No timestamps yet for this episodeAnd Lenny and Squiggy would come in and go, Hello Did it sound like that? She'd always listen. So good. I haven't watched this yet, so I don't know if it's good, but you'll get the idea. They're all there because of those people, but this isn't that's what an unholy alliance most weddings are in terms of people you've known at different parts of your lives, people where the roles that you've had for each other have changed over time. but it's also what makes it really fucking complicated. It's like, huh, who invites a divorced couple to a to a wedding? No! And like this is stuff that only in a traditional person when only men are supposed to do, and fucking, of course, the misfit toys are all doing this together.
But I liked it a lot because instantly liked it, because these people are so interesting and charismatic and well spoken. You've got to show that he was in Memento. And what what I what I mean to say is that you for somebody who's over 30, you do align, you align much more heavily with somebody who's 20 than somebody who's 40 in so many ways. And it's like, uh, I i if we're are we all r are we that that different? I just watched Lost Highway, rewatched Lost Highway, where she's a young hottie. Uh, these are all very smart, uh talented, like d down-to-earth m uh men. I well. With Alex Cox and Merlin Mann. Mm-hmm. I don't know if you're that far. So you know the actor Joe Montaigne? I finally arrived at it and of course he disagrees because otherwise I guess we wouldn't have a show.
Let's just I don't know if you looked at the link I sent you, but like it's a very slow website. This is Leela's bridal party, this is Molly's bridal party. but was I don't even know what this guy's background. But like on the table, it's like this this food represents like well here's honey, which represents the sweetness of your relationship. you're gonna undo this institution and it's gonna be all these problems. I like the person. Shit, I forget. That you you you're presenting that as something that's kind of a fairly new idea. But I'm trying to ask you is like you're still you g to you it strikes me that unless I'm and I'm probably just misunderstanding you, it strikes me that you're saying things that don't make sense.
fucking dinglings. But like putting it in the case. But like whatever the guy is, that that guy who's been in everything, or you become, I guess, a little bit like Paul Guilfoyle, your days of like being a leading man, that was just it hasn't happened, it's not gonna happen. And this is why I sometimes, much of the figure, pause a little bit on the freight. Why would you do that? structurally. And s so sometimes it's just a jazz album. Roderick pa pa Patreon, uh patreon. this and he don't got it. June. Parlor Parlor with with uh you know what? That that's that's my Robert Evans. you know, from swingers and whatnot and Marvel movies. That that worked on two multiple levels too. And I I thought there's some certain episodes of that show that are very delightful.
And how Robert Evans would have all these multiple phones on his desk and you could tell that none of the lights were blinking on the calls, but he'd act like he was on like multiple phone calls. from now on. or something. I I have I I you may know that I there are words that are special to me. speed hello hello hello well see that's the other one hello that's funny if you do Robin Williams as Mrs. I don't know. When my when somebody took too long in the bathroom and they came back to too long in the estimation of my late grandfather, he'd say, What happened? accent. Uh can we talk about your v v vacation, pseudo vacation? uh other people's expectations. Reconsible differences will come out in uh sixteen to eighteen weeks.
You know? uh some d uh technology things in the after show. as I said to Sarakusa, I um for I'm realizing I'm well like two years out of the business of trying to quote unquote teach my kid anything. school in life is doing bullshit because you have to. I I think it's best to really throw yourself into it. Which is you know how you now have two people that you need to manage in a kind way in a way that without expressly talking about w why you need to treat this as a special case, you've still got to deal with it. Like that is really true. J trickle through and then one person. that you're dealing with. Uh you know, and think how often like who's at a a Roy family wedding it becomes like a major plot point.
I I've decided I'm gonna be kind of excited about this chaos. Once I'm there, I'm usually having like an okay time because I do try to throw myself in. Uh you know what I mean? But because everybody is wearing everybody's in the costume. And boy, this person hasn't been to church in forever, but it was so important to their parents that it be done by this given clergy person, you know, and because that because grand if you bring grandma to this wedding And there's so much at a wedding there where you go there and you're like, oh man, you got inside information that's like not part of the performance. Yeah. How can you have a wedding without the presence of God? to that sort of belief. Oh my god, the that just drove me a little bit more off the off the edge.
Yeah. J just watching it. m more than I do. was just like the idea of what I'm s watching right now going away, sitting next to my kid in a suit. I see, I wanna I was I'm always tempted to say something vanilla and milk toast like reproductive rights stuff, but it's not. Uncle and like I just want to say uh you did such a good job I'm sorry you had to stand up there so long and I said I don't know quite how to say this, but I just fucking love your whole deal. Like they all were hilarious, every single person. The guy with like the red hair and the mustache, who was a piece of shit. He I I think he might have a Indian or Pakistani background, but he's speaking Farsi and like the whole thing was fucking bananas, reading the reading om like um the Rumi poems and shit.
programs was really nicely done and included luckily for us dummies included entire page was just like hey here's a quick gloss on what happens at a person wedding here's what all the foods represent And each of these symbolizes something. And then there's a picture of these jewels in it and I I imagine Molly wrote this. Just utterly spectacular. Are are you gonna I don't wanna make this negative I mean really seriously. There's one where you burn rue. I I I you know of course I talked to him the whole time. Dylan's probably sixteen nineteen sixty nine record natural skyline. by Van Morrison. Bearsville, you know, Big Indian, whatever it's called, like that area who has taken all these fucking photos.
Levon Helm. to see many more of those. Like I don't care what whatever his fucking deal is is fine with me. And even if he never goes to another w wedding again or never goes to a a queer wedding that was this cool, it's so important that kids grow up knowing that's out there. Chat. you know, especially villains in movies. Like that guy that guy's the new like uh uh Frank Welker. I love stuff like that. Season seven of of Law and Order Poughkeepsie or whatever. Like, is he the funny Canadian guy? He's the one that Alan everybody rips off with the Tully mustache, you know, with the wife that's uh addicted to Laudanum. Yeah, exactly. psych. I uh I I I we've been friends for a while and you know that I don't think there's a lot to be gained by giving somebody a word that neatly slots into something they misunderstand.
