MerlinGood Alex to you.
AlexOh, and a good Alex after morning to you too, Merlin. How are you? What's funny about that? It's not even a joke.
MerlinAt some point, a tone started being produced by you that made it sound like you're worried that I'm going to do something like bad to myself. I get a very checking in, just checking in vibe.
Speaker AHi, Alex. How are you? Hey, buddy. Oh, do you want a sip of juice?
AlexYeah.
Speaker AWant me to fluff your pillows?
AlexShow me on the doll where he touched you. It's okay. Oh, God. That got dark.
MerlinNo. Hand me the doll. This will take a while. And here. And here. And here. That's me showing you on the doll.
AlexOh.
MerlinYeah. I was playing with you in the space.
AlexI thought this was a reference. Oh. Oh. Oh, there and there and there.
MerlinOh. It sounded like you and two.
AlexAll right.
MerlinYou want to do another take?
AlexThree, two, one. But play in this one. Hey, Merlin, where did he touch you on the doll?
MerlinOh, he hit me in the Jesus spot. That's where I sit down in church and where I stand up to leave. How are you? Are you well? You know, you and I have some similarities, it occurs to me. We're not so different.
AlexWe do.
MerlinYou and I had almost the same shit sleep last night, I noticed.
AlexWe did, but this is obviously very exciting. Our bad sleep, as it is typed into the document.
I hated that tweet trend so much. Bad sleep.
MerlinWhat did you do? Oh, you like to do claps?
AlexI don't know who needs to hear this, but...
MerlinI do that. I don't know who needs to hear this. Fam, what I do is I do colon clap. Colon clap. Hi, I'm colon clap. It's me. Put me in your butt.
AlexShow me of the dough where they clapped you.
MerlinRemove the priest's finger and put in hi. Alex and I do a thing sometimes where one of us or the other will be bitching about sleep which is a known issue as we say in the software game and we'll send each other screen grabs of our sleep apps to prove it
Alexbecause we normally just have bug fixes and improvements.
MerlinIt's just like that thing we talked about, the mean girls thing where you talk about how fat your thighs are. Are we doing a grown folks version of that where we talk about how terrible our sleep is? We should probably hit our thighs anyway.
Speaker AI hate them. I hate them. I hate them. They're so big.
AlexOh, gosh. I only got eight and a half hours of sleep tonight and only seven and a half of them were qualities. But, you know.
MerlinI know. It's like friends with good kids.
AlexYou know what?
MerlinKeep it to yourself. If you have a good kid, keep it to yourself. I keep it to myself constantly. You never know I have a good kid.
AlexI know. Never, never. Oh.
MerlinYou know what? You're making a lot of you. You started. You do that thing. This is another one of your things. I'm going to put this on the list of Alex's things.
Alexthe big alex thing you have a wisdom project i have things i'll put it in obsidian
Merlinum yeah uh no your main thing of course is when you do that dissociative thing uh i'm not trying to pathologize you except you know um you um were you talking about yourself in the third person
Alexrealization i've been to brain school what it's it's derealization oh what have you been to brain
Merlinschool no i haven't you have so much to teach me i know oh wait i'm writing this down so derealization versus dissociative is different right is what you're saying yes yes this oh no what is what is what is uh senator herschel walker have he's he's got he's got he's got what we used to i know we don't say this anymore but uh he's got the um what we used to call multiple personality disorder I think.
Speaker AOh. I.
MerlinNo, doesn't he have dissociative things? So dissociative versus, I'm writing this down, this is not for the show, dissociative versus, what's the other one you said, depersonalized?
AlexDerealization.
Speaker ADerealization.
MerlinYes.
Speaker AI'll save it for the show.
MerlinOkay. But no, but the other thing you do is like you do this, you do that noise. I think we both like making humming noises and we have different humming noises. And like, yeah, kind of like that, sort of. But you're like... And you did it today for the first time. You did it twice in our private text channel. You said, let me just get the quote exactly right. This might be a text expander. M-M-M-M-M-M-M-R-R-R-R-R-R-M-M-M-M.
And you said that after you sent me a New York Times link.
AlexI did. And it's not a text expander snippet. It's just the microphone.
MerlinJust your brain. It's your de-realizing. No. Then you said it again. You said, I was suggesting that it was a nice, I was complimenting you and saying it's a nice pairing with something I had wanted to talk about. And then you said, again, I'll save it for the show. And then I said, you're so weird. And you said, thank you. And I spent eight minutes probably trying to find the right spot in the best of Jiminy Glick because that's a running bit on Jiminy Glick. Jiminy Glick, you know, he says something to one of the celebrities and they say, you know, you're really insufferable.
And he goes, thank you. And then like a Larry David will go like, it wasn't a compliment because I feel like that's what we're doing today.
AlexNo, no, it's because of the bad sleep.
MerlinDo you think this guy, the listeners, your pair of friends aren't going to know, but do you think it's because the Eating Porcelain article
Alexis wheezing the juice off the birds aren't real man no i think uh all right you're saving this
Merlinfor the show back circle we've already gotten through our sleep alex you know mine was deceptive so you had like straight up wait let me go back is it okay to mention this yes please okay so you sent me your it's the app i don't use as much watch man sleep sleep boys watch it's sleep watch yeah and i like the other one sleep plus plus i like the other great apps what do i use i think
Alexyou use auto sleep yeah i use a cascade of apps well it doesn't cost anything alex it's like
Merlinsyncing your calendar events exactly exactly um you slept according to this uh you slept from 1.20 a.m. Central Loop time to 4.10 a.m. Now, mine says 1 a.m. to 5.30 a.m., but honestly, it's that deep sleep you see down at, you know, whatever that is, 5-something. I've really mostly been up since like 3.30. I was fitful. I was having fitful sleep and trying not to feel bad about it.
AlexOh, no. Well, I thought it was going to go the opposite way since sometimes mine had my being my sleep apps has started to overshoot because at night my heart rate will get so low as compared to years of sleep data it thinks i'm asleep but no that's wild i i
Merlinbet you can tweak that somewhere you know what's interesting though is um yeah but i like to lie to myself and if i didn't lie to myself i i wouldn't talk to myself at all yeah it's not It's like I was in high school. You knew what you were getting into. When I got into a relationship with myself, I knew what I was in for.
AlexOh, indeed.
MerlinI do have some good masturbation stories this week.
Speaker AGood, good.
MerlinBut what I'm noting in yours that's so fascinating, and I'll try to make this understandable as somebody who's not using this particular app, but it tracks a bunch of stuff, and a lot of these apps tries to jam a lot into the interface. A lot of us who have gone intermediate level with trying to improve sleep, You're looking for, like you say, more quality sleep, more deep sleep. You know, whatever it is that you're looking for, you're watching those trends. And one of mine that needs the help is heart rate variability. But, you know, also this app gives you like a pretty like a generic score based on like you versus people your age, you versus yourself.
And what's upsetting to me about yours is you're in the orange zone for today with a score of 397. But I do notice just below that and small, it's saying it's up 195 points from yesterday.
AlexOkay.
MerlinOkay. No, no. So can you give me a sense of what Monday night was like for you?
AlexIt was pretty bad. No. I think just my score in general has been down because I've been stressed about family.
MerlinYour sleep bank is shit. I'm here to tell you.
AlexYes. Yes. I agree. but just
MerlinYou're overdrawn
AlexCurrently my
MerlinYou're at 32 Your three days 32 percent My three days 138 percent
AlexYes Well My As we speak My grandpa is traveling from Florida to Illinois via ambulance
MerlinHow long are you going to hang it all on this Alex It can't be forever
AlexI know
MerlinIs this a prank Is this an Anna Dalvey Foundation kind of thing Like is this your front Oh And that other Anna, the other Anna that's in the news is not the same Anna, right?
AlexI mean, he's 87. So hopefully I want this grift to happen as long as possible. 87. What about hotel?
MerlinHe's still got a lot of miles on those tires. He'll be fine.
AlexYeah. I mean, unfortunately or unfortunately, our family is pretty rugged. The Yetis. Yes. The Yetis are having a time.
MerlinThe Yeti-owitses. They had to change it at Ellis Island. It's not even a joke. If you want me to be your foster or your temporary grandfather, like even just now, because maybe, I don't know, I don't know if you can call him or whatever, but I would do it, but you do have to call me Peepaw.
AlexNo, you're my papa, because the math has been done by multiple people on the internet, specifically on Twitter.com, that you could easily have been my father.
MerlinOh, you mean like genital working years was? Oh, I've looked at that. You know, I had, when I say I had a scare, a lady I knew had a scare.
It's a pig and chicken type situation, right? I'm not saying she's a pig. Oh my God, okay. I handled it all very poorly, But, yeah, I'm aware that based on my, as we say on political Twitter, based on my priors, I could have been putting people in the world, you know, March 84. Well, sorry, sorry, sorry. What's March? March plus nine would be around New Year's of 84.
AlexOh, I don't want to think. No, I was an immaculate conception. I am. I'm my own Jesus. But. Oh.
MerlinI'm deceptive. I am personally, Jesus. No comedy points. That's an old, no zero comedy points. That's an old, old song. No, no, but anyway, hey, hey, like the rest of the internet, I'm pulling for Peepaw and for you.
