No timestamps yet for this episodeThis is Do By Friday, a weekly challenge podcast with Alex Cox and Merlin Mann. This week's challenge, use Rise. To sleep Stuba Friday. You know, you know, we almost had an official sound for the show when we used that egg maker. Remember how sad how how how how weird that sound was, the egg making thing that Max made us use? Oh yeah, my body just went inside itself because that mmm And and our friend made a made a little made a little song out of it. Bloop. I listened to all of the songs. I've listened to all of the songs so many times. We'll put it in show notes. Oh my god. I can't remember how I found this. Probably because I have uh like a once-a-week Google a alert for all of my stuff. Awesome.
Fine I know, totally normal. Find out a lot of things you're gonna want to change on a weekly basis. Not change, but adjust. Yeah. Will you find what you've learned about yourself from the internet? Yeah, to find out what uh uh all the people I've done. You disappointed means. I listen, I have Merlin Mann and Kathy Campbell and my spouse to let down. I don't need any more people to let down. Why would you think you're letting me down? This is your this is a you problem, not a me problem. If I'm if I want to make you feel bad, you'll know it. It oh I I know it right now. I I know how awkward I want to make this. Oh, you can do it. You could do it and destroy me. I know. What is um what was the name of that nice person?
I got a s a sack of verbal oranges like oh oh just as Yeah. Chicago Chicago backroom cop style. Then it hit you with a phone book. John Mulaney, Courtley and Charles. Um uh I will find the name of this person and I I got a little obsessed with this and I don't know, I don't think I'm overly sweaty about my stuff, I hope. Um, I mean what w there's things that it's it just it matters to me that people know like I'm excited about a thing and it's not because I make a nickel off of a an Amazon leak link. It's because like I I want you to always know that I'm sharing this with you because I am excited about it. And in that case, I wasn't like trying to like say go listen to Do by Friday. because of this.
I was like that okay. But that person like did a really, really nice job. I wanna find this person's name. Do you know it off the dome? I know. com and they have a something about following directions. Um yes, the inability to follow simple directions is their blog. Oh, oh, um no, they do have a band camp. His name is Stephen Cogswell, and I'll link. in there. Steven with a V. Oh, you did a good job with that. You might pass muster with Mr. John Syracuse. I know. All I want to do is say one word. I just want to know I just want him to hear me say one word. It's the only thing he wants to be remembered for. Daniel Kaluya, that's after. Steven. So what this what this person does, I I I want to describe this appropriately.
Like if you enjoy this show, uh, and of course I super hope that you do, and you like the bits, which I super hope you do. Um, we'll have a link in show notes to this person, a page where you can see where this person, Stephen, um, who has a sweet looking Rick in their photo. Um has put together yes songs but really something much closer to what I want to call audio art. Mm-hmm. Oh yeah Dirty diaper in the sand. Dirty diaper in the sand. Should I push or should I pull? Are you empty? Are you full? Dirty diaper in the sand. I gotta be honest. just just for myself. This is a this is a I got this has been a big week for me. We have to talk about the stream. That's the next thing I it's very vital to me that we talk about the stream.
Do you have the stream up right now? Do you have it up right now? I count one, two, three, four, five, six zebras in the foreground, two in the background. We just had a dick dick. family a few minutes ago and then there were some baby fox some little foxes earlier. Oh I don't know what a a a dict dick look go look up Thompson's dict dick. D I K D I K. There are these really cute things. Like it's kind of like a Padoo. A petit pidu. Like, um, it's one of those animals that like is so funny and sweet and upsetting because if you just saw a photo of it out of context, you'll go, oh that's a that's like a small deer. But then you see it's like a little bigger than like a chihuahua, but it's like the form factor of a deer.
Look up D-I-K-D-I-K. Look how cute they are. We had one of the zoo, but they I think they took ours away. Oh. We lost we lost all our elephants too for for for cause. So what Steven does is okay, and so of course I'm gonna just confess that the thing that grabbed me because for reasons that'll become apparent. I the way I the way I described this to my wife, and this I said this on Mastodon, forgive me. I said, hey Madeline, you know that thing where like suddenly out of nowhere I start m I make up a song about something? Oh I see little guys, you see little foxes. I do. Are those foxes? I can't do it. Yeah, it's a kind of desert fox. I'll send you a link to the so Google Namibia Desert Animals.
And look for you know, th you'll see the oryx, which is like the thing you're gonna see the most of, their national animal, which is this kind of big antelope thing with crazy long antlers or horns, whatever it is. Um I say to Melanie, you know that thing where sometimes I I start making up a song and I and then I sing it really loud? And she's like, well, y yes, I'm very familiar with that. Do Do I know about that? I said, well, are you curious about a version of like what that actually sounds like in my head? And she's like, I guess. And I and then I drop like Chavez tubes. Chavez tubes. I've been living on Chavos tubes. Or or or like Covey. Covey is very funny. The little made-up COVID song.
The government found me in your sewage. Now they know your sick Oh big big w wind blowing. Oh look at look at staring at the stand at the camera. I I don't know. That's the thing. I was uh the first time I thought I thought it was a little baby uh of the little baby antelope Oh Eating. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You'll see the teenagers like a like obviously, oh my god, we have a wildebeest. Oh there we go. There it's oh fuck, two wildebeasts, three wildebeasts, ha ha ha. One, two, three wildebeasts. This is my favorite thing in the entire fucking world right now, and I'm gonna explain it to the list just Look in show notes for something called the stream, because that's just simply what it's known as now is this stream.
I'll get it out of the way. Last night I was looking at my recos. And I saw something that made me go, huh? And it said, it's a live cams, live stream view of a watering hole in a desert in Namibia. Okay. And so you're like, hmm, okay. I couldn't turn it off. I was watching it in bed. So last night it's 11 p. m. our time. I think it's It's a it's a crazy difference. So right now it is 9 36 PM in the Nabi Namibian, the Namib Desert. Mm-hmm. See pop, see Pop. I always sound like I'm scatting. Namib Desert and Wilder Beasts. Move quickly into Tom Weaves. She cause you know, she couldn't stand up. Anyways, um okay, so you're like, hmm, okay, I'm listening. And I I popped because I the the the um thumbnail for it, it's a live stream, it just says live on it.
And the the uh image appears to what would appear to be what, four or five ostriches or similar. And it's like, huh, that's kind of interesting. I click on it and immediately I'm like, holy shit. It's a different time of day there. It's it's morning. It's morning in Namibia, you know, just like that Ronald Reagan campaign. But um it's uh morning in Namibia. Uh and like oh my fucking god in the time before I went to bed last night, I did scrub a little bit. I saw giraffes. I didn't see any rhinos. I saw giraffes, I saw giraffes, wildebeests, little like f desert foxes. Um I saw uh what were the other things I said? But like it was it's incredible. And like all these different animals will just roll up in groups or single, and like they share this little watering hole.
And it's s it this is like I'm gonna even say before the like the web, like when we first saw the first The first webcam I remember being popular was of a coffee pot at I think MIT where somebody had made put a camera so you could see whether there was fresh coffee in it. Oh no rules. you know, like like the s the size of a microchip today, the the the video feed, janky video feed of these things. It was usually a photo that would just update. But like I flipped this on last night, Alexandra And I lost my fucking mind. Just because maybe of like where I am right now, I could not stop watching it. I I lay there in bed watching it. Madeline woke up for a minute and I was like, I look, I know it's really late, but can I show you something?
And she was like Holy shit. No, no, no, no. It's like they're like we had a conversation. Well they seem to have turns. Yeah, it's very And there's an Oryx, there's an Oryx you'll see who I I think is the Alpha probably. He's you know, he's got all those characteristics that like I understandably I what most of this I know from gorillas and chimps, but like he's the big he's the silverback, right? He's got the crazy long horns, he's got a lot of authority, he holds himself erect, and he just stands there and kind of goes, hmm, and watches the watering hole. I can't describe this to you. This may not be for you, but I really encourage you to watch the stream. Because it's giving me life right now and it's running on my iPad Pro here all the time now.
This is my new thing. I'm the guy who watches the desert in Namibia stream. I I mean I think this is Oh you see little fox guy over little fox? Oh yeah. And I'm fascinated by the little fox guys because I'm like, are they not approaching because of an understanding? Or is it because they could be trampled? Right. Or did the beta like? These are questions I have a wondered as well. C Yes, exactly. There's so many stories. Well okay, so like one thing off the dome is like I called this a watering hole. I I think that I looked it up and I think that's an appropriate term for what this is. I I have not looked this up. You know that I probably will I don't Google things that matter. I only Google stuff like this.
I was gonna say this matters. This is guess, given a variety of conditions, the fact that they have you know, a camera set up in a de I'm guessing this is probably in some kind of a reserve that has, you know, that where humans are involved because I don't think what we're looking at here is any kind of a natural formation. It's an all it's almost like um well it's got a a breast-like f form factor. It's this like a almost like a pitcher's mound. that has a donut thing in the middle and another pictures mound. It It's oh look a little day little guy. And and that seems to be filling up with water on the rag and it is a desert. So I'm wondering if there's something like the equivalent of a hose.
where they fill this up. Normally it doesn't overflow. In this case it's overflowed. Why am I telling you this? So like the wildebeests, the oryx And the zebras will tend to go straight for the nips, whereas you'll see the Padoos or the the dick dicks and the fox guys will often sometimes like hang back a little. But no, they don't seem to be Nature videos have made us think that it's always, you know, all against all, but I think they must have worked out some kind of an arrangement, an accommodation. There is a lot of information in the description of the video. And turn off the chat. Always turn off the chat. I I I always liking the chat. I want my own chat. I want it to just run. And if there's two other people in the world watching at the same time as me, I want to go, oh my God.
