AlexThis is Do By Friday, a weekly challenge podcast with Merlin Mann and Alex Cox. This week's challenge, eat at a pet store. Hello. Hello. I am here. I am centered. I am grounded. My body is filling with orange fluid as our hypnosis friend likes to say i don't know if i'm talking

to anybody no i don't like this oh wait oh no i'm muted i'm muted wait oh no i mean i deserve this for being late oh hello hello hi hi yes yes tell me if you can hear this no i heard a sniff i think

Merlinhey it's due by Friday

Alexsorry sorry I'm late

Merlinyou know a good time to update Stream Deck and try to make audio go into your very precious audio hijack setup is when you're waiting for your friend

Alexoh yeah I think you should install the beta while you're at it too right before recording

MerlinStream Deck 5 Stream Deck 5 did you get it?

Alexno No, no. Remember I had a cat chomp on the end of mine. And since I don't have the big, big boy, I have to have. It's backordered because all of the pod people were like, yeah, we like Stream Deck now. And I'm like, I use Stream Deck before. It was cool, guys, for streaming.

MerlinOK, hang on. Hang on. OK.

AlexNo, I want to hear about Stream Deck 5.

MerlinNo, no, no. OK, hang on, hang on, hang on. I hate to do this to you. I need to stop my call for a second I want to why are you so quiet is it my pre-PC

AlexI don't know

Merlintalk again

Alexhello it's me

MerlinI'm not groaning at you I'm groaning at your voice

AlexI mean most people do rightfully so

Merlinnow why are you like this let me close the loop back

AlexI don't know if this is the show are you going to pull a Nanette on me and say I can't make self-deprecating jokes. You know. Remember laughter.

MerlinYeah. And then she has another one. What's her second one? Todd or something? She has a second one.

AlexYeah. Yeah.

MerlinYeah.

AlexTodd.

MerlinOkay. I guess.

AlexIs this show Are You Go Good?

MerlinNo. Look. Look. I got a bass. And I've been recording.

AlexYou got a bass. And I've been doing things.

MerlinAnd it's so funny because, Alexandra, I was about to tell you that I am for once extremely happy with my whole setup.

Alexoh my gosh yeah i oh oh god talk about euphoria i just got chills oh wow i literally got chills

Merlinthis isn't a bit i don't know if this is the show this could be the pre-show i guess we're not doing the real show yet right i no no not at all i was gonna show you something uh can i uh Can I send you a... I guess I could do a live photo, but let me just make a short video. I'm... I think now I am officially... I may officially now be an insufferable streamer. And I'll show you why.

Because my daughter heard I did this. No, no, no, no, no. Did you get it?

AlexNope.

MerlinOh, you probably don't get that because of your internet or your key.

AlexAre these nanoleafs? Are these nanoleafs?

MerlinI'm all in. I'm all in.

AlexOn nanoleafs? I don't know.

MerlinI got strips. I got strips. I got shapes. I got...

AlexOh, my God.

MerlinAnd, and, and...

AlexPeople love this stuff.

MerlinOh, anyway, I was going to say, Alex, hello. I look forward to talking with you. It's nice. But I'm all in, and I've even hooked it up. So I have one that not only triggers the be productive scene where everything's blue and bright. I also added the Elgato lights to that. Blue and bright.

AlexOh, you're pulling the cocks.

MerlinPulling the cocks. Now, that one's called Vintage Modern. And I think it's, did you see that it animates a little?

AlexYes. Oh, indeed.

MerlinI think my daughter really thinks I'm officially like a YouTube douche now. And I had a request this morning. People were saying they liked when I did those Most Days videos. So I'm thinking I'm going to do some Most Days videos. I'll play bass. I'll play bass.

AlexAre you serious? Don't. Don't. I mean. One week. One week. By saying don't. No, no, no. by saying don't I mean please do and that's

Merlinwonderful. Why would you do that Alex? Why would you say it that way? Isn't that odd?

AlexNo it's like a Midwest thing like yeah no yeah means yeah.

MerlinHave you ever been examined for an aphasia?

AlexI mean I've been examined for a lot of things. I don't

Merlinthink that way. We can't remember them all. That's part of the problem.

AlexYeah.

MerlinOur oral co-host would be able to say this word I'm not going to say this word but I diagnosed someone in my life this morning with something I'm calling a late stage spectrum

Alexdisorder. Or someone who's old and autistic? I'm just trying to understand. Hey, whoa, whoa,

Merlinwhoa. That beep you just heard was Alex not saying a word. Oh my gosh. I didn't say the,

AlexI didn't drop the hard R. Don't beep that, Quinn. Because I realize now it all makes sense. You

Merlinremember last year when I realized, you know what? I can't say this. Last year, I realized that a person in my life that I love and I have part of what makes our relationship good is we have complimentary deficits where that person sees all forests and I see all trees and that was really

Aleximportant for me. All right. You remember that? I do. Yes. Yes. Because I get obsessed about

Merlindetails and this person just gets stuff done. But my obsession with details and planning and all my demon dogs can also be handy because then I can come in and say, well, that's a nice forest, but what about these trees we're about to run into? You follow? And then today I realized that there may be a disorder that someone in my life has that I've just made up a name for today, which is when you have some kind of a thing where you don't really understand, in this case, why someone is telling you something. And this explains a lot of the, oh, no, you got that woman's name wrong things.

Do you follow?

AlexLike where I try to tell a nice anecdote.

MerlinNo, I say, oh, I just ran into Jeannie. I just ran into Jeannie. And Jeannie's doing great. She's an RN now. And remember, they were in second grade together. And she goes, oh, you mean Janine?

AlexMm-hmm. Yes, yes.

MerlinOkay, that's because, I think that's because of the condition. And so I found myself, I said to them, I said to them today, I said, you know, I'm just, I'm going to do a little meta conversation. here. Sometimes one reason people tell one another stories and anecdotes is just a way of bonding and saying, I love you. And sometimes the information that we're passing is ultimately, I just wanted to share a minute with you. But the problem is, it really comes about Janine. You know what I'm saying? Cut all that out. Cut all that out.

We have so many, Alex was going to say a few minutes ago, probably six minutes and 47 seconds ago, is I feel like there's never, maybe, ever been more Save It For The Show content than in this week's episode of Dubai Friday.

AlexOh, interesting. How so?

MerlinWe have so much exciting stuff going on.

AlexYou're a streamer. You're doing vintage Merlin Man.

MerlinAlso, my setup is good. Let me write down setup.

AlexMy setup is good. Wow. That was such a shitty thing to say. I apologize. What's that, honey? What'd you say? Listeners, don't... Don't...

MerlinDon't honey me.

AlexReferring to you as vintage, I meant that in the hipster millennial way.

MerlinUsually that's with porn.

AlexOf a good, cool thing and not an, oh, that's old. And I apologize. Oh, man.

MerlinWell, I think that might be part of the fun one imagines is it'd be fun if I, and this is Inside Baseball, nobody listens to this show, but if I were to pick up exactly where we left off, you may remember, Alexandra, we did this as a challenge, to be a vlogger challenge some years ago.

AlexYes, yes.

MerlinAnd that's where I found a reason to buy a bunch of equipment. it'd be fun if I just picked it right up did it for one week same format like here's something to listen to here's something I'm excited about that kind of thing yes yes yes yes plus I've been letting my letting my facial hair grow so I look drawn look old and drawn oh drawn and won do you have like a I miss the pandemic I miss it already no I do because like you know you're on a pandemic

Alexbeard it's like well no and now I'm just unkempt and now it's just my beard it's just bad

MerlinI'm just careless. I've got all the things. I just, it doesn't take any amount. This is again, probably the edibles, but like I take so little, it takes so little resistance for me to not do

Alexsomething now. I've become very slothful in this time. Are you slothful or do you care more about

Merlinyour priorities and those close to you? Oh my God. That's such a good cover story. I'm going to Write that down.

AlexCover story. Call the Atlantic, please. Where's Cal Newport? Mr. Newport?

MerlinOh, exactly. The Rise and Fall of Merlin Mann title. Oh!

Alexit is interesting that you say that because i don't feel any different than uh like the before times, the after times. What do we call pandemic times now? I guess pandemic times.

MerlinNo, I mean, I don't know where that line comes from, but I think before times is a good line for lots of things, especially COVID, pandemic, and lockdown. When we say before times, I think people know what that means. It sounds like something like a Pat Rothfuss thing or a Martin kind of thing, the before times. I see that. So you're saying you don't feel different

Alexthem before? Oh, not even a little. You might have the disorder. Well, I was going to say, I'm pretty sure that a lot of this has to do with a number of disorders that I have been diagnosed

Merlinwith. I haven't wanted to ask, but as recently as last night, my recently diagnosed partner asked that very question. How's Alexandra doing? Is there any... Oh God, I need to write all this down. We've got, okay, so we're starting a new show with iMichael and Jason, apparently. I'm going to do most of these videos. I have a base. I've configured a bunch of lights. As we speak, I'm installing the Mac OS beta on a second, second, second Mac mini. I've got it on my iPad.

I mean, it's a medical term. I've got a technology erection that could knock down Muir Woods at this point. I'm extremely excited. We're going to talk about some of this, right? incidental incidental apple podcast yeah or incidental computer stuff I mean I think I

Alextexted you and I know you were only sort of watching half of it and I'm like this is this

Merlinis just pure Merlin and Alex porn oh yeah I missed I missed a lot I have not watched the Bo Burnham movie as much as you what are you up to now how many how many in the last 24 hours

AlexAlex be honest okay listen I've technically only watched Bo Burnham's inside twice but But I have listened to it three times. So I guess that's a soft five.

MerlinOh, like you had it on. Is it doing like an HGTV? You have it on the background type situation?

AlexYeah, and I've had it on the background. I've been listening to it when I showered. Like, oh, I truly love that man who was once a boy and is now a man.

MerlinThe white lady Instagram. Is that the bit?

AlexOh, challenge, challenge, challenge, challenge.

MerlinYou know what? I was going to say, you know, Alex. And then also this morning, I was trying to use a script in Sheets to take us down to the last current line of Google Sheets. I might be manic, Alex. Save it for the show. I'm going to say watch Bo Burnham inside.

AlexWell, don't I have something on there that's like Bo Burnham something? Bo Burnham. Because I didn't know what an interesting challenge is. And I think that an interesting challenge is everybody should just watch this.

MerlinLet's go look. I also hid more lines. I hid more lines also.

AlexGood.

MerlinBecause this is getting out of control. You can do a script that takes you to the last line that has content. How?

AlexHow? How, how, how?

MerlinWell, you got to go to the script editor and deploy it. And I found that confusing.

AlexOh, OK. I've only tried doing this in shortcuts.

MerlinBut one idea I had also. Oh, I said. Here we go. Did you already have one about the dock in here?

AlexNo, maybe. I thought so.

MerlinImprove the dock in the sheet, which which my cowardly worst friend, John Siracusa, refuses to do.

Alexuse the doc in vr that was what i was thinking of oh that's not not yet it's just uh tbd 0572

Merlinyou got become beta cucks hey everybody welcome to by friday we have a challenge sheet um uh it would be kind of weirdly fun to share this with people yeah i was just thinking about that okay

Alexi'm gonna write it down and share the sheet share the sheet that way people can see

Merlinshoot the sheet we could have a second sheet a second tab where people could submit things but I don't like when people do that because then they have access to my perceptions. And then they say things. Did you listen to You're Wrong About?

AlexOh, indeed. I did indeed.

MerlinDid you listen to that last nine minutes? Listen to the last nine minutes? You forgot poppy seed? The way that Michael and Sarah addressed, and there's just not enough scare quotes for this, for cancel culture. The way that they addressed this was like so refreshing to me in a way that was not satisfying, I'm sure, for them. But as somebody, and you know, that again, such a dumb phrase. It's not meaningful. And they really go through that.

They go through a lot of stuff. But like their own personal, first of all, their confusion and frustration with what that's supposed to mean really resonated with me. And then by the end, they're both like, I don't know, man. And Sarah was very vulnerable about saying, look, I just, I don't want people yelling at me all the time. And like, I, but I don't like that word. I'm not going to say sex offender and I'm not going to say cancel culture, right? Because sometimes it just means, and they both involve urine. They involve, you know, peeing in public or peeing on other people.

Let's be honest. That's a great episode. We should put that in notes. This is Dubai Friday, a show about podcasts we like. And Mike Hurley. Oh, sorry. Oh, no, that sounded like a slam and I didn't mean it that way.

AlexWait, what's a slam?

MerlinNo, I meant him as a media personality. I meant him as a...

AlexOh.