AlexIt's doing great, weirdly, but thank you. So this sleep screenshot is deceptive because it, sure i only got uh two hours earlier today and it's the one from 9 58 your time yes this shows that yeah i only got two hours and 15 minutes of sleep but and i did go to bed relatively late but that was my own fault i was making poor decisions and by that i mean i was watching uh dungeons and
Merlindragon's live plays until 1 a.m and this goddamn tv keeps me up i think it has a big role in it i've tried to start getting more of a handle on it and like listening to listening to my body listen to my cues and like i said to dan benjamin the other day like as soon as i should my i should know that as soon as i turn on youtube that is my body saying hey bud time to go to bed well wasn't
Alexhis response something like well the caveman didn't have tv so you should be away from it
Merlinmy other app i'm not gonna engage in this i'm just uh no but this i wrote a whole book about
Alexmy mental health this this morning i woke up because there was a shout our garbage people were shouting not at one another but at well like with one another like really people outside who the garbage men. I'm going to gender them. I apologize.
Speaker AYou know what? Thank you.
AlexThank you. I'm being bold and brave. But there was a lot of shouting and commotion and crashing, but it seemed to resolve itself.
MerlinI just couldn't get back to sleep. That's good. But you know, you know if you did have to show up in court. I've got. So, yeah, I really I like my app for this, but they're all good apps. I'll send you that.
AlexThere's no tossing and turning, though. I was just excited to get up with the J.
MerlinI didn't feel that bad.
AlexYeah.
MerlinYeah. And I mean, like, it's like, I keep talking about this because, I don't know, I think I've become ridiculous. But I do feel like it's worth saying because I want to hear it, and I hope it's worth saying because other people need to hear it or would like to hear it, is the feeling bad about feeling bad shit. Alex, you can't overstate it. and and and to be honest like so i went to what did i do last night shit oh i can tell you i watched um i watched 2001 i'd started 2001 in the morning because i woke up yesterday morning early
too i watched the first half of 2001 mostly and then watched the rest of it um last night and then watched some pretty good like um once again itunes or whatever we're calling it this week hides away so much stuff underneath the thing and it's hard to get to the thing you got to find that word extras and click on it and it had so much really good stuff under it um so i was watching that stuff that kept me up before the night before that it was hulu's uh hulu's tv show fargo
Alexsee yours is so much more fun i i watched a bunch of dnd alex oh no this this morning i ended up watching a lot of yaml videos because i feel like i i it's it's like a dash dash you know i'm saying Yeah, it's my Manic Pixie dream language.
MerlinCome on. Did you prepare that before the show? Is that before the show? Did you prepare that?
AlexWhat?
MerlinWait, so that wasn't a bit? You actually just said that out of nowhere? Manic Pixie dream language? That's really good. You're always accusing me of fishing for titles. Not always. I do that.
AlexYou talked about something one time on this show about how sometimes you write out bits and that...
MerlinI did that?
AlexYeah, yes.
MerlinI usually don't write out bits.
AlexDo you... Wait, wait. Is this a bit? Is the bit that you write out bits?
MerlinWell, the bits... You know, okay, I can tell off the... Please remember what you were talking about because, again, my brain is smooth as a fucking manatee right now. You know what I have done in the past...
AlexFamily markup language. I thought that was what you were commenting on. I'm like, no,
Merlinthis is a brilliant person. You said manic pixie dream language.
AlexIt's my manic pixie dream language because I don't really understand it, But I'm so horny for it.
MerlinOkay. I, too, and that's actually what I spent a lot in our challenge this week. That was one of the things I spent time on is saying, if I had this kind of metadata here, and what will it do in these three different places? Oh, Yama calls for taurine.
AlexWoo. Yes, there it is. All right.
MerlinSorry. Yama calls for taurine. Is that an API?
AlexI just, oh, no, no, I wish. Oh, just plug that right into my veins.
MerlinNo, it's flexible. It's really neat. It's really neat. And it's something I'll mention that I've just reacquainted myself with this week in playing with this is like the whole, I forget the multi markdown. Like, you know, there's all kinds of things as with blot and other things that do YAML or YAML-ish things. You can define your own key value pairs. So you could say, you know, lorem colon ipsum. And now from now on, like that's what that means. But you know what's neat is like you could do that right inside.
I can do that. So here's the thing. Oh, God. I'm already off the rails, aren't I? Oh, shit, I'm sorry.
AlexYou're already in the incidental show. You didn't even talk about how you write down bits because I... Are you writing down bits right now?
MerlinI wrote down Jeff Goldblum and I circled it. Bits. And then I'm going to write down Jeff Goldblum and I'm going to circle it. Okay, never mind. Forget it. Forget it. I'll save it for the show.
AlexYou're practicing Zettle bits. What is this? I'm so confused. is it a thing that you do like i do you really think i could make you less confused is there a way that i could conduct myself that would be useful for that do you ever think of a joke that you want to say on a podcast oh we're doing that write it down well oh wait whoa whoa whoa who's
Merlinthat i got i got oh why is my dnd not happening how did how my lady friend got through look at that oh la-di-da oh no oh no i made a mistake uh-oh i screwed up oh no oh god i really fucked up oh my god i've only ever done this once before and i live in dread of doing this this might be the show but probably not oh shit i'm sorry so sorry um that's a long story but
You know, we got that fake dishwasher.
AlexYes. The little rolly guy.
MerlinOh, God. So embarrassing. This is not the show. We don't have a way for the water to get in or the water to get out. So it's both manual. So water to get in is through pitchers. The water to get out goes into like a big, like a crab pot. And for the first time in the almost two years we've owned this, for the second time, rather, in the two years that we've owned this, I forgot to put the tube into the pot. So there's water all over the floor.
Speaker AOh, no. Oh, no.
MerlinOh, it's okay. No, it'll be fine. it's not going to be like permanent damage or anything. I just, I feel like a dummy. I am so sorry.
AlexPlease say that Alex, uh, did not encourage, but says you can, you are free at any moment to go if necessary. Also happy belated birthday.
MerlinOkay. Let's get all this in. Maybe this is the show. I don't know. Happy belated birthday. Oh, do you want me to send that with anything?
AlexOh, Oh, Oh, gosh. Yes. And this image. I sent you a bitmoji.
MerlinOkay. Also from Alex. I've got happy birthday birthday with that weird face person. And then I'm going to say screen. Well, it's an image of you.
AlexIt's not an image of me. It's a bitmoji of me.
MerlinI don't think it's a bitmoji. It's a bitmoji or memoji. It's a bitmoji.
AlexIt's the old school. No, bitmoji. Memoji is Apple's proprietary annoying sticker.
MerlinOkay, I sent it. I sent it.
AlexThat only I use.
MerlinOh, I'll send it. You know what I'll do also? I'll send you. I got some unauthorized photos. The young lordling took a photo of me. I'll send you that. The little lord took that photo.
Speaker AThat's so good.
MerlinOh, isn't that cute? Look at that. We're right outside. You know, it's funny. Brady's Bits. We went to this dumpling place. I think it's called Dumpling Time. I just call it Big Dumps. So we went to Big Dumps. and I keep saying it over and over because I'm a dad and I keep saying, are you guys going to get dumps? Are you going to get really big dumps? Stop it, please stop it. I'm like, no, but this place is famous for their dumps.
AlexThat's what Shane Gillis got in trouble for.
MerlinHis big dumps. Oh, I want to know.
AlexYeah. Was he in Happy Mondays? No, he got fired from SNL, but they let you in with that big backpack? I'm just genuinely surprised.
MerlinOh, you're looking, you zoomed a little, didn't you?
AlexNo, no, that's the important part. I did not zoom in. Next to you is a gigantic bag.
MerlinWell, on the chair next to me, do you see? Oh, look, that's a cute picture of me. See, I cut my own hair again. Really? Bravo. I'm rocking the lesbian thing hard. Thank you. But to your left, as you look at that, the pink neon on the ceiling, that's what the dump looks like. That's an adorable dump.
AlexIt's an adorable dump.
MerlinYeah.
AlexOh, my gosh.
MerlinSo we went out and we had big dumps. But it was right next to the big basketball where they play basketball at Chase Center. And there was some kind of big event going on there. And actually, Coach of the—I don't know what it was for. He was probably there to not talk about Draymond Green. But Steve Kerr was there.
AlexI know that that's a person who trends on Twitter.
MerlinNow, if you're like the little lord, you probably might be confusing Steph Kerr and Stephen Curry.
AlexOh, yes.
MerlinIs that possible? I didn't realize the similarity until we went to dumps the other night.
AlexStephen Curry is the attractive one. Yes.
MerlinYeah, he's the guy who can't be bothered to put in any effort for commercials that he does. But he's very good at basketball. And I love his family. His family is adorable. No, I like Steph Curry. Shut up, everybody. So we went to big dumps. I'll tell you when I prepared. Well, first of all, I learned a long time ago. We learned in You Look Nice today that preparing is the death of anything you do. It is. It was so bad. But like, you know what I'll do? When I know Dan's going to ask me if I'm down on the show floor. There's been times that I have pre-written something.
But I don't know. I don't generally, I don't think right bits. Closest I came this week for you and me is if we talk about people eating porcelain.
AlexOh.
MerlinI had ideas for other things we could do for our own challenge.
AlexOkay.
MerlinThese are really just unformed ideas. The show, though. Yeah. My favorite one so far is that young people are trading medications. Is that actually a thing?
AlexI don't. Wait. I don't know.
MerlinIt would be funny. It would be funny if like.
AlexAm I playing in this space?
