It's a book about Sybil, and it's about a woman who had multiple personality disorder. He's like a knoller, right? When your desk is minimal, you really don't want any work on it. She really wants a cigarette and they won't let her have one. Do you have any idea I oh I s I see fr friends d do it and they did cold turkey? I'm here to be your a account uh bill a problem. And there's all different um uh that mine is gonna spoil alert. I can't tell if this is a bit or not. Oh no, as as you should. And I feel like I'm full on like I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. You guys look like you're having a lot of fun. It's like you want the problem is you you you we think you're gonna bring a gun to a knife fight, right?

And I'm not even saying like I like I'm not saying like, oh, this is who I am in my head and I'm like a psycho. But I isn't an important distinction also to say like 'cause then there's there's of course then we're hearing the voice already, but the people who are like, Well, this is all part of your dysmorphia, dysphoria, there's all these things and like your mental illness that causes you to want to go dress like a dog and you're like, Well, no, it's just that I read in the New York Times that this thing's gonna take your job and put your daughter in a well. But like it's when when those things don't work, okay, well, that's with something that's deeply integrated into the hardware and software of the Apple ecosystem.

If I what would you adjust your velocity, do you feel like to mine? And and we always end up right here having a conversation about how we start. Like look at my pens, they're all mold. Well no getting off energy drinks or uh no no um getting off anxiety medication, it immediately makes you anxious about trying to make it. It's like, oh let's go, it's fun. Man, I you're weak like H. It's like no, I just really want lost turn. Brassa fresa schnaggle brassa. It's how I I mean like there's just there's tons of stuff. And it's just like it's just you can tell it I don't know. Like just watching it. for each other. From Mima's birthday. And at first I'm like, oh, that's interesting, because there's a lot of stuff Meta's not been too great about.

Like this is how our cognitive biases work with familiarity and things like that. Uh double clicking the analytics. And that's that's really good. And you know, then they say something like, you know, farts or whatever. You're at a playground and I'm getting used to it. He was right. Or don't you realize like I'm not even trying to do it from that point of view. Sounds interesting. And to use Siri, there's all kinds of great things you can do with things and Siri, like crazy stuff. I don't think I'm gonna end up sticking with it, but I all of that, great, block out time, create a task in this area, all that kind of stuff. um Bucky where I'm just like winter soldier. What are you talking about?

It's like an old lady name, but it's a waitress. A user of magic, if you like. You don't sound like it. There's nothing to apologize for. No. come back, the food's not hot enough, they gotta go heat it up. I I'd say to myself, probably in different words, because, you know, it was nineteen seventy-five. It's very strange. fun. I I think uh you're a little behind the times. Was a video that Van Nice. I hear it. Hey y'all. Festering seed! That was in like every rectif for fifty episodes. Adam Driver's level of commitment to that sketch, the makeup. Ho oh my god and so he shall so much. in sketches. Yes, well, he told it enough anyway. C cr crush it right into dust, huh? I'll say the S word or something.

Were they reconciled or No, no, I I I I it's not that I didn't it's it's not just that I didn't like the movie, it's the way that I didn't like it was wrong. Oh. Uh, what we were talking about, my alarm almost went off. uh for being there and like you know you could potentially if it's my sequel or something you can unintentionally drop tables or something but that began with a variable it began with dollar sign It it was whatever predated car play or whatever was built i i in on any sort of digital um dax, I think that's what they're called. Beginning the beginning. Where it's like, you know, it's like a four-four beat, but it's pacata pakata paka ta paka ta paka-tap where it's three against four?

A drink and a brand of sticky tape, Mike Myers says. Uh Lombard rhythm. Um it sounds kinda like a reel or a uh or a a strath spay, maybe. Look at her goddamn face. Oh, I want a photo. And Julian Baker as Oh holy shit. Two two that comes straight to mind, blank check and flop house. Yeah, yeah. Mm-hmm. And I completely loved her uh her record. So don't get weird. Uh, you sent me some funny glasses that uh uh had apparently just sat there for a couple days because I didn't realize they were for me. What you need to know about these is they they're the form factor of eyeglasses or sunglasses. mm, you know, sixteen by nine or whatever portals and there are mirrors at forty five degrees that enable when you look the when your head is erect and looking forward, what you see is whatever's ninety degrees in front of you.

