No timestamps yet for this episodeThis week's challenge, Watch Blade Runner, the Final Cut. But if you're gonna quote it, p please remember it's not you, but uh the p th they. There's people going like, you know, I'm sorry, like it's like don't be a fucking idiot. is like what happens when you get a little bit more budget and a little bit more time and you get a little bit more of people putting up with wool. And you go like, oh, this is fine. It's hard to describe what it felt like to be in the theater when I saw the opening credits for seven. That's nice, they made a movie. But like but cloning was like Alice Cooper had a song called Clones, like in the late 70s. And like what Dagoba, what it was like to work on the Dago Boss set with all this like rancid water that just sat around with puppet juice in it, you know?
She but she knows her place. What are we gonna do to get this footage to make these producers happy with this happy ending? Uh I think it I think it looks it it looks terrific. the Secret of Leah saw it was very exciting. of it. the way that Midnight Run does. And you see like the way that Mac Sennet worked. I'm such an asshole. It's a lot like 3D printing. Yeah you're uh I don't want to say uh blah uh mm uh scatting? Like why are the women dancing in a window wearing hockey masks? And I'm I'm leaving out some of the sort of like behind the scenes genetic criticism stuff here that's been discussed, but unless you want to discuss it. It's like fuck. And then it's a reflection in a convex mirror.
That's really cute. Uh I keep it. it it's be because it's uninteresting in general, or if it's because I don't know how to talk about th it's probably both. Mm the proportions are t are are tiny. You can't break the film by analyzing it. Yes. runner we're good like I own I can put my hand to two copies on physical media just at my house and that's not including the DVD I bought in the 90s You guys are really worried. Like it's rolling by. Uh two people are doing a podcast about how they like Blade Runner. Th I thought there was more of him without his shirt, but I uh but there's there's more boobs in the It's more of a curiosity because he's just Indiana Jones is always like a pec tease, you know?
Well, you know what? There's been very few times, except Irminth Alberg had a good run for a little while there. And and and I'm not saying this to like sound like a like a guy who understands business or or the cowloiness of of rich people, but like seriously, like th thus has it always And but here's the thing. A well-known actor and a well-known actress show up and a well-known director directs them and it finishes on time and on budget. Well, sometimes that shit goes fucking crazy and you get Michael Chimino and Heaven's Gate. But like a sensible person is not gonna deposit their money based on where coffee's available. Right? And I'll bet they did pretty good on budget. But like when like when you sit in the theater and you or wherever at home, whatever, you watch Star Wars on HBO, like it's really it can be very, very special.
And if you're used to something like go back and rewatch all these movies that won Oscars in the 80s, like go back and watch Kramer vs. Because I and I hope you're just egg in a second you'll act like you were just egging me on instead of not understanding, which I think is a form of self-preservation. They're not obligated, but like that puts me in an awkward position because I can't tell you how often I just walked into a theater. We watched the 1979 Clint Eastwood movie Escape from Alcatraz, which, I have to say, one thing I was going for it, it was really shot at Alcatraz. And like Billy's just like, yes, that, that, that, like, recognizes all of these things. you would still go in. And then of course there's just and this is why it's like young people except it is.
that I've seen six times just because they were cheap ass movies that got shown on TV because that was part of the system. uh in a lot of cases for practical purposes don't exist. Uh no, I was trying to uh get you to mention that it is almost more miraculous that this exists. To be willfully misunderstood, you'll eventually discover this. just get the name replicant instead of Android, which totally makes sense. I th uh this isn't that important. But I remember it seeming like a huge improvement because w I don't want to belabor this, but you know, once you've watched Blade Runner more than a couple of times, the voiceover starts feeling a little clunky. Especially. What did I pay for? And you can see down from at this beautiful angle inside.
I don't know. Like you could buy re you know, like Ravel, you could buy a model of a Corsair and put it together. clarinet you might as well just uh think the clarinets don't exist. Zong Z I see C beams off the shoulder of Orion. Lord of the Rings, like some of the hand wringing and hysteria around that by the version of that movie. uh i i it absolutely um i it is different and it changes the vibe, but this made me feel completely the balls to put that in and and have uh unexplained uh photographs on this guy's piano, just like we're walking into a a house. Uh it's just Well it's I mean like yeah and the end though you're right though. Uh he wanted four yeah I think he's talking about Demsom probably.
Oh no, no, no, I'm I'm I'm the printer. understand it. Yeah. And it has a better mouthfeel than yeah, it has a better mouthfeel than a hi I remo Taffy Lewis. He's like eighty. He's been doing this for decades. March, April, May, June, July. I am I am I'm not signaling you. Because this is has not been a very uh traditional episode. I don't know, I just uh people just don't seem to get that into movies anymore. Uh just the the you know, uh before it was cool to be uh mad about r robots and and AI, just thinking about the uh consequences of uh m a bodily agency and uh w uh uh as I got older, um, you know, empathizing uh empathizing more and more with Roy and Leon because they are seen as such Well and like for me so much of it is like made up of, you know, little I don't know.
course like hey here's this idea you guys cut on action you guys want to maybe cut on action more than make movies here's an idea cut on action this is my idea Todd tell some of your people this I have this idea the movies could be better if you start cutting on action But like think about that edit where he shoots him, he spins around, and we see like the well not reverse shop, but we see Leon and now he stands up and he's got the pistol, he shoots him again, and he like fully goes through the wall, and then the cut is so sudden. And then you're on to like the next vista. Where it's like, not only is the ending different, it's it's really works at cross purposes with the rest of the movie. I w I was trying to do it backwards, but it was funny.
No, it's it's I support it even as it makes absolutely no sense. Is it a stripey situation? Whatever you people are. These changing things. And she for some reason. I always want to say freak frag, which I think we don't say anymore. I am. th and this is uh perhaps a reason why I think I'm so uniquely bad at the inc at doing the incomparable uh show, which is like I if it's something I really like a lot, or put differently, if it's something that's like a load bearing piece of media in my life I want to talk about like how I feel about it. Yeah, I mean it's all I can think about, so uh so why not? uh well uh second favorite uh third favorite yeah i was gonna s well i was gonna say person cats as an entity and uh uh apple vision pro So uh I I bit the bullet, got it on I I've never seen b Blade Runner in theater.
