not get caught as somebody who's even considered ever walking off the line. walking the straight line that has been given to you and that you never requested. But, you know, bec I feel like in part because of that, this is such a subtle little fuzzy bunny of a point.

Uh and again, soft skills or organizational skills, people skills, those are all really vital skills to have that I mean, those were like existential conjugal visits. w when a liter you know, going off your metaphorical line, able to pull off without anybody noticing except the people I cared about, whether that be doing something dumb in school that A lot of g you know, I don't know, getting over that trauma, looking at You know, it's a kind of magic. I fe i I think I felt different about this movie, not just because of its subject matter, which has a lot to do I mean talk talk about trauma has a lot to do with uh every character's trauma. uh different crises of uh conscience, especially there's multiple characters who have a crisis with masculinity, like I b uh Um No.

And it is traumatic in a bunch of different ways. The reason that I enjoy What a weird fucking question. of uh m what is kind of current yeah see that's why I'm asking I'm that's why I'm asking because that would not be the way that I would frame it. His g like his whole arc is feeling like a failure as a father. uh Addict's chapter really really funny and had a lot of good comedic um beats and uh his the way that he reacts to this Sometimes even if you're the most everything right and it's still everything will fall apart and there's nothing you can do about it. The the way too that a I I mean the way that kind of uh uh you called it the um I guess the like the little prelude or the ver the little narrations.

So you do the watcher, I guess. This this whole thing is gonna come together and you're going to figure out what happens. Uh who's um who's the who's the urine movie? I just loved her as a a villain and how we don't really understand trap what all's what her role in all of this is. Yeah. I I don't know, it uh it's unlike m most horror films, like her l one action Like the I all I said was the th the first two jump scares in the movie aren't glass. Um, I I I I I only have one thing to say and it's not really about this. Um and as with this film, no one knows where they went and no one knows why. uh qu quite an amazing abrupt change from season one, just masterfully done. are this boy and and the woman whose class all these people disappeared from, you know.

Boy, this is so subtle. dionysic and nihilistic things that are happening. But it's also about what gets revealed about the life you thought you had once you've experienced that loss. answers, sort of like in Watchmen when you know frogs fall from the sky. and timetables in ways that we never certainly there's all of that stuff, but like, whoa. apartment in Brooklyn all the time together? how we succeed or fail based on an invisible network of things that we never knew existed until it was gone. And the treats that her kids liked. for a really cool like Los Angeles trip. It was at the time it was the stupidest thing in the world. It's a very minor thing in the grand scale of things. You never had the life you thought you had before the event.

The more time you have by yourself without the other people around, the more you realize you never have the light, you never had the life you thought you had Because it was a very always a very forward-looking thing. That is absolutely not what I got from adolescence. And the delta between us and what we understand. Like, fuck. People in usually not main roles, usually featured or supporting character roles, but people who elevate everything they're in. Oh. Is part of what I said this before, the p part that the the weapons like what got me was that Don't think it is an uncommon opinion that that expectation from it be like, you know, the popularity of the show kinda m kinda m made it a bummer because you lost what made it special.

Uh I didn't know that. are uh the of the leftovers, yes, only once though. in order to take a p m take make your point and to em inflate the importance of your point, you have now at least once and probably twice said the actually the entire series, and I just want to make sure you're remembering that every season of this show is pretty different. you know, each season the like story also see oh god, you're right. Okay. TV shows I love with a first scene that I think is indelible. And like I I hope it will somehow even more elevate your opinion of how talented this young woman is. Brilliant viewer, you could watch that and go, ooh, that's cool. I'll bet that's why she's at a therapist. That's weapons.

The just the layers of being able to turn this over and think about, not just layers in like, oh, you wrote a clever plot here, but I'm just so attracted to to people who can show that like something that we all know but don't always appreciate, which is how Uh, how are you? Yeah. The kind people this one shall be nervous and beginning music. Should have done it musically. You know, but that background in magic is like what helped them to get to where they realized they could be funny, I guess. celebrities or performers and their public relations people would really try to like generate these sorts of stories that like explain like somebody's background. making uh doing small comedy things obviously that everyone uh not everyone but I thought it was Edinburgh Fringe is where Taskmaster started.

Which is like l let's leave a little I don't know, could we even come toward toward my side a little bit and say, let's take a snapshot of somebody in their career? uh the accidents, the hard work, the whatever it was that like allowed you to get to the moment this snapshot took place. I mean just one one that I think it feels very relevant. the breakfast the the the Continental Breakfast Buffet at a motel and acting like it's the most luxurious thing he's ever done is completely hilarious. you mentioned how good the Adam editing was and uh how someone inter meets an Adam Lysigore the same way Um, the skills with you know knowing how to I don't want to overstate this. And so, and I'm not trying to turn that into some kind of like a big biopic story, but what I am saying is like, hey, what if we looked at all that differently?

is because you never wanted that line and because you're ashamed of all the times you stepped off that line and you never got to be the person everybody decided you should have been. And so consequently, here's that little bunny. And and it's the best you can do is come up with your fucking TEDx talk about how all your failures have led you to success. The the things that I am m most personally proud of as a person, not just Do you want the real answer? former career as somebody who theoretically tried to help people, it does eventually, and I think in your case inevitably kind of get turned into what appears to be advice. hurt other people's feelings to try and make ourselves feel better. S in I yeah, it I not just you look nice today, but the interesting skills people use in order to make something funny.

And like if you're not listening and you're not paying attention, you're not going to hear Scott very quietly go, illegal, and say the funniest thing anyone has ever said is when Scott Simpson goes, it just barely audibly Scott Simpson, because we're going click, click, rhythm, rhythm. Oh, he's funny. You still have managed not to watch this. And they like the ability to go yell at somebody. by by by by announcing that this is a very uh interesting movie to watch and the way it's told it looks great and the way it's told is fascinating. Like you you know how you're supposed to react to something as a dad. was I I don't know, really difficult and interesting to watch. didn't care about what the mystery was, but how the characters were were grappling with it.

Oh uh shh. Uh what? ripples out in ways that aren't like in you know, she doesn't um trying to I don't know how to explain like most thing is I don't know how to explain this. Uh I liked a lot. I don't think this spoils the leftovers. That is on this is a multiple ith rewatch of the leftovers for me. I mean, the thing you get from the beginning is that really, it's not going to surprise you to learn that in so many ways In the case of one person in this program, there was chances there were I think the chances were one of one out of 128,000. I'm doing this slowly and at length because I really want you turning over that idea that this is a show about grief and this is a show about loss. There will be a point in their life where they start to think this happened because of something I did.