MerlinI still fondle my Cortex notebook, but it's way too nice for me to put anything in. It's on my top in my pile of notebooks. I like to just go and feel the cover because it centers me.

AlexOne guy with 73 folders, once I think put on Tumblr, the first page is profound. Like writing...

MerlinFirst page is profound. That's the first thing you should write in every notebook.

AlexMm-hmm. Yep, and that's what I do. except I, well, now I've edited a bit. But the first page doesn't need to be profound and comma, calm down. Although I know that it should probably be a semicolon. Yeah, it should, oh, I guess it should be.

MerlinHave you looked into copywriting that?

AlexI, okay.

MerlinBecause it really is, it's such a good catchphrase for you. Calm down is a very good catchphrase.

AlexYeah, well, that's another thing I've been yelled at on the internet. I mean, Sarah, I think both Sarah and Michael talked about when Natalie Wynn, aka ContraPoints, which is canceled because and i this is what natalie wynn did to be canceled you're trans wrong uh yep that was like you're you're joking that was it that was it i really wish the

Merlinlaughter is just to keep me from dying yeah yeah yeah yeah like as someone who has gone through

Alexwhat has been classified as light stalking and harassment and like physical abuse nothing me along with natalie wynn all of that isn't as bad as being rejected by your own community for an opinion that hurts nobody and right wow

Merlinright right can i can i just tell you the bagel i like without that being something that needs to be remarked upon and it reflects something you imagine about my personality i just feel like they i feel like they really nailed it that was also the maintenance phase with the wagon of fat is very good oh yeah but i um yeah and i don't know because it's i it's so difficult i feel like i i have no mouth yet i must tweet like i i can't talk about the complex feelings that i have about this

you know um also there was a very ironically timed episode of on the media this week

Alexdo you listen on the media when people send me good episodes including you yes on the media as

Merlina show i've listened to god since i lived in tallahassee i feel like and it's you know it's it's real normie but it's it's good and bob and brooke do a show each week where they talk about what um like the media coverage of things including how the media covers the media which is navel gazing but it can be very good they have very good guests ironically enough michael hobbs was a guest um this week one of the four guests and guess what he was there to talk about he's there to talk about cancel culture and they were talking about the cancel culture thing and i'm sorry i'm even saying this word it's one of those things you know like the the like the we

need a better word for phobic kind of things but did you know what happened with bob in the last

Alexcouple weeks yeah i didn't even realize that until i had that's the guy edited by

MerlinBrooke, that guy. And so apparently, I don't know. See, I don't want to pass judgment on this because that's exactly the kind of thing where I'm like, can everybody just please to use Alex's phrase, calm down. But he apparently was kind of terrible with people, including Brooke. And I hated to hear that. And owing to the I think the phrase is an anti-bullying policy at the very problematic WNYC. They let him go. And then, of course, he got on Maine and was real like oh when you find out the facts about this it's you're going to be shocked about the

he's some kind of a word the really he didn't he didn't say perfidy but it was one of those like 75 cent words for like everybody disrespected me but it was and they haven't talked about it on the show which i get kind of because that's how i would do it because i'm broken inside but it was a pretty interesting episode and michael was on to talk about that and uh what was my point about this just that you know it's we have all these fights with each other and i'm kind of cribbing

from an in these times article i read this week finding for notes but i'm cribbing from this but like we have all these arguments about i don't want to say nothing because there is something substantial in the way that we feel about things or our values even but when we have an argument about one of these basically media manufactured phrases. You know, like MSNBC and CNN have obviously had some kind of a meeting that they're going to keep referring to Trump and his big lie. And it always grinds me because you can tell that there's,

they really know what to serve people that they want to hear. And there's these, not memes exactly, but these catchphrases for something. And we all start using them. and we end up getting so wound up in concentrating on these phrases in a way that would make Derrick laugh his way off the motorcycle because what are we actually talking about? We can't even agree on what the thing is that we're arguing about. We harden our positions and then we just start peeing on anybody in range

and it's like, it's just, it bugs me. I'll remember more on the media. I'm talking a lot, say something.

AlexI'm surprised that, you know, You say the word bug because it just enrages me at this point.

MerlinWell, I mean, like the problem is that it really electrifies a couple different big tentpole things for me. I mean, there's the part of it that may seem incidental is like I do have some opinions about things that reflect my values. but like I don't it's almost like a reverse Groucho Marx like I please don't let me become a member of your group like it's just your it's just it's a lynch mob and then of course that's of course problematic in its own way

but it's not even that it's just it's just more like everybody just pops out of the woodwork and it's uniformly terrible and the way Michael addressed this on their show talking about their show and how there's people who one person says oh this is all what's the phrase cop copaganda like all they're doing is repeating the cop stories and then people who've never listened to the show go oh yeah fuck those guys but like so there's that one part of it of like oh that's really that's really unkind and deliberately misapprehending but the other thing that really electrifies in me is this whole like again the performance thing or

the fake the like the masks that we all briefly don in order to make strangers think that we're someone different from whom we are. And it's, that is, like you said, it's, I don't know, it's gutting to me. It's gutting to me to see really smart, like, grown-ass people, like, agreeing to become, like, some kind of Muppet version, like, a cruel Muppet version of themselves in order to, like, to talk about strangers in order to impress strangers. And it's,

and that's what it is. I really think that's what it is. But it's not okay to say that, Because now it sounds like, again, to invoke Mao, it's a little bit counter-revolutionary. It's like, oh, why don't you support the cause? Why can't you be an ally for all these 18-hour rage flus that we're passing around?

AlexAnd I have been guilty of this many times, hopefully not recently.

MerlinOf course, we all have. You got a minute to spare. You're waiting for your potato chips to fall out of the vending machine. And why not go and help assail somebody who you don't know? Oh, and that was the other part. That was the thing I wanted to remember from on the media. It's like they talked to several people, you know, who've been in and they talk about the woman at, was it the AP? The woman who got brigaded by all the right wing people and they fired her.

AlexBecause I'm rarely on Twitter, I don't even know what you're talking about.

MerlinThat was a big story a couple of weeks. It's a really sad story. This woman who's like an assistant, assistant, assistant news person, but who's broken a couple big stories. And somebody went and dug up some old tweets where she speaks her mind about, I think it was Palestine in particular, and Palestine and Israel. And then everybody's like, oh, you know, the AP is hiring propagandists to attack Israel or whatever. And, you know, she got fired. She got fired because the brigade got to her boss and then she was out of there.

But there's also the guy there's I have to talk to a professor who I'm going on. I'm sorry. We have so many exciting things to talk about. Talk more about how you feel right now, Alex. It helps me.

AlexWell, I don't know. It's I don't really have I realized I don't really have complicated feelings about all of this. Most of it is, oh, I'm just watching actual adults all around me become bullies out of boredom. At least that's what I think. The same way you need to be the tough guy on the playground, you need to be the person on Twitter who posts the right infographic and on Instagram.

and I just think about how it's taken me so long and not just me many many people who have either been marginalized or just less visible than you know the the nice straight white boys like wait I've we've worked so hard for all of us to you know not get hate crimed hopefully during the day which I know still happens.

But and yet we are just screaming at each other. Like we have the privilege of being accepted.

MerlinAnd instead of we're back to the narcissism of subatomic differences.

AlexYeah. Well, and the one thing that you do not need to comment on this, but, you know, there was that incident with a bean dad, shall we say. And what infuriated me about that was seeing somebody who I, you know, don't really know, but but know of and who I know has done things for a special specifically the queer community that I don't think most people realize. And I hope people tell you how much Roderick on the line has.

MerlinWho I think in some sort of informal and stated way may kind of various times consider themselves part of the community, I think.

AlexAnd who is just a good, I'm talking about John Roderick, who I've watched over the past 10 years in your, yeah, that one over there, him there.

MerlinHe tries on ideas like a sports coat. I mean, is that is that really like a fireable offense? And just like have making an obvious joke that you take out of context.

AlexYeah, I was like looking at these old retweets and seeing like, wait, wait, these jokes defending the gay community. And just because it's it's not great to say fag anymore. Usually like it's just it bums people out. But no, just I and I see our friends who are rich and powerful do amazing things.

MerlinHe was saying it just to get max attention so the piano wouldn't fall on him. Hero or hate crime?

AlexI just, I'm like, I let bullies control me as a kid. I don't want it to happen as an adult. So I'm like, eh, I'm done.

MerlinI can't even tell you the ways that I bend over backwards in real life. Because I am, I mean, if I'm being honest, I am very averse to conflict. If I can avoid it, I don't want to have conflict with people. And so if, you know, there's times where I just tolerate something that I'm not crazy about. And maybe that says something, that certainly says something about my personality. But like, you know, that phrase, just taking something that has it's got like a grain of nothing and turning that into what I like to call a whole thing.

And now you're in a whole thing with somebody, you know, and this actually does touch on other things we've talked about. This touches on the whole like, hey, just because I said notice that made a statement about the house doesn't mean I'm criticizing you or like, you know, whatever. You know, like Freud says, you know, sometimes a word is just a word. I agree with you. And like, but then what do you, because then you get involved in that and now it's a whole thing.

AlexYeah. And sometimes it's a whole thing with a website that thinks it's reality, but it's not, which they also covered on the You're Wrong About episode.

MerlinI love that they nailed that. I think it was Michael that just basically said, this is a Twitter thing.

AlexYeah. Yep.

MerlinIt's not even like, it's not even like, you don't rile people in the same particular type of way on Facebook as you do on Twitter. But Twitter has become so machined and honed to be this perfect instrument for long-distance cruelty.

AlexMm-hmm. And now we are rewarded for it. I don't know if they talked about the whole, I think people know this now, like the casino mentality and just getting those hits for hearts.

MerlinThe intermittent rewards.

AlexYeah. And I mean, but I don't, I don't know. I'm not even pausing because I'm afraid of getting in trouble. It's just, I never really care about offending people. I really care about hurting people and bumming them out.

MerlinThat's a growth that's not interesting to other people. But that growth that I feel like in some ways we both had and still see as a journey is this whole like, oh, I know that I can, I mean, I could be projecting here. But I feel like what we're both kind of saying is like, geez, I know, it's not even about like my branded boredom. It's more about like, oh, man, I've been such a shitheel about something I didn't need to be a shitheel about. And I would like to say that I'll just never be a shitheel again. But instead, it's not really about like how you see me.

It's about my role in the world, which sounds corny, but my, I don't want my role in the world to be that I can be provoked to be extremely unkind to other people in a way that benefits no one and hurts everyone. But that's not a, that's a quiet personal journey that like, if I wanted, I'm doing it now, I guess, but like, I don't want to talk about that and make that into a whole thing because then it's a performance. You know, we brush our teeth for us, not for others. It does benefit others, but mainly we do it because that's what we do.

And you know what I mean? Isn't that part of it? Like, you just don't want to be a dick or an asshole?

AlexWell, I will disagree. I mean, I think that we brush our teeth mostly for others, but save that for the after show.

MerlinYou only really need to go to the dentist twice in your life. You need to go when you're a kid and then when you're older.

AlexI, I, I, though, yes, I agree. And I what bums me out also is that what you do for your job and what I guess I kind of do is, you know, be be vulnerable in public. And it's rarely that sort of stuff that people get angry about. But when they do, it's like the other folks who are also deciding to engage in vulnerability and exploring a different part of themselves, like Broderick says, trying an idea.

And obviously with my end of the world, it's like trying out a gender or a sexuality or like just how you date people or something. But if you do it wrong and then you're a fan of someone or you're a fan of someone who, like Twitter has decided is being trans wrong, it's like, all right, so I guess I'm just going to not grow and change. And I don't want to sound defensive or like I have a chip on my shoulder about all of this.

MerlinYou shouldn't have to sound defensive. That's that's the problem is like I am angry. This is not not your circus, not your monkeys. Like, just, it's, I, the, yeah, what was my line, you know? As long as strangers have the ability to change your mood, you're fundamentally fucked.

AlexYeah.

MerlinBut it's not just your mood. It's that, like, you know, just because you took to really brutalize this very gentle analogy, you try something on, like, a sports coat. Well, like, it's not like you tried on a sports coat that has a swastika on it. You just tried on one that's an ugly plaid. And if somebody caught a photo of you in that ugly suit or ugly jacket, then they could kind of say, like, well, even though you never bought the jacket, I saw you wearing it. And therefore now you're plaid, Dad.

AlexYeah, yeah, yeah.

MerlinAll right. Unfortunately, gosh, I'm so sorry. Something like, I want to see 30 minutes of our podcast were lost.

AlexOh, yeah. Where are we? Hello. I'm going to take this shot of espresso.