Holy shit. It's weird because like it doesn't matter, but like if I want to do a screenshot of something, I need to download or re-download a movie and a legal copy of the movie in order to be able to do screenshots of it. I unironically really love that you do that. I mean, which I know bothers some people, but like it's it's it it has it's not like one of those modern, like one of those James Cameron remasters where it's like everything looks smeary and And you see it from the first second that you see black background with white text. Yeah, I want to hear about what's different. Which is just beautifully typeset in Gaudi and the word replicant in red. But that instrument I think that we associate with, you know, East Asian music, uh that very chromatic sounding, like little glissando and the explosions.
me and Blade Runner, a lot of people like Blade Runner. Yeah, that makes sense. Mm-hmm. how we know that we're whole and finished and what parts of us are us. Mm-hmm. And Rachel. uh f films. talking about their victories in media. For the uninitiated, which included me mostly, what Was it just that the studio decided, you know, this this wonderful universe, we gotta explain it more. using and like it's just hard to understand. been you l look at the movie industry like over most of the decades of the movie industry like fairly inexpensive things were put out often. And it's it's as great as everybody said. Like think about it from the point of view of if in the same way that the generals who run the battles, you think about the producers who m run the movies.
And somebody goes, Well, I have this idea for a thing that I want to do and and I don't want to be too on the nose here, but like I want to show Los Angeles in 2019. f always hangs over everything because everything costs time and everything costs money and like they said in this documentary like why are you making your own chairs? Because if it's just here's your remit, Roger, you got a one weekend to make a Steve McQueen picture about people who look like mashed potatoes. It is pretty intolerable from the point of view of the financiers and producers of a picture. on this amount of budget because it needs to make this much money because it's coming out in this month. I think it's fair to say sometimes that this got made and succeeded not because of a bunch of those factors, but in spite of a bunch of those factors.
the you know, the craft services. M my favorite example of uh this that's m more current is how sh fucking Shakespeare and love, which I enjoy, beats saving private ri I did because I would just go to the movie theater at Northgate Mall and go see a movie. To look at it from every possible angle and talk about what's problematic about it and it's like, yeah, but you don't understand what it takes to get a movie made. I don't need you to appreciate this, but but forgive me for not listening to a lecture about what could have been done better about this. And Ridley Scott did it again and again and again. And like it's just that you now have the opportunity of the time. The Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Yeah. through literature and movies. And so it was just a fight. Uh, I I need to watch this documentary because I've just seen a bunch of um different DVD features from the the nineties and how it was so hard to as as like a as a like omni magazine style concept people were talking about cloning not not humans yet the cloning dolly was what in the late 80s the sheep Um, right, this is this is something that is like in Marvel, you have things like a life model decoy, right? The whole point of this thing is it doesn't know that it's I would not say it doesn't know it's a robot, I would say it can't know that it's not human. I i e even I don't know, it it does something to you because it is The guy's pretty pretty good as long as you don't unhook his breathing tube.
for well I mean initially he was brought in like he's an actor, right? of vector rectangles that shows you like where the ship is going. I love all the like just in that one scene, him playing the piano, when he sees the unicorn, just all like the old scene. clunky. You know, like uh Dashell Hammett, maybe a little bit, but like, you know, the kind of stuff if you ever read crazy fucking banana stuff like the big sleep, it's wild book. Even though I might not have had a name for this precisely at the time, I got that this was a noir. doing a voiceover, right? Yeah, I I I could see that I could see not maybe not Alan Ladd, but Bud York, I could see some of these guys going, I just said to him, like, why don't you just use that uh get a uh get a lower third that just blinks and says this is how we know he's a robot.
You had rain. Just murder. pulled di you know different kinds of things and like they built the spaceships out of in part out of like r I guess this is everybody knows this now. So why Sean Young just dresses like it's the forties and has all of the lipstick and and she just walks around on a little skirt and there's an owl. Uh a a a turtle and a tortoise. You're right. Just the fucking balls to put that in I mean obviously it didn't make it to the theatrical cut, but just the the the the How you interact, just you know, like just all these little things, the way his lights turn on, like the way the way that he does the photo enhancement stuff, like it's all thrilling. beating the crap out of stuff and making it look like it got blasted and stuff like that.
It's it's not that you know, and again, you young people wouldn't know this, but sci fi or sci fi fantasy ho whatever your term for it is, but speculative fiction. It was all like immaculate. That was another complex uh feeling of seeing this woman who I thought was very cool at at seven-year-olds and at and thinking, God, I could never be that and never want to be that. deeply heartbreaking about her. So much good on makeup. God, watching uh Rachel take her hair down. And uh I mean it's just it's so like just to like to talk about the actual movie though for a second. Mm-hmm. Still, still. Merlin, I I don't have to take uh uh a wet shit as m we Oh shit, is that our wait wait wait is this our new signal?
uh like a a bingo situation, but you uh ch said a lot of very interesting and passionate things about the industry. I am b I am I'm wondering what else you have to say about uh this week's challenge w watch Blade Runner. from last night that c did not sync via uh the notes app because I was doing it on my phone. I I thought I would have more interesting things to say about the structure of uh sci-fi newar films. Yeah, yeah. Claim that uh bodily agency. That I'm not good at articulating why I like certain pieces of art. the uh slow motion deaths uh spoilers I suppose and crashing through the um yeah people And and from w the like helicopter shots? D do you know so you've never seen the original?