MerlinI don't know. It's something about car pranks. Something about kitty litter. Something involving butts. Maybe something you smoke. I just the whole snorting porcelain article was just like on three levels was totally confusing to me. That's what I brought it up.
AlexOkay. Okay. Wow.
MerlinYou really leaned into that on that particular reading.
AlexDid you actually, what was perplexing about this New York Times piece?
MerlinDid we close? I still got Jeff Goldblum. I'm circling that right now. Yeah. It's been about a decade. We're going to talk about Kanye and how we don't talk about Kanye. And then what are we pivoting to? Dumps?
AlexWe got the adorable dumps in. the snorting crushed porcelain face reveals and a TikTok lawsuit, which is a New York Times.
MerlinThis is something that came across my transom, and I almost didn't put it in because it's such an old man thing for me to read this and go, huh? Here's the sound of me reading an article called Snorting Crushed Porcelain Face Reveals and a TikTok Lawsuit. Okay, here's me reading that. Huh? Did you see the Try Guys sketch on SNL? no i have not so i was able to use my new knowledge of what a try guy is
Alexi was surprised that you even said the words try and guys i'm gonna i'm gonna say this here i'm
Merlingonna say this one time i think this week's episode of snl was very very good and in many ways that made me extremely happy it reminded me of when people think of like what what was the good times of SNL, like, you know, like the, like 76 era or like the 91 era. Those eras were like all the people like from somebody's childhood. You remember, um, Brendan Gleeson was the host, the, um, Matt, I Moody.
AlexYeah.
MerlinYou know, um, he's, you know, he's worried about this. Oh my God. It was, he was so good, but they do a very funny bit where I'll just spoil the bit for you, which is it's a CNN report. It's reporter played by Brendan Gleeson reporting live from the white house. And he has to stop and break in with breaking news that they have an interview with the Try Guys. And the whole point of the whole bit. So it's funny. And Billy had to show me a picture to show me that these three people really look like the video that three Try Guys made. But it's like Brendan Gleeson just keeps underscoring like how huge this story is.
And like, you know, but the thing is, the thing you're missing in all of this, he's saying to the anchor is like, but like it was with one of the food babies. And she goes like, you keep saying that, like, what does that mean? which is exactly how I feel. Why does it matter that it was Try Guys and Food Babies? It's like, well, you're very insensitive to the way that coercion works in the workplace. I'm like, am I? What the fuck is a Food Baby or a Try Guy? Anyway, and my kid has officially declared it old person, dad humor, but I thought it was very funny. I think you would enjoy it. It's got Bowen Yang, who's charming.
And Mikey Day cracks up, I think, for probably the first time ever.
AlexThe Try Guys situation was very millennial internet drama.
Merlinit was a big big like that was i think i got the feeling that was the gist so like yeah it was um what's your name um nigo would wait wadeem you know the very funny african-american lady um i forget her name i don't know how to pronounce it if i did know it but she's like she's like wait wait what's happening so it was a non-consensual relationship and they're like no it was totally consensual it was a total consensual kiss and she's like what what and it keeps going on and and Brendan Fraser, or Brendan Fraser, Brendan Gleeson keeps breaking in to say,
yeah, but it was with one of the food babies in its wonderful Irish accent.
AlexAnd you thought that was funny, even though you have no idea what it is referencing?
MerlinWell, you can see why. It's because I didn't, because until, like, I guess, like everybody, I had to find out what a Try Guy is. It sounds like they have a show that they do what we do, but they're successful. And they actually, like, they eat hot Malaysian food or whatever is the gist that I got.
AlexYes.
MerlinBut the funny part is the, like, it's like that tweet i brought here a couple months ago like what every twitter trending topic looks like to me you know remember that one um yeah i don't know if i can find that again but anyway very good i'll find it for notes uh you can find show notes at dubaifriday.com
Alexand you can tweet at me at alex cox if you don't know who the try guys are because i have no idea who listens to this show and i wonder what the age because if you didn't know who the Try Guys were. Huh. I wonder.
MerlinHuh. I wonder. And I'll just say that the best way to reach Alex is obviously on Twitter, at Alex Cox. And the best way to reach me is through Alex Cox on Twitter. Yes. Do not include me on the line. I will remove it. So, we do bits. We've got, oh, oh, oh. So, okay. So, I just came across my trance, and somehow I forget. Can I just read a little bit of this? I mean, like, so you didn't think this article was hilarious?
Alexno it what not what is this art like this this article you sent me is just like a sum it says uh the week in internet things so it's just a little like summary well i thought it was a funny well-written thing no okay so this is called it wasn't supposed to be funny was it i don't know
Merlinthe lead nobody is grinding up porcelain dishes into a fine powder and snorting it like cocaine I'm going to read that again. This is the lead for this New York Times story. Nobody is grinding up porcelain dishes into a fine powder and snorting it like cocaine. Well, I didn't know. I didn't know. I didn't know that. I don't know what this person is talking about.
AlexOkay.
MerlinWhy do we even have to talk about whether people are literally crushing up porcelain and snorting it like cocaine? now let's now in fairness to me i'm i'm older than i've been and and now i'm even older you you're aware of the uh the snorting porcelain thing yes or the lack of snorting porcelain exactly well that's the next level that's the next level okay so al so anyway i'm sorry i'm born alex with all my problems this article is about i had no idea how much shit that i've
eventually heard about that sounds like the most eye-rolling old person example of how stupid you look tide tide pods obviously like being probably the big one right isn't that kind of the biggest of the like scare meme kind of topics don't eat tide pods they have to say it in their commercials
Alexnow and stuff like that but i think it was the first rainbow fentanyl of or not rainbow friend It was the first razor in the Halloween apples of Gen Z, I think.
MerlinOkay. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay. Well, anyway, I guess I didn't realize how many of these things started out in what sounds like a similar way as like a ha ha. Let's do a send up that everybody will immediately recognize is a completely fucking made up thing. And I had no idea how many things started with something relatively close to that mission statement.
AlexYes.
Merlinincluding that i didn't know the tide pods thing started as a bit yeah yeah i i didn't know i didn't know the duct tape challenge or the milk crate challenge or any of these other whatever the fuck these other things are but then so that second level is okay so you did know that and
Alexi didn't know that i should say also this is written by madison malone kircher who is a recent hire at the new york times and was a former co-host of a show i recommended and put in the
MerlinAnd you just call her writing specifically not funny.
AlexWell, this isn't. She is funny. But this is just a good summary of what went on the Internet this week.
MerlinI don't know. I think it's a funny writing style. But back to snorting. She is funny. But back to snorting pulverized dishes.
AlexYes.
MerlinAnd this is the third level where we really get into some old-fashioned shoe leather reporting. Sebastian Durfee. Sebastian Durfee
Speaker Athat's his real name
Merlinokay will it surprise you to know I had not heard of Sebastian Durfee until like yesterday but back to snorting pulverized dishes Sebastian Durfee an internet comedian and TikTok creator with over 150,000 followers invented the so called porcelain challenge to make fun of the way challenges and then this goes on and on Mr. Durfee on second attribution in a phone interview at the time said he wanted the challenge to be quote intentionally absurd meant to be scary on some level but easily debunked with any small amount of critical thinking i mean i could i could
see myself being i wish you'd be talking about this now there's going to be a kid out there right now who overhears this you know they act like they're watching bluey but they're actually hearing this and then they're going to want to go break up mommy's nice dishes or daddy's or they's nice dishes and then snort them because of this and then we get further into this and then this this paragraph that i just have to keep reading over and over he no longer has access to this account and has not been contacted by tiktok instead mr durfee is now posting videos on the platform
using an alternate account where he i think they'd be an alternative where he has a significantly
Alexsmaller audience alternate means every other okay i'm sorry keep going no there it is significantly
Merlinsmaller audience of just over 4 000 followers his most recent tiktok video is a dramatized satire disclaimer this goes on and on and then there's some kind of then the fourth level we get this big reveal we learn about something called dream and dream is a youtuber on youtube who garnered his fair share of this we finally revealed his face now this is different from mr durfee right yes this is a completely so we saw dream's face and people made fun of him is that the
Alexgist of this part of the story there yes but but no it is it is not the the gist you because you skipped over how dream is a popular streamer who has hidden his face for over a decade okay and he did the social media campaign where he was like all right i'm gonna reveal my face and the whole bit was he called various influencers and streamers and stuff and they posted their reactions
Merlinto him looking at oh those reaction videos oh an african-american man reacts to steely dan oh this is a fun paragraph this i'm gonna read this is a short paragraph this all changed on october 2nd when dream after teasing the event online in the preceding days revealed his face in a YouTube video titled, Hi, I'm Dream. It has been watched over 35 million times.
AlexYes. Okay.
MerlinYou know all of this. You knew all of this. You know Dream?
AlexYes, but this, I don't think, is an old person thing necessarily. This is kind of like a huh thing for anyone.
MerlinWhat about Bethany Frankel? Do you know about Bethany Frankel? no i do i do not know about that okay you're two for three though you win today
Alexshow what they won uh the the i found the secret to not feeling old is to make sure that you have a childhood where you're never cool you never know what people are talking about and what like the new popular thing is yeah
MerlinYou're the real hero.
AlexI am. I am. Because I see these things in passing. And when someone tweets about something as if everyone should know about it, like a reverse subtweet, I'm like, all right. I just want to know.