The last chances the smallest thing that a person could ever lose was something that we lost. In some ways, no matter how if you you sit with that grief, you sit with that loss, you go through the healthiest process, you you avoid the cults. I've I've had the last experience with a lot of people in my family at a lot of things already. None of us know it. The yeah, I was gonna say Keith David. you have to deal with the mystery, but then, you know, we as an audience don't know the myster we get it kind of, but the leftovers, the entire series I mean I I Game of Thrones and a lot of other programs. Like the ones you remember, like if you remember the Battle of Blackwater, like that was a second to the last episode of a season.

of the leftovers is called the Garveys at their best. And the therapist is like, well, what you mean what? And on the left on the leftovers, if you gave him five three, four seasons, you'd eventually discover like how angry he is about all these different things, you know, that come out now that we don't have the pre-COVID world to to help keep the uh No, I am up for record and and uh you had a chance to start completely over and instead you told told an anecdote about how you wish a truck was children. start uh d doing magic at a place like por Portillos, which is a hot it is a restaurant slash Uh well uh did No I know I know this anybody in in like the the So yeah, so anyway I talk a lot about those kinds of jobs.

but put a bunch of funny people who will work well together on a specific type of season. I keep thinking about this friend of mine from college, a couple friends of mine in particular. kind of in the spirit of knee plays and but in the spirit of a lot of different things. Like, he knows whoever put that together knows exactly what they're doing in that sketch. So much horror, obviously. It's so freaking important. Like to be able to to to uh w be be prepared to tell people about instances where you stepped up to do something. I think we as people, or maybe as Americans, or maybe as me, I think there's a way that we, or at least I grew up where we are really in a career sense, but in those soft skill sense are the things that I uh was able to pull off But like in the same way that I'm pushing back on you in these ways that I feel like are like very sweetly like if you just said to me we sat down, hey, I just would love to like to talk about you look nice today for an hour.

Making uh in a full-on assumption. um the comedy magic act. Split up. What is a scary traumatic thing and who you're supposed to blame? And although uh the meth character hi his I I I found his I I don't know, I found the meth uh not profit off of I mean yeah but benefit off of everyone else's suffering and then like experiencing the consequences uh of that Cracker has been like, oh, the timeline doesn't make any sense. Yeah, Benedict Wong who's just kind of trying to keep everybody calm. What? Well, because the the tab was loading. The what wouldn't you consider that her face or at least what we find her as her No, I think it's Alex. fucking with people or I mean I guess I don't know what did you you clearly interpreted the jump scares and like what was happening differently.

uh j that general sort of not a log line that summary that plot summary leads to to me such interesting like of uh the leftovers. Um, you know, grief, I think you could think of is the the emotional, the weight that we bear after a loss. Like what have you found out that you know your your husband disappeared and your two kids disappeared? Because she's she's a she's a uh she's a legacy. Does that make you no longer have grief and no longer have loss? uh twelve, thirteen. We don't know that that was the last time we'll ever see that person again or see that person in that place. But we discovered later that was you know him. I don't know. Uh I don't know if it's my favorite episode, but it's certainly the payoff episode.

How the way that How could you possibly know what I was talking about? Your shit? I think that answers my question. But before that there were just s uh it's not public, but he would do, you know, s small shows. Uh I don't know. different types of uh not just genres, but full-on types of media and mediums And their path to how they got where they are would be different. moment after moment where he talks about the weird f fragility and happenstance of a professional life and Which is becoming one of my favorite uh I guess I would say panel I was gonna say game shows, but uh I guess I'm gonna show you. Can have an effect later on, for better or for worse. Have you ever seen the the Kiam Peel Sketch Continental Breakfast?

I mean just people look at it. You know, 'cause that's the time you want to turn it into a story. don't make it on to most resumes in any kind of A or or whatever you call it. What if all of those other people's expectations about you staying on the good line um became more internalized than you realized? Thinking about the what uh writing hot takes or something? The I really want to go to Chris Fleming show. It's a kind of magic. Gigantic trauma is completely different than of all the kids. Uh they might be successful, but it doesn't feel as organic as this, even though uh as Zach No. The oh I guess I was thinking because she caused that. And uh there's been a lot of changes. When society breaks down, weird shit happens.

But then you start to realize, oh man, it's hard. You see when you see like when Kevin like hits the family portrait with his elbow and shatters the glass right above his wife's face, you're not gonna pick up on the fact of who that is and that that's a character you've already met. People like Matt are walking around trying to get you to realize it's because of someone you love's fault. kind of understand it. If Flannery O'Connor sinks, what does that What? A couple days before the event happened, we get to see this community. Uh so we learn that Kevin's wife was a therapist. I really now am wondering if I do want a truck made of children. Oh what it Oh gosh. I think that's a good thing. started his career in uh in making any media in comedy and that became D started there or is that when you became familiar with him?

There's a I promise. But uh, because you like you've got to be able to do those things. Uh y you and uh you talk a lot about being a bus boy and working at McDonald's and not in a uh romanticizing like weird. Hmm. not hopefully not being too sweaty, but being a a fan of something or learning about something. And the character I don't want to spoil it, but the that's not important. What? I I don't know. I why you look nice today is funny, but also uh yeah, other it d things that are funny. That's I mean that's that that's that's all. When I might need I might need to go to some kind of a like an institution after this episode. It's so much fun, which is why I say it's not a com it's not comedy horror, but why that person disappeared.

Mm-hmm. Is he in duck soup? Just saying. You know I don't do anything but the show when I'm doing the show. But uh the ninth sixth, I'm pretty sure yeah, yeah, yeah. Yes, yes, except are you trying to convince me that this is not a bit by continuing to act like you are not sure what's happening right now? Did do you want me to do what can I should I analyze you? So that it can turn into a story. Like you said, hopefully recognizing the weird skills that you're picking up that you don't necessarily know are valuable. I mean it is uh those for weapons. Oh, why do you think the way it's told is fascinating? How do I I fix this? I uh you know, it it's presented as this big mystery, and you're gonna find out what the y Uh not hiding, but canily not connecting the fact that four of the characters you've met already used to be a very happy nuclear family.

Oh, is that what you're talking about? I mean uh you started in music. But but I like talk you as you know, the part that does invigorate and buoy me is talking about the process and the difficulty and the like the little things, the unexpected Oh, um that wholesomeness I guess. I the zeal that we're supposed to have as young people. There are yeah, it's hard to remember because there I should be. Like, I mean I uh part of Ar Archer's li I think why k I keep gravitating toward Archer Josh Brolin's character. I think that I I feel like in my head this is r I'm not gonna look this up. We found out a lot about how we live and how we love and how we work and how we survive, how we thrive, how we perform.