Check out the little guy and they'll know exactly what they're doing. Like, oh my god, great entrance. When the wildebeest came in, it's that was such a good entrance. That's like halfway through act three, the fucking wildebeest roll in. Um how the hair might sense the presence of an owl. Not kind of. I would say that this is uh In amazement, not just of some amazement in uh a word. I would say that this is an awesome combination. of both the forces of nature and the curiosities of human technology just coming together to make something not just wholesome, but inc Incredibly interesting. There is a radio lab episode here. Yeah, oddly absorbing. And you know, it is what it is. And of course I'm gonna watch it and go, oh my god, I've already named one of the little guys.
I named him Rupert. Um, but I don't even know if it's Do you really think it's oddly absorbing? It is the odd part because it's a stream on the internet Or It doesn't make you sound smart to try to make me prove a negative. You tell me what you think about that. No, I th I don't think that this is I think that this is You don't think there's people out there who would go, why are you watching an African camera? Yeah, but there's people out there going why are yeah there's probably just off screen you can't reach the water must be nice. Yeah people are saying why are you drinking uh uh uh a a diet Pepsi from Panera and I'm like, well because McDonald's diet cokes. Especially after a zebra just walked through.
Oh big boy. Okay, wait a minute. You're gonna see this one guy and you're gonna know. His horn, I don't know, and you know, horns and antlers, they're different things and people get mad. They're differ completely different things, right? But the long pointy things on their head, uh, one of them has the most ass I mean, like when you see like a giant like alpha, like a moose or something or any of those antlered animals, where they're like those are the alphas. There's one guy Who's packing some serious heat? He's got some big ass pointy boys. And he strikes me as the elf. I can't tell if I've seen it. This one's got a dick, so that's a boy. I see I see an Oryx dick. This might be the show. This might be the show.
Probably obscured by the Hines. Just like the guy by Voices record. Anything uh I I actually was like, is this a Steely Dance song? That I don't get. Pink Floyd might have been the funnier joke, but that's it's a little on the nose. Um, I think this is incredible. It's bringing me life. And now the fox is just looking and he's like, hmm. See him on the right there? So what what do you think this is? Does that does that comport or did you read the thing? Can do you have any insight on what it is we're looking at? I don't really care. Oh look at the look at the coloration on that thing. Um What uh what what do you think this is? Got a little stripey dog. I met a really good dog yesterday with great coloration.
There's a new there's a new comic shop in West Portal. So awesome. Invisible Jet Comics, run by a wonderful woman called Chris, who has a very sweet dog named Moon, who's a it's something called Mat Maddie might know this term. I just learned it, a double doodle. Uh uh uh I he might. I don't. What's a double doodle? Chris is I said, Oh, and I walk up, but I'm not approaching a dog. I mean I'm just I'm looking not looking at the dog. I'm just extending my hand. I'm talking to Chris Chris, Chris is standing near me. This is not a high strong dog. It's a sweet precious angel. And Chris Luckis goes, Yeah, it's it's a double doodle. And I was like, Forgive me, Chris. I Chris I don't I can guess what that means, but would you tell me?
He said, Well, uh Moon's parents his parents are a golden doodle Is it a golden doodle and a labradoodle? Like two different Oh look at this guy. Oh shit, I missed the screen grab. Did you see that guy staring down the camera? Yeah. Yeah. I I don't know if this is a natural water source. But it's two different doodles and it's the sweet precious angel named Moon. And he has beautiful coloration. He's got kind of a very called moon because this he has this very unusual kind of coloration on his coat. Mm. Doodle doodle. Ooh, these are yeah, these are pretty. I I like that the uh like we're we've started I think actually The world has stopped calling them designer dogs because doodles, while expensive, they're not like weird inbred Yeah, 'cause I mean I I would think of uh she was talk we were talking about all kinds of dog stuff.
I just bent her ear for a really long time yesterday. You know, I had a blood draw Yesterday. Uh oh, Wilde Beast. Look at that guy. Look at the face on that guy. Look at the look at the head on that thing. And that awesome haircut. Oh, did you see that? I am one second. There we go. There we go. Yep. Um I wonder if this is the delay we have on the podcast. That's incredible. Oh, we should do oh I love that. What happened was the um the an oryx and a wildebeest just did a kind of like what sort of what appeared to me to be a like a domination aggressive gesture. They both did this like putting their head down really fast thing. Mm-hmm. The human uh equivalent I think is like walking up to a bathroom stall and Someone's in here.
Yeah. And by human equivalent, I mean I'm trying to think of the lowest. Yeah. The whole human equivalent of crawling under the stall and going, Can I get a drink? We were talking about all sorts of dogs and then we were talking about like different breeds and like oh oh shit. Okay. I'm a little I'm a little worried. Oh, uh I think the wilder beast is not gonna let this go. The orcs had better back down. Oh. Yeah. Um and we're talking about like especially not I'm not here to drag a breed, but we're talking about what she calls temple dogs. I'd never heard that term. But that includes Chows, Akitas, and Sharpays. I'd never heard that. And I was like, oh Sharpes, man. Do you remember in the 80s when people discovered Sharpes who already have like a lot of problems?
And so when I when you say designer dog, I would think of like these lab grown monstrosities. Like a like sharpies are cool, but oh boy, I hope you like swab and folds for the rest of your life. I'm I'm yeah I'm I'm probably uh wrong, but uh the idea is like, well, designer dogs are the ones made uh From like like it's something like a like a franken dog. The American yeah, the uh the American Kennel Association dog show people would be like, oh it an oodly doodle bluh blah. But we wanna we're gonna try it over over generations we try to breed the intelligence, the actual serious mind-boggling intelligence of say a standard poodle with like the playfulness of I don't know Pomeranian, I don't know.
But like trying, like, right, you're trying to get tease out the characteristics of two different breeds in a Franken dog. I mean that's what a Wikipedia page will tell you, but I think most of them are just at this point kind of oopsies and then you've got a little fuzzy monstrosity that's awesome. The the the the bitch the the the the mom the dog mommy is a rottweiler and the dog daddy is a long-haired dachshund and you're like huh and it's really difficult even if you're not a weirdo Isn't there some part of you that's like, is there a step stool involved? Like did she have to does she have to stoop? I have uh How'd the winger dog get on that shit? I'm surprised that you've never witnessed such a thing.
No, I'm I'm very surprised I've never witnessed such a thing. No, because you will Two designer dogs fucking in a park. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. I'm saying like uh just dogs randomly fucking in an urban uh setting and I'm making some assumptions about San Francisco, but they're similar to the Uh some Chicago neighborhoods where there's just some dogs having a lot of people. You think it's because of our permissive culture born out of gay gay people being thrown out of the Navy in the In the nineteen forties. Just uh a line. George Santos interview with that woman. No Oh my fucking God. There's this woman I'd never heard of. I've she has an unusual name, Zira or something. I think that's somebody from Planet of the Apes, sorry.
But anyway she interviews she's a comedian and she interviews George Santos and it's really rough. It's very rough. He thinks he's very charming. And and like, you know, he's talking about all this like it's just it's really funny. Um okay so dogs fucking two dogs fucking no just uh uh a lot of especially because of a a really In homeless populations, there's a lot of dogs who can't afford to be uh they can't afford to be uh neutered and uh in Chicago a similar thing happens. Uh yeah. Uh it's a No, I've uh I have um seen you know public Max down, Max, kennel, kennel Max. God I've uh I've seen you know public. I love when people yell candle at their dog. Kennel! Candle Max I like I like place.
We're fucking Mr. Brewster. That's his doorway tonight. Oh no, place, place Place place What is place what place means drop it? Place is like a go to bed uh word or like go to your kennel or go to a maybe maybe mr place please mix Go to bed. Oh god. I'm a Harry Shearer character on the Simpsons, apparently. My girlfriend in college had a miracle sister. Oh. She was she was twenty. Her brother Drew was nineteen. And then Mandy was two. Oh oh I was gonna say. When you say oopsie, that's what I think of like whoa. Dragon Cast the Gully and Towson. Alright, go Maryland. Little Mandy. She's done in his workshop and we were just we were just banging and listening to New Order and we didn't know it.
No. Did you know I used to be sexually active a long time ago? No, no. I mean I assume that uh anyone with a child has has some. Mr. Brewster tells you to place. You know any tricks? No And now my new series of children children's books It's gonna be kind of like Mr. Putter and Tabby, which is a wonderful series for kids. Oh, you know what? Write that down for your little ones. Look up Mr. Putter and Tabby. It's about an old man and his cat and it's really sweet. Um they're very they're very funny. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Um but yeah, I'm saying Mr. Brewster and Max could be a series. You know? Tonight they're in Diamond Heights. They're splitting some leftovers. Mm-hmm. There's there's you like music?
Oh god, there's so much of this who oh god, someone's drawing this on deviant art as we see. No, they're not. No one cares, Alex. I'm not saying our listeners are. I'm saying just someone Um oh uh g good to get a text from your m mom at two PM on a weekday saying, Can I call you later? Someone's gonna do it. Uh one sec It's okay if you wanna take it. It's pro oh here comes the here comes uh I think it's uh I don't know if it's dick dick. Because dick dicks are really skinny. I th is that a f I don't think they're dick dicks because it's got that stripe on it. It might be you think that's a like a fox? I bet it's a fox. Let me look it up while you're talking to your mom. Um, Namibia Desert Animals.
Dick Dick, Springbok, Namib now, looks like I don't know if it'll be in this place we're looking at here, and I don't want to get over my skis about this, but I don't know if you've go if you did indeed Google Namibia Desert Animals, but obviously you get Oryx. Desert Horse Black Rhinoceros? They got rhinos? There's uh there's a spotted hyena, golden mole, uh mere cats. Um your cats have a pretty specific place they live, I think. Bat-eared fox. Oh, look at this little guy. He's a bat-eared fox. They have honey badgers. Snake, snake. And go to the battery. Um everything I know about the world I learned on the internet in the late 90s. Peanut butter jelly time, peanut butter jelly Peanut butter jelly, peanut butter jelly, peanut butter jelly with a baseball bat.