MerlinNo, I understand.
Speaker ASure.
MerlinYou're the one. My thing is, I don't use Twitter a lot during the day because I'm doing stuff. But I sometimes do. working no i don't like to be i don't like to sound like a big shot but i do but um i'll be using the uh the twitter web app and then at night when i'm in repose and i'm watching chris rock on the the hulu tv show fargo that's when i'll be using like i might be when i'm using like an ios app but so like i and i'm running all kinds of blockers where i don't see trends or magnifying
glass on the web but i do see it and my new thing is like especially if i'm making large dumps i'll bring the phone with me and i'll look at the phone i like to look at what's trending and then not
Alexclick on any of them and it feels really good that is where we differ and where you don't like
Merlinlooking at it and you do click i i do i knew you clicked but like it'll be show up and it'll just be like a bunch of a bunch of names and sometimes i can guess oh this is one of those hey fam let's at this trending things and there's other things and then where you go in and of course there's the there's the obligatory uh you know denzel washington image you know because you're so relieved the person isn't dead fam you you can't tell me you can't mention uh i don't know richard keel at this hour of the morning without telling me he's fine yeah yeah richard keel might be dead
Richard Kiel alive.
AlexI don't know who that is.
MerlinHe's Jaws from the James Bond movies.
AlexHe's Jaws from the James... All right, which James Bond?
MerlinNot as famous as Bethany Frankel.
AlexI feel like I know enough to know that that's funny, but I'm not sure.
MerlinMeanwhile, Bethany Frankel, a former star of Bravo's The Real Housewives of New York, turned diet cocktail entrepreneur, turned philanthropist, is less enthused about some online attention. Ms. Frankel, second mention, who also has-
AlexThat's the New York Times. That is not Madison's fault.
MerlinNo, I understand. No, no, no, I understand.
AlexI hate failing New York Times.
MerlinI noticed that, yeah, okay. Forget it then. She's grown a following on TikTok and is now suing the platform over a cardigan. More technically, she's suing over the alleged use of her image and likeness in advertisements for a counterfeit garment. A video of Ms. Frankel endorsing a pricey sweater was ripped and reused by a different company to make it appear as though she was recommending a much cheaper cardigan. She's on that shit. She's got lawyers on it.
Bethany is a terrible name. I'm going to spell it for you. Well, no. No, imagine you couldn't decide whether to name your poor child Beth or Kenny. Her name is Bethany.
Alexeveryone's favorite show Beth or Kenny
Merlinwell the letter Bethany Beth Beth-eneth I sound like I'm from Castile The Real Housewives you know these things I'm going to get into TikTok I think will they still steal my keystrokes if I do that does Guardian help with that probably not
Alexno there's no way to consume TikTok
MerlinI got a little crush on the depths of Wikipedia woman. And I think I'd like to see more things by her.
AlexYeah, but there's no funny. Yes, there's there is no way to use TikTok. Like there's no way to consume hashtag content on that not website, a platform in a way that hasn't been specifically designed for you. in a way that you probably don't want to see it.
MerlinI get that. I get that. I hate it. And the interface looks confusing. Every time I kid, well, you know, it's one of those things where like a lot of old people say, well, like, or people who are like, I'm getting off the, you know, the news thing. And like, if something happens, I'll hear about it. And that really is true a lot of the time. But when something, as you youth say, goes viral like this, like, and then when I do learn about it, that's when I realize how out of it I really am. But so, and watch my kid try to like, So the point being, I learn stuff through the kid, and I get to see good content through the kid.
Have you ever seen the thing where the guy from Driveshaft interviews Elijah Wood and asks him about wearing a wig? Have you ever seen that?
AlexNo.
MerlinOh, it's really funny. It's Lord of the Rings-related content, and it's really funny.
AlexOh, I was going to say, what era, Elijah Wood? But that is interesting.
MerlinI'll find it. I'll find it. Elijah Wood wigs, right under Jeff Goldblum.
Alexso do you like have i think the difference with tiktok though is that uh maybe not the high schoolers and under but i i've heard many people between the ages of 20 and 40 just be like oh fuck tiktok not not because of tiktok like it not even what people are making necessarily but because there's no way to watch hours and hours and hours of puppy videos
there's only guzzling right yes yes and and for me unfortunately that's also how the twitter uh the the native twitter client is for me i can only it's like the people who i like like me i don't really drink i do binge drink like once or twice a year but like i i don't really enjoy drinking because why just have one sip no no no you need to be that's why you don't use the web app is because you're drinking uh no no i i uh i use tweet bot at my oh actually i use a
spring on my desktop spring which is definitely a thing it's a it's a nice it's a nice new twitter
Merlinapp but oh i looked at aviary you're telling me there's an app called spring yeah down under Elijah Wood Wigs. I'm writing down Spring. And it
Alexlets you actually, in a similar way, that Twitterific lets you know if something is a poll. So does Spring. But it's a little bit easier to see. I don't know. It's fun. They have templates and themes. I like
Merlinthat bullshit. I will look at Spring.
AlexBut I am really...
MerlinYou're dissuading me. You're telling me if I hear what you're saying. You're saying to me, you're saying to your pal Merlin,
Alexhey don't get on get on oh no don't you have a you have a gift you have a you have a child who is willing to show you the things that are relevant and to tell you why they are relevant you don't need to listen to a weekly podcast like i do and you don't need to oh is it called
Merlinsomething like flame sisters or no no no no it's is it one of those is it one of those let's talk about memes shows i think what's holding us together is that we each don't know about
Alexdifferent things and that helps i can't you mean the human experience i don't understand
MerlinAll right. Listen, this is not going to be one of those six hour days, Alex. We can't.
AlexNo, no, it can't be. It can't be because I got good sleep, but not much of it.
MerlinLet me make sure we're not leaving any bones on the plate here real quick. Oh, shit, dog. Maybe we can talk about the show. But like the other the other big thing we both arrived at independently was that Invisibilia episode on power. Oh, we both. Yes. Like, well, I had I'd made a toot about it. and then you sent it to me
Alexand I'm
Merlinman look at that thing when I'm doing the brain explosion thing with my hand
Alexit really got me thinking
Merlinreally? oh shit dog did you look at the thing I put on the internet?
Alexactually yes
MerlinI think I retweeted it I was really pandering to you let me find one when I was pandering to you
Alexoh real quick do you know about the
Merlinbirds aren't real campaign oh sorry yes i you you did talk about it before and there was a so
Alexand this is the other oh yeah so do your merm what's your merm the way that most media covers trends and challenges on the internet is mostly and i i i think what the the uh lamestream media calls is called bad faith like none of it is to figure out why either why it's happening or why
Merlinit's interesting it's just look at these dumb like point and laugh america's funny stone videos type
Alexi'm like it's it's it's as if they're reporting on trump you know it's like well if you're gonna point at it like at least i don't know like if if you're gonna make a mean fat joke at least Just make it a funny fat joke. I don't know.
MerlinIt's so different than like when the whole like, you know, don't throw me in the briar patch thing where people retweet ding-a-lings. It's like, well, you're still like doing ding-a-ling amplification, dude.
AlexYes. If you're gonna, like, come on, Dave Chappelle, you're gonna be transphobic. Just make original transphobic jokes. But there was a campaign called Birds Aren't Real. And this kid decided to just wait.
MerlinStarted out straight up. Started as a prank, right? Like as a bit. Not even a prank.
Alexbut as like a made up thing just a made up thing okay yes and it was full on uh like i am a conspiracy theorist uh well no he didn't he's like all right everybody birds aren't real we all know birds aren't real they are drones made to watch us and uh tons of people got in on the bit right away and uh pretty much i i think there were zero people um who thought it was real or at least zero people who thought believed the conspiracy i should say many people thought
that this was a real conspiracy theory that young people believed and mostly i'm sorry i gotta follow
Merlinyour angles on this um so there were there were certainly people who saw it and went haha like this is a funny bit yeah like we're making up a fake thing then then there were people who like with tide pods were like these kids today that kind of thing yes but then it was it was reported
Alexon yeah yeah well it was no but it was reported on as if it was cute like a gen z q it on it was hilarious and most of it has been like redacted and taken down aren't there people who believed
Merlinit no i thought there were people that couldn't be dissuaded did i buy into big media i think you
Alexdid you you're the failing merlin man the the believe me i know there wasn't i think a single I'm like maybe a couple dealings on Twitter who were like, oh, oh, yes, drones. But, you know, they believe plastic bags are drones, which, you know, American Beauty did a number.
MerlinThat's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen in my life. To this day, when a plastic bag is blowing. Now we don't even say anymore. Now we just laugh because because from the time ever since 1999, my wife and I would both. Anytime we saw a plastic bag blowing around, we go, that's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. The stupid fucking movie.
AlexIt's such bad.
MerlinBoy, talk about not aged well. Woof.
AlexNo, no. I mean, Kevin, even take Kevin Spacey out of the equation.
MerlinWell, Annette Bening got canceled since then.
AlexThat's me jacking off in the shower. Ha ha ha ha ha. I'm gay. Ha ha ha ha ha. Is he French? Yeah, he's a French homophobe, I guess.
MerlinNot a Francophile, but a homophobe. I'm a philophobe. I just don't like people who like things. All right, do you want to do the challenge?