I'm not regretful. It is officially my favorite TV show. And remember, oh, don't you love how you discover that Josh Brolin's kid's kind of a dick? Uh uh so hey everybody. I I'm not really sure where we're going, but like I'm just trying to say like it's you know moments snap together like magnets. What do you mean what are you trying to do? The skills or not the skills, I'm saying using that word too much, but being aware of what you're capable of in abstract ways. why or how you're a fan of something. I forgot about him. Oh he puts a Japanese fella in that. Yeah. Okay, alright. I loved that book. You say I'd like to leave in a minute and a half. Okay, now I will look it up. But it seeing the just the layers of uh uh of tragedy and trauma that she causes it like you you expect her to be the one kind of like cursing every single person, which I mean, in some cases she does with Benedict wong, but it Like I don't know.

And everything was booked and um then the thing happened in March. I love Lil Ray. The same way I felt like every chapter of the weapons was really, really different. What am I supposed to do with that? And you took a photo and I want to ask who it's for. Uh I do think I do think stuff like that is interesting. Then I But I like the skills I like the skills talk. I have a No, no, you've got to start proving these things because you are Yes. It's kind of magic. I love it so so much. I at least feel uh tragedies in different ways from different perspectives. His name's Kevin Garvey. When we by When we meet Ant Gladys in the office in the second act. And uh I think it's true for all those things.

Okay, no, that's a really good example. I just along with watching Zack Krager's stuff over the years and then yeah And I just it was like, oh it's so good. And then it it ends up being, oh, his opportunities are like all all of the opportunities he um encounters, like being able to uh basically And that's a different kind of complexity and a different kind of grief. So you know like the you know like the the the when uh the Christopher Eccleston doctor. So you get grief and you got loss. The the theme in the leftovers to me at least through part of it is like uh it's almost like COVID A lot of people became well, where do you think a lot of people became familiar with your work? And all along the way, you gather all of these little abilities, maybe even sometimes tricks.

Hello. I think I c I c actually I think I can speak for Alex. Who's the actor? Just cause I think nope nope was a swing. There was a lot of people coming to you saying you don't need to worry, nor should you worry about it. I'm not asking you to about it. I love you. But he's very angry. Key Luke, you know Key Luke, he was great on Kung Fu. It's very, very well done. I mean that's yeah, that's what earned this a place on that list was and then of course revisiting that later. And you've been listening to you've been listening to and reading a lot of comedy. I'm just saying all of that because I'm not trying to make this into some like Horatio Alger or story or whatever any kind of thing, but like Like Marilyn is very happy talking about the process in general.

I think we get we get so I and again it's it's always difficult for me not to take this away from stuff like trauma and the way that we treat young people in general, unfortunately. I don't know. How could Patty feel that whatever event nobody understands was about to happen? I think he was really good at at editing that stuff. The um you liked uh the weapons movie a lot, you saw it twice, and then uh you liked Zach Krager, he was in this comedy thing you liked a lot. I would talk about you look nice today all day long, as long as we're allowed to talk about it for what it is, which is a thing we did that I thought was funny. Daddy speaks. And people th there's again that that my word of the month, I think, maladaptive.

Yeah, the people in white. Yeah. It's one of those movies that can't be spoiled for a variety of reasons. And how is it related to a child star that saw uh saw a chimp killed on set What? No, when you say that I know you going cold. And, you know, it's just it's weird. Then it would have been good. But it's not j an origin th that's the problem with like an origin story of the Paul McCartney making out with his guitar and why You win the contest, you sing the song, you do the thing, you follow the rules, you keep your elbows off the table. The TED talks that frustrate you and a a lot of people. What's his name, Kevin? They were in field of dreams together. Because COVID is a hot topic and people get really worked up about it.

Like you've you you figure out like how you are going to, as you like to say, get over this trauma. He works for me. I have I have concerns. But I, you know, I want when you say start with, I don't know, but like people will you'll take a job. Like even though we and we failed and no one sees it. I uh uh I don't know. His would I lie to you segments are so you know that Fuji Nine does it all for you. Didn't we learn a lot about ourselves as a society during COVID? That's part of a grand tradition and a phrase that we're not gonna use here. Being witness to your dad Keith David riding a horse and dying because a nickel fell out of the sky and embedded in his brain. Pretty good. You didn't find weapons funny?

He's uh seems like a talented guy. I don't think that appeals to people. Getting over the way you think about trauma. And it's when, after having watched over eight hours of this show, we not only get to see this family, Like it's gonna be really helpful that you have those organizational skills from an animation. I mean ho horror sorry comedy people going into something. Well, if you're gonna have a tape of something, wouldn't you want it to be marked clearly? So I'm not here to drag somebody who did a TEDx talk. He's got a rap. Absolutely. And it isn't until a shocking event like what happened at 217 A. What is happening? I uh I am this good for the show? Something I not you, but it's something I wonder like, okay, Alex Horn, creator of uh Taskmaster.

He went to film went to new college, then went to uh film school at Ringling and uh then uh he ended up doing some editing work but he also ended up writing a uh several books in editions. And I think what the guy says is something like that's an like an onion saying he wants to take care of a star. You've put it on this pedestal. I M I M This movie is told uh in a lot of interesting ways. Yeah, and I I just So that's it. Who's the actor who was in Bull Durham? And then the brother is off taking care of these sex-trafficked women at a cult, getting them candy and stuff. I don't regret is stupid, guys. But what it really comes down to is, hey, you know what? Lil Ray in that first one. I I I think the left o no, I know that the leftovers and the weapons But one of the things he talks about is what did he say?

Did own for my friend Steve, who eventually became an animator and I think worked at Pixar. That goes for every kind of job. Feels like a more recent thing for a lot of people. Oh boy, because I was about to answer a question. I think I think I became known to some people through work I did on 43folders. But but you know, it's it sounds a little bit like w it's restricted just to uh uh entertainment. I'm one of those people who's like, oh, isn't it cool that sk kids are still doing that? Why you liked weapons and why it's a good idea. In so many ways, The Leftovers is a show about grief and a show about loss. And so he knows where the he and Paradin really know where this show is going. She just keeps it going.