W one of those things that is probably very, very useful for folks for a certain accessibility reason. Silly. Well what I tried uh didn't fit, but uh putting these on on top of the um orange glasses that are uh supposed to, but I don't think they really do block the U V from blue lights. It's a jokey thing 'cause it's kind of a little bit like AR in the sense that you're seeing things. There's gonna be a backlash against AR. So do you remember that series of episodes for a while where whoever God bless them, whoever was episod uh episoding, whoever was editing our show was cutting it way too tight. Did it it's like a comedy bit to me. It's like here's the New York Times. I feel like such a fucking shill.

When somebody's like, oh man, you care about this thing, right? Sure you don't believe it now. No, that's why that happens there. was just because I am thinking about artificial intelligence so much, trying to understand the perspectives of um the the the moral pan I actually w what did you call it a moral moral hazard. and given them the best information about that, but they're still intentionally ignorant. But in any case, it's something where somebody's told you this is a thing that you should be concerned about and then you get concerned about it. I'm not even gonna say the part I wanna say, which is well, is there a p possibility that your kid is actually just depressed and it's not completely because of their phone?

I despise Lindsey Graham so much. The way the love that you have for each other on a children's playground shows me that like I I guess you're you're here You need those little alcoves and like there's stuff that you can do. I I I'm not trying to bust a gut here, but like I I know that there's more than one forum in this world that have really helped make somebody's week a little more manageable. be the top hat too. And jokes leaving the room, I think that you understand play more than most people I know who's going to be. Exactly. c close that uh parentheses. a bullet of slug, a magazine and a jacket. Did d anybody my age remember when your mom wouldn't let you listen to heavy metal? Isn't that a line?

Well, can can isn't it also possible that being safe means being certain? You got your you got your uh Captain Picard brooch that's out there shooting laser beams on your hand and it's capturing what you ask and all that kind of stuff and it's mismeasuring your almond proteins. And I'm just I I don't know what that looks like yet, but like my brain melts down. There's so many things in the world that wanna become a sink for information in my life. And I was like, so that guy gets back to his h hotel room at 10, he's a little buzzed. The the pin at all, I think there's a little bit of moderately bad faith in the whole like throwing your throw your phone away. Why don't you start hooking it together for me beyond s ML in air quotes that lets me see when Google Docs is something I might want to open?

And they're pretty cool and they're gonna take a lot more work. Or you can get a cook for your friend. I fucking love that. versus what does it feel like is there? I guess didn't want to interrupt you. This week's challenge, see from a different perspective. Um, Cloud, Chase, uh, oh, Skylar. Uh in the 70s it was a very popular book and then became a movie. by either feigning or having an eating disorder. The b the membership feed? It's an episode of Spotlight. Doc Shepard. That seems a little a little hurtful. Doing doing videos about ringing bells must be nice. He has the tools that he needs for what it is that he wants to do, which presumably is making YouTube videos about organization, but still very cool.

Uh they're they're brothers, so there's a lot of crossing. Um that uh just talking about the things you don't want to say. My grandparents in pictures from the forties and fifties look so cool smoking cigarettes. S NL scotch. But I want to be you when I grow up. in the sketch. Anyway, uh sounds like you're having an okay day. that causes my I am leaving the office routine to go. Ugh, like this happens to me all the time with Apple TV. Now I say start from the beginning, which I don't like saying as much. Called the beginning. wherever you left off two years ago watching that movie. And um the show was called Shit My Dad Says. The one about how nobody's everybody's stupid and nobody remembers anything anymore because because COVID.

Oh my god, this is so fucking funny to me. Uh no, no, also though in s in uh cars or any smart speakers before you would put something in. A month apart, so they're like Polak twins. I think it's Scotch Scotch Snaps. Cardi B, I think she has blood in her shoes or something. I know. And their their little individual like weirdnesses you kind of see. Th they just talk about how we didn't think this was going to happen. things that they do, not just roles exactly, but like it really is they've given some thought and effort to what they're doing musically. It's like I don't know. in your day-to-day. No, no. I don't want to have my screens be over bright, but I don't have strong my vision, obviously I'm an old guy and I wear glasses.

