And the thing is that's how it is. I wasn't arguing but I don't know what to say anymore. She does stretching things. But I also understand why that grandpa is really less relevant than he used to be. He says, blah blah blah, I went in the jungle jungle, you know, uh I got up, I shot an elephant in my pajamas. There's a lot about that that's pretty funny. Oh goodness, uh, what's it called? Mm-hmm but your kind, which sounds like weed. I don't know. Which is kinda cool. How do you describe this? And Graham Parker. What's so funny about peace, love and understanding? It plays Petey in The Fantastic Mr. And it also started to crash Keynote, which is the most underrated software, I think, that Apple makes.

It's just really exciting. Yeah, and that whole that whole period kind of came in one. Yes. Is that any good? That's not uh that th there is an a whole, you know, genre now of talking about how something is is made. So what we're talking about here is a show called Patriot, and it's a show um as Jason Snell calls, he calls it Sad Spies, and it's about a guy who's in the CIA and he's got, you know, a lot of trauma. And that's good. You know, a f he fucking went on on tour. for plenty sweaty don't worry about that. Um life debt. y you know, I would I would like but I can speed that up for you. Are you talking about like somebody saves your life? I'm I'm there, baby. not argue with uh see I never know what to say anymore.

Uh correct, but you get to define the rules. Uh oh well I don't know what you you say you don't do things but I I don't like to think about it and and it it it And I will never know about any of them. Unless part of the life debt is you want me to find those out. I said they did the best they could that day. Appreciate that. That's a brace of kindness. You just said But this is something I just said? Uh it in that context, lazy means, you know, why would I spend more effort on anything than I need to, especially if that effort is not something that Like all those dumb stereotypes that you grow up with. I just feel like this summer's been so weird for so many reasons. the lazy thing, my relationship with lazy is becoming complicated because in this and this how do I even explain this?

If you don't know what all that stuff is and you're still running around, maybe you should try being lazy. Which again is one of those things that sounds bananas until you realize how many times you thought about a thing you're never gonna do and you still feel bad about it. I'd rather go gently into the good night, I think. I don't like need a pep talk about it. 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, any of those those years, the difference between being 18 and being 40 was not that big of a difference to me. I mean, wasn't there basically like my age, a little older and very old were the three ages. Doctor to doctor and like some people are in college for a really, really, really long time and it all just seemed like some kind of academic soup in my brain.

It's a good name. And listen, I just want to be super clear. But yeah, it was just weird that like it's just odd. There's neutrality. Those are the muggle boarders, but we don't care. what some people would consider more of new wave or power pop. He's so cute. Yeah. Sunny, Flowers for Charlie. And then it's really funny that the wheelchair he's in looks like something Franklin Delano Roosevelt would be in with like the like a wicker back and then he gets out. And and do you get I mean the joke in the the thing uh in my house that we laugh about because we're big we're we're pretty deep on Pacific Rim, is it your sense that Charlie is imitating? But the second one's uh it's got a lot of fun. I uh Can you do that while I get while I get a fresh iced tea?

uh we use our phones. What's the matter? You would just kept opening new drafts the whole movie. Sorry if you canceled What's the one? Tenant is was very frustrating for me in a lot of ways. There's an element of hard to follow, because first of all you can't hear fuck all anybody saying in it, but I think you definitely need to see it. Well, no, no, you don't and I'm I'm not even trying to say like each vegetables, do your homework, but if you like Christopher Nolan, in fact I would have to say that watching Tenet and being a little But you know, that's I think I'm not saying today and maybe I don't know. Like if you gave me the log line, you gave me the pitch on a lot of things, I would say that's not a story that needs to be told.

Right. Like the story itself, QED, is uh John Sarkees has beef with the story, but like just the visual, the storytelling of that, it's just it's just spectacular. Yeah. Anything the Beatles ever did in that approximately eight year period was something that there was no Beatles at the time. Rock and roll was. Moving his hips, that looks like fucking. uh as against what the Beatles are doing or have done or will do. Yeah. And and then Chevy Chase says it's by height. And I kind of don't care if anybody else sees that connection. being feted by um Margaret Dumont at a party after he's come back from his big expedition to Africa. Well what he's saying, it sounds like what he's saying is that he got up and he was wearing his pajamas when he shot an elephant.

It's just that like you you see my eyes, I'm narrowing my eyes just a little bit like Charles Bronson, but I'm smiling just a little bit because I'm like, oh wait. Mm, I I I didn't uh realize, but I uh n know that I enjoy a lot of podcasts that do discuss cliche of like, you know, chiseling oh away and then you get the pretty sculpture. I don't really know where I'm going other than None of us do, Alex. Just because like okay, well like hey, hi hi hi, you don't know me, but I subscribe to your to your paper. You know, about the spur of plint and tying down your baker knots and all that. Where I'm just so overwhelmed by how funny it is when people say certain things certain ways. Uh something along the line and again I won't get this right.

But I don't know if Letterman has may not necessarily the uh like chops to do yet, but but not the um confidence or power to do what he wants. And it's a fucking morphine show. adjusting here. Letterman's show. There's a bunch of guests that are just gonna be off limits. and has been on our show and is probably gonna do our show, will do our show, but even if they don't do our show, they're not gonna be on your show. the monkey cam, all these different things and the entire time. and that became so much a part of the character that it uh the character and the whole enterprise that he could really lean into that. And like leaning so deeply into that. The an old an old like kind of older like britt Betty White-ish woman comes out and says, okay, I was like number three.