Everything I learned about the internet uh from the nineties is came from a Simpsons or a Family Guy episode because I I was like, Oh look, there's the the Brian Griffin dog in a in yeah. Uh he's in a banana suit. Mongoose what's that? Mongoose Lappet faced Vulture? You're a fucking lappet face vulture as far as I'm concerned. Whoa, what's a hyrax? Look at a hyrax. Wow, that's a cool animal. Hyrax, also called Dassies, are small, thick set herbivorous orb herb eating mammals. Uh well f well furred. Huh. Sounds like something you'd like. Rotond animals with short tails. Hey, this sounds like you Look at this little dick dick. I sent you with what I hope is a a real scale human hand. I might have photos because when my my kid and I used to Oh my god, when my kid was in a stroller.
It was just such it's like we went to the zoo. I don't even can't I have so many videos and photos of us at the zoo when my kid was like three. We just used to go all the time to get on the train, roll in, you know, it's like it's like the way like these barks is with Disneyland. Like you would just go there for a little while. Like we had a pass, right? So Um and boy did we ever that didn't owe us a nickel. But yeah, we would there's like an enclosure that's mainly for bird type things. Um and that's where you would go and see a Thompson's dick dick. Oh. I didn't know that these were as, I suppose, not common. I I I don't know. I'm not a nature nerd. I'm f fake nature they might be. Well you never know.
I mean one imagines that That's a little I've never thought about this. But uh you wonder if like It's based partly on like what kind of animals will survive a trip from another continent, maybe? You know what I mean? The kind of stuff where you're like, oh wait, what's this little guy? Okay, there's a llama. There's all a baby giraffe. Oh look at that. There's my little kid interacting with things. Oh, so many memories. Rhino Tiger. I don't see a dick dick here. Dick Dick there. Dick Dick Dick Dick. Everywhere. Mmm. Mmm. Old Mr. Brewster had a doxant. E-I-E-I-O. Did you ever uh did you ever serve overseas? Hmm. That's what Max says. Max goes, hmm I'm just stealing that name from my my my dead my sister in law's dead dog.
Yes, yes please. Oh look at this angel. Oh is this a wildebeest that's on uh the uh Nambibia livestream? I think that's an oric And Oryx. Yeah, which is the national animal of Namibia. I think it's also known as an Oryx antelope. And um I am mixing up, yeah, the The wildebeest have the cool haircut, right? They've got like that like faux hawk and they got a head c kind of like somewhere between like a horse and a buffalo, a bison kind of, don't you think? Yes. You'll know you'll know when you see it. Oh look at Max. Oh poor Max. They're so sad about Max dying. First Bailey died and then Max died. Oh. Oh. Yeah. It happens. I mean they're animals. Are you enjoying the stream, Alex? Do you think this is something you might want to find a way to integrate into your life?
Yes, of course. I usually have a live stream on the like a a live stream on of some sort of thing. Like C SPAN or something? No. Oh no no no uh k like Mr. Bre Does Mr. Brewclo? No no no no like it specifically a nature stream. Oh no I did not know that about it. stream. I like it. I like all these little bits of information you haven't bothered to tell me greatly enrich my understanding of uh of my cliches about you that I'm developing. I hope it's useful. I suppose it's not a um N not they're not live streams, but I uh But like I mean like I w um when we got back from DC that one time, like I started watching the Panda Cam. when I got Oh, that was a big one. This is what just so you all know, like I nothing against pandas.
Alex hates pandas. I love pandas, but this what you're watching here, what I will just refer to as you know as the stream. I find much more exciting than the panda cam. I find this more exciting than like in there's a lot that have novelty. It's like, oh look, it's baby chicks being hatched or whatever, and that's great, or the eagle in its nest in Silicon Valley or whatever. Like but like this is boy this is somewhere between my sports and my soap opera. I'm just right now I'm watching What looks like wind blowing like dust around and immediate seating is available at the watering hole right now. I don't know what's gonna come up next. I might see some eyes come up. But like I'm just I'm so excited for whatever happens next on the stream.
I'm wondering if there's also story uh a story around uh the absence of uh any sort of l life is it uh a nap time? I I guess I uh Thought that a lot of these were n not nocturnal but um Like nightholders and stuff like that. Yeah, but um I don't know. Maybe some sort of treaty. I and this is again building speculation upon speculation, which always turns out great. But like given like I say, I mean like I this looks like a man-made or pr person human assisted thing we're looking at here, right? So I wonder if it's a resource like Yeah, I I obviously there there are other kinds of like apex mammals that are probably in this area that you really want to watch out for, but I bet this is not the same level of less uh risk as an unknown uh like an unknown watering hole?
Like I wonder if you habituate yourself in the same way a dog here's the or cat here's the can opener. Like I wonder if like it's a slightly a little bit more chill just because it seems like it's restocked with water all the time. Oh, possibly. I don't that's that doesn't make a ton of sense, but it's like I say it's self-speculation. Um it it says a uh solar powered bolehole fills a nearby. A solar powered borehole. A solar powered borehole Yes, which I believe. Oh, is it boring as into bore something? I I bel I believe so. Uh fills a nearby reservoir. And it is monitored by a water float that opens as the water hole's levels decline. Okay. So It i so yeah, I yeah, it seems like there's not really a sudden uh like a uh ooh, we got some new treats type of situation and just Yeah, or or even or even you think about like sorry to say like at a slaughterhouse or at other kinds of facilities that deal with a large number of animals.
You like hit the open the chute and like all the corn like goes into the feeder and everybody tears ass to get there. It's it's probably like the the fact that this scene I don't know. You know what? A, I'm sorry. Um, B, we should probably talk about something else. I just I found this last night and it gave me such a thrill. I woke up this morning so excited that I got to watch the stream again. I don't know. I don't know if other people will like this, but if you if you don't like this, well, I hope you find something you like as much as I like this. It's in Africa. It's in a whole other part of the world. And we get to we get to see this from far away. Oh, write this down too. Um uh write down um Hug Time.
Write down the name of that book. It's by the guy that did that uh comic strip. Uh let's see, not Mo Willems. That's the pigeon guy But it's a delightful book and and thinking about it now makes me cry. Hug time. No, no, no. But like, oh, you'll get this. Books that you've read, like, is are there any if I I mean, you don't have to say, but are there books that you've read to one of your nieces more than once? Uh uh, yes. Yeah, well we'll wait till they turn seven. 1416. And you still find yourself quoting, for example, write this one down, Next Stop Grant, Grand Central by Myra Cal Maya Mara Kalman. who also did the ill illustrated elements of style. Look up um yeah. Oh she's kinda like like like sort of like Linda Berry adjacent.
She's a very interesting um illustrator. Hug Time by Patrick McDonald. McDonnell. And he did, oh, what was the name of it? It was a really cute um newspaper comic. And it's got the same characters from that. But it's a rhyming it's a really sweet rhyming book where this the cat goes out this does to like try and like save the whole world and go out and like it's like, you know. Hug the whole world? Will that make it better? As Jules nodded yes, Doozy helped with his sweater. Oh no. And it's just it's really it's really sweet and the way it ends. Hug the whole world. Oh here here's a panel from it. Yeah, it's really sweet. And the way that it ends, he hugged all the birds he could find in the park, so many to hug before it got dark.
The boat docked in Africa, and jewels kissed the ground, the earth, so precious, so fragile, so round. Oh my god. Do you have these uh written down or do you know all of these? Well no most of the I mean like it it doesn't take that much I'm constantly quoting books we read my kid, Kitten's first full moon. Lucky kitten. Like there's just there's things in our oh like anybody's house probably. It's about a cat who mistakes its bowl of milk for the moon. But then it realizes that it's very lucky anyway. It's it's really sweet. Oh my goodness. I mean on the big thing. No, no, we we only read banners. I would be happy to produce a list of you admittedly, you know But my POV, I'd be more than happy to create a list of books that I think are enduring like very good books for kids.
I feel like that's almost a challenge. Not whiz uh yeah, I was gonna say it's not like a wisdom document uh material, but a I I I've thought about doing this for uh a while, the way Andy Bao did the I I I forget what he called it, but He introduced his son to video games in the uh historical order in which they were released. Yeah And uh I it i I I was like, what if I don't necessarily force this on my nieces, but just um take a look at it. So I mean part of it is it has to be it really helps if it's a book that you enjoy reading to your kid. And like, I mean that can be lots of mean lots of different things, but like there's certain kinds of books that are not that fun to read to read to a kid.
And like, you know, but there are others where like you just you develop a connection, something like um Um oh god, Syracuse tells me I pronounced this one wrong. Knuffle Bunny, which he says is pronounced Knuffle Bunny, about the little girl who leaves her little stuffed rabbit at the laundromat. Oh. She has a she has a tantrum and melts down. And and if you ever heard Syracuse and I both say this line exactly at the same time, exactly the same way. She did show this picture of this kid on the ground with big like wide eyes laying completely flat and looking completely traumatized. And it says, She went. Boneless. Such a f it's such a funny page. Do you see is that a bunny? What do you see there?
Is that a bunny on the stream? Okay, I'm gonna look up rabbits. I uh I d I at first I thought it was literally just like a Oh, I think that's a bunny, my friend. That is a Jameson's red rock rabbit. Also known as a scrub hair, I think. Does it have pretty tall ears? I can't tell because look at there's a little like Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well it's it's over at the timid part of the of the watering hole. Listen everybody, I'm so sorry. We'll cut all that out. No We should talk about the uh the challenge. Or whatever. Oh wait, you know what? We gotta clear a couple things out here. Um so uh uh Alex will remember this weekend for the rest of their life. That is from many weeks ago and we can remove it, right?
