No timestamps yet for this episodeThis week's challenge, use datum. There's a lot. Oh. Yeah, I think I got a back injury from sleeping. How's your name? Gosh, what's his name? So you did you almond butter on the datum, is that what I'm hearing? And he's like, a very good friend of Jonathan Taylor Thomas, a very good friend of mine. Oh wow, he's a literal grammar Nazi. Why can't I drop a marker when I put my stinky AirPods Max pads when I cleaned my AirPods Max apps yesterday? I try to keep my Yeti cooler nice. Let's say I wanted to take a bite of half of one of those weeds, not a problem, because the entry allows me to say I had 0. The best way to understand items, items are books. Hey guys, your old pal Merlin, and uh see you in cyberspace.
It's not the can you? And part of one of the things it does in doing so is to say, like, if I hear this, I'm gonna like minimize that because that sounds like noise, if you like. Like, oh, it's got that kind of gun and it's got that kind of turret and that specifies like might maybe all all the way down to like what model that is. Or something. It's difficult to figure out. Well yeah, you know who that guy is in real life, right? Nice. I was a great guy with my voice's EP. And she's like, you ain't nothing but a hounddog. You know, it's like when people say, Oh, I've been sober for thirty years and you're like, Well, you know, I'm about to get my second day token, if that's a thing. And especially now that he seems so much less dangerous than ever.
I'm a victim, I'm a verb. See, but that's an object. Yeah. Sir, it's a good thing. He had a show like on Comedy Central with him and a fake Mike Pence guy, and it was well done, but it's a little hat on a hat while the Trump thing is happening, right? That's right. It's gonna be Apple. Cyracuse knows how to make stuff that scales up. This stuff that I really wish I could switch off personally. the moisture goes through a little screen and collects as gross water at the bottom of a small or large bucket. What? Well it makes you seem a little bit simple, Alex, when you do that. But I'd be wrong. I I might put the song in different. Hold on, hold on. Because if we start getting into a world where you, by fiat, are allowed to change the things that we said retroactively, we're getting into a hypernormalization type situation.
Now and uh no not so much, no. You understand? Did did you notice that last week, um, there there was a point where you were talking and it was very, very good. We need like this many at least this many dings this week. And I would never put in a ding. But then there's tracks that include things like advertisements. Finally figuring all of this out and blah blah blah. You know, I hope you're doing okay. I I don't have a high resolution of my roboism wallpaper anymore. But if I have a shirt that doesn't have any sort of logo on it, it still is just like, oh, tits. Uh uh no it's not. Uh what are you listening to this? They did I know they'd famously did this one. I think that's generally, you know, that's one of your Richard Kine false flags.
What does it really mean to be there? A panty drawer? It's not a dangerous thing, uh, but it's a little bit of a habit, uh, a tick. And I say, here you go. And so and if I forget, I'm a kid. Not Denzel. Victim is uh. He says badly when he means bad, which is a tip-off. The crazy part is, as of right like right now, it's been over seven years since he announced his candidacy. the she's she's a gossip reporter who got real lucky and worked hard. you know, I just learned last night come from Finland. I I think that there would be a lot of outrage if VEEP were to be uh a show that was out now. I no, but I took it off uh is it supposed to like how long is the slap relevant for for? But anyway, like he did the thick of it and um stuff like that.
The immediate predecessor for Veeep would be something a little bit like the George W. Just all the things Americans have learned in the last fifty years after all the stuff came out about the CIA, uh stuff came out about the Pentagon Papers, Watergate, all that stuff. No, it's a web slot. So there's some API behind the scenes that's making the website happen, but it's also an iOS app. Trying to understand items versus entries and how the attributes work and then what the categories do. And an entry and and then and then over time you can do stuff that builds up. to do some really, really neat stuff with a combination of how you record things and how much of something happened and then how you display that.
And you can integrate all of these different things you're tracking. And then you could be tracking also your you could do your coffee, your pills, your cocks, all of the things that you put in your mouth. High level. I've been doing it. still on iOS, it needs to open the whole app. I bet this is more of a like as I say in baseball rebuilding year. There's there's a lot that's gonna go wrong in the next year. Let's put it this way, I really doubt they're gonna double the size of that team right now for a variety of reasons. So we need to rewrite all of our apps in Swift UI and that it doesn't we've already kind of come up understanding that apps work this way and do it this way. accumulated over time, just the 7030 stuff.
All the stuff from 2007 to 2009, people were like, oh my God, do I really have to like break like crack this phone to make apps for it? Like what are you gonna do? It's a crazy time. It's a very, very, very large building. with uh the Ned Ryerson guy as the CEO in the conjoined triangles of uh anyway. And we're doing this. Yeah, and and well, you can also build shortcuts that start and stop timers automatically, which I have for uh due by Friday and every show I record along with like every scheduled What is uh you do timery mostly for tracking time, correct? But I just like an old puppet act that moves from town to medieval town. And I want to be able to slurp up like, okay, every time there's a little um do like the little doctor starts think it's interesting a little bit.
set uh set to public and not private. As a person who does understand how it works, it sounds like you haven't used it all. But there. But if for certain kinds of things one wants to track, which is part of was how I conducted the challenge this week, was trying to find stuff that's made sense with for because I there's a lot of stuff in the world I want to track. computing ambient data, there's ways to like you know pick up a whole lot of stuff. I'm I'm not uh I'm I'm using it in a way that I I don't think it's meant for, but also I'm doing the exact same thing. Poop, call grandma, call mom, change my pillowcase, change the seat sheets, change toothbrush, buy Pokemon Goat coins, change the air filter, forget to take my meds and uh visit the Kratom store.
When did I? That's pretty weird. But like people are not just gonna go visit datum. the Cron Analogy site. I want that stuff. But like all you do is you would you would have you have dates and you have events and there's associations and like datum, that's what I'm asking for is not really that complicated. Like I've done that. could start at least sketching how you would build that. um database. To keep dry, to get dry, all I have to do is put it in that Yeti cooler and within a day, it'll dry the fucking shit out of it. Now if I choose to, guess what I can do? What do we know about weeds? What? Margaret Atwood's Handmaid's Tale. But like in a similar way, I like that this makes me be a little bit more mindful and click a button and see what happens.