I think for 1984 or something like that. Where you're like, oh, I got a quantum mania cup. Hey boys, how was school today? Still still there. You're you're you're lashing us to the mast of this ship that I just don't want to be on. Well yes, it was independent, it was creative, there was no um, you know, Conan O'Brien and needs a a friend, even with uh like t Twitter and a lot of things you do that it it it it isn't for everybody. uh I I think there's a very uh I used to kind of be the person who's like, if you're not making it for yourself Get to define what the life debt is. Good episode though, and we talk about creativity and I really really like it, so I still hope you listen. There see, there you go.

to you, which uh I am perfectly fine with. apartment or similar and now uh I I I can set the parameters for anything I want out of you. People create their own rules. I don't know. I don't know. Mm-hmm. way to say you changed your past. Oh, it is deeply unsettling. You have the in some ways the the sole uh responsibility for what goes on in your life, no even if it's somebody else's fault. Yeah. But just what you know how it is one of those things where like a couple different thought technologies sort of keep running into each other at the intersection. And I've been thinking about like I I cause you know lazy's one of those words that I'm I've always historically been fine to use about myself, but I I I th I've meant I can show historically is leading to the value of things that I make.

to work. COVID came along and it really feels like it's almost August in a couple three days. Right. I have a system where I touch, let's just go to the most basic one, you know, in terms of the big system, which is I have a system where and again to quote David Allen, um you should never think the same thought twice unless it's a thought you enjoy thinking. I think that I s I think he's using lazy in that way that like a person would hear then go, David Allen, you're the Goldman Sachs guy. turning that, pivoting that meaning a little bit to also mean like I'm not gonna do unnecessary I don't even want to say unnecessary. Felt kind of. I think absolutely I I have and absolutely I continue to.

I don't want to be unkind, but the kind of striving s 60-year-old man who keeps trying to show how relevant he is. I can can't it be both ways, just as you are seeing things, uh I'm not I'm not struggling, I don't think, over much with it. higher in your career or if you want to be a lawyer or a d or a doctor you might need to do uh more school but then It it was also defined by, okay, you've got your career, now you've got your kids, and then you've got your grandkids, and then you've got your golf or or whatever. Okay. I'm trash. Oh yes, the w the wizarding worlds um of the Hogwarts legacy. But like it's still England. Right? Well, there's a difference between living amongst a people and having your own like cultural border.

Is that right? Yes. But anyhow, you got all you got all that kind of stuff. a an actor or was he friends with the director and they were like, oh, you would be good at this. Twitter, I had a note about this. and playing in pubs and it was a kind of I guess you could almost call it like a roots rock revival, very much like You know, so anyway, bands that bands like Brinsley Schwartz, which would later whose members would later go on to things like Rock Pile. That's a Nick Lowe song that his band recorded in like 1973 or 4. sexy and stuff. And uh you you you see people who are like, oh you oh well you know, okay, look at look at fucking um Askaban, right? Oh Did the guy the guy stirring the tea with his finger in the air at the table?

on his hand, kind of on the table looking and you see him stirring like a cup using his finger and it makes the spoon go around. Um DB Weiss, I don't know their names. It is it is well, it is very, very powerful until you've got about 20 MP4s in it. in keynote and now it it's much more advanced and it's free. It gets um like live photo support and and all all that jazz. Folks, home screens. Um, and those are the kind of freaks too who have either the best or the worst home screens, so that's mostly why I'm offering it. Yeah. Uh uh yeah, uh change some things for this weekend because I I really wanna see I wanna see Barbie. to get through like the first half hour. I find it very challenging in a variety of ways.

Because I mean the the same thing is sort of tr people think inception doesn't hold up. I I mean I don't I hope I don't need to make a case that he has made good films. it's a really cool practice of not like ha ha in a in the Nelson way, but just like, okay, what Fine, but it it it doesn't have that m uh magic b when when I watched the Sopranos for for this show, my about the two thousands and that's just not how the the prequel uh felt and I don't know, it makes you uh mm think about the art you enjoy uh more I do. Yeah, and I mean it w this is one of those dumb things you can probably I've can I only would feel comfortable saying in retrospect, but like was this a story that needs to be told?

Uh okay, sure. into or across the Spider-Verse. or long and winding road or whatever. Which I don't know if you've lived with had the Beatles your whole life, it would be natural to think there's always been the Beatles and everybody's always loved them. Oh yeah, we're gonna be r uh racist even if a uh oh god, a white guy is is um changing and and I don't know to me innovating like so frequently they didn't have other movies to queue off of. Like that's a tall order to live up to kind of feeling? There's there's only mmm that's the thing. Yeah, okay. You d I don't think how? life hack things or you know the um c quotes in white boxes stuff Like that a moody blues song? No, I'm I'm wondering how you uh make things and not tear yourself apart wondering if it is actually the best Do you do you not think about that?

that made sense. There was some kind of a twist or an inversion that you hadn't anticipated at the beginning. talking on speakerphone or whatever falls on the ice. God, it's just so much. But the the the one of the most exciting feelings that I can have is that's is that spark. Yeah, Will uh Will Arnett, uh guy from William Grace and J uh Jason Baton. And it can get even so meta in that like there is an art to talking about how art is made. is like, you know, even without reading the article, like I I I obviously should read the article to write the headline, but there's times where I'm like, I think I know what you're trying to say here, but you could have said this a lot more clearly. Oh really?

And where he has to go and do his big piping. Fucking funny to me and there's some ways that people say things that are just like um not even a virus, just like j almost like more like a like a gas attack to me. Um, where can I get a hot meal at a reasonable price, you know? That leads to Harvey Picar, that leads to Larry Bud Melman, that leads to all that stuff, but it also leads to this wonderful running bit that other people do not do as well as Letterman, which is, can you believe how stupid this whole thing is? Hey, enjoy it while you can. But like the whatever that is fine. And the the the the one that ends up winning is like a a man and his nerdy twin sons who look like nerdlingers in a in an eighties movie.

Uh yeah, and it's like this probably won't last that long, but it's gonna be it's gonna be fun. Leno retiring and then Conan O'Brien uh taking over and then Coden being fired and and and stuff like that. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yes. It it that that's what it is called. It this was an only thing uh uh of vr like Nibu wasn't just like being the best at this. the late night show would would come to Chicago at at some point. Do th uh things that are uh for in what? Ga You're fun. But uh pressured speech, which I had never heard of. No, it's it's just when you owe someone a great deal of gratitude. And their life. are an incredible person who has Are you dying? Yes. And then like you either I I can think of this two ways.

Uh, which is like um you you can't wish for infinite wishes, right? You let the debt out of the bottle. Yes, it is indeed your pleasure. of the idea that a kink could exist in in my world. And it's been well established that I don't want to kink shame anyone, but I will forever be it in shame just b because by, you know, by m horny men and and queers. Uh, that's uh you just say you you've done worse things during the day. It's a different topic. I imagine feels controversial. you know, in like the old old school meaning of that word. Oh, absolutely. And then but lazy, I think, when we think about lazy, you think about like hillbillies in comic strips, or like, you know, stereotypical like Mexican people who are always wanting to sleep.