MerlinOn the editing room floor, as you say.

AlexYeah. Yeah. Oh, sorry about that. Okay.

MerlinI got to calm down. Tell me to calm down. Go ahead.

AlexCalm. Merlin, calm down. Everything's good. TM, TM, TM.

MerlinWe have so much to talk about. We do. Okay, so Stream Deck 5, we can save. We've got to talk about the challenge, I guess. And we've been warned by Dr. Dawn that we may be treading on some very dangerous territory with this challenge.

AlexAll right. I got to. I mean, listen. Yeah. There's my little snack I'm going to have. I have a few snacks, actually, for our challenge.

MerlinOh, God. I did not peanut butter, but I like vegan peanut butter a little bit. because I'm, again, as Plaid Dad used to say, I'm driven by fear. That should be my shirt.

AlexThat is what I'm driven by, fear and capitalism, and I don't like either of them.

MerlinReally? Interesting. Oh, you don't like, interesting, you don't like capitalism?

AlexIsn't that a meme? Isn't that a meme? I'm telling on myself, mask off, mask off.

MerlinLet's see. Interesting capitalism. is um because there's this one cartoon what are you doing it was at 365 what are you popping

Alexdid you pop a drink oh the the no i can though i thought you heard i thought i heard you grip it and rip it oh no i i tried to take a shot of espresso then i spilled it on my cortex notebook which is oh no nice for yeah yeah uh but but there's a uh not 365 i am a bubbly slash la the brand bubbly owned by PepsiCo, TMTM. But the, the OG, the LaCroix, which is, you know,

kind of like the kombucha of sparkling water, but it's, I love it. I love it. Anyway, anyway, I'm not manic.

MerlinOkay. I found, I found it. I found it looking, looking your texts. Oh, so my new trick is I just open a window with the person and then I'm less likely to send them the wrong thing. Have you seen this cartoon before? We'll put it in notes. Basically you see this like, uh, Monty Python and the Holy Grail style peasant with a bundle of sticks looking very ill, like trotting around, looking very sick and dispirited. And this person says, we should improve society somewhat. And then a guy pops out of a well wide-eyed and says, yet you participate in society.

Curious. I am very intelligent. That's by Bors.

AlexExcellent.

Merlinsend the widow a hand accountability smithers i owe you a coke um oh also while we're talking about just real quickly you know you know how my daughter has gotten pretty good at memeing

Alexi didn't even know she had access to the internet and suddenly she is a meme lord well there's a

Merlinminecraft upgrade and there's there's a lot going on there is a it's a big there's big

Alexbig news in the Minecraft streaming world, but you would know that because you're a Twitch boy.

MerlinYeah, it's, what is it, Steps and Stairs? It's a new, it's a new, a new Minecraft we're excited about, right?

AlexYeah, yeah. And when can people watch you live on Twitch, Merlin?

MerlinOh, um, I don't have a joke here.

AlexWhy don't you play with me? Oh, sorry. Oh, ha ha. Play in the game space.

MerlinHa ha, Steedek, look at me, like and subscribe. and check me out on CuriosityStream. I've told you before how like there's certain things I've just stopped saying to my daughter where it's like, when's the food going to arrive? And I'm like, what would that change about your evening if you knew when the food was going to arrive? I mean, are you thinking about getting a snack? You know, I'm just trying to like, I'm trying to lay the groundwork for her to interrogate anxiety as a thing. And she goes, well, I don't know. I'm just, I'm hungry. When's the food going to arrive? There's certain things they don't say. The other thing is like she orders a Ricky Montgomery shirt

and she says, when's the shirt going to arrive?

AlexI'm so sorry for interrupting. What that popping sound you heard was, not to spoil the challenge, but there are some things by me that my cat really wants to eat. No kidding. That's the noise.

MerlinAre they food for something?

AlexThe food for something.

MerlinI mean, it's not like a chew toy. Is it cat food?

AlexOh, it is food. It is. Well, it's food a cat can eat. Okay. I'm sorry. something they just don't say

Merlinand so I've stopped I'm out of the webmaster business I won't tell you about Squarespace I'm out of the webmaster business and I'm out of the assurance business right and so she orders she gives me some money and orders a Ricky Montgomery shirt and I think he's got some new tracks for an album coming soon which we're very excited about anyway and she says when's it gonna arrive and I say well according to the dingus like it'll you know you know how these things are when you do like badafata or one of those or like you know for whatever it's called don't don't uh don't be forgettable to awesome like you don't know when

it's going to ship because it ships when it ships right and then when it does ship you get the dingus that says oh it's arriving sometime around then and i'll say something i used to say things like hey looks like your uh your youtuber you like wristbands will arrive stuff we get will arrive by Friday. And then Friday comes and guess what? Now I'm back in the insurance business and I have to say, oh, it looks like it's not arriving today. Okay. Add to this that I've been terrible about a lot of events and gift giving during COVID, which I'm not good at to begin with,

but like this Mother's Day, I'm like, oh, fuck it, whatever. So I said to my lady friend, like, well, you know, what's something you'd actually really enjoy? And she said, oh, you know, I could use a new immersion blender. My old immersion blender doesn't work very well. I said, not a problem first week of may i order an immersion blender okay the immersion the immersion blender like cut a long story short i get tons of updates about how like it's just on the verge of being canceled and it's always it's delayed then it's going to be should should arrive today even though

it doesn't show as shipped right you know that's not a good sign yeah and so and so So this would be on what date? This is, I think, last week. Yeah, last Friday, I said, honey, I said to my lady friend, honey, I'm calling everybody honey now. I said, wife friend whom I admire, I said, it looks like if everything lines up, looks like the immersion blender might be arriving today. And I said, don't worry about it.

I said, well, I feel like a jerk. It's freaking the first week of June and your Mother's Day present that I ordered over a month ago hasn't come. And I feel bad about that. But really, and I kept reloading it. And I kept saying, oh, look, it's out for delivery. And now Emma, of course, is in the role of me and is making fun of me. And she's saying, like, what are you doing? Why are you doing this? I said, no, but you have to understand, like, it's almost here. And then while I'm still talking to her, I hear a beep. and she says yeah that's just a thing i made real quick and i was like what what what and i looked

go check your text this is something she made while i was talking to her and she sent it to me

Alexmay i describe this yeah it's a known meme i think i haven't seen it in a while but yes yes

MerlinPlease describe this.

AlexSo we have a stock photo of a grand, I would say, and assumed to be grandmother in a walker. And her...

MerlinAn elderly, beloved elderly friend using a walker.

AlexUh-huh. Yeah, she looks a little bit like Betty White. And then...

MerlinBeing assisted by Lorelai Gilmore, it looks like.

AlexYes. And her granddaughter, who looks like Lorelai Gilmore, is just looking at her as if she has dementia.

MerlinEverything about this picture says, there, there.

AlexYep, yep. The grandmother says, the immersion blender is coming today. And Lorelai Gilmore is like, sure, Grandma, but let's get you to bed.

Oh, God. god she's good she's an edgelord i think she may be i think yeah no elon's got nothing on her my

Merlingosh oh yeah yep yep yep um god i i was so excited about this and now i feel like we've really

Alexfucked up should we start over no no no no it's okay we got here's what what's happened we got our emotions out and then on unlike the the website we all love we're moving on to happy things because our lives do not need to be consumed by irrational anger and especially on a podcast that talks about poop and pet food and computers.

I'm fine. How's everybody? Would you like to hear about my keys?

MerlinIt's called it's from a by Matt Bores from a website called the nib, I guess. The nib. that's where the society cartoon is from and I'm going to put it in show notes Alex where do people find show notes for whatever episode this is of your Dubai Friday

Alexprogram oh you can find them at DubaiFriday.com or in slash whatever what are we 249 243 goodness we had a regression you or you can visit not visit. If you're using a podcast app right now that isn't Apple Podcast you should be able to see them right there

Merlinwhere an Apple Podcast decided

Alexshow notes don't matter anymore.

MerlinMarco described it as like somebody's first regex project to like strip all the HTML out of something. Wow. Wow. Wow.

AlexI really... Hey everybody. I'm turning around my pop chair and I'm going to say I love show notes I care a lot about them I like when they're in chronological order and thank you for looking at them Hey, you know what Merlin, if they wanted even more of this manic nonsense where could people go to find that?

MerlinThat's a good question Alex, thanks for throwing to me Hey everybody, it's your old pal Merlin and if you enjoy whatever this is and you'd like to hear more of it Or more saliently, if you'd like to give us money because you like it and you want to help us with all of our surgeries and our nano leaves, you could go to patreon.com slash Dubai Friday or the more memorable giveusyourfuckingmoney.com. And the tithe that we encourage is $5 or $10 a month, but you can give a little or as much as you feel like, I think.

I don't really go there except to post the after show. But the dirty little secret that I think Alexandra has agreed with is you could pay us as little as anything and you'll still get the after show. That's bad for business. It's bad for business.

AlexYeah. Yeah. And people don't even know probably. Capitalism.

MerlinI stopped. Yeah. I stopped ticking that radio button a while back. I think. It's hard to tell what that's like. Come on, Jack. Get it together. Sorry.

AlexOther Jack. Oh, God. Oh, wow. There's a lot of Jacks.

MerlinYeah. A pair of Jacks. The. Okay, I got to get back my enthusiasm. Maybe we should take a break.

AlexDo you not have enthusiasm?

MerlinOh my God, I have so much enthusiasm, but I brought us down with all this bullshit and I feel bad now.

AlexNo, no, no, no. It's not bullshit. It is important because, and this isn't even a bit. It is important because.

MerlinYou need a place. You need a place to talk about things.

AlexPeople just, I, especially, it breaks my heart every time I get a DM that's like, am I crazy in thinking of like blank or blank, which is, and by blank or blank, I mean an idea that either isn't, not even isn't popular, just isn't thought about a lot.

MerlinWe wonder, like, have you been gaslit by yourself or someone else? Yeah. Am I the only one who sees this? Like when the drums drop out of Buddy Holly in the spatial audio part of one minute and ten seconds.

AlexDid you hear it? Did you get it? Was it just me? Yes. Yeah, it is.

MerlinReally, the drums did drop out at 110, right? I'm moving my head around. I got my head on a swivel moving left to right. I'm like, what happened to the Buddy? What happened to Patrick's good drums?

AlexYeah. Welcome to Dubai Friday, everybody, where we talk about spatial audio. Gaslight Nation, am I right? Yesterday, WWDC. Do you, and I have to say, love spatial audio, adore it when it works. And, well, when it's done well, I guess.

MerlinYeah. I mean, listening, what did I listen to? The first one I tried, I kept waiting for it to load because apparently it's very important for my work. And then finally they said, oh, they specifically mentioned Ariana Grande. And so I did pull up an Ariana Grande, and it did it. And I thought, okay, this is kind of cool. And I tried some other things. And then per Marco this morning, our new co-host for our new show, it's for my work, I promise. I went and listened to Buddy Holly but I was walking around at first I was like hmm okay it does the thing that's cool

but then I was walking around and I swear to Christ the drums completely drop out for a few seconds and then I thought oh is it something because of course I begin by assuming I screwed something up is it because of a perception thing or like because of the mix I just went back and played it over and over and the drums totally disappear at one point. And I thought, you know, I love this for watching Fury Road, but I don't know if this is going to have, if they keep doing it like this,

I don't know if it's going to have a lot of longevity for music. What's your thought? You said you'd save it for the show.

AlexI think, I mean, like I just said, when it's done well, but I think some of them, it's like the studio just was like, yeah let's do a quick remix and you know how like when a deluxe edition is it seems like you know

Merlinwhat alex it seems like the kind of thing where like okay think oh i got the perfect example at least for my obsessions which is you know you may not know who cares i don't like i love um justified text when it's like manually typeset and like decisions have been made about kerning and like You know, all the ways that, like, if you look at an old book that is fully justified, meaning it looks like a rectangle on the page, basically, right? It can be very beautiful.

But, you know, for a long time before the age of desktop publishing, I mean, that was all done manually. It's manually typeset. Like, you have to make decisions about, like, you know, where to put things. You want to avoid rivers and orphans and all those kinds of things. Sorry, we don't say that anymore. But there's all these typography words for, like, when this stuff is done poorly. But then, at least in my estimation, I think whenever the LaserWriter came out, maybe 84, 85, people think of it as the beginning of desktop publishing.

Consumer available, like computer to printer stuff. You get PageMaker.

AlexConsumer available in 85? Wait, PageMaker? Oh, God. That's so cool. Whoa.