I mean there's a thing that's always existed, which uh the a joke that was not even funny when I was a kid, but was an omnipresent joke when I was a kid. Oh, you mean Paul McCartney was in a band before Wings? It's just like a yeah, huh? Terrible. So they put up with it. And we got left at not because uh it's like ha ha ha y y you walk, but there just wasn't any sidewall, like there just literally couldn't. Uh isn't that a true thing? Not because they think they'll always be poor, but because, perhaps erroneously, almost always erroneously, they think that they'll be different. But like if you always knew you're gonna be poor, why wouldn't you just go work somewhere where there was steady work of what's available rather than giving it all up and moving to LA?
It's insane. If you take out Boomers in Generation X, in in the rest of even the modern history of America, like wha what is so different from what people are going through today? Uh no, I'm not saying it is. Ultimately meaningless and just cause acrimony and misunderstanding by saying, Oh, you're this generation, now I know you fucking ridiculous and it's making us all stupid with this idea that people born two years apart like are are fundamentally different. p people in the movie it was in twenty twelve and they're so most of these guys are like Gen X, right? Like it sounds like you are it sounds like you have about like five colors with which you will be able to tag every person, any person.
Isn't that part of the chicken problem for everybody? It's there's, you know, a thousand different paths that that get us to like how wherever we are. You never re never met people like that. You know, b if you could summarize it into w probably a Morrissey song, if I'm remembering. But having heard things like the the uh the office podcast, uh the woman who did casting for all those all the great shows, like I have so much respect for people and you look at somebody whether that's you know Wes Anderson or like there's so many, you know, directors that I think are part of w their success He's he's so odd looking and like, but you're you're so glad, you know, Signor Salieri, get up, I'm gonna eat your cream puff, you know, that that guy.
And or he's great in one floor over the cuckoo's nest. Oh, that's that's the funny guy I was talking about. Yeah, and and the best casting directors l like you said, like it is incredibly difficult, but um I I think it was uh JC McKenzie who who said this, like Excuse me, at in Wolf of Wall Street. Uh this happens so so often for for me where I'll just turn to Matt and we'll be watching something and I I'll I'll be happy to provide you names for this. Um, she's got a very important, small but very important part in True Detective. I wonder like what I know like uh like all the actors on uh Yellow Jackets, the older versions of the uh like teens in the forest. curb your enthusiasm because and especially with somebody like honestly somebody like Ann Dowd or somebody like character actress Margaret Martindale where you're like you know they're at that age And and this is right when she's like she's kind of like she's super hot in sneakers, but she is like pushing middle-aged.
Uh, give us your fucking money. I have to say, and I mentioned this last week, but I'll mention it again here. You know, it's one thing to be like a young guy who's like man number three in movie, who's just like generic guy at thing. to being like the middle-aged guy. Like, uh oh, he's in Ozarks? Do you have anything else? My a podcast I'm on at like triple speed? Did you fall in? Listening to John Roderick. Are you what is it? Do you use that phone? Cysts. And I ha I have uh made ads for Roderick on the line b uh before. I well fan art or cosplay, something where you just did it when you were like what are we nine years old with your with your one of your Macs you got. I mean, I uh about eight years ago, I did uh commission fan art for another program you did, You Look Nice Today.
Yeah, well I mean it's heavily inflected by people who've also talked about obviously I'm I'm repeating a Patton Oswald joke. No. I missed Mr. But anyhow, it was John Favreau having dinner with four other people and you know they would t you know what it's not unlike those sort of like GQ, I guess, like uh the ability to see what your friends have rated movies. Um for people of of a certain age, certain age of an antiquity, you know I'm from Lenny and Squiggy on the TV show Laverne and Shirley. um where he and I think the guy, so Michael McKeon and David David L. And and like talking about having an a you're having an affair with him and goes ha hello. And and w the the a bit on the show and it was a bit, but it was a funny bit, a bit on the show is they would talk about they would be talking in their apartment and they would talk about something like usually like kind of revolting or they'd mention something really gross and then the door would fly open.
Um no, Mr. Um let me see if I can find squeaky for you because this would this would help a lot. Title Would you like to see a compilation of Lenny and Squiggy saying hello? Hello. 'Cause of your transhumanism, I mean. No, sorry, that was that noise I'm gonna make. Okay. Having to go to the East Coast for 39 hours to go to a wedding is not my idea of a vacation. You know, no no planet uh uh uh survives exposure to Alex Cox and and their transatlantic accent. wha whether you're thinking of like church or voting or weddings or whatever, it's a thing you do and it's a thing you're gonna do and nobody really is that super interested in whether you like it. Uh my feeling is it's best to throw yourself all the way into it, even or especially because it's stupid.
You know, like I certainly had times where I had to just go back to the room and watch coverage of Russia for an hour. I don't I wouldn't say that I like weddings. As you'll discover when you think about stuff, all this sh I mean, d d oh let me ask you this before I carry on. and to bring the a a version of you that can go along, get along. hostile their relationship, there's still a pretty good chance, unless you're like really mean, you're not gonna sit them at the same table next to each other. That could also be estranged members of the family. that's that people get up there and act stupid so that that tells other people it's okay to get up there and act stupid. The the the thing is though, you do throw yourself in, you do have these weird it can be very awkward, it can be very strange.
And I I had a a really, really terrific time. Whether that's at a bar or a wedding is a big part of who they are. Ever, ever, ever. Like I get tons of interaction with people. complicated and the dynamics can get even more uh awkward. I mean I think we're s I mean like I'm I'm inserting a w a question that's actually an opinion, which is I still think I've still continue to believe that COVID was hardest on people where interaction in public is a big part of and and the public performance. It's just different from people who like to go drink, you know, brass monkeys in a in a s in l loud bar or whatever. right now was what we celebrated for three days. But you know, there's also the kind of performance though of like, you know, my favorite emoji is the grimacing face.
as as the all the actors, all the dramatist personae, like you know them as people, and now you're watching them in this play that's called Wedding and you're like, oh shit, this is so fucking weird and awkward and And there's not like they can put up with everybody can tolerate or not tolerate certain things and believe me the Van Dynagram for that is all over the place at a wedding, right? I mean we had to wait four years for that to be at at risk. s so nice in every way. Went to UCB, the cult, you know, started moving up at UCB, became like a of course because it's a cult became like a teacher at UCB, but then at a certain point, like started working for Liz Winstead's group that does It's keeping abortion legal and available in the most aggressive, sometimes guerrilla ways.