I think it's he certainly did not mean it as an I I've never accomplished anything. the collision at that whatever that existential intersection was is just this idea that I really do think it's valuable and who was I talking to about this? And constantly frazzled. Don't just say you're gonna, you know, improve your sleep hygiene and go to bed or whatever. is the stretching exercises that you do that prevent injury. you know, uh uh unintentionally use a word that that has dumb cultural freight to it. you realize these are things I really should have been thinking about the whole time. In it as a method of teaching, it has a meaning. And that's something I think this is worth thinking about as you get older.

from what I've observed of your work that you've ever tried to perform something. question. So like, oh, grandpa's no fun. Well you could say really? Ye yeah. That attitude is ch changed a lot, but it just that that was like the definitive bride. Fair, there's the Mustang and then the lockpicking lawyer. I am being selfish because I'm like, oh, I remember that. I can't do it. You know, it's like, oh, Ale Alex is is free. Yes, but her parents are m um muggers. Yes. See, they have regular they still have regular countries, right? Uh th thank you. Uh oh yeah, Fleur and Robert uh uh crumbs. There's all the things, of course, that is the movie where it becomes very, very clear that this is just not a safe environment for anyone.

Oh gosh, I don't know. Yes. He's a he's a Jonathan a lantern. The other guy. Didn't he uh help direct it? Oh, there's a second uh Pacific Grim. But uh th I got so many wonderful submissions of home iPhone home screens that I am going to absolutely rip apart. rudimentary animation in that just uh CGP Gray in in college to do animation uh animation wow to do animation I just did uh the most basic ass keyframes But why I actually think that this is interesting to talk about is um how Yeah. something at a certain time. I continue to adore all of Chris Nolan's movies, which is why I'm just not gonna watch Tenet. Which I believe on Letterbox was what even is this? maybe a little bit of uh spoiler skip this chapter.

But but that like oh but they're he's they're still swinging for the fences. people beat the shit out of the Beatles when they first came to the U. creative thing of you don't want to just be the best at what you do. things you make because you're a writer. that this is something that is up to your standard. that's really kind of torturous in how he lays it out. You know, like uh like a you know, to hold your hold your two hands in front of you, you know, with the palms down. Would be one way to think of it. You know? invest heavily in many of those or any of those ideas, but I am aware when I go something goes, aha. gravity and ice created this situation that was a bummer. Now that's a really basic example of that.

There's there's a let's put it this way, let's just put it simply. And then the process of chipping away everything that's not an elephant in pajamas is intoxicating to me. why or why not something is funny and uh that probably goes b back to yeah uh right um and I don't think I can can you give me just is there one off the dome that I'd know? Uh it's on fucking HBO, really? Um you're i yeah, it is smart uh smartless. And uh the one Natasha Leone is good, and I have not listened, but they have Letterman live in Brooklyn, so uh I don't know. Very uh uh it it it feels more talk showy. somebody r wrote because i uh I don't know, you see that the bones are there and uh the s the In in infamous like really, really long YouTube uh essays about something.

And I I'm in that like very stressful episode where he has to carry the guy around in the backpack and then he has to go deliver Leslie's fucking plate thing. And now he sings folk songs to help him with his feelings. But words are funny. so well and he leaned into it so hard that he came up with these running bits that n nobody listening will remember, but shaking little thing and saying, Does this put you in the mind of fairies? And oh, it like a like a um a bidmam ty type thing? But I don't mind the swelling. Like this this weird bit and like I'm just so glad stuff like that exists. I like that. Conan was a pop culture hero, it was clear that it was probably not going to last But watching um I I I don't know, just like watching a touring uh almost like not vaudeville, but uh a v a variety show was things.

thing. it's it not worth it and I think m my opinion about that has changed a lot because with uh, you know, quote p platforms and and but it's quote platforms, yeah. Like it's uh it's a it's a journey that has no map. What you had for breakfast, I uh you know, sorry, I didn't I didn't mean to step on your clit No, you I have a life debt to you. Rules are what make games interesting because then you can find, you know, Kobayashi Maru solutions and stuff. Yes. Because I heard that you had uh in uh started to enjoy solitaire um uh on Twitter, even though it's not a g n not a game, not a game, but there are so many different kinds of solitaire because I'm trying to follow your bit, Alex. I don't know what that means.

probably poor decisions, uh, or kind of not fully thought out decisions, or things that I do to temporarily forestall pain, or just You know, any given thing happened, like, uh, what what that person could have done better? If you i I think if you make me a certificate that says you owe me a life debt, I think that's not only when it becomes official, but when it becomes something I can put on my wall. Something's in the mail. Lazy means lazy, but in context it means different things. Resting more? And I'm still recovering. About being the laziest guy. H s so is it the COVID stuff that's making you re-evaluate the the laziness more? is out of whack right now and um it's everything to begin with everything with all my various conditions is already kind of a tightrope walk um It's more more just a way of saying like I um now that I am old, I can s I see a lot of stuff from a different angle and a lot of stuff in and what's interesting about getting older is or ironic in some ways about getting older, one of the things, is that um I see a lot of stuff from a different side now and it's not that I see it any differently.

Um, it's not that I've developed some kind of radical attitude about it. I I think mm and m maybe this is another Yeah, it's uh I I I don't think it's a good thing. But I slept a lot yesterday. That Fleur is in what? Oh, w uh I see y I mean yes they do, but it's like kind of like World War Two also existed, but w you know, they weren't really thinking about it. Uh they they did not think much of it, according to uh J. The owls were were for it. Oh god. Which was th they were they were like sort of like pub rock veterans. really fucking good and a little more hard edge, not thin Lizzie level of hard edge, but pretty hard edged. That this is this is wild. Their best known song and one of the greatest songs ever is called Common People.

week in that it is uh Coxmas in July. I started following um Guillermo Del Toro on Twitter and he's delightful. In closing parentheses, I just can't actually leave our mall open. I I did, but then uh my brain wasn't working so well. Be because I uh already have preconceived notions of tenant. I I do uh love watching a director s swing for the fences and when there I'm not saying tenant is a miss because I haven't seen it, but when there is a miss Felt the gravity of Empire Strikes Back. The the the thing I I I I wanna I you know I like to say lots of things that don't make a ton of sense. I didn't say it was complic it something doesn't need to be complicated for it to be uh good or important uh you can you can do because sure it is the best it's it's the best that you did th that day.