AlexOh, anyway, the kid got... Oh, fuck, I'm sorry. Wait, wait, wait. The climax of it, I guess, because it kind of petered out, but no one will admit that it was a bit... A bunch of people went to protest outside of Twitter saying that they were censoring their tweets. They weren't censoring their tweets. They just thought it was funny. and uh so people thought it was real and i thought it was just really really wholesome that the only people who believed it were uh like just craven reporters who love just
Merlinyou can do that with anything you can do that with anything absurd right and there will be people who believe that other people like there are people who believe that some people think the earth is flat for example didn't max at one point want to get somebody on the show who was a flat earther.
AlexOh, yeah. We talked about that a lot, but we can't ever have a flat earther on the show because they will run circles around us about why the earth isn't flat.
MerlinLook at people wanting to talk about The Bachelor.
AlexThe, oh my God.
Speaker AYou're never going to let that one go. Oh.
AlexChallenge.
MerlinAre you an owl? Who? I'm an owl now.
AlexOh, do it again. Do it again.
MerlinThe singing part or just a hoo-hoo?
AlexEither, either.
MerlinOkay, I'll start with the same.
Speaker AOoh, ooh, ooh.
MerlinWell, I sound kind of like that Hawaiian singer guy. Ooh, ooh, ooh. Kind of like that. But then I can also go, ooh, ooh.
AlexI was actually going to say you sounded a little bit like the guy from The Shins at the beginning of New Slang.
Speaker ADo, do, do.
MerlinDifferent key.
Speaker ADo, do, do, do, do, do, do, do. Oh, I love it.
MerlinAh, such a good song.
Speaker AAh, such a good song.
MerlinYou know, there's a later one. I remember I was listening to this on the morning I pushed that poor woman. We were in Michigan, and I got some shins that I hadn't heard came up in a release radar or maybe a, it must have been Discover Weekly. And it was a shins record, and it was really good, and I hadn't heard it. It was just what I needed, just what I needed.
AlexOh, God, this is what, mmm. here is my old man thing is I'm like, Spotify. Rightfully so, though, I think. You're a title guy.
I'm entitled? Entitled? What?
MerlinPrivileged. It's called Privileged. It's their lossless streaming network by Jay-Z. Am I allowed to say that?
AlexNo. Oh, God. I see what you know. Well, I mean, honestly, Apple Music doesn't stream lossless half the time.
MerlinOh my god, it's such garbage. It's such garbage. I wanted to listen to a My Chemical Romance album this morning, Like a Gentleman, and oh my god, even or especially, I mean, like, where is it the worst? Well, you know, they're all the worst, including Apple TV. It's so bad. I feel like John Syracuse. I'm sitting there like, you have so much. This content is not authorized. Oh, yeah. Well, but there's no way that you can put controls anywhere. I need to press a button to see what the controls available even are.
And then it's a bunch of like round-recked buttons in a row, like in rows and rows and rows. Ugh, terrible. I'm not okay. I trust you. Ha ha ha! You played with me in the space. challenge this week is uh mostly alex's alex is going to run this this uh this game um was obsidian
Alexi remember craft being a challenge craft was a challenge craft i think is not the origin of the
Merlinwisdom document but the first was the origin of the wisdom document but what i'm trying to ask you after the comma the implied comma was obsidian ever a challenge here i don't remember it was i
Alexthink but it it was peanut buttered i think because you were pushing that old woman um that
Merlinyou didn't really get into it i don't know i know i think i think you're you're deeply confused but But the challenge this week was to... Forever and always. Because I knew Alexandra couldn't shut their whore mouth about Obsidian. You're always on with the Obsidian. I still understand. But I liked it. I paid for a subscription and the syncing and all the things. And I installed lots of plugins. And I thought it was really cool. But it's like the thing we need a name for. I didn't stop watching a TV show out of any malice. It's just other things happened.
And I just found myself using other things. And so the challenge this week was to use Obsidian again. And it was an opportunity for you to talk about it, for me to learn, see what's new with it, and you can extol the virtues.
AlexAnd I completely peanut buttered because at the end of last week's after show, we're like, oh, yeah. Or rather, you're like, you should come up with something interesting for us to do with it. I did ask what you did. And I said, let me think about it. Well, and I did think about it. I couldn't really think of anything that would be fun for us to do. Send me the URI thing.
MerlinThat looks cool. The hook-like ability.
AlexThat looks cool. Yes, yes. The whole thing with Obsidian is, I should say, it has been the new hotness for the past couple of years in the note-taking or PKM space, as we have to call it now. And it is very similar. I'm sorry. It was initially compared to—
MerlinIt's a text editor that does stuff.
AlexIt is. Okay.
MerlinWell, it's a MacGuffin. But to describe something as the new hotness does not get at the fact it's a MacGuffin. And that's why they have .md for their domain?
Alexcould i marlin mann can i finish i'm being silenced i would love to know if you can finish
Merlinand i would give you way more opportunities i'll give you all the runway you want do you want me
Alexdo that thing where i don't talk for a while i'll do it let me let me just let me just try to hit the bean for for a while more there was a big hubbub about notion of a while back which is
Speaker ANo sense to anybody who's not fucked up and weird.
AlexYes, it does. Who do you think listens to this show?
MerlinIs there a normal person who doesn't? I don't know. They're crushing up and snorting Notion.
AlexIs there a person who, I wonder, I swear to God, I wonder if there is a single person who listens to this show. Alex, I don't know what you're talking about. You don't know what Notion is?
Speaker AI do know what Notion is.
MerlinIt's like craft for the Enterprise.
AlexI land on their pages. No, it's not. It's not. It's not. Oh, my gosh. You are not in the PKM space.
MerlinYou're not.
AlexGet out of here.
MerlinYou're really not. I was in the PKM space before you bled.
AlexI know. No, but you're. I was Devin thinking when you weren't thinking at all. You're out of the game. Piece of shit. You're out of the game. Are you familiar with Rome? Oh, what game? There's no game to be out of. I can Rome if I want to.
MerlinBut what I'm trying to say to you is sometimes when I land on a page and I see it's got emoji on it.
AlexDo you know that Onan's coming? He's coming for you. He's going to take away your notes.
MerlinI love how affectionate he is with his boyfriend. I think it's sweet.
AlexOh my God. It's so cute. Oh, no spoilers. But oh, and they keep showing it. Oh, anyway. Okay. What is important about Obsidian is that it is different. It is different from things like Rome. Why were people mad about Notion, Alex? No, they weren't mad. They were upset, like many people, or disappointed that it was hard to get things into and out of Notion quickly
because it was a web-based app. And similar to when a lot of us were disappointed with Evernote as it changed into a million different things. But almost everyone I know who isn't like a nerdy nerd nerd, everyone I know who doesn't listen to the show basically. Yeah, yeah. I should say like five people I know.
MerlinIs that include people in California?
AlexI mean, he's a big iPhone guy. He finally switched over to a couple years ago. He stopped with the button and was like, I'm not like this idea.
MerlinStopping with the button. And he loves Notion and porcelain.
AlexNo, he's a big spreadsheets guy. Why am I talking about this? Okay.
MerlinBecause you love him very much.
AlexI do. I love them very much.
MerlinHe collects pennies.
AlexI don't know why.
MerlinWell, I mean, probably so he can have money. not everybody just oh i got a cord i don't need cash i gotta get all my money's in notion it's the new new hotness here i uh here's here is something
Alexthat i'm going i'm going to do a simile perhaps um uh uh and obsidian is to notion as N.V.Alt is to Evernote in terms of the eras of note-taking. Does that vaguely make sense? Because Obsidian, don't make a noise.
MerlinNo, someone's sawing. Someone has just started operating what sounds like a very powerful saw.
AlexOh, well, well, well, I'll allow it.
MerlinDo you want me to try and mute if I can?
AlexNo, no. I thought that was funny. I thought you were making a really funny noise.
MerlinMerlin, why are you making that noise?
AlexI thought it was just a really, really long exhale.
MerlinI was impressed. You really didn't sleep, did you? You have a velociraptor.
AlexPick up the bed and saw you find your feet. Obsidian, unlike a number of note-taking apps people use, like uh like notion rome research evernote uh um even things like air table it is all based around markdown notes which i think at least if you've listened to two episodes of this show i'm talking to the audience now i think hey pair of pals uh you know that i have been horny for markdown
since I knew what the word horny was. And the beauty of Obsidian is that it's actually not a very pretty app because it's just Markdown. The whole thing runs via Markdown and plain text. Like there's a ton of fancy code bullshit you can do. There's a ton of like-
MerlinMany, many extensions.
AlexThere's so many extensions and the program itself is not open. like the the app obsidian is not open source but all of the extensions are open source which um means you can fuck around and find out as we now say and the reason that i got into obsidian was because you know i again horny for for plain text and just wanted to try it out but then i realized oh it will just bring in my decade plus of plain text files and I immediately started you can
immediately start playing with linking backlinking which is basically like wiki style linking so So what I did was, you know, command F Merlin and then highlight, do double bracket, select all. And now there are like all of my links to various Merlin man notes over the year can now be searched via that one link.
It is very hard to explain backlinking. and I've watched hours and hours of people do it and I still cannot. I just, it's hard to understand other than it's like Wikipedia.
MerlinOkay, the saw is not going away. I, you didn't ask, but I'm going to take a cut at this. It is using Markdown files as a building block for lots of different things and having all the extensibility come in through things like plugins and relationships. And so like, they're very big on things. Like if you go to the documentation area of their site, which appears to be done in Obsidian, you get a lot of like, oh, there's a map of this and here's connections to this. And but what's neat is like so all that functionality of showing you relationships with things and allowing things like Wikilinks, like so much of that is baked in.
