311. Just Keep Going

I am I I think I'm becoming internet friends with someone that I like. Okay, I think it's called a bowcaster. I I'm not even kidding about Adderall. This is Do By Friday, a weekly challenge podcast with Alex Cox and Merlin Mamm. Oh you're fucking messed. I don't know how I'm the way I am, why I'm the way I am, but like I I have this feeling 'cause most I don't know, when I was younger I would have dreams, I think. And there was this book, which I still have this book. And I think if there's one canonical line that we associate with, for the love of God, please don't tell me your dreams, it's this one version of this line, which is There's counterclockwise laps in almost all of my dreams, especially the ones that are in Las Vegas slash Disney World.

But uh make sure you're I don't know what you're talking about, but tell me. And this new app is going to let you, and I think the way the way I remember them pitching this was, hey, there's this new app you can use to collaborate with people. And I think serenity was like two orders of magnitude above me in scores like every time. Like if there's any kind of a weird diversion in these like two your little fucked up left joint gets confused and now you get Santa Santa Santa Maria. You can zoom in and out. Well what's stopping you from making it's a fucking digital image. And I was like, uh this sounds really mean, but I was like, you know, he gets so many accolades, understandably. I'm not saying this to be mean.

But I am not terrified it would be uh it's very unlikely that a cop will kill me. I go. Gigantic stepped on your somebody stepped on your changes from the document we were sharing, which is I got I got I got a surprising thing to say today. What's this what's this home planet called? You sure it's called a bocaster? We it might be meningitis one nobody knows. Com comedy's back on Twitter. Hey, we need to talk. We did our recording and we signed off as we usually do at about 7 p. Uh so there's me uh my child grooming me. You said, is there anything in the show you want to cut out? For and and and one time Matchie made it sound like that was for like more than a week. Oh, and like shit. Um like w how I have uh pro propra propranal lol, which uh I I can't pronounce any of the names.

Yeah, the the little mu mine mine are little orangies, uh because uh again, like r really really small. So you didn't know and you start eating them up yum, is that the idea? We'll go, you know, I probably shouldn't drive. Mm-hmm in Trump country over on the east side of Florida, where like it w every party was just in high school, every party was just so much cocaine. Suss out, I know I sent this text message before I took a nap. Oh yeah. I love data. the kind of thing where like we're Shira Keys and I will go back for back and forth for twenty minutes or whatever. And all of the nice things people um I I think I Merlin shouldn't be listening to this, but he's making some very distressing noises.

That's not the TikTok wait mm I'm I don't know if you're until I've started challenging this, Alex. But um I also was listening to music a lot of the time because I love music. I've had quite a selfish woo week. But like am I gonna become that oh I love books person? They're just vast. My setup is very wild. You know, there's a lot happening. Wait, I I did you just commit head crime on yourself? Nice. If you Google it, I'm pretty sure a bowcaster is the name of the weapon that Chewbacca uses.

Just get ready, because from now on, I am going to bury you every time you do this to me. the way you fuck with me for two episodes in a row. Maybe it should just remain. I think it's great and I hope you always keep going is the thing that I want you to remember. Yeah. Okay, let me know when you know. With medication? I would I I would call it microdosing if it was a good thing. It's not it's partly an O C D thing, probably, and partly a like health and living thing. Oh no. Did that happen before or after you were having like an episode? And I didn't remember it being that much, but God that's fucking crazy. Oh lucky. doctor's appointment and I was like, oh hey, uh seems like I didn't I I'm just um can I get a month's supply? I was taking about th uh forty and um And even if they print something on there, like it may still be inscrutable to know which one of these this is. and I'm like, I got a lot of energy and a little bit of hypomania, but eh, it's fine.