And uh I I've always thought that was uh one of those very there's a lot of Chevy Chase's lines in that movie are very funny. And and those like smash into each other and now do that thing where you like make a vagina with your fingers where you smash these two together. probably let's for the sake of argument, we'll say a single point of like intersection where these two plates ran into each other and there was a connection. R. It's and and their comedy is just so different that I find that interesting. I I think words are funny and and I I don't like the genre you're talking about as much as you, but what I do like at least thinking about, I don't know if it's interesting to listen to. You know, ex explaining about uh about uh how how how we get the plates and the and the joints together with the joist.

Do you think that'll have an impact on our relationship? Tacitly, which was like, don't be the tonight show. She is directing it. The way I feel about Blue Sky of I don't think this is gonna last, but it's gonna be a good idea. Um oh uh prediction. Just kind of a a moment in time that I don't know if people appreciated as much as I mean uh oh it would be Yeah, disaster, yeah. You like the ones who don't get caught. Challenge podcast with Alex Cox and Merlin Mann. What is a usual way to start a podcast? Yes, or a j a j a gin as oh, I I'm white, so I think it would be like Robin Williams' genie. Mm-mm. Uh I don't know, some like a uh uh a Chicago t-shirt or something. Well thank you again, Alex.

just some optimism in in me. Catholic thing of like, okay, your preschool, grade school, high school, college, and gr uh grad school, and then adults. for two schools with their own unusual modes of transit to arrive? Whatever that's called, uh Spinglebats or whatever. I I well no, I I thought that that um Game of Thrones boys had done another It's Always Sunny. we uh are this b by uh we, you know, the Apple nerds are really, really changing how You are uh very uh you're very protective of your time and attention. But it's so ambitious in that way that it sort of like if you remember watching, you know, um uh Inception Yeah, or the um uh I was actually thinking the um like s sequel soprano film or the the prequel soprano film and it's like yeah that's f Big not biggest, but um one of my favorite takeaways was oh, this is a movie in the 2000s, but also it feels like a movie.

Or or what have you. watching Empire Strikes Back when I was it god like a fucking baby. Where there was certainly there's been times, especially say in the mid-sixties, where it's difficult not to evaluate everything in this entire genre. because I'm thinking of the abortive book as you say, and uh thinking about how Uh I I I don't know. Uh I mean I um speaking of Caddyshack, I don't I I don't keep score. You know, there's a little little connection right there. um depending on what sort of energy gets created as a result. Right? That's uh yeah. Yeah, it's uh it it's because I think the Marx brothers knew how to wear their hats and it was just the right amount. he was he was the like before Joan Rivers ever came along, he was kind of the default guest host for the Tonight Show.

And um I imagine a lot of people looking at me on the internet and going, oh see any of the news? And I I ha uh I predicted that Lena Dunham would play Poly Pocket, but no no no. I would have uh liked it. uh late night show or rather l uh like rogue variety show going on tour. No one celebrates the the guys who don't run into geese and fall into a river. bearing on what it means to be a person and and and do things in real life rather than just publicly performing some kind of uh constant fretfulness about, you know, all how busy you are. I think lazy is one of those words that has a lot of cultural baggage and so I'm trying to use it less because I don't want to use But yes, part of that, but also part of it is just trying to think about like becoming a better version of who you are rather than becoming a more like flashy version of what you've never been.

That isn't a version uh uh of you. Mm-hmm. I don't I uh say Ed Sharon. Yeah. CoxFM at gmail. You know, ta tu Todd is nice enough to be like, nah, you don't you don't need to do that. No, I'm on letterboxed and why would you need to be on letterboxed right now? The very the the variation in uh stars and uh r reviews on this makes me uh curious Made less special. The I I I think there you said something interesting though in watching I I like movies. Which he does, he's a very good golfer in in the uh tie, is a very good golfer in the movie, right? Because well no no no what I'm trying to say is it's a funny joke 'cause Ted Knight says that to him and you know, he's the straight man and then Chevy Chase, who's tall, says by height.

But but the the the the nut of it is that when there is some kind of a collision of those matrices, there tend to be w what the results of those collisions tend to be one of three sorts of things. And Grou and Groucho Groucho dropped his. It's you know, m um just in the coming months. deconstructing the sentences of uh a a joke and i i i i don't know i it it's kind of like watching um how wording in particular can be made funnier. Don't um don't use Johnny's guests. I mean, I wonder if we'll still remember Barbie that fondly because believe me, I said something along the it's gonna get stupid and it's gonna get huge and it's gonna become I think the word I used was insufferable. And I mean it it it it it did for a a w while but yes.

so refreshing and it it I think the best touring podcasts now kind of Did did that have to do with what you said might have been an argument with your kid, but what really just sounded like a l lively discussion? And the desire to make yourself seem busy and important Yeah, and in Harry Potter. Today I found out the guitar player from a band, a 70s band I like was in yesterday, sorry, yesterday, day before, found out that uh the guitar player from a 70s band I like was on Game of Thrones. Anyways, uh I love stuff like that. So just d uh just d ask me what you want to ask me. I. It's going to roll out some serious fucking shit, and you're gonna look back on this week, and it's gonna be like all the times we've got a plastic cup that we got in a movie, like a corn holder.

There's a great book, uh war with late night, war oh, um the war for for late night, um, about the uh whole f f uh fuck up that was What's a disaster? It's just a really I think it's a fairly clever way of saying you can't change the past. So anyway, it's just the idea that like I I especially like I've had COVID and like I've lost I talked to Madeline about this last night. Or is that part of your plan? Yes. that it it I went a little bit overboard and um it became a little uh uh a a bit much and a little bit too long for the show perhaps Well it there are there are some um I know uh I'm very thirsty and sweaty right now, but there are uh nice folks who uh support us on Patreon that did not get theirs in on time because they just listened to the episode.