MerlinI learned, that's part of my superhero origin story is that I had to learn, I chose to learn PageMaker for a really silly publication my friends and I made. And I think it was called Red Beans and Rice. And, oh, Brady's Bits, would you like to know what the deck, what the subtitle was for Red Beans and Rice that my friend Dan came up with?

AlexPlease, please.

MerlinRed Beans and Rice, A Journal of Emotional Hygiene.

AlexWow.

MerlinAnd I thought that phrase, the entire phrase, emotional hygiene is great, but a journal of emotional hygiene was such a great phrase. I may have repurposed it for something else. Sorry, Dan.

AlexYeah, maybe. Just maybe.

MerlinBut in that case, you say like, okay, well, this might have been available in things like Word or other Mac. But you could say like, you know, mostly you did ragged right, which means, I'm sorry to be condescending, but that means everything lines up on the left. You know, centered is centered. Everything's centered. Right and right or left justified means everything's squared to the beginning of – after a carriage return, it's all – But, you know, hyphenation or otherwise, then the right side automatically moves stuff to a new line based on the size of the container.

And yes, there were rules for this. Alexandra, I get things on Kindle. And there's a reason I start with a sample. First of all, it doesn't make sense to buy a book.

AlexAre you trying to trigger me?

MerlinBecause first of all, like why buy a book if you can't get through the sample? Like, you know, show me the lie. And you open something up and it defaults to justify it. And guess what? The area with pick your alignment preference is grayed out. And if you look at it anything but even at the small sizes, it still looks like homemade shit. And sometimes when I talk about rovers and orphans, I'll find a link for notes. But you get to the last line of something and it has two words with an inch of space between them.

That's really bad justification. And why does it exist? Because someone wants to be Fonzie.

AlexAnd so they turn it, they turn on full justification.

MerlinFonzie. If it's something that's just nice, it's fancy. But like if it's really nice, it's Fonzie. And so what do you, it's totally unreadable to my mind. Like all the cues you don't realize your brain needs to follow along. I'm not going to turn on ruler and Kindle really, but I'm glad it's there. not to yuck on a yum i think it's the same thing here this feels like something where they didn't they didn't manually justify this text i think some of them did though they took a bunch of files

put it on a droplet dropped it onto something and there's a basic not i don't say an algorithm there's a basic script of like based on the stereo separate i'll bet you based on stereo separation and um that's what i'm looking for like i like audio range it seems to just guess where stuff should go and then somehow patrick wilson's wonderful drums at one minute and 10 seconds drop out did you find something you loved did you find something you love yes we're talking

Alexabout spatial audio on music for apple music okay you you explained um justification can you explain into that spatial audio if for the two people who don't know about apple things i mean i can

Merlindescribe i can describe my perception of spatial audio oh also i want to send you a couple more

Alexoh see that's the other thing we got to talk about the perception of what it i mean we don't have to but it's like how are you experienced anyway uh what's uh spatial audio merlin well okay so the

Merlinthing that was introduced for initially just for airpods pro as far as i know the latest airpods pro is a thing called spatial audio. And, you know, there's these various kinds of things. Like, I think a straightforward one is like a 5.1 system for music, right? Where you've got like...

AlexOh, sorry, Jazz Bitch is going to interrupt you. Go, go. Because it does work on regular AirPods as well. Because Maddie was like, what happened to Apple Music? And I was like, oh.

MerlinOkay. Oh, yeah, we went around this with the explainer-in-chief. Yeah, the summarizer-in-chief. But I think if you think about the way stereo works is like you mix it in a certain way so that you make decisions about what goes on left and right channels. And then if you get something, my understanding of a 5.1 system is you've got a left and a right in front, a left or a right in back, and then I think one in the middle that's usually for dialogue. But that's not something that's automatically justified. Somebody made decisions about what goes where. and even on my very modest home system

that involves HomePods, it can be very cool. You get into something like Atmos or you get into something like... So those kinds of things really make it sound a little bit like you're in the room. And they're doing a crazy hack, I think, with spatial audio, which is depending on what's in your ears right now, what you'll hear is you will get... If you're looking at your iPhone, you're looking at your iPad in the past months or year or whatever, you really get a sense of the room in the way that you test this and get like feel like a weirdo

and get neck pain is if you move if your head moves in uh so like when you're listening to it it does really sound like you're in a room like if you're watching something with um you know atmos or whatever their other surround sound like even on your dumb airpods it's like wow this is really clever. It does actually sound like it's coming from many directions and not in an artificial way. It really feels like a room sounds like a room, which sounds crazy. But you're like,

Alexwow, this is really neat and very immersive. It's the best consumer AR product ever made. AirPods? It's just, yeah, the whole line.

MerlinWell, especially because of that thing. John Gruber pointed this out that when you're using transparency mode uh and this is about to get way cooler with uh with what's coming up in the beta but like you know transparency mode so you've got why am i why am i the explaining guy today

Alexit's really insufferable well i i will say if you want to hear i'm gonna plug it uh i do another show called roboism with a friend of the show kathy campbell mrs soup on twitter and we specifically talked about airpods and i think you're going to talk about uh conversation boost as well yes which i can't figure out how to turn it on but i need to i don't think it's in there yet well yes i'm

Merlingoing to i plan to use that even right now if you turn on transparency mode as as chairman gruber said it is like an ar experience because whether you could be listening to or not listening to music but there's some secret song oh gross i don't want that in my ear um but there's something happening with with the airpods pro where like it's so remarkable how clear and this is before the conversation boost of this latest beta or future but like even if you just got it on transparency mode it's wild you still have the social or cultural burden of like being a looking

like an inattentive person but like if you're going to be out say riding a scooter while you're listening to mexican wine transparency mode can be good because you really do hear the stuff around And do you consider that a lightweight form of AR?

AlexNot a lightweight. Completely. It is. It is like your reality is being adjusted.

MerlinI'm really gay bones for the fancy Sonys, the WXHM. I got the fours. I got the fours at home. I got the three at work. And they're terrific sounding headphones. Like when I'm sitting around, like I was listening to the new Hardcore History, the five-hour episode about the end of World War II in Asia. I was listening to that last night. It's got a mode. It's got a neat thing where you can like cup. Do you know about this? You can cup your hand over the outside of the right one, and it knows that that means turn it into their version of transparency mode.

AlexOh, that is very cool. Does it work?

MerlinYeah, it does.

AlexIt works pretty well.

MerlinBut with the AirPods, again, like it's a little miraculous to me. I don't know how it works, but, you know, and so the downside has been if you want to watch Mad Max Fury Road and get that effect, you know, you have not been able to do that on anything but a modern iOS device, I feel like with AirPods, right? So if we set it up and now, God, I don't even need my AirFly dingus anymore. If my kid and I want to watch something with fancy audio, I want to impress her with this. We can both just share that now.

That's great. But you are watching it on an iPad. However big that is, it's not quite the same as a 66-inch TV.

AlexBut guess what is coming to TVOS? Not in there yet. It's not in there yet. I know, but I'm so excited.

MerlinI used my old Apple TV for the beta.

AlexOh, goodness. I should.

Merlinthere's a reason you know what i'm saying the duplicity uh duplications have their privileges the don't like i put on my watch don't like i put on my watch never put on your watch

Alexnever put a beta on your watch oh the beta well especially early betas yeah they don't i i i would have uh never installed a dev beta on my main phone and uh no we're gonna we're gonna we're

Merlingonna address it head on because we need it for our work but underscore david smith is like he's He's spilling his seed upon the ground about what's going on with WatchOS. He's very excited. All the complications, complicated complications. He made some very complicated complications. And he made some faces that are just bananas.

AlexOh, I'm so sorry, Merlin. I need to take this call. I'm so sorry. I'll be right back. I'm so, so, so sorry.

MerlinOkay. I'll play guitar. Let's see here. Okay. I've got my, this is my acoustic guitar, which maybe or may not be in tune. Oh, Jesus.

I call this relative tuning. Because it's relatively in tune.

AlexHi, Merlin and everybody. I'm so sorry. Did you have to go?

MerlinYou have to go?

AlexGreat call. No, no, no. It was good. Everything's fine. Hey, everybody. Thank you for supporting us on Patreon.

MerlinYou've only gone for like 30 seconds. I haven't even gotten to play my guitar. Okay, so I'm going to play some of my favorite chords for various reasons.

AlexOh, go ahead, yes.

MerlinWell, I mean, I don't want to go straight to the chase, but my favorite chord is, imagine a G, but you're also hitting a, what is that, B, C, D? You're also hitting a D on the B string down here. And you do a G, right?

AlexWhich is my favorite because I'm basic.

MerlinNope, nope, it gets better because you do the walk down. You do the walk down. So this is my all-time favorite chord. This is a G with an added F sharp. Are you ready? All-time favorite chord. Ready?

So. You can do the walk down. So you can do the gardening at night walk down. Now, if you're going to play a C, I like that one because you can keep your fingers on those two high strings.

and you're getting some good jangle. But if you want to do the serious John Roderick C, so you do a C, open C, but then you also play the G on the E string, and you get this.

Ooh! And you get It'll Be a Breeze. And you can also do walk-ups with that. Or you can play Mayor of Simpleton.

See, see? So G with an added F sharp, that's probably my favorite chord. And of course, I love an F major 7th with the pinky on the high G, on the high E string. Because then you can do unsatisfied.

I'm a little out of tune.

AlexMan, it's such a good day.

MerlinDo you have a favorite chord? Oh, also like the A major 7th. So I wrote a song one time. It's all based on A major 7th and D major 7th all open. You can do this.

AlexLet's see.

MerlinThat's just a slighty A major 7th. And then I love an E9.

AlexWait, wait, wait. What two chords were those? Did you steal a song I wrote in...

MerlinA major 7th open, and then you slide up to the D position. Also, the F major 7th slide's good.

Oh, so yeah, I wrote a song that goes like this in the form. Let's see. Let's see how it goes.

That's it. You could also make that better by doing this.

AlexReady for this?

MerlinWhat once was bright as cadmium Has faded into grey There's as far as the things I'm meant to say But I don't know what to say It's always been the same old story Things we do for love and glory Open D, and you can do a Cinnamon Girl.

I don't remember how to play this. And you can do it with this.

Anyway. This is going to need a lot of editing.

AlexIt's such a good day. Hey everybody, that was a reference for a show you could check out called Reconcireble Differences on Relay FM hosted by Merlin Mann and John Siracusa. This is how I play

MerlinSeptember Girls by Big Star. I fuck it up a little bit. Did you ever listen to that Big Star list I made you?

AlexOh, no, I didn't. But also, I'm not losing my mind. Someone on Twitter also pointed out that the link to the playlist of like the Spotify split or whatever, it was broken.

MerlinI know. I know. I have to like you have to clone. I learned a terrible thing and a cool thing. Terrible thing is like no matter how many times I hit public on those, it never works. the thing i learned that's cool i cannot believe works in spotify is if you're in the app on a mac did you know you can select all and then paste that into a playlist yes i had no idea

Alexwell that wasn't there forever i used to do when i did acoustic live shows i used to do a medley

Merlinthat of um you did acoustic live shows oh god of course and uh that was my start and then um I used to do a terrible, terrible medley of Photographed by Def Leppard and Working for the Weekend.

That's it. I see your face every time I dream. Every page in a magazine. So wild, so free, so far from me. you're all i want my fantasy oh anyway that's pretty much that um oh my gosh unfortunately for the second time we lost a ton of audio in this show

AlexWe didn't lose the time. We'll see. I hope that one day you make another...

MerlinYou should hear the bass. The bass sounds so good. I got an update. I got an update for you on the song. I've added more tracks. I've added a lot more tracks. I still haven't finished writing it, but I added a lot more tracks. A little play in the after show. I'm excited about making music right now. It's really fun.

AlexI was going to say, I would really... What I... Sorry, my brain is... God, my brain is real broken today.

MerlinWell, you know why, Alex? Can I say at least in part, like you're being pulled in a lot of directions right now. You've got a key check. You've got a key master and a gatekeeper coming out. He's going to probably have remarks about the table and what happened to inspect your keys. Are we allowed to talk about that?

AlexOh, it was my fault. Okay. Well, anyway, it's an array.

MerlinI'm giving a list. We've also got music to talk about and why music is great. Even if you're terrible at it, like me, it's still fun to do. There's music that's great. We're excited. We're excited about things from WWDC. And I ate some dog food.

AlexOh, dog food. Interesting. Interesting.

MerlinWell, I really did kind of punk out hard. I'll tell you about it. Save it for the show. Is this going to be the worst episode, the best episode, or something like just eldritch in between those?

AlexI mean, every episode is someone's favorite and least favorite.

MerlinIs that true? Have you checked that?