Uh no but uh ma Manic is is coming back into the lexicon, but yeah, it it the reason I was uh diagnosed as b bipolar was because um when I was uh eighteen. Fuck shit, what a night. Uh set ramp, it sure is. Like I c like essentially what I was doing I'm like, Merlin is there. W one was completely unenvighted. was because it was like here, here i here's a pro uh some Prozac, young one. Sorry, mom. I'm saying that and and and by the same token, when we talk about blacking out while drinking, um, for example, that does not mean that you like passed out. That kind of thing. I I still I I I'm not gonna lie, I miss it terribly, but on the other hand it's probably better I don't. Oh, it's criminalized when um y you know, you can uh get Adderall down the street.

uh that I used to do music stuff with. Coldwater Army. Then crack came along and everybody got mad about black people. It was like and Matthew would be like, Is it in the folder yet? Get him to know for sure actually actually actually go and upload it be like I can't I'm like I'm in a limo in Dubai now and it's like well How am I gonna hit your side if you don't update it? This week until what what m Monday or uh uh I finally said to I've said to you and I said to Matt, I said, Do you think it would be okay if I posted something on Patreon? I don't think people are gonna freak out about it, but like I I would on the one hand like people to know that there is still an episode coming, but also like, you know, I think it's a good idea.

And so I I workshopped that with you and with Matt and I said, I don't wanna be disloyal and do this behind their back. God, it might have been Monday. Don't let's not worry about that. Mm, you and I I think agree uh uh on this that um unconditional love I don't I do not think is c codependence. I thought that I I this sounds horrible. Y uh yes, I think. And I'll just say, and uh fr I really hate how much this is gonna feed into all the bullshit John Syracuse tells me about how I can't trust myself. to to know like like, you know, Popquiz Hotshot, how long ago did X happen? Between drafting and editing, as Annie Lamont will tell you. And took everything offline and smashed a hard drive. The way someone would like yell into a pillow, I guess.

I'd be all over that shit. Nope. But then I realized, um, and and this had was that very same night, and it was pretty l late, like nine nine or ten o'clock, and um I was like Th well this was the one thing that probably wasn't responsible, but I'm like, I need to fucking know. It's uh uh but there well let there be oil. Okay, we should we should we should probably start. And then I'll send something else after it, like right after it, to be like anyway, beep deep beep, beep, beep. Same. I d I didn't get a chicken hat. Casey seeming like his feelings were hurt about something, and I remember Syracuse of being terrible to everyone. Um relowers the pressure when he's driving around on the island?

Because this is something. Oh yeah. You have to have thoughts that are perhaps a little too original. Seriously, everyone, what the fuck? And I'm like, no, I had an experience where I went to get uh but an experience does not mean to be reality. Just doing the kind of stuff that now we look at and go, Oh yeah. second favorite American poet. And his I guess I don't know if his wife like got used to it or it was just a different time. And my my dear friend in college, Dan, like he one of wh one of my dear friends named Dan. fairly uh often in in c college. No, I could just see you going somewhere and like stealing an animal and putting it in the middle of the phone. And now um I I am lucky enough to have a very good uh good doctor, um, at least for the next couple months.

Kara, I'm guessing. Um being it's a big love you do not disturb. for for the time being because I'm like, no, I want to see all of the in the uh uh I've thought about being on both sides of this. Uh in time. This show is basically um oh fuck. Hey, hey, uh listeners. I know that a lot of you have had the same thing and hearing that you had had the same thing happen to you always makes me ver very uh happy. Okay, so we're skipping that. the street so now it's like thirty feet away instead of like twenty feet away. Uh am like especially among I don't know, like I feel like me and Casey at least have this running joke of like however long it's been since I opened Caliber, it could be a month, the caliber of the ebook management app in Python that's not very pretty but is amazing. These like Matt Matt's results are so amazing. who we've got to have on now for two different things, I think, at this point.

that you could mostly kind of tell as a story, sort of. And f you know, it was a really cool book. Oh my. that I was aware of, uh, Professor Dijkstra, he you were not allowed to tell him your dreams. And like don't even troll him about it. like nope no drinking. And I was at my house, but it wasn't my house. And I think that in my head anyway, that's a result of the fact that we're taking brain garbage and trying to make it into a story. Do you remember that? And I mean I know what all of this means. Museum in an airport and a smaller airport in that museum, etc. as I can. Mm. The COVID plants and plant pots are missing, but they still smell. One morning all the people under a certain height just disappeared and it was the saddest loss.