But like, you know, in kind of low light with incomplete binocular vision, I kind of have to like if I'm reading like last night, what was I reading? I can see the benefit in that. And like if I add glasses to that w I don't even know what that's gonna look like, but I think it will be a little Teutonic looking. for the inevitable moral panic around augmented reality. Cribed from Pessimist Archive, but that that's one that I I I mentioned sometimes. Yeah. uh like ends of words were cut off. I'm listening. Spoke to drafts this morning. You know that little four four panel cartoon of the guy who creates all the havoc and then acts like something happened to him. Have you ever made something that people use in a way you didn't intend in uh in fact you had people take something you've used?

That's I don't know if I've ever heard of that versus well what's the difference between a moral hazard versus a moral panic? You're gay bashing. Like young people do. Oh, you're you guys seem really close. Which is this really deliberately hurtful thing that I'm going to say to you. for kids was so huge. experience something very different. Like when we play Monopoly, like sometimes I want to be the Scotty and sometimes I wanna be the shoe. Like what the whole you're playing a game. Just the even the ones where you go in and get to pick like your character class as against your species, as against your like this Lord of the Rings sort of approach of like I guess I not all dwarves have to be miners, but you know dwarves and uh m more so watching people play Dungeons and Dragons as very different versions of themselves and sometimes very similar versions of them.

Or or ET or something. and uh was like, oh, this is this is awesome, but would not uh acknowledge that it was like a v a a video game. Uh assume good faith with people who are skeptical about this and try to understand their POV? But see, that's how they get the messages in there. The the um she uh they drag they drag individual people for being left wing? That kind of that's the whole basis of the chicken problem in some ways is the like the voice I hear in my head of the person I I least like or candidly enough, sometimes it's the person in myself I like the least least that I hear. you know, review or was it rewind. finding it and then integrating it with other things in my life that are value is what it's all about.

uh ranty rant about it. I said, let's take an example of like a very busy businessman. has the feeling of something in Skymall. How do you find this person's phone number? Well, the thing John I John really highlights is, well, yeah, but there's not going to be any integration into any other part of the OS. on their site that's like, you know, there's something that basically does the bike log. Where where I say like, hey Dingus, in in things, camera, add by milk. If you want to stab somebody enough, anything can be a knife. uh not necessarily people I clash with, but um people I don't understand. potentially in curiosity can be incurable. And you know it, you should apologize. This abundance of caution leads us to pick them some of the most extreme points of view that feel like it's something the powerful man likes.

Oh, no, I no please don't. I deal with the chicken problem. room that's very well lit, maybe like Mrs. and who are now extremely successful in this sort of black community. But like but well here's the way I put it. And and you see it every day, you see it every day on the internet. That's how everything feels like all the time. The other one. Isn't that a reference to the woman who had th like false memories? You could tell, could you? Because some some people just the just can't be on time for things. I think it's more of a in uh and I don't like this. Uh-huh. No, I'm trying to understand what Shepherd. Desk. Cigarette Oh man, my my Mima and Peapaw gave up cigarettes pretty pretty early. been uh as much, thank goodness, but it is um you know plant is the one I used to take, and that's not as bad, right?

Up and down now. I well, but no one gets to see it, so uh If if you're a really confident confident young woman and you're popping pills. Sit by me, you know what I'm saying? Exactly. Where like you think you know what the bid is, and then they somehow nail like two really hard left turns. And the fact that you cut back to Pete Davidson and he's like entertained by like by what he's got his bib on and he's entertained by what he's watching That that sketch w would not have gone over when Mulaney was a writer. Yeah. There's a phrase that I say. have and use. I I think it's because a lot of uh SoundCloud r rap and and trap stuff from a while ago had dollar sign names. Uh no. about about how everybody's stupid now.