AlexWhat do you mean? Have I checked? That's what I just tell myself.

MerlinWell, I mean, do you hear from people? Are you getting notes?

AlexOh, yeah. I hear many nice things. Yeah.

MerlinI sent you two more of my Nanoleafs. Did you see that?

AlexI did. I... Oh, God. Yesterday, I was at the Apple store, and I just stared at a big box of these Nanoleaf hexagons.

MerlinIt's a little bit costly, but it makes the room really nice. So I sent you Vintage Modern.

Alexi uh wait are you doing the the alex method of during different modes you change the lights oh oh yeah like well different mode like thinky worky because what i'm trying to do now is in the new focus mode the various focus modes oh yeah right of course this would play well with focus that's a great idea right okay and just switching to different modes via shortcuts too like oh man it is much less buggy than i thought i haven't i haven't done that i'm still i mean like

Merlinthe nano leaf app is it's one of those like it's frustrating in the sense that like in the one in one way it's trying it's doing some very interesting stuff because you have different nano leaves you've seen these every douchebag has these in the background next to their giant youtube button wait really i've never seen these it's like a classic isn't it a classic youtube

Alexdouchebag thing to have them in the background i don't know all i watch on youtube how does adam

Merlinneely make his hair purple i want my hair purple like adam neely it's a good look he does that

Alexwith lights i just want adam neely oh man i want adam neely too did you see him explaining the

Merlintiktok dissonance video not yet no no oh it's really good there's a tiktok my daughter knew this but there's like a lady a lady that my daughter follows on tiktok jesus what world am i living in uh she was she follows on tiktok she's a beautiful singer and then i guess people do response things a lady harmonized with it with an insanely close like they're called duo

Alexduolingo no duets yes but it's a

Merlinpostergo hawk right because then you can build on it and you do a sea shanty and then like you keep adding on right anyway a lot of people gave this lady who did the harmony gave her stick about like how terrible it sounded and it's like no as Adam Neely I love I love Adam Neely's hobby horse about like stop letting European notation and classical sensibilities like turn you off to like the world that's out there and start acknowledging the white supremacy of a lot of music theory which sounds nuts until he explains it and by the time he

explains what's going on in that and we'll put it in show notes this was happening in this tiktok uh response duet look at me i'm alex i speak french uh your old opinion will go in the toilet if you'll forgive my saying um and so while on z but like and then he plays like this amazing like scott uh simpson sent me this wonderful

because i was into that i love that shape note music kind of like and he's like oh i was i spent In the late 90s, I was very into like this, not Bulgarian, but like Eastern European singing that's very similar in some ways. And he plays you some Bulgarian like choral music that has these tight, perfectly done dissonances. And it's gorgeous. Go listen to The Roaches. I'll find it for notes. I'm saying this so I find it later in the script. If you listen to the band The Roaches and you go, are you familiar with the song called The Hammond Song by The Roaches? Are you familiar with that?

R-O-C-H-E-S?

AlexI am not.

MerlinOkay, I'm writing it down.

AlexI'm writing down Hammond's song.

MerlinAnd that has, if you can flawlessly pull off a half-step interval and hold it while you're harmonizing. Because your brain, you're like a Josh Groban. Your snap to grid is, I want to sing this good. It takes a lot of skill to sing something that sounds like it doesn't fit into the intervals, the consonant intervals of Western music. I want to play the Hammond song. You can find that at dobyfriday.com. I got a lot to add to notes this week, Alex.

AlexDo you like music?

MerlinDo you like music? You like music and you like people being happy. You like people being happy, I think.

AlexI know. Very problematic opinions that I have. That's on you.

MerlinThat's on you. That's not on me.

AlexNo, I'm just trying to listen this week instead of being...

MerlinI would listen.

AlexI just...

MerlinIt sucks because the thing I put on my stream deck, I got a button now for applause. and I thought that any time and I'll have hopefully by next week but I gotta do a loopback I thought it'd be nice every time you and I say something take a bold brave stance as an ally it would be nice to have some applause and that's less for Quinn to have to do

Alexhow? how? no one will help me with loopback I'm trying so and I just was able to do like a soundboard thing on Windows the other day

Merlinif I want my stream deck audio to make it onto my audio hijack recording, what do I have to do? Do I need to go all the way in on capture all sound input?

AlexI don't know. That's the thing is you need to use loopback and audio hijack, obviously, but they need to work together in some way that I always mess up.

MerlinI really feel like I'm going to really screw something up if I do that stuff wrong. It's very timid, but that's how I feel.

Alexi have broken many many things trying to play with loopback oh like just just this journey of

Merlintrying to get to where i don't know this is useful to quinn it's useful to me but just getting to the journey of getting both and this is not paul's fault um i'm just an idiot and like i don't think things through but the journey of getting to like yes record my local side yes record what's coming in through zoom for you and then yes make a joined version of that as a reference because i think that's handy. Like when I'm doing stuff in Descript it's very handy to have a reference file to throw next to it. If something's out of alignment it makes it so much easier to do.

I mean I'm stipulated I'm the Jason Snell. You know what I'm saying?

AlexWell they, who among us is a Snell?

MerlinYou know. Whom's amongst us? Do you follow Darth on the internet? Of course

AlexI follow Darth. Darth follows me. I think he follows everybody. Isn't it nice that

MerlinDarth exists? Doesn't it Sometimes it just occurs to me, I'm like, Darth is so Darth. And you get Darth. It's going to be about potatoes. And it's going to be about his adorable. And I shouldn't say, but I had an interaction one time where I said, my favorite part about you is that the expression is always the same. And if I'd had that interaction, the person would have said, sorry, the red panda would have said, well, it was a decision at one point. Like, should there be different expressions?

Apart from, like, yelling into the megaphone with the teeth bared, I think it's a deliberate decision that Darth always has the same expression. I think it makes it funnier.

AlexYeah. No, it feels like there is a style guide for the whole Darth performance in a good way.

MerlinDarth in the fucking Corvette with Joan Didion killed me.

AlexOh, gosh.

MerlinBecause I'm obsessed with Joan Didion. I just love photos of Joan Didion smoking because Joan Didion's always smoking. But Joan, hot, 70s, probably slightly disordered eating. Joan Didion leaned against the Corvette smoking a butt with Darth driving it. Oh, magnifique.

AlexI'm just glad Darth is there.

MerlinAre there other things like Darth in your world? Are there other things out there where you're like, I'm just so glad that this thing on Twitter in particular exists?

AlexI mean, drill is the obvious one. But it's not a cost of mind.

MerlinGetting ass blasted, for my honest opinion. I think I'm getting some miniature Les Pauls for the boys to look at. You can't read a drill tweet to someone because it's just so flawlessly, has flawless errors in it. Drill makes me happy. Drill does make me happy.

AlexI always wonder also if there's a style guide for just the structure somehow. like i like what's the strunken white of drill i i know drill has been revealed drill has been

Merlinrevealed i refuse to learn i refuse to learn who drill is oh yeah it i think it became a like a cgp

Alexgray thing of like all right this information is out there but we're just going to step away because we want darth to still or uh it's like doxing santa like what the fuck is wrong with you people it is yes it's like why do you want to slash need to know this like don't mask off drill

MerlinAugust 5th, 2019. Because I have all of my bookmarks are exclusive, as you know. All my bookmarks, except for three things, everything in my bookmarks is drill. I have dozens, probably well over 100 drill tweets just to have standing by. Back when I used to care about Twitter a couple months ago. And I would keep these ready to deploy. The ones that are not drill are Christine Nangles. I work at Four Seasons Total Landscaping in Pennsylvania. Just trying to match your energy. That's in there because I just need to watch that every couple weeks. Pixelated Boat, the internet loves milkshake duck. I've got that one in there.

And I've got Nathan out on town having the time of my life with a bunch of friends. They're all just out of frame laughing too.

AlexOh, Nathan Fielder?

MerlinYes. Because I need that. I need to have that around. Oh shit, now I lost my place in this. This is a good episode. I think people are really going to like this. Because the thing is, you get enough of these podcasts with an outline and the chapter markers and stuff. you know the chapter there's no marker here no chapter no chapter jerry no no no we i mean we lose audio we we have we lost we lost audio twice in this episode which is a bummer i mean it's a

Alexvariety show what's a what it's it's just oh i love that a variety show for vaudeville for uh

Merlinwife is no longer permitting me to jack off in the car during her book club meetings where am i supposed to jack off to fucking egypt men are reclaiming ladies night and it's all thanks to men um thank you for your service where's the one when people retweet my post without permission that is essentially human trafficking

Alexwelcome to do by friday where we read the last good tweets going very fucking hard on donald duck

Merlintoday saying i would never want to be him or be any part of his life oh my god and you know you got to actually read them, you know? I love, I remember. Guy trying to tell me I'm using the elliptical cross trainer backwards. Fuck you, man. This is my journey.

AlexSee, you know, you have made me sad because this used to be such a good website. Oh, God.

MerlinI know. I totally agree. I'll just do a couple more here because this is going to be a marathon. We're going long today. Drunk driving may kill a lot of people, but it also helps a lot of people get to work on time, so it's impossible to say if it's bad or not.

AlexI don't think I'm going to see that one.

MerlinExecuting some advanced high-risk transactions on the markets. Trading my ass medicine for dick medicine.

Is there anything else like that? We like Darth. We like drills. or anything else that just kind of makes you happy? My friend Chris Glass. Chris Glass is always such a, he's like a cool drink of water. He's such a sweet, like positive person. You should follow Chris Glass on Twitter. Like he'll make you happy. Don't you think? Do you follow Chris? I don't know. He designed my 73 folder site. That was Chris.

AlexWait, really? Oh, wow.

MerlinYeah, he also taught me everything I know about photography, which is not a reflection on him, if I'm being honest. Anna, my internet friend, Anna Demingham, I think that's how you pronounce her name. I don't know how exactly to pronounce it. A web designer person in England. She posts lots of good pictures of desserts and dogs. She's great. I'm just looking down the list here. There are other people who make me very happy. Oh, Jack Quaid makes me happy. Oh, you know, I had a second funny follow. This one I'm more comfortable admitting.

AlexAll right.

MerlinBecause you know I had that one funny follow. The funny follow we talked about.

AlexThe funny follow.

MerlinThe person that we talked about last week who started following me on Twitter.

AlexOh, yes, yes, yes, yes. Okay. But here's a good one.

MerlinHere's a good one. There's this person who had this very, very funny tweet. You know what? This just sounds like bragging, and I don't mean it that way.

AlexOh, I'll brag more than you. I got recognized at the Apple Store yesterday, and it was really weird.

MerlinShut your whore mouth. Tell me more about that. What happened? What was the situation? You were masked? Even masked, you were recognized?

AlexYeah, I mean.

MerlinWho is that mask today?

AlexWell, also, I want the Apple Store masks that they have. You know how last week I was like, what?

MerlinWhat are those? Tell me more about those.

AlexI don't. They are like a mix of an N95 or KN95 and a regular like surgical mask. There aren't like wrinkles, but I don't know. It fits around your face in a way that is truly.

MerlinIs it one of those ones that gives you room for your mouth to move like on its own?

Alexlike do you get yeah but it's i've never seen it anywhere else so i'm gonna try to find i'll try to find it but they should sell those if they had any sense yeah i kind of was like oh what what is this like when the um i i bet they make them they've got to make them the themselves like when they made the pizza boxes for the mac cafe or whatever like it looks like an apple i bet that's

Merlinit was very much a thing during the johnny years where it's like i've decided to care a lot about this thing. Oh, okay. Here we go. Here we go. So this was retweeted by a lot of people and now it's like a big viral tweet, but a person tweeted, and this is the tweet, okay? So don't look for context here. This is the tweet out of nowhere. And this is my kind of tweet. For everyone asking, the recipe is you cover whatever you're eating in olive oil and too much salt and then you roast it at 400 until it's kind of burned. I thought that was a very funny tweet. Let's see. Me, I'm not a

people pleaser also me doing full stand-up routine to make sure the waiter likes me and i followed that person because i thought oh my gosh i'm always looking i you know i'm always looking for like not the usual and like a funny lady's a good follow and then she followed me back i thought that's really fucking weird and guess what i guess who she is guess who she is a famous person no well no but famous in our way you ready for this you can't have one person hog all the fully loaded nachos. Did you have him come over to say that?

AlexI think you should leave. She's the nacho lady.

MerlinWait. Fully loaded nachos. No. Remember when Tim, they ordered the fully loaded nachos and his dates, eating all the ones with the, eating all the fully loaded ones

Alexwith all this left? She's on Twitter?