And like you're like, oh man, this guy really swings. Uh I I don't know where I'm going with this. Right. someone d draw or seeing a rough draft of what some Uh one thing that that I'll just repeat briefly, which is that when so Carson's production company had a big role in like they produced. Can you believe not just oh we shouldn't be on the air, but like there's the whole the whole enterprise of like really this is the best we can do. You're yeah, no, you're you're you're I I th I j I think about that a l a with um how I I I'm I'm I'm developing a um an unusual relationship with the word lazy. I will try not to um I don't want to abuse it. It just does not seem uh not that it doesn't seem like a idea you w you wouldn't try on, but it doesn't seem Oh you getting a bottle?

Cho Chang. Can you imagine what they could make? Uh the the w widgets and the um standby mode, like it's a different world in our house now, basically. Why are you making a noise? Again, I don't want to say say lazy. P. And Lemon goes, they pelted us with rocks and garbage. Like backstage and trying to figure this stuff out and working out the material for the tour. Um I didn't say Siri. I can already hear uh my even myself. I think he means in a very specific way of saying, I have a system where I touch everything once and nothing gets dropped and I'm not going to stress about it. Like a squeaky sound. No, no, no. That that that was a newsletter? No, no. So sometimes, you know, it's just the most basic kind of like brain dead shit where you're like, oh here's a here's a connection that delighted me.

You know? Oh goody. I'm sorry about that. That's another kind of thing I like because it's not uh Letterman yet. Do that, like taking the best of small special things in different cities, and uh it reminds me of how you treat Hello? Okay. Yeah, so anyways, you know, doing doing uh doing doing doing the best I can every day and uh sometimes I remember to do better and other times I don't and and then I'll take a nap Was it a I'm not not an as calling it a nepotism thing sounds sounds gross, but like was he Oh ooh. Should I should I should I do that? Wait, send a raven, send a crow. It's a genre of music that uh got weirdly popular in the 70s in the UK and w it's called pub rock because the people who were playing it were mainly touring around, especially England.

Oh, save I'll save it for this show. And so that's a lot of pressure for somebody. And the example that he gives is if like the the pretentious let's look at it this way, so the tech bro. I I enjoy m yeah m m messed up whatever. Not just because a constellation of things around that. They uh the in Marine or whatever, right? As far as nepotism, I mean I think yes in that sense that you'll see these wonderful things you get an English show. Do you like that? Yeah. So be ready. Like that's not she doesn't see that as being lazy or a waste of time. So that band, Dr. Oh, yeah. And that's and and the Kessler's thing, which again he explains it, the mechanics of this are very silly and kind of approach like the earth sitting on top of elephants level stuff.

Probably shouldn't do podcasting, but I've noticed I would say you shouldn't do air traffic control. What what is it you're doing about that about? But uh yeah, yeah. Love those. Wow. It was either like five years or like five hundred years. You got Ducks Deluxe, she got or um yeah, Ducks Deluxe, she got um uh the one I was thinking of though is this band called Doctor Feel Good. Next week we will be uh uh uh celebrating Coxmas and I will be presenting Oh, I mean uh if fucking uh uh I I didn't realize Elvis uh was like um y you know, this the star not not star, but the the like What? But a and there's the um God, what was the name? Right. But like they were breaking the fourth wall. If you like Conan O'Brien, I recommend it just because I feel like I can't promise this, but I feel like you get to see a little bit of like how he actually is.

But no, I I sometimes I'm lazy i i in the conventional sense of the word. Like for me, like, you know, okay, again, I and I'm I'm not a scholar of this stuff, but one year I did my independent study project, I told you about this, on that book, The Act of Creation by Arthur Kessler, which is a very simple idea. Like and again, I'm not I'm not here I I'm probably getting this wrong, whatever, but here's the point. I don't know. Well, that's the thing. Uh he was I love how much Ron loves Victor Crumb. But like obviously let's I'll set aside my the the one joke I know about the wizarding world, which is that it it's very irresponsibly run and you can't trust anybody in authority. Oh, now I know.

I gotta be in the right mood for a movie, you know, but I I like a movie. No, I'm sorry. Mm-hmm. Nope. I think she's the thing is she's Scottish, which is kind of fun. Oh, it's a really good song, but it's one of those songs you gotta listen to all the way through because it's got parts. I think at this point, 39 minutes in, we should probably mention that we're calling, as we say in in sports ball, we're calling an audible. I think there's there's a fair amount of stuff like that. It's absolutely stunning. Um, Carson Productions or whatever alongside Worldwide Pants, whatever. You said it's a life down. Don't worry. Um I I mean, well, I uh it it was explained to us like, oh, like grad school is what you do if you want to I had no idea what grad school was even when as I was entering college.

I literally don't care. And I didn't get to pick whether this happened. What are you doing? What did Todd I'm sorry, what did Todd say your what? But then you see the implementation of that and you go, oh my goodness. Hmm? Okay, here's I think I think one of the critical things with L I mean, because he'd done been doing stand-up for years. I was fucked yesterday. Yeah, like it's it's um th thrown me away is is someone uh giving Dobby by Friday a sock. Smart, is it Smartless, the the show that just not just, but recently started. If you're not. Like five plane crashes. Hello, hello. Oh my gosh, thank you, Alex. Either way, because you get to define the parameters. You're having quite a uh quite a run of kindness today.

Uh no. Do you watch you you watch Patriot, like for the show, right? Could be because sometimes regular solitaire gets boring. Oh. Fleur Fleur from the Bobtons. Feel Good, had this amazing guitar player, um, who wrote some of their best songs and he played Sir Ellen Payne on Game of Thrones. I'm gonna say that if you would like to still submit your home screen, you can send it to Alex. I it's such an affliction and now I I just I can't it's but but yeah, I mean Conan O'Brien can't stop. I don't know. I'm still my immune system is still struggling to catch back up with homeostasis. I mean I wasn't gonna say this is your your Steve McQueen. Like in Game of Thrones, those countries are not. It it's it's it's a lot of fun.

And they both turn and look at the look straight at the camera and go, They pelted us with rocks and garbage. Yeah, yeah. It's i well, I mean, um no one's sweatier than me right now, but it's so special. It's uh no, no offense. I I think around and no, I know I think I know what you're thinking of. Yeah, how? And it all comes down to the fact that both of those are perfectly cromulant English sentences that mean very different things. Enjoy the Barbie thing, because get ready. Oh my god. It's a good bit. Love them. How do you put this? Culturally they were uh they were they were neutral. Fox. It's the second one's a little more gay. Probably almost as weird and inappropriate as that. Hello. Well, okay.

