Speaker AI think it depends on the podcast. One of the podcasts that I do is called The Incomprehensible, and it's a members-only version of the Agents of Smooch on The Incomparable Network, where friends, we drink and watch a movie. We play a drinking game and watch a movie.
AlexI didn't know that that was allowed on all these family-friendly networks.
Speaker AWell, that's why it's members only, because it's very much not family friendly. But that, for summary, is something tells me that I would not do well if that was a morning show.
AlexThe rest of the day doesn't seem great.
Speaker AYeah. Yeah. However, for the most part, I like to record in the mornings mainly because then it's done. It's a lot. It's because it's so because it's scheduled and has a set time. Otherwise, it floats over my head and is always present, even though I know I have, you know, three different reminders to tell me when it's going to happen. It's still always there. So I'm not able to fully concentrate on other things.
because my brain is weird. It's like if you're traveling, I like to fly first thing in the morning, so I'm not repacking my suitcase eight million times.
AlexOh, God, same. How early do you get to the airport? Oh, easily at least two hours.
Speaker AYeah. Sometimes more. The only time I cut it close, and of course, like never going to happen again, was traveling with my brother and we were running late. And then we park because he, as a retired Marine, gets free parking. So it's much easier than having to rely on somebody to take us to the airport. Except the shuttles.

AlexThe first time I met you, I was terrified of you because you were wearing a Roboism shirt, actually, because the show we do together now, Roboism, was initially co-hosted by my buddy Savannah, who is Merlin has talked about. I think he likes her more than me because she's very nice and not awkward. Anyway, her work will also be in the show notes because she's amazing.
But we met Kathy and I had never met anybody who was wearing something that I was like a part of. And I was just like, ah, ah. And you were very respectful, of course, but so kind and wonderful that it just, it creeped, it freaked me out. Because I'm used to people, or at the time, I was doing things like only for work.
And you'd be surprised, but in the gaming industry, men can get kind of weird. So I was just used to that. What? What? this is brand new information i know i i people may be shocked but and uh you know fast fast forward uh or fast over as merlin would say and now you co-host i guess we're gonna pitch again a show with me called roboism but i am curious how did you find do but like were you just in
the Merlinverse and it was like oh god oh no
Speaker AI was in the Alexverse oh no I mean oh and it's oh okay so to be fair I was a Merlin stan one of the first episodes of podcasts with that I like paid attention to the host was back to work and like I was like oh hey Merlin is a name that I can remember and so that's because I'm terrible with names and terrible with remembering them.
And so, yeah, that's a whole other. I didn't know that about you. Oh, I'm awful. I am so bad. This is why, for some reason, I keep torturing myself and play game shows on The Incomparable because they're so much fun and I really enjoy playing them. But I'm really fucking bad. will kick in but you your job is basically to make people's lives better and it's in so many facets and I don't know do you just practice people's names back in the olden days when we used to

Can you say it again? Or if it's a situation where I can't do that, I will slide in with, you know, I've always wondered, how do you spell your name?

I do that for like if I'm getting someone's contact information like for a dance mom that I need their info of like I'll hand them the phone with the contact open and I'll be like here if you can just fill this out for me that would be great. Oh my god. And then I have that right there.
AlexThat's so good. oh that and and that's a situation that i i well i'm going to steal this but it's also something that you can do on your own because my secret to this is typically ah have you met my spouse mattie and then and then he will do to fully say hi i'm maddie and the person usually reciprocates with their names.