I mean labels, whatever. m Molly's gorgeous or so Leela's gorgeous sisters are over here. Get as gay and as weird as you want. This is the real deal. technically Molly's friend had a great thing all about Leela. So there was a couch set up, all these beautiful flowers, and this table covered with f like all different foods, and with the help of Lilo's mom they'd put together I I don't know the name of it and I wouldn't even try to pronounce it, but it's like a traditional Persian wedding. You're supposed to have an egg, which of course represents fertility. A a person wanting um the designer sent it to us and we're not sure what they're for, but we put them in here anyway. And like, uh you know, Layla, Layla, Layla and you know the talks like Layla, Leila's the best.
But but yeah, I covered the very little of this talking to Syracuse. And it really it really was their thing and everybody was into it. I got to carry a baby. Yeah, I don't know why they're hanging out by the bathroom, but I'm glad they were there. But Alex might be getting a pad. Yeah, I don't oh oh Alex is back I think. I I was swallowing a bit too much snot to be able to continue talking, so I had to get clean next. uh 2012, which is a very sh well short but good length, like 72-minute probably documentary about how would I put this? Mm it's you know, there are fairly p predictable questions about how uh obviously you don't see the documentary directors asking these questions. uh om omundsen.
He's fucking Brahm from the first few episodes of Deadwood. I don't it was probably like 2003. who are sort of in that range of the thing. to to be Paul Guilfoyle and or who or who would like to do. and be like, wow, Weizawi was just how difficult it is to be an actor and how little they are I cannot understand this response at all. m millions and millions of dollars and you're like embarrassed. That guy? You can't do anything else. So uh the public transit in the US is obviously subpar, but like in Los Angeles, I wouldn't know how to get around on a bus. Ooh, hot. Like, oh hey, let's um like getting to a restaurant from our Airb Airbnb and it's like, oh, it's uh less than a mile, we can walk there.
And and what what I'm trying to say, the reason I keep coming back to this is it it sounds like you when you say things like we all know we're always gonna be poor, which I realize is like a you're making being funny on a podcast. And I think that this is fairly obvious with all of these guys who I admire very m like much. how entitled are are some of these guys going to sound when they talk about how difficult it is to get work, but they really didn't. And and a lot of people who were born around that time they lived through something called the Depression. out of your weird model of America, if you take boomers out of it, how much of your theory still holds up? For my dad? uh uh c creative work who d go b like the peop the kind of people who this movie re revolves around.
peers like get something that you didn't which I I completely get that and I appreciate I really appreciate that they said that because I would be exactly the same way. Went well. But um they talked about how just the audition uh process itself is so The I don't remember. Yeah, because I th what you what uh happens uh often, um I I do like how they have their um a there's an agent and a manager uh who talks the two. They know the range of what someone can do. Uh, because like if if a casting director ends up liking you, like there are big time directors who like certain uh casting directors, and those casting directors, you know, they Where like there's not that many actresses. Like it was so great that like cause let's l the elephant in the room there.
And um oh god, what's the name of the wonderful actress? The reason I'm mentioning this is like these are women who are very talented and it's very I'm s just so fucking glad that they found a way. I I don't know. an agents and uh a manager takes on top of w uh whatever, depending on how w what guilds or union you're in at the time. I think it's because I'm a fucking nerd is why I'm thinking. I was watching this. No, there's no there's no bit. that I think this I mean this really encapsulates just how unprofessional I am today. Everyone in my life has been asking this question, you know, I think do better. Oh no. I was I was on fire in that episode. I've yeah, I am sure. It was one of the few things that I've done anticipating uh just talking about other things I've done.
And I could say it's funny, but uh no. Oh my god. He's great. can be very I think we've talked about this numerous times. Hello! Was that cultural appropriation? I mean didn't she do a Mich wasn't a little bit of a Michael Scott? But um for something to be a vacation I've really I've I've in my head anyway, I'm open to changing my mind, but in my head I've boiled it down to from the need to please other people. Mmm, this episode this how would you like to s would you like to have uh I won't even use this stupid cute name I uh use, but I would like to talk about So the the the baseline thing is like even if you're not into going to this wedding and it means the world that someone you care about wants you there, you you can you really should probably go if you can.
Well, you could avoid that, I guess, by saying no kids allowed, but that wouldn't to me be what a wedding is, which is this grand American chaos title. While we were getting ready to leave for the airport on Sunday, a a thought finally landed on me. Nobody knew that Joe or like or Timothy or Margaret was actually going to show up and be there and like, oh boy, this is weird to watch. some point. why we can, right? will do anything they can to stop and it sorry, but look it's it's really it's it's a lot to process. And that's who Molly works for. in like not head start, but things that help children of uh less means, fewer means, to to become achievers. Some people have a strong feeling about one or the other.
Robert Moses and how words mean things. in i being exactly who they are. Like there was a lot there were a lot of people doing a lot of different things and it was all very big. It's conducted did you ever see Get Out? He's a very, very funny, very talented guy. Um all that needs to be said was the the means were there to put on this spectacular wedding and it was, you know, very, very well done. Yeah, it it it really it didn't really hit me until they were walking down the aisle. You go back and go take a leak, right? and his alignment and his character class and his gender. Based on something that is admittedly very personal and real to me, but is also just um shockingly different than where this was.
fairly recently. It was it's like Adam Schlesinger. Told her one day, on some special night, if my song is right, I can find a way. Uh wait, hold hold on. Three to nine of these people, you go, oh, that guy, right? who uh you know from things. I mean like you ever seen um I Know That Voice, the one about voice actors? dollars and cents things about what it means to have the career that they have. It's a documentary. But it was wasn't that ish. I would have done something very different from the clever but not very useful way they throw up a scorecard for a couple seconds. It's like you know, if it was uh I was thinking of somebody like Joe Pants Leone, Joey Pants, I call him. I uh context aside, for the ones that you do know, like I I knew Timothy Omenson because as he mentions Mm, no, but I couldn't tell if it was because I know so many actors kind of the opposite of a lot of these guys where they do acting jobs like once whatever they can to make the measly, measly amount of money they do.