I think you haven't talked much because I talk so much. I have nightmares where I'd be so good at doing podcasts on my own. I would say that uh as a person of confusion, I am indeed indeed a POC because I'm always confused. That sound might go in. Yes. I'm not fast. Okay, that would be incredibly funny. On data. I have um Do you enjoy doing this doing the show, Alex? hanging over your head. Uh but there was a point where it one of the horns, like the an air horn, like cut off and then it sounded like something happened Okay, the um the thing is like uh I know I talk a lot about D script, that app that I love and the app that I use for editing Roderick on the line. When I couldn't hear your bell, for example, I said that is very similar to what happens with Studio Sound.
The drum part that begins the song Sugar from Sand, and then at the end of the you hear this, oh the long chord John hits at the end of the unreleased long winter song, Sugar from Sand. And you know, so Studio Sound, like roughly speaking, it does a very clever thing, which is it says, okay, you have all these tracks. Does that make sense? like everybody would very much sound like they're in d Steve would sound like he's in a room with cat litter. Well and like you know it's cost benefit analysis in life, Alex. to listen, right? effort and occasional frustration, but also of like, well now I've also endangered the solidity of a thing that I know work. It truly isn't that I take a photograph of myself with a brain on it.
It just has it's called a subtlety, which I think is a cute name. But all of those shirts are very, very expensive and I don't want to be a Ralph Lauren person, but if I'm a brain person. And there's a lot of polar man on them though. You know, somebody who understands planes or somebody who understands, you know, you know, um ships can like know from the the outline like on the horizon. Oh, I love what you're doing. Here we are again in France. uh was to use slash rediscover the app or service datum. I I I I I miss this guy. But I so you watched some of it, you saw the clips, is that it? Like a man who walks with a like a walking stick. He um he gets the looks and of course the the mannerisms and and all most of the voice, but James Austin Green have you heard James the guy from SNL the the This new new guy this season.
Uh very, very slowly announced something last night. But I mean like I don't know that's like trying to do your executive recruiting in a methadone office. I think I think the jig is a little bit up. I think I think he's had a couple good good coinages. to the governor to know that he wasn't even given like Kudaburger type nickname. Which is good because he's boring to m me now. So God. Uh I do you think that Veeep would I don't know hit as hard uh or be as popular if it was oh I've gotten a lot better at computers. Just to s to state the obvious, I think it really helps a lot that VEEP happened um mostly at a time when American politics was not at its craziest. made it something that we could appreciate because it was just enough m metaphysical distance from what was happening in the world.
Oh people go in there and they and they they go there, they pay a cover there, there's a two drink minimum and they just sit there in the pussy hats and go, That's not funny. But I changed it to make it funny about cis white ladies. all the craziness we went through with, you know, the era moving from Carter to Reagan and I think the fact that it came out at a time that pound for pound was a little calmer, at least in the White House. I think uh the example they give in the documentation. Well, 2014 or 1614 I used it for a while. You but you can also build uh shortcuts like with um Timery, my time tracking app. Right. And an affordance. That that that that that and like this is not the year to decide to throw a lot of resources.
You're gonna have to make something with stuff like shortcuts integration for that to even be conceivable. The only people that stand to make it uh really a lot more as far as we understand the environment right now, the only people who stand to make even incremental more money That's more people who aren't going to be buying an app. and trying lots of things has a much better chance at this. And then on top of it all, there's just all the little like we talked about this. And then when it did happen, well then that that was the beginning of this long roiling like relationship that developers had with Apple, right? Uh from from a from a phone standpoint. You're not you're making stuff because of Apple, not in spite of Apple.
I mean, would Angry Angry Birds em for example gotten that big if it was only available on Android at that time? or came became free-to-play, sorry, free-to-play empires. So like, you know, somebody we talked a a real long time be uh because I I wanted to, we talked about switch class a lot on RecDiffs last night and how that was a scratch and itch application. The shine is off that rose, you know. Yes? Spark is just the email app, but Reddle has a like a yeah, the the idea is they use it as a suite and sell it as look at uh how these all work together. I wouldn't have paid for that. Uh whatever that is, and and and end frame. right like uh yeah it's in all of the good job when i say good jobs i mean high-paying jobs where you get health insurance and don't have to pee into a bottle in a factory That's true.
block of time that it knows is of the project due by Friday and of the type podcast recording. I believe there are way not I believe I know there are ways to pull sp certain things in because I used to do that directly with Toggle and uh Zapier. s uh start recording that. two different aspects of something in this way and is still collapsible in a way that's sensible. And caffeine, which I was going to use datum for, but I'm like, wait a second, what is an instance whatsay Okay, what is there? But go ahead. Like it I like the way this site is put together. Um, like a home page, if you go to the root, like datum. didn't love it, I guess. in a different app called When Did I? No. And then the the I mean understand well, I'm sorry, I sound like I'm being very testy about this because I I love this app.
Like, this is a very, like, I would even call this a late Web 2. Pipes and wires that well, I don't know how to put it, but like the the it's important to understand you can feel this in the documentation. And dis display well like a display just means like here's the thing I want on my little page. It's not meant to integrate with Apple Health. But I mean the biggest problem if you like is that this is a website. that enables people to to track something with the following characteristics. Do you know what I mean? Right. And it was fascinating. Yeah, I I I do wish it had all I do actually kind of wish it had all the bells and whistles and I really wish I could hook it up. Um, but there's a a known issue with them, which is that the little pads, the magnetic pads, stick they get stinky.
And Apple has a page about this, how to clean them. app for. I I am still uh getting that, but imagine the think of this less as a website and think of it more as a database. And so, but um it's very important to me. Cleaned off rinsed my headphone pads. To keep things warm. an interesting project to do. But then what you can do is for items I can have an item called let's say weed one, which is uh let's just say like the purple ones I like, right? One I like called Level Lights Out. But then it gets weirder because then they pivot to the example of which running shoes you were wearing for how many miles. If you have uh iced coffee, remember to hit the button. A bit of uh I think my joke became racist.