Alex has changed uh its um display name to MX personality, which I think means your motocross personality. Did you s did you just misgender yourself? Um what you mean did I did I put he or like her somewhere? Ooh, I like that. I would have to be, because they is they is plural. But it makes it worse. like already something a lot of people have said over a long period of time or that are just very would be very difficult for me to like get across. Definitely now one or two because I had not seen the final cut. Yeah, and that has was just the one on iTunes, and y you sent me an incredible copy of it, but But the um for example that so this is weird though like I when I download the ones I've downloaded or re-downloaded I've got a downloaded copy at the office I got downloaded copy at home Um, but, you know, to just set aside for a moment the the topic of uh you know, oh gosh, you really you're you know, over oversharpened.
as the as you see Los Angeles and all the little fires. And like, and then and then and like you see, you know, and it's like okay, that for me is like why I like movies. and sense of sense of uh existential integrity, which seems like an an issue. the lens of the camera, the initial camera they were shooting on, in order to just create a reflection in the replicant. is just basically all the DVD extras put into one movie. Like all like all sorry, I'm talking down to people. It's talking to all the money guys and the producers. So this is what we're talking about, yes? And it's funny because it comes up again and again and again. That's a new character I call Professor Used to Be, where where I I give you some kind of a fact about the past that nobody fucking cares about, and often refuses to believe existed.
believe, hear, accept, and integrate the parts of it that comport with your values. pound for pound, you know, career in Hollywood. Let's call the usual suspects. Their point of view is like this isn't a a money investment. It's not helping their understanding of the point that I'm about to make, which is there weren't that many movies that looked and felt like this when I was 14, 15 years old. I didn't see Ellie in the in the original theater run. Like ordinary people's fine. For best. It's crazy that Midnight Run ever got made. Like what the fuck is this? Merlin was sitting there making uh Alex noises of uh mm mm and I I was expecting it. Yeah. because uh he wanted that uh replicant i in red uh uh uh at the beginning crawl and just immediately it I forget where where you can find these, but you can see there's there is a scene that was cut out, probably advisably, where Deckard visits um visits him in the hospital.
flight path portrayed as a succession of rectangles that show you where your craft is gonna going to be in space. What a great like not low budget, but like what a great way to do something with the tech that you could have. Anyways. you c I you instantly get when a when a hard boiled detective is talking like this, that she had legs that went from there to other places and a hat and you know that like that way of doing a voiceover. fifteen, twenty years ago. was the first time I'd also seen uh uh practical effects in in that the futuristic uh objects were like the umbrella. We look down though, and I think it's done with mats, but then you also see one of the little cars go by, and there's a really cool lens flare.
I mean it's wild. I think this is done with a combination of several things, but it's when Deckard, he's like shivering, he's got the ta he's got wrapped the blanket around himself and he goes out on his little balcony. No, but just like what they had like the way the designers would come in and one guy's like, you know, one of the the set guys is like, well, the the set designers were were painters and the painters were designers and the practical people like all this we all like had to like Like I I I I ca often think that the, you know, final uh cuts of various movies or things like the the remastered The idea. the ty i the interior of uh the t Tyrell building and the you know the the like watery um explanation for why that is on the wall.
I I how they got a horse with a horn on its head to run toward the camera. Oh fuck she's a printer lady. her becoming more fragile. Uh uh again, just the the color difference and I think there's of just a few Is that a photo of her as a little girl with her mom? Is this and she like no snake and then it's like okay, this these uh strippers have uh snakes, so m because I'm an amazing I am I am Blade Runner and that's how I that's how uh he's not Blade Runner, he's there from the union. Ooh, played by High Pike. too is uh I I don't want to say character Yeah, it is it is characteristic. Oh. age that's crazy. He was Lopan and he was gong gong. The no I don't I don't um what's our new wait wait I've not oh dear no I'm really fucking it up I don't I what what is the so you don't have to take a wet shit so you're not signaling me I won't uh cast stones at his unbroken paper spines of the paperback.
have feelings about movie. the the just the editing when Leon shoots him and he does there's something very improbable that happens which she shoots him didn't see it like I thought that that was the only part that had a voiceover, so I had only seen it in the context of the. And so at one point, I guess all the producer types were like, yeah, how about instead yeah, how about instead he's totally everybody's human and they just drive away and everything's fine? Oh, oh I don't like that. Have you seen the film Motocrossed? Mmm, oh goodness gracious. My my flag is up. So it's a metaphorical flag. The the challenge this week was to watch Blade Runner, the final cut. concern at all. Why? It's um in a case of something like this, it's you know, it's just it's difficult for me to talk about this in a meaningful way without saying things that aren't very Um but anyway, um Oh real real quick.
image of something of Bryant in his office saying, I need the old Blade Runner. Have is it just that I've never seen this on a good enough display before? is that all that stuff coming together is before we even learn what Douglas Trumbull did with like the way they shot the the flames, which is bananas. This is our universe. The L has the eyes too. The the the the was it. Like, why can't you just go buy chairs at Levitz or something like that? You don't build all of this stuff and you don't do as many takes as somebody like Ridley Scott did. But for somebody to produce a Hollywood picture that represents the vision that they have in mind. people are more cynical uh about this. that a lot of people know his name now, but like he is the mind behind a lot of ideas that reached a m uh something like a mainstream.
I don't know every little click of the pupil like oh my god. But you know, basically to do sides during rehearsals or during auditions, right? It does let's just I'm gonna put this in a very kind way. People on bicycles. Um they had this set, but it was just to cut a long story short, you do not need to watch this entire documentary like I did. I don't w I don't wanna I don't wanna learn any new things of currently unknown value that people might make fun of. There's no like reason for it to look like that. Like, but you see, like she's so put together. And I think it's just she's so she's such a young actor and she had a very tough time in this movie. Yes, that was at least my understanding.
God love the ape uh every single change is beautiful. mm but i trapping someone in a world where they have uh uh even if they have a sense of self, it can be ripped away at any moment and taking away Mm-hmm. You know, if if if it ain't broke, don't fix it, you know? And all I can say is I really like it for stuff for stuff I like. Oh boy. I don't sidebar, I don't think people understand how much you care because subtitles too Yeah. It's like that just that that culmination of like, okay, you've set up this story for me. But like when they had to shoot the like they had the like the flames coming out of the like the towers, those are each separate mat shots they had to match. And very human issues that are, as they say, more relevant than ever, but also just it does seem kind of up your alley about not just robots, but also like sense of self.