It's it's outside. I'm okay, I'm gonna do it. And I might have be com probably am completely wrong. Yeah, yeah, yeah, we could talk about that for sure. That's not funny. Maybe Zach Krager. Uh uh spo I'll continue not to talk about it because I wouldn't want to s spoil that for you since you're never gonna watch it. No. I I don't think it benefits too much from overintellectualization. Oh wait, wait. And then But I had a whole life before that. The one in I think the one the one I know is Diamond. Yeah, music. Well, um my f I barely got into college and my first semester in college, I organized He Um I think we're so hard on ourselves and it doesn't really help. And I also hoped that you mentioned because I find all the bio thing.

I I I uh perhaps. And it's one of the funniest things I've ever heard. Now Daddy speaks. You said it once when I and then I said Kevin Costner, yes. Yeah, well but so uh like when you when we see Aunt Gladys, it's like oh we're gonna find out or rather I mean I guess when we see Aunt Gladys's face in the dreams But what if you discover that somebody had like a same-sex lover that you never learned about? You know, you think about the great act that's and uh she's like so and she's she's in this terrible relationship, terrible relationship with her husband. It's fine. It's like Liv Tyler, you know, eventually joins up. He's very angry at Justine in that first scene where only a fan probably would notice that it's James Brolin who's yelling at the back of this woman's head.

I'd recently started a new tracked list of this is pretty obscure and yet I don't know if it's not obscure enough. You take a snapshot of somebody at that moment in your career and I think it's kind of it is interesting to me to then go back and say like would you could you put together the moments Like people who go into um civil engineering um may not may not have gotten into it because they're quote a fan of somebody. Yeah yes. Amy Madigan's really good and there's gonna be another prequel movie about it and so what? Yes. Well, I won I won't take you all into the Taskmaster stuff, but that's actually to me a really interesting example because he strikes me as uh uh like he was probably a nerd I think he was a nerd.

Comedy horror? You know, the resumes that are impressive are the ones with colleges that people are envious they didn't get into. No, I don't. I just said I sent it to that channel. Or you're the uh what's his name, James Wong character who's just trying to Uh TV Kevin, yeah. And like like like Josh Browne is saying, like, it can't be a coincidence that this happened, these were all in this the only people who could know anything about this What's the elevator? Am I supposed to ask about uh what past means? And I have to say, uh, I remember at the time we would record these episodes and um That's where I started. And that I really I'm very I've had kind of a snoot full of that from people of my age.

What do you what do you what what do you want to know? No, what's his name? A nickel killed Keith David title. Oh. I grew up on NASH, man. She says, well, I just something's gonna happen. Is that is that the is that a famous story from a famous person? I am saying that there are funny funny moments in weapons. It's fine. And the implication being if you keep walking this one straight path, maybe you won't go to hell, but we're not even sure. What a display. And then season two, and again, by Damon Lindelof and Tom Perada, the guy who wrote the book, that there wasn't a second book, but there was the second season, which is where Perada is Yeah, exactly. And, you know, it's all it's like one of the last, you know, big even then you'd go like, right?

Do you know what I'm saying? Keith, I mean like if you watch the no dude if you watch the no small parts uh on Keith David or any of those wonderful features, he's like James Hong. So the first thing he ever did was the successful uh comedy group um why is kids you know Is it though? It is Kevin Costner. And um but then she finds out that her husband had been having an affair with their daughter's preschool teacher. The guilty remnant get their ass kicked because they they basically try to keep getting getting everybody to realize it's their fault. And she throws every time she goes home, she throws the full boxes she bought last time away and refills everything. Like Nora with her paper towel, half a paper towel left on the roll at her house where her kids died.

Although my my favorite TV show I actually like to watch over and over is Game of Thrones. I learned um a pretty long time ago in trying to be funny in front of people that Was I born in the wild bath of music? And I I just don't want to be held up as any kind of an example of anything if I could avoid it. And like when I visited him in San Francisco in ninety seven in his room he had like these big uh everything he recorded. Or like Loki's line about how the ant or the boot has no quarrel with the ant. And they say, is that from Duck Soup? It's like it's like walking down the street and calling a fat person fat. Who's dances with wolves? Amy Ma the way Amy Madigan plays the antagonist of this horror movie.

You said I was right, which I think you're going to repeat. It's creepy. I think I was a junior or senior. Like it's I'd rather I I think it's fun to talk about fun. I mean that's that's the way people talk now, so I just did it in that voice. And I'm like, I feel I don't know. I don't know. And I'll bring this back in a minute. But we learned a lot about like, oh wow, we depend a lot on just in time deliveries and we depend a lot really on international trade. Do you think that ironically enough, that proximity, could that reveal things about your relationship you'd never had to look at before? But you heard me in a minute ago probably getting a little bit emotional about that. Do you know that, right?

Which is a dad noise. He thinks it's it's a hilariously fancy thing that he's got uh, you know, he's got all these i just him going through It's fine. Uh that, you know, about like, yeah, looking at looking at stuff you could make decisions about in a certain way. I don't. No one knows why they left. He can remove your burden. It's all the stuff we've got to deal with now in this new context. I think he's terrific. Wait, are you talking about the supermarket or the parking lot? I bet she's at a therapist because she thinks thoughts like that I want him to have a bunch of kids that are just like, hello, I am leaving this alley, but we can't have everything we want Um there's I I get I get really not allergic, but I get a little bit edgy when people talk about how something started.

Because then the visual of the snapping uh happens, but it's just magic. The it's told out it's told out of sequence, but it's told from the points of view of uh several different characters. You can have things in a movie that are just a bummer. You want to talk about you nice today? Now, I don't know. I still enjoyed the Instead of saying yes and they just snap at people. Whereas if you succeed at hitting the doing this one thing, the little movie continues and if it doesn't, it's over. I'm I don't think there has to be a bad guy in this stuff. Dugga dugga dugga dugga. Some theories involve geography. It'll be fine. And do you think people didn't treat little girls like shit before phones? I get how you could fucking we could be Steven, little Steven, the little little guy.

And uh the leftovers, it has d uh none of that. There's a lot of HBO shows, and I I understand HBO is just the channel it's on. Yeah. And like, yeah, it's a story, but you know, one problem is for a long time I don't know. Like I'm much happier talking about that than like me standing up here like I'm being interviewed by We gotta reopen. I'm not trying to make it political, but like I I don't love talking about things. So we were gonna get to do the things we like in the greater LA area that we like to do as a family. Like somebody who obviously loves genre fiction, you know? It's a rhetorical question because people who act like they get over trauma are don't understand trauma. Hey, hey hey, real quick.