Used to be and never in a million years would you think about using more than one calendar app. Uh uh yeah or like even if you had that, like but like I've eventually I I bought an app. Which oh there was one called contact cleaner. It fails in a way that you can understand and do something about. were like now everybody's fucked up because now I don't know who the truth is. Sub EtherEdit had that with a text file in 2000, I'm gonna say probably three or four. Um because you're like, you know, you pick up the case. It's the one where they they recreate all the the second and Dart uh yeah yeah. What is it, enable hacks or whatever the the the code is for cheating that my kid uses?

So it's on 16. And because it I felt like I remember being pitched as collaboration, here's me, you ready? Should we tell you, man? I think what I said was this feels like an uh sit thinking probably of Subitha edit, I said something like this feels like an ambitious open source project from the mid-2000s. This is not going to replace Affinity Designer. or whenever to play with. But but but I was like sorry. I'm going down to raw materials because I made an area down here. If you stop thinking about this as a collaboration app and instead think of it as a free drawing app, so I've selected it, I'm clicking, I'm going to format, I'm clicking, I'm going down to image, mask with shape, mask with shape.

quote bubble and now I'm gonna have a really neat way to have his nipple talk. when I'm drawing on the iPad with a pencil, which I don't do a lot, but I've used Procreate a fair amount, and I've used Linea. Because like if you think about the way a document works electronically, it sounds really dumb, but like let's say you look at something and you said, please create an image that is um portrait There it's I wish there was more of a sense well, there's a lot to talk about here and we don't really have time, but you know, there is a lot about this is that's really neat. A fair amount. Well, 'cause if you readjust your perception of this, you create not I I'm not I don't mean to be that silly, but even let's just say the size of like a science project poster board.

What isn't that crazy that it works on your phone? And now the the map is not the territory. I'm seeing you can okay, you can bring you can't be a good thing. about how I like sending things to notes and reminders from Safari. I do I do, you know. to uh I w uh what making making fun of me and alluding to me losing my mind which is not well not an illusion I had the illusions But she doesn't remember that she doesn't remember. popped up and uh I mean yeah No I didn't see where'd he pop up. you just keep going is deeply admirable in a real like actual legit way. And I I was in the lobby of the hotel and a apparently at one point I set the bell boy's coat on fire. And then you say those are adorable. You said oh you don't remember. Yeah, I mean, I I don't even want to encourage people to have an expectation, but well yeah, exactly. on this array, point item point one zero two is like wonder where the episode is. And I mean I yeah, okay. There's all so many evenings where it's like eight o'clock and I'm like, oh shit.

This is setting aside that you want to like make sure it's the right thing and is it doing the effective thing and you gotta really keep an eye on dosage, right? It typically takes serotonin re selective serotonin reuptical. Yeah. five uh three uh sorry instead of taking um uh three five colors right uh yes different different color um on iOS.

So I when I started to feel a little bit goofy, uh uh w fla flash forward to thirty-two year old Alex in twenty twenty two. Be because I when I finally I feel I thought that I edited last week's episode at least three times. felt that you had edited the show. Well it implies that there's a lot of people that are low functioning. I I like I'm like Maddie, does this f sound fine? Were you confused? It is for um most folks and not just neurotypical folks, but uh uh people who have depression or or anxiety or ADHD. I'm like, oh this is who I am. a week and a half of a blackout of uh like I I I when you're having a manic episode and you're not aware of it It is not just a uh you know, a an Adderall based memory.

i the issue with manic episodes is um I felt to from what I r uh recall, which it I feel as if I remember i everything. y you feel just like yourself. When you're when you take it, like I would get legit so much shit done. I feel like that thing Bruce Lee reportedly said about don't hit the board, hit two inches behind the board, like I have a huge sense of momentum. And like just give me the next thing. This decision I finally had to make was is that a wholesome way to spend the rest of my life is walking into a pharmacy with a physical prescription so that I can and that they said really h hurtful things to each other and got really, really weird. Yeah, you feel like yourself. Exactly. And then I kept going around.

are that he was never on time once in his entire life for anything. You know, I think a lot of the w I feel like in retrospect a lot of the awareness of cocaine came out of I want to say was it Len Bias, but whoever the baseball player was who died from a cocaine overdose and people are like, wait a minute, you can overdose from cocaine? do the because again it kept up being about putting it in the Dropbox folder. Apparently I wasn't. Hey, we are not going to be each other's uh caretakers, but we are going to have to take turns. Carrying my spouse. probably where I was like it's it it's upright I'm like Matt do you see this in the folder is there a little green check mark like please help me and he was like yes does that mean it's synced in Dropbox I'm like Uh, listen to that.