Uh, what happened was I I forg I don't know the terminology for this, but you know, normally like there's stuff you do in a database Uh yes, there was a lot of things. Yeah. Oh my god, this is. Oh my goodness, they were awfully good. Jesus Christ, I I I honor them so much. Okay, so what we're doing here is I just want to make sure. It's kind of bold to do what they've been doing in the way that they've been doing it without like being pussy riot or something. Did you read the interview I sent you with them? Yeah. Um, not uh not like uh b by able to, I mean able to on stage. What was this week's challenge, Merlin man? But they took what Phoebe Bridges had and uh she's like, you know, I mean uh have a tour with Taylor Swift.

Lady readers. Uh, that, you know, that that's one that I remember from my youth. Oh did did one of them you think give uh you a stress bump? Um and he's obsessed with thinking I kissed every girl in the yearbook. Although I was bad and dirty, often by myself. in the nineties with tobacco and then more recently and it's it's an approach that I've been taking with vaping and the thing nobody was people were saying like it's finally it's everybody's locking arms across party lines and all this stuff to like protect children. You know, it's sort of like that thing people say where like you know There there's my I don't have a bee in my bonnet. I I'm I've learned to become because I'm a lifestyle holding call field in part, like I've learned to become skeptical.

doorstep and now you owe me money. And until I've made a point of changing it, I've been how I always was. Find a place that you can go and work off this energy and learn to behave in public like a young gentleman. Maybe maybe this lady could take you out dancing today. stay alive. Because you did. things adjacent to your personality where you're very intrigued by this idea of like who you can be not who you can be in this world, but like what can happen in this world, how you get to control how you experience it. what role stuff like AR, VR, um, Vision Pro, like w as much as you're comfortable, could you say like what that means for you? look at my body in an avatar of a like a cis man's avatar.

I can't play as an uh in an an overweight 40-year-old man. Right. avatars and I'm not talking about even like dancing around like a storm trooper or or being a a a zombie or anything, but like looking d down at your c controllers and like seeing just it I mean you know it's a video game, right? Right. Not all dwarfs. for a a future challenge, but um as Matt has gotten m uh uh hey if this was someone's first episode my spouse Matt uh is very into Dungeons and Dragons right now I mean, i i I've come around on that too, of like, you know, now I think Roger Ebert was a little bit, you know, over his skis about the whole video game thing. C i it f uh fuck it. Uh like an of on rails RPG and i almost a visual novel sort sort of thing.

Where like like let's so like you you're saying here, I think we're talking about uh actually an oddly similar thing acc accidentally. Where like your your curiosity about this m might almost never have existed. Hate speech. Well, it's related to a lot of things. The praying book, but it was a I swear to god I thought there was a line where she talked about the jukebox that plays the greatest hits of my failure. It's so important to us to feel safe. living right next door to people who are terrified of vulnerability of any time. might have a very good case for choosing not to be publicly vulnerable vul vulnerable about things because of a variety of reasons over your life and especially the last ten years, right?

You know, and it John and I talked about the main topic last night on rectifs. Whatever device, all you know, I got all the devices. Siri with things, you gotta do a goofy incantation. What like what if what planet are you from? Pick a lane and like this, but but the thing is you can't sell this for $700 as an iPhone accessory. Yep. That's that's how I feel. oovra of everything we've ever done with actual words. And if you're doing stuff with words and stuff with arithmetic, if it's giving you answers to arithmetic that you can tell is wrong, that's a problem. Triggs, eh? Like the thing we talked about, right? when they're not good at it. Th this is omnipresent like buzz in my head that it's valuable for me to be aware of and then I have mechanisms and tools.

Focal length and the ability to zoom in versus zoom out. And like I think one thing that CBT encourages you gently to do is to say like what's there versus, I want to put this carefully, what's there versus what feels like. It's like, well, there's something happening right now. I don't know, some kind of like we're virtually I I sometimes very much ver feel virtually like a Manchurian candidate or a r uh you know, or Oh my gosh. w a woman who is now temporarily at least of means. You know, we've we've got this, and maybe these people would like that. Yeah. Some sharp but safe tools to have in your box. be able to repot itself even just for a minute can absolutely change your day. Stupid Friday.