Kind of sounds like the selfish gene, but go ahead. That's how, you know, they could they communicated and uh then there was these crows in Game of Thrones. And there's others. Oh, yeah. And then that was just the beginning of it being hard to get with. Yeah. I suspect that I think Phil Donahue's dating my grandmother. Oh there we go. This I've made a lot of certificates in there for th for people and things. Uh uh uh three minutes ago you said uh I was arguing with my kid. Which one may be. Yes, yes, yes. Uh uh I on on Twitter, is this a joke you made or a joke you made? There's all the you like guess what? One of my all-time favorites, where he brings out a bunch of people, it's the stupidest da-da fucking thing I've ever seen in my life.

That it and like there's no way you can't well the most basic th w meaning of that to me is you can't change the past. Uh other ones, Game of Thrones. The You mean like the they're talking about the the pressure. I'm not sure I have I mean the standards that I have are are are very um strange and unique to me probably, but I think I'll send you a couple episodes I think you will love. And so he brings out people to come out and say something and then they have an applause meter to see what people think should be the new catchphrase for next year. Right. Perhaps, yeah, yeah, yeah. Crows are the ones on the wall. So, you know, there's this, you are you familiar with that phrase pub rock? Uh no, I just um I fucking wasted fucking ticket.

I mean there were other bands. Oh no, is that what black people do? I mean, uh this sounds a bit dramat a bit dramatic, but certainly an unusual way to start a podcast. Mm-hmm. He has a very distinctive face in a in a good idea. com, but there's not much of a chance that I will get an offer that. Uh let's let's keep these stakes uh uh a l low. I put on Twitter last night, but I just rewatched that episode with and there's just w why Leslis Leslie's The idea that every day everybody's doing the best they can. You know, it's i at first I'm like, okay, this is a cute businessy thing to say. If I if someone were it at least don't believe in closing parentheses, do you? Do you mm str struggle w with I I I don't know.

No, I'm I'm just wondering I don't understand what you're talking about, Alex. I see that connection. They were doing the point is there, like, okay, so then now we do that thing where we talk about why something's funny, which is of course always hilarious. I I like to know what the rules are. Uh pulp, what mmm, the that's an awesome band name, Pulp Yeah, do you ooh yummy, get a fresh iced tea. Absolutely. You you yeah, you are doing it because you're only one you and you're you're like I'm record four podcasts, it's not complicated. That's funny because that's you know, Jeeves and Worcester kind of stuff, deflating the bigness of that high status character. Oh well life dead. When you say lazy well All the people who don't want to work and the man managers apologize with that piece of paper in the window saying, Sorry for the slow service, no one wants I mean, I don't want to get into it, but like like I I explained to somebody, I forget who, like I just my immune system is is kind of He moves slow and doesn't like to he has to sit down all the time at Disney World.

You get in a bottle? Uh please don't correct me. But yeah. We look at it and go, oh, you know, here's a here's a dissolve for my 60-point slide. Uh let me find find. That's weird. And that is how I in enjoy it. Um, three kindnesses are called trips. I'm familiar with the reference. Oh I'm sorry, yeah, Pacific Grim. And then Letterman goes, I hate the itching, but I don't mind the swelling. Um could be, yeah, yeah, yeah. But but I don't know, si uh sixty doesn't feel that old and I How do they let the staff know? The little pub place. Do you ever think that you've attempted to be a a flashier person? Yeah, I think it depends on where you want to put me. But like there's a lot about like wouldn't they have had to do a lot of preparations and like isn't there a lot they would need to do to be ready for And so I I compare myself to other golfers by height, only it's not golf and I'm not tall.

Matrices. Have fun with the Barbie thing and the Barbie Fymer. I mean, I'm just trying to I'm trying to establish that we understand that there's a concept of there's gotta be some kind of rules, otherwise the fabric of reality tears. Resting more? We care about like what wizarding school you you went to or who your family is. And uh they weren't just the best, they were the only. You mean you mean like as in I'm trying to figure out what you're asking and I'm I want to help. I like that actress a lot though. How are you, Merlin? You know what I mean? Yeah. You might be constantly frazzled. But like are how good were you at estimating somebody's age and what that meant when you were a child? But like the song that Elvis uh you know Elvis Costello Elvis Costello does that song.

Really? Um and so I I was wondering, are are you asking like and so does that make you try harder? Like, don't step on Carson's stuff. Or like, you know, but you know what I mean? And the method of teaching is all of the running around that you're doing right now and all of your like fretfulness about not knowing what's happening and how many projects you have and what the next action is, you'll learn this language in time. The Bill Batons I think are supposed to be French, hence the name. What do you mean about that? Or whether it's a thought terminating cliche or like which angle? It's like they overshadow they what's the phrase we used to use that takes all the oxygen out of the room? Well kind of.

And anyways, it's really the the first season of that show is so special to me. He he did real interviews with with people um rather than just worrying about it. And uh Why do you have a life debt to me, Alex? And I think that there's an idea to that that I think if you really sit with that, it becomes very upsetting to realize how many days you were actually kind of doing the best that you can. But like it's no, I mean but like it when you say something like sixty doesn't seem all that old. That's what I'm saying. I like things like this. Oh okay. That's how I felt oo uh watching um In the movie Animal Crackers, uh the great Groucho Marx plays Captain Jeffrey Spaulding, and he's And you're not running to like be healthy, you're running because you love to run and all of those kinds of things.

I think we all do. I don't think I don't think I struggle with that. He's and then four episodes later, Lakeman, who's shown himself to be not he's got a lot on his mind, he gets up he comes up and he just fucking kills it. Did you watch the whole thing? Yeah, yeah, yeah. You always you you've gotta always drag it right into like something that happened like yesterday. I didn't say I didn't say. Yes. It's just something that that uh you got out of your bottle or But like if you could have done better than well if you could have better done better, wanted to better, or tried to do better and did better, you would have done better, but you didn't do any of those things. Well I I uh I mean maybe there's That was something, right?