I don't think you were because you refused to make any attempt to figure out what this man's last name was, even though I was struggling mightily. I don't even think you have to buy into the themes of this movie. But I also am a human being. Um I'm trying to uh join these calls politely to make sure there's n nothing playing in the background. Hmm. Well, I'm a fan. I can then I get to brag a little bit. There were also times we're like, hey, that's really cool. It's a really traumatic movie to watch multiple times. Have you made your point yet about Amy Madigan? But like, you know, the thing that you realize from the jump in leftovers is that there was an event, something happened, 3% of the world's population disappeared.

Well no, I love them all. You could do the voice? I'm gonna bring back David Lindelof had this experience She knew it was going to happen before it happens. Should we talk about mechanics? Flow truck made of children. Give you something like kind of a kind of a a laser sight to follow. And you think about what people write on the back of their eight by ten. No, Jor Jordan. Because if people were v vulnerable in not talking about their their failures, but what what have you what would you get taught in the last five years that made a big difference? It's more like a c it's like it's like a b series of beautiful cutscenes with tiny bits of interaction, and you get to keep watching the movie as long as you shoot the laser at the right part of the rock.

We both really suggest that you watch this movie Weapons. Assume that everything I say will spoil this movie and you'll hate me forever. Kevin, what's his name? And so unsurprisingly, this is a show. I think there's a whole Ray Fines film about this from the nineties. She's had three members of her family almost unheard of. Or whatever. It's weird. Uh and what's funny is those episodes are like a half hour long. I don't know if he wrote and directed this. Yeah, say whatever you want to say about weapons. I I I I I I I I feel dumb that I I have to say this, not because of anybody else, but because of myself. It's the actor that was in Field of Dreams. Yeah. That's where you started. I mean I don't know.

And I think they need to with they'd want to talk about their uh their lucky failures. You have already learned to self-edit. You minimize so many of the things that aren't complete uh successes in the eyes of your betters. And uh that uh d I didn't even clock that uh uh mostly because uh And like you can see Jill. Okay, so I'm just about done with that part. So I feel better. When you say that though, um how mu how what what should I do with that? It just seems weird to like have a retrospective about my career when I haven't really had much of a career. Just Yeah, yeah, I understand. I uh I also like how there is those are my most of my assertive comments about the You've been excited to talk about this movie for almost a month.

Because that was my favorite ride as a kid. I got a much more harrowing thing from adolescence where if you fix the problem of kids and phones, you still have a real big problem with just kids and parents. Mmm You sure you're up for this, bud? Which part? I think I understand. I think that stuff is most especially interesting. Oh God, wonderful line in Oh oh in um in Alien Earth. Let's just be very clear. Stop regretting. We don't know what's impossible. The same way you can watch Adolescent say, like, there's a bunch of people, including people who made the show. I have concerns because now if you count the other well we're we're three minutes, four minutes into it. You know, I I like I man, I would not thrive in that environment.

Um but Jordan Peel and Zach Krager, I do know what you're talking about with the Key and Peel like musical And that there's there are benefits to keeping your head on a swivel about the next interesting thing you can do. I think the skills talk is very positive. And I think if you thought about it for a minute, you'd know what what that means for you. I really see it as like playing Dragon's Lair. And I just hear it in my head, the same way I hear Marceline going, mute. Not you, the list. But was was she his wife? And it's fucking, it's Damon Lindelof. And stuff like in the first episode, like, oh God, poor Margaret Quali. So his point of view is more that these people were sinners Season two, the credits change, and you get that Irish Demet.

And I I th th this this what they manage I don't oversell it. And she's like, no, no, no. Um, which is the first thing was ever selling the show. That just that just makes me uncomfortable is all. Kevin. Like that there's something so moving about that scene. Um, you get these cult figures. We gotta take off these masks. Can you imagine couples out there who never in a million like they for they've been together forever. Like they're not gonna shut that down. Good, good. But just like Alex Horn gets started Like, you know, we can we can we can la we can uh lie to others, but we oughtn't lie to ourselves. But the characters the the the sort of like the mentor sort of character says, Well, what do you what do you think is gonna happen here?

Like on the other hand, having said all that and bitching about all of that, about being raised in a Alright, I've I've done didn't done the thing. So the the book, The Leftovers, is just the what covers the first easy. It would just come up in a different way and probably different uniforms. But like I think there's, you know, there's something about that ability to pull that off. I've seen a lot of Asian people play a lot of Asian people. I do, yes. There's a c there's a kind of ghoulish appeal in in the way people end up talking about things. And even though we did what we considered good science here, we're not going to share it because it's not the result that we wanted. You've made it John you've made it Paul.

I've said it to you numerous times, and you still you're so you're so it's so difficult for me to understand you The kids are burning themselves with forks because they like they don't know. Watch her play herself two years younger with braces. You mean okay, like the I don't uh this is so weird to talk about. No. Understanding the tone of the Shining, or understanding the tone of, you know, those kinds of movies that really creep you out. Or or like whatever. Uh uh show goes by fast and you gotta listen. Every arc addresses a different aspect. What's his name? Because he's a Baptist minister, the doctor, uh, Christopher Eccleston, but he also is there to fuck people up with being told. Um we were g really hoping to do a second trip to Disneyland and we had everything booked.

Okay, smash cut. You never had the life you thought you had before 217 a. Do you remember the last line of weapons? Um how's it going, Alex? Fantastic. I think there were very funny moments in weapons movies. Like there are there are buttholes and abusers in every field. Like with my kid, every time my kid has something that goes well Can I just do a spoiler spoiler warning? But like to me these these are very these are interesting, related, at least, if not connected, related in an interesting way. Sometimes it's really not the butt about the mystery and about the box. We are talking uh fine. And uh as much as I I think he provided, you know, well over his share of the funniness on air It's like an episode of Faulty Towers where you're like, oh my god, I can't believe how many laughs were in that forty minutes, and it makes me happy.

I don't want to sound pretentious, but like it's just it's so easy to get some middle aged guy to fucking talk about his life like he's somebody important. You just said it. What's the famous actor? Um I know that, but who who pla what did she ever play his wife? Well elevator is just a notion uh the Todd and I, my friend Todd and I have batted around of That's also made of gold? Is this good Well I don't understand why people say things like that. They want to keep their cool pool cleaning business successful. Thank you, the prologue of um here um just just just to make sure we've really weeded you bitches out When you don't have answers, what happens? Yes. We can do that? Well what would you say?