But then there's there's a lot of plugins. And that's why I say, you told me it's not just a text editor, which I guess it's not just, but as somebody who's been using Visual Studio Code a lot the last few months, it was instantly recognizable as very similar that way, all the way down to the way you can split windows and stuff like that. It really kind of feels like an IDE in that way. But yeah, there's a lot baked right into it that's really, really swell.
Alexi when i was like it's it's not just a text header yes it you can do the uh as i called it fancy code stuff um but it's big on also the zettelkasten method of note taking uh obsidian is to zettelkasten as omni focus is to getting things done that i bet
MerlinIt's starting to feel a lot like a trending topic right now.
AlexI'm doing like an AP test.
MerlinGleap Gleap is to meet Zoop.
AlexOh, God.
MerlinPerhaps this analogy will be useful for you.
AlexI, I, a lot of the folks who use Obsidian are either like big automation note-taking nerds or academics, like people who have a need for a well need or they want all of their information in one place
Merlini think i think john dickinson has an interest in that he's always interested in these kinds of things and like we've talked about i think you've talked about before like steven berlin johnson has written about back in the day about back in the 43 folders days he was writing about how he uses Devin think to write his books. Lots of people like, you know, people have systems. And I think one reason these, I don't mean disparaging at all, but one reason they catch on is because they are digital systems that you can go out and kind of get started with. It's easier to talk about than
a paper folder system or something like that. You know, part of it is, is you can hear about
Alexthis and five minutes later, be playing with it with your own data. Which is why I think it is more fun than something like Evernote or I mean I haven't used it in so long I couldn't even say
Merlinright now but I I know I I was very smitten um with it uh in the time I was using it and why do I associate this so closely with craft because it was the week I pushed the poor woman I was in the disgusting room uh in Rhode Island and and I I did but I remember I must have been playing with obsidian at all i'm not going to go back and look but it must have been around the same time but no just for what it's worth like obsidian is is really cool and as go all in
systems go this one is both powerful and worth taking a big swing at because like you've just described you can get your stuff in and out real easy like as i discovered i forgot that i had because again i haven't let's say six months at least right i hadn't opened it and i forgot that that like all my text files are in there. So everything I had in my slash elements folder shows up in there. And, but they're all just, they're just text files and they don't get perturbed. And of all the text editors I had open,
if you prefer the things that edit text files, of all the things that I had opened, it was Ulysses or IA Writer was the one that did just a slight bit of very, very intelligent, like fixing to what you're looking at. Like, like for example, when you open something in Ulysses, it does that little at symbol thing at the top to let you know what the file name is, which I think is kind of cool. But like, but that's the beauty as with, we referenced this at the top, but like as with calendar programs, I mean, all those events, that sync is knock on wood,
mostly a solved problem for calendars. And they've been a mostly solved problem for text files for a while. And it's just, I don't know. I mean, like I'll beat this to death. Anytime you can take .m, totally portable, tiny .md files and make a big pal
Alexus out of that i i want to know i want to know more i do think that i uh peanut buttered on this in that i didn't i think entice you with something interesting enough don't worry about
Merlinit and no i still play with it i still play with it really enjoyed it okay sorry i'm sorry i'm sorry
Alexno we we have a separate challenge which is the zaholkansen like a challenge which is I am just very interested in the, oh God, I, I, I took the peaky.
MerlinDatacosting is a way to do a personal knowledge management system where everything is prepended by a time date stamp that enables you to, to run your whole life out of this thing. If you choose to, almost the way some people use, like have run their life out of Emacs, like .el files in the past. Like you could you could have like the equivalent of like an Uber document, you know, in some ways or like, you know, because you can do transclusion also. You know, the thing where you include files and files.
AlexI see I'm not I'm not sure I I haven't read the book. it's on the way um because that sounds sort of like my understanding of it from a just a pure like i get creative stances is it is really just getting having every single note or and especially every single text file as its own idea or thought.
MerlinWhich I think, I can't promise you that this was a philosophical public thing, but when, what was his name, Zachary, or whoever first came up with notational velocity. Like, I think from the beginning, notational velocity, which became NBLT and other things, but notational velocity started out as like, hey, those days of having to have all these different like what I would call like a running file like those days could be over if you chose like you should feel and I still feel like this with NBL I still feel like this with drafts
I feel no admonition about I mean this little place where I'm typing it could be the most important thing I'm ever gonna do forever or it could be the most ephemeral thing now someone's knocking at my door marker
Alexthat was adorable whatever just happened what did you hear yeah uh some some of it i like my
Merlinlandlord my i love my landlord new fire extinguisher for me oh good oh hooray have you ever had to use one no and i keep wanting to practice i keep thinking we should go out in the yard the same way that you learn to you know there's a lot of people who are super into guns that like have not fired a gun very much without air protection on just so you know guys it's a lot a lot louder than it seems i feel like we should practice burn one off you know i'm saying i think we should the family should go to the yard and and squirt the extinguisher that's my landlord he's
really cool and he says it sounds like the sawing is you know is is mostly over so okay zettelkasten there's a book about that huh i am transposing two germans in my head i think um leah and christian and maybe another i'm confusing different people but is there a book that you think looks good
Alexabout this it sounds like you you do think that the one that's been recommended to me over and over is how to take uh smart notes but a book that i read this week that i think i like but don't i i haven't thought about it enough i just finished how to take smart notes one simple
Merlintechnique to boost writing learning and thinking uh yes yes but the book how to take smart notes
Alexin obsidian uh yeah there's that one's fine it's in kindle unlimited it's it's fine but i read um how to build a second brain this week and at first i thought it was going to be very uh like um i i don't know uh tim ferrissey you know i i knew as soon as you started hemming i knew what you
Merlinmeant yeah d yeah yeah like there's gonna be one of those like i mean there's a million ways it could be a terrible book how to build a second brain but you ended up liking it more than you
Alexexpected i tiago forte or carolyn cooper no building a second brain by uh a guy with an yes tiago forte um and he is a big pkm guy and it's actually like one of the og uh i don't want say one of the og evernote guys like the og um uh like modern evernote guy have you heard the
note-taking uh i i guess description or note-taking categories of architect guardy uh gardener and
Merlinlibrarian no but that's that you know i love like there's that model of creativity i love that It involves people too. So I'm very into stuff like this. Gardner. So I like that one that the Roger Von Eck guy from Menlo has that thing. I remember Max scoffed at this, and you probably scoffed at it. But I read this book about creativity he wrote in the 90s that was really good. And he talks about thinking of the artistic or creative process as involving four roles.
And they do tend to work in order, and they work with and against each other. Like you've got an explorer, an artist, a judge, and a warrior.
And so like the explorer, and each one has like a specific thing. Your job is to go find stuff for the explorer, right? The artist figure out what I can make out of this. Judge decides, you know, is this a thing we want to pursue? And the warrior then implements it. But at any point, you can go back one step too. Judge says, hey, no, let's kick this back to the artist. The artist says, no, let's kick this back to the explorer. I love models like that. But you're not talking about a process of three parts. No, no. It's three, the garden variety note takers.
AlexYes, different sort of- What are they? Gardener? Right, right. Yes, gardener, architect, and librarian. Some people also include student as one of them.
Speaker AOkay.
AlexSo, yeah, this guy, he's got his courses and all that. I don't know. it's one of those things though where I got the vibe that he's a lot less gross um mostly because a lot of his stuff is available for free and not like three hundred dollars to watch what is essentially a YouTube video and uh I've been reading this because now I have started building my PKM but trying to do it in just Obsidian and Devon think because I no longer need to have
a million things in Dropbox and in uh Google Docs and and I I know I no longer need a million of those things to that I have to pull up at a moment's notice whereas when I was in in school basically every everything everything everything being in uh NvAlt or eventually NvAltra uh I was considered the person who like seemed very very smart but i wasn't i just wrote everything down
Merlinor to to i i'm amazing how writing things down can make a person smarter i'm not kidding yeah i i just uh a lot of people are pretty sure they're really smart but they don't write things down
Alexand then pretty soon they answer smart oh you know what i was this thing i was the fast information person because i ocr'd a ton of our uh like notes and shit that's how i got us the wife i think of you as a smart information person that's a that's a callback the the a smart information person a smart and fast smart and fast like conya sorry yay oh yay um i'm gonna go by may just at me
Merlinit's so it's so sad i don't but remember i told you i told my family he's an example of a guy who's fast but not smart just like me yeah and then and then you yelled at me on the uh on the
AlexI did not. How do you yell over? No, wait, wait. Okay. We're going to. I'm getting out my receipts right now. Shuffle, shuffle, shuffle.
MerlinOh, no, please don't. Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. I just said. No, I will not accept your compliment. Oh, you're going to that. Oh, sure. Oh, God. Look at all that water. Oof. Okay. A lot of water on the floor.