I don't know. Here's what you wrote down. This is what Alex wrote down. I mean, wow, all caps. Next bullet line indented. Alex will remember this weekend for the rest of their life. I think it's been there for weeks. Um Th I believe that is The irony is I have this very strange feeling that you won't remember what this was about. Uh no, it was it was about the um uh weekend. It runs with Dania? The No train train. Oh Oh no I'm not sure. When Alex has a moment and decides to ride public transit, it's also now known as a trainia. You're a tranic depressive. Oh! Oh! You're a transcript. I'm a trans. You're a tranic depressive. No, tranic, trans. Well because the trans trans, trans no, no, how don't how we already fair, fair.
But you know, keep it in your pocket. If you need to like make a dentist laugh or laugh or something, you're free to use that and claim it I would like to be clear that I do ride public transit as when I am when with other people. When say uh unable to do it. I mean as you remember Pathfinder. Pathfinder. co. uk. What what's pathfinder. com. You don't you don't recognize that joke. Every time I every time I start doing this voice, and you can see how I'm pointing on my fingernails? That's how you like 'em. That's how you like 'em. Gay and unavailable. I'm doing Maria Bamford's sister who's always criticizing her about trying to pick up men on Pathfinder in England. That's how you like them. Gay and unavailable.
I read her entire memoir yesterday. Yes, you've been talking about it in places. really does she do the book does she do the audiobook herself? She does and it's phenomenal and it's I like her so much. She talked in a word Can I remove this? I mean wow, Alex will remember this. We kinda kick it out of the notes. Yeah, it was just oh a weekend dice spelling. Place, place Max, place Uh mm plit plate. Talk about how I played with uh well Okay, now it is funny because I played with trains with my m with my nieces. We they they are indeed now Thomas people they enjoy Thomas the Tank and Yes. Are they causing confusion? They're causing confusion and delay. Do they have do you have the toys? Do they have the toys?
Yeah, yeah. They're they're not they're not the cartoon people. Cartoons. Get um if you get the powered ones, if you get the powered ones Like most people just get the get the like you know the ones you push around like a normal kid. If you get the ones where you put a double A battery in it, um I have a I have a power ranking. There's everybody else in third ranking. Number two, James. Number three, uncontested champion at both, at every way, torque, speed, ability to go up hills. And over hills like Lady. Get Lady Train. Lady Train fucking rules. I don't think they even have the basic ass Lady Train. I watched the show. I did too. And I mean I don't remember Gosh, if I'm being honest, I don't remember any episodes with a train called Lady.
But maybe I maybe but like it was mainly what? It's James Henry. Thomas, later Spencer, who's such a piece of shit. Yeah, Spencer's a diesel. He's a diesel when he thinks he's a badass. Take a guessing what I contain. I think it might be multitudes. Yeah, just gonna guess. It's it's just all full of full of misquoted Walt Whitman and multitudes. Don't I'm like a I'm like a store for onions inside of an onion. Trainiac. No, no. Trainia. It was training, but trainiac is pretty good. Mr. Brewster is a potential title. I'm also writing down Trainia Um and Trainiac. You won't remember what these are by the weekend. But Trainia. Trainia. Uh she's not as funny to read. Oh wait, now we got wait, I think the rabbit rabbit is gone, and now we've got what we're calling for now a dict, but I think it's probably something else.
This though I think is a dict. Okay. Well the dict okay, go look at an actual dict dick, like those photos, and you'll see like it really does have those spindly forgive my saying that I don't know if that's ableist spindly deer type legs. Yeah, you're seeing a moose like in person. But see how it's got the like a moose in person, you're like there's several things about if you've never seen a moose and it's really important. You're thinking, yeah, I know what a moose is. Dude, listen, I'm talking about have you seen a moose in person? I'm yelling at you, the listener, because you think you're smarter than me, which you probably are, but what I want to say is If you haven't seen a moose in person, do not assume you've seen a moose in person.
Because here's one thing I'm going to tell you. They are so much bigger than you realize. They're so much taller. Their crazy fucking antlers are so big. They're the trunk of their body is Asinine, it's so big, and their legs are hilariously narrow. I mean, it looks like a Sergio Argone's drawing of a moose is what a moose looks like. They're fucking s crazy looking animals. Yeah, I uh mistook a real moose, a photograph of a real moose as a um Boston Robotics. Monstrosity. Well that's interesting. Have you seen the new Disney robot yet? No, no. Oh, Alex, it's vital that you go look for YouTube videos of the New Disney robot. It's really interesting. It's crazy interesting. But the thing I note, I was thinking about this when we were at the Godzilla movie the other day, and then I think I think about it with every time I see a video of either Boston Dynamics or whatever.
The legs are always like Godzilla legs, like thick. Like, you know, like like a character in Lilo and Stitch like looks like an actual person like giant fucking like big thighs. You know what I mean? There's those ones where they walk weird like a chicken, but they've got those big ass legs, or they have the crazy spindly legs, like the like the Boston Dynamics dogs used to have. Oh yeah, I don't like that. I hate that fucking door. I don't like the thing with the door. That traumatized me. You ever seen them when they try to get it to open the door and it tears the doorknob off? Yeah. That's really upsetting to me. And I understand, like, believe me, as somebody who spent six hours yesterday in GPT trying to analyze my lab results, I understand.
That things go wrong for reasons that are not apparent, but like woof. So Disney, I watched a pretty good video about this. I can find the specific one, but I think you can find it just as easily. It's like something like, yeah, Disney's new robot is mind-blowing. So You know, animatronics, which, you know, as as I said so somebody the other day, it's usually like yo ho, yoho, we want the redhead type stuff. But think of that. Yes. novel by Kurt Vonnegut, those are basically player pianos. Like a a pirate of the Caribbean or a 999 Haunted Friends. Those are basically piano roles. In the sense that there is, it's probably not that much more. Initially, I'll bet, I don't think it was that much more sophisticated than a piano roll, but uh which you can learn about by watching Connections with James Burke.
Um, but 'cause there's a fascinating history behind things that looms and weaving that had punch cards centuries before computers. They s they were able to make crazy patterns on looms because of punch cards. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Did you know that? Oh, yeah. My great grandma in her basement in I don't know, like 1994 maybe. Oh my god. No, because they had there was like a whole old Commodore and there was also a player piano and there's a bunch of weird ass shit. But I didn't know that started with weaving It was a revolution in weaving that there were repeatable, complex patterns that didn't rely on people doing a kind of mind-numbing, difficult labor that was very prone to mistakes Um but but really a pirate of the Caribbean is a is a player piano in the sense that like it's got a thing that it does and it repeats it and it knows what the parameters are and because and for the time obviously you watch any of those old Disney videos it's crazy what those the imagineers did in the fifties and sixties.
But um and that's one it's just Johnny Depp doing uh this g Yeah thing over and over and it's gay really disappointing. It keeps repeating conversation, yeah. But but okay, so but like just to clarify, audio uh audio animatronics made by in imagineers, like m uh great moments with Mr. Lincoln or whatever, all amazing. I remember in the I want to say eighties. when they came up with like a I think it was a Ben Franklin that could walk a a few steps. Crazy stuff. But that's all like, but that's all, you know, programmed. So look up look up Disney robot uh in the last month, right? Just do a Google on that. And you'll see this little, it's sort of like a Wally, sort of like an Eve Eve. It looks like the bait it's a stereotype, but really it kinda looks like parts together.
If you've watched the the Boston Dynamics thing du parkour. You know what? I don't want to hear another fucking word about generative AI until you've watched the fucking Boston Dynamics bullshit do parkour. Have you seen the thing run on angles in Switzerland? Oh yeah. Yeah. It's completely upsetting. Yeah, this th this is a big thing. I'll remember this. We'll see who has a stick in a minute. You make me hold a box that say tet says ten pounds? You fucking piece of shit. I know everything. I am robot. And so but the the this guy is like, you know, it's using whatever term we want to use for this. AI. It like can respond and it can like adapt to situations. And it is like I don't follow this stuff.
I certainly don't follow this anywhere near how I imagine you do, but like I watched the video and I was like, oh It is kind of a big deal that we just learned that Disney has this robot that is on the face of it to me, just watching it, is like, I can't believe you've had this under a sheet. for however long to m it took you to make this because this seems r fairly competitive in some very interesting ways with stuff we think of as top of the line. And we say robots. I mean like, you know, Tesla has robots, but they don't look like Rosie. I mean they have to have things that use something like hands, but they like you know, it's not made to like bring you tea. It's not T C thirty. So cute in the little forest.
Oh my goodness gracious. Oh wait, wait, uh rabbit at the watering hole. Just so you know. Rabbit? Uh-uh. Continue. Anyway, do you see a little guy are you able to I I mean I know at this point we're really probably maxing out your pipe, but like are you able to like see what it looks like when it moves? Oh you know what I'm gonna hit history and find this one. for you. Yes, hi everybody. Alex and I don't ever get to talk except when we're recording a podcast. And sometimes neither of us is in particularly great health. And it's nice to have a visit with my friend Alex and I hope that's okay that you're listening. Oh god Uh I'm uh s scrubbing here and w what this reminds me of and as I skim this uh verge article that I actually I already had saved in Reader.
Um though it was an aspirational topic for Roboism. The um uh sort of motion sensor tech that is now very c common oh successful but common in the Billy and his friend Eva are watching the feed Um, I said there's a single rabbit there right now. Wow, during school. Wow. Wow. Oh it's lunchtime. Is that okay? Is that okay if my kid catches up on things at lunchtime? Do I know what my kid does at lunch? My kid and all their friends go to the room of the cool teacher. Oh, who my who who who my kid dressed as twins with for Twins Day yesterday, I'll send you a photo. They go to his class and then they they write out on the whiteboard, they write out the full name of lists of characters from properties they enjoy and then talk about what that character would be in a different property.