To uh start a bit, an ad advertising section, and John s snorting to end it. Second, you'll probably hear some seemingly strange noise. Mm-hmm. a lot of stuff that you did, but you know, if you go to relay. And th it's it's like where the like Ralph Lauren Polo or what is it, I Daz logo is. The reason I in enjoy a shirt that just has a little logo in the corner is it doesn't bring attention to my boobs. Have you thought about wearing like Razzle Dazzle camouflage so nobody can even see this? Um in World War II, if you wanted to disguise the shape of a boat, you could paint it with what's called razzle dazzle um uh camouflage. Uh euphor euphoria. Huh. Uh he's the door man in um the par you wouldn't know this, the parody Steven Sonheim parody co-op.
I don't know his name. Yeah, that's a uh pay everything's the system works. He looks kit-bashed. nails every cubic inch of the Trump thing. It would be like if if they rolled out Mick Jagger and he's like, everybody, uh, everybody ready to sing a song? And I immediately uh tuned in. I think we would probably figure out that he's one of those guys who doesn't understand subjective and objective pronouns. Twitter and uh Jeff Tiedrick and all the other things. No, excuse me. fun with it. that has its final transformation into a snufflepous. I mean it took uh that's not fair. And like it w there was a certain sense of at least like stability. that was like just like too close to what was happening with Trump and they needed to like change it up.
I think the thing we all agreed though in 2016 was that at least it was going to be great for comedy. So if I can set myself to a task, uh every time I have an iced coffee, I can click a little button or you know, add it as what's called an entry. It's really frustrating. things that have shortcut in integration. uh completely. Apple. things or you can use shortcuts to start and stop timers but you don't need to open the app and I have the same thing with I was I that that's partly why I I don't disagree with you You know, Apple, like, you know, I and I'm sorry, this is such a stale, ultimately one of the stalest and most boring rants that somebody can have. You know, like is it possible that the companies owned by Elon Musk succeeded in spite of him, not because of him?
But like back in the day, people would would make what they thought the market needed, whether that was a notes app or a task manager app and all those things. the email app I did use. the the hallways in one way or another at Omni Group, like they had a a building, like a big building full of people making apps for two or three platforms. And I'm very impressed with what they did, but it's not done. Oh I we're already seeing or I I think we're already seeing it at like Riedel and Spark. Let's just say mini companies, which is like, oh, IT guy goes like, oh yeah, but you know, we already pay for all this Microsoft stuff, so we're switching to Microsoft Teams. Kind of. You know, and and where there was still we were still in that pendulum swing of like, oh my god, it's so hard to get enough talent.
I mean, like Richard says on Silicon Valley, what you remember there's got to love I love I'm watching the season where they do the skunk works, the one. you know, minimize losses and uh if I'm you know like like if things have been going great, but like I think really saliently they know things are gonna continue to not go great. event it it's great. So many of my things are sudden or they aren't scheduled. portrayed in boxes connected by lines. You know, it's the equivalent of you know Noah Glass had just had a great run kind of stuff. Just just to have a hello world. uh the like comparison charts especially with sleep and uh food and water and medicine uh inputs and it just there's so much friction that I'm bearable with this in b inbearable, but in this doesn't have as much, but I don't f I didn't find the benefits.
Like there's probably a way for you to like again with shortcuts or I don't know any kind of automation. I uh track uh uh often. For you, but I couldn't figure out how do you ex can you export it as a CSV or anything? I have to do like I have repeating tasks in whatever task manager I'm horny for that month, but it is sort of interesting to just. And they have give a couple examples. Do you know what I mean? But it it would be a sight about showing about showing you the distance between like in time between two events or tracking events. Yes. No, I think probably we know what damp raid is, right? And so every time I use the Eddy Cooler, I clean it and then I dry it off and I put that in there.
After about a day, that brings the relative humidity of that Yeti cooler to as low as usually ongoing 19%, but if you leave it close long enough, 13% humidity, which is Uh that gives me a gentle nudge toward more mindfulness. with your gate and so then I added like a tiny bit of air horn later on throughout the thing because it just sounded more natural. a function on Roderick on the line. What it does is so what it does is Studio Sound looks at all of those tracks and then figures out how does this. You know, if I'm doing that wackadoo stuff that my um my bocaster does now, um uh that that like will make different sounds, make give me the dick. It gosh man. Because you like the way they feel?
Um normally when I have a neurological event, as you would say, it takes a while to bounce back, but it's good. But that just could be I don't know, that could be a psyop for big Hollywood. Um the uh Scarlet and Violet Pokemon soundtrack that has been released. Stuff. And I had completely forgotten that it's way better known as, quote, a Nirvana song. I was disappointed. no idea who these names are except for Steve Kornacki because I don't have actually. And uh there's that there's that lady who like uh you know Selena's always having to deal with. Uh well I don't I don't I don't know the answer to that, but I think it came at such a good time. Which is you identify things in uh in your world that you on some level kind of want to keep track of.
With an X. And um we can talk about that and like what all you do with this. too many buttons, I think. I mean like I mean look at all the ways that David Smith has done a clever thing to say like well here's a landing page when you for when you click on almost anything Given that preview works fine for most people, you know what I mean? Exist. That's why I like it. Um, I mean, think about like I was talking to Syracuse last night about like you know, he is, as they say, a full stack developer. from Meta, um, obviously from Twitter, from what was the other big one recently? Yeah. Mm-hmm. Uh it was so boring. I I on the one hand, there's obscurity by sorry, security by obscurity where that's probably nobody unless except a super creep would notice.
And you know, pages have displays or statements and um but yeah so you didn't notice that for a second. It's uh sort of like bearable for me, but because I loved all of the like conditions you could set up and uh cannot be tracked any other way. uh make I I do need to export it as a CSV to create a chart and it's cool that datum does that are displays are the way that they explain a lot about how the app works in a way that I find extremely confusing. I know enough to use a word like left join and have a rough idea what that means because I've had to do it in the past. All of that stuff really on the at some level, and that's a very that would be a very simple website. That's what I loved about that was the one thing.