AlexI just said a dummy couldn't make this. and I sent you my beautiful dark twisted fantasy via Apple Music and then I tried to play that album over Apple Music like six times and then eventually just listened to it on Spotify and you called it a stunning record but yeah, boo Spotify I don't know, you started it it's so bad I hate it I'm just joining you
MerlinI'm joining your bit trying to match your energy
Alexboo his da doi and then I said a da doi
Merlinthat was adorable
AlexI want to make a cartoon of you saying
Merlinto doi
Alexto doi oh that's a bit has been a bit in my household for a decade I think yep oh god I have been with Matchy for a decade
Merlinis that your household version of no shit Sherlock
Alexoh we we've had to phase that out because there are children around and for some reason I still I think it's cute that their parents don't want them to swear like I don't have an opinion on that and now i understand yeah but like you don't want to be the one who's deciding yeah i i don't want to yeah i don't want to be known as the fuck aunt um or uncle the fuck aunt
Speaker Ayeah i'm the fuck i'm the fucking uncle you see what the rest of these cock smokers are doing with their pkms it's fucking ridiculous it's like a big bag of anuses oh i see what you did there
Alexuh anyway i said a dummy couldn't make this referring to my beautiful dark twisted fantasy and you said no one man should have all that then and then i said a dummy couldn't make this and then i linked to wisdom slash wisdom.md at master merlin man slash wisdom which is your wisdom project on github oh that's funny i see what you did because you are smart and fast yeah but pull
Merlinup in the automobile gangster with the bad bitch that come from sri lanka oh god it's so good so Oh, good.
AlexI know he's not okay. I hope he's okay.
MerlinI know. She's getting 50,000 for her verses.
AlexI don't know the album that well to understand those references.
MerlinWhat you're going to hear is Rick Ross and Jay-Z, amongst others, being taken to school by Nicki Minaj, who does one of the greatest. Oh, yeah. Not just a verse, but like it goes. It's like, you know, it's what do you say? it's up there with like Wu-Tang's you know triumph it's like
Alexyeah oh god I think that was one of not the first time but one of the first time people took Nicki Minaj seriously as a rapper she was pretty fresh on the scene right yeah yeah and she was like
Merlinit was before the whole dust up with the New York radio station that I heard a podcast about right
Alexthe yeah I don't I cannot keep again I'm not cool so I can't keep track of the cool music drama and I can't keep a track of the TikTok
Merlindrama you could snort in all your dishes you'd be a lot better off. I compost, so I snort paper plates.
AlexI eat a lot of paper. Dad.
MerlinDad. That's not funny. It's not even a joke.
so tiago forte gardeners and you're building your your your zettel constant uh no i i'm i'm very
Alexmuch um a when i have been properly medicated i'm very much a librarian note taker but more frequently I tend to be a gardener which is just you know spew the notes everywhere just a big old fire hose of blah blahs and that's why drafts is so important to me and why text still starts there um but they oh man um Mr. Turtle has amazing integrations with Obsidian
in Evernote and wait no uh actions actions from drafts to obsidian now you pointed to a thought
Merlinasylum thing I've got a bunch of their like well I've got their super structure thing I got the one where there's like a whole action set just for running the action set yeah there's a little
AlexOS that yeah oh my god it's fucking crazy so cool but um I did you do anything in particular with obsidian or did you just like play play around um i tried a couple things um let's see
Merlinwhat did i do i i opened it up you know i just let's see how do i put this okay so not that you the listener needs to know this but i'm really i really like text files and i particularly like markdown files and it's like how i've been running my life since according to my gmail 2003 was uh the first time i emailed gruber one time we had a small uh not an argument but
Alexbut was it about how markdown should should be yeah it was about how markdown should do what
Merlindean does with humane or with um with uh what was dean's one called humane text or i do not remember the one dean from textism did and i was like i think it would make a lot of sense if uh you do what Dean does and like you do I think you know I always thought his two underscores or two asterisks for for strong and one asterisk or one underscore for emphasis I thought it was confusing
and he basically said he didn't say this but he basically said well if you love Dean so much why bunch of gay marian and um but no the first i just checked a minute ago the first email i ever sent him was just to give him a heads up that there was unrendered markdown in his rssv 2003 um so anyway i really do uh i love um i love markdown a lot and i love text editors a lot and so which you probably already know but like for example like this brings together several of my little sort of mini trends you know which it's just this is just a rat king of different stuff
like learning GitHub kind of in conjunction with putting the document up there and like learning enough about Git to be dangerous, you know, by which I mean like just using an app. I'm not going to do the command line stuff.
I'm about to make a branch, I think. I'm feeling like I'm ready for a branch.
Speaker AOoh.
MerlinThat's very exciting.
Speaker ABaby's first branch.
MerlinSo things apropos of, gosh, I'm so sorry if this doesn't make any sense. I realize this all just sounds like a bunch of made-up words.
Alexbut Merlin I tried to explain backlinks nothing you could say right now because I don't know what
Merlinit means it's okay okay okay but like I'm trying the thing I'm trying to get out of the way is the big picture part of like text text files are a big part of my life like what I do like they have been for a long time and you know really starting I want to say in some ways with simple note was when I first started getting more slightly looking at the direction of going all in on syncable text files um and um and but like it's hard to explain because the Venn diagram for this is so complicated I'm not sure I could even zettelcast it but um uh but but like the the wisdom project thing touches
on Git and GitHub and those apps. And GitHub touches on VS Code, even though all editors are all doing different things, touches on that. But other things like, oh, yeah, Cockamamie, my Blot site that I'm still fiddling around with. Like that, again, to do that, that's a Dropbox-based thing. but I do use VS code, VS code workspaces, you know, to keep all that, um, tied together.
But, um, so like, I'm already like pretty into all this different stuff. My test project, I went in not even looking, but my first thought was, um, I eventually want to figure out how to export this project of mine. Like, like, how do I put this? So, so there's a bunch of content, if you like, content stuff there's a bunch of stuff and like one of my goals from the beginning mostly has been at some point whatever this whatever the state of this thing is you know eventually someday with
tags and whatnot you can make your own custom book but in the meantime before that i'd like people to be able to get a moby or an epub of it and before it's an evolving document that's available on the download like with the latest changes i thought it would be nice my goal for this project in sum was can i use obsidian well i put it this way with the tools that are available including obsidian what's the best slash easiest slash prettiest slash most effective way i don't know those are slashes they're really more like pipes but like but pipe way to to generate
an epub and so i downloaded some plugins for that i did not have luck with it because i think i wasn't doing enough things and then i i had to i had to install pandoc which i had in an old place I had to put Pandoc in a new place and blah, blah, blah, blah.
AlexWhat, what's that? I will put it in notes.
MerlinOh, please. I'll actually go right now. P A N D S D S E.
AlexPandoc.
MerlinIt's kind of like a Babelfish almost. It's like,
AlexHoly shit. Holy shit.
MerlinYeah. And there's a million ways to run it. And now, nowadays there are many different kinds of like rappers and interactions for it. So where you see stuff, like for example, in, I always get confused about whether it's in NVLT or Marked. It's probably in Marked where you can go in and say a custom processor. So if you want to say do this in discount or do this in blah blah, like use this installation of multi-markdown. Like if you've got your own, rolled your own sort of not branch, but like if you've whatever it is. Anyway, so Pandoc is this like turn anything into
anything system. I first learned about it because of Markdown. But it's not just like Markdown to HTML and back. It's like it's all kinds of stuff. And I mean, it feels like it shades into something almost like LaTeX where like there's just so many ways that you can deal with this and munge it around. And so, yeah, that was my goal. And so I did not peanut butter, but I also did not have surpassing success with it. Closest I got on a first blush without using PDFs as an intermediary. Was I clear about what I'm trying to do here?
Take my 300 lines of dumb advice and make it into an EPUB, right?
Speaker AYes.
MerlinThere's different ways to do that. And the one I ended up doing and filling with last night is I just used Ulysses, which makes it really easy. They've got different styles, pre-existing styles you can apply. I know there are other ways, and a lot of this I do inside of Calibre because I'm going to want to make it look my way anyhow eventually.
Speaker ACalibre.
MerlinThat was my goal. Calibre. Let me just guess. Hang on. I'm feeling it. There's been an update of Calibre and two plug-in updates, I feel like. Every time I open it, I'm just always... That and Music Brain Picard are two apps that I'm just constantly updating.
Oh, oh, speaking of Picard, have you been listening to the McGruff two-parter? Yes, have I ever. I got the album.
AlexYes, fuck yes.
MerlinI got, and I corrected all the metadata with Picard. Beep, boop, beep, boop. Oh, look at you. The song's bang, especially that Steely Dan one.
Speaker AIt's really good.
AlexYeah.
MerlinWe'll put it in notes. Put it in show notes. So anyway, that was my goal, and I regret nothing. It was really fun. Some on Monday, but mostly, honestly, last night. Like, opening this one, I made a, I basically just copied, I duplicated, cloned, whatever you want to call it. My, you know, current, like, you know, text file of all the stuff that's up on GitHub. hub and then I thought I'll just play with this in different places and that's what got me down this rabbit hole of like to get you back to your beloved yaml that's where I was trying different
Alexthings and just seeing what no it's yaml's still getting to know I'm still getting to know I'm
Merlinwith you and but it was fun uh again to forgive my saying text editor to have this one.md document open in Visual Studio Code and Obsidian and IA Writer and Ulysses, and at one point also BBEdit.
It was so neat to have that open in all those places. And by virtue of the fact that it was sitting in the correct place in the Dropbox folder, the changes that I made to the YAML would be reflected in all those different places. And it was interesting to me to see, like, which YAML tags would work in which places. Some things work on blot and not others. The thing I was trying to say to you earlier that I made a real soup of trying to explain this to you is that, you know, you can do a key value pair in YAML and say, like, foo is bar or, you know, baz is bat or whatever.