The And they draw they draw they draw pictures of it. It's absolutely incredible to watch. I don't blackout. Oh, do they have do they have smart boards? Like are they doing this on smartboard? Oh okay. Well, I do I didn't the smart boards kind of come and go for exactly the reasons you'd guess. Like I'm pretty sure it's a good idea. They got gifted to schools, but like they Yeah. Yeah, it was never gonna be as good as a whiteboard. And a whiteboard is such a leap forward over a chalkboard in so many ways. Absolutely. I had to teach my doctor the trick. Do you know the trick? If somebody's accidentally written on a whiteboard, I'm just gonna ask you this straight up because you claim to always fucking know everything before I know anything.
No. So so you've got a whiteboard that people will say use a lot, right? And one and a half of two things happens. Either somebody unintentionally writes on it with say a Sharpie or You've certainly seen this on very, very heavily used whiteboards. You'll see where old, especially black um Dry erase, like you you can't really get rid of it and it kind of just turns into a little fuzzy cloud. You can never erase. Yes. You use alcohol, it doesn't work. Do you know the trick? No, I don't think so. Well, my trick is to literally lick my hand and rub it really hard. What part of your hand is it? The palm of your hand? Or do you just move your thumb in and out of your mouth for twenty minutes on a creepy way or something?
Well, I okay. After this was witnessed by a uh Uh and Maddie's a big whiteboard guy. So I would I will do my buttons. Well okay, it i it's my personal like the there are personal whiteboards. You realize what's hard to do. No, no, but like it i it depends. Like you know the little corners that are hard to get. But then you do you w watch it wash it down with an expo, like official expo mo Uh wipey. But no, I don't know. What is what is the trick? Give me the life hack. Still had a a jobby job. Like every room had whiteboards in it. I had a whiteboard. There's a f there's a pretty funny photo of my cube from nineteen ninety-nine where where I was doing humor. I'd ri made a cloud and put dollar signs in it.
And like that was gonna be our business model. Um 1999. Um I I was blown away that they didn't know this because it's one of those it's it's one of those everyday somebody's born who's never seen the Flintstone. Um so you've got it's not I can't promise this will work for Sharpie, but I can I feel very strongly recommending this for that weird kind of amorphous red and black fuzz cloud of like Port You can't take probably doesn't have to be the same color, but I would start with a fresh black one and basically obscure the entire area with fresh Try a race marker. So if you've got an area in your like you say in your corner, like just color all of that all the way around it, let it dry. And I can almost promise you it'll rub straight off.
Oh, because the thing that makes dry erase markers dry, I mean if you think about it, it kinda at least in my head makes sense. I haven't Googled this, but the thing that makes a dry erase board and marker Like what it is, is whatever the science is in that pen about not being permanent. And reintroducing that on top of old ink seems to enyfy it and make it erasable again. It's basically like a time machine for markers. Will you try that today and let me know how it goes, please? I will. The y you know, when uh I uh had an office there was I would say a uh like I I guess I wouldn't want to say pandemic, but there w there was a sort of like uh a rash? Uh you know, yeah, y it started with like one whiteboard wall, right?
And it's like, oh, isn't this fun? Like look it, we can uh we can just write on the walls and then of course Some people do the thing where they write Sharpie on the wall and then there's a dick on the wall and then you have to hire a contractor to repaint it. Yeah. Yes, and then yeah, then it's like, oh my god, I would love that. No, those are really expensive. Alex, I'm so sorry. I'm I'm I'm I I I B B I hate that it comes out, but A I hate that it's in there in the first place. I'm so sorry. I do hate that it comes out though. Permanent dicks. Oh, okay, meaning we gotta talk about these permanent dicks. By the way, also on the stream immediate seating is available at the water hole. It is uh 10 26 p.
and then maybe Do you know do you know where your dick dick is? They used to say that. They say it's eleven o'clock. Do you know where your children are? They used to say that on TV. When did that stop? Oh well it started in the seventies. I don't know. Probably milk carton days. It's a really good soul silent P. I wasn't around advis It'd be better if I died, right? Like in some ways, like wouldn't it be better? Wouldn't it be better if I died? Here lies Billy Rubin. Um his levels. His his his his levels were labile. I hate the word label. Sounds like it's about wussy lips. Which is what people who aren't good at uh sports have when they kiss. Oh, Roomba's basic Roomba technology started off in early uh animatronics in Disney World, the ones that walk around that you you did That someone, you know, does control garbage cans that walked around tomorrow?
Yeah. That was a little after my time, but I do remember hearing about that. Yeah, and they did start off as like glorified RC cars because you would like see someone with a little remote, but then eventually i i they're like, all right, this is not. You see that in this video where they're walking this really cute little baby group around? Which is an a like I think closer to an animatronic, but uh still RC controlled, I think. Yeah. But but eventually it became oh, we'll just have it basically have an improviser be in the crowd with a little mouth uh uh like uh just you know little i earpiece standing off in the corner way more discreet. I I sometimes could not find them. and have BB eight or w w whatever interact with people w uh via sensors, which was just a a frickin' delight.
Well especially in some ways especially BB eight. Because like, I don't know. Like I I I think BB eight is such a it's so amazing all the different things that they would do to make BB eight work in the movie. I mean like all range of different kinds of solutions. But like at the heart of it that like there is you could make a like as they say on Love has one a 3D robot, like a real like like real world robot. I'd never go to a 3D hospital. I never go to a 3D hospital. Go to a 5D hospital. Fucking idiot. Ask Jason. He knows. He doesn't have a shirt. She's she's she's she's uh she's here, she's at her she's what did they say? She's at her rest. Is that what he says at the beginning? I f I've I forget.
She's she is a s uh yep, she is um That rest or something. I forg I forget uh what they I I but like what when they do the no spoilers, but like in the first scene of the first act, there's a cold open police are at this place and like the way that ends with this slow push in We were like, no, oh no, is that oh, oh, oh, you know what I'm talking about? Mm-hmm. Yep, I didn't I had to re-Mummy? I had a scroll back. Yep. And uh I was like, that's I know. I know that's not a no access. Access is incredible. Uh I okay, I I guess I did not hand this to you, but my favorite article on the video. Some of the article about this woman who's made like three documentaries in three years. Uh yes. Um and uh her she is incredible.
I have I I haven't had the um courage to reach out to her yet. But I think you already know enough people. There's like three different things I've told you about in the last eight days that that you just responded by telling me someone famous, you know. No, not someone famous. Okay. Is a random podcast person So you gonna you gonna reach out to her? What about Brit Marling? You should contact Britt Marlin. I don't know who that is. The OA, the away. Are you getting this? The OA? You never watched the OA? No, not. I know that there was a protest outside of Netflix when it got canceled. Oh, was there anybody new there? Town. No, there's there's only so many nerds that come through and there's only so many zombies podcasts.
You got the loop. Cubbies. Cubby. Oh yeah, those cubby holes. That's what they call 'em. No. That's what Mr. Brewster calls them. Challenge. The challenge this week is to use a new app that uh new to me app called Rise All Caps. And it is an app that works alongside with your uh Apple devices like your phone and your watch. uh in kind of interesting ways to with the goal of helping you uh get better at sleep. How would I uh it's not their words, it's mine, but I and you feel free to tell me your take on this. The idea is that it's a fairly like Um wide-ranging app that can do lots of different things, but at the heart of it, it works with your watch or mainly pfft Let's be honest. It works well with your phone.
Or excuse me, with your watch. Like it doesn't, I don't think it is in any way offering its own sleep tracking unless you count picking up your phone as sleep tracking. Right. I mean it really needs something like your watch or auto sleep to like get that's how it derives its information, right? I mean if you if you all if all you have is a f is a phone and a watch, well, like can it do its own sleep tracking, like the way that auto sleep can? It says that it can, that you can put on uh put it on your yeah, like put it on the phone. Yeah, but like no, right, but it's gonna it's old. non-Apple health version. It's what I'm saying is why do we why do we all, including uh um everybody, including Syracuse and me, including this happened on the latest upgrade, why are we all making fun of the rewind thing?
We're making fun of for a lot of reasons. I think Syracuse, as usual, probably said it best. Like the most important part of well, I'll paraphrase this. The most important part of that stack they have zero control over. In order for the rewind pendant to be of any use at all, it's going to have to have really outstanding if you're really gonna go like spray on some AI sauce to like go, oh yeah, well, you if you want to find out if this person's phone number, you just ask your Star Trek pendant and it'll know. It's like, well, okay, that's like a whole new way I would use something that is at odds with a decades old way I do stuff, which is I put something where it belongs and then I get it later and I don't want to have to talk to a brooch to know people's names.
But fine. Let's say that is like the best Bard Poe ChatGPT. Let's say it's the best LLM experience you've ever ever had where everything went flawlessly And it was like you've got this personal waiter who like knows you. You've got your own, if you're into the Gilded Age, you've got your own like personal banister or whatever who like really knows you. If that went flawlessly, this thing might work. But it's not integrated with Siri. It's using like they they've got some kind of like, oh yeah, best of breed. Like we've got an AI thing. Like, well Let me put it this way. I, like I say, I spent probably six hours yesterday on Chat GPT. I I'm very dedicated to making this, to working with this thing for the stuff that would improve my life.
It's actually being it's very helpful, but it's a lot of work, right? I'm I'm okay with all of that. To present this as what I would call a skymall magazine thing that you just pick up because you like They're certainly not going to present this as a an accessory for your phone, you know, which I think the Apple Watch arguably was at first. They're trying to say, hey, we all use our phones too much. Wouldn't it be neat if you had a Captain Picard thing you could tap and and then have stuff display on your hand. But like the most important part of that stack is the part they're just glossing straight past or just don't have any control over. I cannot get Siri to go onto the internet right now for months.