Written by Margaret Atwood and it has this many pages. How can I put this? That I I don't poke more holes. music, uh composition, right? It's called error error correction. Three weeks? You know, like, oh did you actually know? They came very strongly to this beautiful very special place with Melania and I But the example they give is like so I mean like a straightforward one that comes right ripped from the headlines is like I'm let's say I want to remember uh I'd like to find myself drinking less iced coffee. At least the granularity, and this is even before, you know, you get into the difference between uh. I think. X thousand people or whatever. Um like the you gotta everybody's gonna move to Swift UI.
Yeah. A lot of them I think are just because um enterprise c uh companies buy thousands of them, which is actually surprising that smaller ones. And like I think that was even for that time very emblematic of like a certain kind of think about a field like AI or ML. specifically the time of day that I would take an anti-anxiety thing. f perhaps for the kinds of things that you n want or need or choose to track, this is probably not the device for you. But they use like I say, they use a lot they explain a lot of it through how what a display is. pretty big project, certainly, right? I'm great. It's it uh Bick and Bach, also known as Cortex, is a show that I adore but often don't have time to listen to.
Oh it's not the first time. No, I think that's a good thing. But I don't have access nor do I want access to cable news. Like the the the the sometimes unpredictable turnaround times on review, the sometimes very capricious, you know all that stuff that's Anyway, that's what I'm saying. I just realized that I am not only using this wrong in in theory. in uh an a basic cs I could see somebody saying here's our here's our here's our design document what i what i want is i want functionality Because what am I doing ultimately? I got a call from founder of Cox's Cux, Kara Fagan, because you know I've got do not disturb on very uh very liberally. I didn't talk to you Excuse me Excuse me I did not talk to you Siri Come on Uh Do you No, I just set up the shortcut that says at this time every week start and stop this.
As a joke. I want to be able to go in and say things like that I've had to do with spreadsheets. Well, I've created a field, an attribute called book title. And then you went is what you did. Ooh, did you get loop loop back working? Ten thousand hours, fifty thousand hours? If the drawer is closed, is it really on the drawers? Oh, I think that's a good nickname. Well she was at the New York Post before that, but um and um well politico before that, but but you know, before politico she was at Do you think so? Whoa, whoa, whoa, what what do you mean? I mean it would be so nice if I could do a bunch of stuff where it was all happening and changing and so forth. $5 a year instead of $3 a year or whatever.
Anyway, that's why I'm happy that Datum works at all. Um, it is good to it like I I've started uh um tagging things actually with emojis. And isn't that cool? that what belongs under items and what belongs under entries in terms of attributes. And um so the each those are items. Okay. Ooh, I don't have anything to shake. Or you're gonna have to choose to basically just abandon it like an old haunted boathouse and walk away. Does that make sense? What's your take on datum? Like w uh, you know, I'm we're not gonna m make a fifty percent uh increase in our development efforts until we understand a lot more about where this company in the world is going. Redal, I remember. And I can just track that over time because guess what?
Oh, well at least I'm I'm high end. That's so in the aggregate that's such a compliment and in specificity it's it's kinda hurtful. That that does has even fewer bells and whistles, but it's just basically like poking a button and putting something in a spreadsheet. But one of the things I did, so I rinsed off those and and now here's where it gets weird. Really dry. The air horn guy in particular, I think, has really kind of reached the end of his tether. Clip not clip club, but inside out, the elephant. You have been sleeping well all four nights, yes. Who's the guy I like? Or doing something a little bit below the waist, but with a sharp object. That's an object, not a subject, Alex. That guy who's on with Brianna in the morning, John um John uh the John guy who's on early in the morning on CNN, I think he's having fun with it.
Uh digga digga digga digga digga digga this week's challenge is to try datum again. Oh, interesting. That was I'm sorry that was so long. And like that's just I'm kind of amazed that in that landscape where there's such a mature thirty years of enterprise sales relationships in place, I'm kind of amazed anybody can sell anything to anybody at this point. Um but that's all at least in some way a I think a step to like And the main thing, oh look at what is is this directly from Datum? And it's you can also build it with shortcuts and uh but I just I don't rarely uh use it, but I some of it it's l like some things And then I want to be just all the basic stuff of saying like the time since the police's synchronicity came out is the same amount of time as like the first Elvis record of synchronicity or whatever.
Under the category of things I put in my face. Can you ever just say hello? I could argue and it w and I wouldn't win. Okay, they're not birds. Cox. I mean, there's just there's a lot of buildings that were I mean, it really already seems like a spritely couple years ago when everybody was growing, growing, growing. So you um uh you gave it a throw. You called me and then you were sing a l singing a little tune that will never make it into the show because this is how you treat me now. They're not gonna they're not gonna see a a double digit increase in the number of units sold with iPhones. Think about all the uh the work that probably went into bearable when you look at bearable and doing such an we talked about that for a challenge here.
Like why was this never made into a widget that you could drop on your Tumblr? Items have attributes, entries have attributes. Guess what I've done? And you could do that. Okay. I legit forgot that Nirvana did, I think, maybe even three Me Puppet songs. What does it even mean? But that that was part of the uh why I was kind of just really surprised to see that there was a widget. Especially like my my my w my wife used to got got used to got to use uh Slack at work and then there are like exactly the same thing that I've heard from my friends happening at No, no, no. Because it's very pure. Could you have a little bit of time for me to mention that? I've tracked closely as I can down to the month when I lived when I lived for, you know, a rent paying amount of time anywhere.
W why I have uh yes. I I don't know about this. And so um I've been using it again. This is so long, but I think it's kind of interesting and it reveals what a broken human I am. Is it your opinion that we should be CGP graying this, passing the edit back and forth until we're both satisfied the other person sounds like an idiot? I I keep most of I keep everything in. Mm-hmm. But what the affordance can do is basically just act as a bookmark. What's the difference between a display and a statement? This is gonna sound extremely Casey Liss. You could argue at one point in my life I was smart. I do. So like whenever I do a man, I've done it like twice ever, a big change to my recording setup, like anybody cares.
Oh my god, bless away my bless you, bless your heart. It looks like somebody like put him together from several different kits and then decided to make him look like he'd been hit with lasers. Reddle's the calendar is five people, right? Uh that is that is a piece of redundant data. Maybe even like a 2002 app in some ways. Well what the fuck does that mean? Was it how many pages I read today? I should nod it at this show. I grabbed a legend. I do this I do this thing that started as a as a uh practical thing and I think it became a little bit of a What are you listening to? Um anyways, that's back out. Now Josh Dawsey, I think Josh Dawsey's having fun with it. Well at least comedy is back on Twitter.