Paid along with uh you know how and how inconsistently they can anticipate getting war. younger in some ways than your age. Right? I everybody in the back of like everybody wants or as I I don't even want to say but wants, like aspires to be that because That is how it's going to be. And I think people still believe that. between being different and uh be having a stable job or even or or being famous or uh like have you know not not just um a stable job but but insurance and uh a s a stable m mental state the uh Italy, Japan. Why you're like Because you're saying you are I've I you you are saying or I am hearing or something else I'm seeing hearing you saying like very very broad things that Why is that an expectation?
You've got to credit the people who are so great at casting their movies and not just for the above-the-line credits, but for like so many people like the people like Milo Schwarman putting Vincent Civelli in movies. I you know, it's much if you've seen my reel, you're going to get way more out of that than just a an audition. Well uh I d I don't think casting uh directors necess I' f that one guy was a little bit like salty about specific casting directors. Actor, like f however it worked out, like that they have found work that and they are so good at what they do. Like, whatever happened that allowed Anne Dowd to get cast in things after like law and order guest spots? Is like sh okay, so she's Aunt Lydia in Pamate's Tale.
Um in Carbier Enthusiasm, you know, as Leon is like, I'm just I'm so glad whatever in the world happened that got JB Smooth on. like in you know in how it uh she too uh n I I would actually sh she is a person that like I would wonder about like Um she's she's in what was the other thing I just saw her in recently? Rebrand is definitely the wrong word, I guess. that question like like that a that's why that's why I don't sorry that's why this movie like infuriated me is I wanted yeah it it very much is with your agent when you get a little bit more famous and it's like, oh, but they have to take a bigger cut of the check. Don't join Second City. Hello. Hello, hello, hello wore two hats very, very I would call it I almost had a hat.
Uh on r r your other podcast program, Roderick on the line, you have uh ad breaks. That when I say that it always ends well. The Hollywood producer worked for Charlie worked for Charlie Bloodhorn. And I and now forty years later or whatever, I'm like, mmm, I've got her bowels and I've got her lists It's c sure, g there's cultural appropriation, but also it's just bad. Um to me a vacation is not about travel. I've never asked. Um even like rehearsal dinners and stuff like that just out out of the picture. But um the thing I was trying to say is like and I don't know how to say this 'cause it's like you something you just gotta learn. 'Cause he hasn't been to that that many weddings, like especially as a person, like as a like a a sentient being.
Nobody really, really remembers much of anything before they were five. Like there's things in life that are institutions and they're institutions where somebody cares a lot. about what's happening. of odd relationships. been conducted in a wedding. I love think about that scene in Godfather when the little girl is dancing with Abe Vagoda and she's standing on his shoes and dancing. I have the asterisk of uh really not enjoying wearing dresses, but that i is also part of the like especially if you're like a quote unquote bride. This is who we are stuff that was incredibly moving to me. What the hell is that? this world. her her I I don't know what the her what what what their term is, but her their s her spouse, my niece's spouse, uh family's from Iran.
No now spouse, uh, was in New New York, Manhattan, New York City government, doing things with affordable housing, and now does is in this program, used to work in the de Blasio administration and now works Like you remember your thing about the same twenty dollar bill? And like with a whole like an outfit, a whole nine, like like s like like a Black Panther kinda outfit. And then boy was there ever a party after. Mm-hmm. But um Layla's sister loves to uvulate, especially right when it starts to get a little quiet and it uh it's a little bit unnerving. No. I have a go-to karaoke song. Like contemporary, like current. the literary movement. And I'm not trying to Well, I'm not trying to make this too functional, but I think a lot of especially in the like the second act and beyond, they get into some brass tacks.
um is that it bears fairly directly on anybody who's trying to do something, if you like, independently. I I try to I tried to really separate myself for from that. Yes. There's so much stuff outside the portalet. Yeah, yeah, it's like why are you? why people move i especially improv people, they move to Chicago and then they move to New York and then they move to LA t typically. The Yeah. I don't know, like the I guess I haven't ever met anyone who like assumes that everyone on TV is a millionaire. Like sometimes your friend succeeding is just they had a better a slightly better day because the audition something? away with very few answers. I I I'm like the the C CBS guy. I you were talking.
I didn't I s I swear to god I n I did not open with a bit. saving all of this good good shit for behind a paywall as as is tradition with all good podcasts. Nothing interesting to say about uh uh periods. Uh dinner for Fox. No, no, I'm I I uh it looked bad. in any wedding. performance of a wedding. throw myself in, especially post COVID, the expectations for weddings are now even more Well putting a pin in uh never being lonely p p uh ge oh b uh oh boy. like to have a g m basically a d do-over w wedding uh Is that is that you you care this much. obviously in the family, but also just one of my favorite people used to has done comedy like ever since she was like at Wesleyan. She did shit like us the day that the pandemic started, she sent fifty dollars to every friend of Molly's who does comedy for a living.
Um, and he, as it turns out, is more m they're all friends, but more of kinda Molly's friends, like one of her improv part And she can't she just sends fifty dollars to people because she likes them. fewer weddings like this in the future. The photo of him holding a guitar. But she believes in me I'll never know just what she sees in me But she has faith in me, and so I go on trying faithfully I'll find it for show notes. I I I I mean, th Deadwood uh to a Disney Channel movie and he didn't have work for like Yep. how many actors are involved that aren't you know, quote like stars. young, uh di di digitally literate or v digital first. I they go to LA because you can't uh do anything else for some people.
the very distinct levels of uh s like basic basically the distinct levels of security the Gore Vidal quote and like In anything, but uh absolutely like the the guy from the you know the I but I think I'm slightly familiar with that act I call him the CBS guy Famous for asking uh hilarious rhetorical questions, you know? I'm aware. It's funny to me. My grandmother did, oddly enough. weddings in in general? Um something you learn, I think, is that it's in some ways the wedding is absolutely not about you as the person who's getting married. You know what I mean? And and so there were all these people there for the Persian background, like hardcore like like you know, her parents are from Iran. And she goes, Oh how did she react?
smart and diverse and like every con it was like the first time I came to San Francisco, every time, every conversation I would have, because you know I just start conversations with people 'cause I'm weird. And so they conducted this together. Which sometimes I'm sorry, I don't mean to be so emotional about this, but it really does bring up a lot that I haven't had to think about in this speci I'm not even doing I'm the as the as the father of a recent son. But the monitors at this place were not that good. I told her one day, if she was my girl, I could change the world with my little song I was wrong. And I in in a young at a young and a younger time with f admittedly good monitors, I can fucking kill it.