Oh you understand. Somewhere. Oh, I am so excited for th this. Show you some of Tom Sachs's work who is I uh no, it'll just it'll just be in show notes, but they're Do people live stream think mm? That's part of the problem, I think. It's uh what what do you call it? lobster diner is just kind of running constantly in the background. Original he originally he was a w waiter and then he became the mater D and he kept like fucking it up so if you know it because he is not an actor whereas Adam Driver Boom boom boom boom boom boom boom. It really you too. Because I don't know how the song goes. Uh she she is the one who dated and then dumped Pete Davidson. Yes. They're having so much fun with it.

Um but you say that because you sent me a picture that you were very excited about. They really gotta leg in a uh leg up. All right. Uh and the challenge. Is that a song? That was going to be show art until the the Pete Davidson boy picture showed up. Like, you know, when I first heard, oh guess what? die in this one single way that we all continue to do, which is being in a car. It's yeah. One time my kid and I roll, this is a true this is a true story. And there's like three or four teenagers at the under 12 area of the park. And I did what I would say sometimes when I encountered something like that with my kid. Right? I ha have you ever read the Cyberpunk Manifesto? Um 80 something. No, no, and uh as as the technology has grown, like it i it got like uh being able to have different genders in Animal Crossing Yes, it is cool to like go up to this virtual mirror and just see the basic ass like uh d dad that like uh the the dad bot the the It's weird to aspire to a dad bot, but that's like very much my vibe.

And it like that that was awesome and and a thing th but it became more interesting when I guess tr trying on different grade. mostly I think. Of not only what you're missing in terms of the positive, but what you're unfortunately now absolutely missing in terms of the negative. of of concerns. You sound like fucking libs of TikTok and it That's an anti progressive group. When I say I love all that stuff, again, sorry, I there's two phrases I want to become famous for from this month. And if you can't be if you can't be given the territory, you're not interested in the map. perspective. Like that. I gotta get some kind of distance from this very like hot sensation that I'm having about something.

If I can find expansiveness, if I can find width and breadth to what's happening, if I can see that hot feeling in a lot much larger And uh that's enough. Why would you do that? No, I'm not. It will play something from Apple Music. at all several points along the flow of information in but especially in a database where you control out or di you disallow certain characters or you control them out, you know, because it has a functional reason. No mm I've never heard that song but I've seen the title of it. That so that's Lucy on the right, or excuse me, on the left, that's Lucy on the Lucy as Pete Davidson. Oh I mm, that's uh I I've I've kind of come up with I'm gonna make this the show art if you don't mind.

Yes, we had not come up with a name bec or the f the final copy, as I like to think of it, and I th I think you nailed it, actually. Right. And then when Instagram was cool with the IOS, but then thing after thing after thing after thing that I know the boiling frog's not really boiling, but thing after thing after thing happened and everybody's still on there and then threads happen against any sort of generative a AI, except they call it general AI AI and I'm like, mmm, very different dude. It's not it's not the Kurtz file. But the j just having uh that d desire, that is a very common uh um thing that a lot of uh n trans nerds who can do. could change your skin color. Right. That's that's part of the problem is you think that by being a big prick about this stuff you sound really safe and smart.

Um, but there's a quote I thought it was from Bird by Bird. The more you try and become secure, the more you lock yourself into something that's not secure at all. You have so much stuff mitigating against the success of this product, including, as again Jason and other people said, who told you people don't like their phone? I mean, people who care about things practice and rehearse. And like this idea of looking at things from a different point of view has become so instrumental in so many parts of my life. Mm-hmm. Which is she goes into the house of these very rich black people with a bag of shoes that no one wanted anymore. Right? That's a really good mmm. And so your TiVo would just go tits up if it had that on it because right?