And um and then I went into I I this was uh Sunday night. The the uh uh thank you everyone who listens to Factory Settings, it it it means a lot. Um I know. Stabby stab stabby stab. I I've made. taking it off the shelf and putting it into the cart and deciding, oh cool, it's on sale, I'll get some uh lemon LaCroix too. Remember the church he makes him say he abandoned his boy? I try to do myself with things uh like uh like mood tracking and datum and uh timery and drafts. But I did not. The the what's called like on the T V show?

Pence is not a nice man. Mike Pence fan art and fusion B also is like there's a running joke in our in our group. is that as I've said before on numerous things, why am I doing this? Who ha the the person doing this is making really nice updates to it on the reg, I think. What's the the art one? But your idea of it being dreamlike, I think, is spot on, but you also have uh a very uh uh not very unique, I'm sorry, a unique take on dreams specifically. Yes, yes. Like, you know, an image, a beautiful color image that went with each story. There's so much juxtaposition of impossible things. Oh do I I uh yeah I'll find some goodies for ya in a second. experience. It's just I just such iconic images like these people.

Um there's a there's like a a fashion show of bearded dragons that's very uh delightful. the the trailer for uh Alejandra Yodorovsky's nineteen seventy seventy one movie Holy Mountains You can make up things that nobody has ever said, seen, or done before. sort of, you know, political. Uh these are called uh my my my um my action word for this is Dream X. Then there was a small hotel hotel room with glass walls and doors stocked with herbal bourbons. Everyone's had a Taylor Swift dream. uh excuse me, saw four or th saw four or three famous people. Max's apartment was on the second floor. Wow. Or, you know, I think you should leave. Dumbhair, glasses, and like a windbreaker. you get um, you know, ad f ad free episodes.

stage manager but I had not uh downloaded uh the 16. Probably from Craig. Something like that. fifty people all editing a document at the same time in a collaborative way. I was always, you know, I have so many ways that I'm envious of Serenity Caldwell, and one is Serenity's threes scores. Situational ALS. is not a game that you give to a vulnerable person. Wow, this is gonna be like um IWork collaboration or whatever. I I I don't even know what I feel bad about anymore. I went to an O'Reilly conference where he was gonna give a talk, and I think we did a talk at one, probably terrible. Back in the day when I would go to O'Reilly conferences and hang out, back when Wi-Fi was first where you get an Orinoco card, I do have such a clear recollection of going to I think with Danny That did a better job of making.

with n devices and new devices and changing devices as it happens right now on my list, I need to go and fix a bunch of my today. is a collaborative real time editor designed for Mac OS ten. Uh and I what was it? Um oh and then you got the final Pam. pretty hard to fuck up Google Docs. You keep saying you don't like games and yet I uh that heard you drop a D D reference and was like, What? Dumb. It's like this is what is just they're gonna try to show off with th whatever happens. A lot of the just if you just like be did almost like a proof of concept like hey I want to make a free drawing app that we give away and you're only allowed to do all the stuff that Mac and iOS already do. You don't get to invent anything new about this.

Okay, this is incredibly it it is really fat. I don't know what size that is, but I would estimate something like say three by two or whatever that is. That's 280 would you I mean by looking at this just off the dome, are you looking on um iPad? this and you can make stuff with it. Yeah, which which is not made for that, right? Anyway, I just thought I don't I don't know if we really need to collaborate with this, but I can definitely see uses. Think about the way you do comments and tasks in the sidebar on Google Docs. Uh I I think if it became more po powerful, I could see this becoming sort of like my Twilight Arp type box. That's what stuck that's what I imprinted on was the idea that this is for collaboration, which it's really not if it's gonna be there, it's not there yet.