pretty b bored. I don't know, like six years. Right? No, only no walking in the lake. rely very heavily on thought terminating cliches that bring absolutely, in my opinion, if I could say, bring absolutely no illumination to our actual human condition. Uh the the movie, if if you will, the uh a aviator. I ooh that's hope that's helpful. But no, I'm not sure. Hello Hello, girl, hello, hello, hello, hello, hello, hello. Yes. Oh. Okay, but a transatlantic accent. It uh uh it i it it's like when m Adele had her uh uh m once like when a white person has dreadlocks Yes. I I'm not against people getting married. Like this isn't even in a church. Hello, new people. And um there are all these people. Uh is there's just so many there's so much uh you know what whatever.
did not like what this movie was doing. Anyone who wants to be an actor or or a podcaster and or anything independent or creative, like we all know that we're going to be poor and it's going to be No like literally I the first time I was missing persons was was mostly Frank Zappa's band. And um it's not and luckily for y'all out there it's not that easy to find. Last year was it one of th the worst years of my life? They were both in like an LA comedy thing together and they created these characters. Um I'm sending you this and um we don't have to put this in the show, but do 321 when you're ready. Oh, absolutely well, I mean, I get cucked by Syracusa. I've decided I'm gonna be kind of excited about how chaotic this is.
It was really really and you see the photos of what the what people look like as a few, but anyway, it was really amazing. Less than a second. I mean it's it's like it's like something you'd watch on a plane in my opinion. This this is a generational thing because not only do like n uh I I am not talking about all of humanity. Yeah, but the thing is it is it is that guy you know from that thing. That's that's what Matt and I call it. Is it that hard? No, it's it's oh uh no. Kids know what AdSense is. Like you you still are very much a part of a very emerging or not emergent, but emerging sort of like idea of people Oh, it was I think it was back when A and E used to be a real channel that showed things.
She's always writing on her lists. That's not something you it's I'm gonna tell you what I tell my friend John Syracuse, my worst friend. Perhaps unsurprisingly, and I'd love to talk about like w who these people are and like what led such amazing people to be at their wedding. But it's it's nice to hear it at a queer wedding. There's another version that's with women. There you go. But people who like get a rolling thing think, oh this is gonna be easy, and then they don't work for five years. Yep, baby up to keep their insurance and then they go back to doing live theater and improv. We all know that we're going to be poor. So when I get my period, it's it's sometimes it requires to my face and see what happens.
But whenever I started Because when you say it, you walk up to somebody at, I don't know, probably like a memorial service listening to a podcast at triple That's honestly that's what I would But it's That's what I would do. Well, I mean yes, but not a for a long period of time. You you're watching this uh closer and probably even differently than I do. Okay. So it's not unusual at all. For no I mean Was he doing that? I know it's a hard job. You want to say anything funny? Russell. It's in the Catskills, like in the mountains. Oh my god, there's like a Lee Von Helm Boulevard there. By Billy, I mean like any. Chat. I this is one of those few things where I think it's no no- You don't know any normal people.
One thing that one guy said. Are you back on your are you back on your uh uh uh on your heels or something? Because I I I'm not because I'm unprofessional. That there's a part of me that go such a funny episode. I had a l I had a running list at one time. But then letting it fade into that pink and then eventually like the bleach blonde through the pink, it was just bad. There's all that stuff where like they have to get up there and do the show. I'm trans Anthemic, isn't it? I I'm not trying to be sad about this. I I immediately thought of Mel Melanie Linsky. He don't got nothing though. Do you know Michael the actor Michael Michael McCann? Oh boy. Okay. Madeline's the same way. You know, I'm sorry, but like and my kid looks so good in this suit.
Like it's but it's real for for both of us and I hope someday it becomes real for all of us. Yeah. In my hometown in Florida, for a lot of reasons, including they don't have Todd Rongren. Right. You would just assume that that guy must be a multi-multi multi-millionaire 'cause he's in fucking everything. Most of the time no. Now you're moving in a little bit into Robert Evans, which is fine. It's true, you know, I've never thought about it. Watson, I I didn't fall in. Like what if you don't play Here Comes the Bride? And he's wearing a shawl. So different now. Did you fall in? That was a Jordan B. Is there gas in the car? Not Trump. You know, it was it was really it was like Brigadoon. She was really nice.
Wow, he's in a lot of psych. big reveal or like uh not big reveal, but the the thing that the directors really wanted to emphasize Yeah, it's just there was that that thing and they had the McCarthy hearings and it's like, well, what do you fucking imagine like if you take Because I want to note, like, I mean, uh fucking the um Bruce Davidson, I've never seen him I'm gonna do that thing like when I deal with anybody fucking insane I I just go oh huh really wow that must have been wild oh You put a pad in the toilet. Why would you invite? So it's I I'm not in the abstract a fan of weddings, but I I couldn't love the two people who got married. I got to my my what would that be? This this week's challenge was yours.
Oh no no no that's what I'm saying. Well, it wasn't on purpose. Forget it. In because their favorite YouTubers talk about at like how much money they make. But why do they still move there if they know it? It's like when I had uh purple hair, the purple hair was good and I was great at playing oppression a little bit. Are you a weddings person? Do you follow the the idea though of like when I say it's not about you, well, there's one thing already you have to change about your entire conception of this. Can we have not not have reflections and images? What's that scatter? Because why not? Uh like the guy who said, Oh, yep, I rode the bus in LA for a couple of years. I'm saying the knowledge Well the boomers the boomers were were an anomaly.
Yeah. com. So you and your you and your spouse just walk around the house with a phone playing something at triple speed? Um the um the uh uh it was a show hosted by John uh John Favreau. It's kinda like going to Google and saying I hate searching for a thing. Yeah, so it's these these um two young women who worked at a brewery and lived in a uh a like a basement apartment together. One of my favorites, the words hello and hi are both used to great hilarious effect in one of my all-time favorite movies, Hot Fuzz. Well like I mean we should put a put a pin in this because like I I do think that continues to be an interesting conversation and anyway whatever we talked about on the Like I've I've had a fair number of weddings in my life, not as much as a lot of people, because I'm far away from a lot of the people who are getting married.