What do you um hey, talk about the thing you want to talk about? Right. But anyway, but he knew that that famous guy, uh, you know, uh with the wig. And that's stuff that really interests me and I'm much more comfortable talking about. And it was this really cool uh Dungeons <unk> Dragons style uh arcade game with the most amazing graphics you've ever seen. Like in my in my case, just yeah, I'm a fan of the interesting Yes, it's a it's a movie that's good, but it's a movie that's good in ways that I uh uh I don't know, I don't really uh get to uh In my head, in addition to whatever things that she has done in her life, I just think of her as being um the sensible and very attractive wife of of um Jordan Peel has that like somebody like Edgar Wright.

And biz uh how a ch person actually learned It's you're you I think you're talking about a very interest I think, and you can tell me. So if you want some guilty remnant posters, just let me know. Uh okay. Isn't it funny how I've somehow turned managed to turn this right into another one of my authority things? And you say, I don't know. I just think the implementation I know that sounds like slight praise, but i as with Jordan Peel with I don't know what my favorite is. No. Played the unsighted uh teacher on uh and then he was also on Battle of the Planets. Um Okay, so here's my you know what? And he was like the go-to in a nutshell guy for s a lot of their video uh a lot of So like by the time like we were both out of college, both he was out of school like m my VHS tapes that I would record Seinfeld and the Simpsons on were just a mess and they were all over the place.

That to me is super interesting. Yes. The um what do you call them like vignettes? In uh like the the chapters weaving together and the timeline weaving together uh works in a way that I think a lot of directors try but don't Um I'm re-watching uh the Leftovers right now and I'm into season two of the Leftovers and um I And perhaps they will begin to think, this happened because of something I did on the day of the event. Should we go straight into the challenge? That's super helpful. How Steve Martin, you know, was uh was a m he'd be been a magician as a kid at Disneyland. It's a kind of magic. Kevin. Like I don't mean literally her face, although it's in class, second chance. The little daily kid noises you have when they're all excited to leave for school.

Did a you know Donald O'Connor in Singing in the Rain, which is I think one of the great movies still. Because he was talking about magic, you know, mag doing magic, doing magic, magic shows, magic effects, what we used to call magic tricks. Probably, but I do not have to be able to do that. How about how about that? What are we talking about? Is that right? I think the timeline is really uh visceral, especially even though there's different characters I'm just as God made me. It's a really well it's a really good noise. Good morning, Alex. Is this O I imagine he did. Is like getting good at abandoning things at the right moment is uh is certainly a skill in life. There are uh, you know what I mean, all those kinds of things.

My wife tells me that the novel covers what's in season one. And yet, it would be inhuman and undeadly of me not to feel a pang in my heart for the last time. That was in my thirties. What the fuck do you want to know? I I don't want to be interviewed about my life as a biography and when I made it. I'm not saying learning to write things on tape. I don't think it's it advice or like h hot tips and tricks to talk about The uh challenge this week uh isn't really a challenge, it's just that Alex and I have both recently watched a movie called Weapons, and I think we're gonna talk about it. Uh Kevin. Some theories involve This wait, this isn't just for me. It doesn't. I mean I don't think he was alive when he made duck soup.

It's like as as much you can criticize me as much as you want, people, for interrupting and stuff, but I'm listening so fucking hard to what the other person is doing. And I'm just trying to say like, well, people make nice things for you and then you can enjoy that. Yeah, because uh this week's challenge Dig Dug was And uh so, you know, I I'm I'm You got up and did talent show and that was really funny. What it what it was that weird question? I'll say that with confidence. Simon from Somerset and Marcy from Somerset. Uh Kathy Geis, um from uh from 30 Rock. We gotta get everything open again. I can tell that something is about to happen Like there's this, I can feel like a certainty, a weight.

Um, you up for this today? I I want to talk about, well, whatever you want to talk about, but It's it seems to me. Uh I guess. The same way, uh I think There's nothing like this has ever happened in the history of uh the the world. Fa fascinating, as you would say. So like, you know, although you know parallel What what they had, or in Merlin's terms, what they thought they had on that day, and we learn the setup. Or as I like to say, yeah, really sometimes related, sometimes connected. Oh, I've I've been watching and reading a lot of comedy And the director, uh Zach Krager One of my friends who ended up writing writing um You know so what do you do? I I'm I'm really glad you recommended it to me.

But there's a there's kind of like what I would call maybe a prologue. Maladaptive approaches to dealing with that grief and loss in the world. Like what happens when you can't make new babies in the world? Um no, I don't know. And the comedic beats going along with horror beats seems like it is becoming a theme And it's like, well, you know, a classic resume that sits in a pile Yeah, yeah. Kevin. I couldn't help but bring in leftovers because it's on my mind. Yeah. And this uh in leftovers, I mean th I think the story You've not made a single usable noise since we started recording I don't know. Like you're allowed to do that because they're fat. You know? I mean, Jill's family was broken up It's uh a couple famous musicians.

Well you could be a better fan if you knew what was on those tapes and were able to actually do something with them. You have already learned all the ways to minimize Yeah, the James Brolin just I think his arc hit I'm not talking about it politically. But there's a long tradition of making sure the women and girls stay in this certain kind of way by boys and men treating them in this particular way Jack cash fine. This is Do by Friday, a weekly challenge podcast with Alex Cox and Roland Mann. It's true. But what uh I think the people that you maybe are talking about are the ones writing like still Why do I think the way it's told is fascinating? Amy Madigan plays this witch Um I mean I I You know what?

What have you been up to? But uh re listening And that's how it started. Surprise, surprise. It was just a dumb example. That's that's smart. Um I understand. What would ha I can't watch duck soup now because I didn't watch it because I figured because I assumed it wouldn't be funny. Forget it. That movie. And it's like, oh yeah, that does make a ton of sense. It could again things like negotiation, things like if you like time management is a really gentle way to put it. No, um the Is is this do you wanna give did you want to talk about Gregor? She turned around and when she turned back, her entire family was gone. And then every hour, every day, it kept getting worse and worse and worse. We don't know what's happening for the last time.

Just you're you're you you are you have you have on two occasions now gotten very close to saying Nom nom nom nom nom nom Oh you mean m oh you took my whole uh Luck favors the well prepared. And that's that's what we're gonna do, right? I think it's fun to it's it's comedy to talk about comedy. Oh I see. You know, like I have to protect my kid, but when it is just something so out of the construct of It's just a story really well told Is he the guy sorry, this is just for my uh okay, yeah. And it's the dumbest thing in the world. The as the the term the term we we mu y we hear now, I think it started Dragon's Lair was a was a uh an um was a game that was a very very amazing I think Don Bluth did the animation, but it was this amazing game.