Doesn't everyone sort of have a large building there and they're mostly empty except for Twitter now? You're not paying for fancy, right? I want a site where I can go in and do stuff like track all the events in my life that are important and see, oh, what what was what album was released on that day. I did it for my wife one time to show her. What's the show called? Uh I'm actually doing very well. The guy from uh Seven, what's that actor's name? Have you heard him do Mr. It's a web slapper. And then that's not even talking about Salesforce. Zappi. I can use datum to say, first of all, remember that I did this thing, like put this in here, and then I can just see what is the relative humidity inside the Yeti cooler to give me an idea how dry the headphones are getting.
You could change your shape that way. Hello, bye. I have not gotten better at the Siri. Yeah, it is. Like you can have this kind of a chart. I mean for somebody America for somebody any given day American politics is at its craziest. I'm not trying to be contradictory, but when you're doing that in the today view, that's too many clicks too. And so when there's something that does anything modern, I'm happy. I've accidentally created a a drying cabinet. I do. Yes. Sounds like a plan. Yeah. This is really dumb, but I think it reveals why this is useful. Well, we know there's a superset of something, a category, if you like, called Things I Put in My Face. Yes, I can. But when I make water for somebody or I have a drink for myself, I like to make sure the ice is well distributed.
Because it would be mean about Kamala Harris? What'd I miss? Am I making any sense so far at all? Merlin, what did you what what's going on with you, Merlin? I'm not trying to shit on this. No, I I agree with everyone. I did. Or or or when I say things like you you don't know what year it is by two years and then you change it later on, it makes me seem to be a little bit more Not a function, but a a role, which is that it's the thing I I I I'll tell John, like before we record an episode, I'm like, oh What do you think? That actor who's in everything? I miss his weird skin. Did you watch it? Ron DeSanctimonius is not a good nickname. I wish they would give a full example that encompasses every aspect of named kind of information in this.
Well, I'm not simply just trying to track a thing I've thought about and done poorly in the past. Make water? Really? What do you m mean by that? That's what datum is. I might re-record the song. I'm here. Yeah, yeah. Oh really hard. Again, I don't like a a record fifth fifth challenge in a row, you do you alb almond buttered a little bit? I wouldn't pay a hundred dollars a year for that app in a million years. Like he knows how to do that kind of stuff. I know that there is a way. Like who uses data? It's not meant to be on your Facebook page. Has a uh uh nineteen milligrams. Yeah, I gotta make make make water. But I guess what I'm saying is um QED, something we discussed earlier, is like, or at least I ranted about a few episodes ago, is like, hey.
You'll cut all that out and make me sound dumb, right? All all of the stuff now it is, I feel like for a lot of people I know, it's very much a like I am doing this in spite of Apple, not because of them. I said hello and you asked me how I was. And I don't think that that is necessarily you a adding a bell to be able to do that. Well the benefit of that is in the end I will have basically replicated exactly what I already have at the potential cost of not simply time. I I it's got a round logo. You know, just the usual the usual stuff. Yeah, on the on the um and and and Kirk Kirkwood played with them on the video for it. I mean almost everything uh that you will put here will be a display. I don't have the time or the inclination to fact check whether you have accurately shared with our listeners the things that we each and both actually said at the time of recording.
But that takes time, it takes practice, and to do well, it would take me like you know But like you know, the guy from SNL is amazing. Like very, very, very wrong. And I've done it before. I uh like I do with, you know, certain kinds of plants. Guess what? And of course I can always add a ding, but I always thought it should be uh whatever that is, diegetic. It's things like the John I forget which is which. They no, they do. In the same way that like the the what is the website that Merlin Mann has wanted since before there were websites? Well I'll tell you, genius, that means I don't leave it outside all summer where it's gonna get gross. You added a note under news and topics. I uh well say now because if I want to benefit from what Studio Sound does Did you know that Hound Dog is not an original Elvis Presley song?
They're not the two main ones are dragons. You reclaim you're still reclaiming Cox? That's accumulated over time. I've always liked the way it's put together. If it's gotta be manually tracked, well then that already limits. Like uh bloop, I called my mom, bloop uh uh I called my grandma. Uh input of drink stuff is really handy. If I get to the end of the day and I see giant holes, that tells me something. Do you enjoy it? I'd love to hang out with him. I slept great last night and then this morning I listened to pulp and I was super into it. Trump, sir? We don't say that anymore, but like he's uh or a reverse grammar Nazi, huh? A web slapper. But even then, it's a tap and then it's a swipe up to dismiss it.
So it's just sucking that down. And and normally I'm not a fan of horizontal stripes, but but it's like, is it horizontal? Well, you get some more brain shirts and you can paint stripes on them. I don't know a lot about advertising and I don't know a lot about sobriety. Not j he doesn't look like him. And I think I I feel bad for the guy because like he obviously doesn't have a lot else to do. Uh, but now because I'm not using uh not I'm not using calendars as much, but because Well if you're me you don't do it at all. com to see which miles I run which which athletic shoes I ran the most miles in. Well, that's because it's trying to make sure that everything doesn't sound like you know, if Jason didn't do what he does on the Incomparable I love it.
She gives her the very, very heavy Angry Birds clock that she has to hold the entire press conference. Do tell, do tell. Uh you kind of glossed over the you push a button part. Somebody like Greg has bet a better chance at this than somebody who's a team of like five people going like, well Really dry. And you can get those dampered cups. And I'm just cribbing this straight from their documentation. Well that now we're just we're talking about how datum works. Well I'm not asking if you agree. What what's the It would take me um basically pressing you into service or similar to like r practice with me? He's getting a little bit he's getting a little bit more treated very badly. I think he thinks adverbs sounds smart.
And then before that it was when I was trying to write a book that I was using it a lot. But I because I like uh the c we'll we can talk about well, you know, I wanna God it would be so boring to people. What yeah Which is totally fine, but I wouldn't want you to throw all of data under the bus because I'm finding it wildly useful. I shouldn't be allowed. So if you decide you want to go beyond iced coffee, you can say things I put in my mouth. And I I'm not even talking about, you know, the w waterminder, which I uh use that you tap a widget and unfortunately com slash whatever, right? And I have uh When Did I have fast food, get a haircut, change razor. I throw them in there. How are you? I don't know what that Oh that yes, that is why plaid is important.