I get the same Oh for months? Wait, like it's a bug that you have that it just won't I see here's the thing. Okay, and like here's the thing. All of you shut your fucking mouth about what you're about to say to me and actually hear what I have to say. I have ever I've had everything configured fine. Everything in the house has been working fine. Sometimes when I say stuff like Uh turn off the West lights. It just works and it's fine. It's okay. Sometimes I say turn turn off the master lights. And it goes and nothing happens for a minute. And it goes, it does, you know, it's those three things you get, right? It's something like da-da-da-da. This is taking longer than expected. And of course, there's a huge pause.
And then it says, I'm having trouble connecting to the internet. For more information, go to the home app. Yeah, yes. Spoiler alert, I've gone to the home app. And no, no. Again, can I just remind you all, shut your fucking mouth. No, I don't get the pop-up at the top that says network mismatch. No, everything is fine. Are all the home bots still updating fine? Yes, they are. The ones that are on betas, the ones that are not. Is it my fault that they're on betas and they don't work? I doubt it. I doubt it. Like, why has it that been happening for months? I don't know. Now, do you want to go put that in Mima's house and say, well, here you go, run your life. It'll be fine. Go have fun. Go be kids.
Like, no. Like, and so that that's what That is completely I have just I got a son of a soundbar that I love. I told John. Oh you're part of you're part of it now. I don't think I am. What I do is I watch. Okay, sure. And it's it's actually for our purposes completely perfect. It's exactly what we've needed and never got from, if I'm being honest, the the the the three previous sound bars we've owned in the last 15 Years. It fits the right size. It super amplifies, is able to super amplify the center channel vocal range and create a broader, bigger sound without being boomy, which the other two sensate. bipeds in the house just can't deal with. But they don't like the loud yeah, the 'cause they don't like home pod sound either.
But like but like I mean the thing is I I I I've gone into so much of the experience Boy, this is I'm really off topic already. I'm sorry, this is a rant. Can we just do the fan rant real quick? Do it, do it. I love it. We went to watches, the humane, let's go. I like the Apple ecosystem. I'm in the Apple E but like even if I didn't like the Apple ecosystem, what am I gonna do? Like I I do like it. Let's just let's just get that out of the way. I super do like it. I love my watch. I love my phone. I love all my stuff. I mean there's ways in which I adore my Apple TV. I like doing stuff. Like I'm this my entire world is bound. I'm doing a lot of stuff with computers right now, and all of those computers are Apple computers.
Apple devices, Apple services, Apple software. Like, yeah, I mean there's other stuff too, but like it's all like what am I gonna do? What am I gonna do? Go buy um, I don't know, a Gemini 65 or whatever the fuck? one of those s seven camera weird things people on planes use that I guess run Android. What am I gonna do? Dip my toe into that? Apart from my Sinology? Oh my god. Apart from my Synology. Sinol. Oh. Oh no, because that when you're on hold, that's how they pronounce it. Um the apart from my three Synologies. the Eero routers I have at home and work and not much else apart from Google Hubs, which work a lot better. I'm all in on Apple. But well okay and this is why I so kindly ask everybody out there to shut their fucking mouth.
I did all the thing. Well let's just start here. It didn't work. It hasn't worked. It doesn't work. Oh, you probably did something wrong. Okay, sure. I probably did. I went and Googled how to fix it. Google. And then always I just put the name of the error that I got literally, literally, literally, in quotes. And I got responses. And almost all the responses were Apple uh knowledge base articles about you probably have something called a network mismatch. I'm not getting that. What I'm trying to get at is this. Like i is is it my fault? Well, if it was my fault, it was done with probably some pretty good knowledge behind like what I did wrong. Like I don't just go around changing changing shit because I'm curious about what happens.
Let's just say there's a reason I have a knob ripped off of my USB Pre-2 that I haven't put back on because it works fine as it is. I never fuck with something that works. That's why I got rid of Home Assistant. I loved Home Assistant, but it was just introducing too many question marks to when something didn't work. Right? All that stuff. So here's what I'm trying to tell you. Enter series shortcuts. The way this gets presented, my next series shortcut is going to be something that lets me just pull up the stream. On my Apple TV? Most of my series shortcuts are single actions at this point. Oh boy. Well I was playing well, this is in the notes, but I was I I really like Federico's things. Shortcut, but oh my goodness, is it ever a Rube?
It's a real boy, is it ever a Rube Goldberg device? It's I mean brilliantly put together, but But here's what I'm trying to say. Hey, you know what? Why why oh the buddy? Um uh the reason I want you to shut your fucking mouth is like uh uh show me how this works out for the people who know even just slightly less than I do about both that that something is going wrong. Right? Because can we can we throw that out? No, we can't. Because I am the sort of person who does notice when something is going wrong. You have people in your life that you love who don't notice when something is going wrong. They don't notice when things fail silently. Because they were never meant to know. Right? That's just life for a lot of people.
That could be people who put a piece of black tape over the check engine line. Like there's all kinds of stuff where like like I just this I just can't deal with this. I or or you merely literally do not know that something is not working correctly. Okay, so I'm aware of when something is not working correctly, and I could I will have the temerity, I will have the arrogance to say that I've actually I'm pretty good at troubleshooting at least the basic stuff. I know how to turn things off and on. I know how to reset a home pod, which is the next thing to try, but it's such a pain to reset five home pods. It takes so long. Oryx new orcs just appeared. Look at the horns on that guy. Oh wow. Yeah.
Hello. But okay, so now let's let's be mean. Let's have the the time of the show where we're mean. You're not me. You're somebody else. You're even me Ma. Whoever you are. You got this thing. You spent f like $500 on these cool speakers that sometimes hear you. Sometimes play the right thing. Sometimes play dubeginning, duh beginning, duh beginning. Like how's that work out for Mima? And what what what what is her recourse for the $500 she spent? Are you gonna go move in with her and and periodically reset things and try them for two nights? until you've been able to reproduce the error. This is, I am, I have the temerity to say, this is not my problem. Like and I'm not even trying to do like it just works.
What I am saying, like, is uh in a way that where I reached the end of my rope with Alexa products in the past year and have only one in my life right now, like I'm kind of I'm not at the end of my rope, but I am extremely frustrated and tired from trying to get Apple things around voice and home pod and all that kind of stuff, trying to get it to function just even consistently And I'm not understand. Like I'm not being some some fucking dumbass on a podcast that goes Siri doesn't work. It doesn't do what I want it. Like no. Like I learned I know all of the things. I'm the guy that's read all of the articles. Apple can't be fucked. to give you a list of everything you can do in Siri. I made it up on my own.
I go up and I look up the hex code for Pantone Colors. I do all of that stuff. I have records of all of that. This is what I do. The stuff you don't need to know about, the stuff you don't need to see. I need I I I learn why my potentiometer is making a scratchy noise and figure out how to fix it. Like I learn, I learn because I've been at this shit since 1987. I my wife says this my phone's not charging all the time. I said, Is there any chance when you pull out the lightning and look at it? Is there any chance that you see vertical lines roughly on the little charging points that look kind of like a crayon? And she's like, yeah, there's like a blue crayon on here. It's like that's that's that's it's real easy to fix.
I just need to get you a new cable. Do you know that? Have you looked at Mima's cable lately? Because guess what? That's a tiny little short that is completely fine until the day it's not. So I'm really frustrated with all of that. It like really drives me fucking bananas. And while at the same time, I would not be able to sit there yesterday for however many hours in GPT, I would not be able to sit there. uploading, reloading, reteaching it what to do with JSON files if I didn't have Apple Health and the app ecosystem that allows me to output that. It's really fucking complicated. Like, why don't I just move? Like, well, like a lot of people who don't like where they live, I don't have the money to move.
And even if I did, where would I go? What am I gonna do? I'm gonna go to Linux. Like I'm gonna go to I don't know a a Chromebook? Not bloody likely. But I've ranted because that's frustrating to me. And then the double frustration is then the chicken voice, the chicken problem thing of like, well, you're holding it wrong. And it's like, well, there must be a lot of people holding it wrong because There is just a whole bunch of shit and there's this part of me when I hear Marker talk about stuff like Marker like I think too much to his credit, is like, I don't wanna know anything about you. like I don't know anything about your data, but like he in underscore will talk about like you get numbers on all kinds of stuff with how your app is used in the aggregate, right?
So you know stuff like how many pickups you can see yourself on your phone, how many times do you pick up your phone and unlock it per day? Fascinating metric that you probably didn't know is there right now. You learn stuff like how often did people uh do this and then that? Like all the kinds of stuff where underscore can go like, well, I thought people were going to do this, but I see from the desired paths that they're actually doing this and I need to address that, right? All that kind of stuff. How does Apple not know? How much of this stuff is just constantly throwing errors, either silently or loudly? I don't know the answer to that. Shortcuts in particular. I've just given up trying to do shortcuts on HomePod because it'll work and then it won't.
Then it works and then it doesn't. I can't remember the last time I've done that. And then like, but you know, and that's not all that's not all on Apple. Because like when I'm trying to do something with Apple TV, and I told you I had like I blew way too much time making four really good shortcuts for Apple TV that let me walk into a room and say, Hey Dingus, watch live TV. Now that sounds easy, right? But dude, this ain't 1978. That means in that shortcut, I have to say, go to Apple TV. Which Apple TV? This Apple TV. Okay? And what is like what do you mean by that? Well, that means go to the app called Hulu. And inside the app called Hulu, go to the channel called that, right? And like I'm sure there's an uh an index or a codex or a whatever for those things.