And like, that's just that's just so much horseshit. Is she the wife? His name is Kevin. Yes. And they lied to you and they were a bad person. Like it revealed a lot of problems, not just in our infrastructure, not just in our, you know But here's one of the things in that. I n I don't think about it. It's not like you ask people like, you know, how did you get your start in fast food? I don't know. And then of course, you know, as uh as you might see if you choose to watch Continental Breakfast, which is a very funny sketch, like it's such What what do I have to tell you? It's interesting d d doing a thing and uh You said it the one time that it helped me get it, but up till then you've been absolutely useless.

The thing the thing with the leftovers Uh and so we're in part way into season two right now, which is quite a Well we try to come up with answers. But we got what if what's what's the problem? You don't you don't want to become morbid about this. The supermar Oh shit. What does that mean? So like I mean, I don't know, how how does Jordan Peel go from the uh Now I think it is a little bit about you because I wonder if you would feel less I love doing this show, but my God. So it's not a it's if if if you've been if you spent your entire life hoping you get rewarded for staying on the line It's hard when things are built up like that for sure. I watching him flail Not everything has to be. Because now I I recognize that in retrospect as absolutely the last time I ever could have done anything like that with my kid What?

You know, it's like I can ride a horse and I can speak French and I can stage fight and stuff like that. I just don't think it's gonna be interesting to our listeners for me to talk about something I did for a few months years ago. And if and I don't know, by the second chapter I didn't really ca Yes. Yes. Because it is. I am a part of spoiler culture because I don't wanna mm-hmm. Pew pew pew pew What would please you? I want to say maybe Field of Dreams. Uh the Like the ha the famous JJ and Damon thing, the mystery box. No. Wasn't that kind of awesome? I'm sorry, so okay, sorry. And I remember at the time thinking, Oh man, that episode we should have I thought we it was longer and but like on the other hand I'm always like, oh my God, that was But he uh one time I I very lately assisted him with a independent study project he did on stop motion animation.

Why didn't I make you laugh like a clown? How do you not re every time I every time I hear it's kind it's a kind of magic now, I I instantly for the rest of my life will think of that scene. To find out, like, you've seen some of it, right? Or that that person had been stealing money or, you know, whatever it is. It's not political. Not whatever, but like you not believed for like a week. And I am out of water. Every other time in her life that she thought something was about to happen, I'll bet it didn't happen. Okay. So like, and it's got Regina King The the the truth is though, like Right now we're talking about one person. So the cop the cop you felt really different with the cop one versus the drug guy one?

And it's a stunning episode, not least because I don't I I And that's just one kind of skill. Like I just That's that is completely unteachable and From now on, I want you writing things like that down when you hope it Yes. Uh that's all you really need to know. Just in the case of, let's just say it, it's it's Nora Durst, the character played by Carrie Kuhn. The only person most people have heard of who had more people disappear from the family is this guy who wrote a really shitty book about the event. If you remember Dance of Dragons, that was the second like there's so many episodes like that. My favorite TV show of all time is The Leftovers, which is not a surprise. Because I think it means poop.

Do you agree? It's incontrovertibly a show about grief and loss. He learned a lot from making lost. Well, boy, didn't we learn a lot? I won't talk about it. It's that kind of stuff is like And um that's just one why are we why'd we stop here? But the the Cam the wonderful Campeel sketch, uh Continental Breakfast. Now we've we've we've established you can take it anywhere you want at this point. Yeah, Madeline's dad used to make that noise. Yeah, no, I'm not gonna forget it. And I'll continue just to say like But anyways, he um he was this guy he always had a Sharpie and labels and he was always labeling all of his tapes All the stuff of like making that is um Okay, say what you're gonna say. I couldn't kind of I mean are we supposed to know at the beginning that that is Alex?

Well that doesn't help me. And no matter what I do to try to be support I end up thwarted. It just complicates That was COVID and that sucked and people died. M. And out, definitely on the list. Yeah. Talking about like the connection. And I think that Uh and yeah, as uh me as well. That's a shame. And by disappearing Okay. It's cool. That's that's what I've just been examining. Um I'm sorry this isn't more interesting, but this was what it is. No, because that's the problem. And then you know, j just the teacher, uh Julie Garner's character What was his name? But you know, and we got we got some of that vibe in the late nineties, you know, with the millennium and Y2K stuff coming up, but like Like, who knows?

Well, I'm almost done with the leftovers. We got real fix it on the box because we can understand that shape. This is really cynical to say, but I think you can enjoy this movie on a pure That could be the whole uh I'd love to talk about that, but I don't want to take you off your point. Uh is that funnier than a truck made of children? Should we st should we start over? Because if you think about it, it means r two really different things. Um, hello I'm resistant to trying to find somebody who we can look at as the Looney Tunes, the person that made everything bad Like whatever. Is that correct? So don't put me in that position. And uh this this whole town has experienced the trauma It's specifically Alex.

And then pop boom, it's what two years, I think it's two years later is when the show that we're watching starts. You know, Keith David is the greatest of all the elevators. Um I just like thinking about that. I it's it's weird because okay, here's here's one thing I'm avoiding. Um like that is so brilliantly written, performed, and especially edited with the music. It was the was the driver of his career. I'm not saying I was without support, but I wouldn't want you on stage wearing a wig and trying to be funny all the time. It is fascinating. Like we when uh we find out that, oh, it is the kids Okay. I'm talking about it even personally. And You could make adolescence and say, oh, that's a cautionary tale about kids and phones.

And not the Asian people you're thinking of. I mean, it fucked my kid up fifty times more, but we we watched it as recently as I I want to say last month or so, re-watched it. I don't want to tell you. But like Tony used to record Because your metric for success for your life is how well you stayed on the line. So your resume makes you look like whatever, I don't know fucking Cindy Cindy Lou who like you're the good girl. How he uses an Indian wind instrument to put a mirror on. She must have played. I've never seen that show. I uh what other Uh two people sitting on the couch from the first jump scare? I um you like her, it sounds like It's a good thing. Playing herself like a year and a half or two years younger with braces.

I I can't tell if this is a bit because you sound like you're not up for this today. Keep keep going. Hold on. The mmm We're gonna have another interview where Merlin talks about something Alex remembers that he did. Which I'm really glad I watched it. What doctor was he? And I just don't know it yet. that somebody like Archer, in a similar way to Carrie Kuhn is as uh Nora Durst in um I I am I am a bit more. I mean if you want to talk about it, I do think it's a very interesting topic. Uh okay, never mind. It used to be a really, really big thing to have to update your resume and get your resume out quickly. You know the things that Did you ever watch that one? Hey everybody. And then uh it s sometimes you just can't.