Oh, I can I can shear oh that's that's not a satisfying sound of it. What's that? Yeah, that's where they're hatched. The lion's share of what I have today is getting your help to help my brain finally understand I've made thro so many different diagrams. Yes. Well wait, so r literally that's it? That's Handmaid's Tale. You could basically become like when they go into that one place inside out where they turn into weird, weird shapes. No, I didn't. Yeah. All right. Uh they do calendars, they do the PDF app. And I uh g got myself into a bit of a tizzy because I don't w want people knowing how uh often I take clonapin. There's an item. Because it seems like it causes you a lot of agita, as they say.
fm slash RD slash join, you're gonna get bonus content. You photograph it sometimes. Well he's back, everybody. I don't want to spoil this and or monopolize it more than necessary, but that enables you to have a way of counting things and if you get into the more sophisticated stuff And timer is just where you do and that goes into the thing to say I'm changing from Okay. I yeah, no, I I paid for fancy because I thought that fancy would be. And there's some people. Which is why I think that this show m me editing this show now is is sort of like um His skin's so strange. Like that's considered a lizard and a bird. I went back to it and I can tell from my entries I haven't used it a lot since I think Wait a minute, did you say buying an app?
Or maybe even before you make it, maybe you have to just show me like sketch how you would start solving the problem of making a site like Datum. Entries and items have numbers. Do you know what I mean? Do you want to just talk for fifteen minutes straight and I'll mu mute? Is this gonna be an escalating thing? And like I if if he would talk about anybody other than himself often enough I think I think Little Marco is very funny. Datum, you have categories of stuff. Each the the items in general are called weed. Challenge. Last night the um the twice now? I know we're not allowed to say that. And I want to pitch people on this being something you might want to look into because I think it's really neat.
Like let's just have wait and see where stuff goes in general, in the world, in the economy, and specifically in the world of I think what was the episode called? That's nuts. And like like like the one that I got through set app, that PDF Nitro that I like a lot. I mean, Jesus Christ. You go to the website, you do the website things. I'm probably just gonna break down and get new ones, but I I I needed to do that. Do oh gosh, I don't have the dock open. I'd love to talk about this. You don't care. You can't you can't prove a negative. Are you getting excited because I'm gonna announce it? She she worked hard. Mm. Um but now a lot of the He's been doing it his whole freaking life. I just have not figured that out yet.
It's not really what what not your tempo. It's just not for me. Like say like when I when my my mother-in-law was this many days old on that day and my kid was that old on this day. Like that's the kind of site that that or datum to me, those are the kinds of sites where it seems like a relatively a kid in a relatively advanced class, maybe even like uh in high school. What is direct action? I've heard from sources inside that he's a nice guy. He is wonderful. Oh Jeff Tiedrick, that guy. Might put some different things in the middle of the side. No, I've tabled all of that for now because I'm doing other stuff, but um Richard Kind, he's um well he's Bing Bong and he's also Oh you uh are. Well, but here's the problem though, is you can have a sparkline or you can have this and you're like, okay, well, but like what what data are you talking about?
I've decided it's part of the process, the clicking. Uh that's that's the that's the noise I made. Anyway, uh what was your question, Relinda? That is the only thing. It's a real slapper. And there's the three of us here, and like, and that's it. Whoa. Yes, the twice-impeached disgrace president who Because what made me excited to try this again was 0 app. It's got an Eve room in it, and it's drawing it down. You're my only friend who doesn't do that anymore. What I am trying to do is. Yeah, it's usually any called false positive. Questions about um like how you cheat with the show, how um you how you're doing. I'm a grown man, Miss Daisy. F if it's a good idea. Like why would you hear noise on a stud a kind of noise on a studio recorded Like I don't know how he he digs in and really captures something very specific about the If you tried to launch Veeep, they talked about this, how they were gonna handle they had one st I think they had one storyline in two thousand sixteen or seventeen.
Bush years, I feel like. We know. It's because of Apple. And then you'll see like down below, suddenly it's it's auto-popped with like all this weird shit from other people. I mean i i I mean, I don't know fuck all Um well that's cool, Marolan. You know I have a recording of all of this, right? It's worse than an ankle. Uh yeah, yeah. Well listen, I listened to the whole thing. I hope so. That's a fun episode. Absolutely. I've always liked the way it looks. I was like, ooh, this is as confusing to you as it was to me. I'm great. Is that a thing you would like me to do for you? You take a photograph of all your shirts with a brain on it, like it's something you're happy about. What is monogamy?
The guy who's on Sesame Street, what's his name? I was excited. But he doesn't have the st that he had last time around. It's just, I don't know. I still don't fully understand. If there is, I've never seen it. I wish they'd continued with that. I used to be good at it and I think I could be good at it again. Okay. I think I mentioned specifically, for example, that a lot of times with my bell right here and the bell has a Yes I do. Um I I'm on a I'm on a little bit of a jag. Give that another. There's all there's all of that stuff that people saw as something how can I put this? Oh, absolutely. And that's do you see like hello at the top of that page? It's, you know, this is a very 2004 app in a lot of ways.
Okay, it's dampered, I don't know what it is. I just uh wrote those as in input, but I I like put in face. And uh the logo is just in the upper uh left-hand uh corner of the shirt or um the stage right as some might say. Well, four nights. Fascism grammar. I've created an attribute called for this item called author. But really, you can't do anything, but you could if you change it in post, that's not fair. I think maybe maybe something's happening. Challenge, challenge. She worked hard, but she um she's so you can but you can tell she's so unhappy. I think I think Von Hilliard. That's it's not much more than a bookmark in most cases. It's just grabbing that from your calendar and it understands that this kind of thing you've identified.