Chests are all unique. Because they they live in a different era and things seem different now. You put out a movie. Oh my god, I'm sorry. Because they thought that you look at somebody like uh the great late late great Roger Corman, who never lost money on a movie. It was there was something very special about walking into a miraculous movie like Superman, Raiders of the Lost Ark. Oh fun. You know, and also just mentioned gently in passing, when you make fun of people who have odd hobbies with strange technology that seems to be going nowhere, sometimes you produce a guy who knows when a bulbous piece of Ravel would be useful for Blade Runner. different and the sense of unreality was like just turned up to a ten.
the uh all of I it's hard to say that everything is subtle. What could be more human than the moment you realize you're not human? It's uh it's a very it continues to be a very interesting idea. the better uh a tortoise or a turtle is. Oh, he really has been. what what compulsive uh questions would you like me to ask you that I haven't yet? Talk about talk about trauma. Yeah, he could he could lift four hundred pound loads all day long. with a r with a pistol and his chair spins around and then he like flies through a wall and then the scene's over and you've moved on to something else. After Alien, uh I I don't think they were pals or anything, but but supposedly Stanley Kubrick had admired Alien and thought really Scott was a very interesting guy.
And he's like, okay, I guess that's one option we could do. Oh good movie but I have not ever put it on anything because it uh I well I don't put on a riffs of what you perceive as someone always making the same joke No. As somebody who's such a pill about using words in a way that is sensible to other people, that I'm bringing down from 10 to 90% of the population. I I I just got the one that was on iTunes because you put it in the spatial video. You you see that part in the documentary? For kids and I don't mean that in a derogatory way, but really just like here you're in this world now and uh it was uh exactly covered. like an edit. And he gets the like Orson Wells levels of like what the fuck is this?
But it you d it's it's a business. And they need to be. something that somehow broke free of all the tethers of of finance and art to to make something that really felt very, very different. Because it wa was based off of a previous franchise, which was uh Philip K. that is pretty similar to one of the s the scenes in the book and I uh oh I'm I get why they cut it out but it's still Oh, we laughed. Just looking over your uh LinkedIn real quick. self you have to like re relitigate all this stuff about your life and just feel like you've been punked by life I don't think she knows. It feels I'm like it feels uh homophobic some or not homophobic, but this this feels just the gayest Harris and Ford has uh Ford has ever been, and yet he's still creepily h hitting on her.
Yeah, it's it's pr let me go look. don't want to make people mad and I'm sure that that is also not a way that he thinks people should live but yeah. But I got so caught up in this universe. A cynical person would say the producers wanted a happy ending. This woman's interviewed who went out to have to do this shot and they're like, oh, they're going out and it's all misty and there's shit. No on noodles noodles. I do that. Um and if it's something again in the case of something like uh a recent thing, Shogun, it's like well partly it's that like it I I get more from it, but that's a fancy way of saying like I understand what's happening more than I did the first time. The eyes like I know that it's very much the eyes.
about what you would think about the automaton video. That's the way you think of this as a producer. I d uh I loved I d not love. Robot or Android. Which br brings up some very interesting ideas. That's bad. This is so similar to like a like a Raymond Chandler uh you know, like a big sleep or um Uh there we go. Just just seeing the different color. 'Cause you know, and again again, like, you know, there's that word I first heard about associated with Star Wars, kit bashing, where like we didn't want this to look like Star Trek. Shane Shane Dillis is just uh You see a braid runner. This is and you know at what coupe ras stage are you in when you realize the spiders from your memory aren't real?
I I uh watched the scene of her looking at the photos three uh th three times actually la last night because You don't need to explain it to me, but I just want to confess. The the um just scale I know and I was in answer to your query Mm mm. I'm sorry. I'm the one who's after you people. Uh it's got the big the background images, the like advertising with the Japanese lady on it. Yep. When I saw this for the first time when I was a kid, it it was one of my like R-rated movies Oh yeah, and I I love a lot of his uh stuff, but I mean uh pr producers also l loved him because of that. No knowing scales is is a big d deal in knowing which uh the difference between a toad and a oh no, that's the book.
Uh oh yes, right. Why is that funny? I just turned myself down because there was so much bleed, and man, I apologize I don't know, I I'm actually not touchy about this, uh, I don't think, of all the things I'm touchy about, but like, just don't worry, I've bought a lot of copies of Blade. Which I think touches on our worlds if you sit with that phrase that I just put out there for a minute, okay, you're a cop and you're gonna show me I'm not as human as you are. And and uh the the first time I uh saw a woman uncomfortable in her what I now kinda if see as femininity, but her at that time like her humanity I I I I talked to Jerry Jewenstein about this and I'd secured a bond that would enable me to buy the right.
Well th they were trying to just uh clone full. It's pretty clunky. Do you know do you know what a Yoda smells like? It's just it's so neat. I mean of course I could talk all day about this. Yes. Oh, I missed it. No, no, I uh or or yes. Imagine, you know, a li a little kid seeing this woman come out with pristine makeup and and of course it's not real. That wasn't that funny. I I still don't completely understand what's happening with the reflection and the snake thing, and I still don't really. Which I don't think he's capable of, because he doesn't think of life that way. Uh apparently a compulsion. Before this challenge, I would have said that Blade Runner is in my top five side. I started watching it.
Or the one I bought for Apple TV. Yes, okay. Which was turned into a a novel because the movie was somewhat successful. That's I mean, I'm not sure. I'm just saying. And you could tell, like, it's just really does feel like Harrison Ford's got a gun to his head. And you just see she's so she's so vulnerable in the way that anybody would be. You know, you you made a remark at the beginning. There's so many shitty movies, all this terrible like like Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder movies, Blackbeard's Ghost, whatever it was, I just fucking roll into the theater and see whatever movie was playing. Not title but still good. Alex, Alex, he has 462. Oh, their hug. What what are you trying to do right now?
Yeah, yeah, yeah. And that's how they ended Blade Runner. So you probably saw the director's cut, I'm guessing. People were real real real dumb also that then at the time, even would have just pierced the consciousness and just Ridley Scott was like, no, we're not, we can't do Android automaton or robot. Everything has been said about this movie that can be pr probably, but just the unicorn scene alone. Enhance, enhance, enhance. He he's old as a yes. I knew it, you asked. I'm gonna do a screen grab of this and I know what they're really worried about is that you're gonna like play the movie and record it and then distribute it and make seven dollars off of it. Right? Most of the movies I saw coming up that were put out when I was coming up were what was called a drama, which is like a man and a woman argue.