I don't know what rue is, but burning rue in a brassiere, like that kind of stuff, where you're like, well, this is like this is magic. It was just it was s it was almost as weird as going through New Jersey and seeing the sign that said Sakakas. Uh She Believes in Me by um The Gambler. It kind of sounds like you're doing that a little bit. Um a big thing. I just made a joke about dropping a v uh extra absorbent pad into the the the toilet. Uh he sounds kinda like my Jason Finn. Like obviously maybe like, you know, the the bride and groom or whomever, the bride and bride or whatever, the wedding party, like cares, but people care for different reasons. It was people, I mean every level. Yeah, well I mean and I you I hope it'll be clear that what I was not saying is I hope he gets to get married so who fucking cares But it was it was real nice.
And when I say contemporary, what I'm trying to say is of the time. But then what happens? Do you want me to just start doing shit like that? Hello. Was it Trump or was it just gay marriage concerns in general? Literally a box of plan B on the table. Sorry, I'm still overwhelmed thinking thinking about how Billy got to see that and I really hope that he gets And the same thing happens But like that that guy from Devs. Um the I'm not into it. I know it's a job I would never want, but across the board it really comes across as like at least to these folks, their version of the story is a lot of these folks sound like total dinglings. I wanna hear about I uh please please go on. And like uh this doesn't sound like anybody that I know, but she had all these things.
Ow. Okay, play the music. Did I steal that from people who like schatology? And you you like people from the bridal party come out and like hold make a make a tent by holding a cloth over their head and people, you know, grate these things over them. Like you know Joey Pants. I think he's one of the the younger actors in this and he was holding a coffee and he's got w weird hair. Well, because like and it's all shit from like CBS crime shows where I'm like, no, that's not what that guy's from. I don't wanna say you can't do this hyper or hyperbole that you can't do anything else. There's a bit. We're like, sure, whatever. Mm-hmm. But here's the thing. We are super into this. And like this one guy, uh uh what do you mean?
The uh intentional notes. Is that him? It was not for me. I mean, if you need a picture, imagine a very statuesque, imagine a gorgeous statuesque trans um trans trans woman. I heard him speak four different languages during the ceremony. I I I have been trying to stay very optimistic and I I just can't help but wonder if there's going to be m um Oh. He oh, I don't even know. It's like crossing the street in Florida. Um, we're gonna watch something together. You seem a little bit shredded emotionally right now. I know the name. I have I have a whole platform for the kind of performance that makes me who I am and makes me happy. That's uh not as good because the women are not as super well known apart from um um um one of the actresses.
And I'm not trying to I'm not saying anything apart from we all have our own things we bring with us from from different points in our life. Like Patricia emphasize. I'm sorry. I mean m it depends on your generation. Yeah. And I'm I'm not trying to like throw shade at people who of faith or but well because like no, that's that's real. And like I'm not talking about the stars, but like the people of like one or two lines. Movies are great. That's not a positive thing. Peterson show. Fat Tony, the mobster, Bob Odenkirk, Michael McKeon, and Jeff Garland. So to answer your question, that weddings are fucking stupid. We're but we're never lonely. Oh my god. Hold, hold, hold. I remember he's one of the um one of the partygoers of Wolf at W.
And then so he said they say to Timothy Elephant, he's kind of thought one of us wouldn't come, right? She works has works specifically in this like gorilla comedy outfit that does like emergency reactions to abortion shit with improv comedy and like do fundraisers and do all these different things. He's got an old office. Oh my god, the the store that's that was the thing. You look at somebody like uh speaking of Titanic, uh of uh sp um uh uh Kathy Bates. So Mm-hmm. It'll be in the show notes. That that seems very effective. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And um and her whole big family was there, ridiculously supportive. Like I had a conversation for like 35 minutes with a woman who used to write speeches for de Blasio about It's like you've never seen a more joyful crowd of people happy to see the the inevitable relationship and love that these two have.
And you're like, what the fuck? It's like Trump. Like and some of them have like had a multi-year run on uh T V series. Why would you why would you why would it's been an hour and a half. This week's challenge, watch that guy who was in that thing. It's an accent that combines what? If you take away like well just just to for the that's a good question. And because I'm currently super obsessed with season ten of Kirby Enthusiasm, you know, like Larry says when he's got to go to Cabo and figure out what everybody weighs for the plane, oh my God, season ten of Kirbier Enthusiasm is so fucking good. I'd never been there. So like this is the thing. I'm if anything like how What? You know you ever notice I make that distinction between modern and contemporary?
They're so good. You know I love you and I respect you, but I this this response is so alien to me f coming from you. But I take your point. Okay, that I uh know and believe, but there's a big difference. What do you what do you mean by that? Like but I don't understand a lot about casting, but w watching this, oh my gosh. And so you don't always have to go through that whole big audition process that is Yeah, you've got somebody sort of in your toolbox and you like It used to be some person, even several different people, and a couple of them you remember. That's I'm not I'm not being sarcastic. The perfor yeah, keep going. Oh yeah. Was he like a boss? Yes. That's a good way of uh put it putting it because there was Timmy uh omensin.
You align a lot more. The be c I mean the the the internet a exists and It does. Is people draw conclusions based on whatever their situation is, based on what they know, based on however they got to where they are. Brilliant. Yeah, yeah. That's again, unprofessional in all facets. Is that what you did? com slash Roderick on the line. The the word hello can be very funny. You know, I have a running list of things that my grandparents used to say, and that includes things like, did you fall in? It's a break from the need it's a it's a it's it's me s accepting in my heart that I am taking a break from Which, you know, but and I mean like there's a Venn diagram. If they do if you know they're b b both gonna come and even if it's not like really acrimonious or That great actor.
They wrote this entire thing with the you know, the women. Uh you know the the president in Battlestar Galactica? Wasn't she like in Jamaica or something? It doesn't mean you have to like it, but you do still get points for doing it. But that was the thing. I made so many new friends from Molly's improv days. I introduced him to what a macaroon is. I've had a go-to karaoke song for 25 years. No, uh but you're you're asking why, and I'm saying that uh I don't actually care. One of the things I loved, it was not like leaned on very heavily in this this movie, but I got from it was like But how do you know when to seek different rule roles? Now you're also you're getting you're older than you've ever been and now you're even older.