Or maybe just Scott Scotch. Oh, I uh uh know one of those names. Oh, I already assumed that that was a good thing. That message I sent to my friend was uh laced with hey, uh g uh also, not obviously, but people can infer infer that this person was also trans and it's like, hey, you know how our lives are are hell right now? But but like, oh god, it's it's like you could do a mad lib from d uh technology to i I hate to be the Buddhist guy here, but oh my god, you've set yourself up for a life of misery. Um but like I I I I am not a I but like I I would love it if it could like answer basic questions for me. You've got to stop apologizing. Is there. The name of the RSS feed? But like, oh you know, I like you know what I like?

is sort of a short profile and interview with all of them that is b exactly expressing exactly what you're saying through their own words. Before you obviously before you even get to the image stuff, who cares? No no, I mean I did use the well what's the official name of these glasses? BTK killer out of out of jail. It's so fucking funny. I'd like to first hear how you I'd like you to talk to a bunch of those people and ask them questions and see how they answer because my gut is that's an easy win for each of those attorneys general. I reckon about Lindsey Graham. played and he talked about the play uh the playing of it that was kind of a um sort of like uh not not missed but it was just a um It was something very different.

If me, and she's played by the mother, is played by, oh god, that wonderful singer in the Carpal Karaoke video, uh, the the Broadway and opera singer whom I love. An assertion of agency. My grandmother, it took her forever to do everything. Yes. Only the p what is it only the strong are worthy to suck from Mother Nature's teeth? Dan Bl friend of the show Dan Blondell on Macedon s suggested them because it's s Yes. The way the the the s the speed with which they do the edits on that show, but still have the volume of his mouth noises so fucking loud. And why do you care, Merlin? Isn't that kind of part of it? But like I the yeah, that's nostalgia value, but like I'm utterly not involved with any parts of this culture.

He was right about a lot of other things. Isn't that still kind of a pretty good place to start for some stuff? You can't be vulnerable. It's reversion to the common. What is a waitress name? Yeah. Is interrogating something around this question in some ways. Like is this a t a 2023 Dylan thing? I want to let's let's cut the pretense of the phone. It's an easy slam dunk to like look like they're doing something that doesn't actually require that much effort, but makes them look really good. And uh and then of course, they're initially, of course, very kind of taken aback by that, because who's this guy with a with a little kid holding his hand that says that? But like, is this your first day?

Exactly. They have this like secret hidden feed where they put the It's the membership. Oh my god, I think my alarm's about to go off and I don't know why. Alright, well we'll see what happens. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Really? I think that the God, they're so cool. Like let alone like sharing like and like s like I I don't know what their songwriting credit situation is, but like in the way they come up with parts for each one of them and they each like have kind of like Sometimes I don't listen to the button. I listened I listened to the daily today. But you f you know what I mean? Like and and and similarly, like whether however seriously you take a given game, m maybe you like it because there's no middle sliders.

You know, I mean that's the point. A couple got it, but every single one of them got it wrong differently. Which is one of the numerous reasons I'm I become a pill about this, Alex. And like, okay, that is the most basic shit. Crossover. Because then you could have all your tools you're not really using to make anything good and you're putting them in in a certain order by size and you know arrangement. First of all, she's super funny. Which I mean you could knock me over with a feather. All right. It's it's it's just this uh My eyes are up here. You guys you you guys what are you fifteen, sixteen, you're climbing on monkey bars? Oh no, I I I And that's not that's not gentle fun, that's lashing out.

That was and that is the thing that quickly with v virtual reality and like VR avatar stuff, um, I realized was, oh I thought it was in bird by bird. You're better than me? Dan Harmon apology. That's not something the that that's something the weak man likes. You sound distracted. Sometimes I'm being passive aggressive, but today I'm just I know. I I know if I started smoking cigarettes and enjoyed it, I would not have had the discipline to be. Knock some pigs. I'll put mine on too so I can see. No, no, no. Well whatever, whatever. And uh but don't make me beat you. Exactly. That's right. Looking kind of like, okay, so I wish I had a this photo might be low res, but you'll get the just you can look it up on your there you go, look at that.

I didn't know either of them. I wouldn't I'm never in a million years say something today, but they're just being they're being awful and they're they're cursing an awful lot and they're they're being really kind of hateful and loud. It if it's a big thing. Anyways, but so but if I say that and Mr. Let's see. Sorry. Yep. Oh people people you um are like confronting or dealing with? So I think there's all kinds of different ways. I don't know. So much of my John Mullaney uh uh r references go out of my head uh one, because I'm not good at quoting things, but two, because Come on with my festering seed. I mean, maybe the the big one of course being the festering seed part at the end. Don't be good, don't be good, don't be good.