There's no such thing as a clarinet. And like, yes, Rachel, could you, you know, blah blah. It was a different time. You got that weird Green Island Lad tree. You know, oh yeah, look at that, that's funny. It makes me want to throw up thinking about all the work. And when they so what was the name of the shoot, the name of that building in LA um where he lives? They had to do this stuff with the craziest lighting stuff to produce a lens flare from a space car on a with b with a matte painting behind it. I love him so much. Yeah. They finally put cork on the floor because it made it easier to clean up. Uh uh That's not funny. Again, like I I just it's nice to hear, but like, I don't know. It did uh indeed probably shape how I saw a lot of uh the world and uh I liked it because it had Han Solo in it.
Because on the face of it, it is quote an action movie. You had smoke. Yeah, I I'm now the same joke maker. But the the all I was gonna say was the um why I feel uniquely bad at talking about things I like a lot. In terms of the like, well, you know, you got me. I've already dragged this down. But put it up against everything else. It was very much a stupid thing. Like that the the movie I think had already been sort of constructed. But like just look at the fucking chair. I'm learning and growing. Melan Void would have been better. Um, well, I'm obviously immediately blow it way out of proportion to start with. Don't I okay? You know what I'm saying? Is that an electric uniform? And I I always heard just how miserable this was for everybody, especially Sean Young.
And this very lived-in world is it's thrilling to see how there's still like annoyances and weirdness and grossness and like grittiness. But the reason the robots went to Tybrails they didn't want to die. It's not uh it's not transatlantic. Mm-hmm. No. It's good. And that was a b a barrier to entry of like, oh, we bought these movie we we bought the rights to this book and it was fairly expensive because Philip K. He brings something. That's their job. Like think about it's just a test of whether I'm a replicant or whether I'm a lesbian, Mr. Hello Merlin. I always add the article and I sound like it's it sounds like it should be tears in though, right? I'm like, wait, wait, wait. And yeah, and just like a lot of the effects in this are are are pretty amazing.
Mm-hmm. So they decided that this story was too confusing and by the time basically that they had And and let me let me just put put a a point on this pencil, which is the movies that I grew up with. I bet they probably did okay on budget on a lot of those. Jesus fucking Christ. Yeah. He was born five months before my dad, 1929. I don't think that's it. Him talking over Roy Batty's thing at the end is like was pretty frustrating. Like this is this is uh ever thus, it's always been like this. That we now now are just table stakes for sci-fi. Like first she actually snaps like a twig where I'm talking about the spiders where it's like oh fuck. I I uh cost any major that Tyrell was ye reusing photos between replicants?
Oh, good name. That's the thing. Um or whatever I'm sorry, m may maybe maybe the um maybe it's whatever you people is. That they shot on 35 millimeter and then they shot, I guess, the equivalent of like a projection of it to like upscale it. I bet their biggest budget things were like, you know, probably, I mean, once you paid the top line talent, the directors. They talked to in this uh documentary and we're talking I'm talking more about the documentary than the movie because a lot of people have talked about the movie. Oh yeah. Well, that includes video games, animation, gong gong. W what what accent is he supposed to have, Mr. This is j don't don't let the others in. It's w why are media challenges so frequently death?
Um no but because like for me like I don't know I don't the one reason media challenges or death is He's so practical about this though. They just they just really just like I want it to look like that and they were like, What's it supposed to be? He's E. And I don't think we use that word anymore. Mm-hmm. Yes. It's not my it's not I I want you to do the thing you need to do, but the only reason I give one flying fuck about this director's quote unquote vision is I I need them to land this. Like I I just it's it's it's just still I like that L I like that I the idea of that, but the way that it's done comes off, you know I don't mmm It's a read instrument for mouth organ. Have you seen the uh I guess you wouldn't have, but on the off chance A combination of a smearing oversharp.
And the first time I saw a sci fi movie that wasn't the Media's death. It's not that good. He's like, we did everything that we could to make this look good being shot. Says here you were uh trying to get this right. What does that mean? You know, it's it's the good in seven year old Alex was like, oh the bad boy is yeah. It's just spectacular. Do you know the original ending? I I sort of added it or makes it sadder and lonelier, you mean? Yeah, chicken, chicken problem. Some people have made a sport of hating Blade Runner because it's a thing. Another miraculous movie that somehow got made. Yeah. It's okay if you were criticizing me, but were you criticizing me? I don't enjoy chrome. I was too young.
I'm signaling that um I want to ask you if you would like a signal. No, no, I'm sorry. We'll we'll get working on it. B. I know and a as you should. Oh my god. I lo I love I love all the parts of these things that are like So so you watch some of that documentary, but not not not obviously all of it, right? Their job is to be dumb about this and to act like all these things from the past are irrelevant and that they can just never really understand because it was such a different time and who cares anyway. Or like there's that line I heard from the ad or whatever. Um Do you know about that guy? That was only like a couple years after this. I think it's other things probably. Your opening statement.
And honestly, I watched a uh Thalberg documentary a few weeks ago that, you know, the most arguably the most successful He was picky about his w well, he was also well, I mean, where do you begin with Philip K. Did you just use the S phrase? Oh mm. Farnum on Deadwood. He looks like he's in a kabuki play. H Y High Pike. Oh yeah, finally, oh no, it's by my own petard. The uh uh do you know how I I didn't know this un until yesterday, but they put they they put little lights underneath Okay. You can't even buy the shitty movies that used to exist. Like, no, it knows it's a robot. It's it's pretty nuts. Oh God. Yeah, yeah. That guy? Ah, oh, took uh took and talk about taking and turning. It's twenty nineteen.
Uh uh I I think this is also because I uh read the book last reread the book last week and uh now I'm like um it it's not that. Skin jobs. But I had never uh seen things. Rachel. And if you've ever seen DVD commentaries, it's got stuff about the writing. I mean the only reason for what I mean I think if they're reflexively cynical about it, it's not really helping. No, alright. How they had to shoot it. And but it's it's also like the you just you you will not see a movie like this anymore. Sometimes like Napoleon, not so great. Are you guys talking about the movie Blade Runner? I'm just gonna say I think the movie does fine without the voiceover. That's not funny. How old is he? Let's see. That was my pole dancer name, you know, Montana Sky footage.