We could we could we could make this a challenge for maybe even like a a few weeks down the road if we wanted to watch the watch the pilot of Leftovers. Hmm. I think all of these sorts of uh origin stories and like, you know You're determined to make this a little about me, aren't you? What what if the way that you are right now It's imagined So, you know, pretty similar setup in a lot of ways. What's Margaret Crawley, the best best crier in the business? Or, you know, go to this dumbledore shit. Um You know? That's or the laundromat. Like you can watch that scene, I think, and as even like a not particularly native This guy who makes these great movies like Barbarian and Weapons, which are real scary, uh it's wild that he started in comedy kinda, right?

Do you know what I'm saying? And uh I don't know, it seems like everybody's the description of how how each of those people is great at that would be different. Like when you were nine years old, or you were say, well, say nine. So it's it's your potentially because I I really like the movie Doc Supino have talked about it a lot and begged you to watch it for years. Uh uh h just uh how terrible all of us are at different things Um, but I'm trying to do this gently, but And I still, in a weird way, am very emotional about it. m. Read a book. The Watchmen, it has none of that. It's a shame you missed that. And you could hurt their feelings by saying that. But like We also, let's go real micro. They didn't make the show, per se.

Yes. But now that's the thing. I'm just trying to find something you want to talk about. His anxiety will overwhelm him in ways very few find amusing. Um I uh What are you talking about? R right. Okay, but so wait, so you sa you think weapons was a surpassingly funny movie? Then let's do do like uh c career ski skilly things almost I think some people uh s probably some people would say it's vain for you to spend any time on that I I I get all of that. Yes, it is a show about grief. Everybody goes fucking crazy and you get cults. And so you get groups like the Guilty Remnant. Right? But uh when a comedian gets We are what we frequently do, blah blah blah. I'm here to try and get other people excited about what they can do.

And because I think it is related here, where there is on the one hand there's the theme I don't care. Yeah, yeah. The same way I didn't know what Um I'm not talking about my career. What did you really want to talk about with me? Like there's certain there's things that I can just Oh Kevin Costner Amy Madigan. Um they And it's not just because it's a funny guy doing it, but like there's just something about And Patty's in there talking to her that day because she's like And you see how each of these characters, now here's the thing. What would you say was like the start of music? Just the other day I I It's like skyriding on a slip and slide Um Weapons by Zach Somebody, 2025. It's not like she is out there in the first act You never had the life you thought you had in March of But As with You are muted.

Yeah, for sure. Once he became like a video guy, that became essential. Okay. It's like that's kind of a good story. Yeah. And like, what if you were able to go like Yeah, because Forget I said it's fascinating. Thank you. Uh Fan de siècle. Was he eight, nine? And Alex, you know me well enough. Okay, so it's a person versus an idea. That it's so special to me. Doesn't it seem like a little bit of a bully? Oh, ditto Ricky J. Because that also helps me find uh new things that I enjoy. I'm a fan of you look nice today. Because here's the problem. What's his name? Anyway, so And we would get to go to, you know, at that point, what's my kid at that point? It's March of 2020. No, I'm I'm just gonna buy you a box of commas It's not i it's every little bit.

In in horror movies. I think they need to be really candid about it and not just try to sing some song about how they never That's the biggest thing. Did have you watched have you watched the Fuji Nine? For him it's an opportunity. And the water I just had a gulp of made me make go like this. That's not accurate at all. But I'm not sure. Like where you gotta come out and you gotta dance and they tap you on the shoulder and Bob Fossey consoles you and blows smoke in your face. We're not even getting into the other kinds of soft skills. Like, in terms of like, you know. But like Not until you snap. It's it's a it's a good movie and I think we it's fair to say we both found it to be a special movie Not everything is everything.

And I I didn't I didn't say mislaid, I said lost, a lost thing. Kind of. I don't I it's just it's it's just so fucking weird to me. Cause I mean there's kinda there's there's several parts to it, I I imagine. You think about the beginning of um you know uh And in this case that could be LinkedIn, which I think is a blog site now. You know, uh Like if we get results from this test we don't like, we file it away. You learn things about like But I because of my Uh because I bet there are people in the show but don't remember the name. But I don't know. Keep going. What would you like to do? Like why would instead what the better question is, why do you spend your entire life It's just um I I'm much more dangerous to you than somebody who has spoiler spoiler wall lines and spoiler walls.

That was very, very important. And those are different things. And the reason they're gone is because of what they did and their sin, which gets his ass ass kicked a lot. They snap because they can't talk. Not get over trauma, sorry. And then your eyes are bulging and you want to eat b Julia Garner Like she doesn't do anything directly Oh, Nora keeps buying the cereal her kids liked. What? What else did I do today? What is it not? What's his name? Even like with middle school coming, you'd go like, oh this is one of the last times we'll get to do like a If you can listen to it it's done. Weren't you glad to be there at the moment when Max saw And y you know, sometimes you want to drink and sometimes you're like, oh god, how do I help?

She has everything in the house, all the treats her kids liked when they died. That that's not that's a huge problem. Here is the issue that I'm having, other than being kind of tired. I know that's not where Steve m I oh I was trying to make um I was thinking of Steve Just in case you ever watch it. They're uh the m the movie is And um This happens, like, to me, almost indisputably on three different seasons of Game of Thrones. But in any case, like I think you're talking about to me a very interesting, much more j much more general topic. Anyway. And not just like kissing a a girl, but you know, make instead of doing dumb homework Yeah, I mean But yeah, for like what five how what are the five, six characters in the movie?

I didn't I've got to be a little bit more than that. She's so good in this. And I think that's true for everybody. This is a bit so it's kind of a bit. com. But like it's also we we oughtn't If only you'd watched it many, many years ago. Spoilers are not really about people who care about movies. I mean James Hong's been around forever. She was an unlikely hit on college radio in the nineties. Yeah. But I aren't they also a comedy group Everybody's got a file drawer where you put all of the stuff that's not what your betters expected of you. Isn't that kinda funny? They haven't had to talk about the subtler parts of their relationship in forever. And finally we had to cancel it. Uh Key Luke, he was in a lot of things.

You know, notice for example, I've I I've uh had the temerity to correct people You Zach Craig and you love this uh uh um Well, you get your start in fast food because that's where a lot of people get their start The fucking actor. And the leftovers, what I've realized is yes, it is about grief and it's about loss, but um So it's all just a different point of view. And like blah blah blah. It's like, oh man, it's all so much more messy than that Or whatever, whatever your version of that is. Okay, okay. What was he? We got we got our whole world in front of us. Yeah.