And if you can master that, you will master this site. I added a link. I'd also love to talk about my new uh dream insights. Make water? But, you know, he the way that he does and of course the guy who does Shawnee good for him too. It's it's a watch. And uh and um I think it helped a lot that it it happened Mm-mm. Why this is actually the third diagram that I made this week. And you're like, ah no, I don't I don't want that. Oh god, what is her name? And I'll bet it's not really worth the effort to be able to charge You don't like that I did that? I can just put I'm talking to you. A tick, I think I would call it. And uh oh boy, the orange cheetah jokes come right along with it. Oh, uh angry birds.
I don't understand. It might have been immigration or something. Like, this is not one of those Because I have to be honest, I don't I don't love the fact that I cannot trust you to to make me sound the way I originally sounded Didn't we all agree on that? And when you see stuff like leading indicators, like in this case, like layoffs, like that's because they know what's coming in the next year and and we can't afford those. Um I have a very fancy cooler called a Yeti cooler. Like you would it would sound like seven different rooms. Well that actually sounds more like a spinal tap song. If it's open, is it in the drawer? I know we still have to say, well, he still draws a strong 30% of the Yeah.
He's been doing adverbs since the eighties. Armando Iancci is so gifted. No, I did a hello fennel. Like how what they're doing with Iowa? The Thousand Cuts of Being an Apple developer? Nothing in here goes in here unless I click on it is the thing. And a display is a little widget on your page that displays data that has been recorded. It's got a round logo and one word. Are we going straight to still did you want to talk about uh low energy Hitler bill, Hitler boy? It's I mean it looks it looks That's why every time you go to you get those uh Pussy Hat Humor uh stand-up clubs. Only so much more addressable growth in the iPhone market. Oh, that's right. I want you to be able to associate these kinds of things with I want to be able to, you know, you know what I mean?
But you know, Casey well has cause Casey has talked about how he likes the ritual of putting on a vinyl record and doing it and when we all roll our eyes at that. What's the thing? And it does something seemingly very simple, but also it does something wonderfully simple. I'm guessing this is not the year to th decide to throw a ton of resources into iOS development if you're at a company or a even a small team. But mostly it's I think the way to look at a lot of uh widgets are that as with a Stream Deck, it's a combination of a display They're the reason for the season. Just dumb right now. Oh yeah. I'm first asking does that make sense? Good. They're not birds. I pooped myself in my hand. You know, I have those little projects in my life, things I try to take care of and keep nice, like my cast iron pans.
Oh I'm looking at this. Right, and I said, you called you called me. Am I thinking of the wrong show? Four nights. Jeff Tiedrick. What are you saying? Because I'm I've spent so many hours on this and I still don't have it 100% straight in my head. Items are books. Back that aside up. Like yeah, those people are super strong at at that thing, but like are you sure you wanna That's why it's good. But I think even well And then I realized that it is automatically I know when I need to make water. And he does uh I don't know, yeah, I can't do it, but he he gets that gravelly thing I hope that they destroy each other. You have an item called What's that mean? Oh goodness. What is it, California? Is that a big thing?
Datum is something that I first became aware of when Christ was a corporal many, many years ago. Do you know what I'm saying though? That's what it's for, right? Yeah, it c it kinda feels like um I'll give it a collapse long a little bit. The guy who's currently on SNL that does Trump. You're right though it was, and I'm not gonna I'm not gonna do that thing because I'm uh you know it we already do it too much when we say stuff like, you know I've always loved the decisions that they made about design for this to make this timeless, what I consider a fairly timeless design. This is Do By Friday, a weekly challenge podcast with Alex Cox and Merlin Mann. Uh surprising surprisingly well. No ding.
So I'm concerned sure, yes, flipping your toenails. The Bone. Well you need to put your hand over it and it'll stop doing that. You know what I'm saying? It's just uh uh I mean, okay, so I did understand it, but Um there are, I think, by my count, seven, eight, nine people in the United States who own AirPods Max. Those are all items, items, items. I'm gonna say it. Like if you really want to go forward, as we say, go forward strategy for how to do your development, you're gonna have to do Swift UI. Yeah. I uh I was using it to track my meds But I could see this app, a very basic version, bare bones version of this app, being an assignment And I can tell you, because I've also dropped an Eve room in there, that Where where we were all like smacking our heads and going like, Oh my god, is this really happening?
It's almost a type of, yep, I know. Categories have um categories have items, items have entries. Did you grok that? Fine. I created a um um my datum stuff is private by design, but I have created a page. And when you paint something with razzle dazzle, especially in anything but very bright daylight and very close. What is marriage really? Yeah, well I'm glad he's back. What do you mean by that? No, not mah mah. If you like stuff you want to count. Like no way. Like think, for example, that they never made this a thing you could put on your tumbler. You know my ongoing bitch, the other thing the other thing Meryland's always bitching about, why can't I drop a marker fucking anywhere in any app You can put numbers in there.
I'm trying to develop a new habit for the future, which requires what? Anyway, um I'm going to You have incredible taste in music, except for most of the Guided by Voices albums that sound the same. Like I was like I figured this app was kind of maybe not abandoned, but like I figured, wow, that's that's a pretty modern neat thing to have, but like so many widgets. And then that's all in the context of a global economy that's going like straight directly down the shitter right now. And and he's like, look, there's seven people in the world. They get gross. He's really he's really letting people have it on the rank. Yes, bing bong. Four nights. But I think when people say something like, What really is sobriety?
Was the last time I spent a lot of time with it. Yes, yes. I mean it just feels like the last I mean Amazon is about to Amazon's ten thousand something and it's on mostly in devices. It's a it's I think along the lines of silica packs. Well, what's a book? I know, I know. I'm thinking of the one where they pass the edit back and forth, I think. It's uh Oh See Like the datum does this at all, it makes me happy. How do you have an XO and a Y and a Z axis? I don't think you've used it. Yeah just Google it. Anyway, I think this thing is really neat. I wish they had continued. And in my case, that's like roder can be talking, yes. John coughing. Yeah, I'll be fine. You know, that kind of thing. I think he's having fun with it.
You couldn't but didn't look how after Trump came into office and God bless him, the guy who played Shawani, the guy's name I can't pronounce How many? And uh there are So do we really want to make a ninety-nine cent app? They have a very large building here, Alex. Well just helps me it helps my brain. I don't need to know how it does this, but it figures out how to make it not sound like everything was recorded someplace else. Which is like when I like every night at dinner, it's my job to make water. It's why you're able to make this stuff and put it out and maybe even make some pretty good dough. And like somebody who has that ability to be like not just a full stack developer, but like really particularly good at several things.