Right? Oh uh no, it's probably me. I did, yes. Wow. Yes. The chair they made. What do you think? No, no. I think uh Syracusa should uh r read the The Body Keeps the Score. And he's like, Yeah, I do. Oh, mmm, you took the hat off. But uh yeah, it's just it's I end up just being either like I problem problematize things, I wish were better. All right, proceed. But I mean honestly, I'm not trying to correct the idea. Oh just I I I print things. Really? And so we need to add a voice over to this. And then you look back at it and you're like, and you use every conceivable lens and prism and telescope and microscope. Who plays those? She's so like, she's like somebody who would work for Trump. How many questions?
I have my favorite thing in the world sitting next to me. You got the like all the stuff in the credits. Like, which also it is kind of funny that all the people who wanted a voiceover were those guys. I mean, it's probably also nostalgia, but yeah, the r I mean r ro robot uh robots. Uh that depends. But they're very good. Do you know about him? So you change your name now, I gotta change my name. Did you want to open a water or anything while you're here? I'm sorry. See how you can see in the room? I said that before this I would have said it's in my top five. It's just it's so popping. It was it was a fight for every change and uh That's what I think a lot of people think. He's Lopan and Big Trump in Little China.
It was funny. Yeah, so there's a there's a documentary about this called Dangerous Days that's if you take it as a movie, it's three hours long, but I think what it is So I mean I all I know is I can just repeat what I've heard, but but Another level it's like a you know a drama for grown-ups. It was like, it was like it. And well and I su I suppose you know that that it just like Mad Max, right? Oh, she's bringing the body. But uh because animals are nearly extinct Which sounds both homophobic and racist. Okay. Sounds great. You fuckers, the first time you you sit in the theater and watch um And they brought him in to do sides, especially with Rachel's, to like test out like uh not a chemistry test obviously, but you know what I mean?
Ridley Scott is like, okay, we've got this set, which is totally like a New York City set. They would put the pieces together out of like go, oh that piece could be from this. Just uh well I I guess we could just say cynically a production design, but like think about like the elevator. And this is a very same similarly, this is a very another way to put it, this is a very lived in world. Oh no well okay so there's somebody with the has their hand, they're like their fist, they're like faces on their fist over on like the left as we look at it. Right, right. It's not without my um, you know, I I I I understand what they were going for with I didn't ask a qu I did not ask a question. Or I'm just gonna ask uh I I watched it t twice last night and And just like, oh, okay.
Um I didn't see this. It's it's crazy that Mad Max ever got. Um What's not funny? No, oh, oh, challenge, challenge, challenge. This is about Blade Runner. Like things used to be different. But generally speaking, every movie studio is almost falling apart all the time. He's born in 1929. Tell me if it is a stripe or a shape situation. It's sort of like where like it or another way to put it in terms of my personal freak flag, I cannot say that word, that phrase. Like it's Happy New Year 2004. Right? But like if you're somebody who is like and I I'm not talking about like some twisted genius or like again, Coppola on apocalypse now. You would never like you know Capital One likes to talk about their coffee bar at the bank.
Being willfully misunderstood is very frustrating and it there is no defense, there's no saving throw against willful misunderstanding. It says Tyrell on it. I love I agree with you though, Alex. I think he's over ninety. Or you get, you know, Francis Coppola and One from the Heart. What did I'm uh what what did what did ordinary people cost? It it's really that was very illuminating when I uh found out about the that. Like there's just all these things to this. What's the name of that goddamn building? That's what they do. Um yeah, I don't know. I got it. I tend to do that. No, it looks spectacular. Like Kramer versus Kramer, it's a bunch of professional actors on a set talking to each other How did you get this number?
You will be. How about Rachel's hair? That was given to him by um what what's his name? There was almost like not an outline, but it it it seems like there should have been an outline, but we just jumbled it up and then did a little like um Y they yes. Two. Like this touches on a lot of um I don't know a lot of ish philosophical It's not show friend, it's show business. But you also have the fact that like, well, you know what? It's really cool. But you know, I do enjoy you. I support it. Uh so not always So they they is changing They is changing things. Like, how do you say to somebody, like, watching that still gives me shivers? My one of the most successful people was the the great Irving Thalberg, who I think died at 37 and had done so much in his short amount of time.
JF Sebastian. They ate they they they did a pretty good job on his makeup though. Yeah, I I I don't know. He's like, Do you want it? A literal driving off into the sunset ending. Um, he contacted Steele and Kubrick and said, Do you have any leftover footage from The Shining? What f a flag? Bleep oop. It's so fucking fun. Oh, I know, me too. Mm-hmm. Says here you were a printer for Donald Trump Trump. Someday when we do a podcast episode about the nineteen eighty two movie Blade Runner, someday, I will confess to you that I still don't completely understand what's happening in the scene where he's enhancing the photo. I love the name Taffy Lewis. P-Y-K-E. Like I can't do a screen grab of that on Apple TV.
Well, I I know that and I I'm intrigued in the same way that I was intrigued Me, I should watch. Mmm Bryant? And then somehow the camera sees around a corner into a bathroom. Yeah. I uh it was a little bit a little bit funny. And I I don't want to like I I'm fine with analyzing things. I'm drowning in everything everywhere all at once, physical and digital copies at the moment. No. And it's one of the word clunky is far too shallow. You had not seen it with voiceover, but you had seen the the the pretty good director's cut that came out in the late nineties. Can you see the guy standing in the room? There's like something like 17 different mat shots just in that where they had to shoot the explosions of this is I'm getting way over way ahead of ourselves.
Clone was a word that was pretty hot at the time. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And then when she's in the elevator and comes to the house, you can feel how she's breaking. Are you saying oh it's because we're not good at this? And it's so long story short, finally, uh Ridley Scott's like, ugh. No, I I got a lot of problems here. But you know, it's just I watched it again last are we doing the challenge now? But like he was he was swinging at the fences and doing speed a pretty long time before that. What what what I don't understand why we're doing this. Oh, thank you. No, but I won't. Just like I don't know. Okay, two with noodles. Um see see it's confusing now. Well my overarching th thing was just the initial wait, wait, wait.