MerlinIt's like just like a little, like a little chunk of meat and some cheese is all that's left.

AlexI didn't know she was on Twitter.

MerlinAt first I didn't think I'd like Ella. It's very exciting. Yeah, she's on the username, but she's on the internet. I'll send it to you. Oh, my God. We can talk more about that. Did you see Anna and the dog? That's a good dog.

AlexYou just sent him?

MerlinYeah. It's a good dog that comes to work, and the dog wants to be loved, and this is the dog just staring at her through a door.

AlexI mean, when you're here, you're family.

MerlinWhen you're here, you're family. When you leave, fuck you.

AlexWho doesn't love being on location in the office?

MerlinI like Twitter that makes me happy.

AlexYeah.

MerlinOh, out of context, Gilmore Girls. That's fun. I like that a lot. That makes me happy.

AlexOh, out of context, Pokemon. Oh, so good. Oh, really? Honestly, most Pokemon.

MerlinI've got Star Trek. I've got Gilmore Girls. I've got Nathan. What are some of my other out of context? See, but I don't think I'd understand that, I feel like.

AlexNo, you would not. No, definitely not.

MerlinI'm not Pokemon enough to understand.

AlexWell, it's just like screenshots from the anime from the mid-90s that we all watched. It was very, it's just, you know, sometimes there is a Pokemon with boobs and you don't know why, but there it is. Why not?

MerlinYeah, or pregnant and eating itself or something or smashing somebody's stamps. Yeah, it's all pleasant. CJ from Guardian says we should check out Shelly Cloud. What is that? I'm looking at my Twitter here. I'm trying to bubble up positivity. Oh, oh, oh, Jamel Bowie. Very cute. Very cute little kid. Jamel Bowie, good photographer. Our friend CJ from Guardian app says we should be using Shelly. And you said something about it being expensive, I think.

AlexYeah, it's really expensive.

MerlinWhat is it? I couldn't figure it out looking at the website. Is it like as ubiquity is to Wi-Fi, Shelly is to home? CJ, hi, CJ. How's it going? CJ and I had a conversation last week. It was nice.

AlexHey, I like what you make. uh yep but no it's uh it's it's i don't i i was trying to like i was watching youtube videos and i'm like okay if this is really good then sure i'll figure out a way to try it out but it just almost feels like a more complicated hue situation like you got you really got to go all in yeah

MerlinYeah, yeah, yeah.

AlexOr you need to use, like, most people aren't going to install Home Assistant.

MerlinDid you get the update? You got the update that I was telling you about? Did you ever get it? The Hue?

AlexOh, the Hue update. Yes, I did. Yes. Isn't that cool? I was shocked.

MerlinIt looks and works way better, and it's got some nice little chunks of funk that are handy. I love the way it's trying to encourage you to make shortcuts. I think that's an interesting idea.

AlexMm-hmm. And it's encouraging Hugh Labs again. And I'm just like, oh, oh, someone must have been tipped off about what was coming up at the Dub Dub keynote.

MerlinI should spend more time with that. And do you want to talk about WWDC? Hey, everybody. Oh, you know, maybe we should do an intermission right here. Maybe we should do a thing where we play like in West Side Story or like Gone with the Wind. We're halfway through. People go and pee. Maybe we could put it. I'll make another.

Alexfind some um uh uh uh intermission music i didn't get your approval should we do that should we get

Merlinhave an intermission no we won't take an intermission but we'll put in some music so if anybody needs to go pee or get a sandwich they could do it now uh-huh yes or do you want them to be here for the journey do you want them to be here step by step with us no breaks

Alexall gas no breaks wait wait what is what is happening are we taking a break or no like

Merlinif you go see an old movie i think i want to say you know all the old movies that were often based on plays. You know, most plays are two acts. Correct me on that if you need to, Quinn. Jump in here. Yeah, you know, Quinn, if we've never said it, but just jump in any time. Alex said it's okay. But, like, you go and you see an Oklahoma, a movie, you see, think about West Side Story. Have you seen the movie West Side Story? Of course. Okay. It opens. Do you remember how it opens? Yeah. It opens with just, like, this mostly red background and this line art of a city kind of slowly drawing in.

And they're playing what we in the community call the overture. so like you know like you get the overture for carmen and like overture for carmen you play i mean can you have a spanish opera i'm not sure but the point is you play you play the overture and then that goes and then that remember remember that great like match cut not match cut but where we realized that after the building's drawn in like you're going i think it's the playground or the the basketball courts and the show starts and you're jet all the way from your first cigarette

It's Your Last Dying Day, right?

AlexMm-hmm. I'm going to pretend that I love this movie. Mm-hmm. Oh, you don't like it?

MerlinYou don't like Busted Story? Mm-mm.

AlexNo, I don't.

MerlinIs it too gay? Too gay for you?

AlexI don't know. I just don't. I don't know. I can't pin it down.

MerlinThat's fine. No, it's fine. And then approximately halfway through, I want to see. I don't think this is right. I want to say that Quintet, Quintet is probably Act 2. And then it comes up on screen. And usually like a curtain and some brush script, and it'll say intermission. And just like with a play. And that's where people can go. If you're watching that movie in a theater, you're seeing A Gone with the Wind, you're seeing A West Side Story, you're seeing an Oklahoma or whatever. It's real long. And then they have an intermission. And you go and you come back.

AlexWell, has that happened in since? Because, oh, wow. I'm thinking like I guess there would have been one if Hamilton was released in theaters. Or like what about Titanic? Was there a Titanic intermission? Like, I'm trying to think of the two tape ones.

MerlinI don't know. You know what? Let's fully utilize our tools. As Steve Bannon says, get your hands on your weapons.

AlexI need my tools.

MerlinI'm going to say. I like to bind and be bound.

AlexYeah. It's an implication.

MerlinOh, my God. You got to watch the bloopers. The bloopers. Oh, my God. Oh, you know, I thought I never finished last week, as long as we're staying on topic, is I love the bloopers. I love the bloopers. The bloopers as they try to get through that scene are unbelievable. The ones where they're talking to Mac's dad and promise to come back with their butts full of drugs. They can't get through that. And you see sort of what I perceive to be the real them. There's so many good ones. But what I wanted to say last week when I mentioned Uncle Jack, I feel like there are a couple people who are not primary cast members.

Primary cast members crack each other up. Because it's one thing to write this in a room. But then it's another thing to hear Charlie doing the line. I'm talking about It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. To hear Charlie doing it in the voice, actually talking about Birdlaw with a clip on Tiny Tie. And they just crack up. But I feel like there's two. It's always two people with Sonny.

Cricket and Uncle Jack just always level everybody. So the scene I was referring to last week, I don't remember which episode it was. And it's not a big hand episode. But it's the one where Uncle Jack comes in and he says to Brian Unger, I'm an attorney. And he goes, I'm Jack Kelly. And Brian Unger goes, nice to meet you. And then Jack shakes his hand again and goes, nice to meet you. And Brian goes, the pleasure's all mine. He goes, nice to meet you.

AlexAnd they keep repeating.

MerlinAnd it's very funny. And then everybody just completely breaks up. Or like in the courtroom scene where he gestures and his hand flies across the room. And he starts screaming and running around to go retrieve his hand. Next scene, he's got duct tape on his hands to hold it on. Do you remember that?

AlexOh, yeah.

MerlinIn the trial of the century. Trial of the century. I love it. And then Guillermo del Toro, he takes off his hat and he's got the bird under it. And then takes out Brian Unger's eye. The other one that makes everybody.

AlexI forget he's in that episode every time.

MerlinHe's Papio Boyle in that one. And obviously he's also in. He's also in the. What was it? What's it called? The McPoyle Ponderosa Wedding Massacre.

AlexOh, I just watched that one. Oh, so good.

MerlinI love the McPoyles. I love the McPoyles in the background. And it's like lemon grab. We realize there's lots of lemon grabs and they're all different because they've all been inbred in different ways. Remember, there's the guy who lost his eyes and his ears to the bird, and he's wearing headphones in the courtroom. The other one that cracks everybody up is his friend of the show, director, producer. What's his name? Cricket. Cricket just breaks everybody up. Like the episode where Cricket's Tale, the one that starts his lame ass.

And he's eating the lemons when he's eating the lemon slices because they pay him in lemons. He's eating lemons in the alley while talking to Belle. And he just makes, keep making this noise, like, oh.

Did you know, did you know the woman who, who gives Wang, Wang, the, gives him the hand job at a gang? You know, you know that that woman, that one woman, you know she was on Mr. Show, right?

AlexNo, I did not know that. Oh.

MerlinDo you remember when they get the hand job? She's smashing it.

AlexYeah. I'm aroused. Yeah, yeah.

MerlinAgain, more very funny bloopers. But I think her name is Mary, Mary Jane, Mary Jo. She was on Mr. Show. But you know what? She's also in the video for Weezer's The Good Life. She's a pizza delivery person in the video for The Good Life.

AlexOh, character actress Mary Jane.

MerlinMary Jane. Mary.

AlexOh, no, that is a CBD company. Never mind.

MerlinOh, oh, I want to tell you about something I like. Don't get that kind from a gas station. Get Mary Jane. Mary Jane. Oh, Mary Jane. I get it. It's a.

AlexYeah. Yep. Yep. Yep.

MerlinMr. Show. I think she's the one who says, I believe in Mary Lynn. Mary Lynn Rajscub. She's the one who says, I believe in dragons after Coupon the movie. I think that's her.

AlexWow. What a last name that I would have never.

MerlinThat's a tough last name. Let's find out what her background is. I'm going to guess that it's either going to be like Nordic or Polish.

AlexWhere are you from? No, where are you really from? No, where are you really from? I'm going to say Ukraine. Yeah.

MerlinOh. Do you have a Criterion channel?

AlexNo.

MerlinOkay. They've got, as referenced by some movie podcast nerds, they've got a great, God, Criterion is so well done. I'll just fucking just look at Criterion, watch trailers, add things to my list without ever watching fucking anything because the whole experience of the Criterion app is so fucking good. They make their own trailers.

AlexReally?

MerlinOh, yeah.

AlexNo, it's wild.

MerlinIt's wild. So they'll do a series, like in this case, The Czech New Wave, and they do a trailer, they do a teaser, and they'll do interviews. And it's like fucking Milos Forman talking about Czech New Wave. And this woman who's a film critic talking about, well, you know, to call it Czech, there's part Czech and part Slovak. And that would be like calling Yugoslavia just Serbian. But the movies are fucking wild. You've got to check out, go check out a movie called Daisies.

AlexDaisies? How have I not?

MerlinYou should get Criterion Channel. You need that for your work.

AlexI mean, at one point, yeah, I have a list of things of can I expense this? And I'm going to put that.

MerlinI won't notice. I never look at the books.

AlexOh, no, not that. For my big boy LLC. Yeah, yeah, yeah. The because I'm now. Did I tell you what? Never mind. Oh, she dated David Cross. Interesting.

MerlinOh, that's where that comes from.

AlexMaybe that's.

MerlinShe's delightful. Let me show you what this page looks like.

AlexShe's been in so many. That's what it, because I'm always like, she looks familiar. She appeared in Dude, Where's My Car? And that is-

MerlinOh, Dude, Where's My Car? I see. Okay. I don't know if I've ever seen that. And that's different. Is that different from the guys who go to White Castle? That's different from the White Castle guys, right?

AlexThat is, yes, yes. This is sort of like the impetus, I think, of what eventually would become the hangover and like good drunken buddy.

MerlinOh, sure. That kind of like, yeah. My example for that is always like Joni Mitchell where I'm like, I'm so glad Joni Mitchell made the Joni Mitchell albums. But on the other hand, what Joni Mitchell inspired in other people has nothing to do with Joni Mitchell. It's just like terrible folk singing. Yeah, so I was watching Daisies last night. So check it out. That's what the page looks like. What's in my list? Valerie and her Week of Wonders, Fireman's Bald Daisies. Yeah, I just like adding things to my list.

AlexOh, okay. Wait. Does this, are you talking about the app on Apple TV as well?

MerlinYeah. Yeah. It's a really good experience.

AlexIn, in turn. Okay.

MerlinUnlike HBO.

AlexI want to get it just for a good Apple TV experience. God, HBO Max is just a.

MerlinMy daughter made fun of me so goddamn hard because I want to get good at using all the things. I do use Siri. She does not use Siri just to spite me. and we were watching a friend of the show we were watching Westworld and there was a great scene and I wanted to pause and it suddenly just and this is well documented. Hi Joe Steele. Like it just started flying all over the screen. There was no way to get it. I just basically had to quit the app. It was basically malware.

AlexOh that has happened to me! That has happened to me!