I'm I I apologize. Because everybody there is there in some ways because of the people who are getting married on some level, including the photographers, right? I found it incredibly interesting. I mean, and some of the why nots are like people have why nots, but uh most of the people I know who live in LA hate it, but they love their work. It's amazing how different their lives are than the lives of young people today. When he went to Korea? Mmm. Yes, there's gas in the car. Yeah. Some I don't know. I mean it looked like the cast of Dune or something. Oh, yes. But you can get how that was like, right? You told me I'm not allowed to scat anymore. What was that? Uh that was his name. Maybe there's a supercut or I can make a supercut.
Um. And you talk about a fucking mix of things that would fuck people up. She's like, thank you. Can I say one more thing? I I I I don't use headphones when I'm in the bathroom. That was a good that was a good joke. It's it's so it's really, really good. And it was such a it was such a fun idea. Alright. Having been through one real wedding and one, for practical purposes, eloping. I think it's very similar to to you ex i i i except when I Like no no I mean I don't w however things turn out wherever he lands for for a month or whatever, like whatever his deal is, I don't fucking care. Oh, you know what? But uh uh the reason I mention that is because that context is like These guys didn't know it.
I mean, that's something my grandfather stop talking. Okay. Like when he goes to the crime scene where Kate Blanchett, the uncredited Kate Blanchett, his ex-girlfriend, is is working on the scene. What's so so how does that fit with yours? Like all these people. You don't know you know Joey Pants, but you've gotta show like Paul Gilfoyle. Um he has a very, very small part. Uh uh I I don't know why I said that. I did a karaoke song very early in the evening, not because I'm sweaty, but because I know, honestly, Alex, I know how important it is. It's a big like valve. And not in a like a look at us way. But uh 'cause we got m I for folks who are new to the times got married in tw What's all this thing?
It was people I care about. He's one of the two people officiating. If you click on if you got that link, did you ever get the photos I sent? And they made a big point of saying, like uh they the couple decided that instead of an egg here, they have a box of plan B. We're near Woodstock. Well they have you know part of it is let's let's get the elephant to have more. It's like all this stuff all over again where it's like I'm being forced to reprocess a lot of my priors. Fucking brilliant. Like if you want we'll talk about whatever you want, but like I don't want it to get too sad. Like he's the drummer for the band and one of the great people. He's the guy who has been in psych and a bunch of stuff that I'll just look it up.
The young guy? Like I I was expecting like, oh, how what kind of conversations do you have? Hello. Michael Michael? And so uh we had a a a glampy kind of cabin. Uh Alex might be falling in. I've seen psych, but was he like a boss? And m we talked about this in the after show lesson. Because you are you are young, you are you are in spirit, if I may say, with respect. Uh the majority of people who do independent art things just know that it's Why have people continue to try to be reading Hayworth for sixty or eighty years? The first time I was in uh L LA for work, it was What are you doing? It does. And like I the part I there I so like I'm not against weddings at all. Don't worry. There's some dude, and you if you zoom in, you can read the placard, but like there's this dude who has taken who's from like the Woodstock.
Oh sorry needed a Kleenex because I was I I am back. And I wanted Alex to watch it because for lots of reasons. And and like they throw it up really fast and it's in that dumb like infographic is supposed to be clever. I'm talking about the uh about actors. If you know nothing about Hollywood, then maybe. He's the guy wearing eighties glasses and every eighties thing and he's always the bad guy. Is that what you is that what you want this to be? Hi. Boy or boy. Like Logan Roy comes in by helicopter at the last minute. They've got to put on King Lear no matter what. Or like what if you try to get cute about it and like it's all s like string octets playing Steely Dan songs? I don't I mean I don't want to get too weird about it, but my niece um married the woman that she's been with since 2018.
Yeah, yeah. Or you could just be a person who stops taking photographs of people on vacation. Okay. Yeah. If some Yeah. Frank Sinatra was on the line and he was not crooning. Uh I I you know what? Um you might uh did you enjoy the TV show The Simpsons? He wouldn't he couldn't be bothered to like do the show if we didn't have a way to just yell at me for no reason. And I, of course, like everything right now, I totally get that. So people my age you asso you associate that with hypotellicomania, you know? Grandnephew? Patricia Marcus Moon Lost Highway. That was funny. You you have a bit too much of a a transatlantic ac accent. But like this was a very this is a wild fucking wedding. Yeah, exactly.
Go do more on performance. Right? It was like this fucking island of misfit toys. Right. Walking in the lake. Was he doing a brand new thing? Ah, I thought he w I liked him. Oh, Last Fuckable Day, of course. How how's it going? Do you remember Parlor Parlor? Go on. Oh any oh we can talk about here too. Do you remember uh Allison Williams? Leela's friend, who was the guy in the in the shawl, like did a whole thing about it. Oh yeah. I the for what it's worth, the I and I think I mentioned this very briefly last week in the after show. A lot of room for growth there if you think about it. And look, I'm not trying to be I am I'm I don't think I'm being sexist, I'm not being unkind, but like a lot of young women, they were cast because they were talented and very pretty and like hot.
Thank you, good casting directors, for not being dicks. You had a you had uh I I believe an ad for your I don't know is did he pay play Captain America? Hello. It might, but it was also just bad. But you kinda one of the guys kinda looked like him uh looked a lot like him. He says he's like if uh someone's more hip then they know me from Deadwood. Um, but like there's and I like I don't mean to just be talking about It was when I knew that the uh well, I at the time I knew it was when like, oh geez, grandma. Three, two, one, go. A vacation is not about like a destination. My favorite part of a wedding, well, you know, in the A tier or B tier anyway. Hello. That's none of my fucking business. That's a good that should be uh a new apple.
Are you are you feeling insecure right now? I know all of the Michaels McKeon. Because you made it very funny. I'd be singing that while I w you know I don't know who would give me away. Apparently. Whoa, wait, why? He's in every I think he's in every Munich Form movie. You are. Let me see which one was Bob. I will do fine with free time. There's a lot of uvulating, which at at a certain point becomes a little bit unnerving. And like, so you do see the Bob Dylan Natural Skyline photo? That one I took is real janky looking because like, you know, once again, somebody needs to make an app that'll take my reflection out of images. That was a dumb joke when I was eleven. It's not it's not somebody you've never heard of from something you've never seen.