Uh that's how she studied sculpture at St. Not challenging because I just simply didn't understand it, but because I went, mmm, is that really how that would work? Now you go. Nope. Okay. Okay. Like another voice of a d of another on a given day I might go, what do you what are you talking about? Like there's you have the I no I'm sorry this shades a little bit into uh unintentionally into Ayn Rand territory, I guess, but like Everyone in my life. Our kids had had one job and then has another job. And you got um and and the thing is, you know they think this because everybody almost everybody from the north has a northern England accent. No, they don't. I am not trying to make a case that this is any kind of movie other than something that somebody who loves movies should probably see.

S. Is it a plane? I listen to you uh your other podcasts. And I think accepting that in stride rather than trying to be the sort of, you know She's all grown up now. So Oh, you don't want to waste the waste the ticket on uh it would have just slid right off your brain. And then sometimes it's like, you know, like with the new Miles Spider-Man movie. How how and why? Dave's the Dave's the master of ceremonies going, can you believe this terrible thing is on TV that you're watching right now? People wouldn't like like what they would like, but it's suck. Wow. Oh my gosh, I'm gonna have to really think about that. What is your relationship to Lazy recently? So in that sense, lazy, I think he's he's meaning it uh in a way I often mean it, which is uh in that let's call it the David Allen meaning of lazy.

Uh it's got John Boyga, which is kind of weird. Okay, you got the guys from aren't there guys from like Mumford and Son or something in the red wedding scene? We just we all we do is we start talking about another thing. And now I need to go make that little thing. It's one of my favorite favorite movies. Um but it uh you know that's where they talk about why video games are uh fun to play. You're never having Bob Hope on here, obviously. Wait, what are we doing? That's another part that can be fun about game design. That's what I was I was thinking of. Yeah. I really doubt they sat around and said like let's do a song like the Knickerbucker song Lies which is a great song. And I sometimes feel like I'm a golfer who evaluates h his success by height.

Like you wouldn't want your grandma to fall down on the ice unless she sucks. You slam them together and then sometimes you go, and th the what's one of my one of my favorite animating feelings about wanting to make anything? There's a joke there. Alex, last week everybody was all excited about Barbie. Oh, just it was funny and creative and independent or what? Oh, I already forgot what that means. You're gonna want me up on that wall. Ah, there we go. It was just you watch that episode of Gilligan's Island with the mosquitoes and you really get the idea how stupid people thought. It's it's a kinder way and I think a more productive Put on my put on my cute little genie outfit. Really? Like I I think a lot about the order that words go in.

Yep, yep. This week's challenge? Are you familiar with a life debt? I mean very maybe so. What is it? He was just supposed to be like this the the the crazy Jewish German guy. Because I am forget about it forever? I'm I'm I'm there. No, no, I think I think you're doing great. Valuable. That was the whole thing. I I forget. And the guy oh did you know that Mac is in a scene in Game of Thrones from Sunny? So so like something like Martin Scorsese like New York, New York or something. But um Godfather II, where like it's not just a it's not simply a matter of it being arguably as good as or better than the first. Yeah, Letterman used to go to like Miami and stuff. What is happening? Like you just by by being by being somehow?

I appreciate that. Like for example, David Allen, famously, at least to me, says, I'm the laziest man you've ever met. Yes. You you did just there. Like like uh Victor there there's like the r the Russian ones. How how I how I think about what a screen is and what it's for is ch uh on the iPhone has changed a lot. Uh I listened to the one with Ryan Johnson and really enjoyed it because Mattel, based on the success of this, that he predicts. Okay, so this is a bit. Yeah, like they're like, oh, those are the muggle border like He really goes for it. But also then this larger, like broader admonition, I think Um and just I it it wasn't Wait, wait, hang on, hang on. Really do that and make that something that is okay in the way that, for example, with my wife, like she she goes to Pilates, she runs.

Oh god. It's it i it it is least in the film, the wizarding film, she's uh from Scott Wizard. They are analogous. But here's my sense of this. Oh, second one as in like the the gang beats Boggs, like two of those. Well anyway, sorry about that. One is that, oh my gosh, I will owe you forever, or there's no way I could ever owe you, so you can just keep treat me like an existential ATM for favors. And you're like, yes, but that's not what I said. Not just that word, but no, absolutely I think you're totally right. Like, oh, oh, I spent three three hours uh with with my family just uh playing playing board games. Of course I'm also currently obsessed with the band pulp. You tell me. She's so cute.

I'm great, Alex. Yeah absolutely. Yes. But the idea is you have these matrices, or think of it as planes Like uh uh like what's the the theme type of thing? And I thought I forget what it's called, but I I really enjoyed that. Well what if everyone survives? I just like to and and furries, I like to believe that none of them have kinks Well, are you frazzled because you've been making a bunch of stuff that's amazing? And then by the mid-70s that's turning into this other thing that eventually kind of goes to if you think about like like like Dave Edmonds, Rock Pile, that kind of stuff that I'm obsessed with, that's that that's sort of like If you don't know what that is, I'm linking the timestamp to explaining it last week.

You have to remember that when the Beatles did anything that they did between say sixty-two and seventy I just don't know quite what the joke is yet, but there's something there, and I know with near certainty that there's something there. It's really funny. Where you're like, oh, I barely remember this movie. Not for me, because I'm bad at it. No, I'm not sure. And I don't even think it means like I can't be bothered to get off the couch this week. It doesn't seem very nice, but yeah, I guess so. Okay. Like like what? And the the the many different ways that that can be funny. I uh put in the the show uh the the uh show notes it it it's boring. I mean, it she didn't ask me, but if I were to say, I would say, well, that's part of your quality of life.

I see the same things I've seen my whole life from a different side, and I think I understand both sides. And and she's she was in tenant and it really freaked me out. Okay. I'm not saying tomorrow, but I think at some point you should watch it because it's it is really something. Oh God, our daughters are watching this. No, I mean I'm just doing the best I can every day. None of us do. I'm finding I don't like the word lazy. I am this is this is where I actually no we can we can tease this out The pr not even the pressure. Oh yes. What? Just because I I even though I don't like games, I am inclined to understanding that In in my world, despite being a r surrounded Yeah, I make I make little goof em ups all the time, but I've been thinking a lot about that thing I say that Um, but it's more uh it's actually not that interesting.