MerlinBut just scrubbing obviously, that's where you first realize oh this is nuts. You can't even scrub in any of the ways. it's i get that well you know because not everybody has the standard whatever it's called the standard video player that you know apple i guess puts in their sdk or whatever they do their custom ones and it's understandable stuff like youtube uses their own and so they didn't have the the jog shuttle stuff yet but in this case it's so ironic that i think they released that within a day i feel like of the new apple tv coming out so it felt like the apple tv was acting up

Alexyeah and i i in unlike normie twitter um or rather angry healthy wholesome twitter they're like oh gosh i spent money on this apple tv and it's broken and like okay yeah sure all right well

Merlinyou know there's this there is this part of me this gets back to our pound sign to us thing of like, hey, you know, that thing's not cheap. Like, it's not, it costs more than it should for what you get out of it. You know what I mean? Like, say what you will about Hulu or Disney Plus or whatever. Actually, Disney Plus and Netflix have both felt pretty depleted for me lately. It really wants me to watch that Bad Batch Star Wars show. But it's inexcusable to me that something that fucked up didn't get caught in QA or QC.

AlexYeah.

MerlinDoes that seem nuts?

AlexNo.

MerlinWere they just busy? How do you not catch, oh, this is a showstopper, guys. Now, see, those two girls on Mythic Quest, they would have caught it.

AlexWell, but that's the thing. If you play a video game and it doesn't work, you stop using it.

MerlinYou go and eat Poppy's secret ice cream sandwiches after.

AlexI love that show.

MerlinI love that show so much.

AlexBut I've had to accept that I think the reason that these apps probably won't get better anytime soon is because no one or probably nobody is unsubscribing from Hulu or HBO Max Go, whatever it's called, because of the UI.

MerlinYou mean they're not unsubscribing because – okay, yeah.

AlexYeah. Whereas if a video game is broken, you're like, oh, fuck this, and you stop using it. So I don't even know what sort of QC stuff they use.

MerlinI feel like Netflix is doing more and more things to get you to at least click on something. Because it used to seem to me like, wow, Netflix really wants you to watch stuff. That's so weird. I mean, I guess there's a business reason in a variety of ways they want you to watch stuff. But I've noticed more and more stuff because there's been, at least in my Netflix, my whatever I get on Netflix, there's been a ton more what I'm just going to, I could be saying this incorrectly, of what I perceive to be anime. Like there's a lot of like, you know, Japanese stuff or like, you know, in some cases, Chinese stuff, Korean stuff.

But I've noticed, it feels like maybe it's just for me and my experience, knowing what I click, knowing what I watch for a second. They must learn stuff from that. But I've noticed more and more stuff where it says right on it, this is available in English and Chinese. That's a new thing. It's like, hey, it's okay.

AlexYou can watch this in English.

MerlinIt's all right. But there's also ones where it sort of minimizes the too easy realization that this is probably something with subtitles. But if you click through and start watching and you like it, I guess you're more likely to sort of stick with it.

AlexI'm actually really confused about how it would do something like that with what you watch. Or do you share all of your...

MerlinI'm just guessing. I mean, there seems to be some, like, I don't know, invisible hand guiding what shows up in different places.

AlexIt's like the worst algorithm. I don't know why. I don't know. I don't browse Netflix and think, yes, I would like to see this, but I guess people do.

MerlinI do. I mean, but one thing that's a little bit of a bummer, at least on Apple TV, is their what's new section is not nearly as good as the one on the web. If you want to go to their top 10, I think you can get there, but it's not easy.

AlexOh, that's right. Yeah, sometimes it's there. You got to do the thing where it's like an infinite scroll, but it's circle.

MerlinWe kind of scroll to the left and go to new. But like if you go to new, you're not going to see, at least I'm not seeing upcoming. Whereas if you go to the web version of that, you do see more like, oh, here's stuff I want to add to my pile.

AlexI didn't even know there was an option. Man, you use a lot of stuff in the browser and for good reason. God.

MerlinWell, you know what it is? I mean, because like this is a very, and let's talk about WWC soon. This is a very Merlin and GTD kind of thing, which is like, if I'm scrolling through Netflix or Criterion and I know I'm not going to start watching a Tarkovsky movie right now, like it's almost bedtime. I don't feel like watching a YouTube video. I will just scroll around. But I know that I'm scrolling around. It does not feel like a waste of time. It's making me happy. With that said, when do I discover things?

I discover things. It's day Merlin who discovers things and night Merlin who decides what to watch. And so I'll be somewhere out in the world and including in my various apparatuses that I use for things where I'll say, okay, here's some new stuff coming out. Like here's a movie that's coming soon. Here's a whatever. Or I'll just see people talk about something. And then I will jump straight into something like either Just Watch, Letterboxd, one of those. Because all of those lists feed into my apparatuses. Like anything I add to a list in Letterboxd.

AlexThat's cool. That's so cool.

MerlinSo you can have, if one had apparatuses for doing things, one might have lists like, here's my list of stuff I've added on Letterboxd. Here's my list of stuff on Tracked. Here is all of the IMDb upcoming releases. And one could actually create different filters and sorts so that you say, okay, show me everything that's not the word as exclusion. Everything I haven't excluded. Like I excluded Taxi Driver because I already have Taxi Driver. Like things that it thinks you're going to watch based on secret sauce and other lists. So like that for me is all web based mostly because then I can just say, you know, or if I said I learn about a new show the way what I learned about hacks, I was able to go in on the website and say, you know, yeah, add this to my pile.

Alexwhy doesn't this get i mean i know why but i really wish that this would be you know integrated into things that aren't falling off the back of a truck because letterboxd actually is the place where i go and i'm like i wonder like what's a new good movie yeah what's what's jamel buoy

Merlinwatching like what's david simms yeah yeah dan mccoy the people all the men that i follow on

Alexletterbox like what are they into right now yeah what what uh how many how mad am i going to get about a bad rating john syracusa gave to to one of my favorite john syracusa man he's his his his

Merlinthree stars really get my goat and he knows it he knows what he's doing he knows what he did um i think the nexus the the what you may be describing that maybe i mean have you used just

Alexwatch no or oh wait but wait you just is that the one that is like watch it anywhere well yeah just

Merlinwatch go in and get an account and i think there's some api where it can work with other things i wish i could add stuff directly from just watch and have it go into my soup but i'll go to just watch get an account and then what you do is you do a search on tv show or movie sorry i'm speaking to the audience here hello hi it's real pal merlin you go in and get a just watch account and you can log in with Google or whatever. And then you say, the Hudsucker proxy. And it does a search on the Hudsucker proxy. Oh, what I should mention, why get an account? Because you can identify the services that you stream stuff from,

like as part of a subscription, or places you're interested in buying something. So don't show me Tubi because I don't have Tubi. Don't show me Mubi because I even, despite the cineast cow, I don't have that. But I will buy something off Apple's formerly iTunes thing. I do have HBO Max, et cetera. So you're going to search for, what was my example?

AlexOh, a Hudsucker proxy.

MerlinGo search for Hudsucker proxy. It'll show you the places you can watch it for free on your streaming. And buy different qualities. If you want to buy this in 4K, click here to get that on Apple. if you want to rent this at SD. Click here to get it from Prime Video, et cetera. So it's just a really quick way to... So there's a thing everybody's talking about, like, you know, like the reason I watched The Thing the other night, the great John Carpenter movies, it popped up on Criterion. It's not actually streamable in that many places.

Anyway, it's really handy. Try justwatch.com. That's one to grow on. Just watch, Alex. Just calm down and watch.

AlexJust watch. Just watch. Don't do anything else.

Merlinwatch get your hand out of your jammies and just watch

Alexchallenge might be mine i forget it oh yes it was yours

Merlinmovies with intermissions

Alexthis week's challenge comes from merlin man and it was to eat at a pet store or the pet store this challenge come come about i don't even remember i'd have to go back and listen

Merlinbut you or i probably knowing me probably me said something that triggered something I don't know if we were talking about eating but I don't know it just made us both

Alexlaugh. Oh it's probably a super taster thing yeah yeah okay. It made us both laugh and then we

Merlinthought you know it'd be funny if you had to go eat at the pet store. Now okay so I got a hunch and can you tell me if my hunch is right? I'll save it for the show but my hunch is like my version of this is not super interesting and that yours might be more interesting. Is that a fair hunch?

AlexI don't know. Maybe. Maybe. I don't know. So I'll go first and then you do

Merlinyours because yours is gonna be bad. Yeah, go for it. Go for it. Or not. You tell me we'll cut this out. This is the third time we've lost audio. I apologize.

AlexGo, go first. I want to hear about your kind of sort of peanut butter. I was really ready to do this.

MerlinAn anecdote comes to mind, which is, and I might have even, this might have been where it came from because my brain has very limited, you know, access in the hallways. But we'd gone to the Cincinnati Zoo when I was a kid. Yeah, I think I told you this. We'd gone to the zoo and we're doing the tour. And there's the old cranky guy that always does a tour. And they go, hey, check these out. Everybody try this. Eat this food. And we're like, that's kind of weird and gross. And he's like, you know, it's what we feed the bears. It's essentially dog food. So the man made children eat dog food.

AlexYou did not tell me this. I love this.

MerlinOh, wait. I can tell you an exact way that I can make it sound like that. Oh, God. And it was some of the people were very upset by it. Mm, mm, mm. Is this dog?

AlexMm, mm, mm, mm. Yeah, that's what they feed the bears. Oh, I should open mine then. Mm.

Merlinoh okay so are you eating bear food right now bear naked food one day oh no um boy that's nasty i was ready to go in gung-ho alex and even i've been saying to my family i says do i say hey can we all do a trip because bando needs worms that's a plan bando needs horn worms so we need to get some worms and we need a couple other things and i was like it'd be fun if y'all came along and Emma was totally into doing it too. And so my wife insisted on taking us to the nice pet store down in Daly City.

AlexLike an all-natural type of place?

MerlinNo, nice as in like, wow, you learn a lot about America in this particular pet store.

AlexOh, all right.

MerlinBut they have all the things. I thought their collection of attire for pets was a little bit thin considering the audience. But like a third of this store, it's the size of a grocery store, right? Oh, God, I swallowed it.

AlexOh, no.

Merlinand so we got there and like a third of the store half of the store is food and and matt and i were both like oh my god i mean again who cares you just don't care but when we were kids uh we were kids at sort of the beginning of options for pet food as a thing because it used to be either get alpo in a can or you get like this in a bag but this we were we grew up the commercials we saw over and over included stuff like, you know, finicky, finicky cats like Morris choose the

kitty chow or whatever it's called. Oh, Purina. Right. Or you've got like Purina cat chow, chow, chow, chow. Where there was like, OK, there's a name you want to associate with this beyond Alpo. But my God, Alex, it's so crazy. They have a, not that this is bad, but it was not for a lack of options. There is so much food for animals at a pet store. and I guess I'm wrong unless deer can be pets I thought we'd find a salt lick I've been looking forward to a salt lick for a week

and I couldn't find anything salty I looked in the bird section doesn't that seem like something? like a teething stuff

AlexI tried so hard to find a salt lick doesn't that seem like a thing? yeah, and you could order it online but I guess I assumed that you would go to a pet store it seems like a thing

Merlinlike you get for a canary or something or a, I don't know, doesn't a salt lick seem like a thing for an animal?

AlexI mean, well, that's, yes, and I've seen, like, goat accessories and, like... Goat accessories! Title! Yeah, yeah. You know, like, at bigger grocery stores that cater to a wider array of animals.

MerlinYes, more diverse, thank you! God, I wish I could put that applause.

AlexYeah. We're very bold and brave today, but no salt licks, And a lot of, I don't know, I was disappointed, not by lack of options, because, oh boy.

MerlinI mean, you can get, like, and it's all like fairly, all this stuff at this place, for obvious reasons, was fairly, seemed pretty premium. It wasn't like you're just going to go to, what do you have there, Jewel Osco? Is that yours?

AlexYes.

MerlinWhat's your Jewel? What's your Jewel called? Jewel Osco?

AlexYeah, Jewel Osco is the Midwest one.

MerlinBecause, you know, different, different places. We had Jewel Tea in Florida. But we were going to go, and it's one of those stores, at least our Jewels was always like the like, ugh, fuck you. Like everything was just like in boxes where somebody had hastily cut, opened a box and like stuck it on a shelf. And it's like, everything's cheap here. That kind of dog food. No, this stuff is like beautifully put together. The people are nice. They have very sweet baby bearded dragons there. And a turtle that I really wanted to kiss. So here's mine real quick. I don't know what happened, Alex. I ended up kind of chickening out because I just – of course, because of the government, they have to say not for human consumption on there.