That that is uh well known as the Magmar call in Pokemon. No ding. And I felt like kind of an idiot. This looks very real mind mapping. I've actually pitched people about this for over a you know a dozen years. That should get a ding, but it's not is it funny enough? Fine. Would you enjoy that if I started to make you sound confused? No, uh I'll save it for the challenge. No. Maybe the deadline has become more pressing. I'm not gonna do the voice. No. It's so hard to get enough A statement is just some words that you That's a that's you know this is this is for the stuff that only I can enter. Oh, I don't think it's most fun. But it it's useful, I think, to understand when this app came around and what it was for.
It's the kind of thing where you're like, wow, they went kind of right up to like where this would have been something a lot of people adopted. Mm-hmm. I'm telling you, remember that web Oh goodness. Yeah. If you have a team of two, three, four, five people inside your big company that do your iOS apps. Candy Crush or whatever. That's I've decided I like that. If I see there were periods of time where I know I had about twice as much iced coffee as I thought And you were little singing a little song that went doo doo doo doo doo. I just rearranged so here's here's the thing, and I probably shouldn't even say this, because you do need a sword uh of Damocles I I'm I apologize. Like if you listen to Roderick on the line from the first Once a month you get wallpaper.
What? Everybody ready? Everybody here satisfied? Oh God, I love her. I'm just saying that I think of VEEP as being something that came around during the Biden or excuse me, during the Obama years. One bad Twitter joke. But uh I guess that I'm gonna try this with datum. Or can I give you an example? However, they have a shirt that is But anyhow, we don't talk about people's appearance here. That's why it's good. It depends on how rare they are. Is that right? Why the fuck would you tell me that? I've heard that. It's really upsetting how close you are with. It's a website and a platform. Mm-hmm. Um, and then now to suddenly just see so many people laid off. But the other thing I track is water and uh I know, I know.
The displays So if you go to the documentation, which is pretty good, but if you go in and it says, okay, well here's displays. It's very old school in that sense. It's not just you, it's everybody. You could do it most days. But I think it came at a time where we we have enough time away from to me the predecess You you can't fire us. What are other so you like to track yourself? He's that one guy. That's seven years for a man in his late seventies is a lot of years. But it's more than just calendars. 5 of a purple one. I'm not sure. If the drawer is open, then don't be groping. That's not funny. I asked. Well, yeah, yeah, because that's where you get a lot of the benefits of attribute. Yes.
So but if I click on you click on your user account, in this case Hot Dogs Ladies, and I go to that, that's where I see all of my pages. There are ways with automation and as we like to call it ambient. That's what I was trying to do, which made me Right. Well there's a book, uh I have a book in my collection called The Handmaid's Tale. But like, you know, I can have like this this this this overarching set. Uh um Is it it keeps you guessing? Um binging and bong. No. It started as a practical thing and now I think it's a little bit of a tick. I don't he tell me Stacey, I'm a grown man. He's trying to move more into like Truman Capote territory. Oh my god! Yeah. And then there are certain things where Let me let me let me spoil this a little bit.
And I I have one of those that's huge. Um but um it has a really interesting thing that I don't entirely understand but I like called we've talked about it here called Studio Sound. Technically, yeah. You know what? I'm not saying like a side. Yeah, because um because uh because uh because I'm watching season two of Veeep Yeah. Oh, my my my. It is it is merely by my ardour for you and your family Wow. Datum aren't you brushing your teeth? Well yeah, that's You have like a widget where you can track So at first people who were dying to be able to make apps and to get an SDK and Ha ha. Uh I I I I hear every single thing you're saying, but I don't I don't think you understand how this works and I don't think you've used it.
But The big one this week, Alex, I wanted to track the various weeds that I like. Right. But in one instance, yeah, you were there for a lot of that where it's like, how did this sound? I believe that can happen, but I am not smart enough to know a burden. So when I enjoy one of those weeds Here's what here's and I do wish I would love to work collaborate with them to come up with a better single example. No. And this kinda does does its best Uh this week's challenge ding ding ding ding ding ding. He's Little He's the guy who was the creator and showrunner for I guess roughly about half of the seasons. I have been s really spoiled by And it's a bummer. No, not at all. It's a nightmare. And it sounded like that's very clever.
Mm-hmm. But um but I think cost benefit one thing of it is like I have a there's a benefit to me Oh well, it's it's in the document. I you asked me a question and I didn't respond to it. Oh, uh sources on the inside. And it was exactly what I needed to sleep in just a little bit. I'm not at the point yet where I'm counting at that scale I missed him. Um you think he's an actual actual uh Nazi, huh? Shut up. It's called something like, you know, bick and butt He'd be one of those guys who thinks he's fancy because he always says and I, even though he's wrong over half the time. Consequently, A cotton me. So one thing I do is when I store the Yeti cooler, I take a big ass have you ever seen those buckets of damp ride that have like a handle?
And now you have a way of doing it. Is that what we're doing? And then at the beginning you'll hear um No What really is providing for your family? I've decided I've been thinking her name was Big Mummy Thor. A lot of my friends on cable news, I think they are having If you get an ancient exotic, that the ancient exotic set. Like haven't you ever wanted or wanted or in my case made a timeline of w all the houses you've ever lived in? And I also thought, hey, that's is this is a good use of datum Okay, so if I do have books in my collection, what is it I'm tracking about It sounds wow. Why is that surprising, Alex? He's he's been on lots of TV. He clearly didn't put a lot of thought into it. That's so weird.
Kind of. Well, because you know what else I've done now? Isn't that good to know? Well mmm What are you excited about with music this week? I think Kornaki is having a lot of fun with it. If there's anything I ever need to dry. Yes. Hello. Nothing too different from last week, most of the same little more meat puppets than last week, but still most of the same I've been sober what is sober? Um I'm not gonna I'm not gonna do the uh what's that guy's name? Oh wow. I I did, but yeah, but but that's the way that's a good thing. And uh that's that's that's my take on datum.