I yeah, I'm I'm going I'm not sure. Let's say how careless how how careless some people can be with like Why is that so funny to me? Um w what's next on that? Letting yourself rest more, very valuable. And like how did nobody know about it? Oh he builds models. Everything everywhere all at once is a very special movie. Uh it felt the way I I it it it it it felt like You want to be the only person. But you What? Uh most we could talk really mostly here about the comedy idea. I don't know the details. No, my goodness. It's it's something that happened every uh I uh every like It it it really it took me three times. And we're adding in this like it's so long and it's got these two completely different chronological stories going on and you know what I mean?

Just carpet baggy. Uh if you're going for clarity here, I think there's a way you could do this more clearly. I think we have more problems in your mouth. I don't even I don't even I don't I don't know me neither. Oh. Okay, I'll be back in thirty seconds. How he got in my pajamas, I'll never know. I know you know this. Somebody wrote these lines. I'm just yeah, I didn't just I w I did I don't like to think about what people do during the day because I know some people get horny. I imagine it would be I don't know if I can make a squeaky sound, but like I'm thinking like that. That was really something. I've retained a lot of information from watching the TV show Game of Thrones. Yeah. It was directed and written uh by uh D.

I'm I'm gonna do a pitch for folks who haven't seen Spider-Man and this I don't mm Yeah, yeah, no, she she is she's good. No, I haven't talked about the I I refuse to even I'm not uh Is this a transition? How are you? Yes. K. Yeah. There's a shot. Yeah, he looks like he was like carved out of a block of granite. I I I can be part of the life debt. It's probably pretty cool. But they sent that that's what the that's what the uh owls are are are for. You're talking about the thing where somebody saves your life. Mm-hmm. And I accept it. That's alright. Me and Jon Snow. Is it still getting updated? Like a woman with money problems who wants to divorce her husband discovers that she has power across many universes.

But oh but even um no And not not in a mean way, but in like just uh an utterly joyful way. Oh I dipped on the second season. Yeah, I like you too, Alex. I think as in most fantasy there in fantasy worlds You go like, okay, like um Pedro Pascal, the place he's from is kind of like Spain, kind of like where he's from. Rowling, who just keeps dropping little uh They did not think much of it, therefore World War II didn't exist. Do you know the song? Uh Sean Hayes. But I thought your tickets last week. Not I don't want to say hard to follow, hard to get with. That's funny because language language is weird. But the important part was Fred DeCordova had made it very clear to Dave, look You know, it's a case against sweatiness title.

I I know the famous part of the song. I I I don't even know. Um I don't know. What are you talking about? Even if it's stupid shit. And she goes, I hate the itching. This is Due by Friday, a week Yeah. Um let's let's let's stay with that. I mean um I would put myself in a Diet Coke can, but again, you're your choice. That's what I'm asking you is do do do the countries that we know of not exist in the wizarding world? And then there's uh I uh like the I I don't know why I don't think there's a I mean there's all the stuff of the implementation details of the Tri Wizarding Cup. And um but so he says he says how do you how do you keep you know, how do you keep score? And that's The the the few Mark Marin podcasts I I enjoyed was actually them, um the him and a guest But like anybody who's coming through town Uh I didn't I didn't s it I didn't.

What does that mean? I think a lot of people's attitudes are changing towards that word n Ye r right. Yes. So it's it's And so I was getting my IC. Why would it matter? And if you were to change uh your schedule, it must be really fucking good. And you start to really see like people in videos talk about how there are these themes through his movies, not just visually, although that's part of it. I think it I th I think it does I'm not trying to make a case that any of And of course, I think Dave is probably frustrated by that, but they did that. You can't even ask for a fourth wish. Mm-hmm. That's the sing that's that's the singer from Stone Roses. Here's the thing about tenant. Not true. What are we doing?

Thank you for saying that. I think that's that's wholesome. Something is in the mail, but I will also create something in pay. I would need a fucking mind map to explain how this idea works in my head. Don't feel sorry for me. Uh no. There's a little like a panning shot and you see this guy with like like his head. If any of you like uh canceled anything to listen to this episode, we'll have it. Todd gave a good review to Tenet. And it's n it's not the spark of, oh, here's a funny joke about shooting an elephant in your pajamas. Mmm. What are the worst things? Which I think is It's very in the true sense of the word, it's a very existential kind of insight. So Harry Potter, like I th I thought that Hermione lived in London.

Yeah. Something happened where there was there was a single point. And that one has God, he's so fucking funny. And David Allen talked But uh parentheses It's i or rather I don't know if leather le Leatherman. I'm good. No, tell me about it. Well, I mean we're all dying, but hopefully I I'm dying more slowly than uh Danny, do you do drugs? And I think not the f not by any long shot, even one of the top twenty funniest Groucho lines, but one of his most famous lines, still very funny. But what then he pivots to, but i the elephant was in my pajama which visually, just imagine an elephant in Groucho Marx's pajamas being shot. And it it was. I didn't say they could have done better. And then um if you get more than four, well then you get the quattro.

And it really does kind of feel like the middle of June to me. And the want like the womping willow wasn't enough. Because I am looking at the stars that are. What do you what do you what do you what do you just say whatever you want to say. But is it funny? Alex didn't do it, so there's no challenge. You start with toad infections or Well that is very that is very very kind of you to say thank you, Alex. But you know, context context is king. And like we're more like smooth and not smooth, but like Yeah yeah yeah. Keep keep going. It's really good. Um He did an episode on a plane one time. Then I'm a hero. It's it's it's it's funny that he he arrives on a little elevator, accessibility elevator, in a wheelchair.

I think I've already said this. Whereas if the tech douchebag And I He was the only What did I do that I I've caused or incurred or spent a life debt? M uh if you had an intervention with me, I I would be the one for dinner. Mm-hmm. Is that Richard Dawkins' book, The Selfish Jin? Yeah. It's feels a little more like a Transformers movie. And can I fuck with you? But uh um you Uh no, it's it's it's just I do have a strange way of arriving at Because because you Mm-hmm. It it's If you give a filmmaker in the 1920s, if you give a filmmaker in the 1920s It feels like a talk show. There we go. Who's the crazy one now, right? Not Steve McQueen. This no, not not at all.