I figured that was something. There's just something we're talking about a million different things. And uh the idea w is what I would have said at most like a hundred and forty. We don't say that anymore. I appreciate that. And um uh you learn a lot about the the history of like, you know, the m-there's you know all the history parts. And you know what happened in the 80s? If you reject all the other, not you, but in the world. Those are those are not the same thing. I either don't finish a movie or mm you know I I do stuff like that all the time. Yes. It looks so cool. That's fine. Because that's what people used to do. Oh God. And they're like, ah, you know, I think we might have uh I think we might have a spot for you.
Just I I I love it. I'm I print I'm I'm a printer. Yeah, yeah. What does MX mean? I'm in this world. He was hired as to be to do sides Oh my god, do you love Rachel's huge hair? But um me being very emotional and really enjoying this movie and God every High Pike. Wow. It's also it's very much it it's I have of all of my disabilities, um I I can I can cop HD very quickly. There were as the usual like missing scenes and stuff. I uh wasn't egging you on. I think I first saw that. Harrison Ford was not very nice to her. And he's like, Yeah, yeah, I do. And and I just want to say and and my my opening statement is I I I'm not mad about this. But but like that that the only reason this is why media is death for me is like I can't tell you about what It has to know that it's a robot.
You could have uh yes, you could have taken the joke joked out though. She's just called the printer. No, he brings he brings something a little different within the constraints of like inscrutable Asian man. No, I'm trying to find the notes I wrote I don't it doesn't matter to me. Oh my god. Like cloning was this this was this sort of like the way we think about AI now, like where people were like, oh my god, what's gonna happen when you can clone people? I mean it's a big thing. I'm not supposed to get emotional on this show anymore. He just wants to be right, which is understandable. My pronouns are null and no. And I I if that sounds cynical, well get ready. So what young people are you uh around do you do people really think like I I feel like Good uh shots of applying makeup as well.
Really? How have you not depend depends on depends on what Is that the movie where they refer to synthetic humans as skin jobs? I love this world. He's got some questions for her. My God. This is Do by Friday, a weekly challenge podcast with Alex Cox and Merlin Mann. And then just assume it is your fault. Probably spectacular. I really should watch. Hi Pike is Taffy Lewis. I won't because I realize I I didn't follow the outline. Thank you. There's a version I I had put up on my synology and then did you buy a different one, you're saying, or you just watch this one on a TV? It really every every the th it's spectacularly clear. So that that's the part that I think and also just that like, you know, the when I say media is death then there's the boring chicken problem part, which is like, oh yeah, gosh.
But it's a really different experience from As opposed to what? But you know, like like you so like, okay, all right. You will be. And so and being able like he he says like what kind of fish I just have very strong feelings about them and then make Tina Belcher noises. It's just it's uh see now it seems not very fun. Um would you like us to do that? Yeah, I I assume, I hope that there are other people who just don't say they like it and do. I guess now you're you're gonna prove to me that I'm not I'm not as human as you are. So they brought Harrison Ford back in and uh w absolutely one of the best parts of that documentary is hearing outtakes where he's actually in the booth. Kramer. Dennis Gephardt and I are sitting there in the theater watching and that the credits start and you're like, I've never seen anything like this.
How fucking cool is every single thing in this? Well, if you ever hear about the making of ESB I my freak flag is f full flown as much as it's permitted to Uh oh no. That's like in Star Wars when they get into the into the prison block. I think he should start by being uh well I mean you know what? Uh no, this isn't a question. No. And if they want to shoot a scene in New York, they go to the New York soundstage at Universal or wherever. Why would you want 'em? Did you ever see that movie LA Plays Itself? Mm-hmm mm. The first time seeing What a great name. And is still I I uh everything I've seen with him There's a funny, there's a funny, I think it did he get uh was it the Walk of Fame? If I am I I You see the fan turning?
And You're not frowning? But I i I w I was uh blow away, as they say. Is he a robot? It's like I don't know, it's just how I want it to look, and it's fucking great. Jesus Christ, this guy was born. So the woman, there's two people that went out to shoot this. Merlin man, how are you today? Robot, absolutely robot or Android, sure. It was I read an oral history of the making of this movie. You get that, then you get the scroll. But like when you first hear that Van Vangelis um I don't know what the instrument is. Scott James Hong. How do you say it? I uh I I I opened it. I've finally been discovered. I need to start this whole thing over, but They're used to something where Well you know what all of those things happened?
Well, it looks like it. Like it's, or uh better put, ordinary people. You'd walk in and you'd see a movie. There's so many movies where it's like. Right? Well do you think those umbrellas with the lights on them? But like they had to like clean it up every night because it had to be used as a regular building during the day. Will was that like offset printing or w were you doing like four color? That's a very deeply human moment. I think that's a phrase I just made up. Ridley Scott sounds like a you know, pretty pretty tough he knows what he wants. I have a story, but I didn't s I don't think I saw this in the theater on the first run. That's fun. I uh What a wonderful off-world. I'm I'm talking about the the movie because I've have seen many feature as well.
Yeah. I don't know uh again Deckard. He has 462 acting credits on IMDB. He's like, Well, just don't use any of the stuff that like looks like the shining, but yeah, I'll just I'll send it over. Like so many great like early 80s, late 70s, early 80s movies, I'm in this little world. You go to the bank because the bank makes you money and you can trust the bank and they won't, you know, lose your money. All the stuff that I would see over and over and over on VHS at the rental store in the eighties, like nobody's seen any of those movies and they've Which isn't in the director's cut, so that was the first time I'd ever seen the unicorn. He's also Larry from Larry, Daryl and Daryl on the New Heart show.
And just to be the 9,000th person to say this, What are we doing right now? Am I not seeing? Anyway, um but the what's interesting is the one that's on the at least for me, the one that's on the ITunes store, I assume is the one you've got final cut. It was like the earth moved. I love this world. That one I didn't get that mm goo. And you have said that media challenges are death. I th and Yeah, yeah. It's got stuff about the conception. Like, basically since movies started as an industry, the entire industry's been falling apart. As opposed to fucking everything else. Cloning as an idea had become pretty hot in the 70s. It should be blinking, but like in a classic way. Oh, that's very good.