Or put differently, key1, colon, Alex. Key2, Chicago, et cetera. And then what's neat is this is in multi-markdown, and it's also handled correctly in marked. So now further down, you get a variable. So you just create a key value pair where key equals Alex. So now if you have open and closed brackets, and in the middle you do, I think, percent sign key or key one, then when it's rendered, it says Alex there.
AlexOh, that's a lot.
MerlinThat is very cool. You don't need no database or nothing. It's doing all that for you, which I think is, I think that's a really fascinating idea. Like, it's one thing to say, like, hey, guess what, guys? There's more to meta tags than SEO in this case. Because, like, in another era, another time, I would have thought of the kinds of things I'd put in, you know, meta, meta, not, I mean, different kinds of meta tags, not just keywords. But, you know, all the stuff you put in the sort of formatter up in the head of the document. But you can actually, like, use that for stuff without being, like, a fancy developer.
and it was just interesting to see like where that worked and where it didn't and uh this was very very good for me and and really how talking to you today is good too because i even though i am in a way i'm sure you can understand or appreciate i'm very resistant to like all in big systems i'm definitely curious at least about keeping keeping abreast of like what the different things can do so that was good for me i'm learning you know i learned a lot from you today the oh no
Alexi don't think i don't think you did but that is that is okay i love you again again again i love
Merlinyou again again we're not done well it could be done we could be done um oh yeah so anything else like as far as this uh this particular thing like so like uh yeah i'm like the jokes left the room i um i was curious about like and i'm not going to be that guy and go like well is your life better know but like it there's a part of me it's like oh so like could you explain to me and the listeners like what are some benefits you've seen out of using text files in obsidian is it just that
knowing that you can get it in and out or have there been things that are unique to obsidian that might make it attractive let's do the 43 folders on this who is this for who is this not for i think that who it's not for is almost anybody who's normal but like if you're if you're a little bit of a geek what flavor of geek would find uh obsidian useful right right now a a mark a mark
Alexdown merc what merc down uh uh yes you sound like yay when he had his jaw wired shut you know that song through the wire you wear that song oh no hmm do you know the song through the wire on his
Merlinfirst album because he broke his jaw he'd had surgery and his jaw was wired shut so he did a did a song called through the wire and he did it with his and he does it like this and you just sounded like I'm a little bit. Was that racist?
AlexI don't know. If there's a race of people who enjoy dental repair, I don't know.
MerlinNo one man should have all that power.
AlexI, the reason... The reason... I haven't walked in a minute. The one downfall of... Such a good record. It's such a good...
MerlinYou know he's from Chicago. Did you know that?
AlexHe is not from Chicago. is did you know that he's not from chicago i he's main thing is oh god it's getting so hard for all of his friends to defend him and like i get it okay they're doing fine they're really they're
Merlinstill getting out there i'm more worried about his fake children who are sexualizing his own
Alexreal children that may or may not be there played by actors oh i i mental illness is rough um the big downfall of text files obviously is it's difficult to pair it with media or at least for me i'm always like it will wait uh and typically i when i'm referencing media i just link to something on the web but with obsidian you can link to things in the your obsidian folder structure
Merlinthis is your fancy uri thing right uh it's not a callback but it's like that it's a url that does
Alexstuff that we're talking about here yeah so you can just link to basically anything in this big folder structure and that has that's kind of what i've been doing especially because the i do that
Merlinall the time even though i don't use it i copy they differ of course between nvl and drafts but like i'm doing that all the time and i paste that into task paper so like if my thing like right now my next thing on my list is to do ad reads for this week's reconcilable differences and you know in that case it's just an http you know link paste it in but i love that i can say like oh you know, Junior's birthday is coming up and that's a link, you know, somewhere else on my,
Alexon my Mac that works. The, and most people, you know, probably should just use Apple notes or, you know, if you're a next level nerd, that notion is great, but I really like having all of it as, you know as a pdf or or as a um uh like uh what am i saying oh um i've put ebooks in here it's just nice to have it so then i can get that file and just give it to someone devon devon think part
is that you use that more as a reference manager then so yes that i'm trying to sort of get devon
Merlinthing and remember that's totally that's totally cromulent if you want to put food at bib up in there you can have bibliographies that works on blot i think that will work on almost everything it is like if you point it to a dot bib file you can have your site work cited or whatever
Alexand that's what is so exciting for me because i have just so so many pdfs and like papers i've
MerlinI spent years, ever since I worked on the God for a Second book that I didn't finish, through this month, I'm still always looking at citations, bookends, all the different ones, bibliography.com. There's all these different ones where it's like, you know, I would spend $200 a year on this if it really was easy to use and would do stuff like Markdown. I get why it's rich text. That's what most people who have bibliographies use, right? Like that's close enough to text, .txt text, right?
But like, yeah, I mean, like I would love to have a master list, almost like Delicious Library. I wish I had like a master list.
AlexR.I.P.
MerlinI know, so good. I wish I had a master list of, you know, books, you know, websites of the stuff that, you know, refers to the stuff that I do and make that easy to then cite and incorporate in all those places, which sounds like a weird, like, what are you worried about, kid? You did your BA, you know, over 30 years ago. Why do you need that? Well, I still think it's really cool. My kid just did a presentation. Oh, it's so goddamn good. Oh, my God. The kid's going to get into AP.
So the kid did this amazing environmental science thing on the biomes in New Zealand.
Speaker AOh, shit.
MerlinAnd included some really good Easter eggs. Like a really nice over-the-shoulder shot of Hector and Ricky looking at the mountains.
AlexOh, my God.
MerlinSo it's got Easter eggs in it. And there's so many people. The Beths. Did you hear the Beths' live album? They're fucking obsessed with birds.
AlexOh, my God.
MerlinThe 2020 Auckland concert. They're talking about who they voted for. New Zealand people are obsessed with birds. And I was like, hey, if you wanted to, this is my brain, not my kid's brain. And I was like, you could add that to your work cited. I think your teacher would probably think it's kind of cool that you cite, and I could show you if you want, like MLA-8, like here's how to do that. So why would I care about that if I'm not in school? Well, I'll answer my own straw man with another straw man. Shut up, Merlin. Shut up, Leonard.
Nobody even knows what you're talking about.
Speaker AI think that's neat.
MerlinBut what you're describing here, we don't have time to get into this, But I touched on this. I think the word is transclusion. But there's a thing, Brett, there's things that you can do with all kinds of different setups. But I'll just say this. Using NVL plus marked. Hello, Brett. And hello, Brett. You can do stuff like you ever do all caps TOC inside of braces.
AlexNo.
MerlinI think that's what it is. No. I need to double check it. But yeah. So that's in almost all my documents have a TOC in braces. And that generates all the H's become anchors. Oh, that's cool. It creates a table of contents inside Mark.
AlexThat is cool.
MerlinBut then you've got transclusion. And boy, go read his amazing documentation. But I think it's usually something like greater than, greater than, and then file name, like path. And so if you want to write a book and have it be in different chapters or different whatevers, like it can just live in all these different files. I don't know if this is making sense to a healthy person's mind. But if we take that original idea behind Zetokasten as we understand it today and notational velocity, like I should be able to have little scraps of paper everywhere and then be able to pull it together in the way that works for me.
And that's what stuff like the file transclusion and stuff like. But you can also do stuff like, I mean, have you spent much time with this where you can like, you know, there's different kinds of, you could say include this as a full HTML file, just the body. include this as like a source code? Like depending on, so the one I remember at memory service is greater than, greater than. So greater than, greater than foo.md means include that file in here. And that could be 10 different text files you reorder at will.
And when you look at it in marked or make it a PDF or whatever, you would never know that that's 10 different separate text files. So what does that have to do with any of this? Well, all this stuff works together. The idea of having a reference manager where there's a standardized way of citing, you know, Vonnegut comma 1966, like in sort of MLA days, stuff I know. Like that, the table of content stuff, the transclusion stuff, like your mind really starts to bubble with all the ways that you can be a shit.
I could have really pulled this off if I hadn't started a new page. where you can kind of be a gardener and an architect and a librarian and whatever else you do. Yes. All inside of a really system that is, once it's set up, is actually kind of hard to break.
AlexYes. It's so, it can get.
MerlinThis is hard to fuck up.
AlexIt can be so, so nimble. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
MerlinAnd all the parts connect together. Small pieces loosely joined, as they say.
AlexWho says that? Is that a thing?
MerlinThat's good. Just to be clear here, you scoffed at me because I was unaware that people were not grinding up porcelain and snorting it, but you've never heard the most widely known definition of Unix-like file systems being small pieces loosely joined.
AlexNo, I don't use Linux. I don't use Emacs.
MerlinThis is the year of Alex on the desktop. You didn't laugh. Got to keep going.
AlexNo, that was really funny.
MerlinYou fuck. No, I would like to end it. No, I'm not doing it.
AlexThat was really the fuck.
MerlinMadeline has not said thank you for the birthday wishes, just so you know, if you want to hold it against her. No, no, no, it's a belated. Well, you can still order big dumps to be delivered.
Speaker AMadeline, order big dumps. Can I ding now? Yes. You ready? Big dumps. Big dumps. So cute. He's got little crimps. Oh, my God.
MerlinCrimping, we call it.
Speaker ASo cute.