And that didn't scare me off over much because I figure this American man, anything you're going to put in the store, I can probably eat. We can talk about Dr. Don later. But I looked at lots of different things. I was very upset that I couldn't find a salt lick. And if I'm being honest, Emma really wanted a salt lick too.

AlexWho doesn't? Oh, gosh. It's just –

MerlinBut we went to an end cap, and the thing that seemed most palatable and admittedly a bit of a cop-out is this brand of dog biscuit called Milk Bone. And so in the Milk Bone family of products, they have these little cute ones, like these little cute ones in three different flavors. Now, and just for clarity here, I had a mask. I was saying to my daughter, you can either have me see, and I'll wear glasses, or you can have me have a mask on, and you'll be more calm. So I had no glasses. I'm trying to read the label and I can't really read the label

It says hey these are these tiny milk bones They're like they're really really little and cute I'll send you a photo And they have three flavors And I'm reading and it says it's got beef and chicken and bastard And she said no that's bacon That's bacon not bastard Bastard is not a flavor

AlexYeah no

MerlinSo we bought those and we ate them And that's what I just had right now So we have beef, chicken and bastard baby milk bones

AlexYou just ate a milk bone? A little one I actually ate a mini.

MerlinThey're really small. They're like a little treat.

AlexNo, I know. My dearly departed dog had loved those. Oh, they loved them so much. But you ate a milk. Oh, okay.

MerlinBut it taught me a lot also about America. And not in a bad way. But something I said to my family as we're driving away. I was like, first of all, man, that was really so much stuff. Which I guess is the point. But think about this. Think about companies and their responsiveness to the market. And let me just give you a couple.

AlexMatt and I were just talking about this.

MerlinReally? Okay, so let's look at whoever owns HBO this week versus, like, say, I don't know, Iams or, to this point, Milkbone. It's like you think about the brand loyalty of pet food in particular. because you know like what your dog or your cat likes if your cat's not a monster like ours who only likes anything for half a day finicky but like you think about that relationship where like i bet people have very strong brand associations almost along the lines of well you know my my my

mom used heinz ketchup so i use heinz ketchup also i'm not a monster nobody uses heinz but that that kind of thing are you coke or pepsi are you this or that and i bet the responsiveness of those companies it's it's when you think about it it's so obvious like okay so your your sweet doggo like milk bones right yeah and so this is actually an example i came up with as we're driving out of the parking lot your dog loves milk bones and but like and then maybe sometimes you give the dog two milk bones and you're unintentionally like conditioning it a little bit to where it thinks

it should always get multiple milk bones i could so see somebody being interviewed in like a little office, one of those fake offices in the mall with marketing people, I could see them going, you know what? I love milk bone. And they can reel it off. These are the real heads. No, right? I really know milk bone. I could really see a bunch of people independently saying, my beagle is getting older. And I used to give my beagle multiple milk bones, but the vet says not

to do that. And now my dachshund needs to lose weight. My beloved, my sister-in-law's dachshund max is not a fixed income, but he's on a specific diet. Very, very maintenance phase dog diet. But I could see somebody saying, you know, we love milk bones. I'll always buy milk bones. But you know what would be cool? It would be cool if you also made small ones. For like if you're doing training or if you have an aging dog and you'd like to give the dog multiple milk bones, but not multiple big. And I could see somebody else going, my dog's a big boy and I don't want to give him lots

of bones, so make big bone. And then like, oh yeah, we'll make big bone. Like it makes so much sense for them to service this audience that's incredibly loyal and presumably has some amount of – I don't know if it's disposable income, but it's income they need or want to spend because they love their pet. Like I think it makes – is this related? Because HBO, you know, you can go fuck a duck as far as HBO is concerned. But like Milk Bone and this – I could see them very much saying, well, of course we're going to make these in a smaller size, bastard flavored, and put them on an end cap because people want it.

Now, what were you and Macchi talking about? Brand loyalty.

AlexNot so much brand loyalty because a lot of these brands are owned by, like, the same three big companies, like how Yum owns Taco Bell and Pizza Hut and all that.

MerlinThere's got to be, like, one building called Unilever and, like, everything is in there.

AlexOr P&G, I think, is another one. Mm-hmm. And you might have come across this. Not only are there, you know, like the cute little teensy tiny milk bones, but they have like basically there's diet and wellness culture for pets now.

MerlinBecause because but it's so funny against a first world thing in some sense where it's like like Max the Dachshund has been able to like, you know, Max used to have a sister named Bailey. I'll send you a picture of Bailey. She's a sweetie, a big, big pitbull mix. and she would go over and try to get into Bailey's food. And Max now has run to the house since Bailey passed away, RIP. But you don't want your dog to get obese and die. Or in the case of our cat, we don't have to have a $20,000 heart surgery for a foster cat.

AlexOh, God.

MerlinBut you're right. The wellness thing, I think that's real, though. But it also is an extension of, like I said to Emma, we're walking up and down the aisles, and I'm going, I don't really want any of this. I was like, I don't mean this in a mean way, but I would not be surprised if you could get, The same way that Lauren Lapkus' character in the earliest show makes clothes for her cat and then for herself. I could see a thing where you're like, it would be called like something like din din for two. I could see a thing where it's like along the lines of almost like a TV dinner or like a yogurt with a dip in yogurt.

We could pop off part of it and go, this is this snack. This snack's for you. This one's for me.

AlexThey have stuff like that, like cat wine.

MerlinDoes that exist? Because that should exist.

AlexYeah, yeah. I'm pretty sure that it definitely exists with like snacks. So I wonder if there's like a, you know.

MerlinOh, where you could each get it. Like, is it the same jerky or is it segregated jerky?

AlexLet me see. I think it is the same.

MerlinUnless it's got chocolate and ibuprofen in it.

AlexYeah.

MerlinThat's not good for anybody. We should have had Matchy on for this, damn it. Because Matchy has to deal with feeding a lot of pets, I bet.

AlexOh, God. And now putting pills down a cat's throat. And, oh, big broken animal week for Mechies.

MerlinAs a hobby or as a vocation?

AlexNo, no. Vocation.

MerlinImagine having to do that to Maureen Ponderosa.

AlexOh, God. Well, she has a big mouth. It works.

MerlinCan we just add this to the docket maybe at the end of the day?

AlexI shouldn't have to pay Alan money to a cat.

MerlinHe takes out the laser point. I didn't know he was bringing a laser pointer.

AlexGod.

MerlinSo snacks, you can get a segregated jerky or similar. Meals with pets.

AlexOkay, meals with pets. But the other thing with the pet market in general is the brands realized that, you know, oh, it really isn't great to feed your dog basically sawdust. Yeah.

MerlinAnd like all the all those Alpo used to say, oh, it doesn't have fillers.

AlexYeah. Yeah.

MerlinWhich, you know, it's all like beaks and claws or whatever. Probably. Yeah.

AlexYeah. And that's still kind of how some like Iams or oh, no one yell at me. I don't know. See, I'm we're a blue buffalo family.

MerlinSo what a website called PETA to with an article called foods you can share with your dog. I'll put that in show notes.

AlexYeah. Well, we've sometimes made chicken and then the cats get some chicken. and it's just this chicken.

MerlinI told you my grandfather, my grandfather who never allowed my mom to have a pet, they eventually got lamb chopped, the very sweet toy poodle. And every night he would sit there at the kitchen table like cutting up chicken for the dog.

AlexSo cute. It was so cute.

MerlinHe was so broken inside.

AlexWell, that's how, I mean, if you're broken inside, take care of a broken pet.

MerlinBut as long as you know it, like lean into it. You know what I mean? Yas queen. I need to get that applause sound

Alexanyway I mentioned to our friend Dr. Don that I had eaten bird seed before because okay here's the thing it's just like millet I've had millet before and like a sesame and it's just seeds and he's like that's not a good idea and he had contacted us because

Merlinwhat about suet you ever eat suet

AlexI don't know what that is. Eat a suit?

MerlinIt's like animal fat you feed to a bird.

AlexOh, ew. No, no, no, no.

MerlinYou have standards. You're not a monster.

AlexNo, no. I just eat high quality. No filler,

Merlinno beaks and claws for you.

AlexOh, boy. But I guess a lot of times salmonella spreads through dog food when you eat. Oh, man. Yeah, because the only huge difference between dog or pet and human sort of manufacturing is at the FDA and that but there's a huge wide variety in terms of like pet health it's not so much like the brand that you buy but it's how it is prepared like what sort of factory like are they is there ratchet in the food yeah yeah

Merlinyeah and the standards must be really different for those kinds of things yeah so you could be

Alexeating like sure they might be eating the mcdonald's of dog food but at least you're not eating a wendy's with like ratchet in it so it's i mean yeah oh boy no i see what you're saying okay okay yeah and well and and then uh that's another thing for a company to brag about and you know then like in the mid nineties, the cost of pet food skyrocketed, skyrocketed and, but may realize, Oh, it costs twice as much to manufacture,

but we can charge like four times. Uh, yay. Capitalism.

MerlinIt's so interesting because there's, there's this one, I don't know. It might be farmer's dog, but there's some brand that advertises on MSNBC. This is just my apprehension of this. So, and I don't mean this as a hate crime, but, and they're leaning very heavily into the, like the pampered, the pantered, pampered dog with the pampered owner, often like a gay guy. Or like a gay black guy? But they seem like they're really leaning into this whole, like, hey, I get the best food from my body. Why wouldn't I get that from my dog? And, I mean, that makes sense if you have the means, right?

AlexYou wouldn't give this to your child. Why would you give this to your dog? And I'm not, like, dunking on this. Because we do the same thing.

MerlinAlex, moments snap together like magnets. How can any of us say why we're how we are?

AlexExactly. Pet your demon dogs. anyway i couldn't find any bird seed that didn't look too shady so i just have been eating some

Merlinquinoa i almost got bird seed because i thought that would be like i figured we could make like

Alexchecks checks mix with bird seed and be fun that's basically so yeah you just you eat it with a little spoon and the some sometimes you're hungry and sometimes you need money and someone's like hey I'll give you $100 to eat some bird seed. Oh, okay. And then you say, okay. And then.

MerlinOkay. I get it.

AlexI'll do a lot of things for money.

MerlinOh, oh.

AlexYou're like cricket? I can't finish it. Oh, God. Anyway, here's some raw millet I've been casually eating. I also got some.

MerlinOh, wow. Raw. Now, see, I bet that gives you the trots.

AlexI'm well I've also here we go

Merlinroasted or something yeah

Alexyeah I didn't realize how important it was to cook quinoa so that gave me quite a tummy ache last night because like you know Griffin McElroy just going up and eating the raw pasta which I no one tells you not to I mean I don't know

Merlinmy boyfriend calls them chips

AlexI'm glad that you enjoyed your

Merlinyour milk bone whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa is that it you didn't eat cat food no oh well okay hold on

Alexis that millet okay yeah crunch um unfortunately as i was reminded because i'm allergic to cats and a lot of like cat byproducts just show up in food and because it says not for human consumption sometimes it's hard to find the ingredients in food specifically the cat food that uh we have in our house and is there something you could reveal uh oh um blue we see

it's true we do have like a brand allegiance to blue buffalo but there's also sometimes they oh

Merlinyeah that's supposed to that that's i i tried to search for best tasting pet food and and the google site like was really out to get me because it kept going to like i think you mean best food for my dog or whatever i'm like no no there's gotta there's gotta be like some shitty like sub johnny knoxville blog spot out there that's like tasted a bunch of food like you know to make their frat bros laugh

Alexyeah well and and that's the thing is like i'm i'm here for a laugh i'm not here to die oh that's

MerlinGod, you're so... And I don't have an EpiPen. How am I going to make this play so everybody can hear it?

AlexI mean, I've thrown up many times for this show. Okay. But this, I felt like, wasn't... Like, this is, like, you know, if I'm going to eat... If I'm going to throw up for the show, I want it to at least taste good. You know? I want to...

MerlinThat's so wholesome, Alex. I totally agree. I totally agree.

AlexYeah.

MerlinSo, you know what? Good for you. You know what I'm saying?

AlexYeah. Millet's good, though. Millet. Oh. that's not as good as what i was hoping for i want one that just sounds like liberals i want

Merlinliberals applauding

Alexwhat's that sound okay

Merlinwhat very liberal applause it's a little aggressive for my taste oh wait is there a difference between

Alexlike a democrat and republican applause um i feel like i should have a joke for this i i really thought that was the one that was going to take us out but i was wrong yes and

Merlinuh you know one of them is phobic about jews