Does it look which is, I mean, also true, but the color grading, huh? Um but but let me let me the let me add something that might be useful for my my POV, um, which is of course, you know But it threads a needle. What probably like eight million dollars maybe? Um my kid works on Alcatraz and we've been watching Alcatraz things. Um, but like the way she's so she's so confident and so so self-possessed and like It's pretty You made a movie, you you made every single nickel out of it, every way you could, and it just got rerun for years. No But like there's something just so Here's his here's his four most well known his three most well-known roles, according to IMDB, are uh he's Mr. Because I don't have anything very interesting Uh see he I I bet he wouldn't break the spine of um Thank you.
Uh no I um me I'm saying m me this is why I'm not on the uh incomparable Batty? And like you make a movie, you put it out, and you make money. It's pretty much Or maybe not, I mean yes, a noir, but also saliently just an American detective story. It's it I like I I I'll I'll watch and be like, yes, I s I see Yeah, yeah. That's not what I'm saying. It might have been in Star Wars, but I think I think Alien I feel like was the first place where I was like, you're seeing a future flight plat. I if I knew this I forgot it. Is he one of the elevators? Uh uh I I uh say it mix Uh is it a good no it's not a good idea? But like I don't have that much to add to this. The there's never no shirt. And then when he went back to Paramount.
No, no. Like she's so she's confident, she's smart. Except she's not blonde. Oh um dig dog challenge. Um I see. What's wrong with all these young people? But like for everybody, the shooting in the rain stuff was just The who who is this a bit? Mm nope nope nope. No, seriously, have you uh on like uh we're doing I'm doing a bit uh but have you ever looked at his IMDB credits? Okay. Skinners. I told you to tell me. I I hadn't seen the theatrical release, which you sent me. We're going to have Han Solo just do a voiceover of everything he he thinks. You know, this is kind of the whole basis of blank check, the TV the the uh podcast in some ways. Even they don't say it, they don't call themselves that.
I I mean I maybe some of that is stuck in the right. But like there's a point where he's like, so he's like, so so what do you do? The well- Holy shit. Um top of it, right? Uh in the uh in the documentary they talk to James Hong. Yeah, I mean that still is going into a voice acting booth or do Jesus You you you're that into it? Oh dang it, I did it wrong. He say you braid runner I have previously I think referred this I know I have referred to this as what I call the gimme, which is like hey, you know, this is just a gimm. If he's a robot then this proves it. But definitely him, but really Rachel. And he goes, all right. It looks like he never lost money on a movie, right? It's miraculous that it exists at all.
Do you know about the guy in that scene? I'm afraid of saying something racist again. Taffy Taffy Lewis. Oh, I no I've said plenty. Mmm Alex changed uh sucking instrument. You say, Oh, I saw an ad for that, or I saw a poster for that, even in the late 70s. And like you can just feel This is the problem. It's just I I try. Um, and Well like by the time the movie was was I'm not trying to say that, except that like you will not understand history if you only listen to the part of uh if you only Like in if especially if you're trying to honor the the laws, right? I love his square glass. They call her the printer. No, I'm genuinely You want to talk about it now? I just do little snappies of the t T V like a you know like a Yeah but then you can see a reflection and people say you need you need different light bulbs.
You know, like in like in 2001, you know that was all like hand animated, right? I know of a piece in this one Ravel set that we could use for that. I love his love his apartment. This is the world. Which is on the beta. This would be a great YouTube essay. And like a lot of Right. I'll Right. No, that's a sentence. Oh, really? The Void Kampf. Oh, oh yeah, I'm the problem. Of course it's got one of my favorite parts. . That's what it was. But existential integrity, like how I I'll only learn things that used to be useful. It does it so exquisitely. Los Angeles Plays Itself. And like how they got those lens flares in 1981 is And then read it. But like it just the way all these little pieces come together.
Merlin, tell me what your freak flag would look like. It's so fucking good. Why would I want to get good at something other people don't understand? It's um This is why we're not on the incomparable, because it just Um yeah, I I I like it a lot and um I I'm gonna have to release a lot of Apple notes apologies. First of all, a freak flag is a is it's an it's a metaphor Well uh And we have a lot of constraints to that. It makes absolutely no sense. Like, do you know the story of the footage? It's it's tears in rain. Okay. What I'm saying is that in re in retrospect you can look back and go, Well, yeah, yeah, I I guess that was pretty good. God, I love Harrison Ford's pressy character. I try. Wow.
I watched m for the first time ever, I watched Midnight Run the other night. And that's the movie. All of those things were able to happen because they thought you were bankable. I I was j trying to give you a little bit of a good idea. Isn't that cool? Just practical But like what they did to add those like there's this that wonderful shot Just get into the world. I've been admonished to follow the outline and I I didn't do it this week and I owe you an amends. I wanted the robots to be alive. It's incredible. A movie that threads the needle. It used to even be kind of way worse if you've never seen Chaplin. I'm sorry, it might have been a full novel. But like sci fi, like old like Leslie Leslie Nielsen in a sci fi movie in the fifties, everything looked like the Jets sit.
Uh let it begin with me. Just always always assume always assume. Dick, who was a really big deal. Out of like old Ravel. Please play your mouth organ. I don't know There's nothing wrong with the young people. Oh, damn it. You guys, there's so many movies you will never even know existed. But like the whole point of the Nexus 6 is more human than human. It was like a New York City set. Oh no, no, no. I think he should be a better person. Whereas the downloaded ones, I don't know why I'm telling you this, are a little bit noisier, but I think I think that's a very good one. There's just uh uh like most of the buttons undone. Dick? Like, no, no, everything's fine, everything's fine, negative, negative.
They cut on action. But yeah, but like for me to be able to share like a good looking And like I I love that kind of like like just old old guys Yeah. This guy was born. 'Cause has that part of speech changed too? I don't think that hurts You're always asking questions. Well and it's also I mean the one that's the like It's like when you have to let go of your sense of Why don't you you do you have more things you'd like to share about it? I mean, I I I don't want to be right or happy. Whoa And this this is what makes it like a like a robot You could see when the questions are starting to make her uncomfortable, you know, she'd return the wallet and call the police. I love it. No, um I Jesus fuck.
Like that with the little wheezing bellows thing. Okay, here's my only thing. He's dreaming. Nailed it. You ever seen that? This is the world. We didn't want everything to be clean. Yes, absolutely.