show oh goodness gracious uh this this week's challenge was actually yours because previously we had merlin and i had editor quinn on to talk about the sims and i played the sims uh when like when I was younger, the original Sims and 2.0. But then I don't know, I just kind of fell off of
it, which is strange for because I'm so horny for video games. But you were like, okay, you need to play The Sims after that episode. And then I spent like $80 on the wrong version because it was windows and then i never played it so we are here again to talk about the sims i am concise oh god it took me like an hour and a half but i downloaded the fucking ea origin app and i'm sorry
oh it's so bad oh anyway why what's your history with the sims because um hey audience um this is obviously a leading question but if merlin listens to this he doesn't i don't know if he knows what the sims is other than it's a cool game his kid plays but he probably doesn't think it's think it's cool because he hates games oh sorry kathy i like blacked out for a second
Speaker AWhat is your history with The Sims? I have owned every single copy of every single version of every one of The Sims. It's your Pokemon. It's so, yes, it is exactly my Pokemon. That is exactly what it is because I think I have yellow for Pokemon on the Game Boy, but I never really played it because it didn't hit me the way that The Sims does.
So funnily enough, so Sims 2 came out in 2004. Damn. Oh, my God. This is also your vintage Max, like Stephen. Yes. Oh, yes. So the original Sims came out in 2000, which I played in college.
Sims 2 came out in 2004 and I bought the base game and then this expansion pack. Basically, all of the expansion packs became anniversary presents from my husband.

Speaker ABecause the new ones come out in July. And so I, that's part of why I own them all, but also because I need them all. I need to, I gotta catch them all. I gotta catch them all, Alex.
AlexAlso, you made me feel very good about myself because I was 10 when the first Sims came out. But I am, and I always, no, no, no. Okay. All right. And one of the biggest complaints with SimCity was, I want to be the people. Oh. And so EA was like, okay, and made The Sims.
And you create a character or multiple characters or some variety of characters. And I say characters, not humans, because there's more than just humans. and you get to choose hair and makeup and eyelashes and clothing and gender and whatever variation and combination you want to do and then you get to do really fun things like go to work housework or walk the dog or clean up poop or go to the bathroom or make food
AlexOh, God, it's super dark that almost every video game that I truly enjoyed was basically like, do capitalism, but fake, like Roller Coaster Tycoon, or I think it's called Game Dev Studio. it's actually a really fun ios app um but basically yes do make a city do manage this
budget do all of these things oh god there's one right uh you simulate being a youtuber i think it's like a rpg oh but as you noted noted the these are not i really don't like calling them humans because in the original version, I guess I didn't kill, but I put in obstacles that did not allow my Sims characters to survive.
For example, taking out the stairs from their pool, so they would go swimming, and then because you can edit, like you said, the environments, I would delete the stairs, and then they would get tired and drown.
Speaker ADid you ever do that? Oh, absolutely. And I can also tell you that in Sims 4, in order to drown people in the pool, you have to build a gate around it because otherwise they can just pull themselves up.

And you don't like, yes, you can absolutely feel overwhelmed and it can, but you can just decide, okay, I'm going to do X, Y, and Z. And I'm just going to, you know, make sure to keep my needs up. So go to the bathroom, eat, et cetera. Kind of like your own self, making sure that you're sleeping and eating and drinking water and that sort of stuff. And then you can do more complex things like challenges or get a job or anything like that. And it reminds me a lot of Breath of
the Wild in that there is no one true way to play. You can kind of play whatever makes you happy. And so there's people that will spend hours and hours building these extravagant homes and buildings. Like if you look and Google, you know, Sims 4 Hogwarts Castle.

Speaker Aand graciously doing a show about robots with me I also do a pseudo productivity show called Conduit with our friend Jay Miller, where we talk about productivity and life and how the combo of the two get involved. It's a brand new show over on Relay FM Switch On, and it really, it makes me super, super happy. And I'm so, so lucky to be able to do it.
Like, it gives me so much joy. And I hope it gives you joy too. And then I also do a show called Friends in Your Ears, where I talk to podcasters about their favorite podcasts on a podcast, including their journey into podcasting. And that's about as meta as you can get. That is over on the Incomparable Network. You can also hear me lose triumphantly in a wide variety of game shows or listen to me play D&D.
all sorts of basically there is plenty of Kathy content if for some reason you wanted it in your ears and I don't know why but that's okay because you're wonderful but this is why I hire out editors so I don't have to listen to myself