And I'm pretty sure they probably change. Like I don't think any of those things mean the same thing, on top of which, sometimes it just forgets the idea of what an Apple TV is. And since sometimes, often it just goes I can't do this. Your phone's not here. Or you're on a different network. And now me walking into a room and being able to say, and if you don't like this or don't care, I that doesn't concern me. I do. And that's what matters. If I walk into a room and say, Hey, didn't you watch Live TV? And then when it just stops working, what's my recourse? Well, I mean, what are you gonna tell me? It's not really what it's for. I think I it could be argued that that's precisely what it's for.
And finding a if not a geek, at least a power user, who's able to have the curiosity, interest and focus to go and make their own shortcuts, but then have them fail silently or loudly almost all the time. Is that anybody's fault? If it's my fault, then I guess I then I do need to go to Android where I'm sure this will all work better. But that's why I ask people to very kindly shut their fucking mouth because believe me We're probably as smart as one another, and I have done a lot of this stuff, and it can't prevent me from constantly coming back to What is this like for normal people? How many normal people just stop doing or using a certain kind of thing and you never find out about it? Because it strikes me that Apple must have an idea about that.
Uh uh there's uh uh a big difference between uh knowing and understanding, but I do think they know and understand both and just don't care? I mean they sell uh uh iPhones it's gotta be it's gotta be so complicated to have I think about something like just I think about Greg and Drafts We've talked about this before, but drafts is so interesting to me because you go like, oh it's drafts, it does stuff. And you're like, yeah, but like there's drafts. Fucking OS to me. Like it just is. Yeah, but here's the thing. Drafts runs on your Mac. Drafts runs on your phone. Ooh, look at these deer guys coming in. Are these baby orcs? Um giraffes works on your phone, giraffes works on your Mac, Giraffes works on your iPad.
Maybe someday it might even work on your Apple TV if you we still have Apple TVs. But the point is to you, all that stuff over in your right rail, like one I use a lot is save this to Dropbox. So I start something in drafts, it takes the first line of it. And gives it as a date stamp and then adds that into my elements folder on Dropbox, right? I use that constantly. It works great on all of those platforms. Is that doing the same thing exactly the same way on all of those platforms? You see it as a button, you click, and it does the thing. My gut is there is a lot more to getting that to work on three completely different platforms. than you think. Swift this, swift that, whatever. But like now think about that with shortcuts.
Think about when you go to that right rail and you click on info or whatever and you're like, do you want this to run on your watch? Do you want this to be available in the finder? Do you want this to be a quick action? Right? All that stuff. Pause on that for a minute and think about what's involved in this seemingly and again they've built a layer on top of a layer. They've got tools for tools. So shortcuts is a way that feels nerdy to us, but who knows what's even happening underneath shortcuts. with all the APIs and how it all fits together. There's so much that could, I imagine, there has to be so much that could just break with any of that stuff for reasons that are like probably very difficult to track down.
And that's what developers have to keep up with. Does and it's never a good sign when uh of the the person who created uh the product that was acquired, you know, leaves the company when the, you know, software that was acquired, um, isn't really functioning the way most people want, even power uh users uh that are complaining about it. Um 'cause y you know, Ari and and the other shortcut, uh formerly workflow founders went and are doing their own thing again. And it's uh uh I don't I don't know people, but but it seems unclear. That uh oh god. Who else do you know these are? I didn't say that I even I didn't even know I I didn't even say I knew Ari. You uh you assumed that His name is publicly available and uh You know Ari, I know Avi.
You probably don't know his name, but I'm very close to the Avi Tavanian. We're very close and we work very closely on a lot of the stuff on uh step up or whatever his OS was. We worked on that and uh then of course we worked very closely 'cause he had a very difficult time with I don't like to drag people, I'll just say a certain a certain blood testing uh company down in Palo Alto. I worked very that was a difficult time for him. I can imagine. Also, I work with George Schultz. And his grandson Tyler, who I love very much. Oh, Tyler. None of them are black, but for the act of uh uh in thirteen from thirteen reasons why in the Hulu limited series. What a what a time that's well I was the one who suggested that Amanda do that.
Because I I loved Amanda. No, I loved her. I loved her. I knew her when I worked at YouTube with with Amanda. And I she's black and I loved her. in uh in Mean Girls. Remember she she says she has ESPN. You remember that? And and then um and then I work with her very closely when she was in I call it La Miz. Uh work with her very closely in that. With uh with Eddie Redmane, who's who's actually not a woman, and uh and Wolverine. You understand? You know? Alex, I I love you, but only on my own. Do you really understand that? What's w what's the ch challenge for this week, Merlin? I'm done with this thing already. This with Ry's sleeve. Yeah. I was like, it's like it's so clever, and just I don't want to talk anybody out of trying this, but like it is it's so neat, especially if you're like blah You do that, right?
You go, ah, I want to work on my sleep. I want a thing that does all the things and plays noises and has articles and gives me fucking homework and like ah do all these things. Go to bed at this time. Blue light, do this, manually enter your nap. Bleep bloop. Which autosleep does fine on its own. Um do all this stuff because I wanted a comprehensive solution for my quote unquote sleep debt. And then somebody very kindly uh dive bombs in from an uh um ath athletics and says people are saying like, oh yeah, athletics, I like the way they handle sleep debt better. Well, I'm gonna be that guy and go like sleep debt Really? We talked about this on the after show last week, but that is the part of this that is has finally put me completely off it.
Is like I think the way they Boy, I'm so sorry you guys. You did a made a beautiful app and I hope people love it. The the the fish they're dangling with with this one is you have sleep debt. You need to fucking deal with it. You got fucking sleep debt. Do you know about your sleep debt? 'Cause you have sleep debt. And you know what? You slept poorly last night, which sucks. You should have probably done some read some of our articles and done some of the the sleep uh, you know, routines and the listened to the noises and had this person talk to you for a minute and a half. And all all of those things, because now you, you know what? I'm so sorry to say your second day of using this app, you now have more sleep debt.
And so now you're gonna need to work on that, get deeper into the app. Do you get what I'm saying? Oh, uh the uh fish food is making you feel like shit about how you sleep, and trying to couch that in this thing that they are calling this s sciencey, pseudosciencey idea they're calling sleep debt. Which in my own experience is not a thing. It I I feel like you can't use Saturday night to catch up on sleep you didn't get on Monday. So stop adding that to this side of the account and trying to make me feel bad and make me use your app more because as pretty as it is, oh you're in grog and you just It is great at going like, hey, it's afternoon and you get tired at three. Yep, sounds all right. But like, if I don't go to bed at nine tonight, it adds more numbers to my debt.
It's not trying to make me a better person. It's trying to make me a weirder app user. And I fucking hate that. Alright. I I said all of this in the after show last week. I I do not think it is well designed. I miss cool design a lot. I don't think I don't I I am skeptical immediately, immediately when they uh when there is a learn tab and uh there's so many articles, there's so many places where you can sign your friends up. And uh uh I I went past that. I uh dove all in, I turned all of my notifications on. I did too. I open I told you this, I opened all the gates. Shit I never do. Yeah. Like allow this in some no, no, fine. Give it to me immediately. Ah All the time I want to know. I want to know when I should go read an article so that I can lose my sleep debt.
I want to know when I should go listen to this. I want to know when I should go in and set a smart alarm. There's so Much it's it's almost like a what do they call it? A a busy box? Like one of those things you give it to kids to like spin things and turn things and And it you hit yellow and it goes, I'm money. Fidget spinner? What? A busy box. A busy box. It's one of those things that one of those tables you give a kid who's a toddler, like a little toddler to keep them occupied. It's a busy box for sleep That's with a with a with a very thin veneer of science spray. Feel free to quote me guys. I uh I do think there is something to smart alarms, which I was very I've always been really skeptical of.
I do I absolutely do too. We talked about this last week, but the idea of a smart alarm is to detect where you are, quote unquote. Ugh, I'm sure peop I'm sure scientists and actual doctors love when we talk about stuff like this. But you're at a point where you're in like lighter sleep. where it would be less sort of disruptive to wake you up and it goes like so you give it a window and it does let you go in and define that window but so I tried it one day, which was plenty. I said between seven AM and seven thirty AM, start gently waking me up with a window of up to twenty minutes from when You know what I mean? So in this amount of time, over 20 minutes or 15 minutes or whatever, like slowly wake me up and goes bling blong bling blong.
It gently wakes you up, but when you're not in a deep part of sleep. Correct? Yeah. Yeah. Sorta very smart idea. If any special science braid that's on this that gets this smart alarm to work for me because I haven't gotten uh necessarily better sleep this week It's just I mean a a quickie a quickie how many days how many days have you done it? Every day since two two. So two five days, right? Yeah. Okay, what I would do is Uh uh you can do this with one device to be easier with two. What I would do is go up and look at if it'll show you, show you when the alarm went off, jot that down. Or like when you were aware of it or whatever. And then I would cut over to Auto Sleep or Sleepwatch or your actual good app and I would look at w what quote unquote cycle of sleep or how deeply and sleep did you get a purple bar on that one and auto sleep like go in and see how deep those apps think you were sleeping at the time it woke you up.
Right? Wouldn't that be one way to compare? Because what it shows you is what looks like at first I thought it was a noise thing. Like that very right side on the vertical where you get like a waveform. I think that's supposed to be your sleep activity in Rise. Oh, yep, yep, there's a lot of things. Have you been getting a lot of uh it's It it's been slow for me both last night today when it's calculating my zones and uh Oh look at that I'm up to six point eight hours of sleep debt. I have My energy potential today is sixty six percent, says science. Oh damn. I also like at the bottom out there like well here's the science on this. The uh I I I ten thousand hours is the science. I I am a little bit more than a little bit.