Oh no what is happening? I'm I'm just saying it's not Oh so it's because it looked bad. Wasn't vacation, but yes, of course. He recorded that latest episode right after we talked about Vision Pro on our show. I cannot believe I hadn't actually thought all weekend. And she put her arms on my shoulders. Actually, technically two more things. We talked mostly about the travel part, which is, you know, my bet noir. The the roasters. Oh I didn't I didn't mean you I didn't I sorry, I d I didn't I didn't want to disclose that. Landers, I think, played Squiggy. Like uh travel and uh other factors aside, like m mm, you know, family all that family shit. It's the whole like chicken dance and like and and dealing with people asking you what your deal is and like all these things where you're forced into this crucible.
It was so we should talk about what actually happened at this thing, but it was so well done. We're near Big Pink, like where the band recorded with Dylan. This week's challenge is mine, yeah. You know actors that are at the level of Paul Gilfoil? And I'm not gonna get into generations because it doesn't fucking mean anything. I was still playing podcast with the cards. I decided I need a couple wind chimes. I don't know what it was on. Yes, but not like what he was in. Ireland and Nova Scotia? There are many apps that can can do that. And uh annoyed, I think. These are middle-aged women. Hello? Shred oh no no no. Well don't go look at the website, Alex. All of those things are stupid, except insofar as you have the ability to be fully present there.
Yeah. Uh one her sister comes down the aisle. And it's like, oh my god. I I do know him from Luck of the Irish, the Disney Channel original movie. My father was born in October of 1929. I don't know. Put a dinosaur on a dinosaur. I I un I feel like I really I'm sympathetic. But I approach one of these people at the party afterward. Uh oh. That one's terrific. But your m your model, your model says to me that this is a new revelation that not everybody gets to be rich and famous. I just think they're uh uh uh asked such boring questions and I I went But I was a little bit disappointed because I think I can make a better advertisement for Roderick on the line. It doesn't matter now. Like this this place just shows up for three days and it's like the world that I want and the world that a lot of people It says, um, these these are jewels that are part of It's important to me to say this, which is like I don't continually recheck my son's character sheet to make sure I'm happy with all of his stats.
Hold on a second. And it struck me at that point watching it, and this is why I thought you might like it. Like everything Ann Dowd is in. The bit was a little bit of a Why don't you have a podcast playing on a telephone while you started a f a call to record a professional podcast? And actually they had a funny uh concert album that they put out, Lenny and Squiggy. And then like words that have like a special like I I think hello. I don't know, I got nothing. So we jumped the gun. Like he's he's very he's comfortable with And um then not long after that we got into a bit of a dust up. But you're saying you don't feel like you've met a lot of people where every time they see somebody on TV they feel less sympathy for them because they assume that they're rich and entitled?
Because I'm bad. I got this. That's a no, no. Yeah, I was gonna say lots of obligations That's good though. Where's the Lord? So if it's my niece's son, I guess that's what that would be. Like but besides the fact that there's just so little B-roll that I'm like, I still don't really know what this guy is from. I don't have any Livern and Shirley's that I know of. Oh I don't think she was walking around ra Rachel Dolezalling. Mm-hmm. We got married in the 2020s. I mean this was there all over this place. Mm-hmm. They've realized that they're a character and like they can get roles as almost like a John Hodgman kind of thing, or like, I want a John Hodgman type or that kind of thing. The guy the guy that was in Devs with the deep voice.
I haven't seen Ozarks. I I had to steal it. I mean what's the what what is the bit? Yeah, yeah. Just playing my podcast before a podcast during a podcast. Yeah, no, so anyway, my niece got married and we flew there on Friday and came back on Sunday and it was terrific Do you like weddings? Mm-hmm. Whereas believe me, I get plenty of chances to perform. But we're using Mike's honey because this is a guy we know who makes honey honey and it's really spicy and we want it to be sweet but still spicy. What it's just you know the same thing that's always been going on with what we used to call gay marriage. She's she's in the leftovers. It's like a nesting hat, an occasional hat. Hello, girls. And having been through this, you know, I've been adjacent to weddings, I've conducted a wedding, I've But still I well put a put a put a double pin in this wedding for that because boy did they ever do it in a fucking amazing way.
The other one, as it turns out, you would never have guessed this just watching the ceremony, was also a friend of theirs from Improv. We talked about Bob Dylan's National Skyline. I Kamma. Yeah, I I don't know. Then we now can realize that, right? And I love when there are act breaks in podcasts. Uh you know uh The Kid Stays in the Picture. Oh no. Cause it's and when I tell you about the crowd at this wedding, holy shit, what an amazing crowd. Like, you know, God, you've gotta show that he was in the matrix. Or who was it that got a role in something immediately? Yeah. Uh you mean uh between the bigger. Yes. Let me look at the biggest thing. It was Bob Omker, because they they went into a whole thing about Robert Evans.
I know I'm not supposed to send that, but the sad pensive face and the grimacing face are my two favorite emojis. And you learn that like John, what's his name, John DiMaggio, the guy who does um Jake? Oh, is that in What the fuck, man? Yes. And taking away all other factors as you're stipulating. Oh he did. Like he's in everything, right? We hate it when our friends succeed. He he's worked with Scorsese a lot, which is a lot of people. Yes. Let me look here. I don't okay. Did you fall in? You know, it's uh again, not your party, not your music, not your guests. But some shit went down at this that was fucking incredible. I don't I I I I don't know. Like I uh another thing I really liked about this movie in particular is they talked about like the In some ways, right?
Don't join Second City. Hi. Well if you do it on purpose, yeah I would have to agree. What did your your grandfather do? Jordan B. I you know, we really should be No. This is do by Friday, a weekly challenge podcast with Alex Cox and Merlin. It it it's bad for so many reasons. That's totally fine. It it was Trump and g uh gay marriage in general, which I I just walked up and I said, Hey, you did such a good job today and like I I really you don't know me, but like um you know I'm always Did you know that? But you're like, oh my God, those two fucking hate each other. Layla can make a cabinet out of anything. This is Do by Friday, a weekly challenge podcast. I used to be a person who You did. Great Robert Evans.
Right? I just I was like, this is so incredible. I met Liz Winstead and she was incredibly nice and but like just all that stuff was like it was but it was a little at a point a little overwhelming.