check marks you're gonna you're gonna fire up freeform. You know, he made that car and stuff. almost all that he's done for like two weeks and you don't hear about his other companies falling apart for lack of vision. That's the question that yeah, I mean I don't know anyone or I don't know anyone who works at any of these companies, so I have like no insight whatsoever. Um what does that mean? Um and the but but right I get a spreadsheet. or a new kind of, you know car with a battery. I mean I I buy the idea that because he's not from the car industry, he has not made the same he he sees different sorts of load bearing walls to what we need to do to make a car, in the same way that quote unquote Steve Jobs and their ability to tolerate him are why we got good stuff.

roughly approximate as a as a general rule, is roughly approximate to how much money. Still um I like I I I've seen my my uh parents who are not millionaires but uh gr are upper middle class or were uh before they had a bunch of kids. that I really wish everybody would internalize more. You know what I mean? Yeah, they'd be like, oh, it it looks enough like a boy to the big thing. You're already the I like spreadsheets guy. I uh That's the thing. think you know, to use that phrase, oh great, the Zoom ad popped up. Well how ca how can the absence of something be something you own? the easy podcast machine. Bocaster. No, it it shows me a a lot of like very scary guns or uh well I guess they're like crossbows Oh I got the uh focus right vocaster two.

Uh, but I just thought it would be extra funny. Oh, this is so the the I've used this this particular phrase a lot and I want to give double credit where do. This is not the show. And I said and I said I got rectif's uh five, but I'll be around later. At 6 a. you because I have apparently not talked to anyone and I see DBF isn't up and I will send that. uh um uh any sort of psych medication. Well, and I uh the reason I noticed that I was like, huh, this seems like I I think feel like I've gotten less And uh the pills were just in a different i instead of taking four tiny pills because the pills are the same size. You know, that that is ten milligram per pervertin. A uh allowed is a very complicated word.

Unfortunately, I don't think I can or do I think were to become a priest, would you be allowed to swear me in as a lapsed Catholic or a partial Catholic? Um but uh the especially with with bipolar one if you've never uh if you're like quote high functioning, which I don't like that term too much. But you know, like if you're a straight A kid, it's like okay. Right. do a lot, but like you kinda when you drink a lot, it impairs your judgment. Blacking out does not mean blacking out means that you seemed probably pretty fine to yourself and maybe others, but like you may not remember it. Most controlled substances are um, you know, uh we can talk about weed all day and how it's just absolutely bonkers.

Because I love iced coffee. And um one day he and Kevin Alexander went to like Win Dixie and bought a bunch of Cuban like canned iced coffee. It is similar to smoking where it was like basically if you went to a party, you were probably gonna have there's gonna be cocaine there. Like we're uh we used to you know like uh b bitch about Max being like are the files in the folder and I'm like I promise you I promise you you're in like the Andes. Uh uh. at my time tracking, uh, because I am uh very anal about time tracking, not just to be the time tracking guy, but it genuinely has helped me a lot for a long time. And I th did I was like, man, I love all of this editing I've done. the horrible stereotype of oh you are more creative when you're manic and sometimes that is true that is why there's a big difference I could have sworn and but something clicked in my head.

But I don't I was like, did I when did I pay for that? In in one of the aisle, like I'd like paste down uh there was um there was uh a cart that I left behind. And what I think one thing that's this problem is that like I I I'll like start something in drafts and I'll write like a really good one sentence or two sentence thing and paste that in and send it. This is another funny thing. Mm. That's so fucking weird. how uh where I'm like you know what no like I absolutely edit this uh I I experienced s editing a thing and sending it to Merlin and sending it to Kathy. Ma manic episodes typically happen and it they're v usually easy to spot because the person has a lot of energy and they might be doing things that are out of the ordinary.

Fort fortunately slash unfortunately, usually I would come back with something that was uh like a a film or or a piece of writing that was really good. I guess the most rew challenging and rewarding uh project I've ever managed is my own healthcare, but I don't like that that's true. Well, mmm, but he does some bad things to the dog. uh pretty much my life. Um, I think we agreed that this week we're gonna do a new thing where we go straight to the challenge. Correct. actually really look at it's so upsetting.