Hi, I'm Nicolas Cage, turns out. That is not a Nicholas Cage. It's kind of a Nicolas Cage. It's sort of like if Elliot Kalen was doing Nicolas Cage. No, someone's strangling Jimmy Stewart. That is not Nikai's king. You're choking me out. A Oh, oh, oh, oh, I'm not. What is that? Oh, oh, oh. No, you sound like the the you sound like the school secretary in Ferris Bueller Oh Ed Rose I think he's a radical dude I just like Jimmy Stewart alone. With your knee, you shouldn't be throwing anybody head. I don't know Jimmy Stewart. I don't know any of the things. He says to her. Her name's Edie something. I forget the name of that actress. The um Prince Mr. says to her, he says, I don't trust that Ferris Bueller as far as I can throw him.
And then she says, Well, with your knee head, you shouldn't be throwing anybody It's still funny. She's sniffing, she's sniffing the white out and she keeps removing more and more pencils from her hair. Oh my god, I love that movie. What a great movie. I'm not here to drag this. It might be helpful, but there is a little funny switch in me where I kind of end up making this noise. I go, hmm. Like it's kind of the thing like I don't I I don't think Syracuse invented this, but I'm always stealing this when I go. Is it like I'm doing Syracuse whenever I say that Like science says that the the that sleep debt is something that can you can acquire over months and years. It's not like technical debt.
I'll tell you what I said. Fine. Let's go with that analogy. You know what I said to somebody on Mastodon? I said, I have never believed quite in the idea of sleep that or more specifically, like if you had a really shitty night, my God, yes, try and get a nap. And just to be a i a a a a jerk about this, because I think this is implied by the app, what it why is it sleep debt? Well, because it starts out as you got a credit card so you get a Cincinnati Reds cap, and then pretty soon that starts building up. You get more debt and then you have to observe your debt. You know, you've got to pay interest on your debt, like if you bought like a social media company. Like you have to like uh you get a billion dollars to service your debt every year or whatever.
Like that starts to really add up. And those numbers run the whole time. There's a phrase I've used a lot this week. There's no pause button on that, right? That's why it's debt. 'Cause the debt never goes down until you pay the debt. But meaning when you got that Cincinnati Reds cap when you were in college, like that stays on your record. The time that I didn't send the Triumph album back to RCA fast enough and I had to pay twelve dollars for it. Like I owed forty dollars for like fifteen years. That's debt. Okay, is that the same thing as you didn't sleep so well last night? Maybe. Because if you didn't sleep so well, if you've been in whatever your version of crunch mode is. Maybe it's because you've had a baby or maybe because you work for a games place or whatever, right?
Well like what I am and I I'm I could very well be exaggerating this and if if I am and being unfair, I apologize, kind of. But like I get the implication from this app. Did you notice, for example, it always has like, hey, but you know what? Stop a street day. Saturdays and Sundays you can sleep in is like usually like their thing. This is your day to catch up on sleep. So you g it like it it defaults to like not having the alarms and smart stuff because it's Saturday. It's your day to catch up on sleep. Well what what the fuck are you so that rolling debt, if you were up all night, let's say somebody your kid was barfing. on the previous Monday night, are you here to tell me that that rolling debt has sits on the books in the same way for five days?
A. And that B, I can pay down that debt by sleeping late on Saturday and Sunday? Is that what I'm getting from this? Because that sounds like straight up bullshit to me. Yeah I'm a lot of things. I think this is this is not scientific. This is just based on my own hard one anecdotal. Which is like you have approximately on the outside, you have about 40 hours on which to catch up on sleep If I'm being honest, I really think most people have 24 hours. But I would say for a healthy neurotypical person, you have up to 40 hours from the time of deprivation. to like not have that be bad. The thing I said on Mastodon where I was trying to be clever is like referring this to sleep debt is I think a little bit bananas.
I said, and in my personal experience, those debts go to collection. way sooner than four days later. Yeah. Like that that's the that's when you get a cold sore. That's when you get weird and become emotional. It's already having an impact on your life. And like trying to catch up on that a month later, just because it's the same amount of dollars on the books. I don't know, I know I'm beating this to death, but like I just think that's damaging to people. And it's damaging to me as somebody who's always trying to say to people, hey. In your life, you gotta go a little easier on yourself. Or you've gotta be harder on yourself at a time when it's useful. Being uh being hard on yourself when it's not useful is not useful.
It's not good. And maybe of all of those in my dumb satchel full of advice, can I just point to the one that is the most incontrovertibly true one to me? You get mad because you can't go to sleep. You get sad because you can't go to sleep. But really, you might just get mad. Ooh, look at that works. He's looking straight at the camera. You but right you like you know how this is. And so what do you do? Well you do exactly what your dumb fucking parent voice in your head is. You yell at yourself. Go to sleep, go to sleep, you piece of shit. Fucking go to s you've got to go to sleep. Do you even realize let's use logic? You have a big day tomorrow and you need to be up early And now you're anxious about it, so I'm yelling at you to go to sleep.
If that has worked for you, you would be the first person I've ever met that that worked for you. Congratulations. I am impressed. There's a much more difficult there's a much more difficult thing you've got to do, which is Psss, what I've done and what a lot of us do, which is like learning to sit with how that feels, and then learning learning to deal with those feelings, to deal with those impulses, to deal with that beating heart, all of those things. Yes, in a mindful way. Sure. Like you want to be able to like look at it and not feel like it equals equals you, but trying to find a way to not get carried away with the emotional valence of how you feel about not being able to sleep as well as you'd like.
Boy, of all the shit I've got to say That is I think that's so important. You've got to go easier on yourself. You don't get to sleep. You don't fall asleep faster by stressing yourself out. And I I say that and that sounds rational to you, but how many nights in the last year have you, the listener, gotten mad at yourself and given yourself a stern lecture at 2 a. m. ? about going to sleep and how well has that worked over time. Right? Now I'm not saying this app is doing that, but I'm not not saying that. That whole like we wake up every morning it tells you how your sleep debt is going. Well shit, man. Like now I not only have a debtor, but I I've got this person who's who's like trying to call me all the time about the debt.
I'm every morning I wake up and find out that I haven't I haven't made the app happy with how much sleep I got with this make-believe fucking sleep debt thing. Which I think a cynical person would say, yeah, it keeps you really hooked on an app like this. And then once you get it right, you gotta be a good boy. And now Forgive me if this is triggering, it's a lot like weight. Don't you think? I was just gonna say I'm like this feels like I'm counting points. a whole lot you got you know what alex if you've hit your target weight oh my god it's almost swimsuit season you've got to be so happy you hit your target weight cheat day up no alarm cheat day For twenty-four hours, eat anything you want.
Bomb bum bum bongs, large mechs, pook slabs, poison crispy owl. Um right. So like and again I'm honestly I'm not trying to upset anybody by saying that 'cause I I realized from listening to the podcast I don't like anymore that it is very uh triggering to people to have like things like I didn't know counter on calorie count. Was that big of a deal to even mention? But like that's here's the thing. If the world gave you the metric of you need to fit in a size two dress by this date, and you did it. I guess congratulations, but like how did you get there? Is that sustainable? How do you feel? Are you are you turning pale and like blanking out? Like just because you hit the world's metric, or in this case, this app's metric.
Has that led to an improvement in your life? How do we look at this in a more holistic way? And I don't mean like have my have my food tracker, work with my sleep track. I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about like fucking sometimes you gotta just put the app down and go be a person. Especially if that app is encouraging you to become a little bit hooked on exactly the kind of behaviors that might be working against your best um future. There's a fasting app that it reminds me a whole uh lot of that. That's one of those like you fast at certain times a day, kind of. Yeah, like an intermittent of four uh uh uh no one yell at me it was four to I it was supervised for uh doctor stuff because he needed fast.
I'm like, oh, good to have it in Apple Health. But that is Oh like for like going in for like um Like like when you gotta fast for like lipid lipid tests. Yeah, to to get one of a special yeah, I had a weird uh um MRI thing. I'm lucky, I'm I'm all my tests are non-lipid ones. Like I'm I'm easy, like they just want to know if my li liver fell out. Well no no the new thing uh now too is you have to fast for brain stuff. Not have to, but but uh Any anyway I I believe that. That makes sense. I mean, there's probably in the same way that they didn't want food in my gallbladder when they did the CT scan. Hi everybody. I was in the hospital for three days. I hope you're doing well. Um, that made sense to me because they're like, hey, we just need to find out what the situation is with your, you know, these parts and if they're if they're full of delicious hospital food.
It's gonna scotch the whole deal. Tell me about the fasting app though. That's interesting. Oh similar sort of like I don't know gosh. Is this gonna be are we gonna hurt people talking about this? No, it isn't. I really don't want to hurry though because I'm trying to do the opposite of that. Did you did you see all these new animals, these new deer? the n You see there's like there's like ten gears. Yeah it's it's hard to tell though. Are these all the same? Well these look more like actual deer to me. These do not look like Oryxes. Their horns are so different. These look more oh wait. I should know these. These look more like a classic gazelle. Are these horns or antlers though? Horns are antlers.
See they're like different. They're the I I can't tell. Yeah, yeah, yeah. These are these look more like classic oh with those eyes like it not an ibex is it an ibex or a antelope antelope gone i have two different money pie thun shoots i've had in my head the whole time Antelope gone and a moose bit my sister once. Two things. I've been thinking this whole episode. Um and you go into this saying like, okay, I'm Jack Dorsey and like I I can't eat when the moon is in the seventh house or whatever. And so it it keeps track of what you're eating when when when you can oh my God, this sounds like s Oh it's it is I'm like this is just uh like a t a a tutorial for disorders like telling you when it's time for when it's time for fentanyl or something, you know?
Yeah. It was just like, oh, I wanna uh keep in mind this was pre uh multiple timers on um on iOS. You know? It's called my curlying. Yeah. I was like, alright, I don't want to mic curly all this stuff. Oi, what's all this in it? In my do app? Bring me into the reminders eight. Oh, go and get some of those fish. Oh, the crisps. Oh. Horry Hai chin Oh, voices are funny. Is that the end? raw transcript
